High-pressure stability relations, crystal structures, and physical properties of perovskite and post-perovskite of NaNiF3

Van Vleck analysis of angularly distorted octahedra using VanVleckCalculator

Van Vleck modes describe all possible displacements of octahedrally coordinated ligands about a core atom. They are a useful analytical tool for analysing the distortion of octahedra, particularly for first-order Jahn-Teller distortions, but determination of the Van Vleck modes of an octahedron is complicated by the presence of angular distortion of the octahedron. This problem is most commonly resolved by calculating the bond distortion modes (Q 2, Q 3) along the bond axes of the octahedron, disregarding the angular distortion and losing information on the octahedral shear modes (Q 4, Q 5 and Q 6) in the process. In this paper, the validity of assuming bond lengths to be orthogonal in order to calculate the Van Vleck modes is discussed, and a method is described for calculating Van Vleck modes without disregarding the angular distortion. A Python package for doing this, VanVleckCalculator, is introduced and some examples of its use are given. Finally, it is shown that octahedral shear and angular distortion are often, but not always, correlated, and a parameter η is proposed as the shear fraction. It is demonstrated that η can be used to predict whether the values will be correlated when varying a tuning parameter such as temperature or pressure.

Long-Term Stable, High-Capacity Anode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries: Taking a Closer Look at CrPS4 from an Electrochemical and Mechanistic Point of View

Electrochemical performance of the layered compound CrPS₄ for the usage as anode material in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) was examined and exceptional reversible long-term capacity and capacity retention were found. After 300 cycles, an extraordinary reversible capacity of 687 mAh g^-1 at a current rate of 1 A g^-1 was achieved, while rate capability tests showed an excellent capacity retention of 100%. Detailed evaluation of the data evidence a change of the electrochemical reaction upon cycling leading to the striking long-term performance. Further investigations targeted the reaction mechanism of the first cycle by applying complementary techniques, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and ²³Na/³¹P magic-angle-spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The results indicated an unexpectedly complex reaction pathway including formation of several intercalation compounds, depending on the amount of Na inserted at the early discharge states and subsequent conversion to Na₂S and strongly disordered metallic Cr at the completely discharged state. While XAS measurements suggest no further presence of intermediates after formation of Na intercalation compounds, several different phases are detected via MAS NMR upon continued discharging. Especially the data obtained from the MAS NMR investigations therefore point toward a very complex reaction pathway. Furthermore, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, resulting in the presence of NaF, was observed. After recharging the anode material, no structural long-range order occurred, but short-range order indeed resembled the local environment of the starting material, to a certain extent.

The structure and vibrational spectroscopy of cryolite, Na3AlF6

Cryolite, Na₃[AlF₆], is essential to commercial aluminium production because alumina is readily soluble in molten cryolite. While the liquid state has been extensively investigated, the spectroscopy of the solid state has been largely ignored. In this paper, we show that the structure at 5 K is the same as that at room temperature. We use a combination of infrared and Raman spectroscopies together with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy. The use of INS enables access to all of the modes of Na₃[AlF₆], including those that are forbidden to the optical spectroscopies. Our spectral assignments are supported by density functional theory calculations of the complete unit cell.

Anisotropic diffusion creep in postperovskite provides a new model for deformation at the core-mantle boundary

The lowermost portion of Earth's mantle (D″) above the core-mantle boundary shows anomalous seismic features, such as strong seismic anisotropy, related to the properties of the main mineral MgSiO3 postperovskite. But, after over a decade of investigations, the seismic observations still cannot be explained simply by flow models which assume dislocation creep in postperovskite. We have investigated the chemical diffusivity of perovskite and postperovskite phases by experiment and ab initio simulation, and derive equations for the observed anisotropic diffusion creep. There is excellent agreement between experiments and simulations for both phases in all of the chemical systems studied. Single-crystal diffusivity in postperovskite displays at least 3 orders of magnitude of anisotropy by experiment and simulation (Da = 1,000 Db; Db ≈ Dc) in zinc fluoride, and an even more extreme anisotropy is predicted (Da = 10,000 Dc; Dc = 10,000 Db) in the natural MgSiO3 system. Anisotropic chemical diffusivity results in anisotropic diffusion creep, texture generation, and a strain-weakening rheology. The results for MgSiO3 postperovskite strongly imply that regions within the D″ region of Earth dominated by postperovskite will 1) be substantially weaker than regions dominated by perovskite and 2) develop a strain-induced crystallographic-preferred orientation with strain-weakening rheology. This leads to strain localization and the possibility to bring regions with significantly varying textures into close proximity by strain on narrow shear zones. Anisotropic diffusion creep therefore provides an attractive alternative explanation for the complexity in observed seismic anisotropy and the rapid lateral changes in seismic velocities in D″.

Hydrostatic pressure induced structural phase transition and mechanical properties of fluoroperovskite

We perform the first-principles calculations combined with the particle swarm optimization algorithm to investigate the high-pressure phase diagrams of Na[Formula: see text]F₃ ([Formula: see text]  =  Mn, Ni, Zn). Two reconstructive phase transitions are predicted from Pv-[Formula: see text] to pPv-[Formula: see text] at about 9 GPa and pPv-[Formula: see text] to ppPv-[Formula: see text] at around 26 GPa for NaZnF₃. That is not the case for NaMnF₃-a direct transition (reconstructive transition in nature but with the same Pnma space group) from Pv-[Formula: see text] to ppPv-[Formula: see text] phase around 12 GPa. Strikingly, our simulated results manifest that a disproportionation phase of NaZnF₃ post-perovskite is uncovered along the way, which provides a successful explanation for the observed results in experiment. Additionally, the mechanical and thermal properties, especially the dynamical property, of the four NaZnF₃ phases have also been studied. Here, we reveal the obvious softening of [Formula: see text]-wave velocity and bulk sound speed in pPv-[Formula: see text]-to-ppPv-[Formula: see text] transition, which may result in the discontinuity of seismic waves propagation through the Earth's interior.

Development of a robust tool to extract Mulliken and Löwdin charges from plane waves and its application to solid-state materials

Chemically understanding the electronic structure of a given material provides valuable information about its chemical as well as physical nature and, hence, is the key to designing materials with desired properties. For example, to rationalize the structures of solid-state materials in terms of the valence-electron distribution, highly schematic, essentially non-quantum-mechanical electron-partitioning models such as the Zintl–Klemm concept have been introduced by assuming idealized ionic charges. To go beyond the limits of the aforementioned concept, a Mulliken and Löwdin population analytical tool has been developed to accurately calculate the charges in solid-state materials solely from first-principles plane-wave-based computations. This population analysis tool, which has been implemented into the LOBSTER code, has been applied to diverse solid-state materials including polar intermetallics to prove its capability, including quick access to Madelung energies. In addition, a former weakness of the population analysis (namely, the basis-set dependency) no longer exists for the present approach which therefore represents a comparatively fast and accurate wave-function-based alternative for plane-wave calculations for which density-based charge approaches (e.g., Bader like) have been very popular.

A robust tool to extract Mulliken and Löwdin charges for (extended) solids from plane waves has been developed and applied.

The phase diagrams of KCaF3 and NaMgF3 by ab initio simulations

ABF3 compounds have been found to make valuable low-pressure analogues for high-pressure silicate phases that are present in the Earth's deep interior and that may also occur in the interiors of exoplanets. The phase diagrams of two of these materials, KCaF3 and NaMgF3, have been investigated in detail by static ab initio computer simulations based on density functional theory. Six ABF3 polymorphs were considered, as follows: the orthorhombic perovskite structure (GdFeO3-type; space group Pbnm); the orthorhombic CaIrO3 structure (Cmcm; commonly referred to as the "post-perovskite" structure); the orthorhombic Sb2S3 and La2S3 structures (both Pmcn); the hexagonal structure previously suggested in computer simulations of NaMgF3 (P63/mmc); the monoclinic structure found to be intermediate between the perovskite and CaIrO3 structures in CaRhO3 (P21/m). Volumetric and axial equations of state of all phases considered are presented. For KCaF3, as expected, the perovskite phase is shown to be the most thermodynamically stable at atmospheric pressure. With increasing pressure, the relative stability of the KCaF3 phases then follows the sequence: perovskite → La2S3 structure → Sb2S3 structure → P63/mmc structure; the CaIrO3 structure is never the most stable form. Above about 2.6 GPa, however, none of the KCaF3 polymorphs are stable with respect to dissociation into KF and CaF2. The possibility that high-pressure KCaF3 polymorphs might exist metastably at 300 K, or might be stabilised by chemical substitution so as to occur within the standard operating range of a multi-anvil press, is briefly discussed. For NaMgF3, the transitions to the high-pressure phases occur at pressures outside the normal range of a multi-anvil press. Two different sequences of transitions had previously been suggested from computer simulations. With increasing pressure, we find that the relative stability of the NaMgF3 phases follows the sequence: perovskite → CaIrO3 structure → Sb2S3 structure → P63/mmc structure. However, only the perovskite and CaIrO3 structures are stable with respect to dissociation into NaF and MgF2.

Exploration of new superconductors and functional materials, and fabrication of superconducting tapes and wires of iron pnictides

This review shows the highlights of a 4-year-long research project supported by the Japanese Government to explore new superconducting materials and relevant functional materials. The project found several tens of new superconductors by examining ∼1000 materials, each of which was chosen by Japanese experts with a background in solid state chemistry. This review summarizes the major achievements of the project in newly found superconducting materials, and the fabrication wires and tapes of iron-based superconductors; it incorporates a list of ∼700 unsuccessful materials examined for superconductivity in the project. In addition, described are new functional materials and functionalities discovered during the project.

Time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction with milligram samples: the crystal structures of NaCoF3and NaNiF3post-perovskites

Using the recently upgraded Polaris diffractometer at the ISIS Spallation Neutron Source (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), the crystal structures of the post-perovskite polymorphs of NaCoF3and NaNiF3have been determined by time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction from samples, of mass 56 and 16 mg, respectively, recovered after synthesis at ∼20 GPa in a multi-anvil press. The structure of post-perovskite NaNiF3has also been determined by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction for comparison. All measurements were made at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Despite the extremely small sample size in the neutron diffraction study, there is very good agreement between the positional parameters for NaNiF3obtained from the refinements of the X-ray and neutron data. Relative to the commonly used oxide post-perovskite analogue phases having calcium as theAcation, the axial ratios and derived structural parameters of these fluoride post-perovskites are more consistent with those of Mg0.91Fe0.09SiO3at high pressure and temperature. The structures of NaCoF3and NaNiF3are very similar, but the unit-cell and CoF6octahedral volumes of NaCoF3are larger than the corresponding quantities in NaNiF3, which supports the hypothesis that the Co2+ion has a high-spin state in this compound. The anisotropic atomic displacement parameters of the Na ions in NaNiF3post-perovskite are of similar magnitude to those of the F ions. The probability ellipsoid of the F1 ion is a prolate spheroid with its largest component parallel to thebaxis of the unit cell, corresponding to rotational motion of the NiF6octahedra about theaaxis of the crystal. Although they must be synthesized at pressures above about 18 GPa, theseABF3compounds are strongly metastable at atmospheric pressure and room temperature and so are highly suitable for use as analogues for (Mg,Fe)SiO3post-perovskite in the deep Earth, with significant advantages over oxides such as CaIrO3or CaPtO3.
