Abstract
Sleep quality in adult inpatients is frequently and severely disturbed by various factors such as noise, pain, and unfamiliar surroundings, which can impair disease recovery. Acupressure is widely used to improve sleep quality in hospitalized patients, but its overall effectiveness is unclear. This meta-analysis aims to analyze the efficacy of acupressure therapy on sleep quality and sleep parameters in adult inpatients. Eight electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials published before April 2024. Two researchers independently screened, assessed, and extracted data from the included studies. A total of 41 studies involving 3680 subjects were included. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference between the acupressure and control groups in sleep quality (SMD = -1.58, 95% CI [-1.85, -1.31]), total sleep time (SMD = 1.12, 95% CI [0.40, 1.83]), sleep efficiency (SMD = 0.90, 95% CI [0.29, 1.52]), sleep onset latency (SMD = -0.73, 95% CI [-1.14, -0.33]), and wake after sleep onset (SMD = -1.32, 95% CI [-2.55, -0.09]). The meta-regression results suggested that the number of sessions daily and the duration of each session were significant factors influencing heterogeneity. Acupressure is an effective intervention to improve sleep quality and sleep parameters in inpatients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical training therapy (MTT) is an advanced, individualized rehabilitation approach that integrates multiple methods to improve physical function. It is widely applied to rehabilitate sports injuries. This randomized study evaluated MTT's effects on physical injury rehabilitation, mental function, and athletic performance in elite rock climbers. METHODS Thirty elite climbers (mean age 19.5 ± 2.9 years) from the Chinese National Climbing Team were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (MTT, n = 15) or a control group (CON, n = 15) for 16 weeks (May 6 to August 25, 2024). Both groups had access to the same rehabilitation facilities and physiotherapy. The CON group followed routine training, while the MTT group received additional exercises. The primary outcome was the incidence of climbing-related injuries across 19 body regions. Secondary outcomes included specialized abilities, Functional Movement Screen (FMS) scores, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). RESULTS The total number of injuries (375, 4.74) and the duration of discomfort (weeks) in the MTT group were lower than those in the CON group (492, 7.26). The MTT group demonstrated significant improvements in outcomes at six sites including the shoulder, forearm, hand, wrist, upper back, and hip (10 % and 21.25 %, 6.67 % and 19.17 %, 27.08 % and 56.67 %, 10.42 % and 3.75 %, 17.08 % and 27.08 %, and 2.08 % and 4.58 % for the MTT and CON groups, respectively, p < 0.05). In tests of sports-specific performance and psychological functioning in rock climbing, time and between-group interaction effects were observed (p < 0.01) for the Finger Strip Endurance Test, Hanging L-Lift Leg Test, FMS, and SAS. After the intervention, the MTT group exhibited a relative increase in injuries to the neck, upper back, and knees (6.25 % and 1.25 %, 6.67 % and 13.33 %, and 13.75 % and 7.08 % for the MTT and CON groups, respectively, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION MTT is an ideal method for the rehabilitation of injuries in elite rock climbers and for facilitating their early return to sport. It addresses the majority of athletes' physical injuries and reduces the concentration of injuries in high-risk areas. Additionally, it specifically improves athletes' performance in specialized tests to alleviate the symptom of anxiety.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of increasing duration of family members' presence on sleep status in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) admitted to the cardiac care unit. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. METHODS Ninety patients with ACS randomly assigned into two groups. No intervention was performed in control group. In the intervention group, the time of family members presence was changed from 1 h per day to 2 h per day from the second to the fourth day. Then, ST Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionnaire was completed by the patients every day during the study. RESULTS The patients in the intervention group had statistically significantly better sleep status during the course of intervention compared to the control group. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION The increasing duration of family members' presence can improve the sleep quality and quantity of ACS patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Improving sleep quality in the intensive care unit is significant for the recovery process. This study investigated the effect of listening to audiobooks on sleep quality and vital signs in intensive care patients. METHODS This quasi-experimental study utilized the pre-posttest design, involving control and intervention groups. The study was conducted in the internal medicine intensive care unit of a hospital in Turkey between January-June 2022. Standard nursing care was given to both groups on the first night, and the Sleep Evaluation Form and Richard Campbell Sleep Scale were used to measure sleep quality in the morning. On the second day, the intervention group listened to a recorded story, and the control group had standard care. Sleep quality and vital signs were measured again. RESULTS Data from 56 participants were analyzed. Noise (96.4%), light (69.6%), unfamiliar environment (64.8%), concerns about illness (33.9%), and care and treatments (58.9%) are the main causes of sleep disruption. The effect of these factors decreased in the intervention group after the Audiobook Listening Practice, which significantly improved the sleep quality of the ICU patients (p < 0.001). Among the vital signs, a significant difference was found in pulse and blood pressure (p < 0.001), while no changes were observed in temperature and respiratory rate in time group interaction (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The Audiobook Listening Practice improved sleep quality and life parameters in the ICU. Nurses can use the practice to improve sleep quality in intensive care units. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE Evidence-based studies are needed to improve the sleep quality of patients in intensive care units, to ensure clinical improvement, and to reduce the length of stay at hospital. The practice is effective in manipulating environmental stressors. This low-cost method significantly improves patient care activities. It is recommended to integrate such complementary activities into intensive care units, to train nurses about the practice, and to support the practice with new studies.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep outcomes among patients with coronary artery disease and recognize pertinent characteristics that potentially affect the effectiveness of such interventions. METHODS AND RESULTS Relevant studies conducted before 27 April 2022 were identified through four core electronic databases using terms related to coronary artery disease, sleep outcomes, and randomized controlled trials. Two authors independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment. Meta-analysis, sub-group analysis, publication bias analysis, and sensitivity analysis were conducted using R version 4.2.2. Of the 4755 retrieved articles, 42 studies were selected for systematic review and 30 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The findings of this study revealed that non-pharmacological interventions significantly improved self-reported sleep quality (standardized mean difference = -0.85, 95% confidence interval -1.08, -0.63), but had no effects on objectively measured sleep efficiency and duration. Regarding the types of interventions involved, environmental control was the most effective in improving self-reported sleep quality, followed by relaxation, self-care behaviour management, and relaxation and cognitive/psychological complex interventions. Through subgroup analysis, we did not find any covariates that were significantly related to self-reported sleep quality. CONCLUSION Non-pharmacological interventions have been shown to play beneficial roles in improving self-reported sleep quality among patients with coronary artery disease. Additional studies are required to elucidate the effect of non-pharmacological interventions on objectively measured sleep outcomes and to characterize their optimal frequencies and durations. Abstract
Insomnia is repeated difficulty in falling asleep, maintaining sleep, or experiencing lowquality sleep, resulting in some form of daytime disturbance. Sleeping disorders cause daytime fatigue, mental confusion, and over-sensitivity due to insufficient recovery from a sound sleep. There are some drugs, such as benzodiazepines and anti-histaminic agents, which help to sleep induction and insomnia cure. However, the prolonged administration is unsuitable because of tolerance and dependence. Therefore, the researchers attempt to find new medicines with lesser adverse effects. Natural products have always been good sources for developing new therapeutics for managing diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, insomnia, and liver and renal problems. Ample research has justified the acceptable reason and relevance of the use of these herbs in the treatment of insomnia. It is worth noting that in this study, we looked into various Persian herbs in a clinical trial and in vivo to treat insomnia, such as Artemisia annua, Salvia reuterana, Viola tricolor, Passiflora incarnata, lettuce, and Capparis spinose. According to research, herb extracts and fractions, particularly n-butanol fractions with non-polar agents, impact the benzodiazepine receptors and have hypnotic properties. Also, alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in practically every plant are mentioned making them the popular natural compounds to help with sleep disorders and promote calmness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is common in hospital. The hospital environment can have a negative impact on sleep quality, through factors such as noise, light, temperature, and nursing care disruptions. Poor sleep can lead to delays in recovery, wound healing, and increase risk of post-operative infection. METHODS We conducted a systematic review evaluating the effectiveness of non-pharmacological sleep interventions for improving inpatient sleep. The primary outcome was sleep quality, the secondary outcome was length of hospital stay, the harm outcome was adverse events. MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to 17th February 2022. Meta-analysis was conducted using a fixed effects model, with narrative synthesis for studies with no useable data. Risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane tool. RESULTS 76 studies identified with 5375 people randomised comparing 85 interventions. Interventions focused on physical sleep aids (n = 26), relaxation (n = 25), manual therapy (n = 12), music (n = 9), psychological therapy (n = 5), light therapy (n = 3), sleep protocols (n = 2), milk and honey (n = 1), exercise (n = 1), and nursing care (n = 1). In meta-analysis, medium to large improvements in sleep quality were noted for sleep aids, relaxation, music, and manual therapies. Results were generally consistent in studies at lower risk of bias. Length of hospital stay and adverse events were reported for some studies, with benefit in some trials but this was not consistent across all interventions. CONCLUSIONS Physical sleep aids, relaxation, manual therapy and music interventions have a strong evidence base for improving inpatient sleep quality. Research is needed to evaluate how to optimise interventions into routine care.

Abstract
Background: Since the 1990's aromatherapy has been a popular adjunct to nursing and midwifery care in a variety of health care settings. Objective: The scoping review seeks to identify and confirm the benefits of incorporating aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice Design: A scoping review using PRISMA-ScR of experimental studies where care is provided to the patient by a registered nurse or midwife. Settings and participants: Any health care setting where nurses or midwives provide care. Review Methods: A multi- engine search using a range of MeSH and non-MeSH terms with the Boolean search [AND]. Inclusion criteria were; publication date from 2005-2021, study involved aromatherapy as an intervention, conducted in a clinical nursing or midwifery environment and the published article is available in full in English. Excluded were; single patient cases, animal studies, in vitro studies, use of essential oils internally or a whole plant extract was used or use was non-nursing/midwifery related. Results: 124 studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 19188), classified into seven themes. Conclusion: The evidence supports the use of aromatherapy within a range of nursing and midwifery practices enhancing a holistic model of care. Impact: This scoping review contributes evidence to support the inclusion of aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice.

Abstract
AIMS Poor sleep is a frequent occurrence in the critical illness. Evaluate sleep quality and test the effect of a multi-intervention sleep care protocol in improving sleep quality in a coronary care unit (CCU). METHODS AND RESULTS Quasi-experimental study, carried out in two phases. During the first phase, the control group (n = 58 patients) received usual care. Baseline sleep data were collected through the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) and the Sleep in the Intensive Care Unit Questionnaire (SICUQ). During the second phase (n = 55 patients), a sleep care protocol was implemented. Interventions included actions to promote analgesia, reduce noise, brightness, and other general measures. Sleep data were collected again to assess the impact of these interventions. The intervention group had better scores in overall sleep depth [median (interquartile range)] [81 (65-96.7) vs. 69.7 (50-90); P = 0.046]; sleep fragmentation [90 (65-100) vs. 69 (42.2-92.7); P = 0.011]; return to sleep [90 (69.7-100) vs. 71.2 (40.7-96.5); P = 0.007]; sleep quality [85 (65-100) vs. 71.1 (49-98.1); P = 0.026]; and mean RCSQ score [83 (66-94) vs. 66.5 (45.7-87.2); P = 0.002] than the baseline group. The main barriers to sleep were pain [1 (1.0-5.5)], light [1 (1.0-5.0)], and noise [1 (1.0-5.0)]. The most rated sources of sleep-disturbing noise were heart monitor alarm [3 (1.0-5.25)], intravenous pump alarm [1.5 (1.0-5.00)]. and mechanical ventilator alarm [1 (1.0-5.0)]. All were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the baseline group. CONCLUSION A multi-intervention protocol was feasible and effective in improving different sleep quality parameters and reducing some barriers to sleep in CCU patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is essential for the physical and psychological restoration of inpatients, and lack of sleep results in sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality, with potentially harmful consequences. AIM To summarise sleep-promoting interventions in the Intensive care unit (ICU) and acute ward setting. METHOD AND RESULTS Six databases were searched to obtain studies for review and eight studies were selected, appraised, analysed and produced two themes: sleep-disturbing factors and sleep-promoting strategies. Sleep-disturbing factors included environmental factors (such as light and noise), illness-related factors (such as pain, anxiety and discomfort), clinical care and diagnostics. Sleep-promoting strategies included using pharmacological aids (medication) and non-pharmacological aids (reducing noise and disturbances, eye masks, earplugs and educational and behavioural changes). CONCLUSION The literature review showed that both ICU and acute ward settings affect patients' sleep and both use similar strategies to improve this. Nevertheless, noise and sleep disturbances remain the most critical sleep-inhibiting factors in both settings. The review recommended future research should focus on behavioural changes among health professionals to reduce noise and improve patients' sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considering the importance of sleep in the treatment success and quality of life in patients with cancer, it is necessary to seek effective solutions to improve their sleep quality. In this regard, a comprehensive review of the effect of melatonin on sleep can be very useful to provide an evidence-based clinical guide. Therefore, the aim of the present systematic review was to investigate effect of melatonin on sleep quality and insomnia in patients with cancer. METHODS The present systematic review was conducted in 2021. To find evidence related to the study objective, Iranian databases (SID, Magiran) and international databases (Google scholar, Web of Science, ProQuest, Medline via PubMed, Scopus) were searched using specified keywords (Melatonin, Sleep, insomnia, Cancer, Neoplasms, Carcinomas, Tumor, Carcinomatosis, Carcinomatoses, Sarcomas) from the beginning of the establishment of the mentioned databases until 31st December of 2020. After primary and secondary screening, and selection of studies according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, information obtained from studies were extracted in a checklist with items such as author (year), study design, sample size, age, melatonin dose, duration of intervention, results, and conclusion. RESULTS From 295 articles found, finally six relevant studies entered the review process. The intervention used in the studies included oral melatonin administration. The minimum and maximum dose of melatonin was 3 mg and 20 mg, respectively, which was taken by patients for 10 days and to four months, usually every night before bedtime in studies. The results of the review showed that melatonin had a significant effect on sleep quality and insomnia in four studies. However, two studies showed no significant improvement on sleep quality after the intervention and melatonin administration, although melatonin had significant effect on increasing sleep efficiency in the short term. CONCLUSIONS The present review study showed that melatonin may be effective in improving sleep quality and insomnia in patients with cancer. It is suggested to carry out further extensive and detailed studies to achieve the most effective and safest method of melatonin administration in terms of dose and duration of use in order to improve sleep quality among patients with cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of interventions that could be performed by nurses to improve the sleep quality of hospitalized patients in acute and semi-acute units. DESIGN A systematic review of randomized controlled trials and narrative synthesis. DATA SOURCES Seven electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Scopus, ISI WoS, CENTRAL, PsycInfo, and Embase) were accessed on 20 May 2019 with a temporal limit of 10 years prior. REVIEW METHODS Original research studies of interventions that could be delivered by nurses to improve sleep quality during hospitalization in acute and semi-acute units were included. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were performed by two independent reviewers. RESULTS Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The interventions carried out in the trials were classified into four categories of measurement: environmental, physical, behavioural, and combined. Fourteen studies obtained statistically significant improvements; two showed a blend of significant and non-significant improvements; and one reported non-significant results. However, only four trials of the seventeen were judged as having a low risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS Overall evidence about interventions that could be performed by nurses to improve perceived sleep quality in hospitalized patients was found to be positive, and no negative effects were reported. However, higher quality research using both subjective and objective measures is needed, in order to strengthen the evidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of valerian root extract on the sleep quality of patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. METHODS The patients who participated in this triple-blind clinical trial were selected by permuted block randomization. The participants were assigned to the valerian (n=36) and placebo (n=36) groups. The valerian group received 530 mg of valerian capsules for 30 nights after CABG surgery, and the placebo group received 530 mg of the placebo capsules containing wheat flour. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the prothrombin time (PT) and partial thromboplastin time (PTT) were assessed on four occasions, including the baseline, the 3rd, 14th and 30th days following intervention. RESULTS The odds ratio of worsened sleep quality significantly varied over time (the interaction of time and group) in the valerian group compared to the placebo group in various dimensions including total sleep quality (P=0.001), sleep latency (P<0.01), sleep duration (P=0.020), sleep efficiency (P=0.001) and daytime dysfunction (P=0.025). No significant difference was observed in the alterations of the odds ratio of PT in the two groups over time. (P=0.371). CONCLUSION The consumption of oral valerian root extract over 30 nights could significantly improve the patients' sleep quality safely after CABG surgery.

Abstract
Elderly patients undergoing surgery often suffer from sleep disorder. Holistic therapies might help them sleep better. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of guided imagery along with breathing relaxation on sleep quality in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 90 elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery in 2 educational hospitals in 2018, Mashhad, Iran. The elderly patients with different abdominal surgical procedures were distributed to the wardrooms and then the rooms were randomly assigned into 2 groups. In the intervention group, the patients learned breathing relaxation the day before surgery and then an audiotape was provided to perform the guided imagery from the day before surgery for 5 days (twice) along with breathing relaxation. St Mary's Hospital Sleep Inventory was completed the night before, 48 hours and 96 hours after the surgery. Data analysis was done using SPSS 21 through analytical tests. Results of the test indicated that the score of sleep quality was significantly higher in the intervention group the night before surgery (P = .001). The total scores of sleep quality in the intervention group 48 and 96 hours after the surgery were significantly higher (P < .001). Based on results of generalized estimating equation model, the score of sleep quality for patients was 8.76 units higher in the intervention group than in the control group by controlling for the effects of time. Guided imagery along with breathing relaxation improved the sleep quality of the elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery.Trial registration: IRCT20180731040652N1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burn-specific pain anxiety and sleep disorders are common factors in burned patients that affect wound healing process, as well as the severity of burn pain. This study aimed to investigate the effect of foot reflexology massage on burn-specific pain anxiety and sleep condition of patients hospitalized in the burn ICU. METHOD In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 52 patients were assigned by permuted block randomization 1:1 to the intervention (n=26) and control (n=26) groups. The intervention group received 20min of foot reflexology massage during 3 days on their third, fourth and fifth days of hospitalization and 15min before changing wound dressings. Patients in the control group merely received routine care. The Burn-Specific Pain Anxiety Scale (BSPAS) was completed for three consecutive days before and after changing wound dressings, and St. Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionnaire (SMHSQ) was filled out for four consecutive days before changing wound dressings for patients in both groups. The data were analyzed by IBM SPSS 16 software, Chicago, independent t, Chi-square, Friedman, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. FINDINGS We found no significant difference between pain-anxiety in the two groups before the intervention. The trend of different days in each groups were compared with Friedman test and showed that pain anxiety (p<0.001), sleep latency (p<0.001), duration of the last day's sleep (p<0.001) and satisfaction of the last night sleep (p<0.001) had a significant difference. In addition, Mann-Whitney test results showed that there were significant differences between the two groups at different times in terms of the above variables (p<0.05). The effect size was=0.82 for pain anxiety between group after the intervention. CONCLUSION Based on the results, foot reflexology massage can effectively reduce pain anxiety levels and improve sleep quality and quantity of patients with burn injuries; therefore, this non- pharmacological therapeutic method is recommended to be used in the burn ICUs. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pharmacological interventions for sleep (analgesic, sedative and hypnotic agents) can both disrupt and induce sleep and have many negative side effects within the intensive care population. The use of complementary and alternative medicine therapies to assist with sleep has been studied but given the variety of modalities and methodological limitations no reliable conclusions have been drawn. OBJECTIVE To synthesise research findings regarding the effectiveness of using complementary and alternative medicine interventions within the domains of mind and body practices (relaxation techniques, acupuncture) and natural biologically based products (herbs, vitamins, minerals, probiotics) on sleep quality and quantity in adult intensive care patients. REVIEW METHOD USED Systematic review. DATA SOURCES Five databases were searched in August 2018 and updated in February 2019 and 2020. REVIEW METHODS Searches were limited to peer reviewed randomised controlled trials, published in English involving adult populations in intensive care units. Interventions were related to the complementary and alternative medicine domains of mind and body practices and natural products. Included studies were assessed using Cochrane's risk of bias tool. RESULTS Seventeen studies were included. The interventions used varied: 4 investigated melatonin; 4 music +/- another therapy; 3 acupressure; 2 aromatherapy and 1 each for relaxation and imagery, reflexology, bright light exposure and inspiratory muscle training. Measurement of sleep quantity and quality was also varied: 5 studies used objective measures such as Polysomnography and Bispectral index with the remaining using subjective patient or clinician assessment (for example, Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, observation). Given the different interventions, outcomes and measures used in the studies a meta-analysis was not possible. Generally, the results support the use of complementary and alternative medicine for assisting with sleep with 11 out of 17 trials reporting significant results for the interventions examined. CONCLUSIONS Complementary and alternative medicine interventions, in particular, melatonin and music, have shown promise for improving sleep in adults with critical conditions; however, further research that addresses the limitations of small sample sizes and improved techniques for measuring sleep is needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Poor sleep quality is prevalent in candidates for percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs). The present study was conducted to compare aromatherapy with acupressure in terms of their effectiveness in sleep quality in patients undergoing PCIs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study was conducted on 85 patients undergoing PCIs and randomly assigned, using block randomization, to five groups, namely (1)aromatherapy, (2)placebo aromatherapy, (3)acupressure, (4)placebo acupressure (acupressure applied to a point not traditionally associated with improving sleep) and (5)control. The intervention groups received aromatherapy or acupressure or placebo from 10pm to 8am the following day. The control group received only routine care. Sleep quality was measured in the patients using a visual analog scale (VAS) that was completed by them before and after the intervention. RESULTS The mean pretest score of sleep quality was 2.91 ± 0.53 in the aromatherapy group, 2.84 ± 0.47 in the placebo aromatherapy group, 2.98 ± 0.59 in the acupressure group, 2.75 ± 0.41 in the placebo acupressure group and 2.88 ± 0.41 in the controls. ANOVA suggested no significant differences among these groups in the pretest (P = 0.746). The mean posttest score of sleep quality was 3.72 ± 1.84 in the aromatherapy group, 3.70 ± 1.83 in the placebo aromatherapy group, 7.35 ± 0.99 in the acupressure group, 2.67 ± 0.41in the placebo acupressure group and 2.72 ± 0.34 in the controls, suggesting significant differences among the five groups based on the ANOVA results showed significant differences among the five groups (P < 0.001). The mean posttest score of sleep quality was higher than the pretest score by 4.37 in the acupressure group compared to in the other groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The present findings provided scientific evidence for the benefits of using different methods, including acupressure, for sleep quality in patients undergoing PCIs. Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to determine the effect of warm footbath before bedtime on the quality of sleep on patients with acute Coronary Syndrome in Cardiac Care Unit. Methods: This study was conducted on 120 patients admitted to CCU at Mazandaran Heart Center and randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control. In the intervention group, warm footbath was performed after the second night in hospital before bed time by 41 C water for 20 minutes for three consecutive nights; in contrast, the control group did not receive anything of this sort. The next day, St Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionnaire was completed to evaluate sleep quality. Then, the obtained data were analyzed using SPSS software and Friedman, Wilcoxon exact statistical tests. Results: The quality of sleep in the first night of hospitalization was different from the third night after the intervention in both groups and the improvement process of sleep quality was observed in both groups. Most patients had moderate impairments (23-36), which had not changed during the intervention. In intervention groups, 8 patients had severe sleep disorders (greater than 37), which declined to 1 after three nights of intervention. While, in the control group this number fell from 10 patients with severe sleep disorders to 5. Warm footbath had a great positive impact on patients suffering from severe sleep disorders (P<0.05). Conclusion: Although warm footbath did not improve the quality of sleep in all patients, it reduced the number of patients who had severe sleep disturbances.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effect of acupressure on anxiety and sleep quality after cardiac surgery. DESIGN A randomized pre-post test control group design. METHODS Patients after cardiac surgery were divided into two groups: the intervention group (n = 50), who received acupressure on four different acupoints plus standard care, and the control group (n = 50), who received only standard care. Patients were admitted to the surgical clinic from the intensive care unit after 3 or 4 days of surgery. The levels of anxiety and sleep quality were evaluated during three postoperative days starting from their first day in the surgical clinic. FINDINGS Among the patients in the intervention group, the usage of acupressure decreased the level of anxiety and increased the sleep quality significantly compared with the control group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that acupressure decreased the level of anxiety and improved the sleep quality in the surgical clinic after cardiac surgery.

Abstract
AIM To develop a theoretical framework to inform the design of interpersonal touch interventions intended to reduce stress in adult intensive care unit patients. DESIGN Realist review with an intervention design-oriented approach. METHODS We searched CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Web of Science and grey literature sources without date restrictions. Subject experts suggested additional articles. Evidence synthesis drew on diverse sources of literature and was conducted iteratively with theory testing. We consulted stakeholders to focus the review. We performed systematic searches to corroborate our developing theoretical framework. RESULTS We present a theoretical framework based around six intervention construction principles. Theory testing provided some evidence in favour of treatment repetition, dynamic over static touch and lightening sedation. A lack of empirical evidence was identified for construction principles relating to intensity and positive/negative evaluation of emotional experience, moderate pressure touch for sedated patients and intervention delivery by relatives versus healthcare practitioners.
