Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Information on the use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in dogs with relapsing congestive heart failure (CHF) due to myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide data on HCTZ's short- and long-term effects in canine MMVD. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS Signalment, clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and outcome data of dogs with relapsing CHF due to MMVD treated with HCTZ were retrospectively reviewed. The initial time point was the day HCTZ was introduced for a CHF relapse. Optimized criteria were used to determine the appropriate timings for evaluating HCTZ's short-term effects on laboratory and echocardiographic variables and its long-term impact on CHF management. RESULTS Thirty-eight dogs were included. The initial median dose of HCTZ was 0.8 mg/kg/die. At a median of seven days after HCTZ prescription, creatinine, urea, and total calcium levels significantly increased, while sodium and potassium levels significantly decreased (P: from 0.045 to <0.0001). While no dog developed severe electrolyte abnormalities, some dogs showed severe increases in creatinine and urea. After a median of 95 days, no significant echocardiographic changes developed (P: from 0.74 to 0.13). Episodes of CHF were more frequent before (median: one every 68 days) than after (median: one every 124 days) HCTZ prescription (P=0.006). STUDY LIMITATIONS The study limitations included the retrospective design of the study; not all dogs were included both in the short- and long-term analysis. CONCLUSIONS In canine MMVD, HCTZ is useful in long-term management of relapsing CHF. However, in the short term, HCTZ can cause laboratory abnormalities, primarily increased creatinine and urea.

Abstract
Echocardiographic values can vary between dog breeds, making breed-specific reference intervals (RIs) preferable. Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2-D STE) is an advanced imaging technique that enables the measurement of myocardial deformation parameters, contributing to the assessment of systolic function. The objective was to determine breed-specific RIs for 2-D, M-mode, and Doppler-derived echocardiographic parameters for Dutch Sheepdogs, and to obtain 2-D STE-derived strain and strain rate values in this breed. Apparently healthy, purebred Dutch Sheepdogs (1-7 years) were recruited. Each dog underwent a physical examination and transthoracic echocardiography. Conventional 2-D, M-mode, and Doppler measurements were obtained; strain analysis was performed with 2-D STE software. RIs were established for conventional echocardiographic parameters; clinically relevant parameters were compared with commonly used RIs. The effects of gender, age, body weight (BW) and heart rate were tested. Sixty dogs were included. Panting and/or tachycardia were observed in 24 dogs, which affected the quality of the analysis to varying degrees (e.g., out-of-sector movement, lung artefacts). The selected parameters for left ventricular (LV) and atrial dimension showed good agreement with published RIs. BW was an independent variable influencing LV dimensions. This study provides RIs for conventional echocardiographic measurements and reports 2-D STE-derived strain and strain rate values obtained in Dutch Sheepdogs. The selected parameters of LV and left atrial dimension showed good agreement with commonly used RIs. Anxious behavior could represent a breed peculiarity to take into account when performing echocardiography, as it can affect image quality.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate whether there is a positive correlation between vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) and echocardiographic variables-left atrium-to-aorta ratio (LA/Ao), left ventricular fractional shortening (FS), left ventricular internal diameter in diastole normalized to body weight (LVIDdn), and left ventricular early filling velocity (E-wave)-and the Mitral INsufficiency Echocardiographic (MINE) echocardiographic score. Study Design: Prospective randomized blinded study. Animals: A total of 26 dogs. Methods: Dogs diagnosed with MVD participated in the study. All patients underwent radiographic and echocardiographic evaluation. Results: A high correlation strength could be observed between the left atrial enlargement predictor VLAS and the LA/Ao ratio (88%), as well as with LVIDdn (75%) and E-wave (74%). Furthermore, a correction strength of 84% was verified between VLAS and the MINE score. The analysis of the FS variable did not demonstrate a statistically significant relationship (p value of 0.06). Conclusions and Clinics Relevance: VLAS has a positive relationship and important correlation with the echocardiographic variables and MINE score. Associated with its higher accessibility in clinical routine is a potential diagnostic method to detect left atrial enlargement in dogs, contributing to the diagnostic conduct in DVM.

Abstract
Locally produced fish hydrolysate and oil from the agrifood sector comprises a sustainable solution both to the problem of fish waste disposal and to the petfood sector with potential benefits for the animal's health. This study evaluated the effects of the dietary replacement of mainly imported shrimp hydrolysate (5%) and salmon oil (3%; control diet) with locally produced fish hydrolysate (5%) and oil (3.2%) obtained from fish waste (experimental diet) on systemic inflammation markers, adipokines levels, cardiac function and fecal microbiota of adult dogs. Samples and measurements were taken from a feeding trial conducted according to a crossover design with two diets (control and experimental diets), six adult Beagle dogs per diet and two periods of 6 weeks each. The experimental diet, with higher docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids contents, decreased plasmatic triglycerides and the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme, also tending to decrease total cholesterol. No effects of diet were observed on serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and IL-12/IL-23 p40, and of the serum levels of the anti-inflammatory adipokine adiponectin. Blood pressure, heart rate and echocardiographic measurements were similar between diets with the only exception of left atrial to aorta diameter ratio that was higher in dogs fed the experimental diet, but without clinical relevance. Diet did not significantly affect fecal immunoglobulin A concentration. Regarding fecal microbiome, Megasphaera was the most abundant genus, followed by Bifidobacterium, Fusobacterium, and Prevotella, being the relative abundances of Fusobacterium and Ileibacterium genera positively affected by the experimental diet. Overall, results from the performed short term trial suggest that shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil can be replaced by protein hydrolysate and oil from fish by-products without affecting systemic inflammatory markers, cardiac structure and function, but potentially benefiting bacterial genera associated with healthy microbiome. Considering the high DHA and EPA contents and the antioxidant properties of fish oil and hydrolysate, it would be worthwhile in the future to assess their long-term effects on inflammatory markers and their role in spontaneous canine cardiac diseases and to perform metabolomic and metagenomics analysis to elucidate the relevance of microbiota changes in the gut.

Abstract
Impaired mitochondria cause an impressive decrease in ATP production becoming a common condition of cardiovascular diseases. Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction. By a non-invasive procedure of metabolism analysis on peripheral blood mononuclear cells, we exploit ex-vivo studies that directly constitute a translational approach to evaluate the cell bioenergetics. Cell ATP production decreased in the presence of MMVD, whereas glycolysis was unaffected. In MMVD, the mitochondrial activity underwent a significant reduction of basal respiration, maximal respiration, and ATP production. Our results depicted a pathological condition of MMVD characterized by cell metabolism deprived of mitochondrial energy support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correct assessment of left atrial size and function is essential to evaluate the severity of degenerative mitral valve disease in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Evaluate left atrial (LA) dimension and function in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) at different ACVIM stages and the accuracy of linear and volumetric indexes to assess LA enlargement. ANIMALS One hundred and ninety-eight privately owned CKCS. METHODS Multicentric prospective observational cross-sectional study. Dogs underwent an echocardiographic exam for breed screening or cardiac examination. Linear and volumetric echocardiographic LA size and function indexes were compared between classes. RESULTS Dogs were allocated as follows: 43 in class ACVIM A, 58 ACVIM B1, 55 ACVIM B2, and 42 ACVIM C/D. Only LA anteroposterior diameter normalized on body weight (LADn) and LA maximal, minimal and P volumes (LAVmax, LAVmin, LAVP) differed across all pairwise comparisons. Active LA emptying fraction (aLAEF) was higher in class B1 compared to class A (P < .001), and then decreased in class C/D compared to class B2 (P < .001). This suggests an increase in the left atrial active component due to the Frank-Starling mechanism in ACVIM B1 dogs, and the presence of atrial dysfunction in symptomatic dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE The LADn and LAV are higher in CKCS in class ACVIM B1 compared to class ACVIM A, suggesting the presence of LA remodelling at the early stages of the disease. Atrial dysfunction is evident in symptomatic dogs.

Abstract
Mitral regurgitation (MR) resulting from myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is a prevalent condition in dogs, particularly smaller breeds like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs) and Chihuahuas (CHHs). An accurate assessment of MR severity is essential for effective treatment and disease monitoring, yet a standardized method has yet to be established. In this retrospective study, we evaluated 124 client-owned dogs diagnosed with MMVD, including 64 CKCSs and 60 CHHs. Dogs were categorized into three stages: asymptomatic (B1), remodeled (B2), and congestive heart failure (CHF, C). The MR severity was quantified using the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) method, specifically focusing on the PISA radius (PISA-r). The PISA-r measurements exhibited significant increases across disease stages and demonstrated strong correlations with echocardiographic parameters (ranging from 0.83 to 0.94), including the left atrial size and left ventricular internal diameter. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed the high sensitivity and specificity of PISA-r in classifying disease stages, establishing optimal cut-off values. The method displayed excellent repeatability (interobserver variability: 0.95) and reproducibility (intraobserver variability: 0.97). In conclusion, the PISA method, specifically PISA-r, was reliable for assessing MR severity in dogs with MMVD. By simplifying the diagnosis and management of MR, this research can potentially improve the life and management of MMVD-affected dogs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This retrospective observational study explored the impact of preanaesthetic electrocardiogram (ECG) assessment on preoperative echocardiography requests and modifications to a standardised anaesthetic protocol in healthy dogs. METHODS A total of 228 healthy dogs with no previously diagnosed heart disease that underwent general anaesthesia at Complutense Veterinary Teaching Hospital from December 2017 to June 2018 were included. Preanaesthetic ECGs were assessed for abnormalities, and the findings were documented. The number of dogs requiring echocardiography, based on ECG findings, and the echocardiography results were recorded. All anaesthesia-related decisions were documented. RESULTS Overall, 72 dogs (31.6%) exhibited ECG abnormalities. Echocardiography was requested for five dogs (2.2%). The anaesthetic protocol was changed in 11 dogs (15.3% of those with ECG abnormalities). P wave disturbances, ventricular premature complexes and impulse conduction issues were abnormalities that prompted echocardiography. Bradycardia and electrical impulse conduction abnormalities influenced protocol modifications. LIMITATIONS The limited sample size meant that it was not possible to investigate potential correlations between demographics and ECG alterations. CONCLUSIONS Preanaesthetic ECG screening was useful for promoting echocardiography and influencing anaesthesia plans in a subset of dogs. Despite this, further assessment of the impact of routine use of non-targeted preoperative ECG on anaesthesia-related outcomes is warranted.

Abstract
Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a lectin associated with fibrosis and inflammation, and increased circulating concentrations are considered a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) in humans. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the serum concentration of Gal-3 in dogs with cardiac disease, both with and without AF. Dogs with AF associated with acquired heart diseases were selected, while cardiac healthy dogs and dogs with heart diseases but without AF served as controls. We statistically compared the serum concentration of Gal-3, which was assessed using a commercial canine-specific ELISA kit, among healthy dogs and dogs with heart disease with and without AF. Additionally, associations between Gal-3 and clinical and echocardiographic variables were evaluated. A total of 73 dogs were included, of which 17/73 (23.3%) were cardiac healthy and 56/73 (76.7%) had heart disease, with 26/56 (46.4%) having AF. No significant difference in Gal-3 concentration was found between cardiac healthy dogs (3.90 ± 1.65 ng/mL) and dogs with heart disease, either with or without AF (3.37 ± 1.04 ng/mL, p = 0.436 and 4.68 ± 1.80 ng/mL, p = 0.332, respectively). Gal-3 showed a significant positive correlation with age (r = 0.47, p < 0.001) and a negative correlation with body weight (r = -0.45, p < 0.001). The results of this study suggest that Gal-3 does not have an important role in the development of AF in dogs, but it is associated with advanced age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic effects of intravenous medetomidine and vatinoxan in dogs with stage B1 mitral valve disease. We hypothesised medetomidine-vatinoxan would reduce the need for manual restraint during echocardiography without producing detrimental cardiovascular effects or echocardiographic changes. ANIMALS Twelve client-owned dogs with stage B1 mitral valve disease. METHODS A transthoracic echocardiographic examination was performed before and after sedation with intravenous medetomidine (10 μg/kg) and vatinoxan (200 μg/kg). Vital parameters were also recorded, and the level of sedation was assessed subjectively. The data were analysed with Student's t-tests with an alpha level of <0.05. RESULTS End-systolic volume and left ventricular systolic diameter increased (from 0.89 ± 0.19 mL/kg to 1.13 ± 0.29 mL/kg and 0.96 ± 0.12 cm to 1.10 ± 0.10 cm, respectively) and ejection fraction (from 66.33 ± 4.0% to 56.23 ± 9.54%) and fractional shortening (from 36.13 ± 5.42% to 27.24 ± 5.6%) decreased significantly after sedation. End diastolic volume, left ventricular diastolic diameter, and left atrial size remained statistically unchanged, while aortic (from 1.34 ± 0.2 m/s to 0.99 ± 0.14 m/s) and pulmonic (from 0.94 ± 0.16 m/s to 0.66 ± 0.15 m/s) velocities decreased significantly. No dogs had a mean arterial pressure below 65 mmHg. Sedation enabled echocardiographic examination without manual restraint. No adverse effects were observed with the dose studied. CONCLUSIONS Echocardiographic parameters were not completely comparable with the baseline values, which should be taken into consideration when evaluating dogs sedated with intravenous medetomidine-vatinoxan.

Abstract
Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a biomarker of tubular damage, and its elevation has been described in human and canine cardiorenal syndrome. The aim was to evaluate the association between echocardiographic indexes and urine NGAL (uNGAL) and uNGAL normalized to urine creatinine (uNGALC) in dogs with MMVD. This is a multicentric prospective cross-sectional study. A total of 77 dogs with MMVD at different ACVIM stages were included. All dogs underwent echocardiography, serum chemistry, and urinalysis. Echocardiographic data analyzed were shortening fraction (SF), left ventricular diastolic (LVIDDn) and systolic (LVIDSn) diameters normalized for body weight, left atrium to aortic root ratio (LA/Ao), maximal (LAVMax) and minimal (LAVMin) left atrial volumes, LA stroke volume (LASV), early diastolic mitral peak velocity (EVmax), EVmax to tissue Doppler E' wave (E/E'), aortic (VTIAo) and mitralic (VTIMit) velocity time integrals and their ratio (VTIMit/VTIAo), and tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRVmax). In the univariate analysis LASV, TRVmax, LAVMax, LVIDDn, and VTIMit/VTIAo were independent predictors of increased uNGAL and uNGALC; however, only LASV [(OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.16 to 3.31) P = 0.01 for NGAL, and (OR: 2.79, 95% CI: 1.50 to 5.17) P < 0.001 for NGALC] and TRVmax [(OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.20-2.51) P = 0.002 for NGAL, and (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 10.07-2.10) P = 0.015 for NGALC] remained statistically significant in the multivariable analysis. Based on our results, LASV and TRVmax are associated with increased uNGAL and uNGALC. These parameters might detect dogs with MMVD at higher risk of developing kidney damage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the most common canine heart disease with a high predisposition in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs). Mitral regurgitation related to DMVD can lead to left atrial (LA) dilation, which is associated with survival time. Left-atrial-to-aortic (LA:Ao) ratio assessed by two-dimensional echocardiography is commonly used to evaluate LA size. The objectives of this prospective observational study were therefore 1) to compare different echocardiographic methods (i.e., monoplane and biplane Simpson's methods of discs (SMOD) and area-length methods (ALM)) in evaluating LA volume (LAvol) in CKCSs, 2) to assess LA volumes according to DMVD severity and, 3) compare the ability of LAvol and LA:Ao ratio to identify LA enlargement in CKCSs with subclinical DMVD (i.e., American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage B). MATERIALS AND METHODS 155 CKCSs, either healthy or affected by DMVD, were recruited. Variability and concordance between volumetric methods were evaluated. Values were analyzed according to 2019 ACVIM stages. RESULTS All Lin's concordance correlation coefficients regarding intra- and inter-observer variability were considered as very good to excellent. Monoplane methods and ALM produced higher values of LAvol than biplane methods and SMOD, respectively. The upper limit of normal end-systolic LAvol/body weight (LASvol/BW) was defined as 0.90 mL/kg. Left atrial volumes significantly increased with ACVIM stages. Additionally, 37% of stage B1 CKCSs demonstrated LA enlargement using LASvol/BW assessment, with significantly lower LASvol/BW values in dogs with regurgitation fraction ≤30% than in others (p<0.01). CONCLUSION In CKCSs, LAvol methods are not interchangeable. In ACVIM stage B CKCSs, LAvol quantification is more effective to detect LA enlargement than LA linear measurements.

Abstract
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in small-breed dogs, often leading to heart failure. Oxidative stress in MMVD can harm mitochondria, decreasing their DNA content. This study assesses dogs' oxidative stress and mitochondrial DNA at different MMVD stages. Fifty-five small-breed dogs were categorized into four groups, including: A-healthy (n = 15); B-subclinical (n = 15); C-heart failure (n = 15); and D-end-stage MMVD (n = 10). Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and mitochondrial DNA in peripheral blood were analyzed. Quantitative real-time PCR measured mitochondrial DNA, and PCR data were analyzed via the fold-change Ct method. Serum MDA levels were assessed using competitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Mitochondrial DNA was significantly lower in group B (-0.89 ± 2.82) than in group A (1.50 ± 2.01), but significantly higher in groups C (2.02 ± 1.44) and D (2.77 ± 1.76) than B. MDA levels were notably elevated in groups B (19.07 ± 11.87 µg/mL), C (23.41 ± 12.87 μg/mL), and D (19.72 ± 16.81 μg/mL) in comparison to group A (9.37 ± 4.67 μg/mL). Nevertheless, this observed difference did not reach statistical significance. It is noteworthy that mitochondrial DNA content experiences a decline during the subclinical stage but undergoes an increase in cases of heart failure. Concurrently, oxidative stress exhibits an upward trend in dogs with MMVD. These findings collectively suggest a potential association between mitochondrial DNA, oxidative stress, and the progression of MMVD in small-breed dogs.

Abstract
Standard transthoracic echocardiography is considered the non-invasive gold standard for the diagnosis of most cardiac diseases. Defining reproducibility, repeatability, and reliability of this exam is imperative to reduce errors in clinical evaluations. The present study aimed at: (1) evaluating the reproducibility and repeatability of 15 echocardiographic parameters in dogs by analyzing measurements obtained from several operators with different levels of experience and comparing them to the ones obtained from two board-certified operators (gold standards - GSs); (2) assessing whether different formative paths have an influence on the variability of the echocardiographic measurements. Fifty-one operators have been included in this study, along with two diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Cardiology. Ten dogs were enrolled, 5 Golden Retrievers and 5 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Echocardiographic examination was performed on each dog by one GS and several operators on the same day. Results show the highest deviation from the GS and a poor inter-operator reproducibility for the M-mode measurements of the interventricular septum and the left ventricular free wall. Differently, M-mode-obtained internal diameters of the left ventricle in systole and diastole, and measurements of the aortic annulus and root show moderate to excellent intra- and inter-operator reliability and a good concordance with the GSs, demonstrating that all the operators correctly assess left ventricular systolic function and dilation, and evaluate the aortic valve. Furthermore, a specialist clinical activity, more than the acquired theoretical knowledge, affects the reliability of the echocardiographic examination by reducing the difference from the GS' measurements.

Abstract
This review includes 36 studies of transthoracic real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) in animals. Most of these studies concern cardiac chamber quantification of the left atrium and left ventricle, in dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and different two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) methods have been reported in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dilated cardiomyopathy, and in healthy control dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and standard reference methods have been reported in healthy control dogs. In dogs with MMVD, volumetric RT3DE measurements of left atrium do not appear to provide superior prognostic value compared with 2DE methods using Simpson's method of discs in dogs with MMVD. The major advantages of RT3DE compared to 2DE include improvements in visualization of the complex morphology of the mitral valve, the estimation of mitral valve regurgitation, and improved visualization of complex congenital cardiac abnormalities.

Abstract
Introduction Cardiovascular and renal diseases are known to affect each other in the cardiovascular renal axis disorder (CvRD). Although CvRD, which includes myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), has been described in dogs, there are only a few reports on the progression of CKD in accordance with the severity of MMVD. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of MMVD is associated with the rate of progression of CKD in dogs. The time from the initial diagnosis to the worsening of the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage and the time for the occurrence of hyperphosphatemia and isosthenuria were evaluated. Materials and methods In this retrospective study, CKD progression was determined as an increase in the IRIS stage by at least one level and the development of hyperphosphatemia or isosthenuria. The CKD progression was compared in dogs with and without comorbid MMVD. Results Dogs with CKD were divided into two groups: dogs with and without MMVD (n = 63, concurrent group; n = 52, CKD group, respectively). The concurrent group was further divided into two subgroups based on the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines (B1 group, n = 24; B2 group, n = 39). The time for progression of CKD from IRIS stage 1 to IRIS stage 2 was significantly shorter in the concurrent group than in the CKD group (log-rank test, p < 0.001). MMVD was associated with an increased risk of progression from stage 1 to stage 2 (hazard ratio, 6.442; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.354 to 18.850; p < 0.001). The timing of the onset of hyperphosphatemia or isosthenuria in the concurrent group and the CKD group was not significantly different. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that MMVD could be a risk factor for the progression of CKD. Our findings may help predict the prognosis of dogs with both CKD and MMVD compared to CKD only.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION English springer spaniels have larger, rounder ventricles than most other breeds. How this geometry impacts responses to volume overload remains unknown. We compared left ventricular size between English springer spaniels and two similarly sized sporting breeds (Border collies and Labrador retrievers) in naturally occurring chronic left ventricular volume loading conditions (mitral regurgitation and patent ductus arteriosus [PDA]) to examine whether differences in remodelling responses exist between these breeds. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched records for cases of mitral regurgitation and PDA in three breeds. We recorded age, sex, presence of congestive heart failure (CHF), body weight and specific echocardiographic variables. We compared normalised measures of left ventricular size between breeds. Cases with CHF were further examined as a separate group. RESULTS One-hundred-and-ninety-one dogs were included: 110 with degenerative mitral valve disease, 42 with mitral dysplasia and 39 with PDA. One third of all cases had CHF. All measures of left ventricular size were larger in English springer spaniels in mitral regurgitation cases (P<0.001), whereas PDA cases did not differ. English springer spaniels with PDA resulting in CHF had larger systolic dimensions and volumes than similarly affected non-English Springer Spaniel dogs (P=0.003). CONCLUSIONS English springer spaniels have greater left ventricular dimensions when exposed to chronic mitral regurgitation, compared with Border collies and Labrador retrievers, but not when exposed to volume overload from a PDA. English springer spaniels differ in their left ventricular morphology from two other sporting breeds, supporting previous studies that they have a unique cardiac morphotype.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulses are an attractive alternative protein source for all mammals; however, recent reports suggest that these ingredients may be related to developing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. OBJECTIVES The primary objective of this study was to quantify the effects of dietary pulse intake by adult dogs on cardiac function using echocardiographic measurements and cardiac biomarkers N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and cardiac troponin I (cTnI). Second, to investigate the effects of pulse consumption on plasma sulfur amino acid (SAA) concentrations as pulses are generally low in SAA and may limit taurine synthesis. Last, to assess the general safety and efficacy of feeding pulse-containing diets on canine body composition and hematological and biochemical indices. METHODS Twenty-eight privately-owned domestic Siberian Huskies (13 females; 4 intact, and 15 males; 6 intact) with a mean age of 5.3 ± 2.8 y (± SD) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (n = 7/treatment), with equal micronutrient supplementation and increasing whole pulse ingredient inclusion (0%, 15%, 30%, and 45%) with pea starch used to balance protein and energy. RESULTS After 20 wks of feeding, there were no differences (P > 0.05) in echocardiographic parameters, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, and cTnI concentrations among treatments or across time within treatment (P > 0.05), indicating no differences in cardiac function among treatments. Concentrations of cTnI remained below the safe upper limit of 0.2 ng/mL for all dogs. Plasma SAA status, body composition, and hematological and biochemical indices were similar among treatments and over time (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results from this study suggest that increasing the inclusion of pulses up to 45% with the removal of grains and equal micronutrient supplementation does not impact cardiac function concurrent with dilated cardiomyopathy, body composition, or SAA status and is safe for healthy adult dogs to consume when fed for 20 wks.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION According to the most recent consensus guidelines on canine myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dogs with only left atrial enlargement (LAE) or left ventricular enlargement are classified as stage B1. The concomitant presence of LAE and left ventricular enlargement is needed to be classified as stage B2. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the prognosis in stage B1 and stage B2 according to the revised definition. The secondary aim was to assess the prognostic relevance of LAE in stage B1. ANIMALS A total of 440 dogs with MMVD, 276 in stage B1 and 164 in stage B2. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective and observational study. The left atrium-to-aorta ratio and the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter normalized were used to define cardiac dimensions. The long-term outcome was assessed by telephone interviews with owners and referring vets. Both cardiac-related and all-cause mortality were evaluated. RESULTS Stage B1 dogs had a longer median survival time than stage B2, considering both cardiac-related death (2344 vs. 1341 days; P<0.001) and all-cause mortality (1832 vs. 855 days; P<0.001). Age, left atrium-to-aorta ratio, and the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter normalized were independent predictors of cardiac-related death and all-cause mortality. Among stage B1, dogs with LAE lived shorter than those without LAE (1183 vs. 1882 days; P=0.005) considering all-cause mortality. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Stage B1 dogs lived longer than stage B2 dogs. Among stage B1, LAE had prognostic relevance considering all-cause mortality. This finding could add useful prognostic information in the management of preclinical MMVD.

Abstract
Specific microRNAs expressions may accurately characterize different stages of canine myxomatous mitral valve disease. This preliminary pilot study aimed to (1) describe the clinical and echocardiographic parameters of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels affected by myxomatous mitral valve disease at different American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stages (B1, B2 and C) and healthy control group (ACVIM A), comparing the parameters collected during the first examination (T0) and the end of the follow-up (T1); (2) assess the association between the values of echocardiographic parameters at T1 and the expression profile of miR-30b-5p at T0. Thirty-five Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (median age 4.29 years and median weight 9 Kg) in different ACVIM stages were included (7 A, 19 B1, 6 B2 and 3 C). Inverse probability weighting analysis was performed to estimate the association of the exposure variable (miR-30b-5p) with the outcome variables (clinical and echocardiographic variables). Time was included as variable. The results pointed out that high levels of plasma miR-30b-5p corresponded to lower values of left ventricular end-diastolic diameter normalized for body weight, end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes indexed for body weight, and left atrium-to aortic root ratio. Hence, higher miR-30b-5p expressions were associated with milder forms of mitral valve disease in our study population. In contrast, the results obtained for the intensity of heart murmur, the mitral regurgitation severity, and the Mitral INsufficiency Echocardiographic score) were not statistically significant. A relationship between high abundance of miR-30b-5p and myxomatous mitral valve disease that appear echocardiographically more stable over time has been demonstrated. In conclusion, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels affected by myxomatous mitral valve disease that at the first cardiologic evaluation showed an upregulation of miR-30b-5p are expected to experience lesser variations on their echocardiographic examination between T0 and T1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Information regarding the frequency of L waves and their prognostic relevance in dogs with secondary atrial fibrillation (AF) is limited. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To determine whether L waves occur and ascertain their prognostic role, as well as the role of other clinical and echocardiographic variables in dogs with AF. ANIMALS Fifty-five dogs with AF associated with myxomatous mitral valve disease or dilated cardiomyopathy. METHODS Retrospective, multicenter observational study. In addition to L waves analysis, other clinical and echocardiographic variables, including type of antiarrhythmic treatment, were evaluated. A survival analysis was performed to test for predictors of cardiac death and all-cause mortality using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS L waves were evident in 33/55 dogs (60%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 47%-72%) but their presence did not influence outcome. Increased left ventricular end-systolic diameter normalized for body weight (LVSDn) was a significant predictor of both cardiac death (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.41, 95% CI = 1.18-16.54; P = .03) and all-cause mortality (HR = 9.39, 95% CI = 2.49-35.32; P < .001). Heart rate assessed during echocardiography (Echo-HR) represented an additional significant predictor of cardiac death (HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.01; P = .04) and all-cause mortality (HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.01; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE L waves occurred frequently in dogs with AF, but held no prognostic relevance. Conversely, LVSDn and Echo-HR represented independent predictors of negative outcome in these animals.

Abstract
Background Amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker, is currently being investigated as a treatment for myxomatous mitral valvular degeneration (MMVD). However, the effects of amlodipine on moderate or severe spontaneous MMVD, based on changes in echocardiographic indices, remain unclear. Animals Client-owned small-breed dogs (n = 24) with naturally occurring MMVD of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage B2 or higher. Methods Basic dog information including previous medication treatments were recorded. All subjects received amlodipine 0.1 mg/kg, administered per os, twice daily for 7 days, in addition to their existing medication. We measured systolic blood pressure, obtained x-ray, echocardiography, blood test data before and after 1 week of amlodipine administration. Results Left ventricular end-diastolic internal diameter, left atrial diameter and E wave reduced statistically after 1 week of amlodipine treatment (all p < 0.001). No adverse effects were reported. Conclusions These findings suggest that low-dose amlodipine should be considered as treatment for dogs with ACVIM stage B2‒C MMVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography and 2-dimensional (2D) strain measurements of the right ventricle (RV) are important indices in humans with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and need further evaluation in dogs with PH. OBJECTIVES To evaluate various RV size and function indices in dogs with PH and to examine differences between pre- and postcapillary PH. ANIMALS A total of 311 client-owned dogs: 100 dogs with PH, 31 with postcapillary and 69 with precapillary PH, and 211 healthy control dogs. METHODS Retro- and prospective, multicenter study. Size and function of the RV was determined using several indices, derived using dedicated RV software, including 3D RV end-diastolic volume (EDVn), end-systolic volume (ESVn), ejection fraction, 2D global and free wall RV longitudinal strain (RVLS), end-diastolic area, end-systolic area, fractional area change, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, and tissue Doppler imaging-derived systolic myocardial velocity of the lateral tricuspid annulus (S'n). RESULTS The EDVn (1.8 vs 2.5 mL/kg0.942 , P < .01) and ESVn (0.8 vs 1.2 mL/kg0.962 , P < .001) were significantly larger in the PH group compared to healthy controls. Free wall RVLS was decreased in dogs with severe PH compared to controls (-24% vs -29.6%, P < .001). Dogs with precapillary PH had worse RV systolic function than dogs with postcapillary PH. CONCLUSION Three-dimensional echocardiography of the RV is a promising tool to detect RV changes in dogs with PH. Also, 2D strain measurements are able to detect decreased RV function and offer several advantages compared to conventional indices.

Abstract
Dogs suffering from Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) show a potential heart enlargement, especially in the left atrium, detectable by radiography. Due to digital radiography, different radiographic measurements estimate cardiac size quite uncomplicatedly. The Vertebral Heart Size (VHS), Radiographic Left Atrial Dimension (RLAD), Left Atrial Width (LAWidth), and the Vertebral Left Atrial Size (VLAS) used anatomical landmarks for measuring cardiac size in relation to the vertebral column. This study aimed to compare VHS, RLAD, LAWidth, and VLAS measured in conventional and inverted radiographs by veterinarians with different levels of experience in healthy dogs and dogs with MMVD. The reliability and user-friendliness of these measurements were evaluated, and the staging was compared to the echocardiography staging. A total of 50 unaffected dogs and 150 dogs with MMVD in stages B1, B2, and C were assessed. Three veterinarians with different levels of experience examined 200 conventional radiographs and their corresponding inverted radiographs blinded to the echocardiographic and clinical examination results. Analyses were performed to compare the measurements' grading and determine anatomical landmarks with measurement difficulties. Additionally, inter- and intraobserver agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient, and the agreement between radiographic and echocardiographic staging was compared using the kappa coefficient. The VHS, LAWidth, and VLAS were easier to define than the RLAD. The interobserver agreement was almost perfect for VHS (0.962) and good for the other radiographic measurements (RLAD: 0.778, LAWidth: 0.772, VLAS: 0.858). The VHS assigned the most dogs to the correct stage. However, VHS, RLAD, LAWidth, and VLAS presented an almost perfect intraobserver agreement. The dorsal left atrial margin of the RLAD was the most difficult measurement point to identify. The VHS is the most reproducible radiographic method for measuring the canine heart size and shows the highest agreement with echocardiography. An observer-related influence could be detected for RLAD, LAWidth, and VLAS.

Abstract
This prospective study aims to establish reference ranges for vertebral heart score (VHS), vertebral left atrial size (VLAS), and radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD) in pugs. The impact of clinical severity of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), gender, body condition score, and body weight on VHS, VLAS, and RLAD were investigated. Intra- and interobserver correlation was determined. Correlation of radiographic scores to echocardiographic left atrial dimension was inspected. Additionally, for VLAS and RLAD, correlation to VHS was examined. Additionally, an assessment of thoracic and vertebral malformations was performed. Forty-seven privately owned pugs underwent physical examination, echocardiography, and thoracic radiography to determine cardiac health. Thirty-two pugs were eligible for establishing reference ranges for VHS in right lateral radiographs, which was 11.25 ± 0.62 (95% range, 10.1–12.8). Reference ranges for VHS in left lateral, and for VLAS and RLAD in right lateral radiograph were determined in 30 pugs. The VHS in left lateral radiograph was 11.01 ± 0.70 (95% range, 9.4–12.6), VLAS was 1.96 ± 0.38 (95% range, 1.1–2.8), and RLAD was 1.59 ± 0.34 (95% range, 0.7–2.4). Clinical severity of BOAS did not show any impact on radiographic measurements. For VLAS, a significant correlation to VHS was detected by all observers. No other variables had a consistent influence on the radiographic scores given by all observers. Interobserver agreement was almost perfect for VHS (0.89 on right lateral and 0.91 on left lateral image), moderate for VLAS (0.49), and fair for RLAD (0.22). More than one third of the entire study population (18 of 47 pugs) showed at least one thoracic cavity or spine abnormality, often leading to considerable changes in vertebral body shape and size.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Cardiac time intervals (CTIs) can provide important information on the electrical and mechanical properties of the heart. We hypothesized that cardiac function can be described using the combined power of electrocardiography (ECG) and phonocardiography (PCG) signals. This study aimed to (1) validate a novel custom device in measuring CTI parameters; (2) compare CTI parameters with a commercially available device and standard transthoracic echocardiography (STE); and (3) compare calculated systolic performance index (SPI) and myocardial performance index (MPI) with Tei index from the STE. Materials and Methods: This study determined CTIs based on simultaneous ECG and PCG recordings in 14 healthy Beagle dogs using the custom-built device. These CTI parameters were compared with a commercially available device (Eko DUO ECG + Digital Stethoscope; Eko DUO) and the STE. Agreement of CTI parameters between the custom device and the commercially available device or STE was evaluated. Calculated SPI and MPI based on Wigger’s diagram were proposed, compared with SPI and Tei index, and correlated with STE parameters. Results: We found that the ECG and PCG parameters measured from the custom-built device did not differ from the commercially available device and the STE. By combining ECG and PCG signals, we established CTI parameters in healthy dogs including indices for systolic function (SPI: QS1/S1S2) and global cardiac function {F1 ([QS1+S2]/S1S2), F2 ([RS1+S2]/S1S2), and F3 (RS1 + [QS2-QT]/S1S2)}. The SPI, F2, and F3 were comparable with echocardiographic parameters describing systolic (Pre-ejection period/left ventricular ejection time [LVET]) and Tei index ([MCOdur-LVET]/LVET), respectively. Only SPI and F3 were correlated significantly with MCOdur and heart rate, respectively. Conclusion: We have validated the use of the custom-built device to describe CTIs that are comparable to the commercially available device and STE in healthy Beagles. The proposed SPI and MPI derived from CTI parameters can be useful in clinical practice to describe the cardiac function, especially in areas where access to STE is constrained.

Abstract
There is a growing interest in developing new molecular markers of heart disease in young dogs affected by myxomatous mitral valve disease. The study aimed to measure 3 circulating microRNAs and their application as potential biomarkers in the plasma of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with early asymptomatic myxomatous mitral valve disease. The hypothesis is that healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have different microRNA expression profiles than affected dogs in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage B1. The profiles can differ within the same class among subjects of different ages. This is a prospective cross-sectional study. Thirty-three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in ACVIM stage B1 were divided into three groups (11 younger than 3 years, 11 older than 3 years and younger than 7 years, and 11 older than 7 years), and 11 healthy (ACVIM stage A) dogs of the same breed were included as the control group. Three circulating microRNAs (miR-1-3p, miR30b-5p, and miR-128-3p) were measured by quantitative real-time PCR using TaqMan® probes. Diagnostic performance was evaluated by calculating the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC). MiR-30b-5p was significantly higher in ACVIM B1 dogs than in ACVIM A subjects, and the area under the receiver operating curve was 0.79. According to the age of dogs, the amount of miR-30b-5p was statistically significantly higher in group B1<3y (2.3 folds, P = 0.034), B1 3-7y (2.2 folds, P = 0.028), and B1>7y (2.7 folds, P = 0.018) than in group A. The area under the receiver operating curves were fair in discriminating between group B1<3y and group A (AUC 0.780), between B1 3-7y and A (AUC 0.78), and good in discriminating between group B1>7y and A (AUC 0.822). Identifying dogs with early asymptomatic myxomatous mitral valve disease through the evaluation of miR-30b-5p represents an intriguing possibility that certainly merits further research. Studies enrolling a larger number of dogs with preclinical stages of myxomatous mitral valve disease are needed to expand further and validate conclusively the preliminary findings from this report.

Abstract
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common complication in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). The aim of this study was to determine the survival time and to determine factors related to the survival time of dogs with PH secondary to DMVD stage C. A retrospective study was conducted in 37 dogs with PH secondary to DMVD stage C to analyse the median survival time and associated factors such as age, sex, breed, body weight, the presence of syncope, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, manifestation of congestive heart failure (CHF), vertebral heart score (VHS), the presence of left or right heart enlargement, probability of PH and medication. Data were analysed using the Log-Rank test and plotted with the Kaplan-Meier curve. The results showed that the median survival time of dogs with PH secondary to DMVD stage C was 368 days, and factors that shortened the median survival time of dogs with PH secondary to DMVD stage C were mixed breeds, VHS > 11.5, the presence of right heart enlargement, ascites and high probability of PH. Factors associated with an increased hazard of death were mixed breed dogs, dogs with right heart enlargement and ascites. These findings may be useful for the prognosis and management of dogs with PH secondary to DMVD stage C.

Abstract
The tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD) measures the longitudinal displacement of the mitral annulus during systole, using speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE). The main objective was to determine the TMAD means in healthy cats, exploring the correlations with systolic surrogates. The influence of age, body surface area (BSA), heart rate, and systemic blood pressure on the indices was also analyzed. One hundred ninety-three healthy, client-owned cats participated in this prospective, cross-sectional observational study undergoing conventional and STE. Apical four-chamber (AP4) and two-chamber (AP2) images were recorded for offline calculations. Mean TMAD values were similar to mitral annulus plane systolic excursion (MAPSE), varying between 4 to 4.8 mm depending on the annulus and image used. No significant differences between age and BSA categories were detected, except for AP4 MP%, reduced in the heavier group. TMAD variables showed moderate correlation with longitudinal strain (LSt) and MAPSE, but not with fraction shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF). The median time required for the offline calculation was 12.2 s for AP4 and 11.8 s for AP2. The technique showed moderate inter and intraobserver variation, proving a reliable tool for assessing left ventricular longitudinal systolic function in cats.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although challenging, predicting outcomes in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is of importance to owners and veterinarians. Our aim was to compare the prognostic value of selected one-, two-, and three-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic methods to predict cardiac-related and all-cause mortality in MMVD dogs. We hypothesize that three-dimensional methods would better predict prognosis than one- and two-dimensional methods. ANIMALS One-hundred thirty-eight privately-owned dogs with MMVD. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cox proportional Hazard analyses and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to investigate the predictive value of 14 variables; left atrial (LA) volume indexed to body weight (BW) measured by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) and calculated using Simpson's modified method of discs (SMOD) and the area-length method; LA diameter in short-axis and long-axis to aortic in short-axis ratio, effective regurgitant orifice area indexed to body surface area measured in RT3DE en face view and calculated using four-chamber (4Ch) and two-chamber views alone or in combination; percentage increase in left ventricular end-diastolic and systolic internal diameters; fractional shortening; E wave velocity; regurgitant jet area/LA area. RESULTS All 14 variables were significantly predictive of cardiac-related mortality, and 11 were predictive of all-cause mortality. The prognosis was best predicted by LA volume/BW estimated by SMOD or RT3DE, consistently showing the highest predictive value in all analyses. CONCLUSIONS Left atrial volume calculated by SMOD showed a similar predictive value compared to RT3DE. Performing SMOD from apical 4Ch images should be considered an alternative to RT3DE for echocardiographic examinations where prognostication of disease outcome is sought.

Abstract
The vertebral heart scale (VHS) was proposed by Buchanan and Bucheler as an objective method for estimating heart size in dogs. However, several studies have reported significant variation between breeds. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the VHS and to suggest a useful upper limit for normal heart size in Brittany Spaniels. The VHS was measured using a right lateral view in twenty-eight normal dogs and fifteen dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease. The mean ± SD (standard deviation) VHS was 10.6 ± 0.2 vertebrae (v) in the normal dogs, which differs significantly from the mean VHS of 9.7 ± 0.5 v in Buchanan’s original study with dogs of various breeds. The VHS in the dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease was 11.9 ± 1.1 v. With a threshold value of 11.1 vertebrae, the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for diagnosing a cardiomegaly are 90%, 72%, 53% and 96%, respectively.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is essentially a disorder of the valve, the progression of the disease leads to structural myocardial changes that may compromise left ventricular systolic function. Tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD) is a surrogate for longitudinal fiber function based on speckle tracking assessment of the movement of the mitral annulus toward the apex during systole. The aim of this study was to evaluate longitudinal systolic function with TMAD in dogs with DMVD. ANIMALS Ninety-four dogs with DMVD and 32 healthy dogs. METHODS Prospective cross-sectional observational study. Dogs with DMVD of various American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine classification stages and healthy control dogs underwent physical examination, electrocardiography, systolic blood pressure measurement, as well as a standard and speckle tracking echocardiography. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) and TMAD were used to assess longitudinal systolic function. RESULTS The global TMADmm and global TMAD% were higher in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine B2 animals than in the stage CD. Global TMAD (mm/kg,mm/bodyweight3, mm/m2) were correlated with GLS and ejection fraction. Global TMAD (mm/kg,mm/m2,%) and GLS were influenced by sex. In addition, systolic blood pressure influenced GLS (P < 0.01; r = -0.23), global TMADmm/kg (P = 0.017; r = -0.21) and global TMADmm/m2 (P = 0.031; r = -0.19). Tissue motion annular displacement was fast to be performed and produced good repeatability in dogs with DMVD. CONCLUSIONS Global TMAD (mm,%), was reduced in DMVD dogs with clinical signs of heart failure compared with stage B2. Tissue motion annular displacement was shown to be a repeatable technique for evaluation of longitudinal systolic function in dogs with DMVD.

Abstract
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) are predisposed to developing myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), with radiographs frequently used to screen for evidence of left-sided cardiomegaly secondary to MMVD. Vertebral heart size (VHS), vertebral left atrial size (VLAS), modified VLAS (M-VLAS), and radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD) are reported as objective measurements of global heart size and left atrial size. Normal VHS in CKCS (10.6 ± 0.5) is reportedly higher than the non-breed-specific value (9.7±0.5). Breed-specific VLAS, M-VLAS, and RLAD cut-offs have not been reported in CKCS. The aim of this prospective reference interval study was to describe the VHS, VLAS, M-VLAS, and RLAD values for 30 clinically healthy adult CKCS. Inclusion criteria were unremarkable physical examination, normal echocardiography, and thoracic radiographs without malposition/abnormalities. There were 22 female and eight male dogs. Ages ranged from 1 to 6 years. The VHS mean value in our sample was 10.08 ± 0.56 (95% range, 9.87-10.29). This was significantly greater than a previously published general canine reference value of 9.7 ± 0.5 and significantly less than a previously published CKCS breed-specific value of 10.6 ± 0.5 (P < 0.01). Mean VLAS, M-VLAS, and the RLAD values in our study were 1.79 ± 0.3 (95% range, 1.68-1.9), 2.23 ± 0.44 (95% range, 2.06-2.39), and 1.2 ± 0.34 (95% range, 1.07-1.33), respectively. These were significantly less than previously published reference interval values (P < 0.001). The VHS, M-VLAS, and the RLAD were not affected by sex, body weight, or BCS; whereas the VLAS was moderately affected by body weight. Findings from this study can be used as background for future thoracic radiographic assessments in CKCS.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) progression entails changes in the structural and functional properties of the heart affecting cardiac timings and intervals within the cardiac cycle. Conventionally, echocardiography is used to determine the cardiac time intervals (CTIs) including systolic and myocardial performance indices (SPI and MPI) in evaluating cardiac function. Alternatively, these CTIs can also be measured using simultaneous recordings of electrocardiography (ECG) and phonocardiography (PCG), but their values in different MMVD stages remain to be established. This study aimed to establish and prove the use of derived SPI and MPI from a dedicated device as a novel approach to assess cardiac function in different stages of MMVD dogs. Materials and Methods: A prospective study in 52 dogs with different MMVD stages measured the CTIs using a novel device. These were compared and correlated with standard echocardiographic parameters. The predictive value of SPI and three new proposed formulas to estimate MPI (i.e., F1, F2, and F3) in association with asymptomatic from symptomatic MMVD dogs were investigated. Results: Our findings revealed that CTI parameters measured from a novel device including QS1, QS2, S1S2, MPI-F1, and MPI-F2 were altered at different stages of MMVD. The SPI and all proposed MPI formulas were comparable with the systolic time interval and Tei index from echocardiography. In addition, the SPI, MPI-F1, and MPI-F2 were significantly correlated with the Tei index. However, the SPI was not able to differentiate the various stages of MMVD. Conversely, only the MPI-F1 (i.e., (QS1 + S2)/S1S2) demonstrated good predictive accuracy when compared between asymptomatic and symptomatic MMVD dogs similar to the Tei index. Moreover, this formula was able to differentiate stages B1 and C with remarkable predictive accuracy, higher sensitivity, and high specificity when compared with the Tei index. Conclusion: We have successfully described the CTI parameters in different MMVD stages using simultaneous ECG and PCG recordings in dogs. Furthermore, we have proven that the concept of using the newly proposed parameters from a novel device is equivalent to the Tei index. Thus, we established a novel approach to evaluate cardiac function and its supportive use in the diagnosis of MMVD patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Quantitative evaluation of the morphology of the mitral valve annulus (MVA) in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) may improve the techniques of mitral valve plasty. This study aimed to compare the MVA morphology on echocardiography in normal dogs and dogs with MMVD and to compare the echocardiographic and intraoperative measurements of the MVA in dogs with MMVD. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population comprised 59 healthy dogs (control group) and 371 dogs with MMVD (MMVD group). The anterior-posterior diameter and transversal diameter (TD) of the MVA and the aortic annulus diameter were measured by echocardiography to calculate the mitral valve flattening ratio, mitral annulus area (MAA), mitral annulus circumference (MAC), contraction ratio of the MAA and aortic annulus area. In the MMVD group, the mitral annulus diameter (MAD) was macroscopically measured during mitral valve plasty. Areas and lengths were divided by the body surface area (BSA) and √BSA, respectively, for comparative analyses. RESULTS The systolic and diastolic anterior-posterior diameter/√BSA, transversal diameter/√BSA, MAA/BSA converted to a natural logarithm (Ln(MAA/BSA)), and MAC/√BSA was significantly higher in the MMVD group than the control group, whereas flattening ratio values and contraction ratio of the MAA was significantly lower. Neither the aortic annulus diameter /√BSA nor the Ln(aortic annulus area/BSA) significantly differed between groups. In the MMVD group, diastolic MAC/√BSA and MAA/BSA correlated significantly with the MAD/√BSA. CONCLUSIONS The MVA is larger and rounder in dogs with MMVD than controls. Two-dimensional echocardiographic measures of MAA and MAC correlate well with intraoperative measures of MAD.

Abstract
Background Pimobendan is a widely used medication for the treatment of dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) and preclinical degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) with cardiomegaly. The benefit of a treatment in dogs with preclinical DMVD but without cardiomegaly has not yet been elucidated. Some positive effects concerning life quality and a decrease in cardiac biomarkers could be verified. This study aimed to further investigate these results using a placebo-controlled double-blinded crossover design. Out of a total of 15 dogs, eight were allocated to sequence-group AB, in which dogs received pimobendan (A) during the first treatment period and placebo (B) during the second period. Accordingly, sequence-group BA was treated first with placebo followed by pimobendan. Each treatment period lasted six months and included a baseline investigation and follow-ups after 90 and 180 days. The investigations included a questionnaire completed by the owners, echocardiographic examination, and measurements of NT-proBNP, cTnI and lactate before and after a standardised submaximal exercise test. Results NT-proBNP values decreased significantly during the treatment period with pimobendan, and the post-exercise increase was attenuated at day 180. No significant treatment effects could be verified for cTnI and lactate, neither pre- nor post-exercise. Left ventricular size decreased under treatment, whereas no significant changes in left atrial size were detected. The owners described their dogs under treatment with pimobendan as being more active at day 90 (11/15) and day 180 (12/15). Those animals treated with placebo were described as being more active at day 90 (2/15) and day 180 (5/15). Conclusions Pimobendan had reducing effects on the concentrations of pre- and post-exercise cardiac biomarkers and the size of the left ventricle in dogs with DMVD ACVIM B1. Exercise testing in addition to an assessment of cardiac biomarkers might improve the decision when to initiate pimobendan treatment in dogs with DMVD. Abstract
The development and progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) are difficult to predict. Thus, the identification of dogs with a morphotype associated with more severe mitral disease at a young age is desirable. The aims of this study were to: (1) describe the physical, morphometric, and echocardiographic features of class B1 MMVD-affected Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) according to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines; (2) evaluate the influence of morphometric physical measurements on murmur intensity, mitral valve prolapse (MVP), regurgitant jet size, and indexed mitral valve and annulus measurements. Fifty-two MMVD-affected CKCS were included in the ACVIM class B1. This is a prospective clinical cross-sectional study. Morphometric measurements, which included the body, thorax, and head sizes of each dog, were investigated to establish the association with heart murmur intensity, valvular and annular echocardiographic measurements, MVP, and regurgitant jet size, using inverse probability weighting (IPW) analyses to adjust for confounding. The IPW analyses showed that when the head length and nose length decreased, dogs had a more severe regurgitant jet size. Furthermore, subjects with a more pronounced head stop angle had thicker anterior mitral valve leaflets. A brachycephalic morphotype, as seen in dogs similar to the King Charles Spaniel breed in terms of cephalic morphology, is associated with a more severe regurgitant jet size and with valvular characteristics that are related to the most severe forms of MMVD.

Abstract
Simple Summary Two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography represents an advanced imaging technique that allows the analysis of global and regional myocardial function, cardiac rotation and synchronicity using deformation imaging. It has gained growing importance over the last decade, especially in human medicine as a method of evaluating myocardial function. This review aims to give an overview of the current understanding of this technique and its clinical applicability in the field of veterinary medicine with a focus on early detection of left ventricular dysfunction in dogs. Abstract Two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D–STE) is an advanced echocardiographic technique based on deformation imaging that allows comprehensive evaluation of the myocardial function. Clinical application of 2D–STE holds great potential for its ability to provide valuable information on both global and regional myocardial function and to quantify cardiac rotation and synchronicity, which are not readily possible with the conventional echocardiography. It has gained growing importance over the past decade, especially in human medicine, and its application includes assessment of myocardial function, detection of subclinical myocardial dysfunction and serving as a prognostic indicator. This review illustrates the fundamental concepts of deformation analysis and gives an overview of the current understanding and its clinical application of this technique in veterinary medicine, with a focus on early detection of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in dogs.

Abstract
Mitral valve disease (MVD) progression is associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance. This study hypothesized that sympathetic and parasympathetic tones would be altered with MVD progression. ANS activity was assessed among different MVD classes in untreated dogs. This cross-sectional retrospective study included 29 healthy control dogs and 71 dogs with MVD divided according to American College of Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines. Heart rate variability (HRV) analyses utilised time and frequency domains and were derived from 5 min, six-lead electrocardiogram recordings of sinus rhythm or respiratory sinus arrhythmia. While all time domain-related HRV parameters decreased with disease severity, only dogs in stage C exhibited significantly lower values (P < 0.05). High frequency (HF) band values decreased more than low frequency (LF) band values as disease severity increased (P < 0.05). The LF/HF ratio also progressively increased with MVD severity. A negative correlation was observed between HRV parameters and La/Ao ratio when the entire MVD case population was pooled (P < 0.05). Both sympathetic and parasympathetic tones were altered in dogs with MVD before clinical signs were observed and prior to the development of cardiomegaly. This is the first HRV study in untreated dogs with MVD. Investigating ANS imbalances preceding subclinical left-sided cardiomegaly in dogs with MVD should be considered in future age-matched, longitudinal studies to determine the potential benefits of early vagal tone augmentation in high-risk canine patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to provide echocardiographic reference intervals for English bulldogs (EBs) and to assess if age, sex, body weight (BW), and heart rate have an influence on echocardiographic variables. ANIMALS We prospectively enrolled client-owned EBs that were considered healthy based on unremarkable history, normal physical examination, six-lead electrocardiography, and transthoracic echocardiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS Breed-related reference intervals were provided, and associations between age, sex, BW, and heart rate and echocardiographic variables were tested using a multivariate analysis. Allometric scales were generated for echocardiographic variables showing correlation with BW. Moreover, echocardiographic variables obtained in our population of EBs and previous published reference ranges were compared. RESULTS Echocardiographic reference intervals were generated from 50 healthy adult EBs. As per the multivariate analysis, left atrial diameter (p = 0.015), left ventricular internal end diastolic diameter (p = 0.002), aortic valve annulus (p = 0.032), and pulmonary valve annulus (p = 0.017) resulted influenced by BW, and reference intervals were generated using allometric scales. Our study suggests that EBs tend to have a smaller aortic root and sphericity index than other breeds. In addition, EBs seem to have smaller indexed left ventricular volumes and higher left ventricular ejection fraction than boxers and Doberman. CONCLUSION Preliminary reference intervals in the EBs are reported, which might be helpful for accurate echocardiographic interpretation and screening purposes in this breed.

Abstract
Background There is no commonly shared severity score for myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) based on routinely acquired echocardiographic variables. Hypothesis/Objectives To propose an easy‐to‐use echocardiographic classification of severity of MMVD in dogs. Animals Five hundred and sixty dogs with MMVD. Methods This was a retrospective, multicenter, observational study. The proposed Mitral INsufficiency Echocardiographic (MINE) score was based on 4 echocardiographic variables: left atrium‐to‐aorta ratio, left ventricular end‐diastolic diameter normalized for body weight, fractional shortening, and E‐wave transmitral peak velocity. Specific echocardiographic cutoffs were defined based on previous prognostic studies on MMVD, and severity scores were assigned as follows: mild (score: 4‐5), moderate (score: 6‐7), severe (score: 8‐12), late stage (score: 13‐14). Results Median survival time was significantly different (P < .05) between the proposed severity classes: mild (2344 days, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1877‐2810 days), moderate (1882 days, 95% CI 1341‐2434 days), severe (623 days, 95% CI 432‐710 days), and late stage (157 days, 95% CI 53‐257 days). A MINE score >8 was predictive of cardiac death (area under the curve = 0.85; P < .0001; sensitivity 87%, specificity 73%). In the multivariable analysis, all the echocardiographic variables of the MINE score were independent predictors of death because of heart disease (P < .001). Conclusions and Clinical Importance The MINE score is a new easy‐to‐use echocardiographic classification of severity of MMVD, which has been proven to be clinically effective as it is associated with survival. This classification provides prognostic information and could be useful for an objective echocardiographic assessment of MMVD.

Abstract
Relatively little is known about pangolin care and physiology, and it has become increasingly important to have a better understanding of normal health parameters for evaluation of free-ranging, rehabilitating, and managed populations. Echocardiograms were performed on six African white-bellied pangolins (Phataginus tricuspis) under professional care at a single institution. Because of the propensity of pangolins to roll up with only thick keratinized scales exposed, the pangolins were anesthetized with either isoflurane or sevoflurane. All echocardiograms were performed and evaluated by a board-certified cardiologist. None of the pangolins had any evidence of prior cardiac disease. All standard measurements were obtained. Four pangolins (66.7%) had trace to mild mitral regurgitation, six (100%) had trace to mild tricuspid regurgitation, and two (33.3%) had trace to mild pulmonic regurgitation. All examinations were determined to be normal, with no evidence of valvular structural abnormalities, cardiac dysfunction, chamber enlargement, or cardiac hypertrophy. This report broadens understanding of normal echocardiogram parameters in pangolin species and contributes techniques and baseline data for veterinarians caring for these vulnerable populations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to screen for cardiac disease and report normal echocardiographic variables from a managed population of the African painted dog (Lycaon pictus; APD). The study included six male adult APDs under managed care with no evidence of significant structural cardiac disease. Echocardiography was performed with APD maintained under anesthesia with a combination of midazolam, butorphanol, and inhaled isoflurane. All animals underwent a full physical examination and two-dimensional (2D), M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography using standard views. Left ventricular volumes were calculated using the Simpson's method of discs. Medians with ranges were reported for the echocardiographic variables. No valvular structural abnormalities were noted. Trace mitral regurgitation was documented in five of six APD, trace tricuspid regurgitation in three of six, and mild pulmonic regurgitation in all APD. No aortic regurgitation was noted. Standard M-mode measurements fell within the normal ranges for allometrically scaled M-mode cardiac measurements for normal adult domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Two-dimensional measurements were comparable with that of domestic dogs with similar body weight. The study demonstrates a similarity in cardiac size and function compared with normal adult domestic dogs and provides baseline echocardiographic variables for investigation of cardiac health in other populations of APDs in the future.

Abstract
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common cardiac disease in dogs. It varies from dogs without clinical signs to those developing left-sided congestive heart failure, leading to death. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs) are particularly susceptible to MMVD. We hypothesised that within the elderly CKCS population, there is a sub-cohort of MMVD-affected dogs that do not have cardiac remodelling. The objectives of the present study were (i) to determine the prevalence and the degree of cardiac remodelling associated with MMVD; and (ii) assess the effect of age, gender, and body weight on echocardiographic status in a population of aged CKCSs. A total of 126 CKCSs ≥ 8 years old were prospectively included. They all had a physical and echocardiographic examination. A systolic murmur was detected in 89% of dogs; the presence of clinical signs was reported in 19% of them; and echocardiographic evidence of MMVD was described in 100%. Despite the high prevalence, 44.4% of the dogs were clear of echocardiographic signs of cardiac remodelling. Age was significantly associated with the presence and severity of cardiac remodelling and mitral valve prolapse. Our results showed that a proportion of elderly CKCS with confirmed MMVD did not undergo advanced stages of this pathology.

Abstract
Background In the absence of echocardiography, identification of cardiomegaly via thoracic radiography is a necessary criterion for classification of disease severity in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Objective Modified‐vertebral left atrial size (M‐VLAS) facilitates objective radiographic assessment of the left atrium (LA) in 2 dimensions and identifies LA enlargement more accurately than existing methods. Animals Sixty‐four dogs with various stages of MMVD and 6 control healthy dogs. Methods Retrospective case–control study. Medical records were searched for dogs with varying severity of MMVD. Modified‐vertebral left atrial size, vertebral left atrial size (VLAS), vertebral heart size (VHS), and radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD) were measured from thoracic radiographs and compared with echocardiographically derived measurements. Results Positive correlation to LA/Ao was identified for M‐VLAS (r = 0.77, P < .001), VLAS (r = 0.76, P < .001), RLAD (r = 0.75, P < .001), and VHS (r = 0.67, P < .001). Receiver operating characteristic analyzes provided an area under the curve of 0.97 (95% CI, 0.94‐1.00) for M‐VLAS, which was superior to VHS (0.90, 95% CI, 0.94‐1.00, P = .03) in identifying dogs with LA/Ao ≥1.6. A cut‐off value of ≥3.4 vertebrae using M‐VLAS provided 92.7% sensitivity and 93.1% specificity in predicting LA enlargement. Conclusions and clinical importance M‐VLAS, which is superior to VHS, offers an accurate and repeatable way to radiographically identify LA enlargement in dogs with MMVD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to evaluate taurine levels in English cocker spaniels with dilated cardiomyopathy and assess their survival time and natural progression of their disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective comparison of English cocker spaniels with dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype with and without taurine deficiency at the cardiology department of a UK academic referral centre between 2008 and 2018. RESULTS Taurine plasma concentration was available in 16 English cocker spaniels with dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype; 13 of 16 had congestive heart failure and three of 16 did not. Taurine concentration was low (<50 μmol/L) in 13 of 16 and normal in three of 16. Deficient dogs received taurine supplementation in addition to conventional cardiac medications. Eight dogs were still alive at the end of this study and eight were dead. MST for all dogs included in the study was 2800 days. Left ventricular systolic function improved and left ventricular dimensions reduced in English cocker spaniels with taurine deficiency following taurine supplementation and conventional cardiac therapy, although similar results were observed in English cocker spaniels with normal taurine concentration on cardiac therapy alone. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Based on laboratory reference intervals, low taurine concentrations were common in English cocker spaniels with dilated cardiomyopathy, showing a possible association between dilated cardiomyopathy in English cocker spaniels and taurine deficiency; supplementation with taurine was not curative.

Abstract
Background: Veterinary management of mitral valve regurgitation due to mxyomatous valve disease in dogs is limited to medical treatments, which only postpones the onset of congestive heart failure or alleviates clinical symptoms. Most surgical procedures to manage this condition in humans require cardiopulmonary bypass and have a high risk of complications. Animals: Eight dogs with naturally occurring mitral valve regurgitation. Methods: Prospective observational study. All dogs were treated with a novel edge-to-edge transcatheter device named ValveClamp. The total surgical procedural time and total catheterization time were recorded. Echocardiographic variables measured pre- and post-procedure were compared using Wilcoxin-signed rank test with a P < 0.05 considered significant. Data were expressed as median and interquartile range and absolute numbers and percentages. Results: The procedural success rate was 100% and all the dogs survived without complications. The median (interquartile range) total surgical procedural time was 86.5 (76–96.2) minutes and catheterization time was 23.5 (22–33.8) minutes. Echocardiography revealed a significant reduction in mitral regurgitation severity in all dogs following the procedure based on both a reduced mitral regurgitant maximum jet area (P = 0.012) and a reduced mitral regurgitant maximum jet area to left atrial area (P = 0.018). Conclusion: The ValveClamp device is effective at reducing the severity of mitral regurgitation in dogs with naturally occurring myxomatous valve disease.
