Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of bioactive films fabricated using chitosan (Cs) reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and polyphenolic components extracted using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), both derived from date seeds. The CsCNC films with NADES-extracted date seed polyphenols (DSP) showed significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, and Escherichia coli. Total phenolic content (0.01 to 0.20 mg GAE/mL), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (0.10 to 3.22 mmol TE/mL), and ferric-ion reducing antioxidant power (0.49 to 3.31 μmol TE/mL) improved significantly. Elongation at break (46.53 % to 90.87 %) and thickness (0.08 mm to 0.17 mm) increased while tensile strength (11.62 MPa to 3.30 MPa) decreased after incorporating DSP. The films improved UV-shielding ability, although DSP affected water barrier properties (2.91 to 7.83 × 10-10 g/m.s.Pa) and increased solubility and swelling rate. The performance of CsCNC bioactive film containing 4 % DSP for preserving veal meat during refrigeration for 8 days was studied. Compared to conventional cling film, the bioactive film retained meat quality by preserving pH, color, and lipid stability while delaying microbial spoilage. This study demonstrates the potential of valorizing both phenolic and cellulosic fractions from date seeds to develop an eco-friendly and bioactive packaging film.

Abstract
The global food waste crisis has significantly contributed to climate change, water pollution, and land degradation. Date palm waste, including seeds, fronds, and fruit pulp residues, represents a valuable source of bioactive compounds with potential applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This study presents a comparative evaluation of ultrasound-assisted extraction and other novel extraction techniques, such as pressure-based extraction, pulsed electric fields, microwaves, and natural deep eutectic solvents, for recovering bioactive compounds from date palm waste. These methods were assessed for their efficiency and sustainability in extracting antioxidants and phenolic compounds, and other bioactives while minimizing the use of harmful solvents and high temperatures. Critical factors, such as extraction time, solvent type, temperature, and pressure were crucial indicators to achieve higher extraction efficiencies with lower environmental impacts compared to traditional methods. Additionally, combining these techniques may further optimize the extraction process. This study contributes to the development of sustainable strategies for valorizing date palm byproducts and promoting a circular economy in the food industry. By developing sustainable extraction methods that minimize environmental impacts, this research directly supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Abstract
Date palm trees, fruits and leaves have historic life changes with human beings, and their utilizations started by using them as foods and remedy, especially against the resulting bruises of consecutive wars involving wounds, burnes and invasive diseases such as Malaria, Cholera and recently against the emergence of Covid-19 disease symptoms. The richness of palm date- fruits with reducing sugars, polyphenolic acids, flavonoid compounds, hydrosoluble and liposoluble vitamins makes them as versatile food and feed products. In part, minerals remain as the catalyst elements for these golden fruits. In other part, the distribution of essential oils at the mesocarps of date fruits and into date pits constitutes other integral part with substantial therapeutic and nutrigenomic contributions. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is a bound enzyme involved in the ripening of the date fruits. The aim of this book chapter is devoted in exploring the recent advances in date palm fruit cultivars as natural bioresources and the key elements beyond to their chemistry, biochemistry, and nutrition aspects, shedding lights on their important metabolites in enhancing food nutritional values, and human health attributes.

Abstract
Date processing industries generate substantial quantities of waste, including date seeds, which present disposal challenges and environmental concerns. Traditionally, date seed waste has been discarded through landfilling, open burning, or dumping, leading to soil, air, and water pollution. However, with increasing awareness of environmental sustainability and resource conservation, there is a growing interest in valorizing date seed waste using green extraction technologies and innovative food product development approaches for date seed valorization. Therefore, this review aims to explore the biochemical composition of date seeds and the application of green extraction technologies for recovering bioactive compounds. Moreover, this review focuseson the development of date seed-based functional foods, highlighting their applications in bakery, meat products, and beverages. Date seed waste contains both essential (e.g., amino acids, dietary fiber, minerals, etc.) and non-essential (e.g., phenolic compounds, oil, etc.) bioactive nutrients. Compared with traditional methods, green extraction technologies, such as ultrasound-assisted, microwave-assisted, sub or supercritical, enzymatic-assisted extraction, and microbial fermentation have significantly improved extraction efficiency. The incorporation of date seed in the development of breads, cookies, meat products, and beverages (date seed coffee and functional drinks) can enhance bioavailability, stability, and sensory attributes, while preserving the bio-functionality and health benefits. Moreover, date seed valorization can contribute to Sustainable Development Goals 2, 3, 12, and 13. In general, the utilization of date seed waste for the development of innovative food products presents a sustainable solution that is beneficial for both the environment and human health.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the concentrations of ascorbic acid and polyphenols in fruits and peels of Citrus medica and Ziziphus spina-christi grown in Ethiopia. Conditions of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) were optimized, using a multivariate experimental design. The optimum conditions of UAE were 15 min extraction time at 35 ℃, with 75 % aqueous methanol as solvent, and a fruit powder-to-solvent ratio (m/v) of 1:15. Among the different drying conditions investigated, freeze-drying was found to be appropriate for analyzing ascorbic acid, polyphenols, and antioxidant potential. The overall ranges, across the fruits and peels, of ascorbic acid, total polyphenols, and antioxidant potentials (EC50) obtained were 8.7 ± 1.4-91.2 ± 2.6 mg/100 g, 253.0 ± 6.3-764.1 ± 25.8 mg GAE/100 g and 2.4 ± 0.1-26.1 ± 2.9 mg/mL, respectively. This indicates that the fruits and peels of the studied plants are advantageous as sources of ascorbic acid and polyphenols.

Abstract
Mung beans contain abundant flavonoids like vitexin and isovitexin, which contribute to their strong bioactivities, such as antioxidant effects, so efforts should focus on extracting bioactive flavonoids as well as aligning with the goal of green extraction for specific applications. Deep eutectic solvent coupled with ultrasound-assisted extraction (DES-UAE) was applied to extract flavonoids from mung beans, and eight different DESs were compared on the extraction yield. In addition, the traditional extraction method with 30% ethanol was performed as the reference. The results showed that ethylene glycol-glycolic acid achieved the highest yield among all the DESs, 1.6 times that of the reference values. Furthermore, the DES-UAE parameters were optimized as a 60 mL/g liquid-solid ratio, 30% water content in DES, 200 W ultrasonic power, 67 °C ultrasonic temperature, and 10 min extraction time, leading to the DES extract with the maximum extraction yield of 2339.45 ± 42.98 μg/g, and the significantly stronger DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging ability than the traditional extract. Therefore, employing DES and ultrasonic extraction together offers a green method for extracting flavonoids from mung beans, advancing the development and utilization of plant-derived effective components in a sustainable manner.

Abstract
Flavonoid compounds have a variety of biological activities and play an essential role in preventing the occurrence of metabolic diseases. However, many structurally similar flavonoids are present in foods and are usually in low concentrations, which increases the difficulty of their isolation and identification. Therefore, developing and optimizing effective extraction and detection methods for extracting flavonoids from food is essential. In this review, we review the structure, classification, and chemical properties of flavonoids. The research progress on the extraction and detection of flavonoids in foods in recent years is comprehensively summarized, as is the application of mathematical models in optimizing experimental conditions. The results provide a theoretical basis and technical support for detecting and analyzing high-purity flavonoids in foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the impact of protocatechuic acid (PRC) treatments on the productivity and fruit quality of 'Le-Conte' pears, with a specific focus on productivity, stone cells content, and antioxidant activity. The research spanned over three consecutive cultivating seasons, with the first season serving as a preliminary study to determine the optimal PRC concentrations and the most effective number of spray applications. During the initial season, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize PRC concentration and application frequency. PRC was evaluated at concentrations ranging from 50 to 400 ppm, with treatment frequencies of either once or twice. Considering the optimal conditions obtained from RSM results, PRC treatments at 200 ppm and 300 ppm were applied twice, and their respective effects were studied in comparison to the control in the following seasons. RESULTS RSM results indicated that PRC at 200 and 300 ppm, applied twice, once during full bloom and again three weeks later, yielded the most significant effects. Subsequent studies revealed that PRC treatments had a substantial impact on various aspects of fruit production and quality. Applying 300 ppm PRC once during full bloom and again three weeks later resulted in higher fruit set percentages, lower fruit abscission, and enhanced fruit yield compared to untreated trees. Additionally, the 200 ppm PRC treatment maintained physicochemical characteristics such as fruit color, increased total soluble solids (TSS), and total sugar, and maintained higher ascorbic acid content and antioxidant capacity in the fruits while reducing stone cells content and lignin. Notably, enzyme activities related to phenylpropanoid metabolism and stone cells, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-Coumarate-CoA Ligase (4CL), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), and cinnamoyl-CoA reductase (CCR), as well as peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and laccase, were significantly regulated by PRC treatments. CONCLUSION Overall, this study suggests that PRC treatments are suitable for enhancing pear yield and quality, with PRC at 200 ppm being the more recommended option over 300 ppm. This approach serves as an effective strategy for achieving a balance between enhancing the productivity and fruit quality of 'Le-Conte' pears.

Abstract
Extracting polyphenolic bioactive compounds from Pinus elliottii needles, a forestry residue, promises economic and environmental benefits, however, relevant experimental data are lacking. Herein, a comprehensive investigation of the polyphenolic composition of pine needles (PNs) was carried out. Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) was applied to extract the polyphenolic compounds of pine needles. The optimal conditions of extracts were determined by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The maximum total phenolic content (TPC) of 40.37 mg GAE/g PNs was achieved with solid-liquid ratio of 1:20, 60 % ethanol, and 350 W for 25 min at 45 °C. Polyphenolic extracts showed antioxidant activity in scavenging free radicals and reducing power (DPPH, IC50 41.05 μg/mL; FRAP 1.09 mM Fe2+/g PNs; ABTS, IC50 214.07 μg/mL). Furthermore, the second-order kinetic model was also constructed to describe the mechanism of the UAE process, with the extraction activation energy estimated at 12.26 kJ/mol. In addition, 37 compounds in PNs were first identified by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS/MS, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. The results suggest that Ultrasound-Assisted is an effective method for the extraction of natural polyphenolic compounds from pine needles and this study could serve as a foundation for utilizing phenolics derived from PNs in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The demand for sustainable and eco-friendly extraction methods for bioactive compounds from natural sources has increased significantly in recent years. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of the microwave pretreated ultrasound-assisted extraction (MPUAE) process for the extraction of antioxidants (TPC, DPPH, and FRAP) from papaya pulp and peel. The optimized variables for the MPUAE process were determined using the Box-Behnken design tool of response surface methodology. Our results showed that the optimized variables for pulp and peel were 675.76 and 669.70 W microwave power, 150 s of irradiation time, 30 °C ultrasound temperature, and 19.70 and 16.46 min of ultrasonic extraction time, respectively. Moreover, the MPUAE process was found to be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to the conventional ultrasound-associated extraction (UAE) technique. The MPUAE process emitted less CO2 to the environment and had a shorter extraction time, resulting in a more sustainable and cost-effective extraction process. Our study suggests that the MPUAE process has the potential to be a promising and eco-friendly alternative for the industrial extraction of bioactive compounds from papaya and other natural sources.

Abstract
Herbal plants comprise potent bioactives, and they have a potential for the development of functional foods. Ultrasonication technology can be used to enhance the efficiency and quality of these bioactivities. The present review discussed the ultrasound-assisted novel extraction technologies (supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) and high pressurized liquid), including mechanistic understanding, influencing factors, extract process efficiency, and the recovery of bioactives with an industrial perspective. The strong observations of this study are the novel ultrasound-induced extraction process variables, such as ultrasound amplitude, sonication time, temperature, solid-solvent ratio, and pressure, are significantly influenced and must be optimized for maximum recovery of bioactives. The novel green technologies (ultrasound and assisted) could remarkably improve the extraction efficiency and enhance the quality of green extract. This review will support technological understanding about the impact on process parameters for the extraction of bioactives for the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
The present review explores the growing interest in the techniques employed for extracting natural products. It emphasizes the limitations of conventional extraction methods and introduces superior non-conventional alternatives, particularly ultrasound-assisted extraction. Characterization and quantification of bioactive constituents through chromatography coupled with spectroscopy are recommended, while the importance of method development and validation for biomarker quantification is underscored. At present, electrospun fibers provide a versatile platform for incorporating bioactive extracts and have extensive potential in diverse fields due to their unique structural and functional characteristics. Thus, the review also highlights the fabrication of electrospun fibers containing bioactive extracts. The preparation of biologically active extracts under optimal conditions, including the selection of safe solvents and cost-effective equipment, holds promising potential in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. Integration of experimental design into extraction procedures and formulation development is essential for the efficient production of health products. The review explores potential applications of encapsulating natural product extracts in electrospun fibers, such as wound healing, antibacterial activity, and antioxidant properties, while acknowledging the need for further exploration and optimization in this field. The findings discussed in this review are anticipated to serve as a valuable resource for the processing industry, enabling the utilization of affordable and environmentally friendly, natural, and raw materials.

Abstract
This study aimed to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters using response surface methodology (RSM) for the determination of ascorbic acid (AA), antioxidant activities/the half maximal effective concentration (EC50), total phenolic contents (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) of Ethiopian wild Syzygium guineense fruit and seed processed under different drying conditions. The optimizations of the UAE methods for the determination of AA, antioxidant activities (EC50 values), TPC, and TFC were evaluated using response surface methodology (RSM). The extraction time of 15 min, the temperature of 35 °C, extraction solvent composition (methanol:water) of 75 to 25%, and solid-to-solvent ratios of 1:15 w/v were the optimum independent parameters. The experimental and the predicted data of TPC, EC50, and AA were in good agreement with the overall error below 0.01%. It also indicated a hypothesized distribution of predicted data fitted with experimental data. The average TPC, EC50, and AA content in S. guineense fruits and the seed varied from 581.25 ± 37.13 to 1917.40 ± 26.15 mg GAE/100 g, 4.02 ± 0.42 to 155.73 ± 5.11 mg/100 g, and 1.96 ± 0.02 to 0.94 ± 0.00 mg/mL, respectively. This study indicated that this underutilized wild fruit and its seeds can be an alternative source of AA and antioxidant compounds.

Abstract
The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a popular edible fruit consumed all over the world and thought to cure several chronic diseases and afflictions. The profiling of the secondary metabolites of optimized ripe Ajwa date pulp (RADP) extracts is scarce. The aim of this study was to optimize the heat extraction (HE) of ripe Ajwa date pulp using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to increase its polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity. A central composite design was used to optimize HE to achieve the maximum polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of target responses as a function of ethanol concentration, extraction time, and extraction temperature. From RSM estimates, 75.00% ethanol and 3.7 h (extraction time), and 67 °C (extraction temperature) were the optimum conditions for generating total phenolic content (4.49 ± 1.02 mgGAE/g), total flavonoid content (3.31 ± 0.65 mgCAE/g), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (11.10 ± 0.78 % of inhibition), and cupric-reducing antioxidant capacity (1.43 µM ascorbic acid equivalent). The good performance of the ANN was validated using statistical metrics. Seventy-one secondary metabolites, including thirteen new bioactive chemicals (hebitol II, 1,2-di-(syringoyl)-hexoside, naringin dihydrochalcone, erythron-guaiacylglycerol-β-syringaresinol ether hexoside, erythron-1-(4'-O-hexoside-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-syrngaresinoxyl-propane-1,3-diol, 2-deoxy-2,3-dehydro-N-acetyl-neuraminic acid, linustatin and 1-deoxynojirimycin galactoside), were detected using high-resolution mass spectroscopy. The results revealed a significant concentration of phytoconstituents, making it an excellent contender for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Abstract
The Ajwa date (Phoenix dactylifera L., Arecaceae family) is a popular edible fruit consumed all over the world. The profiling of the polyphenolic compounds of optimized unripe Ajwa date pulp (URADP) extracts is scarce. The aim of this study was to extract polyphenols from URADP as effectively as possible by using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize the extraction conditions with respect to ethanol concentration, extraction time, and temperature and to achieve the maximum amount of polyphenolic compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to identify the URADP's polyphenolic compounds. The DPPH-, ABTS-radical scavenging, α-glucosidase, elastase and tyrosinase enzyme inhibition of optimized extracts of URADP was also evaluated. According to RSM, the highest amounts of TPC (24.25 ± 1.02 mgGAE/g) and TFC (23.98 ± 0.65 mgCAE/g) were obtained at 52% ethanol, 81 min time, and 63 °C. Seventy (70) secondary metabolites, including phenolic, flavonoids, fatty acids, and sugar, were discovered using high-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, twelve (12) new phytoconstituents were identified for the first time in this plant. Optimized URADP extract showed inhibition of DPPH-radical (IC50 = 87.56 mg/mL), ABTS-radical (IC50 = 172.36 mg/mL), α-glucosidase (IC50 = 221.59 mg/mL), elastase (IC50 = 372.25 mg/mL) and tyrosinase (IC50 = 59.53 mg/mL) enzymes. The results revealed a significant amount of phytoconstituents, making it an excellent contender for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Abstract
For thousands of years, plant has been widely applied in the medical area and is an important part of human diet. A high content of nutrients could be found in all kinds of plants, and the most outstanding group of nutrients that attracts scientists' attention is the high level of phenolic compounds. Due to the relationship between high phenolic compound content and high antioxidant capacity, plant extracts are expected to become a potential treatment for oxidation stress diseases including diabetes and cancer. However, according to the instability of phenolic compounds to light and oxygen, there are certain difficulties in the extraction of such compounds. But after many years of development, the extraction technology of phenolic compounds has been quite stable, and the only problem is how to obtain high-quality extracts with high efficiency. To further enhance the value of plant extracts, concentration and separation methods are often applied, and when detailed analysis is required, characterization methods including HPLC and LC/GC-MS will be applied to evaluate the number and type of phenolic compounds. A series of antioxidant assays are widely performed in numerous studies to test the antioxidant capacity of the plant extracts, which is also an important basis for evaluating value of extracts. This paper intends to provide a view of a variety of methods used in plants' phenolic compound extraction, separation, and characterization. Furthermore, this review presents the advantages and disadvantages of techniques involved in phenolic compound research and provides selected representative bibliographic examples.

Abstract
Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms is commonly used for medicinal purposes in Vietnam. In traditional medicine, the plant is used to cure ischemia, reduce inflammation, and increase cerebral blood circulation. Triterpene saponins are the major chemical constituents found in the roots of P. fruticosa. This compound exhibited a broad spectrum of biological effects, including lowering blood sugar, suppressing tumor growth and inflammation. This study focused on optimizing the process of total saponins extraction from P. fruticosa roots using the ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) method, ethanol solvent and response surface methodology, and Box–Behnken design model, then evaluating the cytotoxic effect against some cancer cell lines. The results showed that under the optimal conditions, including an extraction temperature of 60 °C and ultrasonic power of 185 W in 65 min, the maximum extraction yield and total saponin content were 14.51 ± 1.15% and 41.24 ± 1.68 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the saponin extract had cytotoxic effects against A549, HepG2, PC-3, and Hela. The results of this study confirmed that triterpene saponin is an important chemical component which is present in a high content in P. fruticosa roots and gives rise to significant biological activities. In addition, UAE can be used as a highly efficient method for triterpene saponins extraction from P. fruticosa roots.

Abstract
An ultrasound-assisted method was used for the extraction of phenolics from defatted black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.), and the effects of several extraction factors on the total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were investigated. To improve the extraction efficiency of phenolics from black cumin seed by ultrasonic-assisted extraction, the optimal extraction conditions were determined as follows: ethanol concentration of 59.1%, extraction temperature of 44.6 °C and extraction time of 32.5 min. Under these conditions, the total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity increased by about 70% and 38%, respectively, compared with conventional extraction. Furthermore, a complementary quantitative analysis of individual phenolic compounds was carried out using the HPLC-UV technique. The phenolic composition revealed high amounts of epicatechin (1.88–2.37 mg/g) and rutin (0.96–1.21 mg/g) in the black cumin seed extracts. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction can be a useful extraction method for the recovery of polyphenols from defatted black cumin seeds.

Abstract
Barhi date fruit is one of the most important fruits that has high consumer preference and market value at the Khalal maturity stage. However, this stage is very short and the fruit is vulnerable to decay and the ripening process under improper handling and storage conditions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing ultraviolet (UV-C) as a method to preserve the qualitative features of Barhi dates under various storage circumstances. The core of this study was defining the best conditions for UV-C treatment of Barhi dates, which was accomplished using a response surface methodology (RSM) model with a central composite, rotating four-factors-mixed-levels design (CCRD). The impacts of independent variables [UV-C exposure time (1, 2, 3, 4 min), UV-C dose (1, 3, 5, 7 kJ/m2), storage time (1, 6, 11, 16, 21 days) and storage temperature (1, 5, 15, 25 °C)] on the moisture content (MC), total soluble solids (TSS), total color changes (E), firmness, total phenolic content (TPC), total viable count (TVC), DPPH antiradical activity, fructose and glucose were investigated. The results revealed that the optimum UV-C treatment and storage settings for keeping the quality features of the dates were the UV-C exposure period and dosage of 1 min and 2.07 kJ/m2, and the storage time and temperature of 18 days and 12.36 °C, respectively. At the optimum conditions, the values of 59.66% moisture content, 38.24% TSS, 60.24 N firmness value, 48.83 ΔE, 0.07 log CFU/g TVC, 5.29 mg GAE/g TPC, 56.32% DPPH antiradical activity, 6.87 g/100 g fructose and 14.02 g/100 g glucose were comparable predicted values demonstrating the suitability of the used RSM models. Overall, the perfect UV-C treatment and storage circumstances for extending the storability and shelf life and maintaining the quality features of Barhi dates were identified in this study.

Abstract
The Barhi date is a high-quality date cultivar whose fruits (dates) are plucked and eaten fresh when they reach the Khalal maturity stage due to their sweetness, crispiness, and yellow skin color. After harvesting, Khalal Barhi fruits rapidly matured to the Rutab stage, where their tissues become soft and their skin color browner. This results in a decrease in their market value and customer demand. This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of the postharvest ultrasonic treatment in conserving the physical, microbial, and nutritional quality of Barhi fruits and extending their shelf life. To achieve the goals of the present work, the response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the optimization of the ultrasonic intensity (50, 100, 150, and 200 W/cm2) and application time (5, 10, 15, and 20 min) to preserve the Barhi dates high quality features for varied storage temperatures (1, 5, 15, and 25 °C) and duration (1, 6, 16, and 21 days). In RSM, a four-factors-mixed-levels central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was applied to optimize the ultrasound treatment and storage environments for better-quality physical [total soluble solids (TSS), firmness, and total color changes (ΔE)], microbial [total viable count (TVC)], nutritional [total phenolic content (TPC), DPPH antiradical activity, glucose, and fructose] features of Barhi dates. The outcomes showed that ultrasound intensity and its application time, storage temperature, and storage period influence the physical, microbial, and nutritional quality attributes in different magnitudes. The ideal settings for lessening the changes in the physical attributes, eliminating the microbial growth, and improving the nutritional quality attributes were 140 W/cm2, 5.2 min, 20.9 °C, and 21 days for ultrasound intensity, ultrasound exposure duration, storage temperature, and storage duration, respectively. In conclusion, this study proved the potential application of ultrasound for persevering the excellence aspects of Barhi dates and identified the ideal ultrasound environments for maintaining the physical, microbial, and nutritional quality features of Barhi dates during extended storing.

Abstract
Date seeds from the date palm fruit are considered as a waste and they are known to contain several bioactive compounds. Producing nanoparticles from the date seeds can enhances their effectiveness and their utilization as novel functional food ingredients. In this study, date seed nanoparticles (DSNPs) synthesized using acid (HCl) hydrolysis method (HCl concentration of 38% and hydrolysis time of 4 days) was found to have particle size between 50 and 150 nm. The obtained DSNPs were characterized by measuring particle size and particle charge (Zetasizer), morphology using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and determination of the functional groups using fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). DSNPs were further treated with green extraction technology [ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)] using water-based and methanol-based solvent for optimizing the extraction of the bioactive compounds by implementing response surface methodology (RSM). The UAE of DSNPs were analysed for set of responses including total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrlthydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity. Three-factor and four-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD) of three models (Synthesis of DSNPs, UAE with water, and UAE with methanol) was performed. The results showed that in UAE of DSNPs using water-based solvent, the key independent factors effecting the TPC and TFC and antioxidant activities were S:L ratio (40:1 mg/ml) and treatment time (9 min). Whereas the methanol-based UAE of DSNPs was mostly affected by US amplitude/power (90%) and methanol concentration (80%). All models were further optimized using response optimizer in Minitab and the generated predicted values were very comparable to the actual obtained results which confirm the significance and validity of all RSM models used. The phenolic compounds identified from DSNPs consisted mainly of 3,4-Dihydroxy benzoic acid, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid. The present study demonstrated a successful method for synthesising DSNPs as well as documented the optimum UAE conditions to maximize the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from DSNPs and enhancing their antioxidant activities to be used in food application.

Green Extraction of Date Palm Fruits via Ultrasonic-Assisted Approach: Optimizations and Antioxidant Enrichments. Processes (Basel) 2022. Abstract
Background: Green extraction involves using green solvents, such as water, to reduce energy consumption, avoid health and environmental hazards and induce the quality and quantity of the extract. Date palm fruits are a vital source of food and medicinal activities, as they contain a high diversity of phytochemicals, mainly phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The main aim of this study is to investigate the use of water as a green solvent, when assisted by different ultrasonic frequencies, in the extraction of four different cultivars of date palm fruits, by evaluating the phenolic and flavonoid composition as well as the antioxidant capacity of the extract. Methods: Four date palm fruits’ cultivars (Agwa, Anbarah, Khalas, and Reziz) were extracted using conventional methods (by water and ethanol) and by ultrasonic means, using two frequencies, 28 and 40 kHz, and applying temperatures (30, 45, and 60 °C), also measuring extraction times (20, 40, 60 min.). Response surface methodology was used for the statistical analysis, applying three factors (temperature, time, and ultrasonic frequency), four responses (total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, FRAP, and ABTS), and four cultivars (categories). Results: Conventional water extraction obtained minimal phenolic and flavonoid compounds (up to 52% of ethanol extraction). This percent improved to reach 60% when heat was utilized. The application of ultrasonic frequencies significantly enhanced the extraction of phenolics/flavonoids and the antioxidant ability of the extract to nearly 90% and 80%, respectively. The use of 40 kHz ultrasonic power managed to extract more phenolic and flavonoid components; however, the antioxidant capacities of the extract were less than when the 28 kHz power was utilized. Agwa and Khalas demonstrated themselves to be the best cultivars for ultrasonic-assisted extraction, depending on the results of the optimized responses. Conclusion: This study could be implemented in the industry to produce date palm fruits’ enriched extracts with phenolic and flavonoid components and/or antioxidants.

Barhi dates are widely consumed at Khalal maturity stage and preserving the freshness quality of Barhi at this stage is a challenging task as this period is short and the fruits are more perishable. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the infrared (IR) treatment and storage conditions for preserving the physicochemical, microbial, and bioactive attributes of fresh Barhi dates. The effect of four factors, IR temperature (50, 70, 90, and 110 °C), IR time (1, 2, 3, and 4 min), storage temperature (1, 5, 15, and 25 °C), and storage time (1, 6, 11, 16, and 21 days), on the responses of total soluble solids (TSS), hardness, total color change (ΔE), total viable count (TVC), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (DPPH), and glucose content were evaluated following central composite design (CCD). IR temperature, IR time, storage temperature, and storage time significantly affected the physical, microbial, and bioactive attributes of Barhi dates. The optimal conditions for minimizing the physical changes and microbial load and maximizing the bioactive attributes were IR temperature of 50 °C, IR time of 1.2 min, storage temperature of 1 °C, and storage time of 20 days. At the optimum conditions, the values of TSS, hardness, ΔE, TVC, TPC, DPPH, and glucose were 37.22%, 70.17 N, 11.12, 2.9 log CFU/g, 36.1 mg GAE/g, 65.31%, and 25.38 mg/g, respectively and these values were similar to predicted values. In conclusion, this study identified the ideal IR treatment and storage conditions for maintaining the overall quality attributes of Barhi dates during prolonged storage.

Abstract
Response surface methodology (RSM) is a widely used tool for modeling and optimization for food processes. The objective of this review is to evaluate recent findings on the use of RSM in the extraction of compounds from agri-food products. First, the steps for the application of RSM were briefly detailed. According to the analysis performed, RSM is suitable because it evaluates the effects of the independent variables and their interactions on the responses, which is ideal for the optimization of different techniques for the extraction of multiple bioactive compounds and therefore, in the various studies, has allowed to significantly increase the yield and even the biological activities of the extracts; however, RSM has limitations and considering the complexity and dynamics of foods, the challenge is much greater. In this sense, it was determined that simultaneous use with other techniques is necessary in order to optimally describe the process and obtain more accurate results.

Abstract
This study evaluates the application of eco-friendly deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in the extraction of phenolic antioxidants from dogbane leaf-tea (DLT). The results showed DESs with lower viscosity allowed an efficient extraction of significantly higher contents of total phenolics or flavonoids. An innovative and high-efficient solvent, choline chloride-levulinic acid (ChCl-LevA), was screened and used in ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds from DLT. According to full factorial design experimental results, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, and anti-α-glucosidase activity (α-GIA) of the DLT extracts were simultaneously optimized by response surface methodology. Sonication temperature and water content in ChCl-LevA were found to be the major factors affecting the TPC, TFC, antioxidant activity, and α-GIA of DLT extracts. Under the optimum parameters (water content in ChCl-LevA was 45%, sonication temperature was 50 °C, and extraction time was 30 min), the measured results for all the responses were obtained as follows: TPC-91.38 ± 7.20 mg GAE/g DW, TFC-84.12 ± 3.47 mg RE/g DW, ABTS+-492 ± 7.33 mmol TE/g DW, FRAP-6235 ± 121 μmol Fe(II)/g DW and α-GIA-230 ± 7.59 mmol AE/g DW, which were consistent with the predicted values. In addition, strongly significant positive correlations were observed between TPC/TFC and bio-activities of the DLT extracts. HPLC results indicated high contents of (-)-epigallocatechin (4272 ± 84.86 μg/g DW), catechin (5268 ± 24.53 μg/g DW), isoquercitrin (3500 ± 86.07 μg/g DW), kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside (3717 ± 97.71 μg/g DW), and protocatechuic acid (644 ± 1.65 μg/g DW) were observed in the DLT extracts. In contrast to other extraction methods, ChCl-LevA-based UAE yielded higher TPC, TFC, individual phenolic contents, stronger antioxidant activity, and α-GIA. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis further confirmed that ChCl-LevA-based UAE enhanced the disruption of cell wall structure, thereby making more phenolic antioxidants released from DLT. In short, ChCl-LevA-based UAE was confirmed to be an innovative and high-efficient method for extraction of phenolic antioxidants from DLT. Dogbane leaves can be considered as a good tea source rich in natural antioxidants.
