Structure of macroalgal communities on tropical rocky shores inside and outside a marine protected area

Effects of harvesting and an invasive mussel on intertidal rocky shore communities based on historical and spatial comparisons

Intertidal rocky shores are the most accessible marine habitats and therefore heavily impacted by harvesting. In recent years, they have also been increasingly invaded by alien species, which compounds the effects of harvesting on rocky shore community composition and functioning. Recent survey data, combined with historical data from 1970, were used to assess temporal changes over the intervening period in rocky shore communities at two sites (Wireless Point and Wireless Island). Three kinds of changes emerged: (1) the appearance of alien species; (2) the effects of increased harvesting pressure; and (3) the direct and indirect effects of these changes on other species. A striking result was transformation of mid-shore zones on exposed shores by the appearance of the invasive Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, and the indirect effects of this on the demography and vertical zonation patterns of the granular limpet Scutellastra granularis. Adult limpets have become excluded by the mussel, whereas juveniles find a secondary home on the shells of the mussel and their abundance has increased. To further disentangle the effects of harvesting from those of alien invasions, a spatial comparison was made between two currently unharvested no-take sites (Scarborough South and Scarborough North) and two regularly harvested sites (Kommetjie and Wireless Point). Harvesting has substantially depleted the granite limpet Cymbula granatina and Argenville's limpet Scutellastra argenvillei. This has led to the proliferation of opportunistic seaweeds, such as Ulva spp. The dual effects of alien invasive species and over-harvesting have major ecosystem effects but do not necessarily diminish biodiversity because the alternative habitats that have developed provide opportunities for colonisation by additional species.

Temporal dynamics of benthic communities in a hypereutrophic bay through functional groups and abiotic variables

This study aimed to examine the benthic structure of Guanabara Bay's (GB) rocky shores through Functional Diversity (FD) perspective. Over a five-year period, benthic communities were periodically examined using photographic samples from the meso-littoral zone. FD were analysed using the Rao Index of marine macroalgae and benthic invertebrates' functional groups (FGs) and their relationship was investigated through null models, considering temporal, geographical, and environmental variations. The entrance site exhibited exclusive FGs and overlap niches more than expected by chance, while the inner site had a higher frequency of Bacterial Biofilm and predominance of competitive exclusion. Orthophosphate and nitrate showed significant correlations with FGs inside the bay, whereas average irradiance and rainfall were at the entrance. A functional gradient was registered, with higher Rao's Index values at the entrance compared to the inner site, probably due to increased anthropogenic disturbance and abundance of FGs with opportunistic life strategies inside GB.

Functional redundancy and stability in a subtidal macroalgal community in the Southwestern Atlantic coast

Functional redundancy can stabilize ecological functions as asynchronous fluctuations among functionally similar species may buffer environmental changes. We investigated the temporal dynamics of a subtidal macroalgal community in the warm temperate Southwestern Atlantic coast (SWA) to evaluate whether functional redundancy stabilize ecosystems functions through compensatory dynamics under realistic environmental scenarios. Despite temporal variations in the community structure occurred, a high stability in macroalgal coverage was found at the community-level driven by taxa asynchronous fluctuations. No relationship between functional redundancy and stability occurred, suggesting that functional compensation cannot surpass the influence of environmental fluctuations on the performance of ecological functions. Declines in Sargassum species abundance, along with its low functional redundancy, indicate that this canopy-forming algae must be prioritized in conservation efforts in the SWA. Our study adds to the comprehension and generalization of biodiversity-stability findings in natural systems across distinct geographical areas, also contributing to their operationalization in marine ecosystems.

The Potential of Seaweeds as a Source of Functional Ingredients of Prebiotic and Antioxidant Value

Two thirds of the world is covered by oceans, whose upper layer is inhabited by algae. This means that there is a large extension to obtain these photoautotrophic organisms. Algae have undergone a boom in recent years, with consequent discoveries and advances in this field. Algae are not only of high ecological value but also of great economic importance. Possible applications of algae are very diverse and include anti-biofilm activity, production of biofuels, bioremediation, as fertilizer, as fish feed, as food or food ingredients, in pharmacology (since they show antioxidant or contraceptive activities), in cosmeceutical formulation, and in such other applications as filters or for obtaining minerals. In this context, algae as food can be of help to maintain or even improve human health, and there is a growing interest in new products called functional foods, which can promote such a healthy state. Therefore, in this search, one of the main areas of research is the extraction and characterization of new natural ingredients with biological activity (e.g., prebiotic and antioxidant) that can contribute to consumers' well-being. The present review shows the results of a bibliographic survey on the chemical composition of macroalgae, together with a critical discussion about their potential as natural sources of new functional ingredients.
