Abstract
Abalone, a highly sought-after aquatic product, possesses significant nutritional value. In this study, the relationship between aroma characteristics and lipid profile of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) during seasonal fluctuation and thermal processing were profiled via volatolomics and lipidomics. 46 aroma compounds and 371 lipids were identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS and UPLC-Q-Extractive Orbitrap-MS, respectively. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that carbonyls (aldehydes and ketones) and alcohols were the characteristic aroma compounds of abalone. The fluctuations in the aroma compound and lipid composition of abalone were consistent with the seasonal variation, especially seawater temperature. In addition, based on the correlation analysis, it was found that carbonyls (aldehydes and ketones) and alcohols had a positive correlation with phospholipids (lysophosphatidylethanolamines and lysophosphatidylcholines), while a negative correlation was observed with fatty acyls. These findings suggested that the effect of seasonal variations on the aroma changes of abalone might achieved by modulating the lipids composition of abalone.

Abstract
Climate change influences the distribution of many marine species. To project the biogeographical changes of benthic mollusks in response to climate change in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, ensemble species distribution models (SDMs) were applied. Ensemble SDMs performed well for ten of the thirteen selected benthic mollusks with environmental variables including temperature, salinity, current velocity, and depth. Six cold water mollusks, including bivalves Acila mirabilis, Ennucula niponica, Ennucula tenuis, Nuculana yokoyamai, Pendaloma otohimeae and Megayoldia japonica, were projected to contract their habitats and move northward in 2050s and 2100s under all of the RCP2.6, 4.5, 6.0 and 8.5 climate scenarios, with temperature being the most important environmental variable. Two warm water mollusks (bivalves Nucula tokyoensis and Leptomya minuta) were projected to lose their suitable habitats under future climate scenarios (all RCP scenarios), while two (the gastropod Cylichna biplicata and the bivalve Moerella hilaris) were projected to expand their habitats to the deeper water area. The most important environmental variable varied among warm water species between temperature, salinity and depth. This study will contribute to better understanding the marine species biogeographical changes under climate change, and thus we can better protect their biodiversity.

Abstract
Foams are a ubiquitous feature of marine environments. They can have major economic, societal and ecological consequences through their accumulation on the shore. Despite their pervasive nature and evidence that stable foam deposits play a pivotal role in the ecology of soft shore and estuaries, very limited amounts of information are available on their contribution to the structure and function at play in rocky intertidal ecosystems. This study shows that the metabolic rate of the high-shore gastropod Littorina saxatilis is significantly higher in individuals exposed to foams. Behavioural assays conducted under laboratory-controlled conditions further show that this species detects foam-born infochemicals both indirectly or directly, hence rely on both airborne and contact chemosensory cues. L. saxatilis also actively avoid areas covered in foam, and increase their activity in the presence of foam. These observations are interpreted in terms of foam-induced increased metabolic stress and increases behavioural anxiety and vigilance. They are further discussed in relation to the occurrence of two phytoplankton species known to produce repellent and/or toxic compounds such as domoic acid and dimethylsulfoniopropionate, the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata and the haptophyte Phaeocystis globosa, with the latter occurring at unusually high density. Taken together, these results suggest that the accumulation of foams on intertidal rocky shores may have major implications on taxa relying on both airborne and contact chemosensory cues to navigate, find food and mating partners. Specifically, the observed increased behavioural activity coupled with increased metabolic demands may impact species fitness and highlight potentially large ecological consequences in rocky intertidal ecosystems characterized by strong hydrodynamism and elevated organic matter content leading to the presence of long-lived foam.

Abstract
Opisthorchiasis is one of the most serious trematodiases in Russia, where the world's largest focus is located in the Ob basin. Temperature is an important factor affecting the metabolism of cold-blooded animals. It determines the development of the causative agent of opisthorchiasis, Opisthorchis felineus, and the success of infection of an intermediate host, the snail Bithynia troschelii. In the present study, the effect of water temperature on the development of the liver fluke O. felineus in the host snail was assessed, as was the temperature threshold at which B. troschelii hibernation initiates. Adult uninfected B. troschelii individuals collected from natural bodies of water were infected with O. felineus and maintained at different temperatures of water (18-30 °C, intervals of 3 °C) in the laboratory. Each snail was fed with embryonated uterine eggs of O. felineus at 24 °C. O. felineus infection in snails was detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific primers. The prevalence of O. felineus infection in B. troschelii depends on the water temperature in which the snails are maintained. The highest infection rate of 45.2 % ± 12.1 % was observed at 27 °C (p ≥ 0.1). The longest lifespan of infected and uninfected B. troschelii was recorded at water temperatures of 24 and 27 °C. The snails were more successfully infected at the beginning of the warm season. Among the infected individuals, the majority (up to 85 %) were large snails. Cercarial shedding was not detected in experimentally infected snails. Apparently, this is due to the natural physiological state of Bithynia snails during the autumn-winter diapause, when opisthorchiids development in snails stops. At 10 °C, complete hibernation of all B. troschelii snails was observed, and infection by the trematodes became impossible. The highest prevalence of infection was recorded at 27 °C, suggesting that during climate warming, an increase in opisthorchiid infection of snails may occur, which must be considered when epidemiological measures are planned.

Abstract
3D printable biopolymer nanocomposites composed of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and functionalized plant-based monomers demonstrate potential as sustainable and structural biomaterials. To increase this potential, their printability and performance must be improved. For extrusion-based 3D printing, such as Direct Ink Writing (DIW), printability is important for print fidelity. In this work, triglycerol diacrylate (TGDA) was added to an acrylated epoxidized soybean oil:polyethylene glycol diacrylate resin to increase hydrogen bonding. Greater hydrogen bonding was hypothesized to improve printability by increasing the ink's shear yield strength, and therefore shape holding after deposition. The effects of this additive on material and mechanical properties were quantified. Increased hydrogen bonding due to TGDA content increased the ink's shear yield stress and viscosity by 916% and 27.6%, respectively. This resulted in improved printability, with best performance at 3 vol% TGDA. This composition achieved an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 32.4 ± 2.1 MPa and elastic modulus of 1.15 ± 0.21 GPa. These were increased from the 0 vol% TGDA composite, which had an UTS of 24.8 ± 1.8 MPa and a modulus of 0.88 ± 0.06 GPa. This study demonstrates the development of bio-based additive manufacturing feedstocks for potential uses in sustainable manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and biomaterial applications.

Abstract
Bifenthrin (BF) is ubiquitous in aquatic environments, and studies have indicated that environmental concentrations of BF could cause neurotoxicity and oxidative damage in fish and decrease the abundance of aquatic insects. However, little information is available on the toxicity of BF in freshwater benthic mollusks. Bellamya aeruginosa (B. aeruginosa) is a key benthic fauna species in aquatic ecosystems, and has extremely high economic and ecological values. In this study, larval B. aeruginosa within 24 h of birth were exposed to 0, 30 or 300 ng/L of BF for 30 days, and then the toxic effects from molecular to individual levels were comprehensively evaluated in all the three treatment groups. It was found that BF at 300 ng/L caused the mortality of snails. Furthermore, BF affected snail behaviors, evidenced by reduced crawling distance and crawling speed. The hepatopancreas of snails in the two BF exposure groups showed significant pathological changes, including increase in the number of yellow granules and occurrence of hemocyte infiltration, epithelial cell thinning, and necrosis. The levels of ROS and MDA were significantly increased after exposure to 300 ng/L BF, and the activities of two antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT were increased significantly. GSH content decreased significantly after BF exposure, indicating the occurrence of oxidative damage in snails. Transcriptomic results showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in pathways related to metabolism and neurotoxicity (e.g., oxidative phosphorylation and Parkinson disease), and these results were consistent with those in individual and biochemical levels above. The study indicates that environmental concentration of BF results in decreased survival rates, sluggish behavior, histopathological lesions, oxidative damage, and transcriptomic changes in the larvae of B. aeruginosa. Thus, exposure of larval snails to BF in the wild at concentrations similar to those used in this study might have adverse consequences at the population level. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further assessing the ecological risk of BF to aquatic gastropods.

Abstract
Limax maximus, or great gray slug, is a common agriculture pest. The pest infests crops during their growth phase, creating holes in vegetable leaves, particularly in seedlings and tender leaves. A study was conducted to assess the insecticidal activity of Ageratina adenophora extract against these slugs. Factors such as fecundity, growth, hatching rate, offspring survival rate, protective enzyme activity, and detoxifying enzyme activity were examined in slugs exposed to the extract's sublethal concentration (LC50) for two different durations (24 and 48 h). The phytochemical variability of the extracts was also studied. The LC50 value of the A. adenophora extract against L. maximus was 35.9 mg/mL. This extract significantly reduced the hatching rate of eggs and the survival rate of offspring hatched from exposed eggs compared with the control. The lowest rates were observed in those exposed for 48 h. The survival, growth, protective enzyme, and detoxification activity of newly hatched and 40-day-old slugs decreased. The A. adenophora extract contained tannins, flavonoids, and saponins, possibly contributing to their biological effects. These results suggest that the extract could be used as an alternative treatment for slug extermination, effectively controlling this species.

Abstract
The growing availability of smart meter data has facilitated the development of energy-saving services like demand response, personalized energy feedback, and non-intrusive-load-monitoring applications, all of which heavily rely on advanced machine learning algorithms trained on energy consumption datasets. To ensure the accuracy and reliability of these services, real-world smart meter data collection is crucial. The Plegma dataset described in this paper addresses this need bfy providing whole- house aggregate loads and appliance-level consumption measurements at 10-second intervals from 13 different households over a period of one year. It also includes environmental data such as humidity and temperature, building characteristics, demographic information, and user practice routines to enable quantitative as well as qualitative analysis. Plegma is the first high-frequency electricity measurements dataset in Greece, capturing the consumption behavior of people in the Mediterranean area who use devices not commonly included in other datasets, such as AC and electric-water boilers. The dataset comprises 218 million readings from 88 installed meters and sensors. The collected data are available in CSV format.

Abstract
Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a globally distributed nematode and the leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. As a global hotspot for this disease, Hawaii's agricultural exports may be contributing to the spread of A. cantonensis. Phytosanitary irradiation doses of 150 or 400 Gy provide quarantine security against multiple insect pests. We evaluated the in vitro and in vivo effects of phytosanitary irradiation on infectious, third-stage, A. cantonensis larvae. In vitro experiments directly exposed larvae to irradiation doses ranging from 200 to 1,000 Gy. Results showed low mortality and no dose response across all treatments 27 days post-irradiation. In vivo studies isolated larvae from wild-caught Parmarion martensi after exposure to x-ray irradiation at doses of 0, 150, and 400 Gy and infected them into laboratory rats. Fourteen rats were assigned to each treatment and infected with 50 larvae from their assigned irradiation dose. Results at 3 and 6 weeks post-infection demonstrated a significant negative dose response in regard to the number of larvae that migrated to the brain and adults found in the pulmonary artery. No irradiated larvae that grew into adults were able to produce eggs. These findings indicate that x-ray irradiation does not result in the direct mortality of A. cantonensis larvae; however, it does affect the infectivity and reproduction of A. cantonensis within its definitive host, the rat. Phytosanitary irradiation at doses ≥150 Gy appears to be an effective means of preventing the establishment of viable populations of A. cantonensis, thus reducing the potential for global spread due to agricultural exports from Hawaii.

Abstract
Shear-thinning materials have held considerable promise as embolic agents due to their capability of transition between solid and liquid state. In this study, a laponite nanoclay (NC)/alginate gel embolic agent was developed, characterized, and studied for transcatheter based minimally invasive procedures. Both NC and alginate are biocompatible and FDA-approved. Due to electrostatic interactions, the NC/alginate gels exhibit shear-thinning properties that are desirable for transcatheter delivery. The unique shear-thinning nature of the NC/alginate gel allows it to function as a fluid-like substance during transcatheter delivery and as a solid-like embolic agent once deployed. To ensure optimal performance and safety in clinical applications, the rheological characteristics were thoroughly investigated to optimize the mechanical properties of the NC/alginate gel, including storage modulus, yield stress/strain, and thixotropy. To improve physicians' experience and enhance the predictability of gel delivery, a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches was used to assess the injection force required for successful delivery of the gel through clinically employed catheters. Overall, NC/alginate gel exhibited excellent stability and tunable injectability by optimizing the composition of each component. These findings highlight the gel's potential as a robust embolic agent for a wide range of minimally invasive procedures.

Abstract
The brain is a remarkably capable and efficient system. It can process and store huge amounts of noisy and unstructured information, using minimal energy. In contrast, current artificial intelligence (AI) systems require vast resources for training while still struggling to compete in tasks that are trivial for biological agents. Thus, brain-inspired engineering has emerged as a promising new avenue for designing sustainable, next-generation AI systems. Here, we describe how dendritic mechanisms of biological neurons have inspired innovative solutions for significant AI problems, including credit assignment in multi-layer networks, catastrophic forgetting, and high-power consumption. These findings provide exciting alternatives to existing architectures, showing how dendritic research can pave the way for building more powerful and energy efficient artificial learning systems.

Abstract
Sub-zero (°C) additive manufacturing (AM) systems present a promising solution for the fabrication of hydrogel structures with complex external geometry or a heterogeneous internal structure. Polyvinyl alcohol cryogels (PVA-C) are promising tissue-mimicking materials, with mechanical properties that can be designed to satisfy a wide variety of soft tissues. However, the design of more complex mechanical properties into additively manufactured PVA-C samples, which can be enabled using the toolpath, is a largely unstudied area. This research project will investigate the effect of toolpath variation on the elastic and viscoelastic properties of PVA-C samples fabricated using a sinusoidal toolpath. Samples were fabricated using parametric variation of a sinusoidal toolpath, whilst retaining the same overall cross-sectional area, using a sub-zero AM system. To mechanically characterise the samples, they were tested under tension in uniaxial ramp tests, and through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The elastic and viscoelastic moduli of the samples are presented. No correlations between the parametric variation of the design and the Young's modulus were observed. Analysis of the data shows high intra-sample repeatability, demonstrated robust testing protocols, and variable inter-sample repeatability, indicating differences in the printability and consistency of fabrication between sample sets. DMA of the wavelength samples, show a frequency-dependent loss moduli. The storage modulus demonstrates frequency independence, and a large increase in magnitude as the sample increases to 3 wavelengths.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of material and printing orientation on wear resistance and flexural properties of one low force SLA- and two DLP-printed splint materials and to compare these 3D-printed splints to a subtractively manufactured splint material. METHODS Two DLP-printed (V-Print splint, LuxaPrint Ortho Plus) and one low force SLA-printed (Dental LT Clear) material, where specimens were printed in three printing orientations (0°, 45°, 90°), were investigated. In addition, one milled splint material (Zirlux Splint Transparent) was examined. A total of 160 specimens were produced for both test series. The two-body wear test was performed in a chewing simulator (80'000 cycles at 50 N with 5-55 °C thermocycling). Steatite balls were used as antagonists. The wear pattern was analyzed with a 3D digital microscope in terms of maximum vertical intrusion depth (mm) and total volume loss (mm³). The flexural properties were investigated by three-point bending in accordance with ISO 20795-1: 2013 (denture base polymers). The flexural strength (MPa) and the flexural modulus (MPa) were measured. Two-way ANOVA was performed to investigate the effects of the two independent variables material and printing orientation for the three 3D-printed materials. The comparison of the printing orientations within one material was carried out with one-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey tests. RESULTS Two-way ANOVA revealed that wear and flexural properties are highly dependent on the 3D-printed material (p < 0.001). Across groups, a significant effect was observed for wear depth (p = 0.031) and wear volume (p = 0.044) with regard to printing orientation but this was not found for flexural strength (p = 0.080) and flexural modulus (p = 0.136). One-way ANOVA showed that both DLP-printed groups showed no significant differences within the printing orientations in terms of wear and flexural properties. Dental LT Clear showed that 90° oriented specimens had higher flexural strength than 0° oriented ones (p < 0.001) and 45° oriented specimens also showed higher values than 0° ones (p = 0.038). No significant differences were observed within the printing orientations for flexural modulus and wear behaviour within this group. T-tests showed that the milled splints exhibited statistically higher wear resistance and flexural properties compared to all three 3D-printed splint materials (p < 0.001) and that highly significant differences were found between the 3D-printed splint materials for both test series. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be stated that wear behaviour and flexural properties are highly dependent on the 3D-printed material itself. Currently, milled splints exhibit higher wear resistance and flexural properties compared to 3D-printed splint materials. The printing orientation has a minor influence on the properties investigated. Nevertheless, two-way ANOVA also showed a significant influence of printing orientation in the wear test across groups and one-way ANOVA detected significant effects for SLA material in terms of flexural strength, with printing in 90° showing the highest flexural strength. Therefore, anisotropy was found in SLA material, but it can be limited with the employed printing parameters. Both DLP-printed materials showed no significant difference within the printing orientation.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) accumulation in rocky shore organisms has limited knowledge. This study investigated MPs accumulation in filter-feeding oysters, herbivorous limpets and carnivorous snails to assess their performance as sentinel species in the MPs trophic transfer. The samples were obtained along a contamination gradient in the Santos Estuarine System, Brazil. All three studied species showed MPs concentrations related to the contamination gradient, being the oysters the species that showed the highest levels, followed by limpets and snails (average of less and most contaminated sites of 1.06-8.90, 2.28-5.69 and 0.44-2.10 MP g-1, respectively), suggesting that MPs ingestion rates are linked to feeding habits. MPs were mainly polystyrene and polyacetal. The polymer types did not vary among sites nor species. Despite minor differences in percentages and diversity of size, shape, and color classes, the analyzed species were equally able to demonstrate dominance of small, fiber, transparent, black and blue MPs. Thus, oysters, limpets, and snails are proposed as sentinels of MPs in monitoring assessments.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel approach for measuring the polymerization shrinkage of dental resin composites - measurement of sample depth variation. This new method was compared with two testing methodologies used for assessing the polymerization shrinkage (buoyancy and strain gauge methods). Eleven commercial resin composites were investigated (EverX Posterior; EverX Flow Bulk & Dentin; G-aenial Anterior, Posterior, A'chord & Universal Injectable; Filtek One Bulk Fill & Universal Restorative; SDR + Flow and Aura Bulk Fill). In addition, filler content (wt. %), flexural modulus, and the degree of conversion were evaluated. Shrinkage values, obtained by the buoyancy method, are greater than shrinkage evaluated by the strain gauge. There are significant differences in polymerization shrinkage among the tested resin composite materials. There is a strong correlation between the newly proposed method of shrinkage measurement and the buoyancy method (r2 = 0.8; p < 0.01). There is no correlation between volumetric shrinkage measurement (depth changes and buoyancy method) and linear strain measurement. Volumetric filler amount correlates with shrinkage values evaluated by all three methods. The degree of conversion for the tested resin composites ranges from 36 % to 52 %. There are some differences (around 10 %) between the filler content (wt. %) measured by the ashing-in-air method and the data given by the manufacturers. The highest flexural modulus is 14.8 GPa and the lowest 6.6 GPa. New formulations may introduce unknown relationships between the fundamental properties of dental resin composites.

Abstract
Most fractures in the third metacarpal bone of equine athletes occur due to repeated cycles of high load magnitudes and are commonly generated during fast-training workouts. These repetitive loads may induce changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties that can develop into subchondral bone (SCB) injuries near the articular surface. In this study, we investigated the fatigue behaviour of local regions in SCB (near the articular surface i.e., 2 mm superficial SCB and the underlying 2 mm deeper SCB) under a simulated fast-training workout of an equine athlete. A fatigue test on SCB specimens was designed to simulate the fast-training workout, which comprised of repeated load cycles with varying load magnitude, representing the varying gait speed during a fast-training workout. The fatigue test was applied three times to each of the five cylindrical SCB specimens harvested from the left and right metacarpal condyles of five thoroughbred racehorses). All specimens completed at least one fatigue test. Three specimens completed all three fatigue tests with no visible cracks identified with Micro-CT scans. The other two specimens failed in the second fatigue test, and cracks were identified with Micro-CT scans in the various local regions. Using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) analysis, we found that in the local regions of all specimens, modulus decreased between load cycles corresponding to 68 and 93 MPa load magnitudes (equivalent to the fastest gallop speed). Wherein specimens that failed exhibited a greater decrease in modulus (in superficial SCB by 45.64 ± 5.66% and in deeper SCB by -36.85 ± 10.47% (n = 2)) than those not failed (in superficial SCB by -7.45 ± 14.62% and in deeper SCB by -5.67 ± 7.32% (n = 3)). This has provided evidence that the loads on SCB at galloping speeds are most likely to produce fatigue damage and that the damage induced is localised. Furthermore, one of the failed specimens exhibited a peak in the tensile strain rather than compressive strain in the superficial region with a rapid decrease in modulus. In addition, the superficial region of all specimens exhibited greater residual tensile strain than that of the deeper region.

Abstract
Institution-level wastewater-based surveillance was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including in carceral facilities. We examined the relationship between COVID-19 diagnostic test results of residents in a jail in Atlanta, Georgia, USA (average population ≈2,700), and quantitative reverse transcription PCR signal for SARS-CoV-2 in weekly wastewater samples collected during October 2021‒May 2022. The jail offered residents rapid antigen testing at entry and periodic mass screenings by reverse transcription PCR of self-collected nasal swab specimens. We aggregated individual test data, calculated the Spearman correlation coefficient, and performed logistic regression to examine the relationship between strength of SARS-CoV-2 PCR signal (cycle threshold value) in wastewater and percentage of jail population that tested positive for COVID-19. Of 13,745 nasal specimens collected, 3.9% were COVID-positive (range 0%-29.5% per week). We observed a strong inverse correlation between diagnostic test positivity and cycle threshold value (r = -0.67; p<0.01). Wastewater-based surveillance represents an effective strategy for jailwide surveillance of COVID-19.

Abstract
The rhizome of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for over 2000 years. The fresh Chinese herb possesses micro toxicity and is thus traditionally alternately steamed and basked nine times to alleviate the toxicity and enhance the pharmaceutical efficacy. Different processing cycles usually result in variable therapeutic effects in the processed Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (P-PCH). However, it can be hard to tell these various P-PCHs apart at present. To identify the P-PCHs that had undergone repeated steaming one to nine times, the chemical constituents were profiled based on Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Quadruple-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, and the Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis methods were adopted to discriminate different cycles of P-PCH. A total of 44 characteristic markers were identified, which allowed the P-PCHs to be discriminated exactly.

Abstract
The family of phosphatidylethanolamine-binding proteins (PEBPs) participates in various plant biological processes, mainly flowering regulation and seed germination. In cucurbit crops, several PEBP genes have been recognized to be responsible for flowering time. However, the investigation of PEBP family members across the genomes of cucurbit species has not been reported, and their conservation and divergence in structure and function remain largely unclear. Herein, PEBP genes were identified from seven cucurbit crops and were used to perform a comparative genomics analysis. The cucurbit PEBP proteins could be classified into MFT, FT, TFL, and PEBP clades, and further, the TFL clade was divided into BFT-like, CEN-like, and TFL1-like subclades. The MFT-like, FT-like, and TFL-like proteins were clearly distinguished by a critical amino acid residue at the 85th position of the Arabidopsis FT protein. In gene expression analysis, CsaPEBP1 was highly expressed in flowers, and its expression levels in females and males were 70.5 and 89.2 times higher, respectively, than those in leaves. CsaPEBP5, CsaPEBP6, and CsaPEBP7 were specifically expressed in male flowers, with expression levels 58.1, 17.3, and 15.7 times higher, respectively, than those of leaves. At least five CsaPEBP genes exhibited the highest expression during the later stages of corolla opening. Through clustering of time-series-based RNA-seq data, several potential transcription factors (TFs) interacting with four CsaPEBPs were identified during cucumber corolla opening. Because of the tandem repeats of binding sites in promoters, NF-YB (Csa4G037610) and GATA (Csa7G64580) TFs appeared to be better able to regulate the CsaPEBP2 and CsaPEBP5 genes, respectively. This study would provide helpful information for further investigating the roles of PEBP genes and their interacting TFs in growth and development processes, such as flowering time regulation in cucurbit crops.

Abstract
Determining the macronutrient requirements for commercially valuable aquaculture species remains crucial for maximising production efficiency. Yet, such information is lacking for Australian hybrid abalone (Haliotis rubra × Haliotis laevigata), particularly with respect to life stage and water temperatures. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary protein inclusion level on the growth performance, nutrient utilisation and nutritional quality of juvenile (3·3 g) Australian hybrid abalone reared at three different temperatures representative of winter (12°C), average annual (17°C) and summer (22°C) grow-out periods and fed five diets containing graded dietary protein levels of 35, 38, 41, 44 and 47 %. Abalone growth increased with increasing water temperature with weight gains of approximately 100, 280 and 380 % of their initial weight at 12, 17 and 22°C, respectively. Furthermore, the present study clearly demonstrated that higher dietary protein inclusion levels (41 %) than those currently used commercially (35 %) would significantly improve the growth performance when water temperatures are ≥17°C without any adverse impacts on nutrient utilisation, nutrient deposition or nutritional quality of the abalone soft tissue. For example, at 22°C abalone fed a diet containing 41 % protein obtained a significantly higher weight gain percentage (421 %) compared with those fed a diet containing 35 % protein (356 %). Lastly, it is suggested that maintaining a dietary protein inclusion level of 35 % or implementing a 'least cost' feeding approach during cooler seasons, or where water temperatures are ∼12°C, may be beneficial, considering only marginal growth improvements were observed during these periods of slow growth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the population distribution of intermediate host snails and crabs of Paragonimus along the Jiulongjiang River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Bopingling Mountain, southern Fujian Province, so as to provide baseline data for researches on parasitic disease prevention and control and enlargement of samples in the parasitic resource bank. METHODS A total of 23 villages in 8 counties (districts) along the Jiulong River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province were selected as survey sites during the period from November 2020 through March 2023, and snail and freshwater crabs were sampled from 1 to 3 streams and ditches neighboring residential areas in each village. Morphological identification of snails was performed according to the external morphological characteristics of collected snail shells, and the unidentified snail species sampled from the natural foci of paragonimiasis in Yunxiao County were subjected to se-quence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene. The crab species was identified by observing the morphological characteristics of the terminal segment of the first pleopod of male crabs, and Paragonimus cercariae and metacercariae were detected in collected snails. RESULTS The shells of the unidentified snails sampled from the natural foci of paragonimiasis in Yunxiao County were approximately 50 mm in height and 18 mm in width, thick and solid, long tower cone-shaped, and had 8 to 10 whorls. CO1 gene sequence analysis identified the snail species as Sulcospira hainanensis. A total of 6 freshwater snail species belonging to 5 genera within 3 families, identified 23 survey sites, including Semisulcospira libertina, Paludomus zhangchouensis and S. hainanensis that belonged to the Family Pleurceridae, Tricula fujianensis and T. huaanensis that belonged to the subfamily Triculinae, Family Pomatiopsidae, and Melanoides tuberculata (Family Thiaridae), and 11 species of freshwater crabs belonging to 5 genera within 2 families were identified, including Sinopotamon genus of S. jianglense, S. pinheense, and S. zhangzhouense, Huananpotamon genus of H. planopodum and H. zhangzhouense, Nanhaipotamon genus of N. huaanense and N. longhaiense, and Minpotamon genus of M. nasicum and M. auritum that belonged to the Family Potamidae, and Somanniathelphusa genus of S. huaanensis and S. zhangpuensis (Family Parathelphusidae). In addition, the prevalence of P. westermani cercariae infections was 0.08% (2/2 317) in P. zhangchouensis from Danyan Village in Changtai District and 0.09% (1/1 039) in S. hainanensis from Jinkeng Village in Yunxiao County, and the prevalence of P. westermani metacercariae infections was 25.81% (8/31) in S. jianglense from Danyan Village in Changtai District, and 26.31% (5/19) in S. zhangzhouense from Jinkeng Village in Yunxiao County, respectively. CONCLUSIONS There is a population diversity in the intermediate host snails and crabs along the Jiulongjiang River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Bopingling Mountain, southern Fujian Province, and P. zhangzhouensis and S. hainanensis are, for the first time, confirmed as the first intermediate hosts of P. westermani.

Abstract
A survey for slug- and snail-associated nematodes was conducted in forests, parks, botanical gardens, and nature reserves at 13 localities in Belgium to uncover more diversity of gastropod mollusc-associated nematodes and to characterise Pellioditis populations found in the country. A total of 319 slugs and snails belonging to nine species were examined. Arion vulgaris was the most commonly found mollusc species in this study (eight locations), and 19.4% of the examined mollusc specimens were found infected by nematodes. The highest prevalence of nematodes was observed in Cornu aspersum (60%) followed by A. vulgaris (34.8%), Limax maximus (28.6%), and Cepaea sp. (20%). Eleven nematode species belonging to eight families were isolated and identified from the mollusc hosts including Alloionema appendiculatum, Angiostoma dentiferum, A. gandavense, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Cosmocerca longicauda, Panagrolaimus cf. subelongatus, Pellioditis californica, P. hermaphrodita, Rhabditis sp., Tetrameres cf. fissispina, and Troglostrongylus cf. brevior.Pellioditis was the most commonly found nematode genus (at nine localities) and C. longicauda and P. californica were reported in Belgium for the first time. Co-infections of more than one nematode species were observed in eight (2.5%) molluscs specimens. Most co-infections consisted of two nematode species. In one A. vulgaris specimen, a co-infection of three nematode species (A. vasorum, P. hermaphrodita, and Tetrameres cf. fissispina) was observed. Four ex vivo cultures of P. californica and six ex vivo cultures of P. hermaphrodita were established from single hermaphrodites, and both species were described based on light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and morphometric, morphological, and molecular data.

Abstract
Inundative biological control (biocontrol) efforts in pest management lead to the mass distribution of commercialized biocontrol agents. Many 'biocontrol gone awry' incidents have resulted in disastrous biodiversity impacts, leading to increased scrutiny of biocontrol efforts. The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is sold as a biocontrol agent on three continents and targets pest gastropods such as Deroceras reticulatum, the Grey Field Slug; P. hermaphrodita is not presently approved for use in the United States. Investigations into the potential for P. hermaphrodita to infect non-target gastropod species of conservation relevance, however, are limited. We examined the effects of three strains of P. hermaphrodita on mortality in Monadenia fidelis, the Pacific Sideband, a snail species endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America, in laboratory conditions. Across a 71-day laboratory infectivity assay, snails exposed to each of the three nematode strains, each analyzed at two doses, experienced a mean 50% mortality by days 20-42. All nematode-treated snails were dead by the end of the study. By contrast, 30/30 water-control snails experienced no mortality. Nematodes killed smaller, juvenile-stage snails significantly faster than those in larger and more developmentally advanced hosts. Our results provide direct evidence that the biocontrol nematode P. hermaphrodita infects and kills M. fidelis, a non-target gastropod species endemic to the Pacific Northwest, in laboratory conditions. This study suggests that introduction of P. hermaphrodita to new ecosystems might negatively impact endemic gastropod biodiversity and advocates for further investigation of non-target effects, including in conditions closer to the natural environments of non-target species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The elimination of schistosomiasis remains a challenging task, with current measures primarily focused on the monitoring and control of Oncomelania hupensis (O. hupensis) snail, the sole intermediate host of Schistosome japonicum. Given the emerging, re-emerging, and persistent habitats of snails, understanding their genetic diversity might be essential for their successful monitoring and control. The aims of this study were to analyze the genetic diversity of Oncomelania hupensis robertsoni (O. h. robertsoni) using microsatellite DNA markers; and validate the applicability of previously identified microsatellite loci for O. hupensis in hilly regions. METHODS A total of 17 populations of O. h. robertsoni from Yunnan Province in China were selected for analysis of genetic diversity using six microsatellite DNA polymorphic loci (P82, P84, T4-22, T5-11, T5-13, and T6-27). RESULTS The number of alleles among populations ranged from 0 to 19, with an average of 5. The average ranges of expected (He) and observed (Ho) heterozygosity within populations were 0.506 to 0.761 and 0.443 to 0.792, respectively. The average fixation index within the population ranged from - 0.801 to 0.211. The average polymorphic information content (PIC) within the population ranged from 0.411 to 0.757, appearing to be polymorphic for all loci (all PIC > 0.5), except for P28 and P48. A total of 68 loci showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P < 0.05), and pairwise Fst values ranged from 0.051 to 0.379. The analysis of molecular variance indicated that 88% of the variation occurred within snail populations, whereas 12% occurred among snail populations. Phylogenetic trees and principal coordinate analysis revealed two distinct clusters within the snail population, corresponding to "Yunnan North" and "Yunnan South". CONCLUSIONS O. h. robertsoni exhibited a relatively high level of genetic differentiation, with variation chiefly existing within snail populations. All snail in this region could be separated into two clusters. The microsatellite loci P82 and P84 might not be suitable for classification studies of O. hupensis in hilly regions. These findings provided important information for the monitoring and control of snail, and for further genetic diversity studies on snail populations.

Abstract
Elysia crispata is a tropical sea slug that can retain intracellular functional chloroplasts from its algae prey, a mechanism termed kleptoplasty. This sea slug, like other gastropods, secretes mucus, a viscous secretion with multiple functions, including lubrication, protection, and locomotion. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of the mucus proteome of the sea slug E. crispata using gel electrophoresis and HPLC-MS/MS. We identified 306 proteins in the mucus secretions of this animal, despite the limited entries for E. crispata in the Uniprot database. The functional annotation of the mucus proteome using Gene Ontology identified proteins involved in different functions such as hydrolase activity (molecular function), carbohydrate-derived metabolic processes (biological processes) and cytoskeletal organization (cell component). Moreover, a high proportion of proteins with enzymatic activity in the mucus of E. crispata suggests potential biotechnological applications including antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Putative antimicrobial properties are reinforced by the high abundance of hydrolases. This study also identified proteins common in mucus samples from various species, supporting a common mechanism of mucus in protecting cells and tissues while facilitating animal movement. SIGNIFICANCE: Marine species are increasingly drawing the interest of researchers for their role in discovering new bioactive compounds. The study "Proteomic Analysis of the Mucus of the Photosynthetic Sea Slug Elysia crispata" is a pioneering effort that uncovers the complex protein content in this fascinating sea slug's mucus. This detailed proteomic study has revealed proteins with potential use in biotechnology, particularly for antimicrobial and antitumor purposes. This research is a first step in exploring the possibilities within the mucus of Elysia crispata, suggesting the potential for new drug discoveries. These findings could be crucial in developing treatments for severe diseases, especially those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, and may lead to significant advances in medical research.

Abstract
In this study, we collected 56 species of fishery organisms (including fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, gastropods, and bivalves) from four seasonal survey cruises at the Dachen fishery grounds. We measured the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, and Hg) in these fisheries organisms. We determined their trophic levels using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope techniques. We analyzed the characteristics of heavy metal transfer in the food chain. The results showed significant differences in heavy metal concentrations among different species. Among all biological groups, bivalves and gastropods exhibited higher levels of heavy metal enrichment than other biological groups, while fish had the lowest levels of heavy metal enrichment. Heavy metals exhibited different patterns of nutritional transfer in the food chain. While Hg showed a biomagnification phenomenon in the food chain, it was not significant. Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and As exhibited a trend of biodilution with increasing nutritional levels, except for As, which showed no significant correlation with δ15N.

Abstract
Little is known about a possible association of autoimmune inner ear disease among patients diagnosed with polymyositis (PM)/dermatomyositis (DM). This study aimed to explore differences in the prevalence of inner ear symptoms among patients with and without PM/DM using a nationwide population-based dataset. Data for this study were retrieved from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The study sample included 1622 patients diagnosed with PM/DM and 8109 propensity-score matched comparison patients without PM/DM. We performed multivariate logistic regressions to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for tinnitus, hearing loss, sudden deafness, and vertigo among patients with PM/DM versus comparison patients. Chi-square tests showed statistically significant differences between patients with PM/DM and comparison patients in the prevalence of tinnitus (16.1% vs. 12.7%, p < 0.001), non-conductive hearing loss (9.2% vs. 6.8%, p < 0.001), and vertigo (14.4% vs. 11.1%, p < 0.001). The adjusted ORs for tinnitus, non-conductive hearing loss, and vertigo, respectively, were 1.332 (95% CI = 1.147-1.547), 1.399 (95% CI = 1.154-1.696), and 1.374 (95% CI = 1.173-1.611) for patients with PM/DM when compared to comparison patients. Our study finds that patients with PM/DM have higher prevalence rates of tinnitus, non-conductive hearing loss, and vertigo than comparison patients.

Abstract
Cameroon monomodal rainforest zone has a strong agricultural activity and is therefore exposed to pesticides. Furthermore, the area possesses climatic factors that favor the growth of Achatinadea snails known as African giant snails, a delicacy for the local population. The present study aimed to evaluate pesticides contamination (less vs more exposed areas) through assessment of exposure and impact on Achatinadea snails. Achatinadea snails were collected within intensive agricultural areas (Njombe and Kribi rural) and in areas with less agricultural activity (Ebodje and Dibombari). Collection was performed at night between July and September 2020 using an adapted square kilometer method. Type, number, weight, and size of the collected snails were analyzed and compared using Welsh's One-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA). After removing the soft part from the shell, the presence of pesticides was determined using mass spectrometry. Histological analysis of kidney and ovo-testis was performed using eosin-hematoxylin staining. Results showed that the main variety of snails collected are Archachatina marginata. In areas with less agricultural activity, snails are bigger than those from more agricultural areas heavily using pesticides. Furthermore, pesticides detection showed that glyphosate, but not metalaxyl, is present in animals coming from all the collection sites. Cypermethrin was found in all the samples except in those from Dibombari. Histology revealed that the structure of the kidney and ovo-testis of snails from more exposed areas is impaired. In conclusion, this study revealed that some pesticides are transferred to snail and impair the structure of important organs.

Abstract
Motor imagery (MI) is the mental execution of actions without overt movements that depends on the ability to imagine. We explored whether this ability could be related to the cortical activity of the brain areas involved in the MI network. To this goal, brain activity was recorded using high-density electroencephalography in nineteen healthy adults while visually imagining walking on a straight path. We extracted Event-Related Desynchronizations (ERDs) in the θ, α, and β band, and we measured MI ability via (i) the Kinesthetic and Visual Imagery Questionnaire (KVIQ), (ii) the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire-2 (VMIQ), and (iii) the Imagery Ability (IA) score. We then used Pearson's and Spearman's coefficients to correlate MI ability scores and average ERD power (avgERD). Positive correlations were identified between VMIQ and avgERD of the middle cingulum in the β band and with avgERD of the left insula, right precentral area, and right middle occipital region in the θ band. Stronger activation of the MI network was related to better scores of MI ability evaluations, supporting the importance of testing MI ability during MI protocols. This result will help to understand MI mechanisms and develop personalized MI treatments for patients with neurological dysfunctions.

Abstract
China has changed its focus from traditional high-speed economic growth to high-quality economic development (HQED) and the implementation of environmentally friendly practices. This transition can have parallel or unparallel impacts on energy insecurity (EIS). In this regards, HQED, inter Alia, is crucial in mitigating EIS and combating the energy crisis. Our study explores the impact of economic growth (EG) and HQED on EIS using the provincial panel data of China for the period 2011-2017. From the perspective of comparative analysis, the results reveal that HQED reduces EIS while EG increases it. The robustness checks indicate that industrial structure (IS) has a negative impact on EIS, whereas industrial structure upgrading (ISU) and green innovation (GI) have a positive influence. This implies that IS contributes to an increase in EIS, whereas ISU and GI result in a decrease in EIS. In addition, the analysis reveals that digital financial inclusion (DFI) exhibits a significant positive relation with EIS, albeit occasionally a negative but insignificant link. The policy implication is that the government should stimulate policies to promote HQED which reduces the EIS.

Abstract
Goniodorididae is a family of small dorid nudibranchs distributed worldwide that feed on entoprocts, ascidians, and bryozoans. The evolutionary relationships between its taxa have been uncertain due to the limited taxa available for phylogenetic analyses; some genera being paraphyletic. The family includes a remarkable number of synonymized genera in which the species richness is unequally distributed, while some genera have dozens of species others are monospecific. Some clades are very uniform morphologically while others are considered highly variable. To increase backbone phylogenetic resolution a target enrichment approach of ultra-conserved elements was aimed at representative Goniodorididae species for the first time. Additionally, we increase species representation by including mitochondrial markers cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and ribosomal RNA 16S as well as nuclear Histone 3 and ribosomal RNA 18S from 109 Goniodorididae species, out of approximately 160 currently valid species. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses were performed to infer the phylogeny of the family. As a result, two subfamilies and eleven genera were elucidated. The synonymized genera Bermudella, Cargoa, and Ceratodoris are here resurrected and a new genus, Naisdoris gen. nov., is described. The clades included taxa with shared prey preference, showing that trophic behavior could have driven species evolution and morphological uniqueness within the family Goniodorididae.

Abstract
Terrestrial gastropods have a lens-bearing eye on the tip of their tentacles. There are two morphologically distinct photoreceptors, called Type-I and Type-II photoreceptors, in the retina. Type-I photoreceptors are equipped with highly developed photoreceptive microvilli in their outer rhabdomeric segment, whereas Type-II photoreceptors have short and fewer microvilli. Although both types of photoreceptors send afferent projections directly to the brain, their destinations in the brain, called optic neuropiles, have not been sufficiently investigated. Our recent studies revealed that there are commissural fibers in the cerebral ganglia that transmit photic information acquired by bilateral eyes. Moreover, some of the retinal photoreceptors are connected by gap junctions to the photosensitive brain neurons, suggesting the functional interaction of the photic information between the eye and brain photoreceptors, as well as between bilateral eyes. However, it has not been clarified which type of retinal photoreceptors send commissural projections to the contralateral hemiganglion nor interact with the brain photoreceptors. In the present study, we demonstrated by molecular histological analyses and tracer injections that (1) Type-I and Type-II photoreceptors send glutamatergic afferent projections to the medial and lateral lobes of the ipsilateral optic neuropile, respectively, (2) direct synaptic interaction between bilateral optic nerves occurs in the medial lobe of the optic neuropile, and (3) brain photosensory neurons form gap junctions with the medial lobe of the contralateral optic neuropile. These results reveal an ordered pattern of afferent projections from the retina and provide insight into the different functional roles of retinal photoreceptors.

Abstract
Currently, people eat Undaria pinnatifida (UP) in a single way, and processing homogeneity is serious. However, UP has not gained any traction in the 3D printing industry to date. This study explored the incorporation of soy protein isolate (SPI), pea protein (PP), xanthan gum (XG), guar gum (GG), corn starch (CS), and potato starch (PS) into UP slurry liquid, the primary component of the study, to formulate a UP gel ink. The UP gel 3D printing ink system based on UP paste was established and characterized. The results show that hydrogen bonds are formed, and three-dimensional gel network structure is formed in all UP gel inks. UP gel inks containing high concentrations of SPI and GG exhibited good texture and rheological qualities and good 3D printing effect, with storage modulus (G') values of 8440.405 ± 3.893 and 8111.730 ± 3.585 Pa. The loss of modulus (G″) values were 1409.107 ± 3.524 and 1071.673 ± 3.669 Pa. Unfortunately, the properties of other UP gel inks are not suitable, resulting in poor 3D printing results. The food 3D printing method developed in this study provides valuable insights for expanding food 3D printing material choices and achieving high-value applications of UP.

Abstract
We argue that results produced by a heuristic optimisation algorithm cannot be considered reproducible unless the algorithm fully specifies what should be done with solutions generated outside the domain, even in the case of simple bound constraints. Currently, in the field of heuristic optimisation, such specification is rarely mentioned or investigated due to the assumed triviality or insignificance of this question. Here, we demonstrate that, at least in algorithms based on Differential Evolution, this choice induces notably different behaviours in terms of performance, disruptiveness, and population diversity. This is shown theoretically (where possible) for standard Differential Evolution in the absence of selection pressure and experimentally for the standard and state-of-the-art Differential Evolution variants, on a special test function and the BBOB benchmarking suite, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the importance of this choice quickly grows with problem dimensionality. Differential Evolution is not at all special in this regard-there is no reason to presume that other heuristic optimisers are not equally affected by the aforementioned algorithmic choice. Thus, we urge the heuristic optimisation community to formalise and adopt the idea of a new algorithmic component in heuristic optimisers, which we refer to as the strategy of dealing with infeasible solutions. This component needs to be consistently: (a) specified in algorithmic descriptions to guarantee reproducibility of results, (b) studied to better understand its impact on an algorithm's performance in a wider sense (i.e., convergence time, robustness, etc.), and (c) included in the (automatic) design of algorithms. All of these should be done even for problems with bound constraints.

Abstract
The producer of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), Alexandrium catenella, is one of the main generators of HABs in the coasts of Chile. Its presence produces ecological and economic damage, directly affecting filter-feeding organisms, and indirectly to other organism through the trophic chain. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of a toxic diet on the energetic and reproductive parameters of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Two groups of snails were used, one fed with toxic prey (bivalves fed with A. catenella), and the other fed with non-toxic prey. Both treatments were maintained under these conditions for 63 days, then, elemental composition (C, N) and energy content were estimated, and fecundity parameters were analyzed. The results indicate that snails fed with toxic prey had a lower percentage of C and C/N ratio. The energy content was significantly lower in intoxicated snails. Regarding fecundity parameters, a higher number of egg-masses were produced by toxic snails, however, only 62% of these showed embryonic development, with 57% hatching success. A negative relationship was identified between the mean PST concentration, quantified in snails, and the number of egg-masses produced per aquarium. In the aquarium where the snails had highest average PST concentration (1200 ± 820 μg STX.2HCL eq. Kg-1) there was no oviposition, while egg-masses were only produced by snails in aquaria where the average concentration did not exceed 360 ± 160 μg STX.2HCL eq. Kg-1. It is likely that, with low levels of accumulated PST, C. giganteus activates its oviposition process as a response to toxin-induced stress, generating a higher energy expenditure supported by a redirection of its reserves. However, when the intoxication presents higher levels, the reproductive process could be inhibited, similar to what has been identified in other molluscs.

The source of infection was consumption of Pila sp. snails, a finding confirmed morphologically and molecularly.

Abstract
Maintaining an accurate model of the world relies on our ability to update memory representations in light of new information. Previous research on the integration of new information into memory mainly focused on the hippocampus. Here, we hypothesized that the angular gyrus, known to be involved in episodic memory and imagination, plays a pivotal role in the insight-driven reconfiguration of memory representations. To test this hypothesis, participants received continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over the left angular gyrus or sham stimulation before gaining insight into the relationship between previously separate life-like animated events in a narrative-insight task. During this task, participants also underwent EEG recording and their memory for linked and non-linked events was assessed shortly thereafter. Our results show that cTBS to the angular gyrus decreased memory for the linking events and reduced the memory advantage for linked relative to non-linked events. At the neural level, cTBS targeting the angular gyrus reduced centro-temporal coupling with frontal regions and abolished insight-induced neural representational changes for events linked via imagination, indicating impaired memory reconfiguration. Further, the cTBS group showed representational changes for non-linked events that resembled the patterns observed in the sham group for the linked events, suggesting failed pruning of the narrative in memory. Together, our findings demonstrate a causal role of the left angular gyrus in insight-related memory reconfigurations.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) pollution in the marine environment has become a global problem. In this study, a number of 21 mollusk species (n = 2006) with different feeding habits were collected from 11 sites along the Bohai Sea for MPs uptake analysis. The MPs in mollusk samples were isolated and identified by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FTIR), and an assessment of the health risks of MPs ingested by mollusk consumption is also conducted. Approximately 91.9 % of the individuals among all the collected species inhaled MPs, and there was an average abundance of 3.30 ± 2.04 items·individual-1 or 1.04 ± 0.74 items·g-1 of wet weight. The shape of MPs was mainly fiber, and a total number of 8 polymers were detected, of which rayon had the highest detection rate (58.3 %). The highest abundance, uptake rate and polymer composition of MPs was observed in creeping types, suggesting that they might ingest these MPs from their food. The gastropod Siphonalia subdilatata contains the highest levels of MPs, which may increase the risk of human exposure if consumed whole without removing the digestive gland. The polymer risk level of MPs in these mollusks was Level III (H = 299), presenting harmful MPs such as polyvinyl chloride. In terms of human exposure risk, the average risk of human exposure to MPs through consumption of Bohai mollusks is estimated to be 3399 items·(capita·year)-1 (424-9349 items·(capita·year)-1). Overall, this study provides a basis for the ecological and health Risk assessment of MPs in mollusks collected from the coastline of China.

Neurostimulation of the hippocampal formation has shown promising results for modulating memory but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In particular, the effects on hippocampal theta-nested gamma oscillations and theta phase reset, which are both crucial for memory processes, are unknown. Moreover, these effects cannot be investigated using current computational models, which consider theta oscillations with a fixed amplitude and phase velocity. Here, we developed a novel computational model that includes the medial septum, represented as a set of abstract Kuramoto oscillators producing a dynamical theta rhythm with phase reset, and the hippocampal formation, composed of biophysically realistic neurons and able to generate theta-nested gamma oscillations under theta drive. We showed that, for theta inputs just below the threshold to induce self-sustained theta-nested gamma oscillations, a single stimulation pulse could switch the network behavior from non-oscillatory to a state producing sustained oscillations. Next, we demonstrated that, for a weaker theta input, pulse train stimulation at the theta frequency could transiently restore seemingly physiological oscillations. Importantly, the presence of phase reset influenced whether these two effects depended on the phase at which stimulation onset was delivered, which has practical implications for designing neurostimulation protocols that are triggered by the phase of ongoing theta oscillations. This novel model opens new avenues for studying the effects of neurostimulation on the hippocampal formation. Furthermore, our hybrid approach that combines different levels of abstraction could be extended in future work to other neural circuits that produce dynamical brain rhythms.

Abstract
Intertidal rocky shores are the most accessible marine habitats and therefore heavily impacted by harvesting. In recent years, they have also been increasingly invaded by alien species, which compounds the effects of harvesting on rocky shore community composition and functioning. Recent survey data, combined with historical data from 1970, were used to assess temporal changes over the intervening period in rocky shore communities at two sites (Wireless Point and Wireless Island). Three kinds of changes emerged: (1) the appearance of alien species; (2) the effects of increased harvesting pressure; and (3) the direct and indirect effects of these changes on other species. A striking result was transformation of mid-shore zones on exposed shores by the appearance of the invasive Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, and the indirect effects of this on the demography and vertical zonation patterns of the granular limpet Scutellastra granularis. Adult limpets have become excluded by the mussel, whereas juveniles find a secondary home on the shells of the mussel and their abundance has increased. To further disentangle the effects of harvesting from those of alien invasions, a spatial comparison was made between two currently unharvested no-take sites (Scarborough South and Scarborough North) and two regularly harvested sites (Kommetjie and Wireless Point). Harvesting has substantially depleted the granite limpet Cymbula granatina and Argenville's limpet Scutellastra argenvillei. This has led to the proliferation of opportunistic seaweeds, such as Ulva spp. The dual effects of alien invasive species and over-harvesting have major ecosystem effects but do not necessarily diminish biodiversity because the alternative habitats that have developed provide opportunities for colonisation by additional species.

Abstract
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are widely recognized as a promising technology for mitigating climate change. CO2 mineralization using Ca-rich fluids and high-concentration CO2 gas has been studied extensively. However, few studies have reported CO2 mineralization with atmospheric CO2, owing to the difficulty associated with its low concentration. In seawater, the biomineralization process promotes Ca accumulation and CaCO3 precipitation, assisted by specific organic matter. In this study, we examined the conversion of atmospheric CO2 into CaCO3 in seawater using shell powders (Pinctada fucata, Haliotis discus, Crassostrea gigas, Mizuhopecten yessoensis, Turbo sazae, and Saxidomus purpurata). Among the six species, the shell powder of S. purpurata showed the highest rate of CaCO3 formation and recovery of CaCO3. NaClO treatment test revealed that the organic matter in the shells enhanced the CO2 mineralization. All materials used in this study, including atmospheric CO2, seawater, and shells, are economically feasible for large-scale applications. Using shell powder for CO2 mineralization in seawater embodies an innovative technological advancement to address climate change.

Abstract
The discovery of nucleic acids stands as a paramount achievement in the history of scientific endeavors. By applying transformative advancements in the fields of chemistry and physics to biological systems, researchers unveiled the enigmatic nature of life. Notably, messenger RNA (mRNA) emerged as a crucial player in this profound revelation, serving as a transient intermediary for genetic information transfer between genes and proteins. Groundbreaking investigations carried out from 1944 to 1961 led to the initial identification of this pivotal molecule, captivating scientific interest for the past three decades. The field of mRNA research has witnessed a transformative shift owing to the development of cap analogs and nucleotide modifications. This revolutionary progress has fostered a new generation of potent therapeutics. Prior to the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, numerous scientists had already begun exploring the unique properties of mRNA. Abstract
In order to analyze the differences between the master curves of relaxation modulus E(t) and creep compliance J(t) obtained from discrete and continuous spectrum models, and to comprehensively evaluate the effect of basalt fiber content on the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mixtures, complex modulus tests were conducted for asphalt mixtures with fiber content of 0%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively. Consequently, the master curves of Viscoelastic Parameters of asphalt mixtures were constructed according to the generalized Sigmoidal model(GSM) and the approximate Kramers-Kronig (K-K) relationship. Then, transformation of master curves using discrete and continuous spectrum models to obtain the models of E(t) and J(t) containing all viscoelastic information. Also, the accuracy of the models of E(t) and J(t) was evaluated. The results show that the addition of basalt fibers improves the strength, stress relaxation and deformation resistance of asphalt mixtures. It is worth noting that basalt fibers achieve the improvement of asphalt mixtures by changing their internal structure. Considering the different viscoelastic master curves at four dosages, the optimum fiber dosage was 0.2%. In addition, both discrete and continuous model conversion methods can obtain high accuracy conversion results.

Abstract
Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) is the main pathogenic bacteria in seafood that can cause serious food-borne illness. The annual incidence of V. parahaemolyticus infection in the United States exceeds 45,000 cases, indicating there are potential shortcomings in seafood sterilization techniques. Meanwhile, the ongoing emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains highlights the urgent need for novel bacteriostatic strategies to eliminate V. parahaemolyticus. Nano-BiPO4 is a semiconductor with high H2O2 production efficiency and has potential for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation. But the effectiveness and mechanism of BiPO4 photocatalytic inactivation of V. parahaemolyticus has not been reported. In this study, nano-BiPO4 synthesized in pure water (P1) was found to exhibit optimal H2O2 production efficiency (1203 μmol h-1g-1) and antibacterial activity (in 0.8 g/L). Under UV light irradiation, P1 induced alterations in bacterial cell morphology, elevation in intracellular levels of ROS, H2O2, O2-, GSSG and MDA, and reduction in GSH level. Meanwhile, metabolomic analysis revealed that P1 stimulates the arginine biosynthesis, TCA cycle and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism. These abnormal changes in the oxidative stress indicators and metabolic pathways proved that the bacterial damage was related to the H2O2 produced by nano-BiPO4 photocatalysis. Moreover, sliced abalone and hemolysis assay were used to demonstrate the applicability and biosafety of P1. This study provides theoretical support for exploring nano-BiPO4 as a bacterial inhibitor against V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Slugs mechanically damage plant leaves, resulting in significant economic losses. However, there are limited cost-efficient strategies available in slug management. By studying how slugs utilize plant volatiles to locate host plants, we can gain insights into the design of attractants and repellents. RESULTS Bioassay results suggest slugs (Agriolimax agrestis) prefer to orientate to lettuce (Lactuca sativa), cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.), and young tobacco seedlings, compared with old tobacco seedlings. We analyzed the volatomics of lettuce, cabbage, young and old tobacco seedlings. 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)-ethanol acetate (2EA) had high abundance while nonanal, decanal, and β-cylocitral had relatively low content in volatiles. Old tobacco seedlings released significantly more hexanal but fewer 1,4-dihydro-4-oxopyridazine (DO). In olfactory tests, hexanal, nonanal, decanal, and β-cylocitral showed strong repellency to slugs, while DO at a dose of 500 ng/μL and 2EA at a dose of 1% were attractive to slugs. The two alkanes, hexadecane and heptadecane, had no effect on slug orientating to host plants. DO and 2EA can thus alleviate the repellency of hexanal, nonanal, decanal and β-cylocitral. CONCLUSION The high emission of hexanal in old tobacco seedlings helps repel slugs, while 2EA and DO attract slugs to lettuce and cabbage. These findings suggest that these chemicals can be utilized in the design of repellents and attractants, and contribute to constructing a push-pull system for slug control. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The chemotaxis responses of soil nematodes have been well studied in bacteriophagic nematodes, plant-parasitic nematodes, entomopathogenic nematodes, and to a lesser extent malacopathogenic nematodes. Free-living stages of parasitic nematodes often use chemotaxis to locate hosts. In this study, we compared the chemotaxis profile of 2 slug-associated nematodes with overlapping host ranges. Phasmarhabditis californica is a facultative parasite that has been shown to express strain-dependent variation in chemoattraction profile. We tested 4 slug species to determine the attraction index of a Canadian strain of Ph. californica and a sympatric necromenic nematode, Pristionchus entomophagus. When tested against a control (distilled water), Ph. californica showed a clear (positive) attraction towards the mucus of slugs Ambigolimax valentianus, Arion rufus, and Arion fasciatus, but not Deroceras reticulatum. However, when given a choice between the mucus of D. reticulatum and Ar. fasciatus in a pairwise test, Ph. californica was strongly attracted to the former. Other pairwise comparisons did not reveal a clear preference for either slug species in the following pairs: D. reticulatum-Ar. rufus, Am. valentianus-Ar. rufus, D. reticulatum-Am. valentianus. The chemotaxis assay for Pr. entomophagus showed an attraction toward D. reticulatum and Ar. fasciatus (tested against controls); the attraction index for Am. valentianus was positive, but this was not statistically significant. In contrast, the attraction index for Ar. rufus was negative, suggesting possible repulsion to the mucus of this slug species. Given that Pr. entomophagus and Ph. californica occupy overlapping habitats, utilize similar hosts, and exhibit similar chemotaxis profiles, there is a potential for direct interaction between these 2 nematodes. Like other members of the genus Pristionchus, Pr. entomophagus may be able to prey upon the co-occurring Ph. californica, such antagonistic interactions could have important implications for the coexistence of these 2 species and Ph. californica in particular as a biocontrol agent against pestiferous slugs.

Gastropoda are an exceptionally successful group with a rich and diverse fossil record. They have conquered land and freshwater habitats multiple times independently and have dispersed across the entire globe. Since they are important constituents of fossil assemblages, they are often used for palaeoecological reconstruction, biostratigraphic correlations, and as model groups to study morphological and taxonomic evolution. While marine faunas and their evolution have been a common subject of study, the freshwater component of the fossil record has attracted much less attention, and a global overview is lacking. Here, I review the fossil record of freshwater gastropods on a global scale, ranging from their origins in the late Palaeozoic to the Pleistocene. As compiled here, the global fossil record of freshwater Gastropoda includes 5182 species in 490 genera, 44 families, and 12 superfamilies over a total of ~340 million years. Following a slow and poorly known start in the late Palaeozoic, diversity slowly increased during the Mesozoic. Diversity culminated in an all-time high in the Neogene, relating to diversification in numerous long-lived (ancient) lakes in Europe. I summarise well-documented and hypothesised freshwater colonisation events and compare the patterns found in freshwater gastropods to those in land snails. Furthermore, I discuss potential preservation and sampling biases, as well as the main drivers underlying species diversification in fresh water on a larger scale. In that context, I particularly highlight the importance of long-lived lakes as islands and archives of evolution and expand a well-known concept in ecology and evolution to a broader spectrum: scale-independent ecological opportunity.
