Exploring BPA alternatives - Environmental levels and toxicity review

Bisphenol A alternatives are manufactured as potentially less harmful substitutes of bisphenol A (BPA) that offer similar functionality. These alternatives are already in the market, entering the environment and thus raising ecological concerns. However, it can be expected that levels of BPA alternatives will dominate in the future, they are limited information on their environmental safety. The EU PARC project highlights BPA alternatives as priority chemicals and consolidates information on BPA alternatives, with a focus on environmental relevance and on the identification of the research gaps. The review highlighted aspects and future perspectives. In brief, an extension of environmental monitoring is crucial, extending it to cover BPA alternatives to track their levels and facilitate the timely implementation of mitigation measures. The biological activity has been studied for BPA alternatives, but in a non-systematic way and prioritized a limited number of chemicals. For several BPA alternatives, the data has already provided substantial evidence regarding their potential harm to the environment. We stress the importance of conducting more comprehensive assessments that go beyond the traditional reproductive studies and focus on overlooked relevant endpoints. Future research should also consider mixture effects, realistic environmental concentrations, and the long-term consequences on biota and ecosystems.

Can BPA Analogs Affect Cellular and Biochemical Responses in the Microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin?

Bisphenol A analogs (BPA analogs) are emerging contaminants with a rising production caused by the replacement of BPA with these compounds. The increased production of BPA analogs is leading to their increased release into various ecosystems, including marine ones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological effects of BPA analogs on a primary producer, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin. Three different BPA analogs (BPAF, BPF, and BPS) and their mixture were tested at the environmental relevant concentration of 300 ng/L. Growth, cell size and several biomarkers of oxidative stress and oxidative damage were measured. Our results indicated that the tested compounds caused a reduced growth rate and induced oxidative stress, altering many antioxidant enzymes in P. tricornutum. However, no oxidative damages were observed.

An overview of the occurrence, fate, and human risks of the bisphenol-A present in plastic materials, components, and products

With over 95% of bisphenol-A (BPA) used in the production of polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resins, termed here as BPA-based plastic materials, components, and products (MCPs), an investigation of human exposure to BPA over the whole lifecycle of BPA-based plastic MCPs is necessary. This mini-review unpacks the implications arising from the long-term human exposure to BPA and its potential accumulation across the lifecycle of BPA-based plastics (production, use, and management). This investigation is timely and necessary in promoting a sustainable circular economy model. Restrictions of BPA in the form of bans and safety standards are often specific to products, while safety limits rely on traditional toxicological and biomonitoring methods that may underestimate human health implications and therefore the "safety" of BPA exposure. Controversies in regards to the: (a) dose-response curves; (b) the complexity of sources, release mechanisms, and pathways of exposure; and/or (c) the quality and reliability of toxicological studies, appear to currently stifle progress toward the regulation of BPA-based plastic MCPs. Due to the abundance of BPA in our MCPs production, consumption, and management systems, there is partial and inadequate evidence on the contribution of BPA-based plastic MCPs to human exposure to BPA. Yet, the production, use, and end-of-life management of plastic MCPs constitute the most critical BPA source and potential exposure pathways that require further investigation. Active collaboration among risk assessors, government, policy-makers, and researchers is needed to explore the impacts of BPA in the long term and introduce restrictions to BPA-based MCPs. Acute and Chronic Toxicity of Binary Mixtures of Bisphenol A and Heavy Metals

Bisphenol A (BPA) and heavy metals are widespread contaminants in the environment. However, the combined toxicities of these contaminants are still unknown. In this study, the bioluminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67 was used to detect the single and combined toxicities of BPA and heavy metals, then the joint effects of these contaminants were evaluated. The results show that chronic toxicities of chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and BPA were time−dependent; in fact, the acute toxicities of these contaminants were stronger than the chronic toxicities. Furthermore, the combined toxicities of BPA and heavy metals displayed BPA + Hg > BPA + Cr > BPA + As > BPA + Ni > BPA + Pb > BPA + Cd in the acute test and BPA + Hg > BPA + Cd > BPA + As > BPA + Cd in the chronic test, which suggested that the combined toxicity of BPA and Hg was stronger than that of other mixtures in acute as well as chronic tests. Additionally, both CA and IA models underestimated the toxicities of mixtures at low concentrations but overestimated them at high concentrations, which indicates that CA and IA models were not suitable to predict the toxicities of mixtures of BPA and heavy metals. Moreover, the joint effects of BPA and heavy metals mainly showed antagonism and additive in the context of acute exposure but synergism and additive in the context of chronic exposure. Indeed, the difference in the joint effects on acute and chronic exposure can be explained by the possibility that mixtures inhibited cell growth and luminescence in chronic cultivation. The chronic toxicity of the mixture should be considered if the mixture results in the inhibition of the growth of cells.

How to Build a Microplastics-Free Environment: Strategies for Microplastics Degradation and Plastics Recycling

Microplastics are an emergent yet critical issue for the environment because of high degradation resistance and bioaccumulation. Unfortunately, the current technologies to remove, recycle, or degrade microplastics are insufficient for complete elimination. In addition, the fragmentation and degradation of mismanaged plastic wastes in environment have recently been identified as a significant source of microplastics. Thus, the developments of effective microplastics removal methods, as well as, plastics recycling strategies are crucial to build a microplastics-free environment. Herein, this review comprehensively summarizes the current technologies for eliminating microplastics from the environment and highlights two key aspects to achieve this goal: 1) Catalytic degradation of microplastics into environmentally friendly organics (carbon dioxide and water); 2) catalytic recycling and upcycling plastic wastes into monomers, fuels, and valorized chemicals. The mechanisms, catalysts, feasibility, and challenges of these methods are also discussed. Novel catalytic methods such as, photocatalysis, advanced oxidation process, and biotechnology are promising and eco-friendly candidates to transform microplastics and plastic wastes into environmentally benign and valuable products. In the future, more effort is encouraged to develop eco-friendly methods for the catalytic conversion of plastics into valuable products with high efficiency, high product selectivity, and low cost under mild conditions.

The effects of copper ions and copper nanomaterials on the output of amino acids from marine microalgae

In this study, the marine microalgae Skeletonema costatum and Nitzschia closterium were exposed to different forms of copper, such as a metal salt (Cu²⁺), a nano-metal (nano-Cu), and nano-metal oxide (nano-CuO). During a 96-h exposure to nanoparticles (NPs) and salt, the cell number, Cu²⁺ concentration in the culture medium, morphology, and intracellular amino acids were measured to assess the toxicity of the copper materials and the toxicity mechanism of the NPs. As results, the toxicity of Cu²⁺, nano-Cu, and nano-CuO to marine phytoplankton decreased in order. The EC₅₀ values of Cu²⁺ and nano-Cu for S. costatum and N. closterium ranged from 0.356 to 0.991 mg/L and 0.663 to 2.455 mg/L, respectively. Nano-Cu inhibits the growth of marine phytoplankton by releasing Cu²⁺; however, nano-CuO is harmful to microalgae because of the effect of NPs. The secretion of extracellular polymeric substances by microalgae could also affect the toxicity of nano-Cu and nano-CuO to microalgae. S. costatum was more sensitive to copper than N. closterium. Cu²⁺, nano-Cu, and nano-CuO all reduced per-cell amino acids and the total output of algae-derived amino acids by affecting the growth of the phytoplankton. This study helps to understand the risk assessment of nano-Cu and nano-CuO to marine microalgae.

Temperature influences the content and biosynthesis gene expression of saxitoxins (STXs) in the toxigenic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum

Temperature may affect the production of saxitoxin (STX) and its derivatives (STXs); however, this is still controversial. Further, STX-biosynthesis gene regulation and the relation of its toxicity with temperature are not clearly understood. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of different temperatures (12 °C, 16 °C, and 20 °C) on the growth, toxin profiles, and expression of two core STX-biosynthesis genes, sxtA and sxtG, in the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum Alex05, isolated from Korean coasts. We found that temperature significantly affected cell growth, with maximum growth recorded at 16 °C, followed by 20 °C and 12 °C. HPLC analysis revealed mostly 12 of STXs from the tested cultures. Interestingly, the contents of STXs increased in the cells cultured at 16 °C and exposed to cold stress, compared to the 20 °C culture and heat stress; however, toxin components were much more diverse under heat stress. These toxin profiles generally matched with the sxtA and sxtG expression levels. Incubation at lower temperatures (12 °C and 16 °C) and exposure to cold stress increased sxtA and sxtG expressions in the cells, whereas heat stress showed little change or downregulated the transcription of both genes. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed low correlation between STXs eq and expressional levels of sxtA and sxtG in heat-stressed cells. These results suggest that temperature might be a crucial factor affecting the level and biosynthesis of STXs in marine toxic dinoflagellates.

Effects of nanoplastics on microalgae and their trophic transfer along the food chain: recent advances and perspectives

Nanoplastics (NPs) have drawn increasing attention in recent years due to their potential threats to aquatic ecosystems. Microalgae are primary producers, which play important roles in the normal functioning of ecosystems. According to the source of production and laboratory experiments, both NPs and microalgae are likely to be widely found in various water environments, so they have a great chance of interacting with each other. Although tremendous efforts have been made to explore these potential interactions, a timely and critical review is still missing. In this paper, the effects of NPs on microalgae and their trophic transfer along the food chain are summarized. The toxic impact of NPs on microalgae is tightly associated with the concentrations, sizes and surface charge of NPs, as well as the microalgal species. In addition, NPs could also interact with many other contaminants, thus leading to combined effects on microalgae. NP exposure might block substance and energy exchange between microalgae and their surrounding environment, lead to a shading effect on microalgae, promote the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or induce direct physical damage on microalgae, thereby inhibiting the growth of microalgae. Moreover, NPs could also be trophically transferred along the food chain through microalgae and subsequently affect the species at a higher trophic level. Yet importantly, current understanding of the interactions between NPs and microalgae is still quite limited, and needs to be further studied.

Transient effect of bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on the cosmopolitan marine diatom Chaetoceros decipiens-lorenzianus

Incubation under controlled laboratory conditions were performed to assess the toxic effects of two plastic derived chemicals, bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), on the growth, photosynthetic efficiency and photosynthetic activity of the cosmopolitan diatom Chaetoceros decipiens-lorenzianus. Non-axenic diatom cells were exposed to concentrations of BPA and DEHP (separately and in mixture), mimicking concentrations observed in contaminated marine ecosystems, for seven days. Upon short-term exposure (i.e., during the first 48 h), BPA and DEHP induced a slight but significant stimulation of biomass and photosynthetic activity relative to the control, whereas, no significant impact was observed on the photosynthetic efficiency. Nevertheless, this pattern was transient. The stimulation was followed by a return to control conditions for all treatments at the end of incubation. These results showed that the cosmopolitan diatom Chaetoceros was not impacted by representative in situ concentrations of plastic derivatives, thus confirming its ability to thrive in coastal anthropogenic environments.

Contaminant occurrence, mobility and ecological risk assessment of phthalate esters in the sediment-water system of the Hangzhou Bay

The pollution characteristics, spatiotemporal variation, sediment-water partitioning, and potential ecological risk assessment of phthalate esters (PAEs) in the sediment-seawater system of the Hangzhou Bay (HZB) in summer and autumn were researched. The sum of the concentrations of the 10 PAEs in seawater ranges from 7305 ng/L to 22,861 ng/L in summer and from 8100 ng/L to 33,329 ng/L in autumn, with mean values of 15,567 ± 4390 and 17,884 ± 6850 ng/L, respectively. The Σ_16PAEs in the sediments are between 118 and 5888 μg/kg and 145 and 4746 μg/kg in summer and autumn, respectively. The level of PAEs in seawater varies with the seasons, but it is relatively stable in the sediments. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) are the predominant PAE congeners in the HZB. The DnBP and DiBP concentrations in seawater are greater than the DEHP concentration, which is the opposite in the sediments. The sediment-seawater equilibrium distribution study indicates that the PAEs with medium molecular weights, such as DiBP, butyl benzyl phthalate, and DnBP, are near dynamic equilibrium in the sediment-seawater system; PAEs with high molecular weights (e.g., di-n-octyl phthalate and DEHP) tend to transfer from water to the sediments; and PAEs with low molecular weights (e.g., dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, and diamyl phthalate) tend to spread to seawater. The risk assessment results in seawater indicate that DEHP and DiBP might pose high potential risks to sensitive organisms, and DnBP might exhibit medium ecological risks. In the sediment, DiBP might display a high potential risk to fish, and the potential risk of DEHP is high in several sites.

Oxidative stress responses caused by dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) in a marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

A marine diatom (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) was exposed to different concentrations of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) for 96 h within a batch-culture system to investigate their toxicities. Results showed that P. tricornutum could remove DMP and DEP effectively with removal rates of 0.20-0.30 and 0.14-0.21 mg L^-1 h^-1, respectively. In addition, DMP and DEP significantly inhibited the photosynthesis and chlorophyll a biosynthesis of P. tricornutum with 96-h EC₅₀ values of 390.5 mg L^-1 and 74.0 mg L^-1, respectively. Results of reactive oxygen species (ROS) level suggested that the two PAEs could induce excessive ROS production in the diatom. Moreover, activities of antioxidant enzymes (i.e., SOD and POD) in the diatom increased with the increase of DMP and DEP concentrations. The results will help to understand the toxic mechanisms of PAEs, and provide strong evidences for evaluating their ecological risks in the marine environment.

The effects of bisphenol A, F and their mixture on algal and cyanobacterial growth: from additivity to antagonism

Bisphenol A (BPA) is, due to its widespread use including the production of plastic materials, an ubiquitous pollutant in the aquatic environment. Due to evidence of adverse BPA effects on the environment and human health, its use has been restricted and replaced by analogues such as bisphenol F (BPF). This study examined the toxicity of BPA, BPF and their mixture towards primary producers, the eukaryotic green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the prokaryotic cyanobacterium Synechococcus leopoliensis. The results demonstrated that S. leopoliensis is more sensitive than P. subcapitata, whereas toxic potential of the two BPs is comparable and represents comparable hazard for phytoplankton. The toxicity of the binary mixture was predicted by different models (concentration addition, independent action, combination index and the isobologram method) and compared to experimental data. Additive effect was observed in P. subcapitata over the whole effect concentration range (EC₅-EC₉₀), whereas in S. leopoliensis, no pronounced combined effect was observed. The environmental risk characterisation based on the comparison of reported concentrations of BPA and BPF in surface waters to the predicted no-effect concentration values obtained in this study showed that at certain industrial areas, BPA represents environmental risk, whereas BPF does not. However, BPF concentrations in aquatic environment are expected to increase in the future. To enable environmental risk assessment of BP analogues, more data on the toxicity to aquatic species, including combined effect, as well as data on their occurrence in the aquatic environment are needed.Graphical abstract.

Microplastic accumulation in the gastrointestinal tracts in birds of prey in central Florida, USA

A study was conducted to quantify the abundance of plastic pollution in the gastrointestinal tracts in birds of prey. Data was collected from all birds retrieved from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in central Florida, USA from January to May 2018. Individuals were either dead prior to reaching the Center or died within 24 h of arrival with no food consumed during captivity. Sixty-three individuals representing eight species were dissected to extract the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the esophagus to the large intestine. Microplastics were found in the GI tracts in all examined species and in all individual birds. The overall mean number (±S.E.) of microplastics for species of bird of prey in central Florida was 11.9 (±2.8), and the overall mean number of microplastics per gram of GI tract tissue was 0.3 (±0.1). A total of 1197 pieces of plastic were recorded. Microfibers accounted for 86% of total plastics followed by microfragments (13%), macroplastics (0.7%) and microbeads (0.3%). Most fibers were either clear or royal blue in color. Micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) found that processed cellulose was the most common polymer identified in birds (37%), followed by polyethylene terephthalate (16%) and a polymer blend (4:1) of polyamide-6 and poly(ethylene-co-polypropylene) (11%). Two bird species, Buteo lineatus (red-shouldered hawk, n = 28) and Pandion haliaetus (osprey, n = 16), were sufficiently abundant to enable statistical analyses. Microplastics were significantly more abundant per gram in the gastrointestinal tract tissue of B. lineatus, that consumes small mammals, snakes, and amphibians, than in fish-feeding P. haliaetus (ANOVA: p = 0.013). If raptors in terrestrial food webs have higher densities of microplastics than aquatic top predators, then it potentially could be due to a combination of direct intake of plastics and indirect consumption via trophic transfer.

Microplastics in aquatic environments: Toxicity to trigger ecological consequences

The prevalence of microplastic debris in aquatic ecosystems as a result of anthropogenic activity has received worldwide attention. Although extensive research has reported ubiquitous and directly adverse effects on organisms, only a few published studies have proposed the long-term ecological consequences. The research in this field still lacks a systematic overview of the toxic effects of microplastics and a coherent understanding of the potential ecological consequences. Here, we draw upon cross-disciplinary scientific research from recent decades to 1) seek to understand the correlation between the responses of organisms to microplastics and the potential ecological disturbances, 2) summarize the potential ecological consequences triggered by microplastics in aquatic environments, and 3) discuss the barriers to the understanding of microplastic toxicology. In this paper, the physiochemical characteristics and dynamic distribution of microplastics were related to the toxicological concerns about microplastic bioavailability and environmental perturbation. The extent of the ecological disturbances depends on how the ecotoxicity of microplastics is transferred and proliferated throughout an aquatic environment. Microplastics are prevalent; they interfere with nutrient productivity and cycling, cause physiological stress in organisms (e.g., behavioral alterations, immune responses, abnormal metabolism, and changes to energy budgets), and threaten the ecosystem composition and stability. By integrating the linkages among the toxicities that range from the erosion of individual species to the defective development of biological communities to the collapse of the ecosystem functioning, this review provides a bottom-up framework for future research to address the mechanisms underlying the toxicity of microplastics in aquatic environments and the substantial ecological consequences.

Environmentally relevant bisphenol A concentrations effects on the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa different parts elongation: perceptive assessors of toxicity

Toxicity data on bisphenol A (BPA) effects on aquatic macrophytes remain scarce. Therefore, environmentally relevant BPA concentrations (0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1, and 3 μg L^-1) were tested on the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa different parts length increase. All plant parts, at low BPA concentrations (0.03-0.3 μg L^-1), elongated equally to the control, while their lengthening and elongation rates gradually decreased by increasing BPA concentrations. A gradual increase of "Toxicity index" with increasing BPA concentrations was observed but was lower for juvenile blades and higher for plagiotropic rhizomes and adult leaves. In all parts, the LOECs were 0.3 and the NOECs 0.1 μg L^-1 at 10th day. Juvenile blades displayed, under acute stress, lengthening inhibition at lower concentrations than the rhizomes and adult blades, but at a lower extent. The EC₅₀ values were lower for the rhizome internodes, followed by the adult blades and higher for the juvenile blades. Using as a biological "endpoint" the elongation, all C. nodosa parts and specifically the rhizomes and adult blades, followed by intermediate blades, adult sheaths, and juvenile blades, seemed to be sensitive BPA toxicity assessors. The evaluation of the relative sensitivity of the different parts to BPA toxicity could help identify the most suitable seagrass part for early diagnosis of the risk posed by BPA to seagrass meadows and could constitute a valuable tool to derive the seawater quality criteria and to be used in BPA monitoring programs for rational management of the coastal environment.

Combined effect of polystyrene microplastics and dibutyl phthalate on the microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The combined effect of polystyrene microplastics (mPS) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a common plastic additive, on the microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa was investigated in the present study. The 96 h-IC₅₀ value of DBP was 2.41 mg L^-1. Polystyrene microplastics exhibited size-dependent inhibitory effect to C. pyrenoidosa, with the 96 h-IC₅₀ at 6.90 and 7.19 mg L^-1 for 0.1 and 0.55 μm mPS respectively, but little toxicity was observed for 5 μm mPS. The interaction parameter ρ based on the response additive response surface (RARS) model varied from -0.309 to 5.845, indicating the interaction pattern varying with exposure concentrations of chemical mixtures. A modified RARS model (taking ρ as a function of exposure concentration) was constructed and could well predict the combined toxicity of mPS and DBP. More than 20% reduction of DBP was observed at 20 mg L^-1 mPS, while 1 mg L^-1 mPS had no significant effect on the bioavailability of DBP at different sampling time points. Volume, morphological complexity and chlorophyll fluorescence intensity of microalgal cells were disturbed by both DBP and mPS. The antagonistic effect of high concentrations of mPS might be partially attributed to the combination of hetero- and homo-aggregation and the reduced bioavailability of DBP. The overall findings of the present study profiled the combined toxic effects of mPS and DBP on marine phytoplankton species which will be helpful for further evaluation of ecological risks of mPS and DBP in marine environment.

Consequences of a contaminant mixture of bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), two plastic-derived chemicals, on the diversity of coastal phytoplankton

To assess the impact of two plastic derived chemicals: bisphenol A (BPA) and the di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), on phytoplankton biomass and community structure, microcosm incubations were performed during spring and summer, with offshore and lagoon waters of a south-western Mediterranean ecosystem. Phytoplankton were exposed to an artificial mixture of BPA and DEHP and to marine water previously enriched with plastic-derivative compounds, originated from in situ water incubations of plastic debris for 30 days. After 96 h of incubation, changes were observed in phytoplankton biomass in the contaminated microcosms, with a net decrease (up to 50% of the control) in the concentration of Chlorophyll a in offshore waters. Concomitantly, plastic-derivative contamination provoked structural changes, especially for offshore waters. This suggests a relative tolerance of the lagoon communities to BPA and DEHP contamination, related to the dominance of Chaetoceros spp., which could potentially be used as a bioindicator in bioassessment studies.

UV-B radiation induces DEHP degradation and their combined toxicological effects on Scenedesmus acuminatus

The co-contamination discharge of Phthalate esters (PAEs) by human activities and the increased UV radiation is increasing in aquatic ecosystems. However, little information is available about the combined detrimental effects of UV and PAEs on phytoplankton. In this study, the combined effects of UV-B irradiation and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on photosynthesis and antioxidant system of Scenedesmus acuminatus, and the DEHP degradation were investigated. Results showed that UV-B radiation decreased the chlorophyll a fluorescence yield, photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm), pigment content and superoxide dismutase activity. This radiation also increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and soluble protein and malondialdehyde contents. UV-B radiation with 10 mg L^-1 DEHP improved the Fv/Fm and alleviated the cell damage of S. acuminatus, and the addition of high DEHP concentration (≥50 mg L^-1) aggravated cell damage. The ROS generation also decreased with the increased DEHP concentration. UV-B radiation can effectively promote the DEHP degradation, with the highest degradation rate of 89.9% at an initial DEHP concentration of 10 mg L^-1 within 6 h. This result may be attributed to that UV-B irradiance induced DEHP degradation under the regulation of ROS generated by S. acuminatus. Our findings will contribute to the understanding of the combined toxic mechanisms of UV-B and DEHP and in the evaluation of ecological environment risks for primary producers in aquatic ecosystems.

Distribution of Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Aquatic Ecosystems and Their Impacts on Aquatic Organisms, with Emphasis on Microalgae

Plastics, with their many useful physical and chemical properties, are widely used in various industries and activities of daily living. Yet, the insidious effects of plastics, particularly long-term effects on aquatic organisms, are not properly understood. Plastics have been shown to degrade to micro- and nanosize particles known as microplastics and nanoplastics, respectively. These minute particles have been shown to cause various adverse effects on aquatic organisms, ranging from growth inhibition, developmental delay and altered feeding behaviour in aquatic animals to decrease of photosynthetic efficiency and induction of oxidative stress in microalgae. This review paper covers the distribution of microplastics and nanoplastics in aquatic ecosystems, focusing on their effects on microalgae as well as co-toxicity of microplastics and nanoplastics with other pollutants. Besides that, this review paper also discusses future research directions which could be taken to gain a better understanding of the impacts of microplastics and nanoplastics on aquatic ecosystems.
