Abstract
Synergizing nanomaterial technology with advanced 3D printing techniques creates new opportunities for developing smart, stimuli-responsive materials suitable for tissue engineering scaffolds. By incorporation of stimuli-responsive nanoparticles into extracellular matrix mimetics, these composites gain functional elements capable of replicating dynamic biological processes in vitro. Herein, we propose combining hybrid multifunctional inorganic-organic materials with the emerging volumetric bioprinting (VBP) technique. We present two hybrid materials, a light stimuli-responsive polymer-based resin and a biocompatible porcine-derived decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM)-based bioresin, thus expanding the library of materials suitable for VBP. Plasmonic nanoparticles are combined with a thermoresponsive polymeric matrix, formulating the stimuli-responsive plasmonic resin, while a dECM-based bioresin with embedded smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is employed to include the biological component in the system. As proof of concept to demonstrate the versatility of the hybrid materials, we investigated the generation of highly complex structures, including multiwalled channels, using sequential VBP. Overall, this study broadens the range of materials compatible with VBP, thereby enabling the use of smart multicomponent materials in the fabrication of dynamic, stimuli-responsive 3D in vitro models.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) food printing is a cutting-edge technology that allows the creation of shape-shifting transformative food structures. This innovative approach to food design enables food scientists to craft edible creations that change form and texture over time, thereby providing a unique and dynamic dining experience. Beyond its novelty and aesthetic appeal, 4D food printing has practical applications that address pressing issues in the food industry. In this review, we explore the technology behind 4D food printing, food ink types, and other natural ingredients that can be programed to change shape with stimuli, and the possibilities and potential applications of 4D food printing, from tantalizing taste sensations to revolutionary solutions for food sustainability, and explore the latest research and innovations in this field. Ultimately, 4D food printing represents a new frontier in food processing and culinary arts, offering fresh canvas for creative expression, a means to address pressing food-related challenges, and a way to rethink our relationship with the food we eat.

Abstract
4D printing is a groundbreaking technology that seamlessly integrates additive manufacturing with smart materials, enabling the creation of multiscale objects capable of changing shapes and/or functions in a controlled and programmed manner in response to applied energy inputs. Printing technologies, mathematical modeling, responsive materials, stimuli, and structural design constitute the blueprint of 4D printing, all of which have seen rapid advancement in the past decade. These advancements have opened up numerous possibilities for dynamic and adaptive structures, finding potential use in healthcare, textiles, construction, aerospace, robotics, photonics, and electronics. However, current 4D printing primarily focuses on proof-of-concept demonstrations. Further development is necessary to expand the range of accessible materials and address fabrication complexities for widespread adoption. In this paper, we aim to deliver a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in 4D printing, probing into shape programming, exploring key aspects of resulting constructs including printing technologies, materials, structural design, morphing mechanisms, and stimuli-responsiveness, and elaborating on prominent applications across various fields. Finally, we discuss perspectives on limitations, challenges, and future developments in the realm of 4D printing. While the potential of this technology is undoubtedly vast, continued research and innovation are essential to unlocking its full capabilities and maximizing its real-world impact.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) printing, a state-of-the-art additive manufacturing technology, enables the creation of objects capable of changing shape, properties, or functionality over time in response to external stimuli. However, the lack of effective remote control and reliance on a single actuation method pose significant challenges, limiting its applications in various fields. This study aims to address these limitations by developing a novel multi-responsive nanocomposite. By coating near-infrared light (NIR)-responsive polypyrrole (PPy) onto the surface of magnetic iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs), multi-responsive PPy@Fe2O3 NPs were synthesized. Doping PPy@Fe2O3 into a thermo-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) matrix created a nanocomposite with excellent NIR and magnetic responsiveness, enabling dynamic, remote-controlled shape transformation of printed objects with precise timing and positioning using NIR and a magnetic field. Using the nanocomposite, a proof-of-concept semi-tubular construct was fabricated to evaluate its controllable transformation capability and assess the potential for modulating neural stem cell (NSC) behaviors. Furthermore, three proof-of-concept smart robots with distinct features were designed and fabricated for cargo delivery in diverse scenarios and different purposes. Importantly, all complex operations of these robots were remotely controlled using NIR illumination and an external magnetic field. This novel approach demonstrates significant progress in addressing the key challenges of remote control and actuation in 4D printing, highlighting its potential for enhanced versatility and functionality across various applications.

Abstract
4D bioprinting is a critical advancement in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM), enabling the creation of structures that dynamically respond to environmental stimuli over time. This review investigates various fabrication techniques and responsive materials that are central to these fields. It underscores the integration of multi-material and biocomposite approaches in 4D bioprinting, which is crucial for fabricating complex and functional constructs with heterogeneous properties. Using 4D bioprinting techniques enhances the mimicry of natural tissue characteristics, offering tailored responses and improved integration with biological systems. Furthermore, this study highlights the synergy between 4D bioprinting and tissue engineering and demonstrates the technology's potential for developing tissues and organs. In regenerative medicine, 4D bioprinting's applications extend to creating smart implants and advanced drug delivery systems that adapt to the body's changes, promoting healing and tissue regeneration. Finally, the challenges and future directions of 4D bioprinting are also explored and emphasize its transformative impact on biomedical engineering and the future of healthcare.

Abstract
Human bone holds an inherent capacity for repairing itself from trauma and damage, but concerning the severity of the defect, the choice of implant placement is a must. Additive manufacturing has become an elite option due to its various specifications such as patient-specific custom development of implants and its easy fabrication rather than the conventional methods used over the years. Additive manufacturing allows customization of the pore size, porosity, various mechanical properties, and complex structure design and formulation. Selective laser melting, powder bed fusion, electron beam melting, and fused deposition modeling are the various AM methods used extensively for implant fabrication. Metals, polymers, biocrystals, composites, and bio-HEA materials are used for implant fabrication for various applications. A wide variety of polymer implants are fabricated using additive manufacturing for nonload-bearing applications, and β-tricalcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass, etc. are mainly used as ceramic materials in additive manufacturing due to the biological properties that could be imparted by the latter. For decades metals have played a major role in implant fabrication, and additive manufacturing of metals provides an easy approach to implant fabrication with augmented qualities. Various challenges and setbacks faced in the fabrication need postprocessing such as sintering, coating, surface polishing, etc. The emergence of bio-HEA materials, printing of shape memory implants, and five-dimensional printing are the trends of the era in additive manufacturing.

Abstract
Recent explorations of bioengineering have generated new concepts and strategies for the processing of soft and functional materials. Droplet assembly techniques can address problems in the construction of extremely soft architectures by expanding the manufacturing capabilities using droplets containing liquid or hydrogels including weak hydrogels. This Perspective sets out to provide a brief overview of this growing field, and discusses the challenges and opportunities ahead. The study highlights the recent key advances of materials and architectures from hitherto effective droplet-assembly technologies, as well as the applications in biomedical and bioengineering fields from artificial tissues to bioreactors. It is envisaged that these assembled architectures, as nature-inspired models, will stimulate the discovery of biomaterials and miniaturized platforms for interdisciplinary research in health, biotechnology, and sustainability.

Abstract
Reproductive failure due to age, genetics and disease necessitates innovative solutions. While reproductive tissue transplantation has advanced, ongoing research seeks superior approaches. Biomaterials, bioengineering and additive manufacturing, such as three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting, are harnessed to restore reproductive function. 3D bioprinting uses materials, cells and growth factors to mimic natural tissues, proving popular for tissue engineering, notably in complex scaffold creation with cell distribution. The versatility which is brought to reproductive medicine by 3D bioprinting allows more accurate and on-site applicability to various problems that are encountered in the field. However, in the literature, there is a lack of studies encompassing the valuable applications of 3D bioprinting in reproductive medicine. This systematic review aims to improve understanding, and focuses on applications in several branches of reproductive medicine. Advancements span the restoration of ovarian function, endometrial regeneration, vaginal reconstruction, and male germ cell bioengineering. 3D bioprinting holds untapped potential in reproductive medicine.

Abstract
4D printing has attracted tremendous worldwide attention during the past decade. This technology enables the shape, property, or functionality of printed structures to change with time in response to diverse external stimuli, making the original static structures alive. The revolutionary 4D-printing technology offers remarkable benefits in controlling geometric and functional reconfiguration, thereby showcasing immense potential across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, electronics, robotics, and photonics. Here, a comprehensive review of the latest achievements in 4D printing using various types of materials and different additive manufacturing techniques is presented. The state-of-the-art strategies implemented in harnessing various 4D-printed structures are highlighted, which involve materials design, stimuli, functionalities, and applications. The machine learning approach explored for 4D printing is also discussed. Finally, the perspectives on the current challenges and future trends toward further development in 4D printing are summarized.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM), which is based on the principle of layer-by-layer shaping and stacking of discrete materials, has shown significant benefits in the fabrication of complicated implants for tissue engineering (TE). However, many native tissues exhibit anisotropic heterogenous constructs with diverse components and functions. Consequently, the replication of complicated biomimetic constructs using conventional AM processes based on a single material is challenging. Multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting (with time as the fourth dimension) has emerged as a promising solution for constructing multifunctional implants with heterogenous constructs that can mimic the host microenvironment better than single-material alternatives. Notably, 4D-printed multimaterial implants with biomimetic heterogenous architectures can provide a time-dependent programmable dynamic microenvironment that can promote cell activity and tissue regeneration in response to external stimuli. This paper first presents the typical design strategies of biomimetic heterogenous constructs in TE applications. Subsequently, the latest processes in the multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting of heterogenous tissue constructs are discussed, along with their advantages and challenges. In particular, the potential of multimaterial 4D bioprinting of smart multifunctional tissue constructs is highlighted. Furthermore, this review provides insights into how multimaterial 3D and 4D bioprinting can facilitate the realization of next-generation TE applications.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, requiring invasive surgery often before a child's first birthday. Current materials used during CHD surgery lack the ability to grow, remodel, and regenerate. To solve those limitations, 3D bioprinting is an emerging tool with the capability to create tailored constructs based on patients' own imaging data with the ability to grow and remodel once implanted in children with CHD. It has the potential to integrate multiple bioinks with several cell types and biomolecules within 3D-bioprinted constructs that exhibit good structural fidelity, stability, and mechanical integrity. This review gives an overview of CHD and recent advancements in 3D bioprinting technologies with potential use in the treatment of CHD. Moreover, the selection of appropriate biomaterials based on their chemical, physical, and biological properties that are further manipulated to suit their application are also discussed. An introduction to bioink formulations composed of various biomaterials with emphasis on multiple cell types and biomolecules is briefly overviewed. Vasculogenesis and angiogenesis of prefabricated 3D-bioprinted structures and novel 4D printing technology are also summarized. Finally, we discuss several restrictions and our perspective on future directions in 3D bioprinting technologies in the treatment of CHD.

Abstract
The realm of biomedical materials continues to evolve rapidly, driven by innovative research across interdisciplinary domains. Leveraging big data from the CAS Content Collection, this study employs quantitative analysis through natural language processing (NLP) to identify six emerging areas within nanoscale materials for biomedical applications. These areas encompass self-healing, bioelectronic, programmable, lipid-based, protein-based, and antibacterial materials. Our Nano Focus delves into the multifaceted utilization of nanoscale materials in these domains, spanning from augmenting physical and electronic properties for interfacing with human tissue to facilitating intricate functionalities like programmable drug delivery.

Abstract
Setting time as the fourth dimension, 4D printing allows us to construct dynamic structures that can change their shape, property, or functionality over time under stimuli, leading to a wave of innovations in various fields. Recently, 4D printing of smart biomaterials, biological components, and living cells into dynamic living 3D constructs with 4D effects has led to an exciting field of 4D bioprinting. 4D bioprinting has gained increasing attention and is being applied to create programmed and dynamic cell-laden constructs such as bone, cartilage, and vasculature. This review presents an overview on 4D bioprinting for engineering dynamic tissues and organs, followed by a discussion on the approaches, bioprinting technologies, smart biomaterials and smart design, bioink requirements, and applications. While much progress has been achieved, 4D bioprinting as a complex process is facing challenges that need to be addressed by transdisciplinary strategies to unleash the full potential of this advanced biofabrication technology. Finally, we present future perspectives on the rapidly evolving field of 4D bioprinting, in view of its potential, increasingly important roles in the development of advanced dynamic tissues for basic research, pharmaceutics, and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
In recent years, 3D bioprinting with various types of bioinks has been widely used in tissue engineering to fabricate human tissues and organs with appropriate biological functions. Decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) is an excellent bioink candidate because it is enriched with a variety of bioactive proteins and bioactive factors and can provide a suitable environment for tissue repair or tissue regeneration while reducing the likelihood of severe immune rejection. In this Review, we systematically review recent advances in 3D bioprinting and decellularization technologies and comprehensively detail the latest research and applications of dECM as a bioink for tissue engineering in various systems, with the aim of providing a reference for researchers in tissue engineering to better understand the properties of dECM bioinks.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) printing, combining three-dimensional (3D) printing with time-dependent stimuli-responsive shape transformation, eliminates the limitations of the conventional 3D printing technique for the fabrication of complex hollow constructs. However, existing 4D printing techniques have limitations in terms of the shapes that can be created using a single shape-changing object. In this paper, we report an advanced 4D fabrication approach for vascular junctions, particularly T-junctions, using the 4D printing technique based on coordinated sequential folding of two or more specially designed shape-changing elements. In our approach, the T-junction is split into two components, and each component is 4D printed using different synthesized shape memory polyurethanes and their nanohybrids, which have been synthesized with varying hard segment contents and by incorporating different weight percentages of photo-responsive copper sulfide-polyvinyl pyrrolidone nanoparticles. The formation of a T-junction is demonstrated by assigning different shape memory behaviors to each component of the T-junction. A cell culture study with human umbilical vein endothelial cells reveals that the cells proliferate over time, and almost 90% of cells remain viable on day 7. Finally, the formation of the T-junction in the presence of near-infrared light has been demonstrated after seeding the endothelial cells on the programmed flat surface of the two components and fluorescence microscopy at day 3 and 7 reveals that the cells adhered well and continue to proliferate over time. Hence, the proposed alternative approach has huge potential and can be used to fabricate vascular junctions in the future.

Abstract
Despite advancements in medical care, the management of bone injuries remains one of the most significant challenges in the fields of medicine and sports medicine globally. Bone tissue damage is often associated with aging, reduced quality of life, and various conditions such as trauma, cancer, and infection. While bone tissue possesses the natural capacity for self-repair and regeneration, severe damage may render conventional treatments ineffective, and bone grafting may be limited due to secondary surgical procedures and potential disease transmission. In such cases, bone tissue engineering has emerged as a viable approach, utilizing cells, scaffolds, and growth factors to repair damaged bone tissue. This research shows a comprehensive review of the current literature on the most important and effective methods and materials for improving the treatment of these injuries. Commonly employed cell types include osteogenic cells, embryonic stem cells, and mesenchymal cells, while scaffolds play a crucial role in bone tissue regeneration. To create an effective bone scaffold, a thorough understanding of bone structure, material selection, and examination of scaffold fabrication techniques from inception to the present day is necessary. By gaining insights into these three key components, the ability to design and construct appropriate bone scaffolds can be achieved. Bone tissue engineering scaffolds are evaluated based on factors such as strength, porosity, cell adhesion, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This article examines the diverse categories of bone scaffolds, the materials and techniques used in their fabrication, as well as the associated merits and drawbacks of these approaches. Furthermore, the review explores the utilization of various scaffold types in bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Nerve repair poses a significant challenge in the field of tissue regeneration. As a bioengineered therapeutic method, nerve conduits have been developed to address damaged nerve repair. However, despite their remarkable potential, it is still challenging to encompass complex physiologically microenvironmental cues (both biophysical and biochemical factors) to synergistically regulate stem cell differentiation within the implanted nerve conduits, especially in a facile manner. In this study, a neurogenic nerve conduit with self-actuated ability has been developed by in situ immobilization of neurogenic factors onto printed architectures with aligned microgrooves. One objective was to facilitate self-entubulation, ultimately enhancing nerve repairs. Our results demonstrated that the integration of topographical and in situ biological cues could accurately mimic native microenvironments, leading to a significant improvement in neural alignment and enhanced neural differentiation within the conduit. This innovative approach offers a revolutionary method for fabricating multifunctional nerve conduits, capable of modulating neural regeneration efficiently. It has the potential to accelerate the functional recovery of injured neural tissues, providing a promising avenue for advancing nerve repair therapies.

Abstract
The rapid development and advancements in field of shape memory alloys (SMAA) has tremendously increased the progress in four-dimensional (4D) printing. The conventional 4D printing will require skilled manpower but utilization of reversibility aspect achieved using self adjusting external stimuli will eliminate the necessity of sophisticated devices and human intervention in 4D printing. The components created using reversible 4D printing can be reused after each recovery cycle that suits the current industry requirements. This review is divided into three sections: The first section starts with a detailed illustration of different mechanisms associated with SMAA and shape memory polymers SMPP along with an illustration of realistic 3D-printed SMAA and SMPP. The second section of this paper deals with the different methods of manufacture with the advantages and disadvantages of different types of SMAA. The third section deals with the mechanisms associated with SMPP, namely (1) Thermo-responsive mechanism, (2) Chemo-responsive mechanism, and (3) Photo-responsive mechanism along with a detailed insight into the aspect of repeatability and reversibility. The fourth section presents an exhaustive review of the application of SMAA and SMPP in civil engineering. The last section of this work throws light on the challenges faced in 4D reversible printing of SMAA and SMPP along with the potential solutions and presents directions for future research.

Abstract
4D printing technology refers to the manufacturing of products using 3D printing techniques that are capable of changing shape or structure in response to external stimuli. Compared with traditional 3D printing, the additional dimension is manifested in the time dimension. Facilitated by the advancement of magnetic smart materials and 3D printing technology, magnetically controlled 4D printing technology has a wide range of application prospects in many fields such as medical treatment, electronic flexible devices, and industrial manufacturing. Magnetically controlled 4D printing technology is a new scientific research field in the 21st century, which includes but is not limited to the following disciplines: mechanics, materials, dynamics, physics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism. It involves many fields and needs to be summarized systematically. First, this article introduces various magnetic intelligent materials, which are suitable for magnetically controlled 4D printing, and discusses their programmability. Second, regarding the printing process, the article introduces how to preset the material distribution as well as the research progress about the optimization of magnetically controlled 4D printing platforms and the distribution of magnetic field profiles. Third, the article also makes a brief introduction to the applications of magnetically controlled 4D printing technology in medical, electronic flexible devices, and industrial manufacturing fields.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a paramount global mortality concern, and their prevalence is on a relentless ascent. Despite the effectiveness of contemporary medical interventions in mitigating CVD-related fatality rates and complications, their efficacy remains curtailed by an array of limitations. These include the suboptimal efficiency of direct cell injection and an inherent disequilibrium between the demand and availability of heart transplantations. Consequently, the imperative to formulate innovative strategies for cardiac regeneration therapy becomes unmistakable. Within this context, 3D bioprinting technology emerges as a vanguard contender, occupying a pivotal niche in the realm of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This state-of-the-art methodology holds the potential to fabricate intricate heart tissues endowed with multifaceted structures and functionalities, thereby engendering substantial promise. By harnessing the prowess of 3D bioprinting, it becomes plausible to synthesize functional cardiac architectures seamlessly enmeshed with the host tissue, affording a viable avenue for the restitution of infarcted domains and, by extension, mitigating the onerous yoke of CVDs. In this review, we encapsulate the myriad applications of 3D bioprinting technology in the domain of heart tissue regeneration. Furthermore, we usher in the latest advancements in printing methodologies and bioinks, culminating in an exploration of the extant challenges and the vista of possibilities inherent to a diverse array of approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Customization and the production of patient-specific devices, tailoring the unique anatomy of each patient's jaw and facial structures, are the new frontiers in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. As a technological advancement, additive manufacturing has been applied to produce customized objects based on 3D computerized models. Therefore, this paper presents advances in additive manufacturing strategies for patient-specific devices in diverse dental specialties. METHODS This paper overviews current 3D printing techniques to fabricate dental and maxillofacial devices. Then, the most recent literature (2018-2023) available in scientific databases reporting advances in 3D-printed patient-specific devices for dental and maxillofacial applications is critically discussed, focusing on the major outcomes, material-related details, and potential clinical advantages. RESULTS The recent application of 3D-printed customized devices in oral prosthodontics, implantology and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics are presented. Moreover, the potential application of 4D printing as an advanced manufacturing technology and the challenges and future perspectives for additive manufacturing in the dental and maxillofacial area are reported. SIGNIFICANCE Additive manufacturing techniques have been designed to benefit several areas of dentistry, and the technologies, materials, and devices continue to be optimized. Image-based and accurately printed patient-specific devices to replace, repair, and regenerate dental and maxillofacial structures hold significant potential to maximize the standard of care in dentistry.

This review sheds light on recent advancements and potential applications of 4D printing in dentistry, delving into the fundamental principles and materials involved. It emphasizes the versatility of shape-changing polymers and composites, highlighting their ability to adapt dynamically. Furthermore, the review explores the challenges and opportunities in integrating 4D printing into dental practice, including the customization of dental prosthetics, orthodontic devices, and drug delivery systems and also probing into the potential benefits of utilizing stimuli-responsive materials to improve patient comfort, treatment outcomes, and overall efficiency and the review discusses current limitations and future directions, emphasizing the importance of standardized fabrication techniques, biocompatible materials, and regulatory considerations. Owing to its diverse applications and advantages, 4D printing technology is poised to transform multiple facets of dental practice, thereby fostering the development of healthcare solutions that are more tailored, effective, and centered around patient needs.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) printing unlocks new potentials for personalized biomedical implantation, but still with hurdles of lacking suitable materials. Herein, we demonstrate a bioresorbable shape memory elastomer (SME) with high elasticity at both below and above its phase transition temperature (Ttrans). This SME can be digital light 3D printed by co-polymerizing glycerol dodecanoate acrylate prepolymer (pre-PGDA) with acrylic acid monomer to form crosslinked Poly(glycerol dodecanoate acrylate) (PGDA)-Polyacrylic acid (PAA), or PGDA-PAA network. The printed complex, free-standing 3D structures with high-resolution features exhibit shape programming properties at a physiological temperature. By tuning the pre-PGDA weight ratios between 55 wt% and 70 wt%, Ttrans varies between 39.2 and 47.2 ℃ while Young's moduli (E) range 40-170 MPa below Ttrans with fractural strain (εf) of 170 %-200 %. Above Ttrans, E drops to 1-1.82 MPa which is close to those of soft tissue. Strikingly, εf of 130-180 % is still maintained. In vitro biocompatibility test on the material shows > 90 % cell proliferation and great cell attachment. In vivo vascular grafting trials underline the geometrical and mechanical adaptability of these 4D printed constructs in regenerating the aorta tissue. Biodegradation of the implants shows the possibility of their full replacement by natural tissue over time. To highlight its potential for personalized medicine, a patient-specific left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder was printed and implanted endovascularly into an in vitro heart model. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: 4D printed shape-memory elastomer (SME) implants particularly designed and manufactured for a patient are greatly sought-after in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Traditional shape-memory polymers used in these implants often suffer from issues like unsuitable transition temperatures, poor biocompatibility, limited 3D design complexity, and low toughness, making them unsuitable for MIS. Our new SME, with an adjustable transition temperature and enhanced toughness, is both biocompatible and naturally degradable, particularly in cardiovascular contexts. This allows implants, like biomedical scaffolds, to be programmed at room temperature and then adapt to the body's physiological conditions post-implantation. Our studies, including in vivo vascular grafts and in vitro device implantation, highlight the SME's effectiveness in aortic tissue regeneration and its promising applications in MIS.

Abstract
This review article presents a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the field of 3D printable structures with self-healing properties. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a versatile technology that enables the rapid manufacturing of complex geometric structures with precision and functionality not previously attainable. However, the application of 3DP technology is still limited by the availability of materials with customizable properties specifically designed for additive manufacturing. The addition of self-healing properties within 3D printed objects is of high interest as it can improve the performance and lifespan of structural components, and even enable the mimicking of living tissues for biomedical applications, such as organs printing. The review will discuss and analyze the most relevant results reported in recent years in the development of self-healing polymeric materials that can be processed via 3D printing. After introducing the chemical and physical self-healing mechanism that can be exploited, the literature review here reported will focus in particular on printability and repairing performances. At last, actual perspective and possible development field will be critically discussed.

Abstract
The power of three-dimensional printing in designing personalized scaffolds with precise dimensions and properties is well-known. However, minimally invasive implantation of complex scaffolds is still challenging. Here, we develop amphiphilic dynamic thermoset polyurethanes catering for multi-material four-dimensional printing to fabricate supportive scaffolds with body temperature-triggered shape memory and water-triggered programmable deformation. Shape memory effect enables the two-dimensional printed pattern to be fixed into temporary one-dimensional shape, facilitating transcatheter delivery. Upon implantation, the body temperature triggers shape recovery of the one-dimensional shape to its original two-dimensional pattern. After swelling, the hydrated pattern undergoes programmable morphing into the desired three-dimensional structure because of swelling mismatch. The structure exhibits unusual soft-to-stiff transition due to the water-driven microphase separation formed between hydrophilic and hydrophobic chain segments. The integration of shape memory, programmable deformability, and swelling-stiffening properties makes the developed dynamic thermoset polyurethanes promising supportive void-filling scaffold materials for minimally invasive implantation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Corneal alkali burns can lead to ulceration, perforation, and even corneal blindness due to epithelial defects and extensive cell necrosis, resulting in poor healing outcomes. Previous studies have found that chitosan-based in situ hydrogel loaded with limbal epithelium stem cells (LESCs) has a certain reparative effect on corneal alkali burns. However, the inconsistent pore sizes of the carriers and low cell loading rates have resulted in suboptimal repair outcomes. In this study, 4D bioprinting technology was used to prepare a chitosan-based thermosensitive gel carrier (4D-CTH) with uniform pore size and adjustable shape to improve the transfer capacity of LESCs. METHODS Prepare solutions of chitosan acetate, carboxymethyl chitosan, and β-glycerophosphate sodium at specific concentrations, and mix them in certain proportions to create a pore-size uniform scaffold using 4D bioprinting technology. Extract and culture rat LESCs (rLESCs) in vitro, perform immunofluorescence experiments to observe the positivity rate of deltaNp63 cells for cell identification. Conduct a series of experiments to validate the cell compatibility of 4D-CTH, including CCK-8 assay to assess cell toxicity, scratch assay to evaluate the effect of 4D-CTH on rLESCs migration, and Calcein-AM/PI cell staining experiment to examine the impact of 4D-CTH on rLESCs proliferation and morphology. Establish a severe alkali burn model in rat corneas, transplant rLESCs onto the injured cornea using 4D-CTH, periodically observe corneal opacity and neovascularization using a slit lamp, and evaluate epithelial healing by fluorescein sodium staining. Assess the therapeutic effect 4D-CTH-loaded rLESCs on corneal alkali burn through histological evaluation of corneal tissue paraffin sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, as well as immunofluorescence staining of frozen sections. RESULTS Using the 4D-CTH, rLESCs were transferred to the alkali burn wounds of rats. Compared with the traditional treatment group (chitosan in situ hydrogel encapsulating rLESCs), the 4D-CTH-rLESC group had significantly higher repair efficiency of corneal injury, such as lower corneal opacity score (1.2 ± 0.4472 vs 0.4 ± 0.5477, p < 0.05) and neovascularization score (5.5 ± 1.118 vs 2.6 ± 0.9618, p < 0.01), and significantly higher corneal epithelial wound healing rate (72.09 ± 3.568% vs 86.60 ± 5.004%, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION In summary, the corneas of the 4D-CTH-rLESC treatment group were similar to the normal corneas and had a complete corneal structure. These findings suggested that LESCs encapsulated by 4D-CTH significantly accelerated corneal wound healing after alkali burn and can be considered as a rapid and effective method for treating epithelial defects.

Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or silicone elastomers have garnered considerable attention in the field of medical device applications due to their superior thermal stability. However, conventional manufacturing techniques for silicone elastomers suffer from drawbacks such as cost, lengthy production time, and inherent difficulties in fabricating complex structures. To address these limitations, photosensitive polydimethylsiloxane urethane methacrylate (PDMSUMA) oligomers were synthesized, and their curing behaviors were specifically investigated for vat photopolymerization 3D printing applications. The study focused on exploring the impact of weight ratios between poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in the PDMSUMA resin formulation. The addition of PEGDMA as a reactive diluent was found to enhance the printability of the PDMSUMA resin and decrease its viscosity. Thermal, mechanical, and shape memory properties of the 3D-printed specimens were examined. Our findings demonstrate the potential of PDMSUMA resins for developing customizable shape memory materials with tailored properties.

Abstract
The field of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is rich in pathological diversity and broad in the ages that it treats. Moreover, the CMF skeleton is a complex confluence of sensory organs and hard and soft tissue with load-bearing demands that can change within millimeters. Computer-aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing (AM) create extraordinary opportunities to repair the infinite array of craniomaxillofacial defects that exist because of the aforementioned circumstances. 3D printed scaffolds have the potential to serve as a comparable if not superior alternative to the "gold standard" autologous graft. In vitro and in vivo studies continue to investigate the optimal 3D printed scaffold design and composition to foster bone regeneration that is suited to the unique biological and mechanical environment of each CMF defect. Furthermore, 3D printed fixation devices serve as a patient-specific alternative to those that are available off-the-shelf with an opportunity to reduce operative time and optimize fit. Similar benefits have been found to apply to 3D printed anatomical models and surgical guides for preoperative or intraoperative use. Creation and implementation of these devices requires extensive preclinical and clinical research, novel manufacturing capabilities, and strict regulatory oversight. Researchers, manufacturers, CMF surgeons, and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are working in tandem to further the development of such technology within their respective domains, all with a mutual goal to deliver safe, effective, cost-efficient, and patient-specific CMF care. This manuscript reviews FDA regulatory status, 3D printing techniques, biomaterials, and sterilization procedures suitable for 3D printed devices of the craniomaxillofacial skeleton. It also seeks to discuss recent clinical applications, economic feasibility, and future directions of this novel technology. By reviewing the current state of 3D printing in CMF surgery, we hope to gain a better understanding of its impact and in turn identify opportunities to further the development of patient-specific surgical care.

Abstract
(1) Background: Polymeric heart valves are prostheses constructed out of flexible, synthetic materials to combine the advantageous hemodynamics of biological valves with the longevity of mechanical valves. This idea from the early days of heart valve prosthetics has experienced a renaissance in recent years due to advances in polymer science. Here, we present progress on a novel, 3D-printable aortic valve prosthesis, the TIPI valve, removing the foldable metal leaflet restrictor structure in its center. Our aim is to create a competitive alternative to current valve prostheses made from flexible polymers. (2) Methods: Three-dimensional (3D) prototypes were designed and subsequently printed in silicone. Hemodynamic performance was measured with an HKP 2.0 hemodynamic testing device using an aortic valve bioprosthesis (BP), a mechanical prosthesis (MP), and the previously published prototype (TIPI 2.2) as benchmarks. (3) Results: The latest prototype (TIPI 3.4) showed improved performance in terms of regurgitation fraction (TIPI 3.4: 15.2 ± 3.7%, TIPI 2.2: 36.6 ± 5.0%, BP: 8.8 ± 0.3%, MP: 13.2 ± 0.7%), systolic pressure gradient (TIPI 3.4: 11.0 ± 2.7 mmHg, TIPI 2.2: 12.8 ± 2.2 mmHg, BP: 8.2 ± 0.9 mmHg, MP: 10.5 ± 0.6 mmHg), and effective orifice area (EOA, TIPI 3.4: 1.39 cm2, TIPI 2.2: 1.28 cm2, BP: 1.58 cm2, MP: 1.38 cm2), which was equivalent to currently used aortic valve prostheses. (4) Conclusions: Removal of the central restrictor structure alleviated previous concerns about its potential thrombogenicity and significantly increased the area of unobstructed opening. The prototypes showed unidirectional leaflet movement and very promising performance characteristics within our testing setup. The resulting simplicity of the shape compared to other approaches for polymeric heart valves could be suitable not only for 3D printing, but also for fast and easy mass production using molds and modern, highly biocompatible polymers.

Abstract
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) and their composites (SMPCs) are smart materials that can be stably deformed and then return to their original shape under external stimulation, thus having a memory of their shape. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced technology for fabricating products using a digital software tool. Four-dimensional (4D) printing is a new generation of additive manufacturing technology that combines shape memory materials and 3D printing technology. Currently, 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs are gaining considerable research attention and are finding use in various fields, including biomedical science. This review introduces SMPs, SMPCs, and 4D printing technologies, highlighting several special 4D-printed structures. It summarizes the recent research progress of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs in various fields, with particular emphasis on biomedical applications. Additionally, it presents an overview of the challenges and development prospects of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs and provides a preliminary discussion and useful reference for the research and application of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs.

Abstract
Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare cancer arising in skeletal muscle that typically impacts children and young adults. It is a worldwide challenge in child health as treatment outcomes for metastatic and recurrent disease still pose a major concern for both basic and clinical scientists. The treatment strategies for rhabdomyosarcoma include multi-agent chemotherapies after surgical resection with or without ionization radiotherapy. In this comprehensive review, we first provide a detailed clinical understanding of rhabdomyosarcoma including its classification and subtypes, diagnosis, and treatment strategies. Later, we focus on chemotherapy strategies for this childhood sarcoma and discuss the impact of three mechanisms that are involved in the chemotherapy response including apoptosis, macro-autophagy, and the unfolded protein response. Finally, we discuss in vivo mouse and zebrafish models and in vitro three-dimensional bioengineering models of rhabdomyosarcoma to screen future therapeutic approaches and promote muscle regeneration.

Abstract
Blood vessels are essential for nutrient and oxygen delivery and waste removal. Scaffold-repairing materials with functional vascular networks are widely used in bone tissue engineering. Additive manufacturing is a manufacturing technology that creates three-dimensional solids by stacking substances layer by layer, mainly including but not limited to 3D printing, but also 4D printing, 5D printing and 6D printing. It can be effectively combined with vascularization to meet the needs of vascularized tissue scaffolds by precisely tuning the mechanical structure and biological properties of smart vascular scaffolds. Herein, the development of neovascularization to vascularization to bone tissue engineering is systematically discussed in terms of the importance of vascularization to the tissue. Additionally, the research progress and future prospects of vascularized 3D printed scaffold materials are highlighted and presented in four categories: functional vascularized 3D printed scaffolds, cell-based vascularized 3D printed scaffolds, vascularized 3D printed scaffolds loaded with specific carriers and bionic vascularized 3D printed scaffolds. Finally, a brief review of vascularized additive manufacturing-tissue scaffolds in related tissues such as the vascular tissue engineering, cardiovascular system, skeletal muscle, soft tissue and a discussion of the challenges and development efforts leading to significant advances in intelligent vascularized tissue regeneration is presented.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an innovative additive manufacturing technology used to fabricate structures that can evolve over time when exposed to a predefined environmental stimulus. 4D printed objects are no longer static objects but programmable active structures that accomplish their functions thanks to a change over time in their physical/chemical properties that usually displays macroscopically as a shapeshifting in response to an external stimulus. 4D printing is characterized by several entangled features (e.g., involved material(s), structure geometry, and applied stimulus entities) that need to be carefully coupled to obtain a favorable fabrication and a functioning structure. Overall, the integration of micro-/nanofabrication methods of biomaterials with nanomaterials represents a promising approach for the development of advanced materials. The ability to construct complex and multifunctional triggerable structures capable of being activated allows for the control of biomedical device activity, reducing the need for invasive interventions. Such advancements provide new tools to biomedical engineers and clinicians to design dynamically actuated implantable devices. In this context, the aim of this review is to demonstrate the potential of 4D printing as an enabling manufacturing technology to code the environmentally triggered physical evolution of structures and devices of biomedical interest.

Abstract
This systematic review, not financially supported by any funding body, aims to synthesize the current knowledge on the applications, potential benefits, and challenges of 4D printing in civil engineering, with a focus on its role in sustainable solutions. Comprehensive searches were conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using related keywords. Articles that discussed 4D printing within civil engineering and construction contexts, encompassing both conceptual and empirical studies, were included. The findings suggest that 4D printing, with its time-responsive transformation feature, can enhance design freedom, improve structural performance, and increase environmental efficiency in construction. However, challenges persist in material performance, scalability, and cost. Despite these, ongoing advancements signal potential future developments that could widen the opportunities for large-scale applications of 4D printing in civil engineering. The potential use of renewable, bio-based materials could also lead to more sustainable construction practices. This review highlights the transformative potential of 4D printing, underlining the need for further research to fully leverage its capabilities and address current limitations. 4D printing emerges as a promising avenue for sustainable civil engineering solutions, offering a transformative approach that calls for continued exploration and development.

Abstract
Engineering of myocardial tissues has become a promising therapeutic strategy for treating myocardial infarction (MI). However, a significant challenge remains in generating clinically relevant myocardial tissues that possess native microstructural characteristics and fulfill the requirements for implantation within the human body. In this study, a thick 3D myocardial construct with anisotropic myofibers and perfusable branched vascular channels is created with clinically relevant dimensions using a customized beam-scanning stereolithography printing technique. To obtain tissue-specific matrix niches, a decellularized extracellular matrix microfiber-reinforced gelatin-based bioink is developed. The bioink plays a crucial role in facilitating the precise manufacturing of a hierarchical microstructure, enabling us to better replicate the physiological characteristics of the native myocardial tissue matrix in terms of structure, biomechanics, and bioactivity. Through the integration of the tailored bioink with our printing method, we demonstrate a biomimetic architecture, appropriate biomechanical properties, vascularization, and improved functionality of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes in the thick tissue construct in vitro. This work not only offers a novel and effective means to generate biomimetic heart tissue in vitro for the treatment of MI, but also introduces a potential methodology for creating clinically relevant tissue products to aid in other complex tissue/organ regeneration and disease model applications.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases have remained the leading cause of death worldwide for the past 20 years. The current clinical therapeutic measures, including bypass surgery, stent implantation and pharmacotherapy, are not enough to repair the massive loss of cardiomyocytes after myocardial ischemia. Timely replenishment with functional myocardial tissue via biomedical engineering is the most direct and effective means to improve the prognosis and survival rate of patients. It is widely recognized that 4D printing technology introduces an additional dimension of time in comparison with traditional 3D printing. Additionally, in the context of 4D bioprinting, both the printed material and the resulting product are designed to be biocompatible, which will be the mainstream of bioprinting in the future. Thus, this review focuses on the application of 4D bioprinting in cardiovascular diseases, discusses the bottleneck of the development of 4D bioprinting, and finally looks forward to the future direction and prospect of this revolutionary technology.

Abstract
4D printing has a great potential for the manufacturing of soft robotics and medical devices. The alliance of digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing and novel shape-memory photopolymers allows for the fabrication of smart 4D-printed medical devices in high resolution and with tailorable functionalities. However, most of the reported 4D-printed materials are nondegradable, which limits their clinical applications. On the other hand, 4D printing of biodegradable shape-memory elastomers is highly challenging, especially when transition points close to physiological temperature and shape fixation under ambient conditions are required. Here, we report the 4D printing of biodegradable shape-memory elastomers with tailorable transition points covering physiological temperature, by using poly(D,L-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) methacrylates at various monomer feed ratios. After the programming step, the high-resolution DLP printed stents preserved their folded shape at room temperature, and showed efficient shape recovery at 37 °C. The materials were cytocompatible and readily degradable under physiological conditions. Furthermore, drug-loaded devices with tuneable release kinetics were realized by DLP-printing with resins containing polymers and levofloxacin or nintedanib. This study offers a new perspective for the development of next-generation 4D-printed medical devices.

Abstract
3D printing is a state-of-the-art technology for the fabrication of biomaterials with myriad applications in translational medicine. After stimuli-responsive properties were introduced to 3D printing (known as 4D printing), intelligent biomaterials with shape configuration time-dependent character have been developed. Polysaccharides are biodegradable polymers sensitive to several physical, chemical, and biological stimuli, suited for 3D and 4D printing. On the other hand, engineering of mechanical strength and printability of polysaccharide-based scaffolds along with their aneural, avascular, and poor metabolic characteristics need to be optimized varying printing parameters. Multiple disciplines such as biomedicine, chemistry, materials, and computer sciences should be integrated to achieve multipurpose printable biomaterials. In this work, 3D and 4D printing technologies are briefly compared, summarizing the literature on biomaterials engineering though printing techniques, and highlighting different challenges associated with 3D/4D printing, as well as the role of polysaccharides in the technological shift from 3D to 4D printing for translational medicine.

Abstract
Bioprinting is an innovative and emerging technology of additive manufacturing (AM) and has revolutionized the biomedical sector by printing three-dimensional (3D) cell-laden constructs in a precise and controlled manner for numerous clinical applications. This approach uses biomaterials and varying types of cells to print constructs for tissue regeneration, e.g., cardiac, bone, corneal, cartilage, neural, and skin. Furthermore, bioprinting technology helps to develop drug delivery and wound healing systems, bio-actuators, bio-robotics, and bio-sensors. More recently, the development of four-dimensional (4D) bioprinting technology and stimuli-responsive materials has transformed the biomedical sector with numerous innovations and revolutions. This issue also leads to the exponential growth of the bioprinting market, with a value over billions of dollars. The present study reviews the concepts and developments of 3D and 4D bioprinting technologies, surveys the applications of these technologies in the biomedical sector, and discusses their potential research topics for future works. It is also urged that collaborative and valiant efforts from clinicians, engineers, scientists, and regulatory bodies are needed for translating this technology into the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and healthcare systems.

Abstract
The complex or compromised bone defects caused by osteomyelitis, malignant tumors, metastatic tumors, skeletal abnormalities, and systemic diseases are difficult to be self-repaired, leading to a non-union fracture. With the increasing demands of bone transplantation, more and more attention has been paid to artificial bone substitutes. As biopolymer-based aerogel materials, nanocellulose aerogels have been widely utilized in bone tissue engineering. More importantly, nanocellulose aerogels not only mimic the structure of the extracellular matrix but could also deliver drugs and bioactive molecules to promote tissue healing and growth. Here, we reviewed the most recent literature about nanocellulose-based aerogels, summarized the preparation, modification, composite fabrication, and applications of nanocellulose-based aerogels in bone tissue engineering, as well as giving special focus to the current limitations and future opportunities of nanocellulose aerogels for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Purpose 4D fabrication techniques have been utilized for advanced biomedical therapeutics due to their ability to create dynamic constructs that can transform into desired shapes on demand. The internal structure of the human cardiovascular system is complex, where the contracting heart has a highly curved surface that changes shape with the heart's dynamic beating motion. Hence, 4D architectures that adjust their shapes as required are a good candidate to readily deliver cardiac cells into the damaged heart and/or to serve as self-morphing tissue scaffolds/patches for healing cardiac diseases. In this proof-of-concept in vitro study, a two-in-one 4D smart cardiac construct that integrates the functions of minimally invasive cell vehicles and in situ tissue patches was developed for repairing damaged myocardial tissue. Methods For this purpose, a series of thermo-responsive 4D structures with different shapes and sizes were fabricated via the combination of fused deposition modeling (FDM)-printing and stamping molding. The thermo-responsive 4D constructs were firstly optimized to exhibit their shape transformation behavior at the designated temperature for convenient control. After which, the mechanical properties, shape recovery rate, and shape recovery speed of the 4D constructs at different temperatures were thoroughly evaluated. Also, the proliferation and functional prototype of human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) on the 4D constructs were quantified and evaluated using F-actin staining and immunostaining. Results Our results showed that the 4D constructs possessed the desirable capability of shape-changing from spherical carriers to unfolded patches at human body temperature and exhibited excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, myocardial maturation in vitro with a uniform and printing pattern-specific cell distribution was observed on the surface of the unfolded 4D constructs. Conclusion We successfully developed a 4D smart cardiac construct that integrates the functions of minimally invasive cell vehicles and in situ tissue patches for repairing damaged myocardial tissue.

Abstract
Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have offered promising alternatives for clinical treatment of body tissue traumas, losses, dysfunctions, or diseases, where scaffold-based strategies are particularly popular and effective. Over the decades, scaffolds for tissue regeneration have been remarkably evolving. Nevertheless, conventional scaffolds still confront grand challenges in bio-adaptions in terms of both tissue-scaffold and cell-scaffold interplays, for example complying with complicated three-dimensional (3D) shapes of biological tissues and recapitulating the ordered cell regulation effects of native cell microenvironments. Benefiting from the recent advances in "intelligent" biomaterials, reconfigurable scaffolds have been emerging, demonstrating great promise in addressing the bio-adaption challenges through altering their macro-shapes and/or micro-structures. This mini-review article presents a brief overview of the cutting-edge research on reconfigurable scaffolds, summarizing the materials for forming reconfigurable scaffolds and highlighting their applications for adaptive tissue regeneration. Finally, the challenges and prospects of reconfigurable scaffolds are also discussed, shedding light on the bright future of next-generation reconfigurable scaffolds with upgrading adaptability.

Abstract
Two-photon polymerization (TPP) has been widely used to create 3D micro- and nanoscale scaffolds for biological and mechanobiological studies, which often require the mechanical characterization of the TPP fabricated structures. To satisfy physiological requirements, most of the mechanical characterizations need to be conducted in liquid. However, previous characterizations of TPP fabricated structures were all conducted in air due to the limitation of conventional micro- and nanoscale mechanical testing methods. In this study, we report a new experimental method for testing the mechanical properties of TPP-printed microfibers in liquid. The experiments show that the mechanical behaviors of the microfibers tested in liquid are significantly different from those tested in air. By controlling the TPP writing parameters, the mechanical properties of the microfibers can be tailored over a wide range to meet a variety of mechanobiology applications. In addition, it is found that, in water, the plasticly deformed microfibers can return to their pre-deformed shape after tensile strain is released. The shape recovery time is dependent on the size of microfibers. The experimental method represents a significant advancement in mechanical testing of TPP fabricated structures and may help release the full potential of TPP fabricated 3D tissue scaffold for mechanobiological studies.

Abstract
The repair of severe bone defects is still a formidable clinical challenge, requiring the implantation of bone grafts or bone substitute materials. The development of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has received considerable attention in bone tissue engineering over the past decade. However, 3D printing has a limitation. It only takes into account the original form of the printed scaffold, which is inanimate and static, and is not suitable for dynamic organisms. With the emergence of stimuli-responsive materials, four-dimensional (4D) printing has become the next-generation solution for biological tissue engineering. It combines the concept of time with three-dimensional printing. Over time, 4D-printed scaffolds change their appearance or function in response to environmental stimuli (physical, chemical, and biological). In conclusion, 4D printing is the change of the fourth dimension (time) in 3D printing, which provides unprecedented potential for bone tissue repair. In this review, we will discuss the latest research on shape memory materials and 4D printing in bone tissue repair.

Abstract
Four-dimensional (4 D) printing is a novel emerging technology, which can be defined as the ability of 3 D printed materials to change their form and functions. The term 'time' is added to 3 D printing as the fourth dimension, in which materials can respond to a stimulus after finishing the manufacturing process. 4 D printing provides more versatility in terms of size, shape, and structure after printing the construct. Complex material programmability, multi-material printing, and precise structure design are the essential requirements of 4 D printing systems. The utilization of stimuli-responsive polymers has increasingly taken the place of cell traction force-dependent methods and manual folding, offering a more advanced technique to affect a construct's adjusted shape transformation. The present review highlights the concept of 4 D printing and the responsive bioinks used in 4 D printing, such as water-responsive, pH-responsive, thermo-responsive, and light-responsive materials used in tissue regeneration. Cell traction force methods are described as well. Finally, this paper aims to introduce the limitations and future trends of 4 D printing in biomedical applications based on selected key references from the last decade.

Abstract
This series of publications describes research rendering soft polyisobutylene (PIB)-based thermoplastic elastomers 3D printable by blending with rigid chemically compatible thermoplastics. The molecular structure, morphology, physical properties, and 3D printability of such blends have been systematically investigated. The authors' first report was concerned with the rendering of soft poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) (SIBS) 3D printable by blending with rigid polystyrene (PS). Here they report the macromolecular engineering of SIBS/polyphenylene oxide (PPO) blends for 3D printing. PPO, a rigid high-performance thermoplastic, is compatible with the hard PS block in SIBS; however, neither PPO nor SIBS can be directly 3D printed. The microphase-separated structures and physical properties of SIBS/PPO blends are systematically tuned by controlling blending ratios and molecular weights. Suitable composition ranges and desirable properties of SIBS/PPO blends for 3D printing are optimized. The morphology and properties of SIBS/PPO blends are characterized by an ensemble of techniques, including atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and thermal and mechanical properties testing. The elucidation of processing-structure-property relationship of SIBS/PPO blends is essential for 3D printing and advanced manufacturing of high-performance polymer systems.

Abstract
After the successful commercial exploitation of 3D printing technology, the advanced version of additive manufacturing, i.e., 4D printing, has been a new buzz in the technology-driven industries since 2013. It is a judicious combination of 3D printing technologies and smart materials (stimuli responsive), where time is the fourth dimension. Materials such as liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), shape memory polymers, alloys and composites exhibiting properties such as self-assembling and self-healing are used in the development/manufacturing of these products, which respond to external stimuli such as solvent, temperature, light, etc. The technologies being used are direct ink writing (DIW), fused filament fabrication (FFF), etc. It offers several advantages over 3D printing and has been exploited in different sectors such as healthcare, textiles, etc. Some remarkable applications of 4D printing technology in healthcare are self-adjusting stents, artificial muscle and drug delivery applications. Potential of applications call for further research into more responsive materials and technologies in this field. The given review is an attempt to collate all the information pertaining to techniques employed, raw materials, applications, clinical trials, recent patents and publications specific to healthcare products. The technology has also been evaluated in terms of regulatory perspectives. The data garnered is expected to make a strong contribution to the field of technology for human welfare and healthcare.

Abstract
As a kind of smart material, shape memory polymer (SMP) shows great application potential in the biomedical field. Compared with traditional metal-based medical devices, SMP-based devices have the following characteristics: 1) The adaptive ability allows the biomedical device to better match the surrounding tissue after being implanted into the body by minimally invasive implantation; 2) it has better biocompatibility and adjustable biodegradability; 3) mechanical properties can be regulated in a large range to better match with the surrounding tissue. 4D printing technology is a comprehensive technology based on smart materials and 3D printing, which has great application value in the biomedical field. 4D printing technology breaks through the technical bottleneck of personalized customization and provides a new opportunity for the further development of the biomedical field. This paper summarizes the application of SMP and 4D printing technology in the field of bone tissue scaffolds, tracheal scaffolds, and drug release, etc. Moreover, this paper analyzes the existing problems and prospects, hoping to provide a preliminary discussion and useful reference for the application of SMP in biomedical engineering.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has been developed as a viable method for fabricating functional tissues and organs by precisely spatially arranging biomaterials, cells, and biochemical components in a layer-by-layer fashion. Among the various bioprinting strategies, digital light-processing (DLP) printing has gained enormous attention due to its applications in tissue engineering and biomedical fields. It allows for high spatial resolution and the rapid printing of complex structures. Although bio-ink is a critical aspect of 3D bioprinting, only a few bio-inks have been used for DLP bioprinting in contrast to the number of bio-inks employed for other bioprinters. Recently, silk fibroin (SF), as a natural bio-ink material used for DLP 3D bioprinting, has gained extensive attention with respect to biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility and mechanical properties. This review introduces DLP-based 3D bioprinting, its related technology, and the fabrication process of silk fibroin-based bio-ink. Then, we summarize the applications of DLP 3D bioprinting based on SF-based bio-ink in the tissue engineering and biomedical fields. We also discuss the current limitations and future perspectives of DLP 3D bioprinting using SF-based bio-ink.

Abstract
Recently, four-dimensional (4D) shape-morphing structures, which can dynamically change shape over time, have attracted much attention in biomedical manufacturing. The 4D printing has the capacity to fabricate dynamic construction conforming to the natural bending of biological tissues, superior to other manufacturing techniques. In this study, we presented a multi-responsive, flexible, and biocompatible 4D-printed bilayer hydrogel based on acrylamide-acrylic acid/cellulose nanocrystal (AAm-AAc/CNC) network. The first layer was first stretched and then formed reversible coordination with Fe3+ to maintain this pre-stretched length; it was later combined with a second layer. The deformation process was actuated by the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in the first layer which restored it to its initial length. The deformation condition was to immerse the 4D construct in sodium lactate (LA-Na) and then expose it to ultraviolet (UV) light until maximal deformation was realized. The bending degree of this 4D construct can be programmed by modifying the pre-stretched lengths of the first layer. We explored various deformation steps in simple and complex constructs to verify that the 4D bilayer hydrogel can mimic the curved morphology of the intestines. The bilayer hydrogel can also curve in deionized water due to anisotropic volume change yet the response time and maximum bending degree was inferior to deformation in LA-Na and UV light. Finally, we made a 4D-printed bilayer hydrogel stent to test its closure effect for enteroatmospheric fistulas (EAFs) in vitro and in vivo. The results illustrate that the hydrogel plays a role in the temporary closure of EAFs. This study offers an effective method to produce curved structures and expands the potential applications of 4D printing in biomedical fields. A novel strategy to fabricate 4D-printed multi-responsive bilayer hydrogels is proposed. The deformation mechanism relies on shrinkage anisotropy between two layers in lactate sodium solution and ultraviolet. The 4D shape-morphing hydrogel can adapt to intestinal curvature for enteroatmospheric fistula closure.
