Abstract
OBJECTIVES Customization and the production of patient-specific devices, tailoring the unique anatomy of each patient's jaw and facial structures, are the new frontiers in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. As a technological advancement, additive manufacturing has been applied to produce customized objects based on 3D computerized models. Therefore, this paper presents advances in additive manufacturing strategies for patient-specific devices in diverse dental specialties. METHODS This paper overviews current 3D printing techniques to fabricate dental and maxillofacial devices. Then, the most recent literature (2018-2023) available in scientific databases reporting advances in 3D-printed patient-specific devices for dental and maxillofacial applications is critically discussed, focusing on the major outcomes, material-related details, and potential clinical advantages. RESULTS The recent application of 3D-printed customized devices in oral prosthodontics, implantology and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics are presented. Moreover, the potential application of 4D printing as an advanced manufacturing technology and the challenges and future perspectives for additive manufacturing in the dental and maxillofacial area are reported. SIGNIFICANCE Additive manufacturing techniques have been designed to benefit several areas of dentistry, and the technologies, materials, and devices continue to be optimized. Image-based and accurately printed patient-specific devices to replace, repair, and regenerate dental and maxillofacial structures hold significant potential to maximize the standard of care in dentistry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exosomes are extracellular vesicles in the range of 40-150 nm released from the cell membrane. Exosomes secreted by keratinocytes can communicate with other keratinocytes and immune cells with specific biomarkers at their surface, which may be effective on inflammation of psoriasis and its pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to formulate and study effectiveness of an exosomal delivery system of tofacitinib (TFC). METHODS TFC was loaded by different methods in exosomes and then characterized for particle size, zeta potential, drug loading efficiency, and release efficiency. By comparing these parameters, the probe sonication method was chosen to load TFC into exosomes. The MTT assay was used to compare the cytotoxicity of the free drug with the TFC-loaded exosomes (TFC-Exo), and Real-time PCR was used to determine the expression levels of several genes involved in psoriasis expressed in the A-431 keratinocyte and their suppression after treatment. Animal model of psoriasis was induced in BALB/c mice by imiquimod and the efficacy of free TFC, and TFC-Exo were studies on macroscopic appearance and histopathological symptoms. RESULTS Exosomes encapsulating TFC showed lower cytotoxicity in MTT assay, higher suppression the expression of TNF-a, IL-23, IL-6, and IL-15 genes in real-time PCR and better therapeutic effect on animal models compered to free TFC. CONCLUSIONS This method of drug delivery for TFC may be effective on enhancing its therapeutic effects and reduction its side effects favorably in chronic administration.

Abstract
Both 2D and 3D re-entrant designs are among the well-known prevalent auxetic structures exhibiting negative Poisson's ratio. The present study introduces novel analytical relationships for 2D re-entrant hexagonal honeycombs for both negative and positive ranges of the cell interior angle θ (θ<0 showing a negative Poisson's ratio). The derived analytical solutions are validated against finite element method (FEM) and experimental results. The results show that, compared to the analytical solutions available in the literature, the analytical relationships presented in this study provide the most accurate results for elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and yield stress. The analytical/computational tools are then implemented for designing Kinesio taping (KT) structures applicable to treatment of Achilles tendon injuries. One of the main features of the Achilles tendon is a natural auxetic behavior. Poisson's ratio distribution of an Achilles tendon is obtained using longitudinal and transverse strains and are then used to design and 3D print thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) KT structures with non-uniform distribution of auxetic unit cells. The presented novel KT shows that it is capable of replicating the deformation and global and local Poisson's ratio distributions, similar to those of the Achilles tendon. Due to the absence of similar formulations and procedures in the literature, the results are expected to be instrumental for designing and 3D printing of flexible implants with unusual auxeticity.

Abstract
Cancer is a critical cause of global human death. Not only are complex approaches to cancer prognosis, accurate diagnosis, and efficient therapeutics concerned, but post-treatments like postsurgical or chemotherapeutical effects are also followed up. The four-dimensional (4D) printing technique has gained attention for its potential applications in cancer therapeutics. It is the next generation of the three-dimensional (3D) printing technique, which facilitates the advanced fabrication of dynamic constructs like programmable shapes, controllable locomotion, and on-demand functions. As is well-known, it is still in the initial stage of cancer applications and requires the insight study of 4D printing. Herein, we present the first effort to report on 4D printing technology in cancer therapeutics. This review will illustrate the mechanisms used to induce the dynamic constructs of 4D printing in cancer management. The recent potential applications of 4D printing in cancer therapeutics will be further detailed, and future perspectives and conclusions will finally be proposed.

Abstract
The use of titanium and titanium-based alloys in the human body due to their resistance to corrosion, implant ology and dentistry has led to significant progress in promoting new technologies. Regarding their excellent mechanical, physical and biological performance, new titanium alloys with non-toxic elements and long-term performance in the human body are described today. The main compositions of Ti-based alloys and properties comparable to existing classical alloys (C.P. TI, Ti-6Al-4V, Co-Cr-Mo, etc.) are used for medical applications. The addition of non-toxic elements such as Mo, Cu, Si, Zr and Mn also provides benefits, such as reducing the modulus of elasticity, increasing corrosion resistance and improving biocompatibility. In the present study, when choosing Ti-9Mo alloy, aluminum and copper (Cu) elements were added to it. These two alloys were chosen because one element is considered a favorable element for the body (copper) and the other element is harmful to the body (aluminum). By adding the copper alloy element to the Ti-9Mo alloy, the elastic modulus decreases to a minimum value of 97 GPa, and the aluminum alloy element increases the elastic modulus up to 118 GPa. Due to their similar properties, Ti-Mo-Cu alloys are found to be a good optional alloy to use.

Abstract
This study aims to develop sunitinib niosomal formulations and assess their in-vitro anti-cancer efficiency against lung cancer cell line, A549. Sunitinib, a highly effective anticancer drug, was loaded in the niosome with high encapsulation efficiency. Collagen was coated on the surface of the niosome for enhanced cellular uptake and prolonged circulation time. Different formulations were produced, while response surface methodology was utilized to optimize the formulations. The stability of the formulations was evaluated over a 2-month period, revealing the importance of collagen coating. MTT assay demonstrated dose-dependent cytotoxicity for all formulations against lung cancer cells. Scratch assay test suggested antiproliferative efficacy of the formulations. The flow cytometry data confirmed the improved cytotoxicity with enhanced apoptosis rate when different formulations used. The 2D fluorescent images proved the presence of drug-containing niosomes in the tumor cells. The activation of the apoptotic pathway leading to protein synthesis was confirmed using an ELISA assay, which specifically evaluated the presence of cas3 and cas7. The results of this study indicated the antiproliferative efficacy of optimized niosomal formulations and their mechanism of action. Therefore, niosomes could be utilized as a suitable carrier for delivering sunitinib into lung cancer cells, paving the way for future clinical studies.

Abstract
Many biological systems are made to operate more quickly, efficiently, and with more power by storing elastic energy. This work introduces a straightforward bioinspired design for the quick manufacture of pre-stressed soft magnetic actuators. The actuator requires a lower magnetic field strength to be activated and can regain its original shape without the need for external stimuli. These characteristics are demonstrated in this work through the creation of actuators with round and helical shape structures inspired by the tendril plant and chameleon's tongue. Both the final form of the actuator and its actuation sequence may be programmed by controlling the direction and strength of the force utilised to pre-stress the elastomeric layer. Analytical models are presented to trace the actuators' energy storage, radius, and pitch. High-speed shape recovery after releasing the magnetic force and a strong grasping force are achieved due to the stored mechanical elastic energy. Experiments are conducted to analyse the shape changes, grasping action, and determine the actuation force. The manufacture of the grippers with zero-magnetic field strength holding capacities of up to 20 times their weight is made possible by the elastic energy that actuators store in their pre-stressed elastomeric layer. The outcomes of our research show that a unique magnetic field-controlled soft actuator can be created in different shapes and designs based on requirements.

Abstract
Laminar jamming (LJ) technology is a hot topic because it allows for the transition from conventionally quick, precise, and high-force rigid robots to flexible, agile, and secure soft robots. This article introduces a novel conceptual design of meta-laminar jamming (MLJ) actuators with a polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP)-based meta-structure fabricated by 4D printing (4DP). The sustainable MLJ actuators behave as soft/hard robots via hot and cold programming accompanied by negative air pressure. The advantage of MLJ actuators over conventional LJ actuators is that a continuous negative air pressure is not required to stimulate the actuator. SMP meta-structures with circle, rectangle, diamond, and auxetic shapes are 4D printed. Mechanical properties of the structures are evaluated through three-point bending and compression tests. Shape memory effects (SMEs) and shape recovery of meta-structures and MLJ actuators are investigated via hot air programming. MLJ actuators with auxetic meta-structure cores show a better performance in terms of contraction and bending with 100% shape recovery after stimulation. The sustainable MLJ actuators have the capabilities of shape recovery and shape locking with zero input power while holding 200 g weight. The actuator can easily lift and hold objects of varying weights and shapes without requiring any power input. This actuator has demonstrated its versatility in potential applications, such as functioning as an end-effector and a gripper device.

Abstract
Skin wounds have imposed serious socioeconomic burdens on healthcare providers and patients. There are just more than 25,000 burn injury-related deaths reported each year. Conventional treatments do not often allow the re-establishment of the function of affected regions and structures, resulting in dehydration and wound infections. Many nanocarriers, such as lipid-based systems or biobased and biodegradable polymers and their associated platforms, are favorable in wound healing due to their ability to promote cell adhesion and migration, thus improving wound healing and reducing scarring. Hence, many researchers have focused on developing new wound dressings based on such compounds with desirable effects. However, when applied in wound healing, some problems occur, such as the high cost of public health, novel treatments emphasizing reduced healthcare costs, and increasing quality of treatment outcomes. The integrated hybrid systems of lipid-based nanocarriers (LNCs) and polymer-based systems can be promising as the solution for the above problems in the wound healing process. Furthermore, novel drug delivery systems showed more effective release of therapeutic agents, suitable mimicking of the physiological environment, and improvement in the function of the single system. This review highlights recent advances in lipid-based systems and the role of lipid-based carriers and biodegradable polymers in wound healing.

Abstract
In this study, a new strategy and design for achieving a shape memory effect (SME) and 4D printed two-layer composite structures is unveiled, thanks to fused deposition modeling (FDM) biomaterial printing of commercial filaments, which do not have an SME. We used ABS and PCL as two well-known thermoplastics, and TPU as elastomer filaments that were printed in a two-layer structure. The thermoplastic layer plays the role of constraint for the elastomeric layer. A rubber-to-glass transition of the thermoplastic layer acts as a switching phenomenon that provides the capability of stabilizing the temporary shape, as well as storing the deformation stress for the subsequent recovery of the permanent shape by phase changing the thermoplastic layer in the opposite direction. The results show that ABS-TPU had fixity and recovery ratios above 90%. The PCL-TPU composite structure also demonstrated complete recovery, but its fixity was 77.42%. The difference in the SME of the two composite structures is related to the transition for each thermoplastic and programming temperature. Additionally, in the early cycles, the shape-memory performance decreased, and in the fourth and fifth cycles, it almost stabilized. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs illustrated superior interfacial bonding and part integrity in the case of multi-material 3D printing.

Abstract
Background Additive Manufacturing due to its benefits in developing parts with complex geometries and shapes, has evolved as an alternate manufacturing process to develop implants with desired properties. The structure of human bones being anisotropic in nature is biologically functionally graded i,e. The structure possesses different properties in different directions. Therefore, various orthopedic implants such as knee, hip and other bone plates, if functionally graded can perform better. In this context, the development of functionally graded (FG) parts for orthopedic application with tailored anisotropic properties has become easier through the use of additive manufacturing (AM). Objectives and Rationale: The current paper aims to study the various aspects of additively manufactured FG parts for orthopedic applications. It presents the details of various orthopedic implants such as knee, hip and other bone plates in a structured manner. A systematic literature review is conducted to study the various material and functional aspects of functionally graded parts for orthopedic applications. A section is also dedicated to discuss the mechanical properties of functionally graded parts. Conclusion The literature revealed that additive manufacturing can provide lot of opportunities for development of functionally graded orthopedic implants with improved properties and durability. Further, the effect of various FG parameters on the mechanical behavior of these implants needs to be studied in detail. Also, with the advent of various AM technologies, the functional grading can be achieved by various means e.g. density, porosity, microstructure, composition, etc. By varying the AM parameters. However, the current limitations of cost and material biocompatibility prevent the widespread exploitation of AM technologies for various orthopedic applications.

Abstract
Nature's materials have evolved over time to be able to respond to environmental stimuli by generating complex structures that can change their functions in response to distance, time, and direction of stimuli. A number of technical efforts are currently being made to improve printing resolution, shape fidelity, and printing speed to mimic the structural design of natural materials with three-dimensional (3D) printing. Unfortunately, this technology is limited by the fact that printed objects are static and cannot be reshaped dynamically in response to stimuli. In recent years, several smart materials have been developed that can undergo dynamic morphing in response to a stimulus, thus resolving this issue. Four-dimensional (4D) printing refers to a manufacturing process involving additive manufacturing, smart materials, and specific geometries. It has become an essential technology for biomedical engineering and has the potential to create a wide range of useful biomedical products. This paper will discuss the concept of 4D bioprinting and the recent developments in smart matrials, which can be actuated by different stimuli and be exploited to develop biomimetic materials and structures, with significant implications for pharmaceutics and biomedical research, as well as prospects for the future.

Abstract
Soft robotic modules have potential use for therapeutic and educational purposes. To do so, they need to be safe, soft, smart, and customizable to serve individuals' different preferences and personalities. A safe modular robotic product made of soft materials, particularly silicon, programmed by artificial intelligence algorithms and developed via additive manufacturing would be promising. This study focuses on the safe tactile interaction between humans and robots by means of soft material characteristics for translating physical communication to auditory. The embedded vibratory sensors used to stimulate touch senses transmitted through soft materials are presented. The soft module was developed and verified successfully to react to three different patterns of human-robot contact, particularly users' touches, and then communicate the type of contact with sound. The study develops and verifies a model that can classify different tactile gestures via machine learning algorithms for safe human-robot physical interaction. The system accurately recognizes the gestures and shapes of three-dimensional (3D) printed soft modules. The gestures used for the experiment are the three most common, including slapping, squeezing, and tickling. The model builds on the concept of how safe human-robot physical interactions could help with cognitive and behavioral communication. In this context, the ability to measure, classify, and reflect the behavior of soft materials in robotic modules represents a prerequisite for endowing robotic materials in additive manufacturing for safe interaction with humans.

Abstract
PURPOSE Atherosclerosis plays a significant role in the initiation of coronary artery aneurysms (CAA). Although the treatment options for this kind of vascular disease are developing, there are challenges and limitations in both selecting and applying sufficient medical solutions. For surgical interventions, that are novel therapies, non-invasive specific patient-based studies could lead to obtaining more promising results. Despite medical and pathological tests, these pre-surgical investigations require special biomedical and computer-aided engineering techniques. In this study, a machine learning (ML) model is proposed for the non-invasive detection of atherosclerotic CAA for the first time. METHODS The database for study was collected from hemodynamic analysis and computed tomography angiography (CTA) of 80 CAAs from 61 patients, approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The proposed ML model is formulated for learning by a one-class support vector machine (1SVM) that is a field of ML to provide techniques for outlier and anomaly detection. RESULTS The applied ML algorithms yield reasonable results with high and significant accuracy in designing a procedure for the non-invasive diagnosis of atherosclerotic aneurysms. This proposed method could be employed as a unique artificial intelligence (AI) tool for assurance in clinical decision-making procedures for surgical intervention treatment methods in the future. CONCLUSIONS The non-invasive diagnosis of the atherosclerotic CAAs, which is one of the vital factors in the accomplishment of endovascular surgeries, is important due to some clinical decisions. Although there is no accurate tool for managing this kind of diagnosis, an ML model that can decrease the probability of endovascular surgical failures, death risk, and post-operational complications is proposed in this study. The model is able to increase the clinical decision accuracy for low-risk selection of treatment options.

Abstract
The biomechanical and hemodynamic effects of atherosclerosis on the initiation of intracranial aneurysms (IA) are not yet clearly discovered. Also, studies for the observation of hemodynamic variation due to atherosclerotic stenosis and its impact on arterial remodeling and aneurysm genesis remain a controversial field of vascular engineering. The majority of studies performed are relevant to computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. CFD studies are limited in consideration of blood and arterial tissue interactions. In this work, the interaction of the blood and vessel tissue because of atherosclerotic occlusions is studied by developing a fluid and structure interaction (FSI) analysis for the first time. The FSI presents a semi-realistic simulation environment to observe how the blood and vessels' structural interactions can increase the accuracy of the biomechanical study results. In the first step, many different intracranial vessels are modeled for an investigation of the biomechanical and hemodynamic effects of atherosclerosis in arterial tissue remodeling. Three physiological conditions of an intact artery, the artery with intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS), and an atherosclerotic aneurysm (ACA) are employed in the models with required assumptions. Finally, the obtained outputs are studied with comparative and statistical analyses according to the intact model in a normal physiological condition. The results show that existing occlusions in the cross-sectional area of the arteries play a determinative role in changing the hemodynamic behavior of the arterial segments. The undesirable variations in blood velocity and pressure throughout the vessels increase the risk of arterial tissue remodeling and aneurysm formation.

Abstract
The aim of this paper was to design and fabricate a novel composite scaffold based on the combination of 3D-printed PLA-based triply minimal surface structures (TPMS) and cell-laden alginate hydrogel. This novel scaffold improves the low mechanical properties of alginate hydrogel and can also provide a scaffold with a suitable pore size, which can be used in bone regeneration applications. In this regard, an implicit function was used to generate some Gyroid TPMS scaffolds. Then the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process was employed to print the scaffolds. Moreover, the micro-CT technique was employed to assess the microstructure of 3D-printed TPMS scaffolds and obtain the real geometries of printed scaffolds. The mechanical properties of composite scaffolds were investigated under compression tests experimentally. It was shown that different mechanical behaviors could be obtained for different implicit function parameters. In this research, to assess the mechanical behavior of printed scaffolds in terms of the strain-stress curves on, two approaches were presented: equivalent volume and finite element-based volume. Results of strain-stress curves showed that the finite-element based approach predicts a higher level of stress. Moreover, the biological response of composite scaffolds in terms of cell viability, cell proliferation, and cell attachment was investigated. In this vein, a dynamic cell culture system was designed and fabricated, which improves mass transport through the composite scaffolds and applies mechanical loading to the cells, which helps cell proliferation. Moreover, the results of the novel composite scaffolds were compared to those without Alginate, and it was shown that the composite scaffold could create more viability and cell proliferation in both dynamic and static cultures. Also, it was shown that scaffolds in dynamic cell culture have a better biological response than in static culture. In addition, Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the cell adhesion on the composite scaffolds, which showed excellent attachment between the scaffolds and cells.

Abstract
Tissue engineering, whose aim is to repair or replace damaged tissues by combining the principle of biomaterials and cell transplantation, is one of the most important and interdisciplinary fields of regenerative medicine. Despite remarkable progress, there are still some limitations in the tissue engineering field, among which designing and manufacturing suitable scaffolds. With the advent of additive manufacturing (AM), a breakthrough happened in the production of complex geometries. In this vein, AM has enhanced the field of bioprinting in generating biomimicking organs or artificial tissues possessing the required porous graded structure. In this study, triply periodic minimal surface structures, suitable to manufacture scaffolds mimicking bone’s heterogeneous nature, have been studied experimentally and numerically; the influence of the printing direction and printing material has been investigated. Various multi-morphology scaffolds, including gyroid, diamond, and I-graph and wrapped package graph (I-WP), with different transitional zone, have been three-dimensional (3D) printed and tested under compression. Further, a micro-computed tomography (μCT) analysis has been employed to obtain the real geometry of printed scaffolds. Finite element analyses have been also performed and compared with experimental results. Finally, the scaffolds’ behavior under complex loading has been investigated based on the combination of μCT and finite element modeling.

Abstract
The bio-inspired structure (e.g., honeycomb) has been studied for its ability to absorb energy and its high strength. The cell size and wall thickness are the main elements that alter the structural ability to withstand load and pressure. Moreover, adding a secondary structure can increase the compressive strength and energy absorption (EA) capability. In this study, the bio-inspired structures are fabricated by fused deposition modelling (FDM) technology using polylactic acid (PLA) material. Samples are printed in the shape of a honeycomb structure, and a starfish shape is used as its reinforcement. Hence, this study focuses on the compression strength and EA of different cell sizes of 20 and 30 mm with different wall thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 mm. Subsequently, the deformation and failure of the structures are determined under the compression loading. It is found that the smaller cell size with smaller wall thickness offered a crush efficiency of 69% as compared to their larger cell size with thicker wall thickness counterparts. It is observed that for a 20 mm cell size, the EA and maximum peak load increase, respectively, when the wall thickness increases. It can be concluded that the compression strength and EA capability increase gradually as the cell size and wall thickness increase.

Abstract
In this paper, a thermo-mechanical analysis of shape memory polyurethane foams (SMPUFs) with aiding of a finite element model (FEM) for treating cerebral aneurysms (CAs) is introduced. Since the deformation of foam cells is extremely difficult to observe experimentally due to their small size, a structural cell-assembly model is established in this work via finite element modeling to examine all-level deformation details. Representative volume elements of random equilateral Kelvin open-cell microstructures are adopted for the cell foam. Also, a user-defined material subroutine (UMAT) is developed based on a thermo-visco-elastic constitutive model for SMPUFs, and implemented in the ABAQUS software package. The model is able to capture thermo-mechanical responses of SMPUFs for a full shape memory thermodynamic cycle. One of the latest treatments of CAs is filling the inside of aneurysms with SMPUFs. The developed FEM is conducted on patient-specific basilar aneurysms treated by SMPUFs. Three sizes of foams are selected for the filling inside of the aneurysm and then governing boundary conditions and loadings are applied to the foams. The results of the distribution of stress and displacement in the absence and presence of the foam are compared. Due to the absence of similar results in the specialized literature, this paper is likely to fill a gap in the state of the art of this problem and provide pertinent results that are instrumental in the design of SMPUFs for treating CAs.

Abstract
This study introduces a design procedure for improving an individual’s footwear comfort with body weight index and activity requirements by customized three-dimensional (3D)-printed shoe midsole lattice structure. This method guides the selection of customized 3D-printed fabrications incorporating both physical and geometrical properties that meet user demands. The analysis of the lattice effects on minimizing the stress on plantar pressure was performed by initially creating various shoe midsole lattice structures designed. An appropriate common 3D printable material was selected along with validating its viscoelastic properties using finite element analysis. The lattice structure designs were analyzed under various loading conditions to investigate the suitability of the method in fabricating a customized 3D-printed shoe midsole based on the individual’s specifications using a single material with minimum cost, time, and material use.

Abstract
In recent years, smart/stimuli-responsive hydrogels have drawn tremendous attention for their varied applications, mainly in the biomedical field. These hydrogels are derived from different natural and synthetic polymers but are also composite with various organic and nano-organic fillers. The basic functions of smart hydrogels rely on their ability to change behavior; functions include mechanical, swelling, shaping, hydrophilicity, and bioactivity in response to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, magnetic field, electromagnetic radiation, and biological molecules. Depending on the final applications, smart hydrogels can be processed in different geometries and modalities to meet the complicated situations in biological media, namely, injectable hydrogels (following the sol-gel transition), colloidal nano and microgels, and three dimensional (3D) printed gel constructs. In recent decades smart hydrogels have opened a new horizon for scientists to fabricate biomimetic customized biomaterials for tissue engineering, cancer therapy, wound dressing, soft robotic actuators, and controlled release of bioactive substances/drugs. Remarkably, 4D bioprinting, a newly emerged technology/concept, aims to rationally design 3D patterned biological matrices from synthesized hydrogel-based inks with the ability to change structure under stimuli. This technology has enlarged the applicability of engineered smart hydrogels and hydrogel composites in biomedical fields. This paper aims to review stimuli-responsive hydrogels according to the kinds of external changes and t recent applications in biomedical and 4D bioprinting.

Abstract
The material for bone scaffold replacement should be biocompatible and antibacterial to prevent scaffold-associated infection. We biofunctionalized the hydroxyapatite (HA) properties by doping it with lithium (Li). The HA and 4 Li-doped HA (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 wt.%) samples were investigated to find the most suitable Li content for both aspects. The synthesized nanoparticles, by the mechanical alloying method, were cold-pressed uniaxially and then sintered for 2 h at 1250 °C. Characterization using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed particle sizes in the range of 60 to 120 nm. The XRD analysis proved the formation of HA and Li-doped HA nanoparticles with crystal sizes ranging from 59 to 89 nm. The bioactivity of samples was investigated in simulated body fluid (SBF), and the growth of apatite formed on surfaces was evaluated using SEM and EDS. Cellular behavior was estimated by MG63 osteoblast-like cells. The results of apatite growth and cell analysis showed that 1.0 wt.% Li doping was optimal to maximize the bioactivity of HA. Antibacterial characteristics against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were performed by colony-forming unit (CFU) tests. The results showed that Li in the structure of HA increases its antibacterial properties. HA biofunctionalized by Li doping can be considered a suitable option for the fabrication of bone scaffolds due to its antibacterial and unique bioactivity properties.

Abstract
A compliant three-dimensional (3D)-printed soft gripper is designed based on the bioinspired spiral spring in this study. The soft gripper is then 3D-printed using a suitable thermoplastic filament material to deliver the desired performance. The sensorless mechanism introduced in this study provides adequate compliance with a single linear actuator for interacting with delicate objects, such as manipulation of human biological materials and fruit picking. The kinematic and dynamic models of the monolithic gripper are derived analytically as well as by means of finite element analysis to synthesize its functionality. The fabricated gripper module is installed on a robot arm to demonstrate the efficacy of design for picking and placing fruits without damaging them. The presented mechanism could be customized and used in the medical and agricultural sectors with diverse geometry objects.

Abstract
One of tissue engineering's main goals is to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds with interconnected pores to reconstruct and regenerate damaged or deformed tissues and organs. In this regard, 3D printing is a promising technique for the fabrication of tissue scaffolds, which can precisely make predetermined and complicated architectures. This study aims to investigate and optimize the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of 3D truss architecture tissue scaffolds with different pore geometries. The mechanical properties of poly (methyl methacrylate) scaffolds are analysed experimentally and numerically. Furthermore, the mechanical and physical properties of scaffolds are optimized with response surface methodology (RSM), and cell adhesion of the 3D truss scaffold studies. Results demonstrate that mechanical properties of the simple and gradient scaffolds have different mechanical behaviors that are strongly correlated with pore size and their architectures, rather than merely the values of the porosity. It is also observed that the RSM technique can enable designers to enhance mechanical and physical properties of scaffolds at low cost. Moreover, the results of biological behaviour can endorse the reliability of 3D truss architecture in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Mechanical metamaterials are man-made rationally-designed structures that present unprecedented mechanical properties not found in nature. One of the most well-known mechanical metamaterials is auxetics, which demonstrates negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) behavior that is very beneficial in several industrial applications. In this study, a specific type of auxetic metamaterial structure namely idealized 3D re-entrant structure is studied analytically, numerically, and experimentally. The noted structure is constructed of three types of struts-one loaded purely axially and two loaded simultaneously flexurally and axially, which are inclined and are spatially defined by angles θ and φ. Analytical relationships for elastic modulus, yield stress, and Poisson's ratio of the 3D re-entrant unit cell are derived based on two well-known beam theories namely Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko. Moreover, two finite element approaches one based on beam elements and one based on volumetric elements are implemented. Furthermore, several specimens are additively manufactured (3D printed) and tested under compression. The analytical results had good agreement with the experimental results on the one hand and the volumetric finite element model results on the other hand. Moreover, the effect of various geometrical parameters on the mechanical properties of the structure was studied, and the results demonstrated that angle θ (related to tension-dominated struts) has the highest influence on the sign of Poisson's ratio and its extent, while angle φ (related to compression-dominated struts) has the lowest influence on the Poisson's ratio. Nevertheless, the compression-dominated struts (defined by angle φ) provide strength and stiffness for the structure. The results also demonstrated that the structure could have zero Poisson's ratio for a specific range of θ and φ angles. Finally, a lightened 3D re-entrant structure is introduced, and its results are compared to those of the idealized 3D re-entrant structure.

Abstract
Stress shielding and micromotions are the most significant problems occurring at the bone-implants interface due to a mismatch of their mechanical properties. Mechanical 3D metamaterials, with their exceptional behaviour and characteristics, can provide an opportunity to solve the mismatch of mechanical properties between the bone and implant. In this study, a new porous femoral hip meta-implant with graded Poisson's ratio distribution was introduced and its results were compared to three other femoral hip implants (one solid implant, and two porous meta-implants, one with positive and the other with a negative distribution of Poisson's ratio) in terms of stress and micromotion distributions. For this aim, first, a well-known auxetic 3D re-entrant structure was studied analytically, and precise closed-form analytical relationships for its elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were derived. The results of the analytical solution for mechanical properties of the 3D re-entrant structure presented great improvements in comparison to previous analytical studies on the structure. Moreover, the implementation of the re-entrant structure in the hip implant provided very smooth results for stress and strain distributions in the lattice meta-implants and could solve the stress shielding problem which occurred in the solid implant. The lattice meta-implant based on the graded unit cell distribution presented smoother stress-strain distribution in comparison with the other lattice meta-implants. Moreover, the graded lattice meta-implant gave minimum areas of local stress and local strain concentration at the contact region of the implants with the internal bone surfaces. Among all the cases, the graded meta-implant also gave micromotion levels which are the closest to values reported to be desirable for bone growth (40 µm).

Abstract
Recently, there has been a proliferation of soft robots and actuators that exhibit improved capabilities and adaptability through three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. Flexibility and shape recovery attributes of stimuli-responsive polymers as the main components in the production of these dynamic structures enable soft manipulations in fragile environments, with potential applications in biomedical and food sectors. Topology optimization (TO), when used in conjunction with 3D bioprinting with optimal design features, offers new capabilities for efficient performance in compliant mechanisms. In this paper, multimaterial TO analysis is used to improve and control the bending performance of a bioprinted soft actuator with electrolytic stimulation. The multimaterial actuator performance is evaluated by the amplitude and rate of bending motion and compared with the single material printed actuator. The results demonstrated the efficacy of multimaterial 3D bioprinting optimization for the rate of actuation and bending.

Abstract
Despite the frequency of mallet finger injuries, treatment options can often be costly, time-consuming, and ill-fitted. Three-dimensional (3D) printing allows for the production of highly customized and inexpensive splints, which suggests potential efficacy in the prescription of casts for musculoskeletal injuries. This study explores how the use of engineering concepts such as 3D printing and topology optimization (TO) can improve outcomes for patients. 3D printing enables the direct fabrication of the patient-specific complex shapes while utilizing finite element analysis and TO in the design of the splint allowed for the most efficient distribution of material to achieve mechanical requirements while reducing the amount of material used. The reduction in used material leads to significant improvements in weight reduction and heat dissipation, which would improve breathability and less sweating for the patient, greatly increasing comfort for the duration of their recovery.

Abstract
In this paper, the post-processing of 3D-printed poly lactic acid (PLA) parts is investigated. Workpieces are manufactured by fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing, while they may have defects in some areas such as edges. A post-processing is introduced here for 3D-printed samples by low power CO2 laser. The thickness of the FDM samples are 3.2 mm and printed by optimum conditions. Effects of process parameters such as focal plane position (-3.2-3.2 mm), laser power (20-40 W), and laser cutting speed (1-13 mm/s) are examined based on the design of experiments (DOE). Geometrical features of the kerf; top and bottom kerf; taper; ratio of top to the bottom kerf are considered as output responses. An analysis of the experimental results by statistical software is conducted to survey the effects of process parameters and to obtain regression equations. By optimizing of the laser cutting process; an appropriate kerf quality is obtained and also optimum input parameters are suggested. Experimental verification tests show a good agreement between empirical results and statistical predictions. The best optimum sample with 1.19 mm/s cutting speed, 36.49 W power and 0.53 mm focal plane position shows excellent physical features after the laser cutting process when 276.9 μm top and 261.5 μm bottom kerf width is cut by laser.

Abstract
Dielectric actuators (DEAs), because of their exceptional properties, are well-suited for soft actuators (or robotics) applications. This article studies a multi-stimuli thermo-dielectric-based soft actuator under large bending conditions. In order to determine the stress components and induced moment (or stretches), a nominal Helmholtz free energy density function with two types of hyperelastic models are employed. Non-linear electro-elasticity theory is adopted to derive the governing equations of the actuator. Total deformation gradient tensor is multiplicatively decomposed into electro-mechanical and thermal parts. The problem is solved using the second-order Runge-Kutta method. Then, the numerical results under thermo-mechanical loadings are validated against the finite element method (FEM) outcomes by developing a user-defined subroutine, UHYPER in a commercial FEM software. The effect of electric field and thermal stimulus are investigated on the mean radius of curvature and stresses distribution of the actuator. Results reveal that in the presence of electric field, the required moment to actuate the actuator is smaller. Finally, due to simplicity and accuracy of the present boundary problem, the proposed thermally-electrically actuator is expected to be used in future studies and 4D printing of artificial thermo-dielectric-based beam muscles.

Abstract
Modeling and analyzing the sports equipment for injury prevention, reduction in cost, and performance enhancement have gained considerable attention in the sports engineering community. In this regard, the structure study of on-water sports board (surfboard, kiteboard, and skimboard) is vital due to its close relation with environmental and human health as well as performance and safety of the board. The aim of this paper is to advance the on-water sports board through various bio-inspired core structure designs such as honeycomb, spiderweb, pinecone, and carbon atom configuration fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. Fused deposition modeling was employed to fabricate complex structures from polylactic acid (PLA) materials. A 3D-printed sample board with a uniform honeycomb structure was designed, 3D printed, and tested under three-point bending conditions. A geometrically linear analytical method was developed for the honeycomb core structure using the energy method and considering the equivalent section for honeycombs. A geometrically non-linear finite element method based on the ABAQUS software was also employed to simulate the boards with various core designs. Experiments were conducted to verify the analytical and numerical results. After validation, various patterns were simulated, and it was found that bio-inspired functionally graded honeycomb structure had the best bending performance. Due to the absence of similar designs and results in the literature, this paper is expected to advance the state of the art of on-water sports boards and provide designers with structures that could enhance the performance of sports equipment.

Abstract
Miniature electromechanical systems form a class of bioMEMS that can provide appropriate sensitivity. In this research, a thermo-electro-mechanical model is presented to detect biological particles in the microscale. Identification in the model is based on analyzing pull-in instability parameters and frequency shifts. Here, governing equations are derived via the extended Hamilton’s principle. The coupled effects of system parameters such as surface layer energy, electric field correction, and material properties are incorporated in this thermosensitive model. Afterward, the accuracy of the present model and obtained results are validated with experimental, analytical, and numerical data for several cases. Performing a parametric study reveals that mechanical properties of biosensors can significantly affect the detection sensitivity of actuated ultra-small detectors and should be taken into account. Furthermore, it is shown that the number or dimension of deposited particles on the sensing zone can be estimated by investigating the changes in the threshold voltage, electrode deflection, and frequency shifts. The present analysis is likely to provide pertinent guidelines to design thermal switches and miniature detectors with the desired performance. The developed biosensor is more appropriate to detect and characterize viruses in samples with different temperatures.

Abstract
We examined the therapeutic effects of albendazole compared to metronidazole in 120 patients with giardiasis in Hamdan. Patients were randomized to receive albendazole (400 mg, once daily for 5 days) or metronidazole (250 mg, 3 times a day for 5 days). Demographic data of the patients, results of stool examination for Giardia trophozoites before and after treatment, and drug side-effects were recorded. After treatment 6 (10.0%) of the albendazole group had trophozoites compared with 14 (23.3%) of metronidazole group (P < 0.05). Patients in the albendazole group had fewer side-effects while 43.3% of the metronidazole group experienced a metallic taste and 35.0% experienced loss of appetite. Albendazole is an easy, safe and effective treatment for giardiasis.
