Abstract
Although Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia duodenalis and some Eimeria species are frequently involved in neonatal calf diarrhoea (NCD), detailed studies on their interactions are scarce. Therefore, a cross-sectional study including faecal samples from 404 diarrhoeic calves aged 0-30 days was performed. Cryptosporidium oocysts and G. duodenalis cysts were detected by immunofluorescence antibody test and positive samples were molecularly characterized. Eimeria oocysts were microscopically detected using the modified McMaster technique and morphometric species identification was performed. Cryptosporidium infections (53.7%) predominated over those by G. duodenalis (12.4%) and Eimeria spp. (6.9%). Three Cryptosporidium species were identified: C. parvum (98.0%), C. bovis (1.0%) and C. ryanae (1.0%). Eleven C. parvum zoonotic subtypes were detected, with IIaA15G2R1 as the most common; only G. duodenalis assemblage E was identified. Moreover, 10 Eimeria species were found, being Eimeria ellipsoidalis (96.4%), Eimeria bovis (85.7%), and Eimeria zuernii (71.4%) predominant. A significant positive association between G. duodenalis and Eimeria spp. was detected as well as a negative association between C. parvum and Eimeria spp. Our results showed that C. parvum wasprevalent in diarrhoeic calves under 21 days of life; Eimeria spp. and G. duodenalis were especially common in animals in their fourth week of life. Concurrent infections increased with age. Moreover, the study also revealed potential public health risks since a noticeable percentage of animals were infected with C. parvum zoonotic subtypes. Further studies are needed for determining the role of these parasites in co-infections with other enteropathogens and their implications in the pathogenicity of NCD.

Abstract
Background and Aim Giardia intestinalis is one of the most prevalent intestinal parasites in humans and animals, and children in close contact with livestock are particularly at risk of infection. This study aimed to detect assemblages of G. intestinalis and determine the origin of zoonotic transmission of Giardia in children and calves in different parts of Babylon province, Iraq. Materials and Methods One hundred stool samples from children (68 boys and 32 girls) and 100 fecal samples from calves (46 males and 54 females) of different ages were randomly collected. Molecular techniques were used to estimate the prevalence of G. intestinalis in children and calves. A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed by targeting the triose phosphate isomerase gene in the samples to detect G. intestinalis assemblages. Results The overall rates of infection with G. intestinalis in children and calves were 21% and 34%, respectively, using the conventional microscopic method. The results illustrated that 61.90% (13/21) and 38.09% (8/21) of positive samples from children were allocated to assemblages A and B, respectively (p > 0.05). In calves, assemblages A and B were detecte in 82.35% (28/34) and 17.64% (6/34) of positive samples from calves, respectively (p ≤ 0.001). Ten PCR products were sequenced and submitted to the GenBank database. Phylogenetic analysis detected five human sequences each belonging to G. intestinalis assemblages A (OM850335-OM850339) and B (OM850340-OM850344). Similarly, five calf sequences each belonged to G. intestinalis assemblages A (ON75756-ON757660) and B (ON757661-ON757665). Conclusion The detection of large numbers of G. intestinalis assemblage A in both humans and cattle indicated that cattle could be a main source of zoonotic G. intestinalis infection in children in Babylon province, Iraq.

Abstract
The genus Giardia is a unicellular protozoan able to parasitize both humans and animals. Cysts of Giardia can be found in soil samples, aquatic environments, food, and any surface that gets in contact with the feces of parasitized animals. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the burden and epidemiology of Giardia infection in Colombia summarizing recent scientific reports and existing knowledge and to identify knowledge gaps that may be addressed in future investigations. This work follows the guidelines established by "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes" (PRISMA). Published scientific literature from 1 January 2010 to 18 September 2022 was searched in six electronic scientific databases using the search terms: "Giardia" OR "Giardiasis" AND "Colombia". Twenty-three scientific articles were performed in 22 departments of Colombia at rural, urban, and a combination of rural and urban contexts. The prevalence of Giardia in the Colombian population was between 0.9 and 48.1% when the samples were analyzed with classical microscopy; the range of Giardia prevalence was even bigger (4.2-100%) when qPCR and nested PCR were used. The dominant Giardia assemblages found in Colombia were A and B, and most frequent subassemblages were AII, BIII, and BIV.

Abstract
Giardia is an ubiquitous protozoa that infect a broad range of vertebrate hosts, including domestic and wild animals as well as humans. Giardia duodenalis is one of the most common parasite in humans and mammals worldwide. Human giardiasis is highly prevalent in the countries that make up from Amazon. The identification of genotypes in humans and animals improves the understanding of transmission routes and the control strategies. Thus, we carried out a systematic review on Giardia in animals from Amazon region/South American, following the PRISMA guidelines. Studies up to September, 2022 were searched for in public database. A total of seven out of 432 articles were selected: four, two and one from Brazil, Colombia and Peru, respectively. Based on these articles it is seen that the G. duodenalis cosmopolitan assemblages A and B prevail within domestic and wild animals in the Amazon. Moreover, a Giardia microscopic screening in aquatic animals from this biome showed its prevalence among aquatic mammals including the endangered species Trichechus inunguis (manatee). Therefore, a yet not accessed number of susceptible hosts, new G. duodenalis assemblages and species can be occurring in this huge hotspot of biodiversity that is Amazon region.

Abstract
Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. cause gastrointestinal diseases of zoonotic origin as well transmitted from person to person, being various reported outbreaks associated with water. The infecting (oo)cyst forms of these parasites are highly resistant to water treatments such as chlorine disinfection and fast filtration. The objective of this study was to assess the microbial risk of infection and symptomatic illness by the ingestion of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in water for human consumption in Colombia, based on the results of water quality surveillance. The detection method was according to the USEPA method 1623. Concentration data of the different points of distribution were grouped according to the pathogen and type of treatment (no treatment; chlorine treatment; chlorine treatment + coagulant). Annual microbial risks of infection and symptomatic diseases were estimated using the quantitative microbial risk assessment approach that included parasite concentrations, the dose-response model, the ingestion rates of water by children and adults, and the morbidity rate of the diseases. The mean annual microbial risk of infection for Giardia spp. was 29.8% for treated water and 50.4% for untreated water, while being 6.0% and 17.7%, respectively, for Cryptosporidium spp. Microbial risk of symptomatic illness for Giardia spp, was 8.2% for treated water and 13.9% for untreated water, while being 3.6% and 10.6%, respectively, for Cryptosporidium spp. The estimated annual microbial risks of infection exceeded the acceptable value of 10-4 (0.01%) recommended by USEPA. Results obtained in this study suggest the need to reduce the microbial risk of infection to protozoan parasites by improving the water treatment, by adopting better handling practices for livestock manure and treatment processes of human feces. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The presence of Cryptosporidium spp was identified in 28 (6.2%) samples and Giardia spp in 29 (6.4%) in water for human consumption in Colombia. The mean annual risk of symptomatic illness due to infection by Giardia spp or Cryptosporidium spp ranges from 33.6%, for treated water, to 58.1%, for untreated water. Annual risks ingestion of protozoa studying in water for human exceed of 10-4 (0.01%) recommended by USEPA.

Abstract
Giardia spp. is detected frequently in humans and animals. Although many studies have been conducted on the epidemiology of giardiasis, there is a scarcity of information on the genetic diversity and the dynamics of transmission of Giardia spp. in Vietnam. The zoonotic potential of Giardia spp. remains elusive. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of Giardia spp. in both humans and livestock to assess the existence of a route of infection between livestock and humans. Our goal was to assess the role animals play in the epidemiology of human infection in northern Vietnam. In Hien Khanh commune in northern Vietnam, 311 households with 1508 residents were randomly selected for a diarrheal cohort study. Of these, 2120 human diarrheal samples were collected from 1508 residents in 2014 and 2017. Of these, non-diarrheal samples were cross-sectionally collected from 471 residents. At the same site, livestock samples from buffalo, dairy and beef cattle, pigs, and dogs were collected. All stool samples were examined for Giardia spp. by Direct Immunofluorescence Assay (DFA) using fluorescent microscope. DNA extraction, PCR analysis of the 3 genes (bg, gdh, tpi), and sequencing analysis were continuously carried out. A total of 23 animal stool samples, 8 human non-diarrheal samples, and 36 human diarrheal samples were Giardia spp. were positive by PCR using the bg and gdh genes. Giardia spp. assemblage AII and E were detected in both animal samples and human samples in this study site. The detection of assemblage E in human stool samples suggests the first human case report in Vietnam. We assume that the unexpected human infection of all Giardia assemblages including A, B, and E may be due to an environment contaminated with animal and human feces in this village. Giardia spp. assemblage A and E have been detected in buffalo, cattle and pigs, as well as in humans, while assemblage B appeared only in humans. This was the first report of assemblage E in humans in Vietnam. Zoonotic transmission of assemblage AII and E could not be excluded in our study site. In addition to the ‘animal-to-human’ route, there potentially might be transmission routes from ‘humans-to-humans’ and/or ‘humans-to-animals’ in this study site. The novel genotype belonging to assemblage AIII has been isolated only in buffalo.
