Abstract
Anion exchange polymers (AEPs) play a crucial role in green hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. The chemical stability of AEPs is paramount for stable system operation in electrolysers and other electrochemical devices. Given the instability of aryl ether-containing AEPs under high pH conditions, recent research has focused on quaternized aryl ether-free variants. The primary goal of this review is to provide a greater depth of knowledge on the synthesis of aryl ether-free AEPs targeted for electrochemical devices. Synthetic pathways that yield polyaromatic AEPs include acid-catalysed polyhydroxyalkylation, metal-promoted coupling reactions, ionene synthesis via nucleophilic substitution, alkylation of polybenzimidazole, and Diels-Alder polymerization. Polyolefinic AEPs are prepared through addition polymerization, ring-opening metathesis, radiation grafting reactions, and anionic polymerization. Discussions cover structure-property-performance relationships of AEPs in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and water and CO2 electrolysers, along with the current status of scale-up synthesis and commercialization.

Abstract
Ionomeric binders in catalyst layers, abbreviated as ionomers, play an essential role in the performance of polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cells and electrolyzers. Due to environmental issues associated with perfluoroalkyl substances, alternative hydrocarbon ionomers have drawn substantial attention over the past few years. This review surveys literature to discuss ionomer requirements for the electrodes of fuel cells and electrolyzers, highlighting design principles of hydrocarbon ionomers to guide the development of advanced hydrocarbon ionomers.

Abstract
A quaternized polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane was synthesized by grafting a dimethylimidazolium end-capped side chain onto PBI. The organic-inorganic hybrid membrane of the quaternized PBI was prepared via a silane-induced crosslinking process with triethoxysilylpropyl dimethylimidazolium chloride. The chemical structure and membrane morphology were characterized using NMR, FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDX, AFM, SAXS, and XPS techniques. Compared with the pristine membrane of dimethylimidazolium-functionalized PBI, its hybrid membrane exhibited a lower swelling ratio, higher mechanical strength, and better oxidative stability. However, the morphology of hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation, which facilitates the ion transport along hydrophilic channels, only successfully developed in the pristine membrane. As a result, the hydroxide conductivity of the pristine membrane (5.02 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 80 °C) was measured higher than that of the hybrid membrane (2.22 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 80 °C). The hydroxide conductivity and tensile results suggested that both membranes had good alkaline stability in 2M KOH solution at 80 °C. Furthermore, the maximum power densities of the pristine and hybrid membranes of dimethylimidazolium-functionalized PBI reached 241 mW cm-2 and 152 mW cm-2 at 60 °C, respectively. The fuel cell performance result demonstrates that these two membranes are promising as AEMs for fuel cell applications.

Abstract
To obtain anion exchange membranes with both high ionic conductivity and good dimensional stability, a series of side-chain-type poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (PAES-QDTPM-x) were designed and synthesized. Quaternary ammonium (QA) groups were densely aggregated and grafted onto the main chain via flexible hydrophobic spacers. Well-defined microphase separation was confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. PAES-QDTPM-0.30 exhibited reasonably high conductivity (39.4 mS cm-1 at 20 °C and 76.1 mS cm-1 at 80 °C) and excellent dimensional stability at 80 °C (11.9% in length, 11.2% in thickness) due to the concentration of ion clusters and the side-chain-type structure. All membranes maintained over 82% of the conductivity after alkali treatment for 14 days. In the H2/O2 fuel cell performance test, the maximum power density of PAES-QDTPM-0.30 at 60 °C was 225.8 mW cm-2.

Abstract
In this study, imidazolium brushes tethered by –NH2-containing ligands were grafted onto the surface of a 2D material, MXene, using precipitation polymerization followed by quaternization. Functionalized MXene was embedded into chitosan matrix to prepare a hybrid alkaline anion exchange membrane. Due to high interfacial compatibility, functionalized MXene was homogeneously dispersed in chitosan matrix, generating continuous ion conduction channels and then greatly enhancing OH− conduction property (up to 172%). The ability and mechanism of OH− conduction in the membrane were elaborated based on systematic tests. The mechanical-thermal stability and swelling resistance of the membrane were evidently augmented. Therefore, it is a promising anion exchange membrane for alkaline fuel cell application.

Abstract
To achieve highly conductive and stable anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for fuel cells, novel triblock copolymer AEMs bearing flexible side chain were synthesized. The triblock structure and flexible side chain are responsible for the developed hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separated morphology and well-connected ion conducting channels, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. As a result, the triblock copolymer AEMs with flexible side chain (ABA-TQA- x) demonstrated considerably higher conductivities, up to 130.5 mS cm-1 at 80 °C, than the AEMs with monocation side chain (ABA-MQA). Furthermore, the long alkyl spacer between the backbone and quaternary ammonium groups, as well as long intercation spacer limits the water swelling of the membranes to some degree, resulting in good alkaline stability. The ABA-TQA-44 membrane retained 84.7% and 83.1% of its original conductivity and ionic exchange capacity, respectively, after immersed in a 1 M aqueous KOH solution at 80 °C for 480 h. Furthermore, the peak power density of a H2/O2 single cell using ABA-TQA-44 is 204.6 mW cm-2 at a current density of 500 mA cm-2 at 80 °C.

Abstract
A gemini-type basic morpholine ionic liquid ([Nbmd][OH]) was synthesized via a two-step method with morpholine, bromododecane and 1,4-dibromobutane as raw materials, and its structure was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Meanwhile, a series of anion exchange membranes ([Nbmd][OH] x -QCS) were prepared with quaternized chitosan (QCS) as the polymer matrix and [Nbmd][OH] as the dopant owing to its strong alkalinity and good solubility. The structures of the [Nbmd][OH] x -QCS composite membranes were characterized in detail by FT-IR spectroscopy, the OH- conductivity by AC impedance spectroscopy, and the morphological features by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), etc. The results show that the [Nbmd][OH] x -QCS composite membranes have uniform surfaces and cross-section morphology. Increasing the content of [Nbmd][OH] not only enhances the thermal stability but also increases the OH- conductivity; the thermal decomposition temperature of the [Nbmd][OH]40-QCS membrane is nearly 20 °C higher than that of the pristine QCS membrane, and the maximum OH- conductivity is approximately 1.37 × 10-2 S cm-2 at 70 °C. The methanol permeability of the [Nbmd][OH]40-QCS membrane in 1 M methanol at room temperature is 2.21 × 10-6 cm-2 s-1, which is lower than that of Nafion®115, indicating a promising potential use in alkaline direct methanol fuel cells. Moreover, the [Nbmd][OH]40-QCS membrane exhibits the best alkaline stability of all the membranes prepared in this work, retaining approximately 81% of its initial conductivity after immersion in 3 M KOH solution for 120 h at 70 °C.

Abstract
The incompatibility of the hydrophilic imidazolium cations from the functionalized poly(vinyl imidazole) with the long hydrophobic poly(ether sulfone) chain promoted the phase separation. The PES/PVIIL-0.4 membrane displayed good single cell performance.
