Abstract
The environmental impact of poultry industry waste has led to the study of hydrolysates with potential health-promoting properties obtained from poultry by-products and their fractionation to increase the bioactivity of these hydrolysates. The aim of the present study was to separate a chicken by-product hydrolysate (CBH) by electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membranes (EDUF), providing peptide selective separation based on their charge and molecular weight, and to characterize the resulting fractions. Experimental results showed that during the peptide fractionation process the global peptide migration rate (MR) from CBH was 14.97 ± 0.14 g/m2•h with a relative energy consumption of 31.27 ± 2.61 Wh/g of total peptides. 164 peptides were identified in the initial CBH, and following EDUF, 39 migrated to the positively charged peptide fraction (PCC) and 9 to the negatively charge peptide fraction (NCC): 21 sequences were reported as bioactive for CBH, 6 for PCC and 1 for NCC. Analyses of ACE inhibition evidenced a 1.4 fold increase in antihypertensive activity of the PCC (IC50 0.46 ± 0.04 mg peptides /mL) in comparison to CBH (IC50 0.65 ± 0. 04 mg peptides /mL), despite the smaller number of bioactive sequences reported and the fact that it is possible to enhance the PCC recovery by modifying the EDUF configuration in further studies. These findings highlight the significance of EDUF as a sustainable method for obtaining specifically charged peptide fractions with enhanced bioactivity from the initial hydrolysate.

Abstract
The development of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) affects a large number of people around the world and represents a major issue in the field of health. Thus, it is important to implement new strategies to reduce its prevalence, and various approaches are currently under development. Recently, an eco-friendly technology named electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membrane (EDUF) was used successfully for the first time at a semi-industrial scale to produce three fractions concentrated in bioactive peptides (BPs) from an enzymatically hydrolyzed whey protein concentrate (WPC): the initial (F1), the final (F2) and the recovery fraction (F3), and it was demonstrated in vitro that F3 exhibited interesting DPP-IV inhibitory effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of each fraction on in vivo models of obesity. A daily dose of 312.5 mg/kg was administered to High Fat/High Sucrose diet (HFHS) induced C57BL6/J mice for eight weeks. The physiological parameters of each group and alterations of their gut microbiota by the fractions were assessed. Little effect of the different fractions was demonstrated on the physiological state of the mice, probably due to the digestion process of the BP content. However, there were changes in the gut microbiota composition and functions of mice treated with F3.

Abstract
The separation by electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membranes (EDUF), at a semi-industrial scale, of a new whey protein hydrolysate obtained from a whey protein concentrate was assessed. After 6 h of treatment, more than 9 g of peptides were recovered in the peptide recovery fraction, for a recovery yield of 5.46 ± 0.56% and containing 18 major components. Among these components, positively charged peptides, such as ALPMHIR + PHMIR, LIVTQTMK and TKIPAVF, were present, and their relative abundances increased by nearly 1.25 X and up to 7.55 X. The presence of these peptides may be promising, as ALPMHIR has a strong activity against angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), and LIVTQTMK has structural properties that could interfere with dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV). Many neutral peptides were also recovered alongside those. Nevertheless, the inhibitory activity against DPP-IV and ACE increased from 2 X and 4 X, respectively, in the peptide recovery fraction compared to the initial hydrolysate, due to the improved content in bioactive peptides. Thus, this new hydrolysate is well-suited for the large-scale production of a peptide fraction with high bioactivities. Furthermore, what was achieved in this work came close to what could be achieved for the industrial production of a bioactive peptide fraction from whey proteins.

Abstract
This study examined the behavior and penetration mechanisms of typical phenolic (benzoic) acids, which determine their observed penetration rates during membrane separation, focusing on the influence of electrostatic and hydrophobic solute/membrane interactions. To understand the effects of hydrophobicity and electrostatic interaction on membrane filtration, the observed penetration of five structurally similar phenolic acids was compared with regenerated cellulose (RC) and polyamide (PA) membranes at different solute concentrations and solution pHs. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) was performed to calculate the relative contributions of electrostatic and hydrophobic effects. The penetration of phenolic acids was mainly influenced by the electrostatic interaction, with salicylic acid having the highest penetration. Penetration of phenolic acids through the PA membrane decreased from 98% at pH 3.0 to 30–50% at pH 7.4, indicating the dominance of the electrostatic interaction. Moreover, based on its hydrophobicity and greater surface charge, the PA membrane could separate binary mixtures of protocatechuic/salicylic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic/salicylic acid at pH 9.0, with separation factors of 1.81 and 1.78, respectively. These results provide a greater understanding of solute/membrane interactions and their effect on the penetration of phenolic acids through polymeric ultrafiltration membranes.

Abstract
Electrodialysis (ED) was first established for water desalination and is still highly recommended in this field for its high water recovery, long lifetime and acceptable electricity consumption. Today, thanks to technological progress in ED processes and the emergence of new ion-exchange membranes (IEMs), ED has been extended to many other applications in the food industry. This expansion of uses has also generated several problems such as IEMs' lifetime limitation due to different ageing phenomena (because of organic and/or mineral compounds). The current commercial IEMs show excellent performance in ED processes; however, organic foulants such as proteins, surfactants, polyphenols or other natural organic matters can adhere on their surface (especially when using anion-exchange membranes: AEMs) forming a colloid layer or can infiltrate the membrane matrix, which leads to the increase in electrical resistance, resulting in higher energy consumption, lower water recovery, loss of membrane permselectivity and current efficiency as well as lifetime limitation. If these aspects are not sufficiently controlled and mastered, the use and the efficiency of ED processes will be limited since, it will no longer be competitive or profitable compared to other separation methods. In this work we reviewed a significant amount of recent scientific publications, research and reviews studying the phenomena of IEM fouling during the ED process in food industry with a special focus on the last decade. We first classified the different types of fouling according to the most commonly used classifications. Then, the fouling effects, the characterization methods and techniques as well as the different fouling mechanisms and interactions as well as their influence on IEM matrix and fixed groups were presented, analyzed, discussed and illustrated.

Abstract
Membrane fouling has remained a major challenge limiting the wide application of membrane technology because it reduces the efficiency and shortens the lifespan of the membrane, thus increasing the operation cost. Herein we report a novel dual-function nanocomposite membrane incorporating silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@AgNPs) into a sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membrane for a pervaporation desalination. Compared with the control PVA membrane and PVA/SSA membrane, the Au@AgNPs/PVA/SSA membrane demonstrated a higher water flux and better salt rejection as well as an enhanced antifouling property. More importantly, Au@AgNPs provided an additional function enabling a foulant detection on the membrane surface via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as Au@AgNPs could amplify the Raman signals as an SERS substrate. Distinct SERS spectra given by a fouled membrane helped to distinguish different protein foulants from their characteristic fingerprint peaks. Their fouling tendency on the membrane was also revealed by comparing the SERS intensities of mixed foulants on the membrane surface. The Au@AgNPs/PVA/SSA nanocomposite membrane presented here demonstrated the possibility of a multifunction membrane to achieve both antifouling and fouling detection, which could potentially be used in water treatment.

Abstract
Electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membrane (EDUF) was selected to separate a herring milt hydrolysate (HMH) in a scale-up and long-term study for the recovery of bioactive peptides. The scale-up was performed to maximise peptide recovery by placing a total membrane area of 0.08 m2 for each anionic and cationic compartment. Twelve consecutive runs were carried out, for a total of 69 h, with minimal salt solution cleaning in between experiments. The final peptide migration rate showed that cationic peptides had a higher average migration rate (5.2 ± 0.8 g/m2·h), compared to anionic peptides (4.7 ± 1.1 g/m2·h). Migration was also selective according to peptide identifications and molecular mass distribution where only small molecular weights were found (<1000 Da) in both recovery compartments. The areal system resistance slightly decreased during each run and the averaged values were stable in between experiments since they were all found in the 95% confidence interval. In addition, total relative energy consumption was quite consistent with an average value of 39.95 ± 6.47 Wh/g all along the 12 consecutive runs. Finally, according to membrane characterization, there was no visual fouling on the different membranes present in the EDUF cell after 69 h of treatment. This may be due to the salt cleaning in between experiments which allowed removal of peptides from the membranes, thus allowing recovering initial system working parameters at the beginning of each run. The entire process was revealed to be very consistent and repeatable in terms of peptide migration, global system resistance, and energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such EDUF conditions (membrane surface, duration, and minimal salt cleaning between experiments) are being tested on a complex hydrolysate.

Abstract
Increased demand for highly selective and energy-efficient separations processes has stimulated substantial interest in emerging two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials as a potential platform for next-generation membranes. However, persistently poor separation performance continues to hinder the viability of many novel 2D-nanosheet membranes in desalination applications. In this study, we examine the role of the lamellar structure of 2D membranes on their performance. Using self-fabricated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) membranes as a platform, we show that the separation layer of 2D nanosheet frameworks not only fails to demonstrate water-salt selectivity but also exhibits low rejection toward dye molecules. Moreover, the MoS2 membranes possess a molecular weight cutoff comparable to its underlying porous support, implying negligible selectivity of the MoS2 layer. By tuning the nanochannel size through intercalation with amphiphilic molecules and analyzing mass transport in the lamellar structure using Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal that small imperfections in the stacking of MoS2 nanosheets result in the formation of catastrophic microporous defects. These defects lead to a precipitous reduction in the selectivity of the lamellar structure by negating the interlayer sieving mechanism that prevents the passage of large penetrants. Notably, the imperfect stacking of nanosheets in the MoS2 membrane was further verified using 2D X-ray diffraction measurements. We conclude that developing a well-controlled fabrication process, in which the lamellar structure can be carefully tuned, is critical to achieving defect-free and highly selective 2D desalination membranes.

Abstract
A low-carbon behaviour performance evaluation index system is designed by using a Delphi method in this study. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to systematically measure the low-carbon behaviour performance of 32 scenic spots in Zhangjiajie, a world heritage site. The key driving factors that can significantly influence the low-carbon behaviour performance of the scenic spot are extracted by combining redundancy analysis (RDA). The results show that the scenic spots of Zhangjiajie performance well regarding low-carbon behaviour, however, there are still a great deal of room for improvement and promotion. Pressure from investors, the administration committees, tourists and local governments is the main driving factor for the low-carbon behaviour of scenic spot.
