Sulfonated poly(etheretherketone) based nanocomposite membranes containing POSS-SA for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC)

Surface-Modified Approach to Fabricate Nafion Membranes Covalently Bonded with Polyhedral Oligosilsesquioxane for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

An aminopropyl isobutyl polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (NH₂-POSS) surface-modified Nafion membrane has been designed by chemical grafting for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). NH₂-POSS is a cage-like macromer consisting of an inorganic Si₈O₁₂ core surrounded by seven inert isobutyl groups and one active aminopropyl group. The sulfonic acid groups on the surface of Nafion can be activated by 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole for further modification with NH₂-POSS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove that NH₂-POSS has been successfully grafted on the surface of a Nafion 115 membrane. Although the proton conductivity decreases slightly, the organic-inorganic hybrid membranes display enhanced ion selectivity and excellent dimensional stability with lower water uptake and swelling ratio than Nafion 115. Moreover, two-dimensional-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD) reveals that the introduction of NH₂-POSS forms a POSS layer on the surface of the membrane and narrows the space of Nafion clusters, which helps to block VO²⁺ permeation. A VRFB with the surface-modified Nafion membrane displays an outstanding performance with an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.7% and energy efficiency (EE) of 84.5% at a current density of 80 mA cm^-2, superior to those of the Nafion 115 membrane (CE = 95.7%, EE = 81.7%). Furthermore, the cell holds a high capacity retention of 49.2% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles, in contrast to that of 41.9% for the cell with Nafion 115 after only 200 cycles. The results suggest that the surface-modified hybrid membrane is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ion crossover in VRFBs.

Sulphonated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane/sulphonated poly ether ether ketone nanocomposite membranes for microbial fuel cell: Insights to the miniatures involved

In this study we demonstrate Sulphonated Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (S-POSS) incorporated Sulphonated Poly Ether Ether Ketone (SPEEK) as an effective cation exchange membrane (CEM) for improving performance and sustainability in a fabricated tubular Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The organic-inorganic caged frame of S-POSS enables several ion conducting channels thereby resulting in better proton conductivity and water uptake in addition to hydroxide ions native in POSS. Among the membranes, SPEEK+ 5 wt% S-POSS exhibits a highest maximum performance of 162 ± 1.4 mW m^-2 with the highest IEC of 1.8 ± 0.05 meq g^-1. Microbial community analysis reveals the predominance of several bacterial strains contributing to wide range of mechanisms. Three phyla including Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Firmicutes showed maximum predominance. In addition to a novel nanocomposite membrane, the present research introduces perceptions of two metabolic mechanisms of the microbial community available which opens pathway for future insights on how other miniatures involve in electron transfer mechanisms.

Progress in the Synthesis of Bifunctionalized Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) has been considered as one of the most promising nanofillers in academic and industrial research due to its unique multifunctional nanostructure, easy functionalization, hybrid nature, and high processability. The progress of POSS has been extensive, particularly applications based on single- or multiple-armed POSS. In polymer hybrids, in order to enhance the properties, bifunctional POSS has been incorporated into the backbone chain of the polymer. This review summarizes recent developments in the synthesis, modification, and application of bifunctional POSS-containing composite materials. This includes amino-POSS, hydroxyl-POSS, aromatic ring-POSS, ether-POSS, and vinyl groups-POSS and their applications, exemplified by polyurethanes (PUs) and polyimides (PIs). In addition, the review highlights the enhancement of thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the composites.

Characterization and Application of Agave salmiana Cuticle as Bio-Membrane in Low-Temperature Electrolyzer and Fuel Cells

This work describes the application of the Agave salmiana cuticle as a new protonic exchange biological membrane (0.080 ± 0.001 mm thickness). Different chemical, electrochemical and mechanical treatments were evaluated to stimulate the ionic exchange properties of the cuticle. Thermal treatment was adequate for its application in a two-chamber electrolyzer. Under optimal conditions an ionic conductivity value of 10 ± 3 mS cm−1 was obtained; this value is similar to the value achieved using a Nafion membrane. The thermally-activated bio-membrane was also evaluated in a fuel cell, where the highest potential was obtained using methanol and hydrogen (0.46 ± 0.01 V). This result makes the Agave salmiana cuticle a competitive choice to replace the commercial membrane. Its surface morphology and their functional groups were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy. This thermally-treated Agave salmiana cuticle is an ecofriendly alternative to replace Nafion membranes in electrolyzer and fuel cells.
