A novel strategy based on magnetic field assisted preparation of magnetic and photocatalytic membranes with improved performance

Membrane processes enhanced by various forms of physical energy: A systematic review on mechanisms, implementation, application and energy efficiency

Membrane technologies in water and wastewater treatment have been eagerly pursued over the past decades, yet membrane fouling remains the major bottleneck to overcome. Membrane fouling control methods which couple membrane processes with online in situ application of external physical energy input (EPEI) are getting closer and closer to reality, thanks to recent advances in novel materials and energy deliverance methods. In this review, we summarized recent studies on membrane fouling control techniques that depend on (i) electric field, (ii) acoustic field, (iii) magnetic field, and (iv) photo-irradiation (mostly ultraviolet or visible light). Mechanisms of each energy input were first reported, which defines the applicability of these methods to certain wastewater matrices. Then, means of implementation were discussed to evaluate the compatibility of these fouling control methods with established membrane techniques. After that, preferred applications of each energy input to different foulant types and membrane processes in the experiment reports were summarized, along with a discussion on the trends and knowledge gaps of such fouling control research. Next, specific energy consumption in membrane fouling control and flux enhancement was estimated and compared, based on the experimental results reported in the literature. Lastly, strength and weakness of these methods and future perspectives were presented as open questions.

Facile Preparation of PVDF/CoFe2O4-ZnO Hybrid Membranes for Water Depollution

In this investigation, CoFe2O4-PVDF and CoFe2O4-ZnO-PVDF hybrid membranes were prepared using a modified phase inversion method in which a magnetic field was applied during the casting process to ensure a uniform distribution of nanomaterials on the membrane surface. Thus, better absorption of light and increased participation of nanoparticles in the photodegradation process is ensured. The influence of nanomaterials on the crystalline structure, surface morphology, and hydrophilicity properties of the PVDF membrane was investigated. The obtained results indicated that the hybrid membrane exhibited significant differences in its intrinsic properties due to the nanomaterials addition. The hydrophilicity properties of the PVDF membrane were improved by the presence of nanoparticles. The photocatalytic decomposition of aqueous Rhodamine B solution in the presence of the prepared membrane and under visible light irradiation was tested. The hybrid membrane containing CoFe2O4-ZnO on its surface exhibited a high removal rate.

Quantifying interfacial interactions for improved membrane antifouling: A novel approach using triangulation and surface element integration method

To gain a thorough understanding of interfacial behaviors such as adhesion and flocculation controlling membrane fouling, it is necessary to simulate the actual membrane surface morphology and quantify interfacial interactions. In this work, a new method integrating the rough membrane morphology reconstruction technology (atomic force microscopy (AFM) combining with triangulation technique), the surface element integration (SEI) method, the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, the compound Simpson's approach, and the computer programming was proposed. This new method can exactly mimic the real membrane surface in terms of roughness and shape, breaking the limitation of previous fractal theory and Gaussian method where the simulated membrane surface is only statistically similar to the real rough surface, thus achieving a precise description of the interfacial interactions between sludge foulants and the real membrane surface. This method was then applied to assess the antifouling propensity of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane modified with Ni-ZnO particles (NZPs). The simulated results showed that the interfacial interactions between sludge foulants in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) and the modified PVDF-NZPs membrane transformed from an attractive force to a repulsive force. The phenomenon confirmed the significant antifouling propensity of the PVDF-NZPs membrane, which is highly consistent with the experimental findings and the interfacial interactions described in previous literature, suggesting the high feasibility and reliability of the proposed method. Meanwhile, the original programming code of the quantification was also developed, which further facilitates the widespread use of this method and enhances the value of this work.

Smart and Multifunctional Materials Based on Electroactive Poly(vinylidene fluoride): Recent Advances and Opportunities in Sensors, Actuators, Energy, Environmental, and Biomedical Applications

From scientific and technological points of view, poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, is one of the most exciting polymers due to its overall physicochemical characteristics. This polymer can crystalize into five crystalline phases and can be processed in the form of films, fibers, membranes, and specific microstructures, being the physical properties controllable over a wide range through appropriate chemical modifications. Moreover, PVDF-based materials are characterized by excellent chemical, mechanical, thermal, and radiation resistance, and for their outstanding electroactive properties, including high dielectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric response, being the best among polymer systems and thus noteworthy for an increasing number of technologies. This review summarizes and critically discusses the latest advances in PVDF and its copolymers, composites, and blends, including their main characteristics and processability, together with their tailorability and implementation in areas including sensors, actuators, energy harvesting and storage devices, environmental membranes, microfluidic, tissue engineering, and antimicrobial applications. The main conclusions, challenges and future trends concerning materials and application areas are also presented.

Incorporation of graphene oxide/titanium dioxide with different polymer materials and its effects on methylene blue dye rejection and antifouling ability

Exposure of synthetic dye, such as methylene blue (MB), in water bodies led to a serious threat to living things because they are toxic and non-degradable. Amongst the introduced dye removal methods, membrane separation process can be considered a powerful technique for treating dye contamination. However, this method commonly suffered from drawbacks, such as short membrane lifetime, low permeability and selectivity. To overcome these issues, graphene oxide (GO) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) were used as additives to fabricate polyethersulfone (PES)- and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based hybrid membranes via non-solvent-induced phase separation method. Prior to membrane fabrication, GO was synthesised via electrochemical exfoliation method assisted by customised triple-tail surfactant. The potential of PES- and PVDF-based hybrid membranes for wastewater treatment has been discussed widely. However, direct comparison between these two polymeric membranes is not critically discussed for MB dye separation application yet. Therefore, this study is aimed at evaluating the performance of different types of polymers (e.g. PES and PVDF) in terms of membrane morphology, properties, dye rejection and antifouling ability. Results showed that the incorporation of GO and TiO₂ alters the morphology of the fabricated membranes and affects dye rejection further, as well as their antifouling performance. In contrast with pristine membrane, PES-GO/TiO₂ and PVDF-GO/TiO₂ possessed high hydrophilicity, as indicated by their low contact angle (67.38° and 62.12°, respectively). Based on this study, PVDF-GO/TiO₂ showed higher porosity value (94.88%), permeability (87.32 L/m²hMPa) and MB rejection rate (92.63%), as well as flux recovery ratio value of > 100% as compared with others. Overall, the incorporation of GO and TiO₂ with PVDF polymer are proven to be effective hybrid materials of membrane fabrication for dye rejection application in the near future. The polymer material's intrinsic properties can affect the attributes of the fabricated membrane.

Photocatalytic nanohybrid membranes for highly efficient wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review

Wastewater is inevitably generated from human activities as part of the life cycle chain that potentially damages the environment. The integration of photocatalytic reaction and membrane separation for wastewater treatment has gained great attention in recent studies. However, there are still many technical limitations for its application such as toxic metal release, catalyst deactivation, fouling/biofouling, polymer disintegration, and separation performance decline. Different types, combinations, and modifications of photocatalysts material combined with membranes such as semiconductor metal oxides, binary/ternary hybrid metal oxides, elemental doped semiconductors, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for improving the performance and compatibility are presented and discussed. The strategies of incorporating photocatalysts into membrane matrix for pursuing the most stable membrane integrity, high photocatalytic efficiency, and excellent perm-selectivity performance in the very recent studies were discussed. This review also outlines the performance enhancement of photocatalytic membranes (PMs) in wastewater treatment and its potential for water reclamation. Photocatalysts enhanced membrane separation by inducing anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties as well as antibacterial activity. Based on the reviewed study, PMs are possible to achieve complete removal of emerging contaminants and ∼99% reduction of bacterial colony that leading on the zero liquid discharge (ZLD). However, the intensive exposure of photo-induced radicals potentially damages the polymeric membrane. Therefore, future studies should be focused on fabricating chemically stable host-membrane material. Moreover, the light source and the membrane module design for the practical application by considering the hydrodynamic and cost-efficiency should be a concern for technology diffusion to the industrial-scale application.

Preparation of Ni@UiO-66 incorporated polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by magnetic field assisted strategy to improve permeability and photocatalytic self-cleaning ability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising nanofillers to fabricate mixed matrix membranes for water treatment. However, manipulating distribution of MOFs nanoparticles in the membrane matrix remains a great challenge. In this study, UiO-66 was firstly coated by magnetic Ni via an in-situ reduction reaction, and then incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix to prepare PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane. The magnetic Ni allowed to manipulate the distribution of magnetic Ni@UiO-66 in the phase-inversion process by an external magnetic field. The hydrophilic Ni@UiO-66 can be pulled onto membrane surface by the magnetic force, endowing the prepared membrane with rather higher hydrophilicity. The prepared membrane exhibited superior water permeability with a pure water flux of 611.5 ± 19.8 L·m^-2·h^-1 and improved antifouling performance. Moreover, benifiting from photocatalytic activity of the exposed Ni@UiO-66 on membrane surface, the obtained PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane demonstrated excellent photocatalytic self-cleaning ability with a flux recovery rate (FRR) higher than 95% under UV irradiation. Analyzing by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicated that the improved antifouling performance could be attributed to less attractive or even repulsive interaction between the prepared membrane and pollutants. This work provided valuable guidance for structural regulation and development of high-performance MOFs-based membranes for water treatment.

Preparation and application of high-performance and acid-tolerant TiO2/carbon electrocatalytic membrane for organic wastewater treatment

Acidic organic wastewater with toxic and carcinogenic properties has long been a tough problem for industrial treatment. To break down the barrier of poor acidic stability as well as the high cost of materials and reactors, a novel strategy of utilizing a high-performance and acid-tolerant TiO₂/carbon electrocatalytic membrane (TiO₂/CEM) for acidic organic wastewater treatment was proposed. Study results showed that high concentrations of organic pollutants were separated and degraded by the synergistic effects of membrane separation and electrocatalytic oxidation simultaneously on the TiO₂/CEM. The great treatment performance with membrane removal efficiency of >97.4% was obtained by treating acidic rhodamine B (RhB) dye wastewater under optimized applied voltage. Treatment experiments under various pH and electrochemical tests demonstrated the outstanding acid-tolerant property and long service life of TiO₂/CEM. Furthermore, the feasibility of TiO₂/CEM for industrial application and various acidic organic wastewater treatment was proved by treating typical organic pollutants (phenol, tetracycline and oil) under high acidic circumstances.

Self-sustained recovery of silver with stainless-steel based Cobalt/Molybdenum/Manganese polycrystalline catalytic electrode in bio-electroreduction microbial fuel cell (BEMFC)

In this study, a novel bio-electroreduction microbial fuel cell (BEMFC) assisted by stainless-steel based Cobalt/Molybdenum/Manganese (Co/Mo/Mn-SS) polycrystalline catalytic electrode was used to achieve high recovery to silver. The exoelectrogens (Shewanella sp. etc.) using organic wastewater (the inflow was controlled at 1.2 L d^-1) as nutrient matrix in the anode chamber generated electrons, while silver ions were simultaneously electroreduced and electrodeposited on the surface of the catalytic electrode as electron acceptors. Silver nanoplates could be observed directly. The products of electroreduction on the cathode were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), and the results of electrochemical characterization confirmed the existence of silver in the products. In the operation, the silver ions were in-situ recovered and enriched from the initial concentration of 20-300 mg L^-1 to almost complete recovery (8-18 h), with the maximum power density of 1008.2 mW m^-2 and 5.5 A m^-2 current density. The recovery efficiency of silver in the BEMFC using the Co/Mo/Mn-SS electrode was up to 9.60 kg m^-2h^-1, and the energy efficiency was 27.8 kg kWh^-1. Under the continuous flow operation mode, the BEMFC still achieved 90.2% recovery efficiency of the silver.

Photocatalytic Filtration of Zinc Oxide-Based Membrane with Enhanced Visible Light Responsiveness for Ibuprofen Removal

The growing interest in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for developing photocatalytic membranes has provided a new direction in the search for efficient methods to concurrently separate and degrade contaminants. In this study, a visible light-responsive photocatalyst was blended into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane casting solution to prepare PVDF-ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O MMMs using the wet phase inversion method. The potential of ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O as a photocatalytic component that is incorporated into the membrane was explored in detail under various loadings (0.5–2.91 wt%). The membranes were tested under ibuprofen (IBF) aqueous solution to analyze the membrane behavior in the synergistic combination of membrane filtration and photodegradation. The resulting PVDF-ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O membrane with a rougher membrane surface area and excellent light harvesting capability showed higher photocatalytic filtration activity in removing IBF under visible light irradiations. The MMM fluxes demonstrated higher IBF fluxes than their initial fluxes at certain durations. This indicates that the membrane actively responds to light irradiation. The increase in the positive flux could be attributed to the photoinduced hydrophilicity generated by the ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O photocatalyst, resulting in easier water layer formation and rapid transport through membranes. The highest IBF removal was demonstrated by the PVDF‑ZAA2 membrane (1.96 wt% loading), with 49.96% of IBF removal within 180 min upon visible light irradiation. The reason for this lower IBF removal is that the UF membrane pores exceed the size of IBF molecules, thereby preventing the size exclusion mechanism. Thus, charge repulsion, hydrophobic adsorption, and photocatalytic activity were considered along with the IBF removal of the photocatalytic membranes. However, the recyclability of the PVDF‑ZAA2 photocatalytic membrane showed a great improvement, with 99.01% of IBF removal recovery after three cycles. These results highlight the potential of such hybrid membranes in mitigating membrane fouling by providing a platform for photocatalysts to continuously degrade pollutants present in such wastewaters. Therefore, the hybridization of a photocatalyst and membrane provides insight that could be utilized to improve and retrofit current water effluent treatment methods.

Influence of biochar and microorganism co-application on stabilization of cadmium (Cd) and improved maize growth in Cd-contaminated soil

Cadmium (Cd) is one the leading environmental contaminants. The Cd toxicity and its potential stabilization strategies have been investigated in the recent years. However, the combined effects of biochar and microorganisms on the adsorption of Cd and maize plant physiology, still remained unclear. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of biochar (BC) pyrolyzed from (maize-straw, cow-manure, and poultry-manure, and microorganisms [Trichoderma harzianum (fungus) and Bacillus subtilis (bacteria)], on plant nutrient uptake under various Cd-stress levels (0, 10, and 30 ppm). The highest level of Cd stress (30 ppm) caused the highest reduction in maize plant biomass, intercellular CO₂, transpiration rate, water use efficiency, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis rate as compared to control Cd₀ (0 ppm). The sole application of BC and microorganisms significantly improved plant growth, intercellular CO₂, transpiration rate, water use efficiency, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis rate and caused a significant reduction in root and shoot Cd. However, the co-application of BC and microorganisms was more effective than the sole applications. In this regard, the highest improvement in plant growth and carbon assimilation, and highest reduction in root and shoot Cd was recorded from co-application of cow-manure and combined inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum (fungus) + Bacillus subtilis (bacteria) under Cd stress. However, due to the aging factor and biochar leaching alkalinity, the effectiveness of biochar in removing Cd may diminish over time, necessitating long-term experiments to improve understanding of biochar and microbial efficiency for specific bioremediation aims.

A multifunctional and environmentally safe superhydrophobic membrane with superior oil/water separation, photocatalytic degradation and anti-biofouling performance

Wastewater is typically complicated with spilled oil, water soluble toxic dyes and microorganisms, making it hard to be processed and causing a significant threat to the environmental safety and human health. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple solution immersion method to obtain a multifunctional cellulose-based membrane (CBM) that possesses both superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 163° and superior functionalities including self-cleaning, oil-water separation, anti-biofouling, and photocatalytic degradation capabilities. The achievement of separation efficiency (96%), comparatively high flux (141 L·m^-2·h^-1) and recyclable (7 times) oil/water separation performance is attributed to the robust superhydrophobicity enabled by the synergy of metal oxide (i.e., CuO) nanostructure coating and stearic acid (SA) modification. The superhydrophobic CBM also preferentially adsorbs organic dyes in aqueous solution, e.g., methylene blue (MB), promoting their efficient decomposition (about 70.3% of MB decomposed in 3 h) with high recyclability under UV irradiation. Most remarkably, the CBM exhibits superior anti-biofouling capability and persistently resists the algae adhesion in long duration (over 20 days), as a result of the self-cleaning ability as well as the antimicrobial property of CuO nanoparticles. Our finding here paves the way to use simple, cost-effective, environmentally safe, and reliable method to fabricate multifunctional materials for wastewater treatment in complex environments.

Predicting kinetics of water-rich permeate flux through photocatalytic mesh under visible light illumination

Membrane-based separation technologies are attractive to remediating unconventional water sources, including brackish, industrial, and municipal wastewater, due to their versatility and relatively high energy efficiency. However, membrane fouling by dissolved or suspended organic substances remains a primary challenge which can result in an irreversible decline of the permeate flux. To overcome this, membranes have been incorporated with photocatalytic materials that can degrade these organic substances deposited on the surface upon light illumination. While such photocatalytic membranes have demonstrated that they can recover their inherent permeability, less information is known about the effect of photocatalysis on the kinetics of the permeate flux. In this work, a photocatalytic mesh that can selectively permeate water while repelling oil was fabricated by coating a mixture of nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) and perfluorosilane-grafted SiO2 (F-SiO2) nanoparticles on a stainless steel mesh. Utilizing the photocatalytic mesh, the time-dependent evolution of the water-rich permeate flux as a result of photocatalytic degradation of the oil was studied under the visible light illumination. A mathematical model was developed that can relate the photocatalytic degradation of the organic substances deposited on a mesh surface to the evolution of the permeate flux. This model was established by integrating the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics for photocatalysis and the Cassie-Baxter wettability analysis on a chemically heterogeneous mesh surface into a permeate flux relation. Consequently, the time-dependent water-rich permeate flux values are compared with those predicted by using the model. It is found that the model can predict the evolution of the water-rich permeate flux with a goodness of fit of 0.92.

Fabrication of chitosan-aminopropylsilane graphene oxide nanocomposite hydrogel embedded PES membrane for improved filtration performance and lead separation

In the present study chitosan-aminopropylsilane graphene oxide (CS-APSGO) nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized and utilized as a hydrophilic additive in different dosages (0.5, 1, 2 and 5 wt%) in fabrication of porous polyethersulfone (PES) membranes via the phase inversion induced process by immersion precipitation method for heavy metal ion and dye removal. The modified membranes were characterized using ATR-FTIR, AFM, SEM, water contact angle, overall porosity and mean pore radius evaluations and zeta potential measurement. The addition of CS-APSGO nanocomposite hydrogel to PES doping solutions enhanced membranes hydrophilicity and consequently pure water flux permeability. Filtration performance of the CS-APSGO embedded membranes showed promising antifouling properties during BSA filtration test (FRR> 90%) and 1 wt% membranes showed the highest pure water flux of 123.8 L/m² h with BSA rejection more than 98% and removal capability more than 82% for lead (II) ion, 90.5% and 98.5% for C.I. Reactive Blue 50 and C.I. Reactive Green 19, respectively. Therefore, the CS-APSGO nanocomposite hydrogel blending in order to modification of PES-based membranes have a noticeable potential in improving filtration performance of blended membranes.

Smart Self-Cleaning Membrane via the Blending of an Upper Critical Solution Temperature Diblock Copolymer with PVDF

Poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(imidazoled glycidyl methacrylate-co-diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PTFEMA-b-P(iGMA-co-MEO₂MA)) containing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer chain was prepared and blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to produce a thermoresponsive membrane with smart self-cleaning performance. The successful preparation of the membrane was demonstrated by attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy characterization. The membrane shows UCST performance, and its flux changes with the filtrate temperature as the UCST polymer chain stretches out and contracts in response to various temperatures. In addition, the UCST polymer chain can disrupt the foulant and push it away from the membrane when the temperature is above the UCST and thus enables membranes to exhibit a smart self-cleaning behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first report of a smart self-cleaning membrane based on the blending of a diblock copolymer containing a UCST polymer chain with PVDF.

Visible Light-Driven GO/TiO2-CA Nano-Photocatalytic Membranes: Assessment of Photocatalytic Response, Antifouling Character and Self-Cleaning Ability

Photocatalysis and membrane technology in a single unit is an ideal strategy for the development of wastewater treatment systems. In this work, novel GO (x wt%)/TiO2-CA hybrid membranes have been synthesized via a facile non-solvent induced phase inversion technique. The strategy aimed to address the following dilemmas: (1) Effective utilization of visible light and minimize e-/h+ recombination; (2) Enhanced separation capability and superior anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. The experimental results reveal that the integration of nano-composite (GO/TiO2) boosts the membrane properties when compared to pristine CA and single photocatalyst employed membrane (GO-CA and TiO2-CA). The effect of GO content on the properties of the photocatalytic membrane has been determined by utilizing three different ratios of GO, viz. 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt% designated as NC(1)-CA, NC(2)-CA, and NC(3)-CA, respectively. Amongst them, NC(3)-CA membrane showed state-of-the-art performance with an elevated photocatalytic response (four times higher than pristine CA membrane) toward methyl orange. Moreover, the water flux of NC(3)-CA membrane is 613 L/m2h, approximately three times higher than bare CA membrane (297 L/m2h), while keeping the MO rejection high (96.6%). Besides, fouling experiments presented the lowest total and fouling resistance ratios and a higher flux recovery ratio (91.78%) for the NC(3)-CA membrane, which endows the membrane with higher anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. Thus, NC(3)-CA membrane outperforms the other as synthesized membranes in terms of separation efficiency, visible light photo-degradation of pollutant, anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. Therefore, NC(3)-CA membrane is considered as the next generation membrane for exhibiting great potential for the wastewater treatment applications.

A high-response formaldehyde sensor based on fibrous Ag-ZnO/In2O3 with multi-level heterojunctions

Timely detection of formaldehyde is pivotal because formaldehyde is slowly released from the indoor decorative materials, jeopardizing our healthy. Herein, a high-response formaldehyde gas sensor based on Ag-ZnO/In₂O₃ nanofibers was successfully fabricated. Compared with all the control samples, the hybrid exhibits superior sensitivity (0.65 ppm^-1), excellent selectivity (≥ 12.5) and durable stability (the deviation value ≤ 3%). Particularly, an ultra-high response value of about 186 towards 100 ppm of formaldehyde at 260 °C was achieved, heading the list of outstanding candidates. Additionally, the limit of detection is as low as 9 ppb. The enhanced gas sensing properties can be mainly attributed to multi-level heterojunctions (n-n heterojunction and Ohmic junction) and the "spill-over" effect of Ag, ultimately increasing the adsorption of gas molecules on the surface of sensing material. This work verifies that proper design of multi-level heterojunctions significantly upgrade the sensing performance.

Co-application of biochar and microorganisms improves soybean performance and remediate cadmium-contaminated soil

Sole biochar addition or microbial inoculation as a soil amendment helps to reduce cadmium (Cd) toxicity in polluted agricultural soils. Yet the synergistic effects of microorganisms and biochar application on Cd absorption and plant productivity remain unclear. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the combined effect of microorganisms (Trichoderma harzianum L. and Bacillus subtilis L.), biochar (maize straw, cow manure, and poultry manure), and Cd (0, 10, and 30 ppm) on plant physiology and growth to test how biochar influences microbial growth and plant nutrient uptake, and how biochar ameliorates under Cd-stressed soil. Results showed that in comparison to non-Cd polluted soil, the highest reduction in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and intercellular CO2 were observed in Cd2 (30 ppm), which were 9.34%, 22.95%, 40.45%, 29.07%, 20.67%, and 22.55% respectively less than the control Cd0 (0 ppm). Among sole inoculation of microorganisms, highest stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and intercellular CO2 were recorded with combined inoculation of both microorganisms (M3), which were 5.92%, 7.65%, and 7.28% respectively higher than the control, and reduced the Cd concentration in soil, root, and shoot by 21.34%, 28.36%, and 20.95%, respectively, compared to the control. Similarly, co-application of microorganisms and biochar ameliorated the adverse effect of Cd in soybean as well as significantly improved plant biomass, photosynthetic activity, nutrient contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities, and minimized the production of reactive oxygen species and Cd content in plants. Soil amended with poultry manure biochar had significantly improved the soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and available potassium by 43.53%, 36.97%, 22.28%, and 4.24%, respectively, and decreased the concentration of Cd in plant root and shoot by 34.68% and 47.96%, respectively, compared to the control. These findings indicate that the combined use of microorganisms and biochar as an amendment have important synergistic effects not only on the absorption of nutrients but also on the reduction of soybean Cd intake, and improve plant physiology of soybean cultivated in Cd-polluted soils as compared to sole application of microorganisms or biochar.

Thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate-based molecular perovskite from TG-DSC-FTIR-MS and ab initio molecular dynamics

(H₂dabco)[NH₄(ClO₄)₃] (DAP, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) is a recently synthesized ammonium perchlorate-based molecular perovskite energetic material. The high-symmetry perovskite configuration assembles the oxidant ClO₄⁻ and fuel H₂dabco²⁺ into a compact cubic crystal, realizing a high energy-releasing efficiency. In this study, the thermal decomposition of DAP has been investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) coupled with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy (MS). The TG-DSC profiles show that DAP has an intense one-stage heat release process with a weight loss of 94.7%. The evolved gas products are identified as H₂O, CO₂, CO, HCl, HCN, NH₃, HNCO by FTIR spectrum, in which the infrared characteristic peak at 2283 and 2250 cm⁻¹ is clarified not from N₂O and assigned to HNCO. The principal products are H₂O and CO₂ together with significant amounts of HCl, HCN, NH₃ in MS, while few nitrogen oxides and O₂ are detected. The experimental results show that organic components have been the prominent media for the degradation of ClO₄⁻. To refine the mechanism observed in experiment, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to reveal the atomistic reaction mechanisms. The decomposition of DAP starts with proton transfer from NH₄⁺ and H₂dabco²⁺ to ClO₄⁻. The deprotonated carbon skeleton is preferable to NH₃ in capturing O atoms, realizing a faster consumption of O atoms. Amounts of H atoms enter the environment being active free radicals, realizing an efficient autocatalytic chain propagation of degradation of ClO₄⁻. The atomistic thermal decomposition reaction mechanism of DAP uncovers the role of organic components in promoting the degradation of ClO₄⁻, which will help improve the synthesis strategy of molecular perovskite energetic materials with improved performance.

Immobilization of chitosan-templated MnO2 nanoparticles onto filter paper by redox method as a retrievable Fenton-like dip catalyst

By exploiting the hydrophilicity of cellulose filter paper (FP) and the excellent chelating property of chitosan (CH) for Mn²⁺, we have designed an efficient and retrievable dip catalyst MnO₂/CH-FP for Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue (MB) over a wide pH range from 2.8 to 11.2. The MnO₂ nanoparticles were uniformly immobilized in the CH-FP matrix by in-situ redox precipitation method where Mn(NO₃)₂ was treated with KMnO₄ at mild conditions. A series of MnO₂/CH-FP hybrids with different MnO₂ loading were fabricated via varying concentration of Mn(NO₃)₂ solution, and their structure-function relationships were discussed based on detailed characterization. The optimal catalyst 1.0MnO₂/CH-FP could cooperate with multiple low-concentration dosages of H₂O₂ to efficiently degrade 95.6% MB in 90 min (50 mg L^-1 MB, 1 g L^-1 catalyst, 30 mg L^-1 H₂O₂, pH 7). It is also shown that 1.0MnO₂/CH-FP could still keep 83.3% degradation efficiency of MB after six cycles. Moreover, the activity of this composite greatly surpassed that of bare MnO₂ for nearly 50%, owing to its larger surface area and more accessible active sites. This method for preparing MnO₂/CH-FP could effectively avoid the agglomeration of MnO₂ nanoparticles and make the reaction turn on/off almost instantaneously by mere insertion/removal.

Effect of sodium alginate molecular structure on electrospun membrane cell adhesion

Alginate-based electrospun nanofibers prepared via electrospinning technique represent a class of materials with promising applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. However, to date, the effect of alginate molecular mass and block composition on the biological response of such systems remains to some extent unclear. As such, in the present work, three alginates (i.e., M.pyr, L.hyp, A.nod) with different molecular features are employed to prepare nanofibers whose ability to promote cell adhesion is explored by using both skin and bone cell lines. Initially, a preliminary investigation of the raw materials is carried out via rheological and zeta-potential measurements to determine the different grade of polyelectrolyte behaviour of the alginate samples. Specifically, both the molecular mass and block composition are found to be important factors affecting the alginate response, with long chains and a predominance of guluronic moieties leading to a marked polyelectrolyte nature (i.e., lower dependence of the solution viscosity upon the polymer concentration). Subsequently, physically crosslinked alginate nanofibrous mats are first morphologically characterized via both scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, which show a homogenous and defect-free structure, and their biological response is then evaluated. Noticeably, fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines do not show significant differences in terms of cell adhesion on the three mats (i.e., 30-40% and 10-20% with respect to the seeded cells, respectively), with the formers presenting a greater affinity toward the alginate-based nanofibers. Conversely, both the investigated osteoblast cells are characterized by a distinct behaviour depending on the alginate type. Specifically, polysaccharide samples with an evident polyelectrolyte nature are found to better promote cell viability (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 15-36% with respect to seeded cells) compared to the ones displaying a nearly neutral behaviour (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 5-25% with respect to seeded cells). Therefore, the obtained results, despite being preliminary, suggest that the alginate type (i.e., molecular structure properties) may play a topical role in conditioning the efficiency of healing patches for bone reparation, but it has a negligible effect in the case of skin regeneration.
