Recent advances in aluminium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and its membrane applications

Microwave-Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Enhanced In Vitro Controlled Release of Doxorubicin

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidates for a range of applications because of their numerous advantages, such as high surface area, porosity, and thermal and chemical stability. In this study, microwave (MW) irradiation is used as a novel stimulus in vitro controlled release of Doxorubicin (DOX) from two MOFs, namely Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al), to enhance drug delivery in cancer therapy. DOX was encapsulated into Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al) with drug-loading efficiencies of up to 67% for Fe-BTC and 40% for MIL-53(Al). Several characterization tests, including XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, FE-SEM, and EDX, confirmed both MOF samples' drug-loading and -release mechanisms. Fe-BTC exhibited a substantial improvement in drug-release efficiency (54%) when exposed to microwave irradiation at pH 7.4 for 50 min, whereas 11% was achieved without the external modality. A similar result was observed at pH 5.3; however, in both cases, the release efficiencies were substantially higher with microwave exposure (40%) than without (6%). In contrast, MIL-53(Al) exhibited greater sensitivity to pH, displaying a higher release rate (66%) after 38 min at pH 5.3 compared to 55% after 50 min at pH 7.4 when subjected to microwave irradiation. These results highlight the potential of both MOFs as highly heat-responsive to thermal stimuli. The results of the MTT assay demonstrated the cell viability across different concentrations of the MOFs after two days of incubation. This suggests that MOFs hold promise as potential candidates for tumor targeting. Additionally, the fact that the cells maintained their viability at different durations of microwave exposure confirms that the latter is a safe modality for triggering drug release from MOFs.

When Polymorphism in Metal-Organic Frameworks Enables Water Sorption Profile Tunability for Enhancing Heat Allocation and Water Harvesting Performance

The development of thermally driven water-sorption-based technologies relies on high-performing water vapor adsorbents. Here, polymorphism in Al-metal-organic frameworks is disclosed as a new strategy to tune the hydrophilicity of MOFs. This involves the formation of MOFs built from chains of either trans- or cis- µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra. Specifically, [Al(OH)(muc)] or MIP-211, is made of trans, trans-muconate linkers, and cis-µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra giving a 3D network with sinusoidal channels. The polymorph MIL-53-muc has a tiny change in the chain structure that results in a shift of the step position of the water isotherm from P/P0 ≈ 0.5 in MIL-53-muc, to P/P0 ≈ 0.3 in MIP-211. Solid-state NMR and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo reveal that the adsorption occurs initially between two hydroxyl groups of the chains, favored by the cis-positioning in MIP-211, resulting in a more hydrophilic behavior. Finally, theoretical evaluations show that MIP-211 would allow achieving a coefficient of performance for cooling (COPc) of 0.63 with an ultralow driving temperature of 60 °C, outperforming benchmark sorbents for small temperature lifts. Combined with its high stability, easy regeneration, huge water uptake capacity, green synthesis, MIP-211 is among the best adsorbents for adsorption-driven air conditioning and water harvesting from the air.

Passivation-Free, Liquid-Metal-Based Electrosynthesis of Aluminum Metal-Organic Frameworks Mediated by Light Metal Activation

The production of aluminum (Al) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by electrosynthesis using solid-state Al electrodes always faces significant challenges due to the formation of a passivating aluminum oxide layer in the process. Here, we developed a liquid-metal-based method to electrosynthesize an aluminum Al-MOF (MIL-53). This method uses a liquid-state gallium (Ga) anode as a reservoir and activator for a light metal, Al, in the form of Al-Ga alloys that releases Al3+ for the electrosynthesis of Al-MOFs. Introducing Ga into the system inhibits the formation of aluminum oxide passivation layer and promotes the electrochemical reaction for Al-MOF synthesis. The electrosynthesis using liquid Al-Ga alloy is conducted at ambient temperatures for long durations without requiring pretreatment for aluminum oxide removal. We show that the Al-MOF products synthesized from 0.40 wt % Al in liquid Ga lead to the highest crystallinity and possess a specific surface area greater than 800 m2 g-1 and a low capacity for CO2 adsorption that can be used as a potential matrix for CO2/N2 separation. This work provides evidence that employing liquid-metal electrodes offers a viable pathway to circumvent surface passivation effects that inevitably occur when using conventional solid metals. It also introduces an efficient electrosynthesis method based on liquid metals for producing atomically porous materials.

A simple MOF constructed using Pb(II) with strong polarizing force: a filler of Nafion membrane to increase proton conductivity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising competitive candidates as fillers for Nafion proton exchange membrane (PEM). Increasing efforts have been made to explore methods for synthesizing MOF fillers and the mechanism by which MOF doping improves the proton conductivity (σH+) values of composite membranes. In this study, a Pb(II) cation with strong polarizing force was selected for the hydrothermal reaction with a simple sulfoterephthalate ligand (H3L). Pb-MOF [Pb2L(OH)]n was obtained, which was constructed using Pb-O layers and deprotonated sulfoterephthalate L3- and exhibited good thermal and water stability. Different amounts of Pb-MOF particles were doped into Nafion to fabricate Pb-MOF/Nafion-x composite membranes, which were characterized using SEM, PXRD, IR spectroscopy, TGA, and other methods. It was found that doping Pb-MOF can apparently improve the water absorbability and thermal stability of the composite membrane. The σH+ of the Pb-MOF/Nafion-7 composite membrane was the highest and 2.14 times that of the pure Nafion membrane at 353 K. The higher proton conduction properties may be explained by the strong polarization force, and Pb(II) cations on the surface of Pb-MOF can decrease the bond energy of the O-H bond of absorbed water molecules and increase the acidity of the composite membrane. The phenomena in this study and our previous study confirm that acidity is the most important factor in favor of proton conductivity.

Enhancing Nanofiltration Selectivity of Metal-Organic Framework Membranes via a Confined Interfacial Polymerization Strategy

Development of well-constructed metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes can bring about breakthroughs in nanofiltration (NF) performance for water treatment applications, while the relatively loose structures and inevitable defects usually cause low rejection capacity of MOF membranes. Herein, a confined interfacial polymerization (CIP) method is showcased to synthesize polyamide (PA)-modified NF membranes with MOF nanosheets as the building blocks, yielding a stepwise transition from two-dimensional (2D) MOF membranes to polyamide NF membranes. The CIP process was regulated by adjusting the loading amount of piperazine (PIP)-grafted MOF nanosheets on substrates and the additional content of free PIP monomers distributed among the nanosheets, followed by the reaction with trimesoyl chloride in the organic phase. The prepared optimal membrane exhibited a high Na2SO4 rejection of 98.4% with a satisfactory water permeance of 37.4 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, which could be achieved by neither the pristine 2D MOF membranes nor the PA membranes containing the MOF nanosheets as the conventional interlayer. The PA-modified MOF membrane also displayed superior stability and enhanced antifouling ability. This CIP strategy provides a novel avenue to develop efficient MOF-based NF membranes with high ion-sieving separation performance for water treatment.

Sustainable hydrogen generation and storage - a review

In 21st century, the energy demand has grown incredibly due to globalization, human population explosion and growing megacities. This energy demand is being mostly fulfilled by fossil-based sources, which are non-renewable and a major cause of global warming. Energy from these fossil-based sources is cheaper, however challenges exist in terms of climate change. This makes renewable energy sources more promising and viable for the future. Hydrogen is a promising renewable energy carrier for fulfilling the increasing energy demand due to its high energy density, non-toxic and environment friendly characteristics. It is a non-toxic energy carrier as combustion of hydrogen produces water as the byproduct whereas other conventional fuels produce harmful gases and carcinogens. Because of its lighter weight, hydrogen leaks are also easily dispersed in the atmosphere. Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, yet it is not readily available in nature like other fossil fuels. Hence, it is a secondary energy source and hydrogen needs to be produced from water or biomass-based feedstock for it to be considered renewable and sustainable. This paper reviews the renewable hydrogen generation pathways such as water splitting, thermochemical conversion of biomass and biological conversion technologies. Purification and storage technologies of hydrogen is also discussed. The paper also discusses the hydrogen economy and future prospects from an Indian context. Hydrogen purification is necessary because of high purity requirements in particular applications like space, fuel cells etc. Various applications of hydrogen are also addressed and a cost comparison of various hydrogen generation technologies is also analyzed. In conclusion, this study can assist researchers in getting a better grasp of various renewable hydrogen generation pathways, it's purification and storage technologies along with applications of hydrogen in understanding the hydrogen economy and its future prospect.

Novel strategies for the formulation and processing of aluminum metal-organic framework-based sensing systems toward environmental monitoring of metal ions

Aluminum is a relatively inexpensive and abundant metal for the mass production of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Aluminum-based MOFs (Al-MOFs) have drawn a good deal of research interest due to their unique properties for diverse applications (e.g., excellent chemical and structural stability). This review has been organized to highlight the current progress achieved in the synthesis/functionalization of Al-MOF materials with the special emphasis on their sensing application, especially toward metal ion pollutants in the liquid phase. To learn more about the utility of Al-MOF-based sensing systems, their performances have been evaluated for diverse metallic components in reference to many other types of sensing systems (in terms of the key quality assurance (QA) criteria such as limit of detection (LOD)). Finally, the challenges and outlook for Al-MOF-based sensing systems are discussed to help expand their real-world applications.

GO-Based Membranes for Desalination

Graphene oxide (GO), owing to its atomic thickness and tunable physicochemical properties, exhibits fascinating properties in membrane separation fields, especially in water treatment applications (due to unimpeded permeation of water through graphene-based membranes). Particularly, GO-based membranes used for desalination via pervaporation or nanofiltration have been widely investigated with respect to membrane design and preparation. However, the precise construction of transport pathways, facile fabrication of large-area GO-based membranes (GOMs), and robust stability in desalination applications are the main challenges restricting the industrial application of GOMs. This review summarizes the challenges and recent research and development of GOMs with respect to preparation methods, the regulation of GOM mass transfer pathways, desalination performance, and mass transport mechanisms. The review aims to provide an overview of the precise regulation methods of the horizontal and longitudinal mass transfer channels of GOMs, including GO reduction, interlayer cross-linking, intercalation with cations, polymers, or inorganic particles, etc., to clarify the relationship between the microstructure and desalination performance, which may provide some new insight regarding the structural design of high-performance GOMs. Based on the above analysis, the future and development of GOMs are proposed.

Water-Harvesting Metal-Organic Frameworks with Gigantic Al24 Units and their Deconstruction into Molecular Clusters

In contrast to the vast Al-oxo molecular cluster chemistry, Al-based building units for metal-organic framework (MOF) construction are limited in structural diversity and complexity. Synthesis of single crystalline MOFs based on this "hard" metal is further complicated by the poor reversibility of the Al-organic coordination linkages. Here, a strategy to employ two kinds of linkages with distinct strength-strong Al-carboxylate linkage and weak Cu-pyrazol N linkage-gives FDM-91 (FDM=Fudan Materials) with gigantic Al₂₄ -based units. After replacing the weak moieties with organic linkers post-synthetically, two new stable MOFs with exceptional water harvesting capacity (up to 0.53 g g^-1 ) and outstanding cycling performance are developed. Linkage-selective dissociation of FDM-91 further leads to the isolation of the Al₂₄ molecular clusters. The versatile chemistry performed here to reinforce or deconstruct MOFs provides a new way to make important extended and discrete structures.

Engineering Catalysis within a Saturated In(III)-Based MOF Possessing Dynamic Ligand-Metal Bonding

Metal-organic frameworks have developed into a formidable heterogeneous catalysis platform in recent years. It is well established that thermolysis of coordinated solvents from MOF nodes can render highly reactive, coordinatively unsaturated metal complexes which are stabilized via site isolation and serve as active sites in catalysis. Such approaches are limited to frameworks featuring solvated transition-metal complexes and must be stable toward the formation of "permanent" open metal sites. Herein, we exploit the hemilability of metal-carboxylate bonds to generate transient open metal sites in an In(III) MOF, pertinent to In-centered catalysis. The transient open metal sites catalyze the Strecker reaction over multiple cycles without loss of activity or crystallinity. We employ computational and spectroscopic methods to confirm the formation of open metal sites via transient dissociation of In(III)-carboxylate bonds. Furthermore, the amount of transient open metal sites within the material and thus the catalytic performance can be temperature-modulated.

Enhancing Proton Conductivity of Nafion Membrane by Incorporating Porous Tb-Metal-Organic Framework Modified with Nitro Groups

A rigid carboxylate ligand with a nitro functional group was selected to coordinate with Tb(III) cation, and Tb-MOF ({[Tb₄(L)₄(OH)₄(H₂O)₃]·8H₂O}_n, H₂L = 2-nitroterephthalic acid) with large porous and excellent hydrophilicity was obtained successfully. The obtained Tb-MOF was filled into the Nafion matrix to improve its proton conduction performance. The Tb-MOF/Nafion composite membrane was characterized by PXRD, IR, and thermogravimetry (TG) and for water uptake, area swelling, and proton conductivity. The activity energy, E_a, value of the composite membrane, which is a very important factor affecting the proton conduction performance of the membrane, was fitted and calculated. It was revealed that Tb-MOF can improve the proton conductivities of composite membranes, and the improvement degree and E_a value were both affected by Tb-MOF content. When Tb-MOF content was 5%, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane was 1.53 × 10^-2 S·cm^-1 at 100% RH and 80 °C, which is 1.81 times that of the pure Nafion membrane. A MOF containing a nitro functional group was first doped into Nafion in this study and exhibited excellent performance for improving composite membrane proton conductivity. This study will provide a valuable reference for designing different functionalized MOFs to promote the proton conductivities of proton exchange membranes.

Relative capability demonstration of luminescent Al-MOFs for ideal detection of nitroaromatic explosives

Here, we have synthesised three luminescent Al MOFs i.e., Al-NTP, Al-FDA, and Al-TDA, using common metal ions (AlCl₃·6H₂O) with different carboxylic acid organic linkers (5-nitroisophthalic acid, 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid, and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid) in a semi-aqueous medium. The structural analysis of Al-MOFs has been confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy. Afterward, the optical properties of all three Al-MOFs were confirmed using photoluminescence spectroscopy and demonstrated for the detection of nitroaromatic explosives. We have observed host-guest interaction through a quenching mechanism. Among the three synthesised Al-MOFs, Al-NTP MOF exhibit 0.014 ppm lowest limit of detection in chloroform at room temperature. Our comparative study results reveal that the selection of the organic linker and solvent plays a critical role in MOF based sensing applications.

Preparation of Ni@UiO-66 incorporated polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by magnetic field assisted strategy to improve permeability and photocatalytic self-cleaning ability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising nanofillers to fabricate mixed matrix membranes for water treatment. However, manipulating distribution of MOFs nanoparticles in the membrane matrix remains a great challenge. In this study, UiO-66 was firstly coated by magnetic Ni via an in-situ reduction reaction, and then incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix to prepare PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane. The magnetic Ni allowed to manipulate the distribution of magnetic Ni@UiO-66 in the phase-inversion process by an external magnetic field. The hydrophilic Ni@UiO-66 can be pulled onto membrane surface by the magnetic force, endowing the prepared membrane with rather higher hydrophilicity. The prepared membrane exhibited superior water permeability with a pure water flux of 611.5 ± 19.8 L·m^-2·h^-1 and improved antifouling performance. Moreover, benifiting from photocatalytic activity of the exposed Ni@UiO-66 on membrane surface, the obtained PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane demonstrated excellent photocatalytic self-cleaning ability with a flux recovery rate (FRR) higher than 95% under UV irradiation. Analyzing by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicated that the improved antifouling performance could be attributed to less attractive or even repulsive interaction between the prepared membrane and pollutants. This work provided valuable guidance for structural regulation and development of high-performance MOFs-based membranes for water treatment.

An Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Cage for Cesium Capture

Metal-organic cages are a class of supramolecular structures that often require the careful selection of organic linkers and metal nodes. Of this class, few examples of metal-organic cages exist where the nodes are composed of main group metals. Herein, we have prepared an aluminum-based metal-organic cage, H₈[Al₈(pdc)₈(OAc)₈O₄] (Al-pdc-AA), using inexpensive and commercially available materials. The cage formation was achieved via solvothermal self-assembly of solvated aluminum and pyridine-dicarboxylic linkers in the presence of a capping agent, acetic acid. The obtained supramolecular structure was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), thermogravimetric analysis, and NMR spectroscopy. Based on crystal structure and computational analyses, the cage has a 3.7 Å diameter electron-rich cavity suitable for the binding of cations such as cesium (ionic radius of 1.69 Å). The host-guest interactions were probed with ¹H and ¹³³Cs NMR spectroscopy in DMSO, where at low concentrations, Cs⁺ binds to Al-pdc-AA in a 1:1 ratio. The binding site was identified from the crystal structure of CsH₇[Al₈(pdc)₈(OAc)₈O₄] (Cs⁺⊂Al-pdc-AA), and a binding affinity of ∼10⁶-10⁷ M^-1 was determined from NMR titration experiments. The Al-pdc-AA showed improved selectivity for cesium binding over alkali metal cations (Cs⁺ > Rb⁺ > K⁺ ≫ Na⁺ ∼ Li⁺). Collectively, the study reports a novel aluminum cage that can serve as a promising host for efficient and selective cesium removal.

Pervaporation as a Successful Tool in the Treatment of Industrial Liquid Mixtures

Pervaporation is one of the most active topics in membrane research, and it has time and again proven to be an essential component for chemical separation. It has been employed in the removal of impurities from raw materials, separation of products and by-products after reaction, and separation of pollutants from water. Given the global problem of water pollution, this approach is efficient in removing hazardous substances from water bodies. Conventional processes are based on thermodynamic equilibria involving a phase transition such as distillation and liquid-liquid extraction. These techniques have a relatively low efficacy and nowadays they are not recommended because it is not sustainable in terms of energy consumption and/or waste generation. Pervaporation emerged in the 1980s and is now becoming a popular membrane separation technology because of its intrinsic features such as low energy requirements, cheap separation costs, and good quality product output. The focus of this review is on current developments in pervaporation, mass transport in membranes, material selection, fabrication and characterization techniques, and applications of various membranes in the separation of chemicals from water.

Interfacial nanoarchitectonics for ZIF-8 membranes with enhanced gas separation

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are potentially useful in gas separation applications. Conventional methods of MOF membrane preparation require multiple steps and high-pressure conditions. In this study, a reliable one-step interfacial synthesis method under atmospheric pressure has been developed to prepare zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membranes supported on porous α-Al2O3 disks. To obtain optimal ZIF-8 membranes, three reaction parameters were investigated, namely, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of the organic linker (i.e., 2-methylimidazole). The growth of ZIF-8 membranes under various parameters was evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and the optimal synthesis conditions were determined (i.e., 80 °C for 12 h in 50 mM of 2-methylimidazole). The as-synthesized ZIF-8 membranes were then applied to CO2/N2 gas separation, which exhibited a maximum separation factor of 5.49 and CO2 gas permeance of 0.47 × 10-7 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1.

Cationic Metal–Organic Framework-Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Fast Sensing and Removal of Cr2O72− Within Water

Considering that metal–organic framework (MOF)-polymer mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can overcome the drawbacks of intrinsic fragility and poor processability of pure-MOF membranes, we designed MOF-based MMMs for efficient removal and fast fluorescence sensing of heavily toxic ions within water systems simultaneously. In this work, a series of MOF-based MMMs are prepared by mixing a hydrolytically stable cationic [Eu₇ (mtb)₅(H₂O)₁₆]·NO₃ 8DMA·18H₂O (denoted as Eu-mtb) MOF material into poly (vinylidene fluoride) with high loadings up to 70%. The free volume at the interface between the polymer and Eu-mtb particles, combined with the permanent porosity and uniform distribution of Eu-mtb particles, enables these MMMs to show fast enrichment of Cr₂O₇^2- from solutions and consequently have a full contact between the analyte and MOFs. The developed Eu-mtb MMM (70wt% loading) thus shows both efficient removal and exceptional fluorescence sensing of Cr₂O₇^2- in aqueous media. The overall adsorption capacity of the Eu-mtb MMM (70 wt% loading) for Cr₂O₇^2- reaches up to 33.34 mg/g, which is 3.4 times that of powder-form Eu-mtb. The detection limit of the Eu-mtb MMM (70 wt% loading) for Cr₂O₇^2- is around 5.73 nM, which is lower than that of the reported powder-form Eu-mtb. This work demonstrates that it is feasible to develop flexible luminescent MOF-based MMMs as a significant platform for efficient removal and sensitive sensing of pollutants from water systems simultaneously.

Rapid reduction of real-time industry effluent using novel CuO/MIL composite

In this study, a series of novel metal organic framework based composite materials was synthesized using a facile combustion synthesis method. The synthesized materials were characterized using standard analytical techniques for crystallite size, surface functional groups, surface area, porosity, optical properties, and particle size. The increase in the amount of CuO in the composite material resulted decrease in surface area and pore volume. The band-gap energy of the synthesized composites reduced with increase in the amount of CuO. Among the composite, 0.9 CuO:0.1 MIL displayed least emission intensity indicating lower electron-hole recombination and thereby superior charge separation of the material. The increase in the amount of CuO NPs in the composite resulted in increase in the average particle size and decrease in the zeta potential. As an application, the NaBH₄-mediated reduction of Methyl orange dye was studied using the synthesized materials. The increased amount of CuO in the composite resulted in the higher activity of the material. Highest activity was observed with the composite containing 9:1 ratio of CuO and MIL, and this material was further used to investigate the reduction of methylene blue, Rhodamine B, 4-nitrophenol, 2-nitrophenol, and 2, 4-dichlorophenol. The material exhibited excellent activity for all the selected organic pollutants. Finally, the composite containing 9:1 ratio of CuO and MIL was employed for the reduction of a real-time industry effluent and the observed results were encouraging. The reusability aspect of the synthesized material was investigated. Based on the LC-MS analysis, a possible reduction mechanism is proposed.

Investigation of Duplex Brass Membranes with Metallography, Permeability and Treatments: Work-Hardening, Annealing and Quenching

This paper consists of the fabrication and investigation of metal membranes and the study of their behaviour and applications in gas separation processes. The scope is to produce and characterize the porous crystal structure of brass alloy (standardization: DIN 17660) membranes and measure their permeability with helium as a penetrant medium. Another part of this study is to alter the brass alloy’s structure throughout metallurgical treatments and investigate how the permeability is allied to the structure’s alteration. This work merges the knowledge and technology of inorganic porous materials science in metallurgy. The novelty of the current research resides in the process to alternate the brass alloy structure throughout metallurgical treatments and how it is allied to the permeability of the membrane, which is of interest to be investigated. The results of the research are analysed and compared conducting the final inferences. All metallurgical treatments resulted in low permeability values when compared to a non-treated specimen. Specifically, the drop in permeance ranged from 76 up to 99.56%. It is noted that consecutive treatments contributed to even further decreases.

High effective enrichment of U(VI) from aqueous solutions on versatile crystalline carbohydrate polymer-functionalized graphene oxide

The removal of uranium on various sorbents has been widely employed in recent times. However, the limited sorption capacities of these sorbents inhibit the actual application of the radionuclide in actual environments. The development of a novel material with high sorption capacity and superior regeneration for the removal of uranium is highly desirable. Therefore, a versatile class of crystalline carbohydrate polymers (COF) was prepared from organic compounds. Moreover, COF-functionalized graphene oxide (COF/GO) was synthesized and tested for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The batch characterization showed that COF was vertically oriented on the surface of GO using diboronic acid as nucleation sites. The maximum removal capacity of U(VI) on COF/GO reached 117.67 mg g-1, and was attributed to a huge void ratio and various oxygen-bearing functional groups. In addition, the inner-sphere surface-complexation dominated the U(VI) removal, and the adsorption mechanism of inner-sphere surface-complexation was transferred into surface precipitation with increasing reaction time. COF/GO can be converted into conductive carbon and reduced GO (C/rGO) nanocomposite, which has high specific capacitance. These results suggested that GO-based materials can be considered as promising candidates for the enrichment of U(VI) and energy storage.

Single-crystal ordered macroporous metal-organic framework as support for molecularly imprinted polymers and their integration in membrane formant for the specific recognition of zearalenone

Zearalenone is a fungal contaminant that is widely present in grains. Here, a novel molecularly imprinted membrane based on SOM-ZIF-8 was developed for the rapid and highly selective identification of zearalenone in grain samples. The molecularly imprinted membrane was prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride, cyclododecyl 2,4-dihydroxybenzoate as a template and SOM-ZIF-8 as a carrier. The factors influencing the extraction of zearalenone using this membrane, including the solution pH, extraction time, elution solvent, elution time, and elution volume, were studied in detail. The optimized conditions were 5 mL of sample solution at pH 6, extraction time of 45 min, 4 mL of acetonitrile:methanol = 9:1 as elution solvent, and elution time of 20 min. This method displayed a good linear range of 12-120 ng/g (R²  = 0.998) with the limits of detection and quantification of this method are 1.7 and 5.5 ng/g, respectively. In addition, the membrane was used to selectively identify zearalenone in grain samples with percent recoveries ranging from 87.9 to 101.0% and relative standard deviation of less than 6.6%. Overall, this study presents a simple and effective chromatographic pretreatment method for detecting zearalenone in food samples.

Design of metal-organic framework composites in anti-cancer therapies

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of new and promising anti-cancer materials. MOFs with adjustable pore size, large specific surface area, diverse structure, and excellent chemical and physical properties make them a class of effective protection carriers for anti-cancer substances. This review is centered on the core point of "anti-cancer" and discusses MOFs' research progress in anti-cancer therapies. Firstly, we provided readers with the different types of MOFs, their preparation strategies and the resulting structures. Then, different MOF composites and their biological applications were systematically presented. The specificity of biomolecules endows MOFs with broader anti-cancer applications, while MOFs can protect the drugs and biomolecules to make the best of a challenging situation. Finally, we elucidated a comprehensive overview of the biological applications of MOFs, including research hotspots as drug delivery and biomolecule carriers. Besides, we looked forward to the future developments of MOFs in the field of anti-cancer therapies. As a class of novel materials, the anti-cancer applications of MOFs are extended through the combination of different materials and different methods to improve their efficacy.

Aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (CAU-1) highly efficient UO22+ and TcO4- ions immobilization from aqueous solution

In this research, an Al-based metal-organic framework (MOFs), CAU-1 was prepared through complexation between 2-aminoterephthalic acid and Al (III) by solvothermal approach, and simple operation and cost-effective synthetic route. The objective was to immobilize the typical positive/negative radionuclide ions (UO₂²⁺/TcO₄^-) in aqueous solution. The synthesized CAU-1 was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, FESEM, TEM-SAED, pH_pzc, XPS and N₂ physisorption analysis. The structure of CAU-1 possessed excellent thermostability, rich functional groups (‒NH₂ and ‒OH groups), as well as large surface area (1636.3 m²/g) and the micropore volume (0.51 m³/g). Furthermore, batch experiments demonstrated that CAU-1 with superior adsorption capacity was 648.37 (UO₂²⁺) mg/g and 692.33 (ReO₄^-) mg/g calculating from Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Thermodynamic investigation showed the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of ReO₄^- ion onto CAU-1 could be electrostatic attraction and chelation effect, while for UO₂²⁺ ion, was mainly chelation effect induced by nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing functional groups. Hence, the inexpensive and high-capacity CAU-1 could be considered as a practical material for sequestrations of radioactive pollutants from water environment.
