Abstract
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) is an infectious disease that causes hematological changes in dogs. This study investigated the correlations between hematological and hemorheological parameters, serum proteins, and triglycerides in dogs with CME. Fifty-nine blood and/or bone marrow samples were collected from dogs with or without clinical signs of CME. Blood samples preserved with EDTA were subjected to rheological analysis to investigate blood viscosity. Fourteen dogs with Ehrlichia canis infection (CME group) and 20 without clinical signs and E. canis infection (CG) were selected by qPCR based on Ecaj_0503 gene. The blood viscosity of the infected dogs (CMEG) was lower than that of the control group (CG). The mean values and standard error of erythrocytes (CG: 6.71 ± 0.20; CMEG: 4.82 ± 0.23), platelets (CG: 235.6 ± 15.67; CMEG: 151.07 ± 16.51), and albumin (CG: 3.04 ± 0.15; CMEG: 2.65 ± 0.12) in the infected dogs were lower (p<0.005) than those in the control group. The decrease in erythrocytes influenced the decrease in blood viscosity. Total protein, albumin and triglycerides levels correlated with blood viscosity in infected dogs. Overall, this study shows that dogs with CME have decreased blood viscosity primarily due to anemia and interactions with negative acute-phase proteins.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS), defined as a disruption in redox balance favoring oxidants, has emerged as a major contributor to numerous diseases in human and veterinary medicine. While several reviews have explored the implication of OS in human pathology, an exhaustive review of the canine species is lacking. This comprehensive review aims to summarize the existing literature on the role of OS in canine diseases, highlighting its potentially detrimental effect on various organs and systems. Some inconsistencies among studies exist, likely due to varying biomarkers and sample types. However, there is substantial evidence supporting the involvement of OS in the development or progression of numerous canine disorders, such as cardiovascular, oncologic, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hematologic, renal, neurologic, infectious, and parasitic diseases, among others. Additionally, this review discusses the efficacy of antioxidant and pro-oxidant therapeutic agents for these conditions. Dietary interventions to counteract OS in dogs have gained significant attention in recent years, although further research on the topic is needed. This review aims to serve as a foundational resource for future investigations in this promising field.

Abstract
Background and Aim Anemia is an important factor in surviving chronic kidney disease (CKD). Anemia in CKD is associated with various factors, such as inadequate production of erythropoietin and the availability of iron and its binding protein. Reduced total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and iron concentrations may be related to their urinary loss along with proteinuria. This study aimed to determine the urinary loss of iron and transferrin (TF) in relation to the degree of proteinuria. Materials and Methods The study was performed on 37 dogs with CKD. Dogs were divided according to the severity of proteinuria into two groups based on the mean of urinary protein-creatinine (UPC) ratio into UPC ratio <4 and UPC ratio >4. The hematocrit (HCT), blood chemistries, plasma iron, plasma TF, UPC ratio, urinary iron per creatinine ratio (U-Iron/CR), and urinary TF per creatinine ratio (U-TF/CR) were evaluated. Results Anemia was associated with the severity of renal impairment as demonstrated by reduction of HCT when staging of CKD was higher. Dogs with UPC ratio >4 had higher urinary loss of both U-Iron/CR (p < 0.01) and U-TF/CR (p < 0.001) with lower plasma TIBC (p < 0.001). The UPC ratio was positively correlated with both U-Iron/CR (r = 0.710, p < 0.001) and U-TF/CR (r = 0.730, p < 0.001) but negatively with TIBC (r = -0.462, p < 0.01). Conclusion Proteinuria was associated with urinary loss of both iron and TF which may contribute to anemia in CKD.

Abstract
The work was aimed to research into the vital signs, haematological and biochemical parameters, acute-phase protein concentrations (CRP, albumin), progesterone (PG) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations in bitches with pyometra and their comparison with those in healthy bitches. In addition, the goal of this work was to assess if some of the tested parameters may be used as a biomarker in the diagnostics of pyometra and the monitoring of the postoperative recovery. Forty 3-6-year-old bitches of various breeds were included in the research and allotted to two groups: the control (C, n = 20) and the diseased - bitches diagnosed with pyometra (P, n = 20). Blood samples for the analyses were taken immediately before surgery (0 h), and 12 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after, excepting for AMH and PG concentrations, which were determined only at 0 h. Clinical examination detected significantly higher respiration rates in bitches with pyometra in comparison to healthy ones at all time points, higher heart rates before and 12 h after surgery, and higher body temperature before and 12 h, 48 h and 72 h post operation (p < .01). Significantly higher concentrations of CRP (p < .01) and lower concentrations of albumin were detected in bitches with pyometra in comparison to their healthy counterparts at all time points. Progesterone and AMH concentration analysis immediately before surgery detected significantly higher levels of the hormone in bitches with pyometra than in the control (p < .01). The inflammatory reaction of the endometrium resulted in a significant AMH concentration increase, whilst increased CRP concentrations and lower albumin concentrations throughout the research may be used as biomarkers of proinflammatory activities, that is of the acute-phase response.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the concentration of reactive oxidative metabolites (R-OOHs), the antioxidant barrier (OXY), and the ratio between R-OOHs and OXY (OSi) and thiol groups of plasma compounds (SHp) in in canine monocytic ehrlichiosis. Thirty dogs affected with monocytic ehrlichiosis (canine monocytic ehrlichiosis group—CME group) and ten healthy dogs (control group—CTR group) were evaluated. CME was diagnosed by the presence of clinical signs and the detection of anti-Ehlichia canis antibodies. Oxidative stress parameters of two groups were compared using the Mann–Whitney test. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Spearman rank correlation was performed to analyze oxidative stress, and hematological and biochemical variables in the CME group. All dogs affected with CME showed a wide spectrum of clinical signs such as lethargy, anorexia, fever, weight loss, lymph adenomegaly, splenomegaly, subcutaneous and mucosal petechial and ecchymosis, and vomiting. Anaemia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hyperglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia and an increase of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine are also detected. Results showed significantly lower values of SHp in the CME group than in CTR. A statistically significant difference in the number of white blood cells, platelets, and blood urea nitrogen concentration was assayed comparing to the two groups. A negative correlation between SHp and hemoglobin concentration was recorded. These preliminary results may suggest a possible function of oxidative stress in the onset of clinical signs during the course of CME.

Abstract
Tick vaccination is an environmentally friendly alternative for tick control, pathogen infection, and transmission. Tick vaccine protection is sometimes incomplete, which may be due to problems in the stability, conformation, and activity of antibodies. This might be related to oxidative stress, but more studies are needed about the possible relationships between oxidative stress and immune function. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare various serum biomarkers of antioxidant response and oxidative damage in cattle vaccinated with two recombinant antigens, the chimera of Subolesin- BM95 (homologue antigen of BM86)-MSP1a and BM86, and a control consisting in the adjuvant of the vaccines. Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing ability of the plasma (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), total thiol concentrations, and uric acid were evaluated in serum to determine the antioxidant response. To evaluate oxidative status, ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange (FOX), total oxidant status (TOS), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations in serum were determined. In addition, correlations between biomarkers of oxidative stress and antibody titers were evaluated. A significant decrease in all antioxidant biomarkers, with exception of thiol, and also a decrease in the oxidant markers TOS, AOPP and H2O2 was observed in cattle vaccinated with BM86, that also showed the highest antibody titers response whereas no significant differences in any of the biomarkers were detected in the Subolesin-Bm95-MSP1a and control groups. In addition, the dynamics of Cuprac and H2O2 with time showed significant differences between the groups. Although this is a pilot study and the results should be interpreted with caution and corroborated by studies involving a large number of animals, our results indicate that, in our experimental conditions, those vaccines able to induce a lower oxidative stress produce a higher concentration of antigen-specific antibodies. Overall, the results of the study provided information on the behavior of different biomarkers related to antioxidant defense, and the oxidative damage in cattle in response to vaccination.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the identification of proteins differentially represented in the serum proteome of seropositive dogs with (Group 1) and without (Group 2) clinical-pathologic signs consistent with ehrlichiosis compared to healthy control dogs. Serum samples were collected from 20 dogs of various breeds with naturally occurring ehrlichiosis (10 dogs belonged to Group 1 and 10 to Group 2) and 10 healthy dogs. Two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) of pooled serum for each of the group of dogs were run in triplicate. 2D image analysis showed 39 spots differently expressed between Group 1 and Group 2 compared with healthy ones. Mass spectrometry analysis allowed identification of 6 proteins: albumin, haptoglobin (Hp), alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT), Retinol Binding Protein 4 (RBP-4), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP). When a confirmatory study was performed for albumin, Hp, AAT and RBP-4 by using different assays, significant differences (P < 0.05) between diseased and healthy groups were observed. It can be concluded that there are significant changes in the serum proteome of dogs with ehrlichiosis with modifications in proteins related with the acute phase response such as Hp, albumin and AGP, with vitamin A transport such as RBP-4, with inhibitors of serine proteases and anti-inflammatory proteins such as AAT, and vitamin D metabolism and actin scavengers such as VDBP.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the antioxidant response and the products of oxidative damage analysed by various assays in clinical and subclinical canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME). For this purpose, four assays to measure the total serum antioxidant capacity (TAC), such as the cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) using acidic medium (TEACA), and the TEAC using the horseradish peroxidase (TEACH) were used. In addition, the serum thiol concentrations were analysed. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange (FOX) were measured to determine the concentrations of free radical and the products of oxidative damage as result of the disease. All antioxidant markers were significantly lower in the dogs on clinical ehrlichiosis when compared with healthy dogs; however only the CUPRAC, FRAP and thiol were significantly lower in subclinical CME compared with healthy dogs. TBARS and FOX showed no significant differences between dogs with CME and healthy dogs; however, a significant increased ROS concentration was observed in dogs with clinical and subclinical CME when compared with healthy dogs. Results showed that in CME there is a state of oxidative stress with significant changes in markers of antioxidant defence and in concentrations of free radicals. However, the detection of these changes would depend of the assay used.
