Activated vs. pyrolytic carbon as support matrix for chemical functionalization: Efficient heterogeneous non-heme Mn(II) catalysts for alkene oxidation with H2O2

Construction of a highly stable natural silicate-supported molybdenum catalyst for efficient epoxidation of olefins

Epoxides are important bulk chemicals, playing irreplaceable role in the chemical industry, but facing serious pollution and low productivity in the production process. Therefore, the development of green and efficient epoxidation of olefins by stable catalysts with low prices is of great significance. In this study, a Mo-MATP catalyst was prepared by modifying Mo(CO)₆ on attapulgite through Si-O bonding. Mo-MATP exhibits excellent performance (99% yield of cyclooctane oxide, CYCO) and stability (80% selectivity of CYCO after 17 cycles), highly tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) utilization, and extensive substrate scalability. Furthermore, the in-situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Electron Spin-resonance Spectroscopy (ESR) and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) spectra suggest that TBHP would be activated by Mo-MATP to generate peroxyl radicals, which then oxidize alkenes to their corresponding epoxides. In this study, the stable loading of Mo would largely solve the problem of Mo loss during the catalytic process, thus providing a stable and dispersed Mo active center, enabling the catalyst to possess high catalytic performance and recycling stability.

Fabrication of Pt-Loaded Catalysts Supported on the Functionalized Pyrolytic Activated Carbon Derived from Waste Tires for the High Performance Dehydrogenation of Methylcyclohexane and Hydrogen Production

The pyrolytic activated carbon derived from waste tires (PTC) was functionalized to fabricate the high performance of Pt-based catalysts in the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane and hydrogen production. Structural characterizations evidenced that the modification partially influenced the surface area, the pore structure, and the oxygen-containing functional groups of the supports. The techniques of CO pulse, transmission electron microscopy, and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction were utilized to investigate the dispersion degrees and particle sizes of the active component Pt, and its interaction with the various functionalized supports, respectively. The results manifested that Pt particles loaded on the functionalized PTC-S had the largest dispersion degree and the smallest size among those loaded on PTC and other functionalized PTC (i.e., PTC-K and PTC-NH). Finally, the Pt-based catalysts were successfully applied in the dehydrogenation reaction of methylcyclohexane to yield hydrogen. The results revealed that the Pt catalyst over the functional PTC-S support exhibited a more excellent conversion of methylcyclohexane (84.3%) and a higher hydrogen evolution rate (991.5 mmol/gPt/min) than the other resulting Pt-based catalysts.

A theoretical study based on DFT calculations on the different influence of functional groups on the C–H activation process via Pd-catalysed β-X elimination

We have performed a series of theoretical calculations for palladium-catalyzed β-X elimination reactions. The DFT calculation combined with energy decomposition analysis shows the determining factors of reactivity. Such as, the elemental composition, the structure of different functional groups and the stronger steric repulsions contribution.

The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) results show the quantitative contribution of nucleophile groups in intramolecular interactions.

Loofah-derived activated carbon supported on nickel foam (AC/Ni) electrodes for the electro-sorption of ammonium ion from aqueous solutions

Activated carbon (AC), prepared from dried loofah sponge, was supported on nickel foam to fabricate AC/Ni electrodes. The characteristics of ammonium electrosorption on AC/Ni electrodes was studied. Results showed that AC prepared in one-step activation (without pre-pyrolysis), i.e., OAC, had relatively low crystallinity, high mesoporosity, and high specific capacitance compared to those made in two-step carbonation followed by activation. Adsorption and desorption density of NH₄⁺ were measured at constant potential of -1.0 V (vs. Hg/HgO) and +0.1 V (vs. Hg/HgO), respectively. Non-faradaic charging contributed to the electrochemical storage and adsorption of ammonium ions on the AC surface with a maximal charge efficiency of 80%, at an applied potential of -1.0 V (vs. Hg/HgO). Multiple-layer adsorption isotherm better described the electrosorption of ammonium ion on OAC/Ni electrodes yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 6 mg-N g^-1, which was comparable with other similar systems. Overall, results clearly demonstrated the effect of synthesis strategy on the capacitive charging behaviors of AC/Ni electrodes and its relationship to NH₄⁺ electrosorption.

Recent Progress in Application of Molybdenum-Based Catalysts for Epoxidation of Alkenes

Epoxides are important industrial intermediates applied in a variety of industrial processes. During the production of epoxides, catalysts have played an irreplaceable and unique role. In this review, the historic progress of molybdenum-based catalysts in alkene epoxidation are covered and an outlook on future challenge discussed. Efficient catalysts are demonstrated including soluble molybdenum complexes, polyoxometalates catalysts, molybdenum-containing metal organic frameworks, silica supported molybdenum-based catalysts, polymer supported molybdenum-based catalysts, magnetic molybdenum-based catalysts, hierarchical molybdenum-based catalysts, graphene-based molybdenum containing catalysts, photocatalyzed epoxidation catalysts, and some other systems. The effects of different solvents and oxidants are discussed and the mechanisms of epoxidation are summarized. The challenges and perspectives to further enhance the catalytic performances in alkenes epoxidation are presented.

Stereoselective Alkane Oxidation with meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid (MCPBA) Catalyzed by Organometallic Cobalt Complexes

Cobalt pi-complexes, previously described in the literature and specially synthesized and characterized in this work, were used as catalysts in homogeneous oxidation of organic compounds with peroxides. These complexes contain pi-butadienyl and pi-cyclopentadienyl ligands: [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(benzene)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(C₆H₆)]PF₆ (1); diiodo(carbonyl)(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt, Cp*Co(CO)I₂ (2); diiodo(carbonyl)(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, CpCo(CO)I₂ (3); (tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(dicarbonyl)(iodo)cobalt, (C₄Me₄)Co(CO)₂I (4); [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(acetonitrile)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(bipy)(MeCN)]PF₆ (5); bis[dicarbonyl(B-cyclohexylborole)]cobalt, [(C₄H₄BCy)Co(CO)₂]₂ (6); [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(phen)I]PF₆ (7); diiodo(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, [CpCoI₂]₂ (8); [(cyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [CpCo(bipy)I]PF₆ (9); and [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(bipy)I]PF₆ (10). Complexes 1 and 2 catalyze very efficient and stereoselective oxygenation of tertiary C–H bonds in isomeric dimethylcyclohexanes with MCBA: cyclohexanols are produced in 39 and 53% yields and with the trans/cis ratio (of isomers with mutual trans- or cis-configuration of two methyl groups) 0.05 and 0.06, respectively. Addition of nitric acid as co-catalyst dramatically enhances both the yield of oxygenates and stereoselectivity parameter. In contrast to compounds 1 and 2, complexes 9 and 10 turned out to be very poor catalysts (the yields of oxygenates in the reaction with cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane were only 5%–7% and trans/cis ratio 0.8 indicated that the oxidation is not stereoselective). The chromatograms of the reaction mixture obtained before and after reduction with PPh₃ are very similar, which testifies that alkyl hydroperoxides are not formed in this oxidation. It can be thus concluded that the interaction of the alkanes with MCPBA occurs without the formation of free radicals. The complexes catalyze oxidation of alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). For example, tert-BuOOH efficiently oxidizes 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone in 98% yield if compound 1 is used as a catalyst.
