Abstract
INTRODUCTION Immediate control of bleeding and anti-infection play important roles in wound management. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death may occur if persistent bleeding, hemodynamic instability, and hypoxemia are not addressed. The combination of clay and hydrogel provides a new outlet for wound hemostasis. In this review, the current research progress of hydrogel/clay composite hemostatic agents was reviewed. AREAS COVERED This paper summarizes the characteristics of several kinds of clay including kaolinite, montmorillonite, laponite, sepiolite, and palygorskite. The advantages and disadvantages of its application in hemostasis were also summarized. Future directions for the application of hydrogel/clay composite hemostatic agents are presented. EXPERT OPINION Clay can activate the endogenous hemostatic pathway by increasing blood cell concentration and promoting plasma absorption to accelerate the hemostasis. Clay is antimicrobial due to the slow release of metal ions and has a rich surface charge with a high affinity for proteins and cells to promote tissue repair. Hydrogels have some properties such as good biocompatibility, strong adhesion, high stretchability, and good self-healing. Despite promising advances, hydrogel/clay composite hemostasis remains a limitation. Therefore, more evidence is needed to further elucidate the risk factors and therapeutic effects of hydrogel/clay in hemostasis and wound healing.

Dopant-driven recombination delay and ROS enhancement in nanoporous Cd 1-xCu xS heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of DR-23 dye under visible light irradiation. Abstract
Developing an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for environmental remediation and treatment strategies using visible light harvesting processes is promising but challenging. Herein, Cd1-xCuxS materials have been synthesized and characterized by precise analytical tools. Cd1-xCuxS materials exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for direct Red 23 (DR-23) dye degradation in visible light irradiation. The operational parameters, like dopant concentration, photocatalyst dose, pH, and initial concentration of dye were investigated during the process. The photocatalytic degradation process follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. As compared to other tested materials, 5% Cu doped CdS material revealed superior photocatalytic performance for the degradation of DR-23 (k = 13.96 × 10-3 min-1). Transient absorption spectroscopy, EIS, PL, and transient photocurrent indicated that adding copper to the CdS matrix improved the separation of photo-generated charge carriers by lowering the recombination rate. Spin-trapping experiments recognized the photodegradation primarily based on secondary redox products, i.e., hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. According to by Mott-Schottky curves, photocatalytic mechanism and photo-generated charge carrier density were elucidated regarding dopant-induced valence and conduction bands shifting. Thermodynamic probability of radical formation in line with the altered redox potentials by Cu doping has been discussed in the mechanism. The identification of intermediates by mass spectrometry study also showed a plausible breakdown mechanism for DR-23. Moreover, samples treated with nanophotocatalyst displayed excellent results when tested for water quality metrics such as DO, TDS, BOD, and COD. Developed nanophotocatalyst shows high recyclability with superior heterogeneous nature. 5% Cu-doped CdS also exhibit strong photocatalytic activity for the degradation of colourless pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light (k = 8.45 × 10-3 min-1). The results of this study offer exciting opportunities to alter semiconductors' electronic band structures for visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
This study is focused on the preparation, characterization, and multifunctional properties of intelligent hybrid nanopigments. The hybrid nanopigments with excellent environmental stability and antibacterial and antioxidant properties were fabricated based on natural Monascus red, surfactant, and sepiolite via a facile one-step grinding process. The density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the surfactants loaded on sepiolite were in favor of enhancing the electrostatic, coordination, and hydrogen bonding interactions between Monascus red and sepiolite. Thus, the obtained hybrid nanopigments exhibited excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties, with an inhibition effect on Gram-positive bacteria that was superior to that of Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the scavenging activity on DPPH and hydroxyl free radicals as well as the reducing power of hybrid nanopigments were higher than those of hybrid nanopigments prepared without the addition of the surfactant. Inspired by nature, gas-sensitive reversible alochroic superamphiphobic coatings with excellent thermal and chemical stability were successfully designed by combining hybrid nanopigments and fluorinated polysiloxane. Therefore, intelligent multifunctional hybrid nanopigments have great application foreground in related fields.

Abstract
The development of adsorbents with outstanding adsorption capacities, wide versatility, and excellent recyclability for the removal of organic dyes remains a challenge. In this study, a quaternised chitosan-based aerogel (QCSA) was fabricated via a facile method to effectively treat concomitant anionic dyes. Porous QCSA with high hydrophilicity, nontoxicity, excellent thermal stability, and sustainability exhibits adsorption properties superior to most previously reported adsorbents. The equilibrium adsorption capacities for Congo red, Sunset yellow, and Methyl orange were 1259.6, 550.2, and 607.5 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the spent QCSA exhibits excellent cyclic performance. The multilayer adsorption, external-internal mass transfer resistance, and adsorption on the active site models were employed to enable a more accurate description of the dynamic characteristics, confirming that double-layer chemisorption was the dominant process. A quantitative analysis of the electrostatic potential and the independent gradient model further verified that electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces led to the highly efficient adsorption of dye molecules. Therefore, the eco-friendly and recyclable QCSA is a promising adsorbent for trapping anionic dyes from aquatic systems.

Abstract
In recent years, the combination of experimental and theoretical study to explain adsorbate/adsorbent interactions has attracted the attention of researchers. In this context, this work aims to study the adsorption of two cationic dyes, namely methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV), on a green adsorbent Montmorillonite@activated carbon (Mt@AC) composite and to explain the adsorption behavior of each dye by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. The eco-friendly nanocomposite Mt@AC is synthesized and characterized by the analysis methods: XRD, FTIR, BET, TGA/DTA, SEM-EDS, EDS-mapping and zeta potential. The experimental results of adsorption equilibrium show that the adsorption of the two dyes is well suited to the Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the two dyes reaches 801.7 mg g-1 for methylene blue and 1110.8 mg g-1 for crystal violet. The experimental kinetics data fit well with a pseudo-first order kinetic model for the two dyes with coefficient of determination R 2 close to unity, non-linear chi-square χ 2 close to zero and lower Root Mean Square Error RMSE (R 2 → 1 and χ 2 → 0, RMSE lower). Molecular dynamic simulations are run to gain insights on the adsorption process. According to the RDF analysis and interaction energy calculations, the obtained results reveal a better affinity of the CV molecule with both the AC sheet and montmorillonite framework as compared with MB. This finding suggests that CV is adsorbed to a larger extent onto the nanocomposite material which is in good agreement with the adsorption isothermal experiment observations.

Abstract
In this study, Gradient Boosted Regression Trees is applied, for the first time, to predict governing factors for methylene blue (MB) adsorption on a variety of adsorbents involving clay minerals, such as kaolinite and sepiolite together with industrial wastes red mud and fly ash, and alkali activated materials synthesized from aforementioned raw materials. Dataset was constructed using electronic databases, such as ScienceDirect, Scopus, Elsevier, and Google, experimental studies published between 2005 and 2022 were covered. The final dataset included experimental conditions, such as adsorbent type, adsorbent properties (surface characteristics, density, and chemical modifications), pH of the medium, adsorbent dosage, and temperature; and it involved 914 datapoints, which were extracted out of 75 papers (out of ∼1360 initially screened). Among distinct parameters, initial adsorbate concentration was found to be the most dominant factor affecting the MB uptake. Concordantly, pH of the solution medium, raw material selection, and modification types were also found to be significant in MB adsorption. Results showed that in terms of raw material and modification types, sepiolite and chemical (acid and/or alkaline modification) and thermal treatments, respectively, come forward as the most powerful candidates for enhanced MB adsorption performance. Modifications applied on adsorbents should be evaluated separately, as there is no general rule applicable for all experimental conditions, and the strength of the contribution of modification type also depends on initial adsorbate concentration. Implementation of various imputation methods showed the importance of reporting experimental factors, such as surface area, in the literature. Range of applicability of the suggested modeling procedure was assessed to help experimenters in testing MB uptake under novel experimental conditions.

Abstract
In this work, the effective adsorption and the subsequent photodegradation activity, of TiO2 brookite nanoparticles, for the removal of anionic dyes, namely, Alizarin Red S (ARS) and Bromocresol Green (BCG) were studied. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of both dyes' concentration, contact time, and temperature. Photodegradation experiments for the adsorbed dyes were achieved using ultraviolet light illumination (6 W, λ = 365 nm). The single adsorption isotherms were fitted to the Sips model. The binary adsorption isotherms were fitted using the Extended-Sips model. The results of adsorption isotherms showed that the estimated maximum adsorption uptakes in the binary system were around 140 mg g-1 and 45.5 mg g-1 for ARS and BCG, respectively. In terms of adsorption kinetics, the uptake toward ARS was faster than BCG molecules in which the equilibrium was obtained in 7 min for ARS, while it took 180 min for BCG. Moreover, the thermodynamics results showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous for both anionic dyes. All these macroscopic competitive adsorption results indicate high selectivity toward ARS molecules in the presence of BCG molecules. Additionally, the TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully regenerated using UV irradiation. Moreover, molecular dynamics computational modeling was performed to understand the molecules' optimum coordination, TiO2 geometry, adsorption selectivity, and binary solution adsorption energies. The simulation energies distribution exhibits lower adsorption energies for ARS in the range from - 628 to - 1046 [Formula: see text] for both single and binary systems. In addition to that, the water adsorption energy was found to be between - 42 and - 209 [Formula: see text].

Abstract
With the improvement of environmental protection and standards, the recovery and recycling of copper ions released from industrial wastewater discharge has aroused sufficient research interest. A new adsorbent (ABsep) derived from natural sepiolite (Sep) by modification technology of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) or tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and flocs separation method for adsorption of Cu2+ in wastewater have been investigated in this paper. The changes of crystal structure and physicochemical properties of Sep during modification process showed that HDTMS and TEOS were loaded onto the Sep surface without inserting into the Sep interlayer structure. The adsorption experimental results presented a smaller amount of ABsep (1 g/L) achieved 97.5% removal of 50 mg/L Cu2+ at pH 6 and temperature of 298 K within a shorter contact time (50 min). It is interesting the adsorption process of Cu2+ on ABsep was spontaneous and exothermic, with physical adsorption dominating, as result of combination of physical adsorption, electrostatic gravitational force, and chemical reaction. Because of good physical-chemical adsorption performance of ABsep surface to Cu2+, high removal rates of Cu2+ from aqueous phase could be achieved after three adsorption regeneration cycles, this indicated the ABsep was expected to be a promising adsorbent of Cu2+ removal for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Herein, a simple approach was formed based on synthesizing different morphologies of ZnO and Au-ZnO as photocatalyst. In this study, ZnO and Au-ZnO were synthesized via a co-precipitation method and fully characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Three different ratios of Zn2+:OH- (1:2, 1:3, and 1:5) controlled the morphology of samples, which were made into spindle, star, and flower structures, respectively. Then, the photocatalytic activity was studied and compared. Their comparison showed that the flower morphology for ZnO and Au-ZnO was more effective in photocatalytic degradation and decolorization of methyl orange dye. Also, quantum and Monte Carlo (MC) calculations were carried out to investigate the adsorption of methyl orange (MO) molecules on ZnO(111) surface in the presence of Au or without Au in aqueous conditions by Monte Carlo adsorption locator simulations in the Materials Studio 2017 software. Au created a tendency to form a relatively strong interaction of MO with the ZnO(111) surface. The adsorption of MO on Au-ZnO(111) in the presence of Au was more significant than that of MO on ZnO(111), suggesting Au could significantly improve the reactivity of the methyl orange toward the ZnO(111).

Abstract
Massive oil leakage accidents and illegal discharge of oily wastewater have not just destroyed the sustainability of the ecological environment but caused permanent damage to marine ecosystems, which makes it urgent to handle it. In this paper, by means of sol-gel, micro-nan silica that grew from the surface of fibrous sepiolite was organically modified with 1 H, 1 H, 2 H, 2 H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDS). The superhydrophobic sepiolite/silica firmly attached to the surface of polyurethane sponge under the action of oily epoxy resin with strong adhesion. The sponge exhibited superhydrophobicity and excellent selective oil adsorption capacity (19.98-40 times of their own weight). More importantly, besides the effective separation of immiscible oil-water mixtures (the separation rate reached 98.72%), it could also efficiently separate oil with water and oil with salt solution emulsions. In addition, the sponges kept hydrophobic even after floating in extremely corrosive liquids for 20 h, showing a strong resistance to strong acidic as well as alkaline liquids. After 100 times of mechanical compression, the three-dimensional structure of sponge held still and the water contact angle was greater than 144°, demonstrating an excellent mechanical stability, which provided a reference for its practical application in oil-water separation.

Abstract
This work investigates the possibility of using scales of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax as a low-cost material for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) cationic dye in aqueous solutions. The physical-chemical characterizations of fish scales in natura (FS-in natura) revealed through thermogravimetry that they are composed of inorganic (hydroxyapatite) and organic (collagen) phases in relatively similar amounts. Spectroscopy analyses show that the interactions of MB with FS-in natura occur mainly in the organic phase layer of the adsorbent. The effects of initial MB concentration (5.0 × 10-4 and 5.0 × 10-3 mol L-1) and temperature (25-55 °C) on the adsorption efficiency of FS-in natura were evaluated. FS-in natura at MB concentration (5.0 × 10-3 and 5.0 × 10-4 mol L-1) exhibited the maximum adsorption capacities of 2.2 × 10-3 mol g-1 at 25 °C and 2.8 × 10-5 mol g-1 at 55 °C, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model represented the adsorption kinetics well, and the equilibrium isotherm data were better correlated using the Langmuir equation. The newly developed neural model demonstrated a high predictive capacity with an R-value greater than 0.99 and reduced values for mean squared error, root mean squared error, and mean absolute error equal to 0.003, 0.055, and 0.0348, respectively. The genetic algorithm was used to optimize the experimental conditions of the process. In conclusion, the sea bass scales have promising prospects as a low-cost alternative material for removing cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Various chemicals were explored in chemical combinations with two selected agrowastes in order to optimize, enhance, and improve their biosorption potential for the optimal and effective eradication of noxious, carcinogenic, and malignant cationic and basic dyes from wastewater. In this project, environmentally safe, economic, inexpensive, and widely available peels of Trapa natans (TP) and Citrullus lanatus (CP) were collected, dried, and pretreated with citric acid, revealing promising results. FT-IR and SEM characterizations of chemically changed biosorbents (C-TP and C-CP) have evidenced the presence of more secondary adsorption sites on their surfaces. These acid-modified biosorbents were employed to eliminate the hazardous and toxic basic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RAD) and Brilliant Green Dye (BLG) in batch mode processing. The Langmuir model was best fitted to equilibrium experimental data as compared to Freundlich and Temkin isothermal mathematical models with Qmax of 15.63 and 27.55 mg/g for RAD using C-TP and C-CP, respectively, whereas, for BLG on C-TP and C-CP, it was 128 and 189 mg/g, respectively. Therefore, the mechanism is related to chelation and ion exchange modes between adsorbate molecules and adsorbent surfaces, leading to homogeneous and monolayer adsorption and following pseudo-2nd-order kinetics in the best way. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG0, ΔS0, ΔH0, and ΔE0 are determined statistically for the adsorption performance of both novel chemically mutant biosorbents, which reflect that biosorption mechanisms are exothermic as well as spontaneous.

Abstract
Coal is primarily a fuel material but lately it has been utilized as an adsorbent for removing toxic metal ions. However, its usage for removing organic pollutants is not well studied. We report here a systematic study on the use of coal samples of varying carbon contents as adsorbents for removing Basic Blue 41 as a model cationic dye. The coal samples were collected from coal mines and were thoroughly characterized. The concentrations of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur contents were measured by CHNS analyzer. The concentrations of aluminum, silicon, sulphur, titanium and iron were determined by EDXRF, which corresponded to silicon dioxide (quartz) and aluminium silicate (kaolinite) as the major mineral inclusions, corroborated by XRD results and micrographs showing elemental maps determined from SEM-EDAX. The coal samples with low carbon content revealed higher adsorption capacity (qe ∼ 8.0-9.3 mg/g) of Basic Blue dye at optimized adsorbent dose (2 mg/mL), pH 9 and contact time (120 min). The adsorption kinetic studies satisfied pseudo second order model and the intra-particle diffusion of the dye was evident. The dye adsorption followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the qmax values ranged between 17 and 30 mg/g for low carbon content coal. The FT-IR, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and zeta potential results of the coal samples could explain the adsorption phenomenon of cationic dye. The kinetic and thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption of Basic Blue 41 dye was based on chemisorptions mechanism.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to improve engineering and synthetic chemistry, either through the use of eco-friendly starting materials or the proper design of novel synthesis routes. This reduces the contamination of toxic chemicals and helps the disposal of organic dyes. In the current work, a metal–organic framework-based Sr(ii) was fabricated to achieve the desired goal for dye removal and catalysis. Sr-MOF-based phosphotungstic acid (PWA/Sr-MOF) was hydrothermally synthesized to study its adsorption and catalytic activities. Remarkably, about 99.9% of crystal violet (CV) dye was removed using PWA/Sr-MOF within 90 min at room temperature. Various factors have been studied to investigate the optimum conditions such as pH of solution, initial dye concentration, contact time, and temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of CV dye was reached after 90 min and well fitted the pseudo-second kinetic order and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Coumarin and xanthene reactions were chosen to test the catalytic activity of the prepared PWA/Sr-MOF at 373 K. Furthermore, structural and chemical characterization of the fabricated samples was obtained using FT-IR, XRD, TGA, DTA, TEM, EDX, and XPS. PWA/Sr-MOF can be considered as a promising and green framework in the material design used to study catalytic and adsorption performances. There is an urgent need to improve engineering and synthetic chemistry, either through the use of eco-friendly starting materials or the proper design of novel synthesis routes.![]()

Abstract
Dye molecules are one of the most hazardous compounds for human and animal health and the excess intake of these materials can create toxic impacts. Several studies show the practicality of the adsorption process for dye uptake from wastewaters. In recent years, various adsorbents were used to be efficient in this process. Among all, polymeric adsorbents demonstrate great applicability in different environmental conditions and attract many researchers to work on them, although there is not enough reliable and precise information regarding these adsorbents. This study aims to investigate some influential parameters such as their type, physical properties, experimental conditions, their capacity, and further modeling along with a comparison with non-polymeric adsorbents. The influence of the main factors of adsorption capacity was studied and the dominant mechanism is explained extensively.

Abstract
This work addresses the rehabilitation of water contaminated with atrazine, entrapping it in a permeable and sustainable barrier designed with waste materials (sepiolite) and with biomaterials (cork and pine bark). Atrazine adsorption was assessed by kinetics and equilibrium assays and desorption was tested with different extraction solvents. Adsorbed atrazine was 100% recovered from sepiolite using 20% acetonitrile solution, while 40% acetonitrile was needed to leach it from cork (98%) and pine bark (94%). Continuous fixed-bed experiments using those sorbents as PRB were performed to evaluate atrazine removal for up-scale applications. The modified dose-response model properly described the breakthrough data. The highest adsorption capacity was achieved by sepiolite (23.3 (±0.8) mg/g), followed by pine bark (14.8 (±0.6) mg/g) and cork (13.0 (±0.9) mg/g). Recyclability of sorbents was evaluated by adsorption-desorption cycles. After two regenerations, sepiolite achieved 81% of atrazine removal, followed by pine with 78% and cork with 54%. Sepiolite had the best performance in terms of adsorption capacity/stability. SEM and FTIR analyses confirmed no significant differences in material morphology and structure. This study demonstrates that recycling waste/biowaste is a sustainable option for wastewater treatment, with waste valorization and environmental protection.

Abstract
Synthesizing functional nanomaterials from naturally abundant clay has always been of vital importance for resource utilization, however, the lack of new methods to effectively utilize low-grade clay presents a significant challenge. Herein, a calcium oxalate/sepiolite nanocomposite (SMN-x) was prepared by using the water bath heating method to convert the associated calcium carbonate in low-grade sepiolite into calcium oxalate. The developed composite was subsequently used to remove Pb(II) from the aqueous solutions. The SMN-3 adsorbent prepared by heating in a water bath at 90 °C for 3 h (with a high specific surface area of 234.14 m2·g−1) revealed the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 504.07 mg·g−1 at pH 5, which was about five times higher than that of sepiolite (105.57 mg·g−1). Further, the SMN-3 adsorbent possessed a much higher selectivity for Pb(II) as compared to the other metal ions. Moreover, the residue was noted to be stable and safe. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. During the adsorption process, ion exchange was noted to the main mechanism, however, it was also accompanied by electrostatic attraction. This study provides a novel strategy for the sustainable development of simple and efficient adsorbents by utilizing low-grade clay minerals.

Abstract
Methyl orange (MO) is a common anionic azo dye that is harmful to the environment and biology, so it must be treated innocuously before it can be discharged. Adsorption is an effective method to remove anionic dyes. Nanotube mineral is a natural one-dimensional adsorption material, and its unique morphology and structure endow it with good adsorption capacity. Although there are many related studies, there is a lack of in-depth discussions on the influence of nanotube's composition and structure on the adsorption of dyes and other pollutants. In this paper, two kinds of natural one-dimensional silicate minerals [halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and chrysotile nanotubes (ChNTs)] with similar morphology but slightly different compositions and crystal structures were used as adsorbents, and MO solution was used as simulate pollutants. It is the first time to discuss in depth the influence of the composition and structure of nanotube minerals on their charge properties and the adsorption performance of methyl orange dyes. It is found that HNTs and ChNTs have different adsorption capacity due to the difference of electronegativity between Al3+ and Mg2+ in the crystal, so they possess negative and positive charges respectively in near-neutral solution, which leads to the adsorption capacity of MO by ChNTs with positive charges which is greater than that of HNTs.
