Abstract
This paper describes the synthesis of a cerium(IV)-based molecular gear composed of a thioether functionalized phthalocyanine anchoring ligand, and a helical naphthalocyanine rotating cogwheel functionalized with four carbazoles. The naphthalocyanine ligand 9 was obtained after eleven steps (overall yield of 0.2 %) as a mixture of three geometrical isomers, two of which are chiral and exhibit high levels of steric hindrance, as shown by DFT calculations. Their attributions have been made using 1H-NMR based on their different symmetry groups. The ratio of isomers was also determined and the prochiral C4h naphthalocyanine shown to be the major compound (55 %). Its heteroleptic complexation with cerium (IV) and the anchoring phthalocyanine ligand 10 gave the targeted molecular gear in a 16 % yield.

Abstract
Glycolic acid and lactic acid substituted zinc phthalocyanines were studied concerning their photophysical and photochemical properties in eight organic solvents (homogeneous medium) and in aqueous media with the presence of CTAB and PVP 360 surfactants. Solvent effects were investigated according to several physical solvent parameters, including studies that used more than one parameter at a time, such as the ET(30) scale and the Lippet-Mataga equation. Computational studies were realized and was found in good agreement with experimental data indicating J-type dimers' formation through hydrogen bonds, which may not affect the spectroscopic properties. Fluorescence lifetimes were recorded using a time-correlated single-photon counting setup (TCSPC) technique. The direct method (analyzing the phosphorescence decay curves of singlet oxygen at 1270 nm) was employed to study singlet oxygen quantum yields. Phthalocyanine macrocycle with lactic acid substituent showed better solvation arrangement than the glycolic derivative, which can be explained based on the presence of the methyl group bonded to the chain. The water solvation of Pc's in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB) and biocompatible polymer PVP 360 increses the importance of this study for appliance in photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Abstract
In this contribution we report on the synthesis, characterization and application of water-soluble zinc(II) phthalocyanines, which are decorated with four or eight umbelliferone moieties for photodynamic therapy (PDT). These compounds are linked peripherally to zinc(II) phthalocyanine by a triethylene glycol linker attached to pyridines, leading to cationic pyridinium units, able to increase the water solubility of the system. Beside their photophysical properties they were analyzed concerning their cellular distribution in human hepatocyte carcinoma (HepG2) cells as well as their phototoxicity towards HepG2 cells, Gram-positive (S. aureus strain 3150/12 and B. subtilis strain DB104) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli strain UTI89 and E. coli strain Nissle 1917). At low light doses and concentrations, they exhibit superb antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria as well as anti-tumor activity against HepG2. They are even capable to inactivate Gram-negative bacteria, whereas the dark toxicity remains low. These unique water-soluble compounds can be regarded as all-in-one type photosensitizers with broad applications ranges in the future.

Abstract
Chlorophyll, the essential green pigment in plants, is considered a promising natural photosensitizer (PS) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, it suffers from lower stability in the physiological conditions that depress its efficacy in the PDT. The combination of nanotechnology and PDT is becoming a promising approach to combat tumors. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), for example, are proposed as suitable carriers that can increase chlorophyll stability when conjugating together. In the present work, the impact of Au NPs conjugation in enhancing Chlorophyll b (Chl b) efficiency in the PDT of cancer cells has been emphasized. A chemical method using a natural product synthesized a novel Chlorophyll b-gold nanoparticles nanoconjugate (Chl b-Au NCs). The synthesized Chl b-Au NCs were characterized via UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF), Zeta potential, Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chl b is characterized by a formyl group (CHO) which is absent in Chl a. This group leads to the formation of an electrostatic reaction between the positive charge of Chl b and the negative charge present on the surface of the gold nanoparticles. Moreover, Chlorophyll b loading on the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) increases its photostability. The efficiency of the PDT was then studied on the MCF7 and the HepG2 cells using this conjugation. As a result, the prepared Chl b-Au NCs showed low dark toxicity, excellent photostability under laser irradiation of wavelength 650 nm, in addition to a significantly high PDT efficacy against tumor cells in vitro. This is due to the enhanced cellular uptake and the high reactive oxygen species (ROS) production upon laser irradiation. Therefore, the designed Chl b-Au NCs could be a photo-therapeutic agent for enhancing cancer therapy in future applications.

Abstract
This study reports the influence of CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) for formation of singlet oxygen using zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) dyes in colloidal solutions. Using a microluminescence surface scan technique it was possible to measure accurately the photon diffusion length, or photon mean free path, inside the medium. Analyses were performed for a range of QD concentrations. Photon diffusion length was assigned to the bimolecular singlet oxygen emission at 707 nm. Related singlet oxygen emission was predicted by observing quenching of the photon diffusion length measured at the specific oxygen emission as a function of QD concentration, being a nontrivial phenomenon related to the QD donors. Diffusion length measured at 707 nm increased with QD concentration; in the absence of QDs, as in pure ZnPc samples, the emission peak at 707 nm was not observed.

Abstract
The synthesis of the first examples of 8-fold α-aryloxy-substituted phthalocyanines is described. 3,6-Diiodophthalonitrile was used as a precursor for a series of 3,6-aryloxy-substituted phthalonitriles, and a lead-mediated macrocyclization was employed to afford the corresponding free-base phthalocyanine complexes. The optical, electrochemical, and aggregation properties of these complexes can be tuned by varying the substituents on the aryloxy groups or by changing the pH value.

Abstract
Protonation and aggregation of two metallophthalocyanines (zinc and magnesium) non-peripherally substituted with 1,4,7-trioxanonyl moieties were studied by steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Both compounds are easily protonated in organic solvents, but the central metal ion strongly affects the character of this process. In particular, the magnesium derivative forms the cis-diprotonated isomer observed for the first time in phthalocyanines, in contrast to its zinc counterpart which forms the typical trans-diprotonated isomer. In addition, studies performed on phthalocyanines substituted with n-butoxy groups at their non-peripheral positions indicated that the formation of the cis-diprotonated forms is a more common feature of alkoxy-substituted magnesium metallophthalocyanines, in contrast to derivatives with other metal ions. The cis-diprotonated forms of the magnesium derivatives are formed at much lower proton concentrations than the trans-diprotonated forms of their zinc counterparts. The cis-isomers were also found to have more advantageous photophysical properties for photoactive applications than the trans-isomers. Aggregation studies of the trioxanonyl phthalocyanines revealed that the magnesium derivative aggregates much more easily in non-coordinating solvents than its zinc counterpart. Both the derivatives form fluorescent aggregates, which is typically attributed to the presence of oxygen-to-metal intermolecular coordination preventing the formation of non-fluorescent face-to-face stacks. The results indicate that the oxygen-to-metal coordination plays a significant role in the studied systems and the stronger oxygen-coordination ability of magnesium ions compared to zinc ions may underlie the observed differences between the phthalocyanines metallated with these two ions.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal chalcogenides such as 2D MoS2 are considered prime candidate materials for the design of next generation optoelectronics. Functionalisation of these materials is considered to be a key step in tailoring their properties towards specific applications and unlocking their full potential. Here we present a van der Waals functionalisation strategy for creating MoS2 nanosheets decorated with free base phthalocyanine chromophores. The semiconducting sheets are found to intimately interact with these optoelectronically active chromophores, resulting in an electronic heterostructure that exhibits enhanced optoelectronic properties and exploitable charge transfer. We show that by utilising laterally confined MoS2 nanosheets, the conduction band of the semiconductor could be positioned between the chromophore's S1 and S2 states. Consequently, bidirectional photoinduced electron transfer processes are observed, with excitation of the functionalised nanosheet's semiconductor transition resulting in electron transfer to the phthalocyanine's LUMO, and excitation of the chromophore's S2 state leading to electron injection into the MoS2 conduction band. However, charge transfer from the dye's S1 transition to the MoS2 nanosheet is found to be thermodynamically unfavourable, resulting in intense radiative recombination. These findings may enable controlling and tuning the charge carrier density of semiconducting nanosheets via optical means through the exploitation of photoinduced electron transfer. Furthermore this work provides access to 2D semiconductor-hybrids with tailored absorption profiles and photoluminescence.

Abstract
Three phthalocyanine derivatives were synthesized and characterized: one modified with a racemic mixture of 1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and two other macrocycles modified with each one of the enantioenriched isomers (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and (S)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol. The compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis absorption, and excitation and emission spectra. Additionally, partition coefficient values and the quantum yield of the generation of oxygen reactive species were determined. Interestingly, the phthalocyanine containing a (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethoxy moiety showed higher quantum yield of reactive oxygen species generation than other compounds under the same conditions. In addition, the obtained fluorescence microscopy and cell viability results have shown that these phthalocyanines have different interactions with mammary MCF-7 cells. Therefore, our results indicate that the photochemical and biological properties of phthalocyanines with chiral ligands should be evaluated separately for each enantiomeric species.
