Structure, Properties and Applications of Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has emerged as a strong candidate for two-dimensional (2D) material owing to its exciting optoelectrical properties combined with mechanical robustness, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. Super-thin h-BN layers have gained significant attention from the scientific community for many applications, including nanoelectronics, photonics, biomedical, anti-corrosion, and catalysis, among others. This review provides a systematic elaboration of the structural, electrical, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of h-BN followed by a comprehensive account of state-of-the-art synthesis strategies for 2D h-BN, including chemical exfoliation, chemical, and physical vapor deposition, and other methods that have been successfully developed in recent years. It further elaborates a wide variety of processing routes developed for doping, substitution, functionalization, and combination with other materials to form heterostructures. Based on the extraordinary properties and thermal-mechanical-chemical stability of 2D h-BN, various potential applications of these structures are described.

Advanced Nano-Carriers for Anti-Tumor Drug Loading

Chemotherapy is one of the important means of tumor therapy. However, most of the anti-tumor drugs that currently used in clinic are hydrophobic non-specific drugs, which seriously affect the efficacy of drugs. With the development of nanotechnology, drug efficacy can be improved by selecting appropriate biodegradable nanocarriers for achieving the controlled release, targeting and higher bioavailability of drugs. This paper reviewed the research progress of anti-tumor drug nanoparticle carriers, which mainly summarized the materials used for anti-tumor drug nanoparticle carriers and their effects in anti-tumor drugs, as well as the targeted drug delivery methods of anti-tumor drugs based on nanocarriers.

Molecular Perspective of Nanoparticle Mediated Therapeutic Targeting in Breast Cancer: An Odyssey of Endoplasmic Reticulum Unfolded Protein Response (UPRER) and Beyond

Breast cancer (BC) is the second most frequent cause of death among women. Representing a complex and heterogeneous type of cancer, its occurrence is attributed by both genetic (gene mutations, e.g., BRCA1, BRCA2) and non-genetic (race, ethnicity, etc.) risk factors. The effectiveness of available treatment regimens (small molecules, cytotoxic agents, and inhibitors) decreased due to their poor penetration across biological barriers, limited targeting, and rapid body clearance along with their effect on normal resident cells of bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, and hair follicles. This significantly reduced their clinical outcomes, which led to an unprecedented increase in the number of cases worldwide. Nanomedicine, a nano-formulation of therapeutics, emerged as a versatile delivering module for employment in achieving the effective and target specific delivery of pharmaceutical payloads. Adoption of nanotechnological approaches in delivering therapeutic molecules to target cells ensures not only reduced immune response and toxicity, but increases the stability of therapeutic entities in the systemic circulation that averts their degradation and as such increased extravasations and accumulation via enhanced permeation and the retention (EPR) effect in target tissues. Additionally, nanoparticle (NP)-induced ER stress, which enhances apoptosis and autophagy, has been utilized as a combative strategy in the treatment of cancerous cells. As nanoparticles-based avenues have been capitalized to achieve better efficacy of the new genera of therapeutics with enhanced specificity and safety, the present study is aimed at providing the fundamentals of BC, nanotechnological modules (organic, inorganic, and hybrid) employed in delivering different therapeutic molecules, and mechanistic insights of nano-ER stress induced apoptosis and autophagy with a perspective of exploring this avenue for use in the nano-toxicological studies. Furthermore, the current scenario of USA FDA approved nano-formulations and the future perspective of nanotechnological based interventions to overcome the existing challenges are also discussed.

Investigation of the antifouling properties of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes by blending of boron nitride quantum dots

This study aims to investigate the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with boron nitride quantum dots (BNQD) for improving the antifouling performance. The composite membranes were synthesized by blending different amounts of BNQD (0.50, 1.00, and 2.00 wt.%) into PES with the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. UV-vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize BNQD. Moreover, porosity, pore size, contact angle, permeability, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, and antifouling properties were determined for composite membranes. The enhanced biological activity of BNQD was investigated based on antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, bacterial viability inhibition, and DNA cleavage studies. The BNQD showed 19.35 % DPPH radical scavenging activity and 76.45 % ferrous ion chelating activity at 500 mg/L. They also exhibited good chemical nuclease activity at all concentrations. BNQD had moderate antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms. Biofilm inhibition percentage of BNQD was determined as 82.31 % at 500 mg/L. Cell viability assay demonstrated that the BNQD showed strong cell viability inhibition 99.9 % at the concentration of 1000 mg/L. The porosity increased from 56.83 ± 1.17%-61.83 ± 1.17 % while BNQD concentration increased from 0 to 2.00 wt%. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of BNQD nanocomposite membranes also increased from 75.42 ± 0.56° to 65.34 ± 0.25°. The mean pore radius is far slightly changed from 16.47 ± 0.35 nm to 19.16 ± 0.22 nm. The water flux increased from 133.5 ± 9.5 L/m²/h (for pristine membrane) to 388.6 ± 18.8 L/m²/h (for PES/BNQD 2.00 wt% membrane). BSA flux increased from 38.8 ± 0.9 L/m²/h to 63.2 ± 2.7 L/m²/h up to 1.00 wt% amount of BNQD nanoparticles.

Impact of Bi Doping into Boron Nitride Nanosheets on Electronic and Optical Properties Using Theoretical Calculations and Experiments

In the present work, boron nitride (BN) nanosheets were prepared through bulk BN liquid phase exfoliation while various wt. ratios (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10) of bismuth (Bi) were incorporated as dopant using hydrothermal technique. Our findings exhibit that the optical investigation showed absorption spectra in near UV region. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Bi doping has led to various modifications in the electronic structures of BN nanosheet by inducing new localized gap states around the Fermi level. It was found that bandgap energy decrease with the increase of Bi dopant concentrations. Therefore, in analysis of the calculated absorption spectra, a redshift has been observed in the absorption edges, which is consistent with the experimental observation. Additionally, host and Bi-doped BN nanosheets were assessed for their catalytic and antibacterial potential. Catalytic activity of doped free and doped BN nanosheets was evaluated by assessing their performance in dye reduction/degradation process. Bactericidal activity of Bi-doped BN nanosheets resulted in enhanced efficiency measured at 0-33.8% and 43.4-60% against S. aureus and 0-38.8% and 50.5-85.8% against E. coli, respectively. Furthermore, In silico molecular docking predictions were in good agreement with in-vitro bactericidal activity. Bi-doped BN nanosheets showed good binding score against DHFR of E. coli (- 11.971 kcal/mol) and S. aureus (- 8.526 kcal/mol) while binding score for DNA gyrase from E. coli (- 6.782 kcal/mol) and S. aureus (- 7.819 kcal/mol) suggested these selected enzymes as possible target.

Boron oxynitride two-colour fluorescent dots and their incorporation in a hybrid organic-inorganic film

Bottom-up synthesis of fluorescent boron-nitride based dots is a challenging task because an accurate design of the structure-properties relationship is, in general, difficult to achieve. Incorporation of the dots into a solid-state matrix is also another important target to develop light-emitting devices. Two-colour fluorescent boron oxynitride nanodots have been obtained by a bottom-up synthesis route and incorporated into a hybrid organic-inorganic film. A combination of different analytical techniques such as XPS, XRD, TEM, UV-Vis, TGA-DTA and fluorescence has been used to characterise the structure, composition and properties of the boron oxynitride dots. The presence of defects in the boron oxynitride structure is the source of the two-colour fluorescence. The BN dots thermal stability is limited to around 100 °C; higher temperatures induce condensation of the structure, which leads to a lower emission. Upon incorporation into a hybrid organic-inorganic film deposited by spin-coating, the boron oxynitride dots maintain their fluorescence and have shown to be highly compatible with the sol-gel chemistry.
