Bismuth-based heterojunction nanocomposites for photocatalysis and heavy metal detection applications

Smartphone-Integrated Automated Sensor Employing Electrochemically Engineered 3D Bimetallic Nanoflowers for Hydrogen Peroxide Quantification in Milk

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), one of the reactive oxygen species in living beings, serves as a regulator of various cellular processes. However, excessive peroxide concentrations are linked to oxidative stress and promptly disrupt cellular components, leading to several pathological conditions in the body. Moreover, it is extremely reactive and has a limited lifetime; thus, H2O2 sensing remains a prominent focus of research. Enzymatic sensing probes were widely employed to detect H2O2 in the recent past; however, they are susceptible to intrinsic chemical and thermal instabilities, which decrease the reliability and durability of the surface. This research was designed to come up with a feasible solution to this problem. Herein, a novel nonenzymatic peroxidase-mimic three-dimensional (3D) bimetallic nanoflower has been synergistically engineered for quick sensing of H2O2. The sensor platform showed minimal resistance or enhanced charge transfer properties as well as remarkable analytical capability, having a broad linear range between 0.01 and 1 nM and a detection limit of 1.46 ± 0.07 pM. The probe responded to changes in H2O2 concentration in just 2.10 ± 0.02 s, making it a quick sensing platform for H2O2 tracking. This peroxidase-mimic nanozyme probe showed minimal sensitivity to interferants often seen in real-world sample matrices and possessed good recoveries ranging from 92.88 to 99.09% in milk samples. Further, a facile and user-friendly smartphone application (APP) named "HPeroxide-Check" was developed and integrated into the sensor to check the milk adulteration by detecting H2O2. It processes the current output obtained from the sensing interface and provides real-time peroxide concentrations in milk. The entire procedure of fabricating the probe is a single, highly robust step that takes only 10 min and is coupled with a smartphone APP, highlighting the sensor's quick manufacturing and deployment for automated H2O2 monitoring in industrial and point-of-care settings.

Natural Polymer Encapsulated Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-12 Composite toward Electrochemical Sensing of Antitumor Agent

Encapsulation of natural polymer pectin (Pec) into a zeolitic imidazolate framework-12 (ZIF-12) matrix via a simple chemical method toward anticancer agent gallic acid (GA) detection is reported in this work. GA, a natural phenol found in many food sources, has gained attention by its biological effects on the human body, such as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately and rapidly determine the GA level in humans. The encapsulation of Pec inside the ZIF-12 has been successfully confirmed from the physiochemical studies such as XRD, Raman, FTIR, and XPS spectroscopy along with morphological FESEM, BET, and HRTEM characterization. Under optimized conditions, the Pec@ZIF-12 composite exhibits wide linear range of 20 nM-250 μM with a detection limit of 2.2 nM; also, it showed excellent selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Furthermore, the real sample analysis of food samples including tea, coffee, grape, and pomegranate samples shows exceptional recovery percentage in an unspiked manner. So far, there is little literature for encapsulating proteins, enzymes, metals, etc., that have been reported; here, we successfully encapsulated a natural polymer Pec inside the ZIF-12 cage. This encapsulation significantly enhanced the composite electrochemical performance, which could be seen from the overall results. All of these strongly suggest that the proposed Pec@ZIF-12 composite could be used for miniaturized device fabrication for the evaluation of GA in both home and industrial applications.

Biological Renewable Cellulose-Templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O Nanocomposite Photocatalysts for the Degradation of Methylene Blue

Herein, Cellulose-templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O nanocomposites were prepared using biological renewable cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose-templated Cu-doped ZnO catalysts with different amounts of Cu as the dopants (1, 2, 3, and 4%) were prepared and denoted CZ-1, CZ-2, CZ-3, and CZ-4, respectively, for simplicity. The prepared catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), and 2% Cu-doped ZnO (CZ-2) showed the best catalytic performance (82%), while the pure ZnO, CZ-1, CZ-3, and CZ-4 catalysts exhibited MB dye degradation efficiencies of 54, 63, 65, and 60%, respectively. The best catalyst (CZ-2) was chosen to further improve the degradation efficiency. Different amounts of AgNO3 (10, 15, 30, and 45 mg) were used for the deposition of Ag2O on the surface of CZ-2 and denoted CZA-10, CZA-15, CZA-30, and CZA-45, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, CZA-15 showed remarkable degradation efficiency and degraded 94% of MB, while the CZA-10, CZA-30, and CZA-45 catalysts showed 90, 81, and 79% degradation efficiencies, respectively, under visible light within 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced catalytic performance could be due to the smaller particle size, the higher electron and hole separation and charge transfer efficiencies, and the lower agglomeration in the composite catalyst system. The results also demonstrated that the Cu-doped ZnO prepared with cellulose as a template, followed by the optimum amount of Ag2O deposition, could have promising applications in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Machine learning analysis to interpret the effect of the photocatalytic reaction rate constant (k) of semiconductor-based photocatalysts on dye removal

Photocatalytic reactions with semiconductor-based photocatalysts have been investigated extensively for application to wastewater treatment, especially dye degradation, yet the interactions between different process parameters have rarely been reported due to their complicated reaction mechanisms. Hence, this study aims to discern the impact of each factor, and each interaction between multiple factors on reaction rate constant (k) using a decision tree model. The dyes selected as target pollutants were indigo and malachite green, and 5 different semiconductor-based photocatalysts with 17 different compositions were tested, which generated 34 input features and 1527 data points. The Boruta Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) feature selection for the 34 inputs found that 11 inputs were significantly important. The decision tree model exhibited for 11 input features with an R2 value of 0.94. The SHAP feature importance analysis suggested that photocatalytic experimental conditions, with an importance of 59%, was the most important input category, followed by atomic composition (39%) and physicochemical properties (2%). Additionally, the effects on k of the synergy between the metal cocatalysts and important experimental conditions were confirmed by two feature SHAP dependence plots, regardless of importance order. This work provides insight into the single and multiple factors that affect reaction rate and mechanism.

Zinc Oxide and Magnesium-Doped Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Ameliorate Murine Chronic Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasma gondii causes a global parasitic disease. Therapeutic options for eradicating toxoplasmosis are limited. In this study, ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO NPs were prepared, and their structural and morphological chrematistics were investigated. The XRD pattern revealed that Mg-doped ZnO NPs have weak crystallinity and a small crystallite size. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the integration of Mg ions into the ZnO framework, producing the high-purity Mg-doped ZnO nanocomposite. TEM micrographs determined the particle size of un-doped ZnO in the range of 29 nm, reduced to 23 nm with Mg2+ replacements. ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO NPs significantly decreased the number of brain cysts (p < 0.05) by 29.30% and 35.08%, respectively, compared to the infected untreated group. The administration of ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO NPs revealed a marked histopathological improvement in the brain, liver, and spleen. Furthermore, ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO NPs reduced P53 expression in the cerebral tissue while inducing CD31 expression, which indicated a protective effect against the infection-induced apoptosis and the restoration of balance between free radicals and antioxidant defense activity. In conclusion, the study proved these nanoparticles have antiparasitic, antiapoptotic, and angiogenetic effects. Being nontoxic compounds, these nanoparticles could be promising adjuvants in treating chronic toxoplasmosis.

Design and synthesis of high performance magnetically separable exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell nanoparticles: a novel and eco-friendly photocatalyst toward removal of organic pollutants from water

Herein, a new visible-light active exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell nanoparticles (NPs) was synthesized as a magnetically separable photocatalyst. For an in-depth understanding of the magnetic photocatalyst's structural, morphological, and optical properties, the products were extensively characterized with FT-IR, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, FESEM, EDS, EDS-mapping, VSM, DRS, EIS, and photocurrent. The photocatalyst was then utilized to degrade Levofloxacin (LEVO) and Indigo Carmine (IC) by visible light at room temperature. The exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell NPs photocatalyst revealed 80% and 95.6% degradation efficiency for Levofloxacin and Indigo Carmine within 25 and 15 min, respectively. In addition, the optimal factors such as concentration, loading of photocatalyst, and pH were also assessed. Levofloxacin degradation mechanistic studies showed that electrons and holes significantly contribute to the photocatalytic process of photocatalyst degradation. In addition, after 5 times regeneration, exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell NPs remained as an excellent magnetic photocatalyst for the eco-friendly degradation of Levofloxacin and Indigo Carmine (76% and 90%), respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance of exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell nanoparticles (NPs) was mostly ascribed to the synergistic advantages of stronger visible light response, larger specific surface area, and the more effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Based on these results, the highly effective magnetic photocatalyst achieved better results than numerous studied catalysts in the literature. The degradation of Levofloxacin and Indigo Carmine under environmentally friendly conditions can be achieved using exfoliated g-C3N4/γ-Fe2O3/ZnO yolk-shell NPs (V) as an efficient and green photocatalyst. The magnetic photocatalyst was characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic methods, revealing a spherical shape and particle size of 23 nm. Additionally, the magnetic photocatalyst could be separated from the reaction mixture by a magnet without significantly reducing its catalytic activity.

A biogenesis construction of CuO@MWCNT via Chenopodium album extract: an effective electrocatalyst for synaptic plasticity neurodegenerative drug pollutant detection

Clioquinol (CLQ) is one of the most toxic halogenated neurodegenerative drugs, and its synaptic plasticity effect directly affects human health and the environment. Cupric oxide (CuO) is an ideal electrocatalyst owing to its earth-abundance, non-toxic nature, and cost-effectiveness. Since phenolate oxygen and pyridine nitrogen in CLQ act as an electron donor and pave the way for detection with Cu2+ ions in the CuO. Designing the architecture of CuO with a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) is a sensible strategy to improve the electrochemical activity of the developed sensor. Inspired by the bio-synthesis and green processing, we have demonstrated the in-situ synthesis of CuO nanosphere-decorated MWCNT by Chenopodium album leaf extract through a sonochemical approach and explored its electrochemical sensing performance toward CLQ. The physical comprehensive characterization of prepared nanocomposite was investigated by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. For comparison studies, the CuO nanosphere was prepared by the same preparation process without MWCNT. Based on the physical characterization outcomes, the morphological nature of CuO was observed to be a sphere-like structure, which was decorated on the MWCNT with an average crystallite size of 16 nm (± 1 nm). Based on the electrochemical studies, the fabricated nanocomposite exhibits a wider linear range of 0.025-1375 μM, with a minimum detection limit of 4.59 nM L-1 toward CLQ. The viability examination on the biological matrix obtained considerable spike recoveries.

Well-dispersed titanium dioxide and silver nanoparticles on external and internal surfaces of asymmetric alumina hollow fibers for enhanced chromium (VI) photoreductions

Heterogenous photocatalysis is a suitable alternative for wastewater treatment. The supporting of the solid catalyst in a porous material is suggested to facilitate catalyst recovery and reuse. Here we propose for the first time the evaluation of supporting silver (Ag)-decorated titanium dioxide (TiO₂) catalysts on internal and external surfaces of alumina hollow fibers with asymmetric pore size distribution. The produced catalysts were considered for Cr(VI) photoreductions. The ultrasound-assisted process potentialized the distribution of Ag nanoparticles on the TiO₂ surface. The loading of Ag nanoparticles at concentrations greater than 5 wt% was necessary to improve the TiO₂ activity for Cr(VI) photoreduction. The loading of Ag nanoparticles at 30 wt% improved the Cr(VI) photoreduction of the single TiO₂ catalyst from 40.49 ± 0.98 to 55.00 ± 0.83% after 180 min of reaction. Suspended and supported Ag-decorated TiO₂ catalysts achieved total Cr(VI) photoreduction after 21 h of reaction. The adjusted reaction rate constant with the externally supported Ag-TiO₂ catalyst was 3.57 × 10^-3 ± 0.18 × 10^-3 min^-1. Similar reaction rate constants were achieved with suspended and internally supported catalysts (approximately 2.70 × 10^-3 min^-1). After 10 sequential reuses, all catalysts presented similar Cr(VI) photoreductions of approximately 66%. Nevertheless, the use of the externally supported catalyst is suggested for Cr(VI) photoreductions due to its superior catalyst activity at least in the first reuse cycles.

Construction of functionalized carbon nanotube@metal oxide nanocomposite for high-performance electrochemical measurement of antipyretic drug in water samples

Acetaminophen (AP) acts as supportive clinical therapy for fever and dysmenorrhea. An overdose of AP may result in severe adverse diseases, such as liver dysfunction. In addition, AP is a key-listed environmental pollutant, which is difficult to degrade in the environment and has serious effects on living bodies. Therefore, the simple and quantitative determination of AP is highly relevant today. In this work, tin dioxide (SnO2) nanoparticles with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (f-MWCNT) as a hybrid composite were prepared by hydrothermal-assisted synthesis. The composite material was characterized by various spectral, morphological, and electrochemical tests. Electrochemical investigations were conducted using a SnO2@f-MWCNT-reinforced electrode for the detection of AP. The composite electrode exhibited better functional properties, which facilitated electron transfer and enhanced electrical conductivity. The calculated low detection limit (LOD) of 0.36 nM is with a wide linear range of concentration from 0.001 to 673 µM. Additionally, the SnO2@f-MWCNT-modified electrode exhibited good anti-interference capability, repeatability, reproducibility, storage, and operational stability. The developed SnO2@f-MWCNT-modified electrode was applied to practical analysis in diverse water matrices (river, drinking, and pond) with acceptable recovery percentages. A synthesized nanoscale metal oxide electrocatalyst is of great interest and an active research area that serves as a foundation for the development of new, cost-effective electrochemical antibiotic drug sensors.

Bismuth-based nanostructured photocatalysts for the remediation of antibiotics and organic dyes

A serious threat to human health and the environment worldwide, in addition to the global energy crisis, is the increasing water pollution caused by micropollutants such as antibiotics and persistent organic dyes. Nanostructured semiconductors in advanced oxidation processes using photocatalysis have recently attracted a lot of interest as a promising green and sustainable wastewater treatment method for a cleaner environment. Due to their narrow bandgaps, distinctive layered structures, plasmonic, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties, and desirable physicochemical features, bismuth-based nanostructure photocatalysts have emerged as one of the most prominent study topics compared to the commonly used semiconductors (TiO₂ and ZnO). In this review, the most recent developments in the use of photocatalysts based on bismuth (e.g., BiFeO₃, Bi₂MoO₆, BiVO₄, Bi₂WO₆, Bi₂S₃) to remove dyes and antibiotics from wastewater are thoroughly covered. The creation of Z-schemes, Schottky junctions, and heterojunctions, as well as morphological modifications, doping, and other processes are highlighted regarding the fabrication of bismuth-based photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic capabilities. A discussion of general photocatalytic mechanisms is included, along with potential antibiotic and dye degradation pathways in wastewater. Finally, areas that require additional study and attention regarding the usage of photocatalysts based on bismuth for removing pharmaceuticals and textile dyes from wastewater, particularly for real-world applications, are addressed.

Metal organic frameworks as promising sensing tools for electrochemical detection of persistent heavy metal ions from water matrices: A concise review

Water bodies are being polluted rapidly by disposal of toxic chemicals with their huge entrance into drinking water supply chain. Among these pollutants, heavy metal ions (HMIs) are the most challenging one due to their non-biodegradability, toxicity, and ability to biologically hoard in ecological systems, thus posing a foremost danger to human health. This can be addressed by robust, sensitive, selective, and reliable sensing of metal ions which can be achieved by Metal organic frameworks (MOF) based electrochemical sensors. In the present era, MOFs have caught greater interest in a variety of applications including sensing of hazardous pollutants such as heavy metal ions. So, in this review article, types, synthesis and working mechanism of MOF based sensors is explained to give general overview with updated literature. First time, detailed study is done for sensing of metal ions such as chromium, mercury, zinc, copper, manganese, palladium, lead, iron, cadmium and lanthanide by MOFs based electrochemical sensors. The use of MOFs as electrochemical sensors has attractive success story along with some challenges of the area. Considering these challenges, we attempted to highlight the milestone achieved and shortcomings along with future prospective of the MOFs for employing it in electrochemical sensing devices for HMIs. Finally, challenges and future prospects have been discussed to promote the development of MOFs-based sensors in future.

On spot detection of nickel and cobalt from exhausted batteries by a smart electrochemical sensor

This work presents the realization and the application of an user-friendly electrochemical platform based on screen-printed electrodes for the simultaneous determination of nickel and cobalt ions in real samples by means of square wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV). The sensor was realized by electrodepositing in situ a bismuth film onto graphite screen-printed electrodes (GSPEs). The sensor surface was fully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental conditions for the determination of nickel and cobalt in the form of dimethylglyoximate complexes were studied and optimized. Linear calibration curves for Ni(II) and Co(II), determined individually and together, in the range 10-40 μg/L for nickel and 10-60 μg/L for cobalt, respectively, were obtained. The limits of detection for nickel and cobalt determination were 2.5 μg/L and 2.4 μg/L, respectively. The performance of the sensor in terms of reproducibility and selectivity was also studied. The applicability of the developed platform was assessed by determining nickel and cobalt in samples deriving from an industrial process of recycling exhausted batteries and in soil samples.

THE EFFECT OF DISPERSION TIME ON THE STRUCTURE AND THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SYSTEMS BASED ON POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL AND MONTMORILLONITE

In this work, the effect of ultrasonic dispersion time on the structural and thermophysical properties of nanocomposites was studied. Model systems were made based on polyethylene glycol and montmorillonite. All samples had the same composition and filler content (5% by weight), the ultrasonic treatment time was from 5 to 12 minutes. The methods of wide-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry were used to establish the dependence of the properties of the systems on the dispersion time. Data analysis of the obtained results showed that the variation of ultrasonic dispersion time significantly affects the properties of polymer nanocomposites. As the mixing time increases, the interplanar distance of montmorillonite increases, which indicates an increase in the degree of intercalation of the polymer matrix. At the same time, the crystallinity of the nanocomposite decreases, which corresponds to the increase in the area of the polymer/filler boundary layer. The melting temperature of the nanocomposite increases with increasing dispersion time. This trend is a consequence of the complication of the thermal movement of polymer molecules due to the presence of a developed surface of the filler. It is shown that with an increase in the sonication time, the part of the immobilized amorphous fraction of the polymer increases. This is explained by the fact that the polymer intercalated in the interlayer space of montmorillonite loses its ability to cooperative movement, that is, to glass transition. It was established that the maximum improvement of system properties is observed at a dispersion time of 10 min. In this state, the montmorillonite particles are most stratified, which leads to the maximum increase in the area of the boundary layer. During further mixing, processes of aggregation of montmorillonite particles and destruction of polymer molecules occur, which leads to the loss of the desired properties of the nanocomposite. Finding the optimal mixing time of a polymer nanocomposite makes it possible to obtain the desired properties of systems with a defined composition.

A review on bismuth-based materials for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants

Modernized lifestyle and increased industrialization threaten living organisms because of the pollutants released from industries and household wastes. The presence of even small amounts of pollutants (organic pollutants (OPs) and inorganic pollutants-heavy metals (HMs)) shows significant effects. Thus wastewater treatment is urgently needed before being subjected to use. Many methods and materials have been developed and reported for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. This review focused on the removal of both OPs and HMs using bismuth-based (Bi-based) materials because of their low toxicity and excellent properties compared to other metals. Bi-based materials as a photocatalyst for photodegradation of OPs are discussed in detail with synthesis methods. Further, since few reviews are available on the Bi-based material for the removal and sensing of HMs, this topic was intentionally summarized. About 200 published articles and reviews have been reviewed here. Additionally, the key point that needs to be focused on the development of Bi-based photocatalysts for the removal of OPs and for upgrading the Bi-based materials as adsorbents for HMs are conferred in the outlook. This will help many researchers in their upcoming work.

Outlook on bismuth-based photocatalysts for environmental applications: A specific emphasis on Z-scheme mechanisms

Semiconductor photocatalysis is thought to be a viable solution for addressing the growing problem of environmental pollution. Bismuth (Bi) metal oxides can function as a direct plasmonic photocatalyst or cocatalyst to accelerate the photogenerated charge separation and thus improve their photocatalytic activity. Hence, Bi-based photocatalysts have received a lot of attention due to their extensive environmental applications, including pollutant remediation and energy concepts. Massive efforts have been undertaken in the recent decade to find superior Bi-metal oxides (Bi₂XO_6, X = MO, W, or Cr) and to uncover the corresponding photocatalytic reaction mechanism for the degradation of organic contaminants in water. Herein, the unique crystalline and electronic properties and main synthesis methods, as well as the major Bi-Based direct Z-scheme photocatalysts, are timely discussed and summarized in their usage in water treatment. Besides, the impact of Bi₂XO₆ in energy storage devices and solar energy conversion is reviewed as an energy application. Finally, the future development and challenges of Z-scheme-based Bi₂XO₆ photocatalysts are briefly explored, summarized, and forecasted.

Optical diagnostic imaging and therapy for thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer, as one of the most common endocrine cancers, has seen a surge in incidence in recent years. This is most likely due to the lack of specificity and accuracy of its traditional diagnostic modalities, leading to the overdiagnosis of thyroid nodules. Although there are several treatment options available, they are limited to surgery and ¹³¹I radiation therapy that come with significant side effects and hence cannot meet the treatment needs of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma with very high malignancy. Optical imaging that utilizes optical absorption, refraction and scattering properties, not only observes the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, or even the whole organism to assist in diagnosis, but can also be used to perform optical therapy to achieve targeted non-invasive and precise treatment of thyroid cancer. These applications of screening, diagnosis, and treatment, lend to optical imaging's promising potential within the realm of thyroid cancer surgical navigation. Over the past decade, research on optical imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer has been growing year by year, but no comprehensive review on this topic has been published. Here, we review key advances in the application of optical imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer and discuss the challenges and potential for clinical translation of this technology.

Determination of heavy metals in water using an FTO electrode modified with CeO2/rGO nanoribbons prepared by an electrochemical method

The rGO/CeO₂/FTO nanocomposite modified electrode was prepared by an electrochemical method. A simple and highly sensitive electrochemical sensing platform for electrochemical rGO and modified CeO₂ nanoribbons directly on FTO electrodes was developed. Simultaneous determination of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ used the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) method. The method was simple to operate, and CeO₂ nanobelts could be obtained simultaneously by electrodeposition and reduction of GO without further processing. This is an environmentally friendly electrochemical method to obtain modified electrodes under mild conditions. The experimental results showed that the linear calibration curves of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ are 1–300 and 0.2–500 μg L⁻¹, respectively. At the same time, no interference from other coexisting metal ions was found during the detection process, which proved that the modified electrode had good stability and repeatability.

A type II heterojunction α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 for the heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of phenol

The heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction is an effective method of chemical oxidation to remove phenol in wastewater with environmental friendliness and sustainability. Herein, the composite α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄, as a catalyst of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction, has been synthesized by hydrothermal-calcination method using the abundant and low-cost FeCl₃·6H₂O and g-C₃N₄ as raw materials. The influence of the annealing temperature during calcination was also investigated. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra of samples show that the composite α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄ possesses the widest light response range. Furthermore, the transient photocurrent response curves demonstrated the strongest intensity of α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄. The annealed α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄ is indicative of the highest degradation efficiency in all samples due to the improvement of the charge transfer ability caused by the tight heterojunction structure. The results of the scavenger trapping experiments show that the hydroxyl radical was the main active species in degradation. Based on experimental results, a type II heterojunction should be built in the composite α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄, driving the photoelectrons transfer and migration by internal electronic field. This work provides a facile and new method to synthesize α-Fe₂O₃/g-C₃N₄ as an effective heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for environmental remediation.

Given the important aspects of wound healing approaches, in this work, an innovative biocompatible nanobiocomposite scaffold was designed and prepared based on cross-linked lignin–agarose hydrogel, extracted silk fibroin solution, and zinc chromite (ZnCr₂O₄) nanoparticles.
