Abstract
Introduction About a decade after the introduction of palliative care teaching for undergraduate nurses and medical students in Uganda, no research has examined students' knowledge and self-efficacy to provide palliative and end-of-life care and their correlates. Aims To: (1) estimate final-year undergraduate nursing and medical students' knowledge of and self-efficacy to provide palliative and end-of-life care, (2) identify correlates of knowledge and self-efficacy to provide palliative and end-of-life care. Design A multicentre cross-sectional quantitative study. Setting/participants Final-year undergraduate medical and nursing students in eight medical and nursing schools in Uganda. Instruments included biodata sheet, the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing questionnaire and the Palliative Care Self-Efficacy scale. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA version 14.0. Results The mean age of the participants (n = 466) was 24.45 ± 3.31 years. Participants' knowledge of palliative care scores was low in all domains 'Philosophy and principles of palliative care' 1.46 ± 0.93 (range: 0-4), 'Psychosocial and spiritual care' 0.61 ± 0.73 (range: 0-3) and 'Management of pain and other symptoms' 6.32 ± 1.75 (range: 0-13). Predictors of knowledge were Gender (p = 0.0242), course of study (p = 0.0001) and religion (p = 0.0338). Participants had very low self-efficacy scores in the three domains of the Palliative Care Self-Efficacy scale. Conclusion Participants generally demonstrated limited knowledge and insufficient self-efficacy in providing palliative and end-of-life care. There is a need to integrate and strengthen practical, pedagogical and experiential teaching, review the palliative care curriculum. Future evaluative, longitudinal and interventional as well as qualitative studies are needed to gain deeper insights into this topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are the most involved healthcare professionals in end-of-life care. Although scientific evidence has demonstrated the effectiveness of specific education in this aspect, the optimal timing of its delivery has not been identified. AIM To determine the characteristics of fear of death and attitudes toward end-of-life care among nursing students during academic education. DESIGN This longitudinal observational study was conducted between October 2019 and June 2023. PARTICIPANTS A total of 486 questionnaires were administered to nursing students from two Spanish faculties. METHODS A data collection sheet was developed to track various sociodemographic variables, which was distributed along with the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale and the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying scale. RESULTS In the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying scale, the lowest score for Factor I was observed in the third year (F(3,228) = 153.5, p < 0.001) and for Factor II in the second year (χ2(3) = 186.45, p < 0.001). The best attitude was demonstrated in the final academic year, with statistically significant differences. On the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale, the highest fear, both in the overall score and in all four factors, was noted in the first year and the lowest in the final year. We found a significant effect of time on the total score (F(3,300) = 7.43, p < 0.001), with differences observed between the first and other years (p < 0.001). The same pattern was found in Factor 3, fear of the death of others (F(3,300) = 18.7, p < 0.001), and in Factor 4, fear of dying of others. CONCLUSIONS It is suggested that education be provided on fear of death in the first year, person- and family-centered care in the second year, and end-of-life care in the third year, with interventions lasting more than two months.

Abstract
ObjectiveInterprofessional care is integral to end-of-life (EOL) and palliative care (PC) and may be suited for EOL and PC education.We evaluate the impact of an interprofessional EOL care curriculum on participants, during the course, on completion and 4 years laterusing quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (open-ended questions and interviews) methods.The course included 14 fifth and sixth-year medical students, 9 social work students and 7 nursing students enrolled in master's degree programmes. Seventeen participants completed questionnaires 4 years later and eight participated in interviews.On postcourse questionnaires, participants attributed high value to interprofessional education (IPE) (4.77/5±0.50 on a Likert scale). Four years later, participants reported that IPE impacted their professional (3.65/5±1.11) and personal lives (3.94/5±1.09) and found PC IPE important (4.88/5±0.33).Conventional content analysis showed that the course enabled discussion of death and dying and provided an opportunity for a personal-emotional journey. It offered an approach to EOL care and an opportunity to experience interprofessional teamwork at the EOL resulting in behavioural change.Interprofessional EOL education resulted in meaningful and lasting self-reported personal and professional behavioural outcomes.

Abstract
The demand for palliative and end-of-life nursing is increasing with the aging US population. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing published recommendations for incorporating palliative and end-of-life care across nursing curriculum to prepare the future workforce. However, recommendations regarding teaching end-of-life content are limited. This project aimed to integrate and evaluate the outcomes of end-of-life education introduced in a prelicensure nursing program. Using a documentary created by the American Nurses Foundation, students had the opportunity to discuss common themes in end-of-life care, practice morgue care in the simulation laboratory, and practice reflective journaling. The students' preevaluations and postevaluations indicated that the educational program significantly increased their confidence in providing end-of-life care and support to patients and families, demonstrating the importance of end-of-life curricula in nursing school.

Abstract
Studies reveal that nursing students rank hospice nursing among their least preferred career choices. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between nursing students' intention to work in hospice care in the future and their attitudes toward caring for dying patients, death anxiety, personal and/or professional experience of caring for dying patients, and type of nursing program studied. In this cross-sectional study, 200 nursing students completed an online survey based on the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale and the Turkish Death Anxiety Scale. Only 11% of the respondents were found to express interest in working in hospice care in the future. Studying in the accelerated program for nonnursing Bachelor of Arts graduates predicted a higher intention to work in hospice care in the future, than studying in the generic program (β = 0.27, P < .001). Completion of clinical experience in a medical ward predicted lower intention (β = -0.21, P < .01). These findings suggest that nursing students in the accelerated program for nonnursing Bachelor of Arts graduates should be provided with appropriate experience and support to maintain their interest in hospice nursing. Clinical experience in medical wards does not seem to be a good substitute for clinical experience in hospice care.

Abstract
This study examined nurses' attitudes towards death, anxiety levels, and socio-demographic characteristics affecting their attitudes towards death. Three hundred and eighty-four nurses participated in the study. A questionnaire form, the Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire were applied to the nurses. Nurses' attitudes towards death were positive and their level of fear of death was low. Approach acceptance was high in younger ones; the escape acceptance score was higher in single ones. The neutral acceptance score was higher in those who received training on death. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between nurses' anxiety level and escape acceptance score. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the length of working years of nurses and the escape acceptance and approach acceptance. Nurses should be prepared for and supported on death with in-service training. It will be useful to provide these training programs to nursing students during their education process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increasing demand for universal, high-quality access to palliative care in Austria. To ensure this, the implementation of palliative care in the medical studies curriculum is essential. This is the first study to investigate the state of undergraduate palliative care education at Austrian medical schools. METHODS For this mixed-methods study with concurrent embedded design, expert interviews and online surveys were conducted between March and August 2022. The interviews were subjected to a thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke, while the questionnaires were analysed descriptively-statistically. For the final integration, the results of both methods for each topic are presented and discussed complementarily. Both the primary qualitative and supportive quantitative data were collected to combine the advantages of the in-depth nature of the qualitative data and the consistent structure of the quantitative data to provide a more precise representation of the state of teaching. RESULTS Twenty-two persons participated in the study, of whom twenty-one participated in the interview and eight in the questionnaire. The participants were experts in palliative care teaching at Austrian medical schools. Currently, palliative care is taught at seven out of the eight universities. Large differences were found in the number of hours, organisation, teaching formats, and interprofessional education. At present, three universities have a chair for palliative care and at least five universities have access to a palliative care unit. CONCLUSION Undergraduate palliative care education in Austria is very heterogeneous and does not meet the minimum standards suggested by the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) curriculum recommendations. However, several universities are planning measures to expand palliative care teaching, such as the introduction of mandatory teaching or the establishment of new teaching formats. Better coordination and networking within and between universities would be beneficial for the expansion and quality of teaching.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although various studies reported on educational methods for end-of-life care, there is lack of evidence on how nursing students experience simulated death. OBJECTIVES This study explored the experiences of undergraduate nursing students who participated in a guided death experience. DESIGN The research utilized a qualitative descriptive design. SETTINGS The research was conducted at a Japanese university nursing school. PARTICIPANTS A total of 82 nursing students were recruited to complete an end-of-life course in which they participated in a guided death experience as part of their third-year curriculum. METHODS Descriptions of the guided death experience were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Nursing students' experiences in the guided death experience fell into two main categories: "subjective experience of immersing oneself in the world of the patient who is dying" and "formation of nursing perspectives of end-of-life care." The former focused on subjective experiences of nursing students vividly expressing their own emotions such as grief, anger, fear, and depression during the guided death experience process. The latter expressed recognition of the essence of end-of-life-care through the guided death experience, such as thinking about needs of the person who is dying, being present, and listening to the individual. CONCLUSIONS In end-of-life nurse education, the guided death experience allows students to face first-person death. This fosters a core view of nursing in palliative and end-of-life care. Overall, the guided death experience is an important means of preparatory education for relevant clinical practice.

Abstract
Purpose: To explore the death experiences of nursing students in their personal lives. Methods: This study employed a qualitative descriptive design using the semi-structured interview approach. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit 24 nursing students from September 2020 to July 2022. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's analysis method. Lincoln and Guba's criteria was used to evaluate the trustworthiness of the data. Results: Four main themes emerged from the interviews: (a) reactions to encounters with death; (b) adjustment strategies; (c) personal growth induced by the death experiences; and (d) professional reflections for preparing nurse role. Conclusions: Although the death of a loved one makes nursing students suffer from grief and emotional distress, we show that the experience promotes the personal growth and professional competencies of nursing students and thereby, developing their overall aptitude towards the profession. Death experiences of nursing students have shown to allow them to reflect on both life and death, to consider the demands of the nursing profession, and to provide foundation for nursing students to be more empathetic and compassionate when facing death in the future. Exploring death experiences of nursing students is vital in better providing better quality education and personal support for nursing students.

Abstract
Positive attitudes and a sense of competence toward end-of-life care are the key to adequately support terminally ill patients. This qualitative study aims to explore healthcare students' attitudes toward caring for terminally ill patients. Eleven students from the University of Applied Health Sciences in Switzerland participated in focus groups. Attitudes were overall positive. Most participants felt that supporting dying patients was a way to achieve professional fulfillment. However, most students felt not competent in palliative care and lacking experience. They wanted to receive better training, more specifically in good practices and appropriate behaviors. Our study fills a knowledge gap regarding the opinions and pedagogical needs of healthcare students, and highlights the importance of experiencing end-of-life care during the educational process. We recommend early exposure to terminally ill patients and appropriate attitudes toward death and dying as part of the bachelor's curriculum, accompanied by benevolent guidance from teachers and health professionals.

Abstract
Les étudiants en médecine sont exposés à des risques psychosociaux responsables d’un plus haut niveau d’anxiété, de dépression, de syndrome d’épuisement professionnel que la population française de même âge. Lors de la première vague de la pandémie COVID-19 en France, un certain nombre d’entre eux se sont mobilisés pour venir en aide aux hôpitaux débordés. Au travers de cette expérience, ils ont rapporté une détresse psychologique modérée, laquelle était nuancée par différentes capacités de résilience. Cette étude explore les ressources et les difficultés d’étudiants en médecine de l’université Paris-Saclay (France) engagés lors de la première vague dans les services hospitaliers. Si l’exposition à la mort et les conditions de soins dégradés ont pu impacter leurs motivations à étudier, l’expérience a également permis à certains d’entre eux d’acquérir des compétences complémentaires, de participer à l’effort collectif, d’éviter le confinement généralisé et d’aider les autres soignants. La prise en compte de ces facteurs de résilience au regard des difficultés rencontrées (exacerbées par la crise sanitaire, mais qui existaient déjà avant cette dernière) permet de nourrir la réflexion sur l’amélioration de la qualité de vie des étudiants en médecine dans le système universitaire médical français.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses have an essential role in providing high-quality palliative care to patients and their families. Hence, they require adequate palliative care education. However, there is only limited insight into how final-year nursing students perceive palliative care education in undergraduate nursing programs. This study aimed to describe nursing students' perspectives of the development needs of palliative care education. An additional two aims emerged based on the collected data, namely, to describe the preferred education for palliative care and the factors which promote or hinder palliative care learning during undergraduate nursing studies. METHODS The research was guided by a descriptive qualitative approach and applied inductive content analysis. The frequencies (f) of identified codes (reduced expressions) were counted to show the noteworthiness of each category in relation to the entirety. The participants were final-year nursing students (n = 766) who had participated in a national survey. RESULTS The inductive content analysis identified three unifying categories. The first was 'Development needs and views of palliative care education' (f = 524), which consisted of the main categories 'the need to develop palliative care education' (f = 414) and 'meaning of palliative care and its education' (f = 110). Secondly 'Preferred types of palliative care education' (f = 1379), including the main categories 'teaching contents in palliative care education' (f = 905), 'teaching methods for palliative care learning' (f = 393), and 'placement of palliative care studies' (f = 81). Thirdly 'The facilitators and barriers to palliative care learning' (f = 401), consisting of the main categories 'factors facilitating palliative care learning' (f = 66) and 'barriers to palliative care learning' (f = 335). CONCLUSIONS This study provides detailed information about nursing student's perspectives of palliative care education and its development needs. Hence, the results are relevant to decision-makers who want to develop undergraduate nursing curricula. This study highlights that palliative care education should be developed by ensuring that all students have equal access to palliative care education provided by highly competent teachers. Possibilities for clinical placements or visits to palliative care units during the education should also be improved. The participating students felt unprepared to provide high-quality palliative care even though they responded that palliative care is an important topic in their nursing studies.

Abstract
This descriptive qualitative study was planned to determine the views of intern nursing students about death and end-of-life care. The study was completed with 12 intern students based on the criterion of data saturation. As a result of the study, the categories of 'end,' 'uncertainty,' 'fear,' 'beginning,' 'helplessness' under the theme of death, 'ensuring peace,' 'continuing communication' 'providing psychosocial/spiritual support,' 'acting in conformity with principles of ethics/morality,' 'continuing to provide physical care,' 'supporting the family,' 'making the best use of the limited remaining time or helping the patient's last wishes come true' under the theme of end-of-life care emerged.

Abstract
CONTEXT To provide effective end-of-life care education for health professions students, it is important to understand students' views of death in addition to their perceptions of educational needs and preferences. However, there is a lack of studies addressing interindividual variability in perceptions of end-of-life care educational needs among health professions students. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify latent profiles of perceptions of end-of-life care educational needs among health professions students and examine whether the demographic characteristics, death-related events, death attitude, and death anxiety differed by need subgroup. METHODS Through convenience sampling, health professions students from three universities in China were recruited between March 2020 and June 2020. Data were collected using a demographic information and death-related experience questionnaire, the End-of-Life Care Curriculum Needs Questionnaire, the End-of-Life Care Educational Needs Questionnaire, the Death Attitudes Profile-Revised, and the Templer's Death Anxiety Scale. RESULTS A total of 1048 students completed the survey. Two classes of perceptions of end-of-life care educational needs were identified: approximately 29.80% of students belonged to a medium-need group class (1), and 70.20% belonged to a high-need group class (2). Being female and having knowledge of end-of-life care significantly increased the probability of membership in class 2. Students with the two latent profiles reported having varied curriculum needs. In addition, a positive attitude toward death and low death anxiety increased the probability of membership in class 1. CONCLUSION Two classes of perceptions of end-of-life care educational needs were identified, and these classes were significantly associated with sex and death-related knowledge (P < 0.05). Interindividual variability should be considered in the future development of end-of-care curricula.

Abstract
Background and aim of the work: Nursing education plays a key role in preparing future nurses to deal with dying patients, which represents one of the most emotionally involving aspect of nursing. The aims of the study were to explore nursing students’ attitudes towards care of dying patients in three different European contexts and to analyze the variables that can influence them. Methods: We conducted an international multicenter cross-sectional study. We administered the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale form B (FATCOD-B) and a demographic form to 569 students, enrolled in three Nursing Programmes in different countries (Italy, Spain and United Kingdom), who accepted to participate in the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 26.0. Results: Median total FATCOD-B scores indicated intermediate levels of students’ attitudes towards care for dying patients, with a statistically significant difference among the three student groups. The median total FATCOD-B scores did not statistically significantly change in students with different age, gender, year of study, religious beliefs, nursing education on palliative care, previous experiences of dying patient care and personal grieving. Conclusions: In our study, nursing students feel partially prepared in caring for dying patients and their attitudes do not change as the course of study progresses. No selected variables had an impact on students’ attitudes towards palliative care. Since nurses play a vital role in ensuring the quality of care, education on end-of-life care should be offered as a core part of undergraduate nursing programs. (www.actabiomedica.it)

Abstract
Self-efficacy and confidence levels among newly graduated nurses who participated in an end-of-life simulation were compared with nurses who had been practicing for no more than a year but had not participated in an end-of-life simulation. The study included a pretest-and-posttest evaluation of an end-of-life simulation intervention during a new graduate residency program among newly graduated nurses to improve self-efficacy and confidence with end-of-life care. Nurses who had been in practice for no more than a year but had not been exposed to an end-of-life simulation intervention were also surveyed. The Palliative Care Evaluation Tool Kit was adapted and used for this project. The 2 groups of nurses were compared in terms of self-efficacy and confidence levels regarding end-of-life care. An end-of-life simulation intervention was successful in improving self-efficacy and confidence levels among newly graduated nurses, in regard to views about end of life and death and dying compared with the nurses who did not receive the end-of-life simulation intervention. The results of this study have implications for both schools of nursing and hospital training programs.

Abstract
Background With advances in medicine and technology, intensive care units (ICUs) have the capacity to treat patients who would have previously not been expected to survive and would therefore not have been managed in ICUs. When an individual is not expected to survive, doctors and nurses face the modern ethical dilemma of death associated with withdrawal of life-supporting strategies. The aim of this study was to identify difficulties perceived by ICU nurses providing end-of-life care (EOLC) in Poland. Methods The qualitative study was designed to investigate the difficulties, and the related barriers, to EOLC provided in ICUs in Poland. We conducted individual telephone interviews with ICU nurses from across Poland. Results The main issues raised during the interviews included (1) barriers attributable to the hospital, (2) barriers related to the patient's family, and (3) barriers related to the ICU personnel providing direct EOLC. The interviewed nurses considered the lack of support from managers to be the main barrier. We found that ICU nurses in Poland dealt with end-of-life aspects that were emotionally and psychologically taxing. In addition, they lacked specialized training in this area, especially with regard to family care and care provision. Conclusions A pressing need exists to improve facilities and make equipment ensuring a desirable standard of care more available. Specialized palliative care training programs should be incorporated into compulsory nursing curricula for ICU nurses.
