Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exhibit poorer performance in cognition and dual-task paradigm, while the related cortical thickness and surface area alterations remains unclear. METHODS Thirty participants with MCI and thirty healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive assessments and dual-task Timed Up and Go test (DT-TUG) were performed to assess cerebral cortical thickness and surface area, cognitive functions, and dual-task cost (DTC) of the execution time in TUG. Spearman correlations were conducted to assess the relationships between the cognitive, TUG performance with the cortical morphological measures. RESULTS MCI participants performed worse in the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), WAIS Digit Span, TMT and the modified Posner peripheral cuing task. Their execution time on the DT-TUG was also prolonged. WAIS Digit Span Backwards was correlated with DT-TUG in HC group. A significant between-group difference was observed in the surface area of the left SPC. The cortical thickness of this brain region was positively correlated with the total scores and attention subdomain of MoCA in HC group. The cortical thickness and the surface area were correlated with the time of DT-TUG in HC group only. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with MCI demonstrated declines in both cognitive function and dual-task walking performance. This study provides further evidence of surface-based structural differences in the left SPC in individuals with and without MCI, and supports the role of the left SPC in cognition and dual-task walking.

Abstract
It is striking that visual attention, the process by which attentional resources are allocated in the visual field so as to locally enhance visual perception, is a pervasive component of models of eye movements in reading, but is seldom considered in models of isolated word recognition. We describe BRAID, a new Bayesian word-Recognition model with Attention, Interference and Dynamics. As most of its predecessors, BRAID incorporates three sensory, perceptual, and orthographic knowledge layers together with a lexical membership submodel. Its originality resides in also including three mechanisms that modulate letter identification within strings: an acuity gradient, lateral interference, and visual attention. We calibrated the model such that its temporal scale was consistent with behavioral data, and then explored the model's capacity to generalize to other, independent effects. We evaluated the model's capacity to account for the word length effect in lexical decision, for the optimal viewing position effect, and for the interaction of crowding and frequency effects in word recognition. We further examined how these effects were modulated by variations in the visual attention distribution. We show that visual attention modulates all three effects and that a narrow distribution of visual attention results in performance patterns that mimic those reported in impaired readers. Overall, the BRAID model could be conceived as a core building block, towards the development of integrated models of reading aloud and eye movement control, or of visual recognition of impaired readers, or any context in which visual attention does matter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Visuo-attentional dyslexia has been associated with impaired simultaneous visual processing of multiple items made of separable features (i.e. symbols). We designed a visual search screening test, consisting to find the (unique) black circle among circles of various colours versus among circles combined with a bar of various length and location. We evaluated its reliability and its validity to detect visuo-attentional deficit prone to affect reading. RESULTS OF STUDY 1: Assessment of 2015 children between 3 and 11 years old established that the screening test was feasible from kindergarten, and that our index contrasting visual search performance for symbols relative to colours (the Temporal Gap) decreased with age. Satisfactory test-retest reliability of the standardised index (independent from age) was found on a sample of 69 individuals. RESULTS OF STUDY 2: Reading speed and inaccuracy assessed for 769 4th and 5th grades children were significantly correlated to the Temporal Gap. A Temporal Gap above 75th centile predicted reading efficiency deficit above 95th percentile with 63 % sensitivity and 71 % specificity. PERSPECTIVES Our screening test can be used in clinic to detect whether a child with developmental dyslexia presents visuo-attentional fragility prone to contribute to the reading difficulties. Its validity as early predictor of a risk to develop visuo-attentional dyslexia needs further investigation.

Abstract
Diagnosis of dyslexia often occurs in late schooling years, leading to academic and psychological challenges. Furthermore, diagnosis is time-consuming, costly, and reliant on arbitrary cutoffs. On the other hand, automated algorithms hold great potential in medical and psychological diagnostics. The aim of the present study was to develop a machine learning tool for the detection of dyslexia in children based on the intrinsic connectivity patterns of different brain networks underlying perception and attention. Here, 117 children (8-12 years old; 58 females; 52 typical readers; TR and 65 children with dyslexia) completed cognitive and reading assessments and underwent 10 min of resting-state fMRI. Functional connectivity coefficients between 264 brain regions were used as features for machine learning. Different supervised algorithms were employed for classification of children with and without dyslexia. A classifier trained on dorsal attention network features exhibited the highest performance (accuracy .79, sensitivity .92, specificity .64). Auditory, visual, and fronto-parietal network-based classification showed intermediate accuracy levels (70-75%). These results highlight significant neurobiological differences in brain networks associated with visual attention between TR and children with dyslexia. Distinct neural integration patterns can differentiate dyslexia from typical development, which may be utilized in the future as a biomarker for the presence and/or severity of dyslexia.

Abstract
In the absence of any complaints in early childhood, preterm children remain more at risk of encountering academic difficulties, but their clinical picture remains not well characterized. We screened visuospatial perception in 70 children born preterm consulting for scholar complaints. Developmental Coordination Disorder (with or without comorbidities) was associated with high prevalence (27%) of impaired perception of spatial relationship. Prematurely born children who obtained no diagnosis of Neuro-Developmental Disorder exhibited a high prevalence (31%) of impaired perception of object magnitude. Regression revealed that low gestational age and fetal growth restriction significantly predicted the magnitude but not the spatial relationship perception.

Abstract
Numerous prospective biomarkers are being studied for their ability to diagnose various stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). High-density electroencephalogram (EEG) methods show promise as an accurate, economical, non-invasive approach to measuring the electrical potentials of brains associated with AD. Event-related potentials (ERPs) may serve as clinically useful biomarkers of AD. Through analysis of secondary data, the present study examined the performance and distribution of N4/P6 ERPs across the frontoparietal network (FPN) using EEG topographic mapping. ERP measures and memory as a function of reaction time (RT) were compared between a group of (n = 63) mild untreated AD patients and a control group of (n = 73) healthy age-matched adults. Based on the literature presented, it was expected that healthy controls would outperform patients in peak amplitude and mean component latency across three parameters of memory when measured at optimal N4 (frontal) and P6 (parietal) locations. It was also predicted that the control group would exhibit neural cohesion through FPN integration during cross-modal tasks, thus demonstrating healthy cognitive functioning consistent with older healthy adults. By targeting select frontal and parietal EEG reference channels based on N4/P6 component time windows and positivity, our findings demonstrated statistically significant group variations between controls and patients in N4/P6 peak amplitudes and latencies during cross-modal testing. Our results also support that the N4 ERP might be stronger than its P6 counterpart as a possible candidate biomarker. We conclude through topographic mapping that FPN integration occurs in healthy controls but is absent in AD patients during cross-modal memory tasks.

Abstract
Child maltreatment can adversely affect brain development, leading to vulnerabilities in brain structure and function and various psychiatric disorders. Among the various types of child maltreatment, neglect has the highest incidence rate (76.0%); however, data on its sole adverse influence on the brain remain limited. This case-control brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study identified the changes in gray matter structure and function that distinguish neglected children with no other type of maltreatment (Neglect group, n = 23) from typically developing children (TD group, n = 140), and investigated the association between these structural and functional differences and specific psychosocial phenotypes observed in neglected children. Our results showed that the Neglect group had a larger right and left anterior cingulate cortex (R/L.ACC) and smaller left angular gyrus (L.AG) gray matter volume. The larger R/L.ACC was associated with hyperactivity and inattention. Resting-state functional analysis showed increased functional connectivity (FC) between the left supramarginal gyrus (L.SMG) in the salience network (SN) and the right middle frontal gyrus (R.MFG) simultaneously with a decrease in FC with the L.ACC for the same seed. The increased FC for the R.MFG was associated with difficulty in peer problems and depressive symptoms; a mediating effect was evident for depressive symptoms. These results suggest that the structural atypicality of the R/L.ACC indirectly contributes to the disturbed FCs within the SN, thereby exacerbating depressive symptoms in neglected children. In conclusion, exposure to neglect in childhood may lead to maladaptive brain development, particularly neural changes associated with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
The left temporo-parietal cortex (TPC) is crucial for phonological decoding, i.e., for learning and retaining sound-letter mappings, and appears hypoactive in dyslexia. Here, we tested the causal contribution of this area for reading in typical readers with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and explored the reading network's response with fMRI. By investigating the underlying neural correlates of stimulation-induced modulations of the reading network, we can help improve targeted interventions for individuals with dyslexia. 28 typical adult readers overtly read simple and complex words and pseudowords during fMRI after effective and sham TMS over the left TPC. To explore differences in functional activation and effective connectivity within the reading network, we performed univariate and multivariate analyses, as well as dynamic causal modeling. While TMS-induced effects on reading performance and brain activation showed large individual variability, multivariate analyses revealed a shift in activation in the left inferior frontal cortex for pseudoword reading after effective TMS. Furthermore, TMS increased effective connectivity from the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex to the left TPC. In the absence of effects on reading performance, the observed changes in task-related activity and the increase in functional coupling between the two core reading nodes suggest successful short-term compensatory reorganization in the reading network following TMS-induced disruption. This study is the first to explore neurophysiological changes induced by TMS to a core reading node in typical readers while performing an overt reading task. We provide evidence for remote stimulation effects and emphasize the relevance of functional interactions in the reading network.

Abstract
Time pressure affects multiple cognitive processes but how it affects attention capture remains unclear. Two experiments were carried out in the present study to assess whether time pressure prevents attention from capturing by salient distractors and explore the underlying neural mechanisms using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The results of behavioral tests showed that the singleton effect decreased (Experiment 2) or even disappeared (Experiment 1) when the subject was under time pressure. Neuroimaging data showed that under time pressure, a salient distractor elicited greater activation in the left middle frontal gyrus/inferior frontal gyrus and bilateral superior parietal lobule, brain areas that are thought to be involved in cognitive inhibition and control of spatial attentional shifts. These findings suggest that the reduction or disappearance of the singleton effect under time pressure results from enhanced inhibition of and/or accelerated disengagement from salient distractors.

Abstract
What are the causes of dyslexia? Decades of research reflect a determined search for a single cause where a common assumption is that dyslexia is a consequence of problems with converting phonological information into lexical codes. But reading is a highly complex activity requiring many well-functioning mechanisms, and several different visual problems have been documented in dyslexic readers. We critically review evidence from various sources for the role of visual factors in dyslexia, from magnocellular dysfunction through accounts based on abnormal eye movements and attentional processing, to recent proposals that problems with high-level vision contribute to dyslexia. We believe that the role of visual problems in dyslexia has been underestimated in the literature, to the detriment of the understanding and treatment of the disorder. We propose that rather than focusing on a single core cause, the role of visual factors in dyslexia fits well with risk and resilience models that assume that several variables interact throughout prenatal and postnatal development to either promote or hinder efficient reading.

Abstract
Some dyslexics cannot process multiple letters simultaneously. It has been argued that this reduced visuo-attentional (VA) letter span could result from poor reading ability and experience. Here, moving away from reading context, we showed that dyslexic group exhibited slower visual search than normal readers group for "symbols", defined as graphic stimuli made up of separable visual features, but not for filled objects. Slowness in symbol visual search was explained by reduced VA field and atypical ocular behaviour when processing those letter-like stimuli and was associated with reduced VA letter span and impaired elementary visuo-spatial perception. Such a basic visual search deficit can hardly be attributed to poor reading ability and experience. Moreover, because it is specific to letter-like stimuli (i.e., "symbols"), it can specifically hinder reading acquisition. Symbol visual search can easily be tested in the pre-reading phase, opening up prospects for early risk detection and prevention of VA dyslexia.

Abstract
The visual attention span (VAS) deficit theory of developmental dyslexia (DD) indicates that impaired VAS may cause reading disabilities. However, whether people with dyslexia have VAS deficit is still controversial. The current review evaluates the literature regarding the relationship between VAS and poor reading, as it also examines the possible moderators in measuring the VAS capacity of individuals with dyslexia. A total of 25 papers, with participants of 859 readers with dyslexia and 1048 typically developing readers were included in the meta-analysis. The sample sizes, means and standard deviations (SDs) of the scores in VAS tasks were extracted separately from the two groups, which were used to calculate the effect sizes of group differences in SDs and means by the robust variance estimation model. Results showed higher SDs and lower averages of the VAS test scores for readers with dyslexia than those for typically developing readers, revealing high individual variability and remarkable deficits in VAS of DD. Further subgroup analyses showed that the characteristics of VAS tasks, background languages, and participants modulated the group differences in VAS capacities. Particularly, the partial report task with symbols of relatively high visual complexity and key pressing may be the optimal measurement of VAS skills. A greater VAS deficit in DD was observed in more opaque languages, with a trend of developmental increase in attention deficit, especially at the primary school level. Moreover, this VAS deficit seemed to be independent of the phonological deficit of dyslexia. These findings to some extent supported the VAS deficit theory of DD and (partially) explained the controversial relationship between VAS impairment and reading disabilities.

Abstract
Children with reading disorders present with inaccurate and/or delayed printed word identification. Regarding visual-attentional processing, printed words are letter strings, and each letter is a symbol made of separable features. Simultaneous processing of separable features has been evidenced to be specifically impaired in visual search tasks using symbols in poor readers as well as in a patient with superior parietal lobules (SPL) lesion. Additionally, activation in the SPL has been shown to be abnormally low in dyslexic readers displaying a reduced span of letter strings processing. This deficit has been assumed to impair visual-attentional sampling of printed words. An experiment conducted with 21 dyslexic children tested the hypothesis that a training program based on visual symbol search may stimulate the SPL, leading to a potential benefit transferred to reading performance. We designed the VisioCogLetters serious game and introduced it at random for one month (10 min every day) between four monthly reading sessions. No training was provided between the other (control) reading sessions. Reading accuracy increased without any speed-accuracy trade-off specifically in the session after training. Moreover, the percentage of improvement correlated with the individual time spent at home on training. These results show that improved visual search skills on symbols can translate into enhanced reading performance, and pave a new avenue for future rehabilitation tools.

Abstract
Recent research on emotion recognition suggests that deep network-based adversarial learning has an ability to solve the cross-subject problem of emotion recognition. This study constructed a hearing-impaired electroencephalography (EEG) emotion dataset containing three emotions (positive, neutral, and negative) in 15 subjects. The emotional domain adversarial neural network (EDANN) was carried out to identify hearing-impaired subjects' emotions by learning hidden emotion information between the labeled data and the data with no-label. For the input data, we propose a spatial filter matrix to reduce the overfitting of the training data. A feature extraction network 3DLSTM-ConvNET was used to extract comprehensive emotional information from the time, frequency, and spatial dimensions. Moreover, emotion local domain discriminator and emotion film group local domain discriminator were added to reduce the distribution distance between the same kinds of emotions and different film groups, respectively. According to the experimental results, the average accuracy of subject-dependent is 0.984 (STD: 0.011), and that of subject-independent is 0.679 (STD: 0.140). In addition, by analyzing the discrimination characteristics, we found that the brain regions with emotional recognition in the hearing-impaired are distributed in the wider areas of the parietal and occipital lobes, which may be caused by visual processing.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the role of connectivity disruptions in two fiber pathways, the uncinate fasciculus (UF) and the frontal aslant tract (FAT), in developmental dyslexia and determine the relationship between the connectivity of these pathways and behavioral performance in children with dyslexia. A total of 26 French children with dyslexia and 31 age-matched control children were included. Spherical deconvolution tractography was used to reconstruct the two fiber pathways. Hindrance-modulated oriented anisotropy (HMOA) was used to measure the connectivity of each fiber pathway in both hemispheres. Only boys with dyslexia showed reduced HMOA in the UF compared to control boys. Furthermore, HMOA of the UF correlated with individual differences in the visual attention span in participants with dyslexia. All significant results found in HMOA of the UF were verified in fractional anisotropy (FA) of the UF using standard diffusion imaging model. This study suggests a differential sex effect on the connectivity disruption in the UF in developmental dyslexia. It also indicates that the UF may play an essential role in the visual attention span deficit in developmental dyslexia.

Abstract
IntroductionVisual attention span is a measure of multielement parallel processing. Individuals with higher visual attention span are expected to allocate more attention to letters within strings, which boosts letter identification and translates into more efficient reading. Given the high visual complexity of the Arabic writing system, we expected visual attention span to be an important predictor of reading in the Arabic language.MethodsNative Arabic readers from Grade 4 and Grade 5 were recruited in Iraqi schools. We assessed the contribution of visual attention span to their reading fluency performance in tasks of fully vowelized word and pseudo-word reading, non-vowelized text reading, and written text comprehension. Their phonological awareness, IQ, and single letter processing speed were further evaluated.ResultsResults showed that visual attention span was a significant unique predictor of all the reading measures. Visual attention span and phonological awareness accounted for a similar amount of variance in word and pseudo-word reading fluency. Visual attention span was a far higher predictor than phonological awareness for text reading fluency and the sole predictor of text comprehension.DiscussionThe role of visual attention span to reading is discussed by reference to current word recognition models. Higher involvement of visual attention is expected in vowelized script to compensate for increased crowding in the presence of diacritics. Visual attention would thus contribute to sub-lexical orthographic parsing and favor orthography-to-phonology mapping, in particular for the pseudo-words that do not benefit from efficient lexical feedback. In non-vowelized script, higher visual attention would enhance the accurate and fast identification of root letters within words, thus resulting in faster word recognition.

Abstract
Developmental dyslexia is a disorder characterized by a sustainable learning deficit in reading. Based on ERP-driven approaches focusing on the visual word form area, electrophysiological studies have pointed a lack of visual expertise for written word recognition in dyslexic readers by contrasting the left-lateralized N170 amplitudes elicited by alphabetic versus non-alphabetic stimuli. Here, we investigated in 22 dyslexic participants and 22 age-matched control subjects how two behavioural abilities potentially affected in dyslexic readers (phonological and visual attention skills) contributed to the N170 expertise during a word detection task. Consistent with literature, dyslexic participants exhibited poorer performance in these both abilities as compared to healthy subjects. At the brain level, we observed (1) an unexpected preservation of the N170 expertise in the dyslexic group suggesting a possible compensatory mechanism and (2) a modulation of this expertise only by phonological skills, providing evidence for the phonological mapping deficit hypothesis.

Abstract
The visual attention span (VAS) deficit hypothesis in developmental dyslexia posits that a subset of dyslexic individuals shows a multielement parallel processing deficit due to reduced visual attention capacity. However, the attention-based interpretation of poor performance on VAS tasks is hotly debated. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify this issue through a critical review of relevant behavioural and neurobiological findings. We first examine the plausibility of alternative verbal interpretations of VAS performance, evaluating whether performance on VAS tasks might reflect verbal short-term memory, verbal coding or visual-to-verbal mapping skills. We then focus on the visual dimensions of VAS tasks to question whether VAS primarily reflects visuo-attentional rather than more basic visual skills. Scrutiny of the available behavioural and neurobiological findings not only points to a deficit of visual attention in dyslexic individuals with impaired VAS but further suggests a selective endogenous attentional system deficit that relates to atypical functioning of the brain dorsal attentional network. The overview clarifies the debate on what is being measured through VAS tasks and provides insights on how to interpret the VAS deficit in developmental dyslexia.

It has been suggested that developmental dyslexia may have two dissociable causes-a phonological deficit and a visual attention span (VAS) deficit. Yet, neural evidence for such a dissociation is still lacking. This study adopted a data-driven approach to white matter network analysis to explore hubs and hub-related networks corresponding to VAS and phonological accuracy in a group of French dyslexic children aged from 9 to 14 years. A double dissociation in brain-behavior relations was observed. Structural connectivity of the occipital-parietal network surrounding the left superior occipital gyrus hub accounted for individual differences in dyslexic children's VAS, but not in phonological processing accuracy. In contrast, structural connectivity of two networks: the temporal-parietal-occipital network surrounding the left middle temporal gyrus hub and the frontal network surrounding the left medial orbital superior frontal gyrus hub, accounted for individual differences in dyslexic children's phonological processing accuracy, but not in VAS. Our findings provide evidence in favor of distinct neural circuits corresponding to VAS and phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia. The study points to connectivity-constrained white matter subnetwork dysfunction as a key principle for understanding individual differences of cognitive deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Abstract
Research has shown improved reading following visual magnocellular training in individuals with dyslexia. Many studies have demonstrated how the magnocellular pathway controls visual spatial attention. Therefore, we have investigated the relationship between magnocellular pathway and visual spatial attention deficits in dyslexia in order to better understand how magnocellular-based interventions may help children to learn to read. Magnocellular function, visual spatial attention, and reading abilities of thirty elementary school students with dyslexia, aged between 8 and 10, were measured. The experimental group received magnocellular-based visual motion training for 12 sessions, while the control group received neutral sessions. All tests were repeated at the end of the training and after 1 month. The magnocellular functioning, visual spatial attention, and reading abilities of the experimental group improved significantly compared to the controls. Additionally, improvement in reaction time of invalid conditions predicted improvements in saccadic eye movements. We conclude that visual magnocellular training improved saccadic eye movement control, visual spatial orientation, and reading ability.

Abstract
Visual attention span (VAS), which refers to the window size of multielement parallel processing in a short time, plays an important role in higher‐level cognition (e.g., reading) as required by encoding large amounts of information input. However, it is still a matter of debate about the underlying neural mechanism of VAS. In the present study, a modified visual 1‐back task was designed by using nonverbal stimuli and nonverbal responses, in which possible influences of target presence and position were considered to identify more pure VAS processing. A task‐driven functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment was then performed, and 30 healthy adults participated in this study. Results of confirmatory and exploratory analyses consistently revealed that both dorsal attention network (DAN) and ventral attention network (VAN) were significantly activated during this visual simultaneous processing. In particular, more significant activation in the left superior parietal lobule (LSPL), as compared to that in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFGs), suggested a greater involvement of DAN in VAS‐related processing in contrast to VAN. In addition, it was also found that the activation in temporoparietal junctions (TPJs) were suppressed during multielement processing only in the target‐absent condition. The current results suggested the recruitment of LSPL in covert attentional shifts and top‐down control of VAS resources distribution during the rapid visual simultaneous processing, as well as the involvement of bilateral IFGs (especially RIFG) in both VAS processing and inhibitory control. The present findings might bring some enlightenments for diagnosis of the atypicality of attentional disorders and reading difficulties.

Abstract
The probability of recognizing a word depends on the position of fixation during processing. In typical readers, the resulting word-recognition curves are asymmetrical, showing a left-of-centre optimal viewing position (OVP). First, we report behavioural results from dyslexic participants who show atypical word-recognition curves characterized by the OVP being right of centre with recognition probability being higher on the rightmost than on the leftmost letters. Second, we used BRAID, a Bayesian model of word recognition that implements gaze position, an acuity gradient, lateral interference and a visual attention component, to examine how variations in the deployment of visual attention would affect the OVP curves. We show that the atypical dyslexic curves are well simulated assuming a narrow distribution of visual attention and a shifting of visual attention towards the left visual field. These behavioural and modelling findings are discussed in light of current theories of visual attention deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Abstract
Attentional resource and distribution are specifically impaired in simultanagnosia, and also in the visuo-attentional form of developmental dyslexia. Both clinical conditions are conceived as a limitation of simultaneous visual processing after superior parietal lobule (SPL) dysfunction (review in Valdois et al., 2019). However, a reduced space-based attentional window (i.e. a limited visual eccentricity at which the target object can be identified, Khan et al. 2016) has been demonstrated in simultanagnosia versus a reduced object-based span (i.e. a limited number of objects processed at each fixation, Bosse et al., 2007) in developmental dyslexia. In healthy individuals, the cost in reaction times per item in serial search tasks suggests that a group of objects is processed simultaneously at a time, but this group is also undefined and depends on the visual complexity of the task. Healthy individuals and a patient with simultanagnosia performed serial search tasks involving either symbols (made of separable features) or objects made of non-separable features, and with distractors that were either all identical or all dissimilar. We used a moving window paradigm to determine whether the task was performed with a "working space" versus a "working span" limitation in control group and in patient with bilateral SPL damage. We found that healthy individuals performed search in a color task comprising non-separable feature objects and dissimilar distractors with a limited space-based attentional window; this attentional window, as well as the mean saccade amplitude used to displace it across the visual display, were independent of set size, thus inconsistent with an object-based attentional span. In the symbol task comprising a feature-absent search in which all feature-present distractors were dissimilar, we observed that mean saccade amplitude decreased with set size and that search performance could not be mimicked by a moving window of a single diameter; instead participants seemed to process a fixed number of symbols at a time (object-based span). Following bilateral SPL lesions, patient IG demonstrated a similar space-based search process in the color search task with a normal attentional window. In contrast, her cost-per-item in the symbol task increased dramatically, demonstrating a clear deficit of simultaneous object perception. These results confirmed the specific contribution of the SPL to the visual processing of multiple objects made of separable features (like letters), and more dramatically when they are all different, which explains the specific difficulty for a reading beginner in case of SPL dysfunction.

Abstract
Anti-saccades are eye movements that require inhibition to stop the automatic saccade to the visual target and to perform instead a saccade in the opposite direction. The inhibitory processes underlying anti-saccades have been primarily associated with frontal cortex areas for their role in executive control. Impaired performance in anti-saccades has also been associated with the parietal cortex, but its role in inhibitory processes remains unclear. Here, we tested the assumption that the dorsal parietal cortex contributes to spatial inhibition processes of contralateral visual target. We measured anti-saccade performance in 2 unilateral optic ataxia patients and 15 age-matched controls. Participants performed 90 degree (across and within visual fields) and 180 degree inversion anti-saccades, as well as pro-saccades. The main result was that our patients took longer to inhibit visually guided saccades when the visual target was presented in the ataxic hemifield and the task required a saccade across hemifields. This was observed through anti-saccades latencies and error rates. These deficits show the crucial role of the dorsal posterior parietal cortex in spatial inhibition of contralateral visual target representations to plan an accurate anti-saccade toward the ipsilesional side.

Abstract
Individuals with reading fluency difficulty (RFD) show an impairment in the simultaneous processing of multiple elements, which could be reflected in their visual attention span (VAS) capacity. However, the relationship between VAS impairment and RFD is still controversial. A series of processes underlie VAS, such as the early stage of visual attentional processing and the late stage of allocating and maintaining attentional resources. Therefore, the present study explored the relationships between VAS skills and RFD through the event-related potential (ERP) technique to disentangle the contributing cognitive processes regarding VAS from a temporal perspective. Eighteen Chinese adults with poor reading fluency and 18 age-matched normal readers participated. Their VAS skills were measured by a visual one-back task with symbols as nonverbal stimuli and key pressing as nonverbal responses, while relevant electrophysiological signals were recorded. The results showed that lower d' values and abnormal electrophysiological activities (especially weak amplitudes in the N1 and P3 components) in the VAS task were observed for the nonfluent readers compared with the controls. These findings suggested that the low VAS capacity in adults with poor reading fluency could be reflected by problems both in directing selective attention to visually discriminate stimuli within a multielement string at the early processing stage and in allocating attention to further encode targets at the late processing stage. Alternative explanations were further discussed. The current results provide theoretical explanations of the VAS-RFD relationship from a temporal perspective and provide insights for future remediation of reading fluency difficulty.

Abstract
This chapter starts by reviewing the various interpretations of Bálint syndrome over time. We then develop a novel integrative view in which we propose that the various symptoms, historically reported and labeled by various authors, result from a core mislocalization deficit. This idea is in accordance with our previous proposal that the core deficit of Bálint syndrome is attentional (Pisella et al., 2009, 2013, 2017) since covert attention improves spatial resolution in visual periphery (Yeshurun and Carrasco, 1998); a deficit of covert attention would thus increase spatial uncertainty and thereby impair both visual object identification and visuomotor accuracy. In peripheral vision, we perceive the intrinsic characteristics of the perceptual elements surrounding us, but not their precise localization (Rosenholtz et al., 2012a,b), such that without covert attention we cannot organize them to their respective and recognizable objects; this explains why perceptual symptoms (simultanagnosia, neglect) could result from visual mislocalization. The visuomotor symptoms (optic ataxia) can be accounted for by both visual and proprioceptive mislocalizations in an oculocentric reference frame, leading to field and hand effects, respectively. This new pathophysiological account is presented along with a model of posterior parietal cortex organization in which the superior part is devoted to covert attention, while the right inferior part is involved in visual remapping. When the right inferior parietal cortex is damaged, additional representational mislocalizations across saccades worsen the clinical picture of peripheral mislocalizations due to an impairment of covert attention.

Abstract
Simultanagnosia is an impairment in processing multiple visual elements simultaneously consecutive to bilateral posterior parietal damage, and neuroimaging data have specifically implicated the superior parietal lobule (SPL) in multiple element processing. We previously reported that a patient with focal and bilateral lesions of the SPL performed slower than controls in visual search but only for stimuli consisting of separable lines. Here, we further explored this patient's visual processing of plain object (colored disk) versus object consisting of separable lines (letter), presented in isolation (single object) versus in triplets. Identification of objects was normal in isolation but dropped to chance level when surrounded by distracters, irrespective of eccentricity and spacing. We speculate that this poor performance reflects a deficit in processing objects' relative locations within the triplet (for colored disks), aggravated by a deficit in processing the relative location of each separable line (for letters). Confirming this, performance improved when the patient just had to detect the presence of a specific colored disk within the triplets (visual search instruction), while the inability to identify the middle letter was alleviated when the distracters were identical letters that could be grouped, thereby reducing the number of ways individual lines could be bound.

Abstract
The goal was to identify the domain-general cognitive abilities and academic attitudes that are common and unique to reading and mathematics learning difficulties that in turn will have implications for intervention development. Across seventh and eighth grade, 315 (155 boys) adolescents (M age = 12.75 years) were administered intelligence, verbal short-term and working memory, and visuospatial memory, attention, and ability measures, along with measures of English and mathematics attitudes and mathematics anxiety. Teachers reported on students' in-class attentive behavior. A combination of Bayesian and multi-level models revealed that intelligence and in-class attentive behavior were common predictors of reading accuracy, reading fluency, and mathematics achievement. Verbal short-term memory was more critical for reading accuracy and fluency, whereas spatial ability and mathematics self-efficacy were more critical for mathematics achievement. The combination of intelligence and in-class attentive behavior discriminated typically achieving students from students with comorbid (D = 2.44) or mathematics (D = 1.59) learning difficulties, whereas intelligence, visuospatial attention, and verbal short-term memory discriminated typically achieving students from students with reading disability (D = 1.08). The combination of in-class attentive behavior, verbal short-term memory, and mathematics self-efficacy discriminated students with mathematics difficulties from their peers with reading difficulties (D = 1.16). Given the consistent importance of in-class attentive behavior, we conducted post hoc follow-up analyses. The results suggested that students with poor in-class attentive behavior were disengaging from academic learning which in turn contributed to their risk of learning difficulties.

Abstract
The dorsal attention network (DAN) is involved in the process that causes wide-ranging cognitive damage resulted in right temporal lobe epilepsy (rTLE). Nevertheless, few studies have evaluated the relationship between DAN and rTLE. There has been little research on alterations in the network homogeneity (NH) of the DAN in rTLE. The aim of the present study was to investigate NH changes in DAN in patients with rTLE. We included 85 patients with rTLE and 69 healthy controls in this study, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were acquired. The NH method was used for data analysis. All subjects took the attention network test (ANT). Network homogeneity in the right superior parietal lobule (SPL) and right precuneus (PCU) was significantly higher in patients with rTLE than in healthy controls. The reaction time (RT) was significantly longer in patients with rTLE than in controls. Notably, we observed no significant relationship between the clinical variables and the abnormal NH. These results indicated that abnormal alterations in DAN existed in patients with rTLE and highlighted the crucial role of DAN in the pathophysiology of cognitive damage in rTLE. Our findings suggested that the executive function (EF) significantly weakened in patients with rTLE.

Abstract
Previous studies have usually explored the possible mechanisms underlying reading fluency separately from either linguistic (e.g., phonological awareness, PA) or basic cognitive (e.g., visual attention span, VAS) levels, but relatively little is known about the systematic relationship between multiple levels of cognitive factors and reading fluency development. Thus, the present study, from a combinative point of view, investigated the relationship between VAS at a basic cognitive level and PA at a high linguistic level and explored their predictive power for reading fluency development a year later through a longitudinal method. PA and VAS were measured in sixty-five Chinese children who had just entered Grade 1 of primary school (Time 1); PA tests included syllabic and phonemic aspects, and VAS was reflected by performance in the visual 1-back task with nonverbal stimuli and no verbal response. Reading fluency was tested at the single-character level at the beginning of Grade 2 (Time 2). The results showed that phoneme awareness could not predict variation in reading fluency, while both syllable awareness and VAS showed significant predictive powers for single-character reading fluency. Additionally, further analysis revealed that the relationship between VAS and later single-character reading fluency was partially mediated by syllable awareness. These findings indicated Chinese language characteristics in the relationship among VAS, PA, and reading fluency. The possible roles of multiple levels of cognitive skills in fluent reading have been further discussed and have implications for the early diagnosis and remediation of reading dysfluency.

Abstract
Categorical perception of phonemes and visual attention span are cognitive processes that contribute independently to poor reading skills in developmental dyslexia. We here explored whether training programs specifically targeting one or the other process do improve reading performance in dyslexic children. The dyslexic participants were trained using either the RapDys© program designed to improve phonemic perception or the MAEVA© program targeting visual attention span. Each participant was provided the two programs successively for intensive training. Results show specific effects of RapDys© on phonemic discrimination and pseudo-word reading. MAEVA© specifically improved visual attention span and irregular word reading. Phonemic awareness and regular word reading improved after application of both training programs, suggesting similar positive effects of both methods although effects of concomitant phonic training cannot be ruled out (as there was no control group). The overall findings suggest that both categorical perception and visual attention span remediation contribute to reading.
