Bright and ultra-fast scintillation from a semiconductor?

Experimental study of the fast scintillating behavior of ZnO:Ga crystal under MeV electron beam

An experimental study on the scintillating behavior of ZnO:Ga crystals was conducted using a 7-MeV electron accelerator. The ZnO:Ga crystals were grown using both hydrothermal and chemical vapor transport methods. One of the ZnO:Ga crystals grown via the hydrothermal method exhibited a 1.5-ns afterglow time when excited by an MeV electron beam. The ultra-short scintillation was captured using both an ultrafast streak camera and a framed camera. The experimental results also confirm its potential for diagnosing electron beam trains with a repetition rate of hundreds of MHz.

Design rules for time of flight Positron Emission Tomography (ToF-PET) heterostructure radiation detectors

Despite the clinical acceptance of ToF-PET, there is still a gap between the technology's performance and the end-user's needs. Core to bridging this gap is the ability to develop radiation detectors combining a short attenuation length and a sub-nanosecond time response. Currently, the detector of choice, Lu₂SiO₅:Ce³⁺ single crystal, is not selected for its ability to answer the performance needs, but as a trade-off between requirements and availability. To bypass the current performance limitations, in particular restricted time response, the concept of the heterostructured detector has been proposed. The concept aims at splitting the scintillation mechanisms across two materials, one acting primarily as an absorber and one as an ultra-fast emitter. If the concept has attracted the interest of the medical and material communities, little has been shown in terms of the benefits/limitations of the approach. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we present a survey of heterostructure performance versus detector design. The data allow for a clear understanding of the design/performance relationship. This, in turn, enables the establishment of design rules toward the development and optimization of heterostructured detectors that could supersede the current detector technology in the medical imaging field but also across multiple sectors (e.g. high-energy physics, security).

Halide perovskites scintillators: unique promise and current limitations

The widespread use of X- and gamma-rays in a range of sectors including healthcare, security and industrial screening is underpinned by the efficient detection of the ionising radiation. Such detector applications are dominated by indirect detectors in which a scintillating material is combined with a photodetector. Halide perovskites have recently emerged as an interesting class of semiconductors, showing enormous promise in optoelectronic applications including solar cells, light-emitting diodes and photodetectors. Here, we discuss how the same superior semiconducting properties that have catalysed their rapid development in these optoelectronic devices, including high photon attenuation and fast and efficient emission properties, also make them promising scintillator materials. By outlining the key mechanisms of their operation as scintillators, we show why reports of remarkable performance have already emerged, and describe how further learning from other optoelectronic devices will propel forward their applications as scintillators. Finally, we outline where these materials can make the greatest impact in detector applications by maximally exploiting their unique properties, leading to dramatic improvements in existing detection systems or introducing entirely new functionality.

Air-Stable Bulk Halide Single-Crystal Scintillator Cs3Cu2I5 by Melt Growth: Intrinsic and Tl Doped with High Light Yield

Ternary metal halides with large exciton binding energy have recently gained considerable attention in the optoelectronic field due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield and large Stokes shift. Here, efficient scintillators are designed based on these advantageous properties. For the first time, bulk Cs₃Cu₂I₅ is grown using a melt method other than the intensively reported solution growth, and behaved as an intrinsic scintillator, emitting bright blue (∼450 nm) light under X-ray and γ-ray irradiation. Successful Tl doping at Cs sites tune the emission band over the entire visible range (400-700 nm) due to the synergetic effects of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and Tl centers. Notably, after doping with 1% Tl⁺, the scintillation light yield of Cs₃Cu₂I₅ increases by nearly three times to 51 000 ± 2000 ph/MeV (Cs-137, 662 keV). Cs₃Cu₂I₅:Tl shows a higher energy resolution of 4.5% at 662 keV than that of NaI:Tl and an excellent nonproportionality (<3%) in the γ-ray energy range of 60-1275 keV. A model of energy relaxation in Cs₃Cu₂I₅:Tl scintillators is proposed and discussed. In particular, it is the first Cu-based halide scintillator that has air stability, good stopping power, and the ability to grow large bulk single crystals for practical application. This work provides a strategy for tuning and broadening the spectral range of STE emitters, and bridges the lead-free halide derivatives with scintillators.

Recent advances, challenges, and opportunities of inorganic nanoscintillators

This review article highlights the exploration of inorganic nanoscintillators for various scientific and technological applications in the fields of radiation detection, bioimaging, and medical theranostics. Various aspects of nanoscintillators pertaining to their fundamental principles, mechanism, structure, applications are briefly discussed. The mechanisms of inorganic nanoscintillators are explained based on the fundamental principles, instrumentation involved, and associated physical and chemical phenomena, etc. Subsequently, the promise of nanoscintillators over the existing single-crystal scintillators and other types of scintillators is presented, enabling their development for multifunctional applications. The processes governing the scintillation mechanisms in nanodomains, such as surface, structure, quantum, and dielectric confinement, are explained to reveal the underlying nanoscale scintillation phenomena. Additionally, suitable examples are provided to explain these processes based on the published data. Furthermore, we attempt to explain the different types of inorganic nanoscintillators in terms of the powder nanoparticles, thin films, nanoceramics, and glasses to ensure that the effect of nanoscience in different nanoscintillator domains can be appreciated. The limitations of nanoscintillators are also highlighted in this review article. The advantages of nanostructured scintillators, including their property-driven applications, are also explained. This review article presents the considerable application potential of nanostructured scintillators with respect to important aspects as well as their physical and application significance in a concise manner.

Bright and fast scintillations of an inorganic halide perovskite CsPbBr3 crystal at cryogenic temperatures

Highly efficient scintillation crystals with short decay times are indispensable for improving the performance of numerous detection and imaging instruments that use- X-rays, gamma-quanta, ionising particles or neutrons. Halide perovskites emerged recently as very promising materials for detection of ionising radiation that motivated further exploration of the materials. In this work, we report on excellent scintillation properties of CsPbBr₃ crystals when cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The temperature dependence of luminescence spectra, decay kinetics and light yield under excitation with X-rays and α-particles was investigated. It is shown that the observed changes of spectral and kinetic characteristics of the crystal with temperature can be consistently explained by radiative decay of free excitons, bound and trapped excitons as well as electron-hole pairs originating from their disintegration. It has been found that the crystal exhibits a fast decay time constant of 1 ns at 7 K. The scintillation light yield of CsPbBr₃ at 7 K is assessed to be 50,000 ± 10,000 ph/MeV at excitation with 12 keV X-rays and 109,000 ± 22,000 ph/MeV at excitation with α-particles of ²⁴¹Am. This finding places CsPbBr₃ in an excellent position for the development of a new generation of cryogenic, efficient scintillation detectors with nanosecond response time, marking a step-change in opportunities for scintillator-based applications.

Megahertz non-contact luminescence decay time cryothermometry by means of ultrafast PbI2 scintillator

Realtime in situ temperature monitoring in difficult experimental conditions or inaccessible environments is critical for many applications. Non-contact luminescence decay time thermometry is often the method of choice for such applications due to a favorable combination of sensitivity, accuracy and robustness. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of an ultrafast PbI2 scintillator for temperature determination, using the time structure of X-ray radiation, produced by a synchrotron. The decay kinetics of the scintillations was measured over the 8-107 K temperature range using monochromatic pulsed X-ray excitation. It is found that lead iodide exhibits a very fast and intense scintillation response due to excitons and donor-acceptor pairs, with the fast decay component varying between 0.08 and 0.5 ns - a feature that can be readily exploited for temperature monitoring. The observed temperature dependence of the decay time is discussed in terms of two possible mechanisms of thermal quenching - transition over activation barrier and phonon-assisted escape. It is concluded that the latter provides a better fit to the experimental results and is consistent with the model of luminescence processes in PbI2. We evaluated the sensitivity and estimated the accuracy of the temperature determination as ca. ±6 K at 107 K, improving to ±1.4 K at 8 K. The results of this study prove the feasibility of temperature monitoring, using ultrafast scintillation of PbI2 excited by X-ray pulses from a synchrotron, thus enabling non-contact in-situ cryothermometry with megahertz sampling rate.

Towards time-of-flight PET with a semiconductor detector

The feasibility of using Cerenkov light, generated by energetic electrons following 511 keV photon interactions in the semiconductor TlBr, to obtain fast timing information for positron emission tomography (PET) was evaluated. Due to its high refractive index, TlBr is a relatively good Cerenkov radiator and with its wide bandgap, has good optical transparency across most of the visible spectrum. Coupling an SiPM photodetector to a slab of TlBr (TlBr-SiPM) yielded a coincidence timing resolution of 620 ps FWHM between the TlBr-SiPM detector and a LFS reference detector. This value improved to 430 ps FWHM by applying a high pulse amplitude cut based on the TlBr-SiPM and reference detector signal amplitudes. These results are the best ever achieved with a semiconductor PET detector and already approach the performance required for time-of-flight. As TlBr has higher stopping power and better energy resolution than the conventional scintillation detectors currently used in PET scanners, a hybrid TlBr-SiPM detector with fast timing capability becomes an interesting option for further development.

LuAG:Pr3+-porphyrin based nanohybrid system for singlet oxygen production: Toward the next generation of PDTX drugs

A highly prospective drug for the X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (PDTX), LuAG:Pr³⁺@SiO₂-PpIX nanocomposite, was successfully prepared by a three step process: photo-induced precipitation of the Lu₃Al₅O₁₂:Pr³⁺ (LuAG:Pr³⁺) core, sol-gel technique for amorphous silica coating, and a biofunctionalization by attaching the protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) molecules. The synthesis procedure provides three-layer nanocomposite with uniform shells covering an intensely luminescent core. Room temperature radioluminescence (RT RL) spectra as well as photoluminescence (RT PL) steady-state and time resolved spectra of the material confirm the non-radiative energy transfer from the core Pr³⁺ ions to the PpIX outer layer. First, excitation of Pr³⁺ ions results in the red luminescence of PpIX. Second, the decay measurements exhibit clear evidence of mentioned non-radiative energy transfer (ET). The singlet oxygen generation in the system was demonstrated by the 3'-(p-aminophenyl) fluorescein (APF) chemical probe sensitive to the singlet oxygen presence. The RT PL spectra of an X-ray irradiated material with the APF probe manifest the formation of singlet oxygen due to which enhanced luminescence around 530 nm is observed. Quenching studies, using NaN₃ as an ¹O₂ inhibitor, also confirm the presence of ¹O₂ in the system and rule out the parasitic reaction with OH radicals. To summarize, presented features of LuAG:Pr³⁺@SiO₂-PpIX nanocomposite indicate its considerable potential for PDTX application.

Monte Carlo simulations of time-of-flight PET with double-ended readout: calibration, coincidence resolving times and statistical lower bounds

This paper demonstrates through Monte Carlo simulations that a practical positron emission tomograph with (1) deep scintillators for efficient detection, (2) double-ended readout for depth-of-interaction information, (3) fixed-level analog triggering, and (4) accurate calibration and timing data corrections can achieve a coincidence resolving time (CRT) that is not far above the statistical lower bound. One Monte Carlo algorithm simulates a calibration procedure that uses data from a positron point source. Annihilation events with an interaction near the entrance surface of one scintillator are selected, and data from the two photodetectors on the other scintillator provide depth-dependent timing corrections. Another Monte Carlo algorithm simulates normal operation using these corrections and determines the CRT. A third Monte Carlo algorithm determines the CRT statistical lower bound by generating a series of random interaction depths, and for each interaction a set of random photoelectron times for each of the two photodetectors. The most likely interaction times are determined by shifting the depth-dependent probability density function to maximize the joint likelihood for all the photoelectron times in each set. Example calculations are tabulated for different numbers of photoelectrons and photodetector time jitters for three 3  ×  3  ×  30 mm³ scintillators: Lu₂SiO₅:Ce,Ca (LSO), LaBr₃:Ce, and a hypothetical ultra-fast scintillator. To isolate the factors that depend on the scintillator length and the ability to estimate the DOI, CRT values are tabulated for perfect scintillator-photodetectors. For LSO with 4000 photoelectrons and single photoelectron time jitter of the photodetector J  =  0.2 ns (FWHM), the CRT value using the statistically weighted average of corrected trigger times is 0.098 ns FWHM and the statistical lower bound is 0.091 ns FWHM. For LaBr₃:Ce with 8000 photoelectrons and J  =  0.2 ns FWHM, the CRT values are 0.070 and 0.063 ns FWHM, respectively. For the ultra-fast scintillator with 1 ns decay time, 4000 photoelectrons, and J  =  0.2 ns FWHM, the CRT values are 0.021 and 0.017 ns FWHM, respectively. The examples also show that calibration and correction for depth-dependent variations in pulse height and in annihilation and optical photon transit times are necessary to achieve these CRT values.
