Abstract
Iodine deficiency can cause thyroid disease, a serious health problem that has been affecting humans since several years. The biofortification of plants with iodine is an effective strategy for regulating iodine content in humans. In addition, radioiodine released into the atmosphere may contaminate terrestrial ecosystem along with dry or wet deposition and its accumulation in plants may cause exposure risks to humans via food chain. Recent progress in understanding the mechanisms related to iodine uptake, elementary speciation, dynamic transportation, nutritional role, and toxicity in plants is reviewed here. First, we introduced the iodine cycle in a marine-atmosphere-land system. The content and speciation of iodine in plants under natural conditions and biofortification backgrounds were also analyzed. We then discussed the mechanisms of iodine uptake and efflux by plants. The promotion or inhibition effects of iodine on plant growth were also investigated. Finally, the participation of radioiodine in plant growth and its safety risks along the food chain were evaluated. Furthermore, future challenges and opportunities for understanding the participation of iodine in plants have been outlined.

Abstract
NMR spectroscopy was used to measure the rates of the first and second substitution reactions between iodoalkane (R = Me, 1-butyl) and DABCO in methanol, acetonitrile and DMSO. Most of the reactions were recorded at three different temperatures, which permitted calculation of the activation parameters from Eyring and Arrhenius plots. Additionally, the reaction rate and heat of reaction for 1-iodobutane + DABCO in acetonitrile and DMSO were also measured using calorimetry. To help interpret experimental results, ab initio calculations were performed on the reactant, product, and transition state entities to understand structures, reaction enthalpies and activation parameters. Markov chain Monte Carlo statistical sampling was used to determine a distribution of kinetic rates with respect to the uncertainties in measured concentrations and correlations between parameters imposed by a kinetics model. The reactions with 1-iodobutane are found to be slower in all cases compared to reactions under similar conditions for iodomethane. This is due to steric crowding around the reaction centre for the larger butyl group compared to methyl which results in a larger activation energy for the reaction.

Remarkable damage in talc caused by electron beam irradiation with a dose of up to 1000 kGy: lattice shrinkage in the Z- and Y-axis and corresponding intrinsic microstructural transformation process speculation. Abstract
To reduce the polluted areas caused by the migration of radioactive or toxic matter, a clear understanding of soil matrix stability, especially the lattice, is essential under irradiation conditions like those of β-ray irradiation. In reality, the matrix of soil or clay is silicate, with talc being one of the most simple species with a similar structure to that matter, exhibiting “2 : 1” stacking and a complete crystal. Therefore, in this work, it was irradiated by an electron beam in air with dose up to 1000 kGy. Then, variations in lattice and the intrinsic microstructural transformation process, especially in terms of defect formation and transformation, were explored. The main results show that irradiation led to talc lattice plane shrinkage and amorphization. Shrinkage and amorphization levels in the Z-axis were more serious than those in the Y-axis. For a 1000 kGy-irradiated sample, the shrinkage level of the (002) lattice plane was close to 2% near 0.2 Å and that of (020) was close to 1.3% near 0.06 Å. Variation in the (002) lattice plane was more obvious than that of (020). The main mechanisms involve the cleavage of tetrahedral Si–O and linkage of tetrahedra and octahedra. Tetrahedral Si–O cleavage was visible, leading to serious amorphization. Nevertheless, lattice plane shrinkage, especially in the Z-axis, was mainly caused by linkage cleavage in this direction. In addition to linkage cleavage, dehydroxylation and H2O volatilization occurred, coupled with H2O radiolysis. Nevertheless, those factors are secondary to lattice variation. Upon irradiation, tetrahedral Si–O and the links of tetrahedron and octahedron sheets are cleaved, leading to shrinkage and amorphization. That in the Z-axis is more pronounced than in the Y-axis.![]()

Abstract
We apply recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to predict the time evolution of the concentration profile of multiple species resulting from a set of interconnected chemical reactions. As a proof of concept of our approach, RNNs were trained on a synthetic dataset generated by solving the kinetic equations of a system of aqueous inorganic iodine reactions that can follow after nuclear reactor accidents. We examine the minimum dataset necessary to obtain accurate predictions and explore the ability of RNNs to interpolate and extrapolate when exposed to previously unseen data. We also investigate the limits of our RNN by evaluating the robustness of the training initialization on our dataset.
