Abstract
Objective To investigate serum inflammatory factors, vitamin D levels, and asthma severity in children with comorbid asthma and obesity/overweight, compared with those with asthma or obesity/overweight alone. Methods This retrospective comparative study included children suffering from asthma alone, asthma combined with obesity/overweight, or obesity/overweight alone at Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Hospital between January 2020 and December 2021. Results A total of 168 children (mean age: 4.32 ± 1.64 years; 117 males) were included. Compared with children with asthma alone (n = 56), those with comorbid asthma and obesity/overweight (n = 56) exhibited higher levels of serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) (35.75 ± 24.56 vs. 15.40 ± 19.67), TNF-α (15.44 ± 7.35 vs. 12.16 ± 7.24), and leptin (3.89 ± 3.81 vs. 1.27 ± 2.31), and lower levels of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-(OH) D3) (26.03 ± 10.77 vs. 37.15 ± 13.35), IL-10 (8.69 ± 2.76 vs. 15.32 ± 6.28), and IL-13 (449.40 ± 315.37 vs. 605.27 ± 351.02) (all P < 0.05). Compared with children with obese/overweight alone (n = 56), those with comorbid asthma and obesity/overweight had lower IL-10 (8.69 ± 2.76 vs. 12.29 ± 6.61) and higher IL-6 (35.75 ± 24.56 vs. 20.53 ± 17.07), IL-13 (449.40 ± 315.37 vs. 309.47 ± 257.45), and leptin (3.89 ± 3.81 vs. 2.48 ± 3.52) (all P < 0.05). Children with comorbid asthma and obesity/overweight showed higher Preschool Respiratory Assessment Measure (PRAM) scores (3.14 ± 2.40 vs. 1.93 ± 1.02, P = 0.008) and longer hospital stays (5.96 ± 1.25 vs. 5.29 ± 1.36 days, P = 0.007) compared to those with asthma alone. Conclusions Significant differences were observed in IL-6, IL-10, IL-13, 25-(OH) D3 levels, and leptin among children with asthma combined with obesity/overweight and those with asthma or obesity/overweight alone. Children with obesity/overweight alone displayed more severe clinical manifestations and longer hospital stays compared with those with asthma alone.

Abstract
Evidence on the association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and obesity during the first 5 years of life is limited in China. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between weight, weight for age z score (ZWAZ), weight for length/height z score (ZWHZ), and body mass index for age z score (ZBMI) and 25(OH)D. This was a large population-based cross-sectional multicenter study in which the children aged 0-5 years were recruited from 12 children's healthcare centers by a stratified cluster random-sampling method in 10 cities of the Jiangsu province, China. The 25(OH)D concentration was determined by ELISA. A total of 5289 children were investigated. For 0-71 months children with obesity and nonobesity, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 36.0% and 29.8%, and the 25(OH)D level was 59.8 and 64.0 nmol/L, respectively, and there were all significant difference. Compared with children with nonobesity, children with obesity had higher risk of vitamin D deficiency (OR [95% CI]: 1.33 [1.02, 1.72], p < .05), and had lower 25(OH)D level (β = -3.84, 95% CI = -7.58, -0.09, p < .05). The results for children aged 24-71 months were similar to those for children aged 0-71 months. However, no significant difference was observed in children aged 0-23 months. Vitamin D deficiency was observed in children with greater adiposity during the first 5 years of life. However, the results mainly came from those in the age group of 2 to 5 years instead of the first 2 years in their lives.

Abstract
Background Childhood asthma has substantial effects on children's health. It is important to identify factors in early life that influence childhood asthma. Accumulating evidence indicates that Helicobacter pylori may protect against allergic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between H. pylori infection and pediatric asthma in Chongqing, China. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study included healthy children aged 4–18 years who underwent a 13C urea breath test during medical checkups in 2021. All medical information was extracted from electronic medical records and a big data system. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between H. pylori infection and pediatric asthma, and multivariate regression models were adjusted for covariates. Results In our study, 2241 participants, including 1240 boys (55.33%) and 1001 girls (44.67%), underwent urea breath testing (average age: 8.67 ± 2.70 years). Among them, 292 (13.03%) were positive for H. pylori and 152 (6.78%) had asthma. The rates of asthma diagnosis in H. pylori-negative and -positive children were 7.23% and 3.77%, respectively (odds ratio = 1.995; 95% confidence interval: 1.003–3.968; P < .05). Furthermore, family history of asthma and the percentage of eosinophils in routine blood examination were associated with childhood asthma; however, the body mass index, platelet count, and serum vitamin D level were not. Conclusions We demonstrated a significant inverse association between H. pylori infection and pediatric asthma in Chongqing, China. Further studies are required to determine the causal association and underlying mechanisms to prevent and control childhood asthma.

Abstract
Obesity and asthma are epidemic in the United States and obesity is an independent risk factor for asthma. Low vitamin D levels (i.e. serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D) have been reported in patients with reduced lung function, more frequent respiratory infections, and asthma exacerbations. Experts have proposed that serum levels > 40 ng/mL are required to offer the immunomodulatory benefits of vitamin D. Low vitamin D levels are common in both obesity and asthma, but it is not known whether supplementation with vitamin D improves asthma symptoms. Guidance for drug development stresses the importance of early phase studies to establish accurate population pharmacokinetics (PK) and drug dosing prior to larger phase 3 trials. The PK of this fat-soluble vitamin in children with increased adiposity are unknown; as are the doses need to reach proposed immunomodulatory levels. The objective of this study is to characterize the PK of vitamin D in children with obesity. Children ages 6--18 years who had physician diagnosed asthma and a body mass index (BMI) >85th percentile will be randomized to receive either standard daily dosing or loading doses followed by standard daily dosing. Blood samples will be obtained to characterize the PK of vitamin D. The results of this study will be used to identify a sufficient dose of vitamin D supplement to raise serum levels above a pre-specified value that may result in anti-inflammatory actions that could improve asthma symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D has been found to be associated with the pathogenesis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the potential role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) is still unclear. AIM We aimed to investigate the association between calcium metabolism and ADHD symptomatology. METHODS We included 106 participants aged between 7 and 13 years old (51 ADHD patients, mean age: 9.54 ± 1.77, 55 healthy controls mean age: 9.97 ± 0.94) to this study. K-SADS-PL and Conners' Parent/Teacher Rating Scales, Stroop Test were performed. Blood samples to measure serum levels of Vitamin D, PTH, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were collected in the spring (March-April-May) to prevent seasonal variability. RESULTS PTH, P, and ALP values were significantly lower and Vitamin D, Ca, and Mg values were significantly higher in the ADHD group (P < 0.05, for all). Both groups had Vitamin D deficiency. Control group has lower Vitamin D levels than the ADHD group (respectively; 17.66 ± 9.07, 21.99 ± 10.99, P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between PTH and CTRS hyperactivity, CGI-RI and CGI-EL sub-scores, CGI-Total, DSM-IV-Inattention, DSM-IV Hyperactivity/Impulsivity, DSM-IV-Total scores (P < 0.05, for all). CONCLUSIONS We found lower PTH levels in ADHD patients and a strong and negative correlation between PTH and symptom severity. Future studies are needed to clarify if these findings are due to the key role of PTH in ADHD pathology or PTH's function in activating vitamin D.

Abstract
Introduction: L-Arginine (Arg) is a semi-essential amino acid. Constitutive and inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms convert Arg to nitric oxide (NO), a potent vaso- and bronchodilator with multiple biological functions. Atopic dermatitis (AD) and bronchial asthma (BA) are atopic diseases affecting many children globally. Several studies analyzed NO in airways, yet the systemic synthesis of NO in AD and BA in children with BA, AD or both is elusive. Methods: In a multicenter study, blood and urine were obtained from 130 of 302 participating children for the measurement of metabolites of the Arg/NO pathway (BA 31.5%; AD 5.4%; AD + BA 36.1%; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 12.3%). In plasma and urine amino acids Arg and homoarginine (hArg), both substrates of NOS, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), both inhibitors of NOS, dimethylamine (DMA), and nitrite and nitrate, were measured by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured in plasma and urine samples to evaluate possible effects of oxidative stress. Results: There were no differences in the Arg/NO pathway between the groups of children with different atopic diseases. In comparison to children with ADHD, children with AD, BA or AD and BA had higher plasma nitrite (p < 0.001) and nitrate (p < 0.001) concentrations, suggesting higher systemic NO synthesis in AD and BA. Urinary excretion of DMA was also higher (p = 0.028) in AD and BA compared to patients with ADHD, suggesting elevated ADMA metabolization. Discussion/Conclusion: The Arg/NO pathway is activated in atopic diseases independent of severity. Systemic NO synthesis is increased in children with an atopic disease. Plasma and urinary MDA levels did not differ between the groups, suggesting no effect of oxidative stress on the Arg/NO pathway in atopic diseases.

Abstract
PROBLEM The association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) level and asthma occurrence in children was controversial. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The Pubmed, Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library were systematically searched up to April 13th 2020. All the study measured the serum 25-OHD level in children, or classified the children based on the 25-OHD level into severe vitamin D deficiency, insufficient deficiency and comparing the prevalence of asthma in childhood were included in our study. SAMPLE A total of 35 studies were included in our meta-analysis. Among them, 24 studies were included for analyzing the association between 25-OHD level and asthma, and 12 studies evaluated the treatment effect of vitamin D. RESULTS The children with asthma (5711 participants) had significant lower 25-OHD level than children without asthma (21,561 participants) (21.7 ng/ml versus 26.5 ng/ml, SMD = -1.36, 95% = -2.40--0.32, P = 0.010). Besides, the children with asthma treated with vitamin D supplement had a significantly lower recurrence rate than the placebo group (18.4% versus 35.9%, RR = 0.35, 95%CI = 0.35-0.79, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Children with asthma had a lower 25-OHD level than healthy children. Vitamin D supplement could decrease the asthma recurrence rate in the follow-up years. IMPLICATIONS This study implies that lower 25-OHD may cause asthma in childhood.

Abstract
Vitamin D (VitD) may affect immune system modulation and result in the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, published findings have remained controversial. We investigated the association between early-life 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and AD risk at childhood with a birth cohort. The data were obtained from “the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS)” and “the Sub-Cohort study of JECS” performed with children aged 2 years. “Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry” was used to measure VitD. The information on AD was obtained from parents’ answers to a questionnaire when their children were aged 3 years. In order to explain the seasonal effects on VitD levels, a deseasonalized continuous variable was further calculated. The logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate the effect of VitD on childhood AD. The study included 4378 children with complete data on VitD and AD. The results from models indicated that low VitD at 2 years was not a risk factor for the development of AD at 3 years, after adjusting for potential confounders. Moreover, there was no U-shape relationship between deseasonalized VitD and childhood AD. Overall, early-life 25(OH)D levels were not link to the increased risk of developing childhood AD.

Abstract
Excess adipose tissue predisposes to an enhanced inflammatory state and can contribute to the pathogenesis and severity of asthma. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties and low-serum levels are seen in children with asthma and in children with obesity. Here we review the intersection of asthma, obesity, and hypovitaminosis D in children. Supplementation with vitamin D has been proposed as a simple, safe, and inexpensive adjunctive therapy in a number of disease states. However, little research has examined the pharmacokinetics of vitamin D and its therapeutic potential in children who suffer from obesity-related asthma.

Abstract
Vitamin D is customarily involved in maintaining bone and calcium homeostasis. However, contemporary studies have identified the implication of vitamin D in several cellular processes including cellular proliferation, differentiation, wound healing, repair and regulatory systems inclusive of host defence, immunity, and inflammation. Multiple studies have indicated corelations between low serum levels of vitamin D, perturbed pulmonary functions and enhanced incidences of inflammatory diseases. Almost all of the pulmonary diseases including acute lung injury, cystic fibrosis, asthma, COPD, Pneumonia and Tuberculosis, all are inflammatory in nature. Studies have displayed strong inter-relations with vitamin D deficiency and progression of lung disorders; however, the underlying mechanism is still unknown. Vitamin D has emerged to possess inhibiting effects on pulmonary inflammation while exaggerating innate immune defenses by strongly influencing functions of inflammatory cells including dendritic cells, monocyte/macrophages, T cells, and B cells along with structural epithelial cells. This review dissects the effects of vitamin D on the inflammatory cells and their therapeutic relevance in pulmonary diseases. Although, the data obtained is very limited and needs further corroboration but presents an exciting area of further research. This is because of its ease of supplementation and development of personalized medicine which could lead us to an effective adjunct and cost-effective method of therapeutic modality for highly fatal pulmonary diseases.

Abstract
Objective: The goal of this article is to review the past decade's literature and provide a critical commentary on the involvement of immunological mechanisms in normal brain development, as well as its role in the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome, other Chronic tic disorders (CTD), and related neuropsychiatric disorders including Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: We conducted a literature search using the Medline/PubMed and EMBASE electronic databases to locate relevant articles and abstracts published between 2009 and 2020, using a comprehensive list of search terms related to immune mechanisms and the diseases of interest, including both clinical and animal model studies. Results: The cellular and molecular processes that constitute our "immune system" are crucial to normal brain development and the formation and maintenance of neural circuits. It is also increasingly evident that innate and adaptive systemic immune pathways, as well as neuroinflammatory mechanisms, play an important role in the pathobiology of at least a subset of individuals with Tourette syndrome and related neuropsychiatric disorders In the conceptual framework of the holobiont theory, emerging evidence points also to the importance of the "microbiota-gut-brain axis" in the pathobiology of these neurodevelopmental disorders. Conclusions: Neural development is an enormously complex and dynamic process. Immunological pathways are implicated in several early neurodevelopmental processes including the formation and refinement of neural circuits. Hyper-reactivity of systemic immune pathways and neuroinflammation may contribute to the natural fluctuations of the core behavioral features of CTD, OCD, and ADHD. There is still limited knowledge of the efficacy of direct and indirect (i.e., through environmental modifications) immune-modulatory interventions in the treatment of these disorders. Future research also needs to focus on the key molecular pathways through which dysbiosis of different tissue microbiota influence neuroimmune interactions in these disorders, and how microbiota modification could modify their natural history. It is also possible that valid biomarkers will emerge that will guide a more personalized approach to the treatment of these disorders.

Abstract
Even though vitamin D is widely acknowledged as having a potential immunomodulatory role in asthma, its exact beneficial mechanisms are yet to be clarified. An optimal serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-VitD) level in pediatric asthma patients might not rely solely on the effect of dose-dependent vitamin D3 intake, but might also be influenced by factors related to insufficient asthma control. We aimed to survey the prevalence of serum 25-OH-VitD deficiency and analyze whether suboptimal levels were associated with asthma severity factors. The current cross-sectional study enrolled 131 pediatric asthma or asthma-suggestive recurrent wheezing patients, for whom serum 25-OH-VitD, IgE, and eosinophil count were assessed. The prevalence of suboptimal serum 25-OH-VitD was 58.8%. A suboptimal vitamin D status was associated with asthma exacerbation in the previous month (p = 0.02). Even under seasonal oral vitamin D3 supplementation, patients with a positive history of asthma attack in the previous four weeks presented significantly lower serum 25-OH-VitD concentrations, compared to their peers with no disease exacerbation. In conclusion, sequential measurements of serum 25-OH-VitD might prove useful for future studies evaluating the dynamic changes in vitamin D3 status in regard to asthma, especially in symptomatic patients.

Vitamin D and childhood asthma: causation and contribution to disease activity. Curr Opin Allergy Clin Immunol 2020; 19:126-131. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the literature of the past 18 months (April 2017 through September, 2018) relating to vitamin D and childhood asthma. RECENT FINDINGS A combined analysis of two clinical trials of maternal vitamin D supplementation trials showed a significant protective effect of vitamin D supplementation trials in the primary prevention of asthma and recurrent wheeze up to age 3 years. Secondary analyses from these trials have also suggested that initial maternal vitamin D status could affect the response to supplementation during pregnancy, with the biggest protective effect in children born to mothers with initial 25hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels of at least 30 ng/ml. A postnatal, 6-month vitamin D supplementation trial in black, premature babies showed a 34% decreased risk of recurrent wheezing at 1 year among the infants who received supplementation. An individual patient data meta-analysis of published clinical trials concluded that vitamin D supplementation decreased the risk of asthma exacerbations in those with 25OHD levels less than 10 ng/ml. Results of observational analyses on primary prevention of asthma and in prevention of exacerbations remain mixed, with the bulk of the evidence suggesting that there is a protective effect of higher vitamin D levels. SUMMARY Evidence continues to accumulate that vitamin D supplementation helps to prevent the development of asthma and recurrent wheeze in early life, and may also help in the management of asthma. The level(s) of circulating vitamin D that maximizes these effects remains to be identified.

Abstract
Objective: To measure levels of vitamin A (VA) and vitamin D (VD) and the symptomatic association of their co-deficiencies on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Chinese children (6-9 years). Methods: Eighty-two children (69 boys and 13 girls; mean age = 7.1 ± 0.9 years at the time of the diagnosis) with ADHD were recruited as ADHD group. A total of 106 healthy children were recruited as the healthy control (HC) group. Serum levels of retinol and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) of all children were evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry. The Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV Rating Scale (SNAP-IV) was employed to assess the clinical symptoms of ADHD. Results: Children suffering from ADHD had significantly reduced serum levels of retinol and 25(OH)D compared with those of HCs, and the prevalence of VA deficiency and VD deficiency were higher in children suffering from ADHD. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D and retinol were linked closely with the presence or absence of ADHD after adjustment for age, body mass index, season of blood sampling, and sun exposure. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D and retinol showed a negative correlation with the total scores of SNAP-IV. Children with ADHD as well as VA and VD co-deficiency had increased SNAP-IV total scores and ADHD inattention subscale scores. Conclusion: VA deficiency and VD deficiency in children with ADHD were increased in comparison with that in HCs. VA and VD co-deficiency associated with ADHD symptom severity. Attention should be paid to regular testing of VA levels and VD levels. However, the mechanism of VA and VD in ADHD needs to be further studied. Interventional studies on VA and VD supplementation are recommended to further verify the relationship between VA and VD co-deficiency and ADHD.

Abstract
As saliva showed to be a noninvasive source of markers useful to monitor clinical status, the hypothesis tested was that saliva may provide reliable markers able to predict the body fat accumulation in young subjects. The salivary characteristics of 248 adolescent scholars (119 girls; 14-17 years) of flow rate, pH, phosphorus, urea, and calcium concentrations were assessed in stimulated saliva (colorimetric automated technique). The concentrations of cholesterol, 7-ketocholesterol, 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and D3, and uric acid (UA) were measured with high-performance liquid chromatography in saliva collected at home (12-hour fast). Physical examination included height, weight, and body fat percentage (%BF) measured using bioelectric impedance to classify groups in below/above the %BF cutoff. Data were evaluated using 2-way analysis of variance and multiple linear regression. No significant difference was found in the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and D3, cholesterol, 7-ketocholesterol, phosphorus, calcium, and urea between groups above and below %BF cutoff, and the variation in salivary flow was small. Significant sex and group effects were observed for salivary UA, which was increased in adolecents with higher %BF and in males (compared to females), without sex group interaction (power = 99.8%). Sex showed a significant effect on salivary urea, with lower levels in females. A predictive model was obtained, with salivary UA and sex explaining the variation of %BF (P < .001; power = 84%). Salivary UA showed to be an important marker of body fat accumulation in adolescents, demonstrating the clinical relevance of saliva to detect early changes and to monitor the nutritional status using a noninvasive and accurate method.

Abstract
Objective: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted to assess the benefits and harms of vitamin D supplementation for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients. Methods: We followed the standard methodological procedures of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Intervention. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Science and Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Social Science and Humanities (Web of Science), ClincalTrials.gov, and World Health Organization's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform were searched for RCTs in January 2019. Independently, two authors (J.G., T.X.) extracted data, assessed the risk of bias, combined the data, and graded evidence quality using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. Our primary outcomes were assessed through rating scales of ADHD severity. Secondary outcomes measured were the possible adverse effects of vitamin D supplementation and vitamin D status after supplementation for ADHD. Results: We included four RCTs with 256 children addressing vitamin D supplementation as adjunctive therapy to methylphenidate on ADHD symptoms. Vitamin D supplementation demonstrated a small but statistically significant improvement in ADHD total scores, inattention scores, hyperactivity scores, and behavior scores. The improvement was likely limited due to the low to very low quality of evidence in the literature. There was no statistically significant improvement in oppositional scores. Reported adverse events in the vitamin D group were mild and not significantly different from the control group. Vitamin D supplementation increased serum vitamin D levels and the ratio of patients with sufficient vitamin D levels. Conclusions: Vitamin D supplementation as adjunctive therapy to methylphenidate appeared to reduce ADHD symptoms without serious adverse events, associated with improved vitamin D status. However, considering the generally low strength of evidence, well-designed RCTs are needed to determine the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation for both children and adults with ADHD, especially in the setting of a combination of vitamin D and other ADHD treatments.

Abstract
The growing prevalence of childhood obesity has become a serious health problem over the past few decades. Although the immune system is greatly affected by childhood obesity, whether obesity influences the T cell development in the thymus is poorly understood. In this study, we used a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mice model to study the influence of HFD from weaning on the thymus. C57BL/6 mice (male, 3 weeks old) were fed a HFD or standard diet (lean controls) for 6 weeks. The bodyweight of mice fed with an HFD was 28% higher than that in the control group, while the thymus weight of HFD mice decreased by 15% compared with controls. As expected, thymic triacylglycerol content of the HFD mice increased by 37% compared to the control mice. Importantly, the frequencies of CD4+ and CD8+ single-positive (SP) thymocytes decreased by 38% and 44%, respectively. The apoptotic analysis revealed that thymic tissue of HFD mice had a higher level of Annexin-V positive thymocytes than control animals. Furthermore, the immunoblotting analysis showed that survival signal pathways in the thymus were impaired in the HFD mice, including the AKT/mTOR and ERK pathways. With the analysis of T-cell receptor excision circles (TREC), we found that HFD-induced obesity decreased recent thymic emigrants in spleen tissue. Our findings indicate that HFD from the weaning period impairs T cell development in the thymus, possibly by induction of apoptosis of thymocytes, involving disruption of survival signal pathways.

Abstract
Background There is growing literature suggesting a link between vitamin D and asthma lung function, but the results from systematic reviews are conflicting. We conducted this meta-analysis to investigate the relation between serum vitamin D and lung function in asthma patients. Methods Major databases, including OVID, MEDLINE, Web of Science and PUBMED, were searched until 10th October 2018. All published observational studies related to vitamin D and asthma were extracted. All meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.3.5. Results This quantitative synthesis found that asthma patients with low vitamin D levels had lower forced expiratory volume In 1 s (FEV1) (mean difference (MD) = − 0.1, 95% CI = − 0.11 to − 0.08,p < 0.01;I2 = 49%, p = 0.12) and FEV1% (MD = − 10.02, 95% CI = − 11 to − 9.04, p < 0.01; I2 = 0%, p = 0.82) than those with sufficient vitamin D levels. A positive relation was found between vitamin D and FEV1 (r = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.2, p = 0.003; I2 = 59%,p = 0.01), FEV1% (r = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.13 to 0.26, p < 0.001; I2 = 42%, p = 0.11), forced vital capacity (FVC) (r = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.00 to 0.34, p = 0.05; I2 = 60%, p = 0.04), FEV1/FVC (r = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.3 to 0.51, p < 0.001; I2 = 48%, p = 0.07), and the asthma control test (ACT) (r = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.2 to 0.47, p < 0.001; I2 = 0%, p = 0.7). Subgroup analysis indicated that the positive correlation between vitamin D and lung function remained significant in both children and adults. Conclusions Our meta-analysis suggested that serum vitamin D levels may be positively correlated with lung function in asthma patients. Future comprehensive studies are required to confirm these relations and to elucidate potential mechanisms.

Abstract
Objective: The pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis (AD) involves a complex interplay between immune system dysfunction, genetics, and environmental factors. It is well known that nutritional status is essential to a proper functioning immune system, leading to a highly debated question regarding the role of dietary factors in the pathogenesis of AD. Food allergies and elimination diets have been broadly studied in atopy; however, less consideration has been given to how vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients influence the risk for AD and severity of symptoms. This systematic review discusses evidence on how various micronutrients, including vitamins (C, E, and D) and trace minerals (zinc, selenium, iron, copper, magnesium, and strontium) are associated with AD, and how supplementation influence disease severity. Design: A systematic search was conducted to identify the role that oral micronutrients have on AD. The authors reviewed 49 studies herein. Results: While there are weak associations between vitamins C or E and AD, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that vitamin D supplementation provides benefit in AD patients. Deficiency of selenium and zinc may exacerbate AD. Current reports are not sufficient to confidently discern the role of other vitamins and trace minerals on AD. Conclusions: Though oral micronutrients may play a role in AD, the current literature is limited, and there is a need for more comprehensive randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to truly decipher the role between oral micronutrients and AD.
