The moderating role of emotional stability in the relationship between exposure to violence and anxiety and depression

When fate hands you lemons: A moderated moderation model of bullying victimization and psychological distress among Chinese adolescents during floods and the COVID-19 pandemic

Background

Bullying is a major problem worldwide and has numerous detrimental effects on the mental health of victims. The link between bullying and psychological distress in adolescents is well known. However, few studies have analyzed the impact of combined interpersonal, peer, and cultural factors on psychological distress using a social-ecological system framework in Eastern countries. Negotiable fate is a cultural belief common in Eastern societies that suggests that people can negotiate with fate for more control by exercising personal agency within the limits of what fate has determined. This study examined the moderating effects of neuroticism and negotiable fate on the relationship between bullying victimization and psychological distress among Chinese adolescents. Moreover, human society commonly suffers from multiple disasters that lead to severe mental health problems. There are few empirical studies on the effects of bullying among adolescents in multiple disaster contexts. This study included participants who experienced floods and COVID-19 simultaneously in 2021.

Materials and methods

We conducted a cross-sectional cluster sampling study from August 6 to 9, 2021, approximately 2 weeks after the start of the Zhengzhou City flooding and 7 days after the new wave of the COVID-19 outbreak in Zhengzhou City. The study included 1,207 participants (52.4% men, n = 633; M _age = 14.36, SD = 0.94) from a middle school in Zhengzhou City, China.

Results

The results revealed that bullying was positively linked to psychological distress (β = 0.5.34, p < 0.001, [0.73, 9.95]). Neuroticism and negotiable fate significantly moderated the relationship between the effects of bullying and psychological distress (β = -3.58, p < 0.05, 95% CI [-6.12, -1.04]). Specifically, high neuroticism increased the risk of psychological distress in adolescents bullied before a disaster. High or low neuroticism and high negotiable fate buffered the link between bullying and psychological distress.

Conclusion

This study showed that neuroticism and negotiable fate moderated the relationship between bullying victimization and psychological distress in Chinese students with COVID-19 and flood disasters. High negotiable fate and high or low neuroticism could help adolescents bullied in school to be immune from psychological distress in catastrophe. The results highlight the importance of considering the interplay between bullying, neuroticism, and a sense of controllable destiny when examining adolescents' psychological distress.

Co-worker ostracism and promotive voice: a self-consistency motivation analysis

This study utilizes self-consistency motivational theory to investigate the association between employees' experience of co-worker ostracism and their promotive voice, while also examining the mediating role of organization-based self-esteem (OBSE) and the moderating effect of emotional stability. We collected three-wave data from personnel in North American organizations and found that social exclusion by co-workers hinders employees' expression of constructive views about work-related matters as it dampens their OBSE. We observed that this mediating role of OBSE is mitigated to the extent to which employees have emotional stability, a dispositional feature that helps them control emotions, discipline impulses, and handle challenges. Overall, our study identifies a key mechanism, employees' belief about their self-esteem and proficiency as an organizational member, through which co-worker exclusion hampers promotive voice, and it reveals how their emotional stability might contain this process.

The Contributions of Indigenous Personality and Parenting Style to Life Satisfaction Development in Chinese Adolescents

The present three-wave longitudinal study examined the contributions of indigenous personality traits and parenting style to life satisfaction in Chinese adolescents. Seven hundred and ten junior high school students (M age = 11.39, SD age = 0.53; 53.2% girls) were administered self-report measures of personality, parenting styles, and life satisfaction in Grade 6. Data on life satisfaction were collected again in Grades 7 and 8, respectively. Latent growth model analyses indicated that life satisfaction decreased over time. Regression analyses showed that the initial level of global life satisfaction was positively predicted by personality factors of dependability and interpersonal relatedness; the slope of global life satisfaction was positively predicted by personality factors of emotional stability whereas negatively predicted by interpersonal relatedness. The initial levels and slopes of different domains of life satisfaction were predicted by personality factors and parenting styles to different extents. Meanwhile, paternal and maternal parenting styles had different effects on adolescents' life satisfaction. The study provided valuable information about the contributions of indigenous personality and both paternal and maternal parenting styles to psychological adjustment in the Chinese context. The implications of the findings concerning the associations among personality, parenting styles, and life satisfaction were discussed.

Emotional intelligence and cognitive skills protecting mental health from stress and violence among Ghanaian youth

This study investigates the protective mental health function of high emotional intelligence (EI), and cognitive skills (CS) among Ghanaian adolescents when exposed to stressful life-events and violence. It examines, first, how exposure to stressful life-events and violent experiences is associated with mental health, indicated by depressive and psychological distress symptoms, and, second, whether EI and CS could serve as possible moderators between stress, violence and mental health problems. Participants were 415 Ghanaian secondary education students. They reported about their depressive symptoms (Bireleson), psychological distress (Strength and Difficult Questionnaire, SDQ), and emotional intelligence (Trait Emotional Intelligence Question-naire, TEIQue), cognitive skills (The Amsterdam Executive Function Inventory). They also reported their stressful life-events and violent experiences. Statistical analyses were conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM). As hypothesized, high level of stressful life events were associated with high levels of depressive symptoms and psychological distress. Yet violent experiences did not associate with mental health problems. Against hypothesis, high levels of EI and CS could not protect adolescents mental health from negative effects of stressful life events or violent experiences. A direct effects were found between low level of EI and CS and high level of mental health problems. The results are discussed in relations to psychological and cultural factors present in EI and CS in adolescence.

VIVÊNCIAS DE VIOLÊNCIA NO PROCESSO DE FORMAÇÃO EM ENFERMAGEM: REPERCUSSÕES NA CORPOREIDADE DOS JOVENS

RESUMO Objetivo: conhecer as vivências de violência entre os jovens estudantes de enfermagem no decorrer da sua formação profissional e as repercussões desse fenômeno em sua corporeidade. Método: pesquisa exploratória, descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, realizada entre junho e agosto de 2013 com 21 jovens estudantes de enfermagem em uma universidade pública de Santa Catarina. A produção das informações ocorreu com base no Método Criativo e Sensível, mediado pelas Dinâmicas de Criatividade e Sensibilidade. Para a análise das informações, foi utilizada a Hermenêutica com suporte do referencial teórico-filosófico de Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Resultados: emergiram dois temas: situações de violência vivenciadas pelos jovens no processo de formação em enfermagem e repercussões da violência na corporeidade do jovem. Os resultados revelam a violência simbólica presente nas relações de autoridade entre docentes e discentes e nos conflitos entre profissionais dos serviços de saúde e acadêmicos. Os jovens entendem que a violência está naturalizada no seu viver e interfere em sua corporeidade perturbando o existir, provocando sentimentos de ausência, distanciamento e indiferença, os quais repercutem em sua saúde e nas suas práticas de cuidado. Conclusão: a violência presente no processo de formação em enfermagem interfere na corporeidade, no modo de ser e na construção do jovem como um ser de cuidado. A pesquisa revelou elementos importantes para refletir acerca da violência presente no contexto da formação em enfermagem e subsidiar ações dos docentes e profissionais de saúde e enfermagem que atuam nos cenários de práticas.
