Abstract
Adequate sleep is crucial for healthy development, contributing significantly to physical and mental well-being. While research on paediatric sleep is expanding, there remain several open questions. This narrative review provides an overview of our current knowledge on paediatric sleep health and identifies literature gaps, considering factors such as age, gender, cultural differences, and the interplay between sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and mental health. It also considers sleep health in the more specific group of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. By viewing paediatric sleep health as a multidimensional construct, this review discusses age-specific issues, including the different factors affecting satisfaction, daytime alertness, sleep timing, efficiency and duration, and sleep-related behaviours. While gender differences in sleep health become apparent after puberty, few studies have addressed sex differences in children or different parental attitudes toward sleep in boys and girls. Cultural differences in sleep duration, timing, and setting are reported from infancy through adolescence; however, the cultural influence on sleep health, particularly during adolescence, remains unclear. This is crucial when considering the effects of screen time, smartphone use, and social media exposure on sleep. Further research is required to understand how sleep, nutrition, and physical health interact throughout the developmental span. Additionally, this review underscores the protective nature of sleep for adolescent mental health and for the management of emotional and behavioural problems in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The review identifies critical areas for future research to enhance our understanding of paediatric sleep health and develop more effective and tailored interventions and preventive programmes.

Abstract
Background Hepatic glycogen storage diseases (GSDs) are characterised by enzyme defects affecting liver glycogen metabolism, where carbohydrate supplementation to prevent overnight hypoglycaemia is common. Concerns around sleep quality in hepatic GSDs relate to emerging evidence that overnight dysglycaemia impacts sleep quality. Methods This prospective observational study reported sleep quality and duration in children with hepatic GSDs over 7 days utilising: actigraphy (Actiwatch 2 by Phillips Respironics), sleep diaries, proxy reported age-appropriate sleep and quality-of-life (QoL) questionnaires, in the context of nocturnal glycaemic profiles continuous glucose monitor (CGM, Dexcom G6) and nocturnal dietary management strategies. Significant hypo- and hyperglycaemia were defined as ≥1% of sleep diary documented nocturnal period, recording <3.5 and >10.0 mmol/L, respectively. Results Seven children with hepatic GSD (aged 1-17 years) participated. Objective sleep quality was poor, with actigraphy demonstrating that no child achieved the minimum sleep duration recommended for age. Subjective sleep quality was also poor, with 4/5 documenting significant daytime sleepiness and 6/6 reporting poor sleep hygiene. Children prescribed overnight bolus feeds (OBF) (n = 2) recorded shorter sleep duration compared to other nocturnal management strategies. Parent-reported QoL suggested poor disease-related QoL outcomes for this cohort. Conclusion Objective and subjective sleep disturbances and reduced QoL are common within our sample of children with hepatic GSD. From our observations these outcomes may be linked to nutritional overnight interventions, especially OBFs, rather than overnight glucose levels. Consideration of the impacts of overnight feeding strategies on sleep quality and QoL in children with hepatic GSD should inform future management strategies.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association of nighttime awakenings at 12 months with the duration and efficiency of nighttime sleep at 6 years of age. Methods Data from two population-based prospective studies (The Pelotas 2004 and The Pelotas 2015 Birth Cohorts) were used. Information on nighttime awakenings was provided by mothers during the 12-month follow-up interview. Infants who awakened >3 times after sleep onset at 12 months were considered frequent wakeners. Sleep duration and sleep efficiency were obtained by actigraphy at the 6-year follow-up. Children wore the device at the wrist of the non-dominant arm continuously for 3-7 days, including at least one weekend day. Unadjusted and adjusted beta coefficients were obtained by linear regression for each cohort separately. Results 2500 children from the 2004 and 2793 from the 2015 cohort had full information on nighttime awakenings at 12 months and actigraphy at 6 years and were analyzed. Prevalence of frequent wakeners was 6.3 % and 5.9 % in the 2004 and 2015 cohort, respectively. Mean bedtime and wake-up time at 6 years were, respectively, 23:23 and 08:41 h in the 2004 cohort, and 00:10 and 09:00 h int the 2015 cohort. Nighttime sleep lasted on average 7.54 and 7.24 h respectively in the 2004 and the 2015 cohort, and the sleep efficiency was 81.1 and 82.5 % respectively. In adjusted analyses, no associations were found between awakening at 12 months and sleep duration or sleep efficiency at 6 years of age. Conclusion In both cohorts sleep duration and efficiency were below the recommendation for school-age children (respectively 9-11 h and 85 %). There was no relationship between the number of nighttime awakenings at 12 months and sleep duration or efficiency at 6 years.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between chronotype, video game addiction, and sleep quality in school-age children using structural equation modeling. It was performed using structural equation modeling, with 545 secondary school students in northern Turkey meeting the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews utilizing the Personal Information Form, the Morningness Eveningness Scale for Children (MESC), the Video Game Addiction Scale for Children (VASC), and the Sleep Quality Scale. The findings revealed that the average video game addiction score of children was 55.22, which was associated with poor sleep quality and efficiency. Additionally, chronotype was found to mediate the relationship between video game addiction and both sleep quality (β = 0.024; p < 0.001) and sleep efficiency (β = -0.068; p < 0.001). The model was found to be close to acceptable levels for the variables according to the fit indices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Today's internet is an unavoidable component of educational sources, the entertainment field, and telecommunication processes. Internet usage is more likely among adolescents and young adults in the form of surfing, chatting, playing games, and fulfilling their social needs. The present study has been planned to assess the effect of internet addiction (IA) on sleep quality in school children. METHODS This cross-sectional school-based study was conducted among school students in Pondicherry. A total of 350 school students of both genders studying in grades six to 10 and having access to at least one device with internet for more than one year were recruited from government and private schools located in five randomly selected communes in Pondicherry by convenient sampling method. Assessment of IA was done using Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PQSI) questionnaire assessed the participants' sleep quality. All the data was tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Chi-square and unpaired t-tests were used for analysis. RESULTS The average age of the participants is 13 years. 49 (26.1%) are children and 139 (73.9%) are adolescents. The majority of them are females belonging to the adolescent age group (169, 89.4%). Around 17 (19.5%) children and 70 (80.5%) adolescents reported mild IA. Thirteen (59.1%) children and nine (40.9%) adolescents reported moderate IA. There is no significant difference in sleep quality between children and adolescents (4±2.33 vs. 3.62±2.61, p=0.37) but there is a considerable difference in their levels of IA (32.98±21.06 vs. 25.6±15.08, p=0.01). Conclusion: This study found a significant relationship between IA and poor sleep quality among adolescents. Thus, adolescents, parents, school authorities, and researchers should understand the importance of regulating internet usage and encouraging sleep hygiene. Thus, appropriate measures should be taken to address the effects of IA on sleep quality.

Abstract
Sleeping problems are prevalent among children and adolescents, often leading to frequent consultations with pediatricians. While cognitive-behavioral therapy has shown effectiveness, especially in the short term, there is a lack of globally endorsed guidelines for the use of pharmaceuticals or over-the-counter remedies in managing sleep onset insomnia. An expert panel of pediatric sleep specialists and chronobiologists met in October 2023 to develop practical recommendations for pediatricians on the management of sleep onset insomnia in typically developing children. When sleep onset insomnia is present in otherwise healthy children, the management should follow a stepwise approach. Practical sleep hygiene indications and adaptive bedtime routine, followed by behavioral therapies, must be the first step. When these measures are not effective, low-dose melatonin, administered 30-60 min before bedtime, might be helpful in children over 2 years old. Melatonin use should be monitored by pediatricians to evaluate the efficacy as well as the presence of adverse effects. Conclusion: Low-dose melatonin is a useful strategy for managing sleep onset insomnia in healthy children who have not improved or have responded insufficiently to sleep hygiene and behavioral interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems in children have been increasingly recognized as a major public health issue. Previous research has extensively studied and presented many risk factors and potential mechanisms for children's sleep problems. In this paper, we aimed to identify and summarize the consequences and implications of child sleep problems. DATA SOURCES A comprehensive search for relevant English language full-text, peer-reviewed publications was performed focusing on pediatric sleep studies from prenatal to childhood and adolescence in a variety of indexes in PubMed, SCOPUS, and Psych Info published in the past two decades. Both relevant data-based articles and systematic reviews are included. RESULTS Many adverse consequences are associated with child sleep deficiency and other sleep problems, including physical outcomes (e.g., obesity), neurocognitive outcomes (e.g., memory and attention, intelligence, academic performance), and emotional and behavioral outcomes (e.g., internalizing/externalizing behaviors, behavioral disorders). Current prevention and intervention approaches to address childhood sleep problems include nutrition, exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, aromatherapy, acupressure, and mindfulness. These interventions may be particularly important in the context of coronavirus disease 2019. Specific research and policy strategies can target the risk factors of child sleep as well as the efficacy and accessibility of treatments. CONCLUSIONS Given the increasing prevalence of child sleep problems, which have been shown to affect children's physical and neurobehavioral wellbeing, understanding the multi-aspect consequences and intervention programs for childhood sleep is important to inform future research direction as well as a public health practice for sleep screening and intervention, thus improving sleep-related child development and health.

Sleep impairments and quality of life in Thai adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus. J Pediatr Nurs 2022; 67:e58-e64. Abstract
PURPOSE Adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are susceptible to sleep impairments. We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors related to sleep impairments, and the associations of sleep impairments with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Thai adolescents with SLE. METHODS Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQA), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ 4.0 Core Scales were administered to 57 participants with SLE aged 13-18 years to evaluate sleep, depression, and HRQOL, respectively. Participants were divided into "good sleep" (PSQI scores <5) and "poor sleep" groups (PSQI scores ≥5). Participants with body mass index (BMI) >23 kg/m2 were classified into the high BMI group. FINDINGS Eighteen participants (31.6%) were in the poor sleep group. High BMI and PHQA scores were associated with sleep impairments with the odds ratio of 8.00 (95% CI 1.50-42.64; p = 0.02), and 1.25 (95% CI 1.01-1.54; p = 0.04), respectively. In terms of HRQOL, adolescents with SLE had the highest scores in social functioning and the lowest scores in school functioning. Good sleepers had better scores than poor sleepers across all sub-categories except for social functioning, and the difference was significant in emotional functioning (90% (IQR 75-100) vs. 70% (IQR 55-85); p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS A substantial number of adolescents with SLE had sleep impairments, which decreased HRQOL, particularly in emotional functioning. Sleep impairments were associated with obesity and depression. IMPLICATIONS Proactive management in addressing weight, mood, and sleep problems should be included in the multidisciplinary care of adolescents with SLE to improve their health and well-being.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea affects a large proportion of otherwise healthy children in the context of interactions between craniofacial elements, adenotonsillar hypertrophy and other anatomical factors, and neuromuscular reflexes of the upper airway. In light of the adverse consequences of sleep apnea, it is important not only to proceed with early diagnosis but also to implement adequate treatment that is guided by the pathophysiological determinants of the disease in each child. Here, we will describe the current standard of care approaches to the treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, and will also explore novel management strategies that should enable more personalized therapy in the near future.

Sleep disturbance and psychological distress among hospitalized children in India: Parental perceptions on pediatric inpatient experiences. J SPEC PEDIATR NURS 2022; 27:e12361. Abstract
PURPOSE Investigate parental perceptions of children's sleep disturbance and psychological distress associated with an inpatient stay in a low-resource hospital setting. DESIGN AND METHODS Demographic and validated survey instruments were adapted for administration to parents of children in the medical wards of a tertiary hospital in India. Parents proficient in English, Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu with a child age 4-12 years admitted for at least 48 h were eligible to participate. All respondents completed the Factors Affecting Sleep Disturbance Scale, Sleep Duration Questionnaire, Sleep Disturbance Scale, and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Data analysis entailed descriptive statistics, correlations, and multivariate regressions to analyze relationships across responses on demographics, sleep disturbance, and psychological distress. RESULTS Among 105 parents with hospitalized children, most had children 4-6 years old (54%), including 65% boys and 35% girls. Parents reported that their children slept overnight in the hospital for a mean of 8.3 ± 1.6 h. Children 4-6 year old (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 0.63, p = .004), dyspnea (RRR = 8.73, p = .04), previous hospitalization (RRR = 9.17, p = .03), nighttime procedures (RRR = 2.97, p = .03, and missing home (RRR = 6.78, p < .001) were the factors affecting sleep. Factors affecting psychological distress was nighttime medication administration (RRR = 4.92, p = .01). Sleep disturbances correlated with psychological distress (r = 0.56; p < .01). CONCLUSION Sleep disturbance and associated psychological distress in hospitalized children were widely reported by parents queried in this low-resource hospital setting. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Nurses can lead efforts in ameliorating sleep in hospitalized children, including partnering with stakeholders on measures to reduce sleep disruption. Child-centered interventions may improve sleep hygiene and decrease psychological distress among children.

Which Is More Important for Health: Sleep Quantity or Sleep Quality? CHILDREN-BASEL 2021; 8:children8070542. Abstract
Sleep is one of the basic physiological processes for human survival. Both sleep quantity and sleep quality are fundamental components of sleep. This review looks at both sleep quantity and sleep quality, considering how to manage the complex but probably unavoidable physiological phenomenon of sleep. The need for sleep has marked variations between individuals, in addition to the effects of variable conditions. Studies on sleep quality started later than those on sleep quantity, beginning in 1989 when Ford and Kamerow revealed that insomnia increases the risk of psychiatric disorders. According to the nationwide research team on the quality of sleep (19FA0901), sleep quality is superior to sleep quantity as an index for assessing sleep, and that restfulness obtained through sleep is a useful index for assessing sleep quality. We should pay more attention to obtaining sleep of good quality (restfulness, no sleepiness, no need for more sleep, sufficient objective sleep depth, etc.), although there have not been enough studies on the associations between sleep quality and health or disorders in children and adolescents. Further studies using the deviation from an individual’s optimal sleep quantity may show us another aspect of the effects of sleep quantity on various life issues.
