Abstract
In contrast to its widespread traditional and popular culinary use to reduce weight, Vigna angularis (adzuki beans) was not subjected to sufficient scientific scrutiny. Particularly, its saponins whose role was never investigated before to unveil the beans' antidiabetic and anti-obesity effects. Four vital pancreatic and intestinal carbohydrate enzymes were selected to assess the potency of the triterpenoidal saponins of V. angularis to bind and activate these proteins through high-precision molecular modeling and dynamics mechanisms with accurate molecular mechanics Generalized Born Surface Area (MMGBSA) energy calculations; thus, recognizing their anti-obesity potential. Our results showed that adzukisaponin VI and adzukisaponin IV were the best compounds in the α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymatic grooves, respectively. Adzukisaponin VI and angulasaponin C were the best fitting in the N-termini of sucrase-isomaltose (SI) enzyme, and angulasaponin C was the best scoring compound in maltase-glucoamylase C-termini. All of them outperformed the standard drug acarbose. These compounds in their protein complexes were selected to undergo molecular simulations of the drug-bound protein compared to the apo-protein through 100 ns, which confirmed the consistency of binding to the key amino acid residues in the four enzyme pockets with the least propensity of unfolding. Detailed analysis is given of the different polar and hydrophobic binding interactions of docked compounds. While maltase-adzukisaponin VI complex scored the lowest MMGBSA free energy of -67.77 Kcal/mol, α-amylase complex with angulasaponin B revealed the free binding energy of -74.18 Kcal/mol with a dominance of van der Waals energy (ΔEVDW) and the least change from the start to the end of the simulation time. This study will direct researchers to the significance of isolating the pure adzuki saponin components to conduct future in vitro and in vivo experimental works and even clinical trials.

Abstract
Food is our daily companion, performing numerous beneficial functions for our bodies. Many of them can help to alleviate or prevent ailments and diseases. In this review, an extensive bibliographic search is conducted in various databases to update information on unprocessed foods with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can aid in treating diseases such as cancer. The current state of knowledge on inflammatory processes involving some interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is reviewed. As well as unprocessed foods, which may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are important factors in cancer development. Many studies are still needed to take full advantage of the food products we use daily.

Abstract
Vigna angularis is an edible crop and herbal medicine that is known to have antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-edema effects. Many studies have been conducted on the 95% ethanol extract of V. angularis, but there is little research on the 70% ethanol extract and hemiphloin, which is a new indicator component of the 70% ethanol extract of V. angularis. To investigate the in vitro anti-atopic effect and verify the mechanism action of 70% ethanol extract of V. angularis (VAE), TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT keratinocytes were used. The VAE treatment alleviated TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, CCL17/TARC, and CCL22/MDC gene expressions and productions. VAE also inhibited the phosphorylation of MAPKs, including p38, ERK, JNK, STAT1, and NF-κB in TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT cells. 2,4-dinitochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced skin inflammation mice model, and HaCaT keratinocytes were used. In the DNCB-induced mouse model, VAE treatment alleviated ear thicknesses and IgE levels. Furthermore, VAE decreased IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, CCL17/TARC, and CCL22/MDC gene expressions of DNCB-applied ear tissue. Additionally, we investigated the anti-atopic and anti-inflammatory effects of hemiphloin using TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT keratinocytes and LPS-induced J774 macrophages. Treatment hemiphloin decreased gene expressions and productions of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, CCL17/TARC, and CCL22/MDC in TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT cells. The phosphorylations of p38, ERK, STAT1, and NF-κB were inhibited by hemiphloin in TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT cells. Finally, hemiphloin showed anti-inflammatory activities in LPS-induced J774 cells. It decreased LPS-induced NO productions and iNOS and COX-2 expressions. Treatment of hemiphloin also inhibited LPS-induced TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 gene expressions. These results suggest that VAE is an anti-inflammatory agent for inflammatory skin diseases and that hemiphloin could be a therapeutic candidate for inflammatory skin diseases.

Abstract
Legumes are a staple of diets all around the world. In some least developed countries, they are the primary source of protein; however, their beneficial properties go beyond their nutritional value. Recent research has shown that legumes have bioactive compounds like peptides, polyphenols and saponins, which exhibit antioxidant, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory and other biological activities. Thus, these compounds could be an alternative treatment for inflammatory diseases, in particular, chronic inflammation such as arthritis, obesity and cancer. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in alternative therapies derived from natural products; accordingly, the present review has compiled the bioactive compounds found in legumes that have demonstrated an anti-inflammatory effect in non-clinical studies.

Abstract
Adzuki bean is well known as a potential functional food that improves metabolic complications from obesity and diabetes. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) has been implicated to have an important role in obesity and diabetes. However, the protective roles of adzuki bean MY59 extract (ABE) on insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis are not fully understood. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ABE on LCN2 expression in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. ABE reduced HFD-induced fat mass and improved insulin resistance. In addition to hepatic steatosis, HFD-fed mice showed many apoptotic cells and neutrophils in the epididymal fat pads. However, these findings were significantly reduced by ABE supplementation. In particular, we found that increased LCN2 proteins from serum, epididymal fat pads, and liver in HFD-fed mice are significantly reduced by ABE. Furthermore, ABE reduced increased heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase-1 expressions in adipose tissue and liver in HFD-fed mice. We found that hepatic nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 expression in HFD-fed mice was also reduced by ABE. Thus, these findings indicate that ABE feeding could improve insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis by decreasing LCN2-mediated inflammation and oxidative stress in HFD-fed mice.

Abstract
Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), also called red bean, is a legume of Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family. This crop is native to East Asia and is also commercially available in other parts of the world. It is becoming a research focus owing to its distinct nutritional properties (e.g., abundant in polyphenols). The diverse health benefits and multiple utilization of this pulse are associated with its unique composition. However, there is a paucity of reviews focusing on the nutritional properties and potent applications of adzuki beans. This review summarizes the chemical compositions, physicochemical properties, health benefits, processing, and applications of adzuki beans. Suggestions on how to better utilize the adzuki bean are also provided to facilitate its development as a functional grain. Adzuki bean and its components can be further developed into value-added and nutritionally enhanced products.

Abstract
The aim of the present research was to investigate the antioxidant properties and anthocyanin profiles in the black seed coated adzuki bean (Vigna angularis, Geomguseul cultivar). The acidic 60% methanol extract (40 μg/mL) contains the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents (486 ± 3 mg GAE/100 g; 314 ± 10 mg CE/100 g) with potent antioxidant properties (trolox equivalent 1272 ± 26 and 662 ± 24 mg TE/100 g) against ABTS and DPPH radicals compared to other methanol-water ratios (20, 40, 80, and 100%). Ten anthocyanin components were identified in this extract including delphinidin-3,5-O-digalactoside (1), delphinidin-3,5-O-diglucoside (2), delphinidin-3-O-galactoside (3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside (4), delphinidin-3-O-rutinoside (5), delphinidin-3-O-(p-coumaroyl)glucoside (6), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (7), petunidin-3-O-galactoside (8), petunidin-3-O-glucoside (9) and petunidin-3-O-(p-coumaroyl)glucoside (10) via NMR spectroscopy and UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS analysis. The key anthocyanins 3 and 4 of delphinidin type were isolated by reversed phase C-18 MPLC. Our results indicate that the anthocyanin profiles as well as the high phenolic and flavonoid contents are important factors determining the antioxidant effects of black adzuki bean.

Abstract
The medicinal plant Tirpitzia sinensis has been used by the Zhuang ethnic people in mountainous areas of Southwest China to stop bleeding, invigorate blood circulation, and treat inflammation and wounds. In order to further explore its traditional medicinal uses, the phytochemical constituents of this species were examined. Three new compounds, the lignan tirpitzin (1), the flavonoid tirpitzoside (2), and the furan-glycoside tirpitziol (3), along with five known compounds were isolated from the aerial part of T. sinensis for the first time. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, LC/MS, IR spectrometric methods and compared with published data. The results of an in silico pharmacophore-based analysis showed potential targets of the new compounds, including ERBB2, IRAK4, LCK, JAK2, MAPK14, and MMP-12. These targets suggested that 1-3 may be involved with wound-healing and/or inflammation, leading to an in vitro assay of nitric oxide (NO) inhibition assays with lipopolysaccharide-induced BV-2 cells. All three new compounds displayed moderate NO inhibitory activity with the IC50 values of 14.97 ± 0.87, 26.63 ± 1.32, and 17.09 ± 2.3 μM, respectively.

Abstract
Phytochemical study on the roots and rhizomes of Notopterygium incisum resulted in the isolation of six new coumarins, notoptetherins A - F (1-6), and 20 known analogues (7-26). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive analyses of NMR and HRMS data, and the absolute configurations of 5 and 6 were established by Mo2(AcO)4-induced CD and exciton chirality, respectively. Moreover, a biomimetic synthesis of 6 from 21 was employed to confirm its absolute configuration. In a subsequent activity screening, compounds 12 and 17 exhibited potent inhibition against LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 values of 12.7 and 10.2 μM, respectively.

Abstract
Eight azukisapogenol triterpene glycosides, including five new compounds, oxychiliotriterpenosides A–E (1–5), two new methyl glucuronide derivatives that proved to be artifacts, oxychiliotriterpenoside E-glucuronic acid methyl ester (6) and myrioside B-glucuronic acid methyl ester (7), and a known one, myrioside B (8), was isolated from the aerial part of Oxytropis chiliophylla Royle. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods. Triterpene glycosides were first obtained from O. chiliophylla, and those containing a galactose unit (1, 2, 5 and 6) and diglucosidic or triglucosidic linkage at C-29 (1–4), were reported from Oxytropis species for the first time, which might be recognized as a chemotaxonomic feature of O. chiliophylla. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities against NO production using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells, but no compounds showed potent inhibition on NO production.

Abstract
Inflammation is the first biological response of the immune system to infection, injury or irritation. Evidence suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is mediated through the regulation of various inflammatory cytokines, such as nitric oxide, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor alpha-α, interferon gamma-γ as well as noncytokine mediator, prostaglandin E2. Fruits, vegetables, and food legumes contain high levels of phytochemicals that show anti-inflammatory effect, but their mechanisms of actions have not been completely identified. The aim of this paper was to summarize the recent investigations and findings regarding in vitro and animal model studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of fruits, vegetables, and food legumes. Specific cytokines released for specific type of physiological event might shed some light on the specific use of each source of phytochemicals that can benefit to counter the inflammatory response. As natural modulators of proinflammatory gene expressions, phytochemical from fruits, vegetables, and food legumes could be incorporated into novel bioactive anti-inflammatory formulations of various nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Finally, these phytochemicals are discussed as the natural promotion strategy for the improvement of human health status. The phenolics and triterpenoids in fruits and vegetables showed higher anti-inflammatory activity than other compounds. In food legumes, lectins and peptides had anti-inflammatory activity in most cases. However, there are lack of human study data on the anti-inflammatory activity of phytochemicals from fruits, vegetables, and food legumes.

Abstract
Several theories emphasize that aging is closely related to oxidative stress and disease. The formation of excess ROS can lead to DNA damage and the acceleration of aging. Vigna angularis is one of the important medicinal plants in Korea. We isolated vitexin from V. angularis and elucidated the lifespan-extending effect of vitexin using the Caenorhabditis elegans model system. Vitexin showed potent lifespan extensive activity and it elevated the survival rates of nematodes against the stressful environments including heat and oxidative conditions. In addition, our results showed that vitexin was able to elevate antioxidant enzyme activities of worms and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. These studies demonstrated that the increased stress tolerance of vitexin-mediated nematode could be attributed to increased expressions of stress resistance proteins such as superoxide dismutase (SOD-3) and heat shock protein (HSP-16.2). In this work, we also studied whether vitexin-mediated longevity activity was associated with aging-related factors such as progeny, food intake, growth and movement. The data revealed that these factors were not affected by vitexin treatment except movement. Vitexin treatment improved the body movement of aged nematode, suggesting vitexin affects healthspan as well as lifespan of nematode. These results suggest that vitexin might be a probable candidate which could extend the human lifespan.

Abstract
Though dietary azuki bean (Vigna angularis) seed containing antioxidant proanthocyanidins was known to have multibiological activities including antioxidant, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities, the antiangiogenic activity of ethanol extract of Vigna angularis (EVA) was never reported so far. In the present study, the antiangiogenic mechanism of EVA was examined in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). EVA showed weak cytotoxicity in HUVECs, while it significantly suppressed the VEGF induced proliferation of HUVECs. Consistently, wound healing assay revealed that EVA inhibited the VEGF induced migration of HUVECs. Also, EVA abrogated the VEGF induced tube formation of HUVECs in a concentration dependent fashion. Furthermore, Matrigel plug assay showed that EVA significantly reduced the hemoglobin level of Matrigel plug in mice compared to untreated control. Of note, EVA effectively attenuated the phosphorylation of VEGFR2, Erk, and Akt in VEGF-treated HUVECs. Overall, our findings suggest that EVA inhibits angiogenesis in VEGF-treated HUVECs via inhibition of phosphorylation of VEGFR2, ERK, and Akt.

Abstract
Three new flavonoid glycosides, (3R)-(+)-isomucronulatol-2'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), (3R)-(-)-isomucronulatol-7-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), and (2S)-(-)-7,8-dihydroxylflavanone-4'-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), along with eight flavanones (4, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 21, and 24), four isoflavones (5, 11, 13, and 23), four chalcones (6, 14, 17, and 18), two isoflavans (19-20), one flavone (7), one flavonol (9), and one dihydrochalcone (22) were isolated from Baoyuan Decoction (BYD), a traditional Chinese medicine formula. The structures of the new compounds were established by detailed analysis of NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic data, and their absolute configurations were determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. The inhibitory effects of the isolates were evaluated on nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide activated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Compounds 6, 9, and 10 showed the significant inhibitory activities, with IC50 values of 1.4, 13.8, and 9.3 μM, respectively, comparable to or even better than the positive control, quercetin (IC50, 16.5 μM). The assignment of these isolated flavonoids was achieved using UPLC-Q-trap-MS, and the results suggested that they were originated from Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis.
