Abstract
The olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae Rossi) is the most dangerous pest of olive fruits and negatively influences the chemical and sensory quality of the oil produced. Organic farms have few tools against this pest and are constantly looking for effective and sustainable products such as geomaterials, i.e., zeolite. Since a particle film covers the canopy, a study was carried out on the olive tree's responses to zeolite foliar coating. The tested treatments were natural zeolite (NZ), zeolite enriched with ammonium (EZ), and Spintor-Fly® (SF). EZ was associated with higher photosynthetic activity with respect to the other treatments, while no differences were found between SF and NZ. Foliar treatments affect the amount of BVOC produced in both leaves and olives, where 26 and 23 different BVOCs (biogenic volatile organic compounds) were identified but not the type of compounds emitted. Foliar treatment with EZ significantly affected fruit size, and the olive fruit fly more frequently attacked the olives, while treatment with NZ had olives with similar size and attack as those treated with Spintor-Fly®; no difference in oil quantity was detected. Oil produced from olives treated with NZ presented higher values of phenolic content and intensities of bitterness and spiciness than oils from those treated with EZ and SF. According to the results of this study, using zeolite films on an olive tree canopy does not negatively influence plant physiology; it has an impact on BVOC emission and the chemical and sensory characteristics of the oil.

Abstract
Oregano is often adulterated for economic reasons. This fraud mainly consists of adding other species with lower commercial value, such as olive leaves. To ensure the authenticity of oregano, an analytical method based on the analysis of the volatile organic compound (VOC) profile obtained by headspace gas chromatography coupled to ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) was developed and validated. Samples of ecological Mediterranean oregano adulterated with different percentages of two types of olive leaves (cornicabra and manzanilla) were studied using a non-targeted analysis. Moreover, a total of 30 VOCs were identified in the analyzed samples, and 24 compounds could be quantified using calibration curves based on Boltzmann's equation. A chemometric model based on orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was used to detect the adulterated oregano samples, obtaining a 100% validation success rate, and partial least squares (PLS) analysis was used to quantify the percentage of adulterant. Finally, the proposed methodology was applied to 15 commercial oregano samples, resulting in two of them being classified as adulterated with 31 and 43% of olive leaves, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, antioxidative methanolic leaf extract (MeOH-SIS) of Urtica dioica was characterized for anti-diabetic activity. The extract was purified on a column to yield seven homogenous fractions (F1-F7) which were further determined for DPPH radical scavenging activity. MeOH-SIS and the fraction F1 (selected based on % yield and activity) were evaluated for their in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The results showed inhibition of both enzymes in a dose dependent manner and F1 exhibited relatively higher inhibition than its mother extract MeOH-SIS. GC-MS analyses of both the extracts identified 24 major compounds among which 10 were previously described as bioactive compounds. Among all, 5 compounds demonstrated to have quality pharmacokinetics profiles and were examined for possible binding affinity against the active sites of α-amylase and α-glucosidase using molecular docking. The binding interaction of 2R-acetoxymethyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-4 T-(3-methyl-2-buten-1-yl)-1 T-cyclohexanol within the active sites of the target receptors was found to be significant among others, and can be developed as a potential inhibitor of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. The leaf extract can be utilized to develop food additive for the control and management of oxidative stress induced diabetes.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the release rate, duration, and biological efficiency of yeast volatile compounds associated with olive fruit flies in slow-release dispensers, polypropylene vials, and rubber septa attached to yellow sticky traps under different environmental conditions in order to protect the environment, humans, and nontarget organisms. Isoamyl alcohol, 2-octanone, and 2-phenethyl acetate were placed in dispensers and tested over a four-week experiment. The weight loss of the volatile compounds in both dispensers was measured, and a rapid, inexpensive, and simple HS-GC/FID method was developed to determine the residual amount of volatiles in the septa. 2-Phenethyl acetate stood out in the rubber septa and showed a statistically significant difference in the release ratio compared to the other volatiles under all conditions tested. Our results showed that the attraction of olive fruit flies increased with decreasing concentrations of the tested volatiles. Regarding the number of flies attracted by rubber septa containing 2-phenethyl acetate, significantly better results were obtained than for septa containing isoamyl alcohol and 2-octanone, in contrast to the attraction of olive fruit flies to polypropylene vials containing these compounds but without significant difference. Since the presence of all tested chemicals was detected during the experiment, this opens the possibility of using more environmentally friendly and cost-effective dispensers with a significantly lower amount of semiochemicals.

Abstract
In this study, we present the first characterization of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) released from infested olive leaves. The gall midge Dasineura oleae is a specific pest of Olea europaea and endemic of the Mediterranean Basin, an area in which severe outbreaks currently occurred. Little is known about the damage caused by the pest and the relationship with its host. Since gall formation and larval feeding activity may lead to the release of specific plant volatile compounds, we investigated the volatile profiles emitted from infested plants compared with healthy plants under both laboratory and field conditions. Additionally, the volatiles emitted from mechanically damaged plants were considered. A blend of 12 volatiles was emitted from olive trees infested by D. oleae. Of these, β-copaene, β-ocimene, cosmene, unknown 1 and unknown 3 were found to be exclusively emitted in infested plants. The emission of germacrene-D, (E,E)-α-farnesene, and (Z,E)-α-farnesene, α-copaene, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, (E)-β-guaiene and heptadecane significantly increased in infested trees. Linalool, β-copaen-4-α-ol, β-bourbonene, β-cubebene, β-elemene, β-copaene and δ-amorphene were found only in the field trial and showed differences depending on the level of infestation and the plant stage. (Z)-3-Hexenol, (E)-4-oxohen-2-enal, and 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)-ethanol, were exclusively emitted from the leaves after mechanical damage. In a field trial in Italy, we also demonstrated spring synchronization between adults of D. oleae and O. europaea trees. Analyses of morphoanatomical malformations of gall leaves showed that tissue alterations occur at the spongy parenchyma causing an increase of the leaf blade thickness. We speculate that tissue alterations may lead to HIPV release, in turn potentially attracting D. oleae natural enemies.

Abstract
Bactrocera oleae, the olive fruit fly, is one of the most important pests affecting the olive fruit, causing serious quantitative and qualitative damage to olive oil production. In this study, the changes induced by B. oleae infestation in the biosynthesis of volatile and phenolic compounds in olive (cvs. Picual, Manzanilla, and Hojiblanca) have been analyzed. Despite cultivar differences, the oils obtained from infested fruits showed a significant increase in the content of certain volatile compounds such as (E)-hex-2-enal, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and β-ocimene and a drastic decrease of the phenolic contents. The impact of those changes on the inferred quality of the oils has been studied. In parallel, the changes induced by the attack of the olive fly on the expression of some key genes in the biosynthesis of volatile and phenolic compounds, such as lipoxygenase, β-glucosidase, and polyphenol oxidase, have been analyzed. The strong induction of a new olive polyphenol oxidase gene (OePPO2) explains the reduction of phenolic content in the oils obtained from infested fruits and suggest the existence of a PPO-mediated oxidative defense system in olives.

Abstract
Background and aim In vitro activity evaluation of Egyptian Olea europaea leaves extracts, and in vivo healing activity assessment of the newly prepared ointment of Olea europaea leaves extracts mingled with Shea butter. Experimental procedure Different extraction methods and solvents were used to extract Egyptian Olea europaea bioactive agent(s). Antibacterial, scavenging activity and in-vivo evaluation of wound repair potentiality of Olea europaea extract were examined in normal and diabetic experimental rat models with induced circular excisions. Results and conclusion Olive leaves extract of Tanta was selected as the most active agent against Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), with MIC value 15.6 μg/ml. Moreover, checkerboard dilution technique approved that the interaction between Tanta LEM crude extract and Ciprofloxacin was synergistic. Scavenging activity of the extract against DPPH free radicals was 87.55% at concentration of 50 μg/ml. In vivo normal and diabetic experimental rats treated with Shea butter: Tanta LEM extract (1:3 w/v) showed the maximum wound contraction and healing activity. This is the first work to assess Egyptian olive leaves extract as an effective treatment against MRSA. The novel combination between shea butter and Tanta LEM showed promising wound healing activity in normal and diabetic rats. The combination between Tanta LEM extract and Ciprofloxacin was found to be synergistic.

Abstract
The spittlebugs Philaenus spumarius and Neophilaenus campestris (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) are xylem-feeder insects that have been identified as vectors of Xylella fastidiosa in Europe. In the present study, we aim to identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may act as semiochemicals for these species. Using the dynamic headspace technique, we collected VOCs from Olea europaea L. and Polygala myrtifolia L., highly susceptible plant species to X. fastidiosa, Pinus halepensis Mill., a common plant where N. campestris is found during summer, and from host plant species that are used as cover crops or exist as natural vegetation in olive orchards, such as Cistus creticus L., Medicago sativa L., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh., Apium graveolens L. and Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Fuss. We tested the response of female antennae on those blends with Gas Chromatography-Electroantennographic Detection (GC-EAD). The chemical profile of C. creticus and P. halepensis was rich in terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, and esters. In the O. europaea profile, the main compounds were terpenes. As for P. myrtifolia, the volatile profile consisted mostly of alkanes and their substitutes. In the volatile profile of M. sativa, C. dactylon and L. arundinaceum, common volatile compounds were detected. Petroselinum crispum and Apium graveolens chemical profiles were dominated by terpenes. Several compounds elicited a consistent response to the female antennae of both species. In total, 65 compounds elicited consistent EAD responses for P. spumarius and 16 compounds for N. campestris. α-pinene was found in all tested plants and elicited consistent EAD responses of P. spumarius in five plants. In addition, antennae of P. spumarius females responded to camphor, limonene, 4-methyl octane and sabinene. These compounds were found in the volatile profile of at least 5 out of 8 examined plant species. Behavioral bioassays using Y-tube olfactometry were performed on volatiles that elicited antennal responses during electrophysiological studies. Among the compounds tested in behavioral studies, namely (-)-α-pinene, (+)-α-pinene, sabinene, (-)-S-limonene and (1R)-(+)-camphor, only the last one elicited a significant attraction response by P. spumarius females. The results achieved shed light on the VOCs from selected host plant species of X. fastidiosa that are perceived by two important insect vectors and a non-host plant, P. crispum. The identification of semiochemicals for manipulating spittlebugs' behavior contribute to the development of efficient monitoring tools for X. fastidiosa vectors.

Abstract
Plants emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that induce metabolomic, transcriptomic, and behavioral reactions in receiver organisms, including insect pollinators and herbivores. VOCs’ composition and concentration may influence plant-insect or plant-plant interactions and affect soil microbes that may interfere in plant-plant communication. Many Trichoderma fungi act as biocontrol agents of phytopathogens and plant growth promoters. Moreover, they can stimulate plant defense mechanisms against insect pests. This study evaluated VOCs’ emission by olive trees (Olea europaea L.) when selected Trichoderma fungi or metabolites were used as soil treatments. Trichoderma harzianum strains M10, T22, and TH1, T. asperellum strain KV906, T. virens strain GV41, and their secondary metabolites harzianic acid (HA), and 6-pentyl-α-pyrone (6PP) were applied to olive trees. Charcoal cartridges were employed to adsorb olive VOCs, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis allowed their identification and quantification. A total of 45 volatile compounds were detected, and among these, twenty-five represented environmental pollutants and nineteen compounds were related to olive plant emission. Trichoderma strains and metabolites differentially enhanced VOCs production, affecting three biosynthetic pathways: methylerythritol 1-phosphate (MEP), lipid-signaling, and shikimate pathways. Multivariate analysis models showed a characteristic fingerprint of each plant-fungus/metabolite relationship, reflecting a different emission of VOCs by the treated plants. Specifically, strain M10 and the metabolites 6PP and HA enhanced the monoterpene syntheses by controlling the MEP pathway. Strains GV41, KV906, and the metabolite HA stimulated the hydrocarbon aldehyde formation (nonanal) by regulating the lipid-signaling pathway. Finally, Trichoderma strains GV41, M10, T22, TH1, and the metabolites HA and 6PP improve aromatic syntheses at different steps of the shikimate pathway.

Abstract
The pyrolysis of organic feedstock yields the solid fraction biochar, bio-oils, and a volatile fraction that can be reused for energetic purposes or technological applications in agro-ecosystems in the form of smoke-water (SW). In this study, 10 SW types were created from five organic feedstocks (i.e. cellulose, wood sawdust, olive mill residues, maize, and alfalfa litter) at two pyrolysis temperatures (i.e. 300 and 500 °C). We characterized SW using liquid chromatography (LC)-electrospray ionization-time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) combined with a multi-species bioassay including five crop plants, four fungi, one root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), and the olive fly pest (Bactrocera oleae). All SW types were acidic, exhibiting a pH range of 1.9-4.6. LC-MS analysis revealed differences in the chemical profiles of SW types in relation to the organic feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature. All SW types exerted concentration-dependent effects on crops, with evident phytotoxic activity at high concentrations. Conversely, they exerted stimulatory effects when diluted with water at ratios ranging from 1:100 to 1:1000. Moreover, all SW types displayed slight or null fungitoxic activity. On the contrary, SW strongly inhibited egg hatching by M. incognita after 72 and 144 h of incubation. The strongest inhibition was found for olive mill SW, and the weakest effect was noted for alfalfa SW. Finally, the application of SW over fresh olives reversed the attraction of B. oleae adults, demonstrating a strong repellent effect toward this pest. Nevertheless, only olive mill SW consistently attracted B. oleae. In conclusion, biochar SW exhibited notable biological activities and potential applications for plant growth promotion, if opportunely diluted, and for the control of root-knot nematodes and olive fruit flies.

Abstract
cis-3-Hexen-1-ol has been regarded as the main source of green aroma (or green odor) in green tea. However, no clear findings on the composition of green aroma components in tea and the effect of cis-3-hexen-1-ol on other aroma components have been reported. In this study, the main green aroma components in green tea were characterized, especially the role of cis-3-hexen-1-ol in green aroma was analyzed and how it affected other aroma components in green tea was studied. Based on the GC–MS detection, odor activity value evaluation, and monomer sniffing, 12 green components were identified. Through the chemometric analysis, cis-3-hexen-1-ol was proven as the most influential component of green aroma. Moreover, through the electronic nose analysis of different concentrations of cis-3-hexen-1-ol with 25 other aroma components in green tea, we showed that the effect of cis-3-hexen-1-ol plays a profound effect on the overall aroma based on the experiments of reconstitution solution and natural tea samples. GC–MS and CG-FID confirmed that the concentration range of the differential threshold of green odor and green aroma of cis-3-hexen-1-ol was 0.04–0.52 mg kg−1.

Abstract
Variation on bacterial communities living in the phyllosphere as epiphytes and endophytes has been attributed to plant host effects. However, there is contradictory or inconclusive evidence regarding the effect of plant genetics (below the species' level) and of plant tissue type on phyllosphere bacterial community assembly, in particular when epiphytes and endophytes are considered simultaneously. Here, both surface and internal bacterial communities of two olive (Olea europaea) cultivars were evaluated in twigs and leaves by molecular identification of cultivable isolates, with an attempt to answer these questions. Overall, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla, being epiphytes more diverse and abundant than endophytes. Host genotype (at cultivar level) had a structuring effect on the composition of bacterial communities and, in a similar way, for both epiphytes and endophytes. Plant organ (leaf vs. twig) control of the bacterial communities was less evident when compared with plant genotype and with a greater influence on epiphytic than on endophytic community structure. Each olive genotype/plant organ was apparently selective towards specific bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs), which may lead to specific feedbacks on fitness of plant genotypes. Bacterial recruitment was observed to happen mainly within epiphytes than in endophytes and in leaves as compared with twigs. Such host specificity suggested that the benefits derived from the plant-bacteria interaction should be considered at genetic levels below the species.

Abstract
Microbial associations are widespread across the insects. In the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae), vertically transmitted gut symbionts contribute to larval development inside the olive host, and to adult nutrition. Nevertheless, their effect on behavioural decisions of adults is unknown. In this study, we show that symbiotic bacteria affect oviposition behaviour in B. oleae. We studied the effect of different fruits as hosts and different gut-bacteria as gut-symbionts on oviposition attempts and fly development in B. oleae. Untreated flies that had native gut-symbionts attempted oviposition significantly more times than axenic flies as well as flies treated with medfly-associated Pantoea or Klebsiella bacteria. Axenic flies provided with a diet containing the homogenized gut of symbiotic flies recovered the same number of oviposition attempts as their symbiotic counterparts. As for as the different hosts, green olives (unripe) and grapes were preferred while black olives (ripe) elicited the least number of oviposition attempts, with an interactive effect of host and bacterial treatments. It appears that both the host attributes and the native gut-symbionts drive oviposition preference towards green olives in B. oleae. Moreover, both bacterial treatments and hosts significantly affected the development of B. oleae larvae. Though grapes elicited as many oviposition attempts as green olives, they yielded no pupae. Taken together, our results suggest that the intimate association between B. oleae and their gut-microbes, extends beyond nutritional support to behaviour.

Abstract
Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation plays an important role in plant photomorphogenesis. Whilst the morpho-functional disorders induced by excessive UV irradiation are well-known, it remains unclear how this irradiation modulates the metabolome, and which metabolic shifts improve plants' tolerance to UV-B. In this study, we use an important Mediterranean crop, Olea europaea, to decipher the impacts of enhanced UV-B radiation on the physiological performance and lipophilic metabolite profile. Young olive plants (cv. 'Galega Vulgar') were exposed for five days to UV-B biologically effective doses of 6.5 kJ m-2 d-1 and 12.4 kJ m-2 d-1. Cell cycle/ploidy, photosynthesis and oxidative stress, as well as GC-MS metabolites were assessed. Both UV-B treatments impaired net CO2 assimilation rate, transpiration rate, photosynthetic pigments, and RuBisCO activity, but 12.4 kJ m-2 d-1 also decreased the photochemical quenching (qP) and the effective efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII). UV-B treatments promoted mono/triperpene pathways, while only 12.4 kJ m-2 d-1 increased fatty acids and alkanes, and decreased geranylgeranyl-diphosphate. The interplay between physiology and metabolomics suggests some innate ability of these plants to tolerate moderate UV-B doses (6.5 kJ m-2 d-1). Also their tolerance to higher doses (12.4 kJ m-2 d-1) relies on plants' metabolic adjustments, where the accumulation of specific compounds such as long-chain alkanes, palmitic acid, oleic acid and particularly oleamide (which is described for the first time in olive leaves) play an important protective role. This is the first study demonstrating photosynthetic changes and lipophilic metabolite adjustments in olive leaves under moderate and high UV-B doses.

Abstract
The olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the most devastating pest of cultivated olive (Olea europaea L.). Intraspecific variation in plant resistance to B. oleae has been described only at phenotypic level. In this work, we used a transcriptomic approach to study the molecular response to the olive fruit fly in two olive cultivars with contrasting level of susceptibility. Using next-generation pyrosequencing, we first generated a catalogue of more than 80,000 sequences expressed in drupes from approximately 700k reads. The assembled sequences were used to develop a microarray layout with over 60,000 olive-specific probes. The differential gene expression analysis between infested (i.e. with II or III instar larvae) and control drupes indicated a significant intraspecific variation between the more tolerant and susceptible cultivar. Around 2500 genes were differentially regulated in infested drupes of the tolerant variety. The GO annotation of the differentially expressed genes implies that the inducible resistance to the olive fruit fly involves a number of biological functions, cellular processes and metabolic pathways, including those with a known role in defence, oxidative stress responses, cellular structure, hormone signalling, and primary and secondary metabolism. The difference in the induced transcriptional changes between the cultivars suggests a strong genetic role in the olive inducible defence, which can ultimately lead to the discovery of factors associated with a higher level of tolerance to B. oleae.
