Recent advances in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of exotic nuclei

Precise Distance Control and Functionality Adjustment of Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Metal-Organic Frameworks

We report the construction of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) in a metal-organic framework (MOF), where both Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) are fixed to the backbone. The anchoring of a tritopic organoboron linker as LA and a monotopic linker as LB to separate metal oxide clusters in a tetrahedron geometry allows for the precise control of distance between them. As the type of monotopic LB linker varies, pyridine, phenol, aniline, and benzyl alcohol, a series of 11 FLPs were constructed to give fixed distances of 7.1, 5.5, 5.4, and 4.8 Å, respectively, revealed by 11B-1H solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Keeping LA and LB apart by a fixed distance makes it possible to investigate the electrostatic effect by changing the functional groups in the monotopic LB linker, while the LA counterpart remains unaffected. This approach offers new chemical environments of the active site for FLP-induced catalysis.

43Ca MAS-DNP NMR of Frozen Solutions for the Investigation of Calcium Ion Complexation

Calcium ion complexation in aqueous solutions is of paramount importance in biology as it is related to cell signaling, muscle contraction, or biomineralization. However, Ca2+-complexes are dynamic soluble entities challenging to describe at the molecular level. Nuclear magnetic resonance appears as a method of choice to probe Ca2+-complexes. However, 43Ca NMR exhibits severe limitations arising from the low natural abundance coupled to the low gyromagnetic ratio and the quadrupolar nature of 43Ca, which overall make it a very unreceptive nucleus. Here, we show that 43Ca dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR of 43Ca-labeled frozen solutions is an efficient approach to enhance the NMR receptivity of 43Ca and to obtain structural insights about calcium ions complexed with representative ligands including water molecules, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and l-aspartic acid (l-Asp). In these conditions and in combination with numerical simulations and calculations, we show that 43Ca nuclei belonging to Ca2+ complexed to the investigated ligands exhibit rather low quadrupolar couplings (with CQ typically ranging from 0.6 to 1 MHz) due to high symmetrical environments and potential residual dynamics in vitrified solutions at a temperature of 100 K. As a consequence, when 1H→43Ca cross-polarization (CP) is used to observe 43Ca central transition, "high-power" νRF(43Ca) conditions, typically used to detect spin 1/2 nuclei, provide ∼120 times larger sensitivity than "low-power" conditions usually employed for detection of quadrupolar nuclei. These "high-power" CPMAS conditions allow two-dimensional (2D) 1H-43Ca HetCor spectra to be readily recorded, highlighting various Ca2+-ligand interactions in solution. This significant increase in 43Ca NMR sensitivity results from the combination of distinct advantages: (i) an efficient 1H-mediated polarization transfer from DNP, resembling the case of low-natural-abundance spin 1/2 nuclei, (ii) a reduced dynamics, allowing the use of CP as a sensitivity enhancement technique, and (iii) the presence of a relatively highly symmetrical Ca environment, which, combined to residual dynamics, leads to the averaging of the quadrupolar interaction and hence to efficient high-power CP conditions. Interestingly, these results indicate that the use of high-power CP conditions is an effective way of selecting symmetrical and/or dynamic 43Ca environments of calcium-containing frozen solution, capable of filtering out more rigid and/or anisotropic 43Ca sites characterized by larger quadrupolar constants. This approach could open the way to the atomic-level investigation of calcium environments in more complex, heterogeneous frozen solutions, such as those encountered at the early stages of calcium phosphate or calcium carbonate biomineralization events.

A facile approach for estimating radio-frequency field strength of low-receptivity nuclei

Radio-frequency (RF) field calibration is essential in NMR spectroscopy. A common practice is to collect a nutation curve by varying the pulse length in a direct single-pulse excitation experiment or in a cross-polarization magic-angle spinning with a flip-back pulse experiment. From the null points on this curve, one can calculate the RF field strength. Nevertheless, the practical implementation is not always straightforward or can even be unrealizable, especially for low-receptivity nuclei owing to their associated low sensitivity. Several researchers used an approach that involves utilizing other nuclei with more sensitivity but nearly identical Larmor frequencies to that of the nucleus of interest. However, such an approach has not been a common practice so far. In this work, we have systematically revisited this approach using 3.2 mm rotors on different sets of nuclei covering a Larmor frequency range up to 80 MHz. The effect of solid- and solution-states on RF field strength measurements has been investigated. The detection of each set of nuclei is then carried out with a resonant circuit in the NMR probe consisting of identical coils and capacitors. Our methodology is illustrated by recording 135/137Ba NMR spectra of BaTiO3 without prior 135/137Ba RF field calibration.

Overcoming challenges in 67Zn NMR: a new strategy of signal enhancement for MOF characterization

67 Zn solid-state NMR suffers from low sensitivity, limiting its ability to probe the Zn2+ surroundings in MOFs. We report a breakthrough in overcoming challenges in 67Zn NMR. Combining new cryogenic MAS probe technology and performing NMR experiments at a high magnetic field results in remarkable signal enhancement, yielding enhanced information for MOF characterization.

Triangulating Dopant-Level Mn(II) Insertion in a Cs2NaBiCl6 Double Perovskite Using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Lead-free metal halide double perovskites are gaining increasing attention for optoelectronic applications. Specifically, doping metal halide double perovskites using transition metals enables broadband tailorability of the optical bandgap for these emerging semiconducting materials. One candidate material is Mn(II)-doped Cs₂NaBiCl₆, but the nature of Mn(II) insertion on chemical structure is poorly understood due to low Mn loading. It is critical to determine the atomic-level structure at the site of Mn(II) incorporation in doped perovskites to better understand the structure-property relationships in these materials and thus to advance their applicability to optoelectronic applications. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is uniquely qualified to address this, and thus a comprehensive three-pronged strategy, involving solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-field dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, is used to identify the location of Mn(II) insertion in Cs₂NaBiCl₆. Multinuclear (²³Na, ³⁵Cl, ¹³³Cs, and ²⁰⁹Bi) one-dimensional (1D) magnetic resonance spectra reveal a low level of Mn(II) incorporation, with select spins affected by paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE) induced by Mn(II) neighbors. EPR measurements confirm the oxidation state, octahedral symmetry, and low doping levels of the Mn(II) centers. Complementary EPR and NMR measurements confirm that the cubic structure is maintained with Mn(II) incorporation at room temperature, but the structure deviates slightly from cubic symmetry at low temperatures (<30 K). HYperfine Sublevel CORrelation (HYSCORE) EPR spectroscopy explores the electron-nuclear correlations of Mn(II) with ²³Na, ¹³³Cs, and ³⁵Cl. The absence of ²⁰⁹Bi correlations suggests that Bi centers are replaced by Mn(II). Endogenous DNP NMR measurements from Mn(II) → ¹³³Cs (<30 K) reveal that the solid effect is the dominant mechanism for DNP transfer and supports that Mn(II) is homogeneously distributed within the double-perovskite structure.

Recent progress in solid-state NMR of spin-½ low-γ nuclei applied to inorganic materials

Significant technological and methodological advances in solid-state NMR techniques in recent years have increased the accessibility of nuclei with small magnetic moments (hereafter termed low-γ) underpinning an increased range of applications of such nuclei. These methodological advances are briefly summarised, including improvements in hardware and pulse sequences, as well as important developments in associated computational methods (e.g. first principles calculations, spectral simulation). Here spin-½ nuclei are the focus, with this Perspective complementing a very recent review that looked at half-integer spin low-γ quadrupolar nuclei. Reference is made to some of the original reports of such spin-½ nuclei, but recent progress in the relevant methodology and applications to inorganic materials (most within the last 10 years) of these nuclei are the focus. An overview of the current state-of-the-art of studying these nuclei is thereby provided for both NMR spectroscopists and materials researchers.

From Operando Raman Mechanochemistry to "NMR Crystallography": Understanding the Structures and Interconversion of Zn-Terephthalate Networks Using Selective 17O-Labeling

The description of the formation, structure, and reactivity of coordination networks and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remains a real challenge in a number of cases. This is notably true for compounds composed of Zn²⁺ ions and terephthalate ligands (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, BDC) because of the difficulties in isolating them as pure phases and/or because of the presence of structural defects. Here, using mechanochemistry in combination with operando Raman spectroscopy, the observation of the formation of various zinc terephthalate compounds was rendered possible, allowing the distinction and isolation of three intermediates during the ball-milling synthesis of Zn₃(OH)₄(BDC). An "NMR crystallography" approach was then used, combining solid-state NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ¹⁷O) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to refine the poorly described crystallographic structures of these phases. Particularly noteworthy are the high-resolution ¹⁷O NMR analyses, which were made possible in a highly efficient and cost-effective way, thanks to the selective ¹⁷O-enrichment of either hydroxyl or terephthalate groups by ball-milling. This allowed the presence of defect sites to be identified for the first time in one of the phases, and the nature of the H-bonding network of the hydroxyls to be established in another. Lastly, the possibility of using deuterated precursors (e.g., D₂O and d ₄-BDC) during ball-milling is also introduced as a means for observing specific transformations during operando Raman spectroscopy studies, which would not have been possible with hydrogenated equivalents. Overall, the synthetic and spectroscopic approaches developed herein are expected to push forward the understanding of the structure and reactivity of other complex coordination networks and MOFs.

Quantifying the quadrupolar interaction by 45Sc-NMR spectroscopy of single crystals

Single crystals of the compound [ [Formula: see text] ]Cl₄ ⋅ 2H₂O were studied by ⁴⁵Sc-NMR, with the effect of the quadrupolar coupling interaction on the spectra of the spin-7/2 nucleus analysed in the hierarchical framework of perturbation theory. Orientation-dependent spectra acquired at B₀ = 17.6 T showed strong second-order effects due to the comparatively large coupling constant of χ = |14.613 ± 0.006| MHz, with an associated asymmetry parameter of η_Q = 0.540 9 ± 0.000 4. By analysing the splittings of the ±3/2 satellites, which in good approximation are subjected to first-order effects only, the full quadrupolar coupling tensor could be determined. The second-order effects caused by this tensor were calculated according to theoretical predictions for all orientations, and subtracted from both the centres of gravity of the satellites, and the central transitions. This allowed extraction of the full chemical shift tensor, with the eigenvalues being δ₁₁ = (5.6 ± 0.9) ppm, δ₂₂ = (12.4 ± 0.9) ppm, and δ₃₃ = (38.5 ± 0.9) ppm. In spectra acquired at a lower magnetic field of B₀ = 9.4 T, third-order effects could be detected, and similarly quantified using analytical expressions.

Reconstructing Reliable Powder Patterns from Spikelets (Q)CPMG NMR Spectra: Simplification of UWNMR Crystallography Analysis

Spikelets NMR spectra are very popular as they enable the shortening of experimental time and give the possibility to obtain required NMR parameters for nuclei with ultrawide NMR patterns. Unfortunately, these resulted ssNMR spectra cannot be fitted directly in common software. For this reason, we developed UWNMRSpectralShape (USS) software which transforms spikelets NMR patterns into single continuous lines. Subsequently, these reconstructed spectral envelopes of the (Q)CPMG spikelets patterns can be loaded into common NMR software and automatically fitted, independently of experimental settings. This allows the quadrupole and chemical shift parameters to be accurately determined. Moreover, it makes fitting of spikelets NMR spectra exact, fast and straightforward.

Advances in the Synthesis of Crystalline Metallosilicate Zeolites via Interlayer Expansion

Given the numerous industrial applications of zeolites as adsorbents, catalysts, and ion-exchangers, the development of new zeolite structures is highly desired to expand their practical applications. Currently, a general route to develop new zeolite structures is to use interlayer expansion agents to connect layered silicates. In this review, we briefly summarize the novel zeolite structures constructed from the lamellar precursor zeolites MWW, RUB-36, PREFER, Nu-6(1), COK-5, and PLS-1 via interlayer expansion. The contents of the summary contain detailed experiments, physicochemical characterizations, possible expansion mechanisms, and catalytic properties. In addition, the insertion of metal heteroatoms (such as Ti, Fe, Sn) into the layered zeolite precursor through interlayer expansion, which could be helpful to modify the catalytic function, is discussed.

Recent progress in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance of half-integer spin low-γ quadrupolar nuclei applied to inorganic materials

An overview is presented of recent progress in the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) observation of low-γ nuclei, with a focus on applications to inorganic materials. The technological and methodological advances in the last 20 years, which have underpinned the increased accessibility of low-γ nuclei for study by solid-state NMR techniques, are summarised, including improvements in hardware, pulse sequences and associated computational methods (e.g., first principles calculations and spectral simulation). Some of the key initial observations from inorganic materials of these nuclei are highlighted along with some recent (most within the last 10 years) illustrations of their application to such materials. A summary of other recent reviews of the study of low-γ nuclei by solid-state NMR is provided so that a comprehensive understanding of what has been achieved to date is available.

Looking into the dynamics of molecular crystals of ibuprofen and terephthalic acid using 17 O and 2 H nuclear magnetic resonance analyses

Oxygen-17 and deuterium are two quadrupolar nuclei that are of interest for studying the structure and dynamics of materials by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Here, 17 O and 2 H NMR analyses of crystalline ibuprofen and terephthalic acid are reported. First, improved 17 O-labelling protocols of these molecules are described using mechanochemistry. Then, dynamics occurring around the carboxylic groups of ibuprofen are studied considering variable temperature 17 O and 2 H NMR data, as well as computational modelling (including molecular dynamics simulations). More specifically, motions related to the concerted double proton jump and the 180° flip of the H-bonded (-COOH)2 unit in the crystal structure were looked into, and it was found that the merging of the C=O and C-OH 17 O resonances at high temperatures cannot be explained by the sole presence of one of these motions. Lastly, preliminary experiments were performed with a 2 H-17 O diplexer connected to the probe. Such configurations can allow, among others, 2 H and 17 O NMR spectra to be recorded at different temperatures without needing to tune or to change probe configurations. Overall, this work offers a few leads which could be of use in future studies of other materials using 17 O and 2 H NMR.

Solid State NMR Spectroscopy a Valuable Technique for Structural Insights of Advanced Thin Film Materials: A Review

Solid-state NMR has proven to be a versatile technique for studying the chemical structure, 3D structure and dynamics of all sorts of chemical compounds. In nanotechnology and particularly in thin films, the study of chemical modification, molecular packing, end chain motion, distance determination and solvent-matrix interactions is essential for controlling the final product properties and applications. Despite its atomic-level research capabilities and recent technical advancements, solid-state NMR is still lacking behind other spectroscopic techniques in the field of thin films due to the underestimation of NMR capabilities, availability, great variety of nuclei and pulse sequences, lack of sensitivity for quadrupole nuclei and time-consuming experiments. This article will comprehensively and critically review the work done by solid-state NMR on different types of thin films and the most advanced NMR strategies, which are beyond conventional, and the hardware design used to overcome the technical issues in thin-film research.

Chlorine-35 Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy as an Indirect Probe of the Oxidation Number of Tin in Tin Chlorides

Ultrawideline ³⁵Cl solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra of a series of 12 tin chlorides were recorded. The magnitude of the ³⁵Cl quadrupolar coupling constant (C_Q) was shown to consistently indicate the chemical state (oxidation number) of the bound Sn center. The chemical state of the Sn center was independently verified by tin Mössbauer spectroscopy. C_Q(³⁵Cl) values of >30 MHz correspond to Sn(IV), while C_Q(³⁵Cl) readings of <30 MHz indicate that Sn(II) is present. Tin-119 SSNMR experiments would seem to be the most direct and effective route to interrogating tin in these systems, yet we show that ambiguous results can emerge from this method, which may lead to an incorrect interpretation of the Sn oxidation number. The accumulated ³⁵Cl NMR data are used as a guide to assign the Sn oxidation number in the mixed-valent metal complex Ph₃PPd^ImSnCl₂. The synthesis and crystal structure of the related Ph₃PPt^ImSnCl₂ are reported, and ¹⁹⁵Pt and ³⁵Cl SSNMR experiments were also used to investigate its Pt-Sn bonding. Plane-wave DFT calculations of ³⁵Cl, ¹¹⁹Sn, and ¹⁹⁵Pt NMR parameters are used to model and interpret experimental data, supported by computed ¹¹⁹Sn and ¹⁹⁵Pt chemical shift tensor orientations. Given the ubiquity of directly bound Cl centers in organometallic and inorganic systems, there is tremendous potential for widespread usage of ³⁵Cl SSNMR parameters to provide a reliable indication of the chemical state in metal chlorides.

Solid-state Be-9 NMR of beryllium compounds

Despite the favorable NMR-spectroscopic features of the 9Be isotope, the exploration of solid Beryllium compounds by this method has been very limited, owing to safety concerns regarding their preparation and handling. The present review aims to be the first comprehensive one on this topic, summarizing the classical and modern methodologies available for determining the relevant 9Be NMR observables in the solid state. Results on molecular crystals, oxidic materials, and intermetallic systems will be discussed in terms of their informational content in relation to atomic and electronic structure and dynamics, leading to suggestions for future paths of investigation.

Dynamic nuclear polarization on a hybridized hammerhead ribozyme: An explorative study of RNA folding and direct DNP with a paramagnetic metal ion cofactor

While uniform isotope labeling of ribonucleic acids (RNA) can simply and efficiently be achieved by in-vitro transcription, the specific introduction of nucleotides in larger constructs is non-trivial and often ineffective. Here, we demonstrate how a medium-sized (67-mer), biocatalytically relevant RNA (hammerhead ribozyme, HHRz) can be formed by spontaneous hybridization of two differently isotope-labeled strands, each individually synthesized by in-vitro transcription. This allows on the one hand for a significant reduction in the number of isotope-labeled nucleotides and thus spectral overlap particularly under magic-angle spinning (MAS) dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR conditions, on the other hand for orthogonal ¹³C/¹⁵N-labeling of complementary strands and thus for specific investigation of structurally or functionally relevant inter-strand and/or inter-stem contacts. By this method, we are able to confirm a non-canonical interaction due to single-site resolution and unique spectral assignments by two-dimensional ¹³C-¹³C (PDSD) as well as ¹⁵N-¹³C (TEDOR) correlation spectroscopy under "conventional" DNP enhancement. This contact is indicative of the ribozyme's functional conformation, and is present in frozen solution irrespective of the presence or absence of a Mg²⁺ co-factor. Finally, we use different isotope-labeling schemes in order to investigate the distance dependence of paramagnetic interactions and direct metal-ion DNP if the diamagnetic Mg²⁺ is substituted by paramagnetic Mn²⁺.

Materializing opportunities for NMR of solids

Advancements in sensitivity and resolution of NMR of solids are opening a bonanza of fundamental and technological opportunities in materials science. Many of these are at the boundaries of related disciplines that provide creative inputs to motivate the development of new methodologies and possibilities for new applications. As Boltzmann limitations are surmounted by dynamic-nuclear-polarization- and laser-enhanced hyperpolarization techniques, the correlative benefits of multidimensional NMR are becoming more and more impactful. Nevertheless, there are limits, and the atomic-level information provided by solid-state NMR will be most useful in combination with state-of-the-art diffraction, microscopy, computational, and materials synthesis methods. Collectively these can be expected to lead to design criteria that will promote discovery of new materials, lead to novel or improved material properties, catalyze new applications, and motivate further methodological advancements.

Rare-earth solid-state NMR spectroscopy of intermetallic compounds: The case of the 175Lu isotope

The feasibility of high-resolution ¹⁷⁵Lu solid-state NMR spectroscopy in intermetallic compounds crystallizing with cubic crystal structures is explored by magic-angle spinning NMR at different magnetic flux densities. The large quadrupole moment of this isotope (3.49 × 10^-28 m²) restricts observation of the NMR signal to nearly perfectly ordered crystalline samples. Signals are successfully detected and analyzed in the binary pnictides LuPn (NaCl-type structure; Pn = P, As, Sb) and the intermetallic compounds LuPtSb and LuAuSn, both crystallizing with the MgAgAs-type structure. Sources of line broadening are discussed based on field-dependent static and MAS-NMR spectra, providing guidance with respect to measurement conditions resulting in reliable results. The results highlight the importance of ionic/covalent bonding effects for the detectability of the signal, which reduce the probability of real structure effects commonly observed in intermetallic compounds. No ¹⁷⁵Lu NMR signals can be observed in various cubic Heusler compounds. This is attributed to mixed site occupancies and other structural defects producing electric field gradients whose interaction with the ¹⁷⁵Lu quadrupole moments broadens the signal beyond detection.

121/123Sb Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectroscopy: Characterization of Non-Covalent Pnictogen Bonds and NQR Crystallography

Pnictogen (or pnicogen) bonding is an attractive interaction between the electrophilic region of group 15 elements (N, P, As, Sb, Bi) and a nucleophile. This interaction for which unique applications in catalysis have recently been uncovered continues to gain popularity. Here, we investigate a series of pnictogen-bonded cocrystals based on SbF₃ and SbCl₃, prepared via mechanochemical ball milling, with ^121/123Sb ( I = ⁵/₂ and ⁷/₂, respectively) nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy. Observed NQR frequency shifts upon cocrystallization are on the order of 0.1 to 10 MHz and are clearly diagnostic of the formation of pnictogen bonds to antimony. Further evidence for pnictogen bonding is obtained by complementary ¹³C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR experiments. DFT calculations of NMR parameters as well as natural localized molecular orbital analyses support the experimental findings and elucidate the electronic origins of the experimental NQR frequency shifts. This work provides insights into the changes in the antimony quadrupolar coupling constant upon pnictogen bonding: strikingly, the decreases noted here parallel those known for hydrogen bonds, but contrast with the increases reported for halogen bonds. The utility of the observed antimony nuclear quadrupolar coupling constants in constraining structural models of cocrystals for which diffraction-based structures are unavailable, i.e., a rudimentary implementation of NQR crystallography, is established. Overall, this work offers a new approach to understand emerging classes of electrophilic interactions and to contextualize them in the broader landscape of established chemical bonding paradigms.

New frontiers for solid-state NMR across the periodic table: a snapshot of modern techniques and instrumentation

Selected highlights of the recent literature on solid-state NMR of some of the lesser studied nuclei are provided. The roles of ultrahigh magnetic fields, radiofrequency pulse sequences, dynamic nuclear polarization, isotopic enrichment, and nuclear quadrupole resonance in opening up the periodic table to in-depth study are discussed.
