Impact of graphene oxide on the magnetorheological behaviour of BaFe12O19 nanoparticles filled polyacrylamide hydrogel

Magnetic properties of a soft magnetic elastomer based on antioxidant magnetic composite particles and a water-soluble polymer matrix

A soft magnetic elastomer, called a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE), based on a polyacrylamide (PAM) modified carbonyl iron particle (P-CIP) composite and a water-soluble PAM matrix was designed and prepared by the chemical polymerization and crosslinking method. P-CIPs were synthesized by the polymerization of an acrylamide monomer on the CIP surface to improve the oxidation resistance of CIPs and the interaction between the particles and polymer matrix in the MRE. The results obtained from infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (in a nitrogen atmosphere) show that the coating effect of the polymer on the particle surface is very good. TGA (in an air atmosphere) curves indicate that the P-CIPs show strong oxidation resistance. Meanwhile, the test results obtained for the magnetic properties show that the MRE with P-CIPs has a saturation magnetization (94.7 emu g^-1), a relative magnetorheological effect (687.5%), and a Payne effect factor (92%) under the action of a strong magnetic field (1 T). It was also clearly found that these properties are enhanced with increasing magnetic field intensity. Furthermore, the chain effect of magnetic particles under a magnetic field, the strong particle-matrix interaction and its breakdown process with increasing shear strain were discussed in this work.

Magnetic materials: a journey from finding north to an exciting printed future

The potential implications/applications of printing technologies are being recognized worldwide across different disciplines and industries. Printed magnetoactive smart materials, whose physical properties can be changed by the application of external magnetic fields, are an exclusive class of smart materials that are highly valuable due to their magnetically activated smart and/or multifunctional response. Such smart behavior allows, among others, high speed and low-cost wireless activation, fast response, and high controllability with no relevant limitations in design, shape, or dimensions. Nevertheless, the printing of magnetoactive materials is still in its infancy, and the design apparatus, the material set, and the fabrication procedures are far from their optimum features. Thus, this review presents the main concepts that allow interconnecting printing technologies with magnetoactive materials by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this joint field, trying to highlight the scientific obstacles that still limit a wider application of these materials nowadays. Additionally, it discusses how these limitations could be overcome, together with an outlook of the remaining challenges in the emerging digitalization, Internet of Things, and Industry 4.0 paradigms. Finally, as magnetoactive materials will play a leading role in energy generation and management, the magnetic-based Green Deal is also addressed.

Poly(2-oxazoline)-based magnetic hydrogels: Synthesis, performance and cytotoxicity

Research on the subject of smart biomaterials has become a cornerstone of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Herein, the authors report on developing magnetic hydrogels that combine high biocompatibility and remarkable activity in magnetic fields. We fabricated magnetic hydrogels based on poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (POx) via living ring-opening cationic polymerization with in-situ embedding of the carbonyl iron (CI) particles. Investigation was made as to the effect exerted by the concentration of CI on magnetic, viscoelastic/magnetorheological properties, the degree of equilibrium swelling, and cytotoxicity. The hydrogels exhibited an open pore structure, as evidenced by computed tomography (CT) imaging. Susceptibility measurements revealed the concentration-dependent field-induced particle restructuration indicating elongation/contraction of the material, thereby determining the potential for magneto-mechanical stimulation of the cells. The POx-based magnetic hydrogels were amphiphilic in character, showing decrease in their capability to hold liquid alongside increase in CI concentration. Viscoelastic measurements suggested that interaction occurred between the particles and matrix based on inconsistency between the experimental storage modulus and the Krieger-Dougherty model. The synthesized materials exhibited excellent biocompatibility toward the 3T3 fibroblast cell line in tests of extract toxicity and direct contact cytotoxicity (ISO standards). The unique combination of properties exhibited by the material - magneto-mechanical activity and biocompatibility - could prove favorable in fields such as biomedicine and biomechanics.
