Abstract
Advances in controlled radical polymerizations by cobalt complexes have primarily taken advantage of the reactivity of cobalt as a persistent radical to reversibly deactivate propagating chains by forming a carbon-cobalt bond. However, cobalt-mediated radical polymerizations require stoichiometric ratios of a cobalt complex, deterring its utility in synthesizing well-defined polymers. Here, we developed a strategy to use cobalt as a catalyst to control radical polymerizations via halogen atom transfer with alkyl halide initiators. Using a modified, hydrophobic analogue of vitamin B12 (heptamethyl ester cobyrinate) as a cobalt precatalyst, we controlled the polymerization of acrylate monomers. The polymerization efficiency of the cobalt catalyst was significantly improved by additional bromide anions, which enhanced the deactivation of propagating radicals yielding polymers with dispersity values <1.2 using catalyst concentrations as low as 5 mol %. We anticipate that the development of cobalt catalysis in atom transfer radical polymerization will enable new opportunities in designing catalytic systems for the controlled synthesis of polymers.

Abstract
Cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) is a versatile technique for controlling the polymerization of vinyl monomers via reversible termination using CoII complexes as persistent radical deactivators. Here, we report a facile approach for the in situ generation of Co-H as a discrete initiator and mediator for CMRP of acrylate and acrylamide monomers, overcoming the limitations of existing initiation strategies. In situ oxidation of a CoII complex followed by transmetalation with silane generates a Co-H species, which initiates polymerization via hydrometalation of the monomer. This method precludes an induction period with excellent control over targeted molecular weight and dispersity. Strikingly, our approach allows complete polymerization when the induction period ends for conventional CMRP. A broad scope of monomers is amenable to this protocol, including acrylates and acrylamides. Tunable catalyst electronics afford tailored dispersity while maintaining agreement in molecular weight in stark contrast to conventional methods. Elimination of this induction period imbues polymerization behavior entirely to the catalyst electronic effects on reversible deactivation/activation rates.

Abstract
Redox initiated emulsion polymerisation of vinyl acetate and neodecanoic acid vinyl ester was investigated at temperatures ranging from -1 °C to 87 °C (initiation temperature between -1 °C and 60 °C), using varying molar ratios of the following redox components: l-ascorbic acid, tert-butyl hydroperoxide and ammonium iron(iii) sulfate dodecahydrate as a catalyst. The high flexibility of redox initiators enables product properties, as well as space-time-yield, to be adjusted as required. Polymers being products by process, it was presumed that modifying the conversion rate would lead to a different product. However, it was shown that the reaction rate is adjustable by varying the catalyst amount without changing the product properties, such as molecular weight, particle size, glass transition temperature and polymer structure, while reducing the overall process time by 40-86% (at equimolar ratios of reducing and oxidising agent). In contrast, variation of the tert-butyl hydroperoxide content resulted in changes of the molecular weight. The influence of the initiation temperature and of the redox system on the reaction rate was determined, enabling control over the reaction rate in the whole temperature range. Meanwhile, overall process times of approximately 2-240 min and high conversions of 90-99% could be achieved. Statistical modelling confirmed the results and facilitated predictions, enabling the conversion rate to be adjusted to the desired properties. The possibility of being able to adjust the conversion rate and product properties independently of each other creates additional degrees of freedom in process design.

Abstract
Cobalt-mediated radical polymerizations (CMRPs) have been initiated by the radical decarboxylation of tetrachlorophthalimide activated esters. This allows for the controlled radical polymerization of activated monomers across a broad temperature range with a single cobalt species, with the incorporation of polymer end groups derived from simple carboxylic acid derivatives and termination with an organozinc reagent. This method has been applied to the synthesis of a polymer/graphene conjugate and a water-soluble protein/polymer conjugate, demonstrating the first examples of CMRP in graphene and protein conjugation.

Abstract
Cobalt complexes have played an essential role in different chemical reactions. One of them that has attracted substantial attention in polymer science is cobalt mediated radical polymerization (CMRP), which is famous for its remarkable efficiency in controlling the radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and other less active monomers (LAMs). Two pathways, reversible termination (RT) and degenerative transfer (DT), were recognized to control the polymerization in CMRP and could be further used to rationalize the mechanism of other RDRP methods. These control mechanisms were then found to be correlated to the redox potential of cobalt complexes and thus could be judged more quantitatively. The control of polymer composition and tacticity could also be achieved by using CMRP. The hybridization of CMRP and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) could directly synthesize the vinyl acetate/methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate/styrene block copolymers in one pot. The copolymer of acrylates and 1-octene could be obtained by visible-light-induced CMRP. With the addition of bulky Lewis acid, CMRP of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) showed high isotacticities with the contents of meso dyads (m) and meso triads (mm) up to 94 % and 87 %, respectively, and generated the crystalline PDMA with Tm as high as 276 °C. This personal account reviewed the development of CMRP with the mechanistic understanding, the control of composition and stereoselectivity of the polymeric products, and its perspective.

Abstract
Partly or fully renewable (co)polymers are gaining interest in both academia and industry. Polyethylene is a widely used polymer, classically derived from fossil fuels, with a high versatility stemming from the introduction of comonomers altering the mechanical properties. The introduction of renewable functionalities into this polymer is highly attractive to obtain functional, tunable, and at least partially renewable polyethylenes. We herein report the introduction of biosourced cyclic carbonates into polyethylene using organometallic-mediated radical polymerization under mild conditions. Molecular weights of up to 14 600 g mol-1 with dispersities as low as 1.19 were obtained, and the cyclic carbonate content could be easily tuned by the ethylene pressure during the polymerization. As a proof of concept, the hydrolysis of the cyclic carbonates of a representative copolymer was explored, and it provided polyethylene-bearing vicinal diols, with a hydrolysis degree of 71%. Given the multitude of chemoselective modifications possible on cyclic carbonates as well as the fact that many allylic- and alkylidene-type cyclic carbonates are accessible from renewable resources, this work opens up an avenue for the design of functional and more sustainable polyethylenes.

Abstract
Achieving well-defined polymers with ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) is an enduring pursuit in the field of reversible deactivation radical polymerization. Synthetic protocols have been successfully developed to achieve UHMWs with low dispersities exclusively from conjugated monomers while no polymerization of unconjugated monomers has provided the same level of control. Herein, an oxygen-tolerant photoenzymatic RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization was exploited to tackle this challenge for unconjugated monomers at 10 °C, enabling facile synthesis of well-defined, linear and star polymers with near-quantitative conversions, unprecedented UHMWs and low dispersities. The exquisite level of control over composition, MW and architecture, coupled with operational ease, mild conditions and environmental friendliness, broadens the monomer scope to include unconjugated monomers, and to achieve previously inaccessible low-dispersity UHMWs.

Abstract
The recent focus of media and governments on renewability, green chemistry, and circular economy has led to a surge in the synthesis of renewable monomers and polymers. In this review, focussing on renewable monomers for reversible deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRP), it is highlighted that for the majority of the monomers and polymers reported, the claim to renewability is not always accurate. By closely examining the sustainability of synthetic routes and the renewability of starting materials, fully renewable monomers are identified and discussed in terms of sustainability, polymerization behavior, and properties obtained after polymerization. The holistic discussion considering the overall preparation process of polymers, that is, monomer syntheses, origin of starting materials, solvents used, the type of RDRP technique utilized, and the purification method, allows to highlight certain topics which need to be addressed in order to progress toward not only (partially) renewable, but sustainable monomers and polymers using RDRPs.

Abstract
The use of [Mn(RF)(CO)5] (RF = CF3, CHF2, CH2CF3, COCF2CH3) to initiate the radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (F2C=CH2, VDF) and the radical alternating copolymerization of vinyl acetate (CH2=CHOOCCH3, VAc) with tert-butyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylate (MAF-TBE) by generating primary RF• radicals is presented. Three different initiating methods with [Mn(CF3)(CO)5] (thermal at ca. 100 °C, visible light and UV irradiations) are described and compared. Fair (60%) to satisfactory (74%) polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) yields were obtained from the visible light and UV activations, respectively. Molar masses of PVDF reaching 53,000 g·mol-1 were produced from the visible light initiation after 4 h. However, the use of [Mn(CHF2)(CO)5] and [Mn(CH2CF3)(CO)5] as radical initiators produced PVDF in a very low yield (0 to 7%) by both thermal and photochemical initiations, while [Mn(COCF2CH3)(CO)5] led to the formation of PVDF in a moderate yield (7% to 23%). Nevertheless, complexes [Mn(CH2CF3)(CO)5] and [Mn(COCHF2)(CO)5] efficiently initiated the alternating VAc/MAF-TBE copolymerization. All synthesized polymers were characterized by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy, which proves the formation of the expected PVDF or poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) and showing the chaining defects and the end-groups in the case of PVDF. The kinetics of VDF homopolymerization showed a linear ln[M]0/[M] versus time relationship, but a decrease of molar masses vs. VDF conversion was noted in all cases, which shows the absence of control. These PVDFs were rather thermally stable in air (up to 410 °C), especially for those having the highest molar masses. The melting points ranged from 164 to 175 °C while the degree of crystallinity varied from 44% to 53%.

Abstract
Controlled polymerization of acyclic N-vinylamides, that is, N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide (NMVA), N-vinylacetamide (NVA), and N-vinylformamide (NVF), by organotellurium-mediated radical polymerization (TERP) is reported. The corresponding poly(N-vinylamide)s with controlled molecular weight and low dispersity (Ð<1.25) were obtained with high monomer conversion in all cases. This is the first report on the controlled polymerization of NVF. Hydrolysis of the polymers, in particular PNVF, occurred quantitatively under mild reaction conditions, giving structurally controlled poly(vinylamine)s. Block copolymers containing poly(N-vinylamide) and poly(vinylamine) segments were also synthesized in a controlled manner.

Abstract
An unprecedented level of control for the radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), yielding well-defined PVDF (at least up to 14 500 g mol-1 ) with low dispersity (≤1.32), was achieved using organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) with an organocobalt compound as initiator. The high chain-end fidelity was demonstrated by the synthesis of PVDF- and PVAc-containing di-and triblock copolymers. DFT calculations rationalize the efficient reactivation of both head and tail chain end dormant species.

Abstract
The first successfully controlled radical polymerization (CRP) of ethylene is reported using several organotellurium chain-transfer agents (CTAs) under mild conditions (70 °C, 200 bar of ethylene) within the concept of organotellurium-mediated radical polymerization (TERP). In contrast to preceding works on CRPs of ethylene applying reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT), the TERP system provided a high livingness and chain-end functionalization of polyethylene chains. Molar-mass distributions with dispersities between 1.3 and 2.1 were obtained up to average molar masses of 5000 g mol-1 . As in the RAFT system, the high reactivity of the growing polyethylenyl radical led to an inherent side reaction. For the presented TERP systems, however, this side reaction did not result in dead chains, while it could even be effectively suppressed by a good choice of the CTA.

Abstract
The organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) and its OMR copolymerization (OMRcoP) with tert-butyl 2-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) mediated by Co(SAL)₂ (SAL = 2-formylphenolato or deprotonated salicylaldehyde) produced relatively well-defined PVAc and poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymers at moderate temperature (<40 °C) in bulk. The resulting alternating copolymer was characterized by ¹H-, 13C- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by size exclusion chromatography. The linear first-order kinetic plot, the linear evolutions of the molar mass with total monomer conversion, and the relatively low dispersity (Đ~1.55) of the resulting copolymers suggest that this cobalt complex provides some degree of control over the copolymerization of VAc and MAF-TBE. Compared to the previously investigated cobalt complex OMRP mediators having a fully oxygen-based first coordination sphere, this study emphasizes a few peculiarities of Co(SAL)₂: a lower ability to trap radical chains as compared to Co(acac)₂ and the absence of catalytic chain transfer reactions, which dominates polymerizations carried in the presence of 9-oxyphenalenone cobalt derivative.
