Abstract
Background: Almost by default, young adult students are at increased risk of suffering from mental health issues, and this holds particularly true for medical students. Indeed, compared to the general population and non-medical students, medical students report higher scores for symptoms of depression. For Swiss medical students, research on the associations between psychiatric characteristics and symptoms of depression and insomnia, including cognitive-emotional processes and social activity, has been lacking so far. Given this, the aims of the present study were to relate self-declared psychiatric characteristics to symptoms of depression, insomnia, emotion regulation, and social activity. Methods: A total of 575 medical students (mean age: 22.4 years; 68.9% females) completed an online survey covering sociodemographic information (age and gender), study context (year of study), self-declared psychiatric characteristics and symptoms of depression, insomnia, emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal vs. emotion suppression), and social activity. Data on insomnia sum scores and categories of historical samples (862 non-medical students and 533 police and emergency response service officers) were used for comparison. Results: Of the 575 participants, 190 participants (33%) self-declared psychiatric issues, such as major depressive disorder; anxiety disorders, including PTSD and adjustment disorders; eating disorders; ADHD; or a combination of such psychiatric issues. Self-reporting a psychiatric issue was related to higher symptoms of depression and insomnia and lower symptoms of social activity and cognitive reappraisal (always with significant p-values and medium effect sizes). Compared to historical data for non-medical students and police and emergency response service officers, medical students reported higher insomnia scores. In a regression model, current self-declared psychiatric issues, female gender, higher scores for insomnia, and lower scores for social activity were associated with higher scores for depression. Conclusions: Among a sample of Swiss medical students, the occurrence of self-declared psychiatric issues was associated with higher scores for depression and insomnia and lower cognitive reappraisal and social activity. Further, insomnia scores and insomnia categories were higher when compared to non-medical students and to police and emergency response service officers. The data suggest that medical schools might introduce specifically tailored intervention and support programs to mitigate medical students' mental health issues. This holds particularly true for insomnia, as standardized and online-delivered treatment programs for insomnia (eCBTi) are available.

Neurexan Prescription Is Associated with Lower Risk of Sleep Disorder Recurrence and Depression Prevalence as Compared to Z-Drugs and Benzodiazepines: A Retrospective Database Analysis in Germany. Abstract
Real-world evidence on the association between natural medicinal products and the recurrence of sleep disorders is currently limited, particularly when compared to the evidence reported for prescription hypnotics. In a retrospective cohort analysis, we investigated patients with sleep disorders prescribed either the natural medicinal product Neurexan (Nx4), benzodiazepines, or nonbenzodiazepines (Z-drugs) using the IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, which encompasses electronic medical records nationwide in Germany. A 1:1 matching procedure based on age, sex, prevalent depression, anxiety or adjustment disorder, and the number of medical consultations in the past 12 months resulted in four cohorts: patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed Z-drugs (two cohorts with 8594 matched patients each), and another cohort of patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed benzodiazepines (7779 matched pairs). Results from multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models demonstrated that Nx4 was associated with a significantly lower risk of recurrent sleep disorder diagnosis within 30-365 days after prescription compared to both Z-drugs (HR = 0.65, 95%CI = 0.60-0.70, p < 0.001) and benzodiazepines (HR = 0.85, 95%CI = 0.79-0.93, p < 0.001). Additionally, Nx4 was associated with a lower prevalence of depression compared to Z-drugs (HR = 0.90, 95%CI = 0.83-0.98, p = 0.020) and benzodiazepines (HR = 0.89, 95%CI = 0.82-0.97, p = 0.009). These findings suggest an association between Nx4 and improved sleep and mental health outcomes. However, due to inherent limitations in the study design, the causality of this relationship cannot be stated.

Abstract
Behavioral states such as sleep and wake are highly correlated with specific patterns of rhythmic activity in the cortex. During low arousal states such as slow wave sleep, the cortex is synchronized and dominated by low frequency rhythms coordinated across multiple regions. Although recent evidence suggests that GABAergic inhibitory neurons are key players in cortical state modulation, the in vivo circuit mechanisms coordinating synchronized activity among local and distant neocortical networks are not well understood. Here, we show that somatostatin and chondrolectin co-expressing cells (Sst-Chodl cells), a sparse and unique class of neocortical inhibitory neurons, are selectively active during low arousal states and are largely silent during periods of high arousal. In contrast to other neocortical inhibitory neurons, we show these neurons have long-range axons that project across neocortical areas. Activation of Sst-Chodl cells is sufficient to promote synchronized cortical states characteristic of low arousal, with increased spike co-firing and low frequency brain rhythms, and to alter behavioral states by promoting sleep. Contrary to the prevailing belief that sleep is exclusively driven by subcortical mechanisms, our findings reveal that these long-range inhibitory neurons not only track changes in behavioral state but are sufficient to induce both sleep-like cortical states and sleep behavior, establishing a crucial circuit component in regulating behavioral states.

Abstract
Introduction Non-adherence to treatment recommendations is a significant problem, as it contributes to the progression of the disease and to the exacerbation of distressing symptoms. Failure to cope with the disease and elevated levels of stress, in turn, influence the choice of strategy for coping with a difficult situation, and thus adherence to recommendations. Objectives The purpose of our study was to evaluate the impact of the subjects' stress coping styles on therapeutic adherence, life satisfaction, disease acceptance and quality of life (QoL) in people with mood disorders. Methods This survey-based study included 102 respondents diagnosed with mood disorders, living in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It was performed using the sociodemographic questionnaire and standardized tools: The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), The Short Form-36 (SF-36) Health Survey, The Adherence to Refills and Medication Scale (ARMS), and The Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS). Results Some 47.06% of the respondents suffered from depressive disorders, while 34.31% had depression or mixed anxiety disorder. Patients who made greater use of an emotion-focused style were found to have significantly lower life satisfaction than other patients. Moreover, this style was related to such SF-36 domains as general health, social functioning, role emotional, vitality, and mental health, as well as to physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS). Conclusion Treatment non-adherence is a serious challenge in the treatment of patients with mood disorders. Individuals who do not adequately follow treatment recommendations often resort to alternative activities as a mechanism for coping with difficult situations. Patients who predominantly adopt an emotion-oriented coping style tend to experience lower life satisfaction and greater difficulty accepting their condition compared to their peers. Conversely, patients who adopt a task-oriented coping style report better quality of life than those who rely on emotion-oriented coping or alternative activities.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Poor sleep quality has been frequently observed in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. In the present study, we analyzed the presence of poor sleep quality in a sample of Mexican individuals with rheumatoid arthritis; then, we compared sociodemographic and clinical characteristics among patients to determine risk factors for poor sleep quality. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 102 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis from a hospital in Mexico. We evaluated disease activity (DAS28), quality of sleep using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the presence of depression and anxiety with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. We performed a Chi-square test and a t-test. Then, we performed a logistic regressions model of the associated features in a univariable analysis. Results: Poor sleep quality was observed in 41.75% of the individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Being married was a proactive factor (OR 0.04, 95% CI 0.1-0.9, p = 0.04), whereas having one's hips affected or presenting with anxiety and depression was associated with poor sleep quality (OR 4.6, 95% CI 1.2-17.69, p = 0.02). After a multivariate analysis, having anxiety (OR 5.0, 95% CI 1.4-17.7, p < 0.01) and depression (OR 9.2, 95% CI 1.0-8.1, p < 0.01) remained associated with a higher risk of having poor sleep quality. Other clinical characteristics among patients were not significantly different. Conclusions: Our results showed that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis who also presented with depression or anxiety had a higher risk of suffering from poor sleep quality. However, more studies with larger samples are necessary to replicate these results in the Mexican population.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances are common and may impact fracture risk directly by influencing bone turnover or indirectly through shared risk factors or mediators. To investigate the association between self-reported sleep disturbances across the menopausal transition (MT) and fractures, we prospectively studied 3101 women enrolled in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). At each of 14 study visits spaced approximately 18 months apart, a standardized validated scale ascertained trouble falling asleep, waking up several times during the night, and waking up earlier than planned. Two time-varying exposures were modeled: presence of any of the three disturbances at least three times per week and waking up several times during the night at least three times per week. Base models adjusted for fixed (race/ethnicity, study site) and time-varying characteristics (age, body mass index, and MT stage). Fully adjusted models also included time-varying bone beneficial and detrimental medications, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, diabetes, depression and sleep medications, and depressive symptoms. Women who experienced a fracture were more likely to report a greater frequency of having trouble falling asleep, waking up several times, and/or waking up earlier: 35% versus 30% at baseline, p = 0.02. In the base models, women who had any of the three sleep disturbances at least three times per week had a higher risk of any fracture, odds ratio (OR) = 1.23 (95% confidence intervals, 1.02, 1.48) and nontraumatic fracture, OR = 1.36 (1.03, 1.80). These associations were largely attenuated to nonsignificance in the fully adjusted model. Sensitivity analyses limiting our sample to 2315 SWAN women enrolled in the bone mineral density (BMD) centers yielded similar results. Additional adjustment for femoral neck BMD had no effect on our results. In conclusion, self-reported sleep disturbances were associated with an increased risk of fractures, but these associations likely reflect shared risk factors or factors in the causal pathway. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Sleep disruptions are quite common in psychological disorders, but the underlying mechanism remains obscure. Wolfram syndrome 1 (WS1) is an autosomal recessive disease mainly characterized by diabetes insipidus/mellitus, neurodegeneration and psychological disorders. It is caused by loss-of function mutations of the WOLFRAM SYNDROME 1 (WFS1) gene, which encodes an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident transmembrane protein. Heterozygous mutation carriers do not develop WS1 but exhibit 26-fold higher risk of having psychological disorders. Since WS1 patients display sleep abnormalities, we aimed to explore the role of WFS1 in sleep regulation so as to help elucidate the cause of sleep disruptions in psychological disorders. We found in Drosophila that knocking down wfs1 in all neurons and wfs1 mutation lead to reduced sleep and dampened circadian rhythm. These phenotypes are mainly caused by lack of wfs1 in dopamine 2-like receptor (Dop2R) neurons which act to promote wake. Consistently, the influence of wfs1 on sleep is blocked or partially rescued by inhibiting or knocking down the rate-limiting enzyme of dopamine synthesis, suggesting that wfs1 modulates sleep via dopaminergic signaling. Knocking down wfs1 alters the excitability of Dop2R neurons, while genetic interactions reveal that lack of wfs1 reduces sleep via perturbation of ER-mediated calcium homeostasis. Taken together, we propose a role for wfs1 in modulating the activities of Dop2R neurons by impinging on intracellular calcium homeostasis, and this in turn influences sleep. These findings provide a potential mechanistic insight for pathogenesis of diseases associated with WFS1 mutations.

Abstract
Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is one of the most common birth defects, with 6,000 babies born annually with Down Syndrome in the U.S. One of many health risk factors individuals with Down Syndrome experience is sleep issues, ranging from poor sleep quality to high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea. This literature review aims to review these sleep challenges in this population and explore consequences and treatment options.

Abstract
Sleep plays a key role in the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of mood disorders. However, only a few studies have investigated sleep architecture during the manic episodes of Bipolar Disorder (BD) and changes in sleep parameters that follow clinical variations. Twenty-one patients (8 males, 13 females) affected by BD, manic phase, underwent polysomnographic recordings (PSG) at the beginning of the admission in our ward (T0) and after three weeks of hospital treatment (T1). All participants were clinically evaluated using Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). During the admission, we observed an increase in both quantity (Total Sleep Time - TST) and quality (Sleep Efficiency - SE) of sleep. In addition, clinical improvement, evaluated with YMRS and PSQI scales, was accompanied by a significant increase in the percentage of REM sleep. According to our findings, the improvement of manic symptoms is accompanied by an increase in "REM pressure" (increase in REM% and REM density, reduction of REM latency). Overall, changes in sleep architecture appear to be markers sensitive to clinical variations during manic phases of Bipolar Disorder.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) etiology is still not completely understood, and many individuals resist the traditional treatments. Chronic exposure to stressful events can contribute to development and progression and be involved in biological changes underlying MDD. Among the biological mechanisms involved, inflammatory changes and oxidative balance are associated with MDD pathophysiology. Quetiapine, a second-generation antipsychotic, induces a better therapeutic response in individuals refractory to traditional treatments. The main objectives of this research were as follows: to evaluate the effect of chronic mild stress (CMS) on depressive-like behaviors, oxidative stress, and inflammation in adult rats; to evaluate the possible antidepressant, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of quetiapine. The animals were submitted to CMS protocols. At the end of the CMS, the animals were submitted to a chronic treatment for 14 days with the following drugs: quetiapine (20 mg/kg), imipramine (30 mg/kg), and escitalopram (10 mg/kg). At the end of the treatments, the animals were evaluated in the open field tests, anhedonia (splash test), and forced swimming. The animals were euthanized after the behavioral tests, and serum samples were collected. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were analyzed. CMS induced an increase in depressive-like behaviors, and quetiapine significantly reduced these behaviors. MPO activity and IL-6 levels increased in the serum of animals submitted to CMS. Quetiapine significantly reduced MPO activity and IL-6 levels. These results corroborate other evidence, indicating that chronic stress is a relevant phenomenon in the etiology of depression and suggesting that quetiapine induces an antidepressant effect because it reduces oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms.

Abstract
Physical activity is correlated with, and effectively treats various forms of psychopathology. However, whether biological correlates of physical activity and psychopathology are shared remains unclear. Here, we examined the extent to which the neural and genetic architecture of physical activity and mental health are shared. Using data from the UK Biobank (N = 6389), we applied canonical correlation analysis to estimate associations between the amplitude and connectivity strength of subnetworks of three major neurocognitive networks (default mode, DMN; salience, SN; central executive networks, CEN) with accelerometer-derived measures of physical activity and self-reported mental health measures (primarily of depression, anxiety disorders, neuroticism, subjective well-being, and risk-taking behaviors). We estimated the genetic correlation between mental health and physical activity measures, as well as putative causal relationships by applying linkage disequilibrium score regression, genomic structural equational modeling, and latent causal variable analysis to genome-wide association summary statistics (GWAS N = 91,105-500,199). Physical activity and mental health were associated with connectivity strength and amplitude of the DMN, SN, and CEN (r's ≥ 0.12, p's < 0.048). These neural correlates exhibited highly similar loading patterns across mental health and physical activity models even when accounting for their shared variance. This suggests a largely shared brain network architecture between mental health and physical activity. Mental health and physical activity (including sleep) were also genetically correlated (|rg| = 0.085-0.121), but we found no evidence for causal relationships between them. Collectively, our findings provide empirical evidence that mental health and physical activity have shared brain and genetic architectures and suggest potential candidate subnetworks for future studies on brain mechanisms underlying beneficial effects of physical activity on mental health.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate Chinese immigrants' sleep quality and associations between the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic's impact and racism and sleep disruption using a cross-sectional online survey. A total of 507 Chinese immigrants were recruited via social network sites. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. The pandemic's impact and racism were measured using questions developed for this study. More than 42% of participants reported poor sleep quality. Those who reported having been affected by the pandemic had poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and greater daytime dysfunction. Those who experienced racist incidents were more likely to use sleep medication and exhibit poor subjective sleep quality, long sleep latency, short sleep duration, and daytime dysfunction. Chinese immigrants' sleep health warrants particular consideration by health care professionals. Timely, effective interventions, such as relaxation techniques and online psychoeducation, need to be delivered in the Chinese community. Abstract
The present paper aims at reviewing and commenting on the relationships between sleep and circadian phasing alterations and neurodegenerative/neuroprogressive processes in mood disorder. We carried out a systematic review, according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase electronic databases for literature related to mood disorders, sleep disturbances, and neurodegenerative/neuroprogressive processes in relation to (1) neuroinflammation, (2) activation of the stress system, (3) oxidative stress, (4) accumulation of neurotoxic proteins, and (5) neuroprotection deficit. Seventy articles were collectively selected and analyzed. Experimental and clinical studies revealed that insomnia, conditions of sleep loss, and altered circadian sleep may favor neurodegeneration and neuroprogression in mood disorders. These sleep disturbances may induce a state of chronic inflammation by enhancing neuroinflammation, both directly and indirectly, via microglia and astrocytes activation. They may act as neurobiological stressors that by over-activating the stress system may negatively influence neural plasticity causing neuronal damage. In addition, sleep disturbances may favor the accumulation of neurotoxic proteins, favor oxidative stress, and a deficit in neuroprotection hence contributing to neurodegeneration and neuroprogression. Targeting sleep disturbances in the clinical practice may hold a neuroprotective value for mood disorders.

Abstract
Background
Sleep disturbances are frequently observed in patients with epilepsy (PWE), with adversely effects on life quality and seizure control. The study aimed to assess the gender differences in incidence and factors of sleep disturbances in PWE.
Methods
PWE confirmed the diagnosis of epilepsy were consecutively enrolled in this cross-sectional study, with detailed information recorded. A group of healthy participants were recruited as the control. Sleep and mood disorders were evaluated with the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI).
Results
One hundred and thirty-three patients (age: 30.2 ± 10.6 years, men: 51%) and 150 healthy subjects were recruited in this study. Compared with healthy controls, PWE had higher mean scores of the ISI and BDI (p < 0.001 and p = 0.01). There were no significant gender differences in the prevalence and scores of sleep disturbances in PWE. In the overall PWE, nocturnal seizures and focal epilepsy were respectively related to insomnia and poor sleep quality (OR = 3.35, p = 0.024; OR = 3.08, p = 0.013), and mood disorders were also important factors in sleep disturbances (p < 0.05). In the analysis by gender, depression, anxiety, nocturnal seizures and focal epilepsy were associated with insomnia and poor sleep quality in men. For women, however, depression mood was the only factor of sleep disturbances.
Conclusions
Though no gender difference was observed in the incidence of sleep disturbances, factors contributing to insomnia and sleep quality were different by gender. The factors and gender differences of sleep disturbances should be taken into account in the clinical treatment.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study aims to examine associations between acculturative stress-defined as the psychological impact, or stress reaction, of adapting to a new cultural context-and self-reported sleep outcomes among Chinese and Korean immigrants in the United States. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, acculturative stress was assessed using a 9-item scale, and sleep disturbance was measured using the 8-item scale. Sleep duration was self-reported. Poisson and linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between acculturative stress, sleep disturbance, and sleep duration. RESULTS Our sample consists of 400 participants (females: 52%, Chinese: 50%, Koreans: 50%, the mean of age = 58.4). 81.8% of them were classified as having no sleep disturbance, whereas 18.2% were classified as having sleep disturbance. Poisson models revealed that greater acculturative stress was associated with a higher prevalence of sleep disturbance (Prevalence Ratio (PR): 1.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06% to 1.31%). In linear models, a one-unit increase in acculturative stress was associated with 0.08 hr less sleep (p < .05). Interaction tests indicated effect modification for sleep disturbance by sex and ethnic identity: only women had a significant association between acculturative stress and sleep disturbance (PR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.49), while the association was significant for individuals identifying as "very Asian" (PR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.35), but not for those identifying as "mostly Asian" or "bicultural/western". Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that some lifestyle-related behaviors are related to depressive symptoms, but the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents are still controversial. AIMS The aims of this study were to examine the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, and explored the potential influences of gender difference on these associations. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study among 3967 Chinese adolescents aged 11 to 19 from Jilin, China during September and October of 2018. Students reported their lifestyle factors including sleep duration, time spent on computer, time spent on television, time spent on homework, eating breakfast, smoking, drinking, physical activity, and outdoor activity. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 28.2% among Chinese adolescents. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that sleep duration <8 hour/day, time spent on homework ⩾3 hour/day, skipping breakfast, alcohol use, physical activity <3 days/week, and outdoor activity <2 hour/day were positively associated with depressive symptoms in both girls and boys. Time spent on computer ⩾2 hour/day was an independent risk predictor for depressive symptoms in males, while smoking only showed higher risk of depressive symptoms in females. There was an additive relationship between the lifestyle risk index scores and the risk of depressive symptoms for both genders, the relationship being strongest among females. CONCLUSION The important role of lifestyle factors should be taking into consideration when create intervention programs to prevent and reduce depressive symptoms among adolescents. In addition, preventive interventions may need to focus on gender-informed approaches when targeting multiple lifestyle factors.

Abstract
AIM The study aimed to investigate resilience and its association with early exposure to stressful events on the clinical manifestations of bipolar disorders (BDs), such as severity of mood symptoms, suicidal ideation and behaviors focusing on the possible role of insomnia symptoms. METHOD A sample of 188 adult participants with BD of type I or II were assessed during depressed phase using the Structural Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI). Participants with or without clinically significant insomnia were compared and we carried out correlations, regression and mediation analyses. RESULTS Participants with insomnia showed a greater severity of depressive symptoms as well as of suicidal risk, early life stressors and lower level of resilience. Insomnia symptoms mediated the association between early life stress and low resilience, between low resilience in planning future and depressive symptoms (Z = 2.17, p = 0.029) and low resilience and suicidal risk (Z = 3.05, p = 0.0002) CONCLUSION: Insomnia may be related to the severity of BDs, to higher early life stressors and lower level of resilience. Assessing and targeting insomnia symptoms may potentially promote resilience in BDs in response to early life stressful events. These results should be interpreted in light of several limitations including the cross-sectional design affecting causal interpretations.

Abstract
Sleep disruptions are frequently reported by persons with mood, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders, and co-occur with psychiatric disorders. There is evidence that sleep disorders can predict the likelihood of developing a future psychiatric disorder and exacerbate existing symptoms. Understanding the inter-relationships between sleep and psychiatric disorders is important. The primary goals of this article are to describe the interactions between psychiatric and sleep disorders in the context of sleep disturbances, underscore the bidirectional effects of mental health treatments on sleep disorder outcomes, and provide general recommendations to optimize treatment in the context of sleep disturbances.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although a considerable proportion of Asians in the USA experience depression, anxiety and poor sleep, these health issues have been underestimated due to the model minority myth about Asians, the stigma associated with mental illness, lower rates of treatment seeking and a shortage of culturally tailored mental health services. Indeed, despite emerging evidence of links between psychosocial risk factors, the gut microbiome and depression, anxiety and sleep quality, very few studies have examined how these factors are related in Chinese and Korean immigrants in the USA. The purpose of this pilot study was to address this issue by (a) testing the usability and feasibility of the study's multilingual survey measures and biospecimen collection procedure among Chinese and Korean immigrants in the USA and (b) examining how stress, discrimination, acculturation and the gut microbiome are associated with depression, anxiety and sleep quality in this population. METHOD AND ANALYSIS This is a cross-sectional pilot study among first and second generations of adult Chinese and Korean immigrants in the greater Atlanta area (Georgia, USA). We collected (a) gut microbiome samples and (b) data on psychosocial risk factors, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance using validated, online surveys in English, Chinese and Korean. We aim to recruit 60 participants (30 Chinese, 30 Korean). We will profile participants' gut microbiome using 16S rRNA V3-V4 sequencing data, which will be analysed by QIIME 2. Associations of the gut microbiome and psychosocial factors with depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including linear regression. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Emory University (IRB ID: STUDY00000935). Results will be made available to Chinese and Korean community members, the funder and other researchers and the broader scientific community.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effects of different psychotropic drugs on sleep architecture and sleep-related disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective review of 405 consecutive de-identified diagnostic polysomnograms performed at a sleep laboratory from 2007 until 2011, we grouped 347 polysomnograms into five categories: controls, antidepressants (AD), antidepressants + anticonvulsants (ADAC), antidepressants + antipsychotics (ADAP), antidepressants + anticonvulsants + antipsychotics (ADACP). We conducted pairwise comparisons for demographic characteristics, medical history, specific psychotropic medication uses and sleep architecture variables, and adjusted for multiple testing. We used logistic regression to determine the odds ratio of having elevated apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and periodic limb movement index (PLMI) within each group as compared to controls. RESULTS Compared to controls, all groups had a significantly higher prevalence of benzodiazepines and trazodone use. AD and ADACP had significantly longer REM latency and lower REM percentage of total sleep time compared to controls. ADAP had a significantly lower AHI compared to controls, but that association was lost in the regression model. AD was associated with a higher PLMI compared to controls. CONCLUSION Psychotropic polypharmacy does not seem to be associated with significantly deleterious effects on sleep architecture. Adjunct anticonvulsants or antipsychotics to antidepressants may protect against periodic limb movement disorder.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the impact of serious parental injury on adolescent sleep disorder diagnoses, outpatient care, and medication use. METHODS U.S. military personnel who sustained a serious injury and were parents of adolescents aged 10-18 years were identified. Included adolescents were enrolled in the Military Health System for 2 years before their parent's injury and 2 years after the injury. We used logistic regression clustered by adolescents to compare the odds of having a sleep diagnosis and negative binomial regression analysis clustered by adolescents to compare outpatient sleep disorder visits and sleep medication days before and after parental injury. RESULTS There were 96,318 parents seriously injured during 2004-2014 who had 117,577 children aged 10-18 years in 2002-2016. Approximately 2% of adolescents had a sleep disorder diagnosis, both before and after their parent's injury or illness. Outpatient sleep disorder visits increased 36% after a parent's injury (incidence rate ratio 1.36 [1.24-1.50]), with a twofold increase in insomnia visits (incidence rate ratio 2.35 [2.08-2.64]). Increases in sleep visits were most pronounced in adolescents of parents with traumatic brain injury, comorbid traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder, battle injury, and those who were medically discharged from the military. The number of adolescents using sleep medications increased, but sleep medication days did not increase. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents in our study used more outpatient medical care for sleep disorders; sleep medication use increased after parental injury. Sleep disorders should be considered in the care of adolescents with injured parents.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine the association between discrimination and sleep duration and difficulty among Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) in the United States, and to test nativity and ethnic identity (EI) as effect modifiers. METHODS This cross-sectional study of 1,765 adults from the National Epidemiology Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions III, assessed discrimination using the Experiences of Discrimination scale. Discrimimation was classified as low, moderate, and high. Regression models were used to examine self-reported sleep duration and difficulty. RESULTS In bivariate analyses, individuals with high discrimination had the shortest sleep and reported sleep difficulty most often. Using linear models adjusted for sociodemographic and health characteristics, moderate and high discrimination were associated with 9 minutes (standard error [SE]: 4.8, p <0.10) and 14.4 minutes (SE: 6.0, p <0.05) less sleep, respectively, relative to low discrimination. Individuals with moderate and high discrimination had higher prevalence of sleep difficulty compared to those with low discrimination (prevalence ratio [PR]: 1.51, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.99 and PR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.33-2.24, respectively). Interaction effect was observed in sleep difficulty by nativity and EI, but not duration. The association between discrimination and sleep difficulty was stronger among US-born relative to foreign-born participants. Among participants with low EI, moderate and high discrimination were associated with sleep difficulty, whereas among those with high EI, only high discrimination displayed this association. CONCLUSIONS Discrimination is associated with sleep duration and difficulty, and varies by nativity and EI. Research is needed to improve sleep among APIs that experience discrimination.[.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The few studies concerning the association between sleep disorders and functional dyspepsia (FD) have yielded inconsistent results. We compared the prevalence of sleep disorders in patients with FD and healthy controls, and evaluated whether FD was independently associated with sleep disorders, and the risk factors for sleep disorders in patients with FD. METHODS This prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2014 to December 2017 at 12 hospitals in South Korea. The inclusion criterion was the presence of FD (for ≥18 years) according to the Rome III criteria. Healthy controls were recruited from among patients who visited the Health Examination Center for check-ups. RESULTS In total, 526 subjects were prospectively enrolled in this study (201 with FD and 325 healthy controls). The prevalence of sleep disorders was significantly higher among the patients with FD than among the healthy controls (41.8% vs 18.8%, P = 0.000). In a multivariate analysis, FD (odds ratio [OR] = 1.851; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.194-2.870; P = 0.006), female sex (OR = 1.672; 95% CI 1.063-2.628; P = 0.026), and anxiety (OR = 3.325; 95% CI 2.140-5.166; P = 0.000) were independent risk factors for sleep disorders in the overall cohorts. In patients with FD only, low body mass index, heartburn, and anxiety were independent risk factors for sleep disorders in a further multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION Sleep disorders were common in patients with FD. FD was significantly associated with sleep disorders in our patient population, irrespective of the presence of heartburn or psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnant women often encounter psychiatric symptoms and declined sleep quality as pregnancy proceeds. The associations between sleep conditions and anxious and depressive symptoms among pregnant women remained to be investigated, particularly during the epidemic of COVID-19. METHODS An online cross-sectional survey on pregnant women was conducted at the time period of fast increasing cases of COVID-19 in Shenzhen. The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were applied to detect anxious and depressive symptoms. Multivariable logistic regressions models were established to explore the associations of sleep conditions with psychological symptoms. RESULTS In total, 751 pregnant women were enrolled, with a mean age of 30.51 years (Standard deviation: 4.28). Overall, 82.7% of the respondents considered low risk of being infected by COVID-19. The prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms during the epidemic of COVID-19 among pregnant women were 13.4% and 35.4%, respectively, but most of which were mild. Variables referred to poor sleep conditions were strongly associated with anxious and depressive symptoms, including random or late time of going to bed, difficulty in falling sleep, short sleep duration, and ordinary or poor subjective sleep quality. LIMITATIONS Non-random sample restricted generalization of our findings to the whole population of pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS Our research revealed a notable proportion of the pregnant women who exhibited mild anxiety and depression symptoms during the epidemic of COVID-19 in Shenzhen. Targeted interventions in improving sleep conditions might help alleviate gestational anxious and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Background: Neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of major depressive disorder (MDD) may differ depending on onset ages. Our aim was to determine whether regional homogeneity (ReHo) changes in early-onset depression (EOD) and late-onset depression (LOD) are different, which could also delineate EOD and LOD. Methods: Ninety-one MDD patients and 115 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. The ReHo comparison was conducted using analysis of variance. Results: Compared with HCs, MDD patients showed decreased ReHo in the left precentral gyrus and the left middle cingulum area, and increased ReHo in the left middle orbital frontal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus. Compared with LOD patients, young HC separately, EOD patients had significantly increased ReHo in the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus and the left postcentral gyrus. However, compared with young HC, EOD patients showed decreased ReHo in the right superior frontal gyrus/supplementary motor area and the right medial frontal gyrus. ReHo in the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus was negatively correlated with the severity of cognitive disturbance in LOD patients (r = -0.47, p = 0.002), but not in EOD patients (r = 0.21, p = 0.178). Conclusion: MDD patients with different onset ages may have different pathophysiological mechanisms; the EOD patients had more abnormal ReHo than LOD patients in the prefrontal lobe, especially the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 outbreak has made people more prone to depression, anxiety and insomnia, and females are at a high risk of developing these conditions. As a special group, pregnant and lying-in women must pay close attention to their physical and mental health, as both have consequences for the mother and the fetus. However, knowledge regarding the status of depression, anxiety and insomnia among these women is limited. AIM This study aimed to examine insomnia and psychological factors among pregnant and lying-in women during the COVID-19 pandemic and provide theoretical support for intervention research. METHODS In total, 2235 pregnant and lying-in women from 12 provinces in China were surveyed; their average age was 30.25 years (SD = 3.99, range = 19-47 years). PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING The participants completed electronic questionnaires designed to collect demographic information and assess levels of depression, anxiety and insomnia. RESULTS The prevalence of insomnia in the sample was 18.9%. Depression and anxiety were significant predictors of insomnia. Participants in high-risk areas, those with a disease history, those with economic losses due to the outbreak, and those in the postpartum period had significantly higher insomnia scores. DISCUSSION The incidence of insomnia among pregnant and lying-in women is not serious in the context of the epidemic, which may be related to the sociocultural background and current epidemic situation in China. CONCLUSION Depression and anxiety are more indicative of insomnia than demographic variables.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize published data on the prevalence, characteristics and diagnostic criteria of sleep disorders in epilepsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS A search of published articles was performed in Medline (Pubmed), Scopus, Web of Science and e-library databases. RESULTS Epidemiologic, clinical and diagnostic aspects of excessive daytime sleepiness, obstructive sleep apnea and central apnea, restless leg syndrome and parasomnias related to slow-wave and REM-sleep in patients with epilepsy were analyzed. CONCLUSIONS Further studies are needed to gain an insight into the complex associations of sleep disorders in epilepsy to optimize diagnostic and treatment approaches and to improve the quality of life in that patient population.

Abstract
Molecular cross talk between the nervous and vascular systems is necessary to maintain the correct coupling of organ structure and function. Molecular pathways shared by both systems are emerging as major players in the communication of the neuronal compartment with the endothelium. Here we review different aspects of this cross talk and how vessels influence the development and homeostasis of the nervous system. Beyond the classical role of the vasculature as a conduit to deliver oxygen and metabolites needed for the energy-demanding neuronal compartment, vessels emerge as powerful signaling systems that control and instruct a variety of cellular processes during the development of neurons and glia, such as migration, differentiation, and structural connectivity. Moreover, a broad spectrum of mild to severe vascular dysfunctions occur in various pathologies of the nervous system, suggesting that mild structural and functional changes at the neurovascular interface may underlie cognitive decline in many of these pathological conditions.

Better Objective Sleep Was Associated with Better Subjective Sleep and Physical Activity; Results from an Exploratory Study under Naturalistic Conditions among Persons with Multiple Sclerosis. Abstract
Persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) often complain about sleep problems. There is less known about objective sleep-electroencephalography (EEG) dimensions within naturalistic conditions (i.e., home and/or familiar setting). The present cross-sectional study examined the associations between objective and subjective sleep, depression, physical activity scores, and MS-related information among PwMS in their familiar setting. The sample consisted of 16 PwMS (mean age: 50.3 years; median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS): 5.5) who completed questionnaires covering subjective sleep (symptoms of insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep-disordered breathing), as well as daytime sleepiness, subjective physical activity, depression, and MS-related information (fatigue, EDSS; disease-modifying treatments). Objective sleep was assessed with a mobile sleep-EEG device under naturalist conditions within the home. Descriptively, better objective sleep patterns were associated with lower sleep complaints (rs = −0.51) and daytime sleepiness (rs = −0.43), and with lower symptoms of RLS (rs = −0.35), but not with sleep-disordered breathing (rs = −0.17). More deep sleep was associated with higher moderate physical activity levels (rs = 0.56). Objective sleep parameters were not associated with vigorous physical activity levels (rs < 0.25). Descriptively, moderate and vigorous physical activity scores were associated with lower symptoms of RLS (rs = −0.43 to −0.47). Results from this small study carried out under naturalistic conditions suggest that among PwMS, better objective sleep correlated with better subjective sleep and higher moderate physical activity levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorders are complex disorders involving the interaction of multiple factors. Affective temperaments, insomnia, and chronobiological rhythms desynchronization may all contribute to bipolar disorder. Since there is a paucity of research examining this topic we aimed to study how they are interrelated and collectively associated with clinical features of bipolar disorder. METHOD One-hundred patients with Bipolar Disorder type II depressive episode with and without mixed features were recruited and compared. Subjects were evaluated with SCID -5, the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Auto-questionnaire (TEMPS-A) while evaluating depressive (Beck Depression Inventory-BDI-II) and manic (Young Mania Rating Scale-YMRS) symptoms. Logistic regression and mediation analyses were conducted. RESULTS Subjects with mixed features showed a higher scores in both insomnia and chronobiological rhythms scores. When considering affective temperaments not only depressive, cyclothymic and irritable temperaments predicted mood symptoms but also insomnia (depressive symptoms O.R. 4.17, p = 0.043) and chronobiological sleep de-synchronization (manic symptoms O.R. 8.69, p = 0.001). Insomnia symptoms and chronobiological alterations mediated the association between affective temperaments and mood symptoms. LIMITATIONS the cross-sectional design limited any causal interpretation. CONCLUSION Subjects with mixed features showed a greater severity of insomnia and chronobiological rhythm de-synchronization compared to subjects without. Insomnia and chronobiological alterations may contribute to mood disorders together with affective temperaments in a complex interplay also mediating their effect on mood. Preventive strategies for bipolars should also act on the dysregulation of sleep and circadian rhythms.

Abstract
Clinical factors associated with daytime sleepiness and insomnia in persons with epilepsy (PWE) were examined in this cross-sectional study of 126 participants (men, 50.8%). Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS; score of ≥11 on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)) was noted in 17.5% of participants (mean score, 6.1 ± 4.2), and moderate-to-severe insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores of ≥15) was noted in 20.6% (mean score, 7.8 ± 6.4). Linear regression analyses revealed that ESS scores were independently associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA; snoring, tiredness, observed apnea, high blood pressure, body mass index, age, neck circumference, and gender (STOP-Bang) score of ≥3), an antiepileptic drug (AED) load of >3, depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score of ≥10), female sex, and nocturnal seizures. Insomnia Severity Indices were independently associated with depression and anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) score of ≥7). Notably, significant sex differences were found. Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores were associated with OSA in men but were associated with depression in women. In addition, anxiety was associated with insomnia in women only. Overall, OSA and depression were the most important significant clinical factors associated with daytime sleepiness and insomnia, respectively. However, there were sex differences for the associations between individual factors and sleep disturbances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individual dimensions of sleep health, including satisfaction, sleepiness/alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration, are associated with depression. We investigated whether a composite sleep health score is associated with symptoms of depression among Japanese female hospital nurses. METHODS Participants were nurses (n = 2482, all women, age 31.2 ± 8.9 years) working at three general hospitals in Tokyo, Japan. A cross-sectional survey, conducted in 2015, assessed self-reported sleep and symptoms of depression. Sleep health was categorized as "good" or "poor" across five dimensions: satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, efficiency, and duration. A composite sleep health score was calculated by summing the number of "poor" dimensions. Depression was defined by depressed mood, loss of interest, or at least one of those symptoms ("depression symptoms"). Associations between sleep health and symptoms of depression were evaluated with multivariate logistic regression analyses, adjusting for sociodemographic factors and hypnotic medication use. RESULTS In multivariate logistic regression analyses, sleep health symptoms of poor satisfaction, efficiency, and duration were significantly associated with depressed mood; daytime sleepiness and poor efficiency were significantly associated with loss of interest; and poor satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, and efficiency were significantly associated with having at least one depressive symptom. The composite sleep health score was associated in a graded fashion with greater odds of depression symptoms. CONCLUSION Individual and composite sleep health scores were associated with symptoms of depression. Assessing composite measures of multidimensional sleep health may help to better understand the well-known associations between poor sleep and depression and lead to improved intervention strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The multi-wave longitudinal study was to explore the underlying mechanisms between sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms for up to 9.5 months among student nurses and to examine whether emotional exhaustion and sleep-related worry could be the mediators. METHODS 856 student nurses aged 15-24 years (mean age = 17.8 years; all female) were recruited from a nursing school. Participants reported demographic variables (age, sibling, location, health condition, family monthly income and parents' marital quality) at baseline (Time1), Body Mass Index, weekly exercise, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms at 3-month into internship (Time2), emotional exhaustion and sleep-related worry at 6-month into internship (Time3), and depressive symptoms at 9.5-month follow-up (Time4). Mediation analyses with bootstrapping were conducted to investigate the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and sleep-related worry in the relationship between sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms. RESULTS Adjusted analyses suggested that the direct effect of sleep disturbance on depressive symptoms was not significant (β = 0.026, SE = 0.069, p = .71). Mediation analyses revealed two significant indirect effects between Time2 sleep disturbance and Time4 depressive symptoms with the mediating effect of emotional exhaustion (β = 0.019, SE = 0.009, BC95%CI [0.0036,0.0405]) and sleep-related worry (β = 0.016, SE = 0.008, BC95%CI [0.0026,0.0337]) respectively. When testing serial multiple mediation, the specific indirect effect of sleep disturbance on depressive symptoms through both emotional exhaustion and sleep-related worry was significant (β = 0.005, SE = 0.003, BC95%CI [0.0004,0.0123]). CONCLUSIONS Emotional exhaustion and sleep-related worry were positively associated with sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Later sleep timing, circadian preference, and circadian rhythm timing predict worse outcomes across multiple domains, including mood disorders, substance use, impulse control, and cognitive function. Disturbed sleep is common among pregnant and postpartum women. We examined whether sleep timing during third trimester of pregnancy predicted postpartum symptoms of mania, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fifty-one women with a previous, but not active, episode of unipolar or bipolar depression had symptoms evaluated and sleep recorded with wrist actigraphy at 33 weeks of gestation and 2, 6, and 16 weeks postpartum. Circadian phase was measured in a subset of women using salivary dim light melatonin onset (DLMO). We divided the sample into "early sleep" and "late sleep" groups using average sleep onset time at 33 weeks of gestation, defined by the median-split time of 11:27 p.m. The "late sleep" group reported significantly more manic and depressive symptoms at postpartum week 2. Longer phase angle between DLMO and sleep onset at 33 weeks was associated with more manic symptoms at postpartum week 2 and more obsessive-compulsive symptoms at week 6. Delayed sleep timing in this sample of at-risk women was associated with more symptoms of mania, depression, and OCD in the postpartum period. Sleep timing may be a modifiable risk factor for postpartum depression.

Abstract
High stress levels can influence sleep quality negatively. If this also applies to anticipatory stress is poorly documented, however. Across insomnia severity levels, this study examined participants' evening levels of (a) anticipatory stress and (b) their skills hypothesized to downregulate the impact of stress, namely openness to internal experiences and continuous engagement in meaningful activities (openness and engagement) and their association with the quality of the subsequent night's sleep. The moderating role of insomnia severity was also tested. We used a quasi-experimental longitudinal design with Experience Sampling Method using smartphones over the course of 1 week (3,976 assessments; 93.2% of prompted queries). Participants recorded their sleep quality, anticipatory stress, and openness and engagement within their daily context. Participants included in the study were diagnosed with major depressive disorder (n = 118), social phobia (n = 47) or belonged to the control group (n = 119). Both anticipatory stress and openness and engagement predicted subsequent sleep quality. Diagnostic group was associated with overall sleep quality, but did not interact with the predictors. These findings were invariant across levels of self-reported insomnia severity. Furthermore, openness and engagement and anticipatory stress did not interact in their effect on sleep quality. The results suggest that both stress reduction and increased openness and engagement are associated with improved subjective sleep quality on a day to day basis, regardless of insomnia severity. Targeting these variables may help improve sleep quality. Future research should disentangle the effects of openness and engagement on anticipatory stress.

Abstract
College students show high levels of insufficient sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep schedule irregularity, poor sleep quality, and inadequate sleep hygiene. This article describes the evidence linking poor sleep with impaired academic performance; discusses mediating environmental, behavioral, and demographic factors that correlate with sleep; and highlights examples of successful health promotion initiatives on college campuses. Given that students who are traditionally minoritized on college campuses tend to have worse sleep, improving sleep health emerges as an important issue for retention, equity, and inclusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in patients with major depressive disorder. We aimed to investigate the effects of vortioxetine on sleep quality and association between changes in sleep and treatment response. METHODS This study is a post-hoc analysis of a clinical trial that sought to evaluate the sensitivity to cognitive change of THINC-integrated tool in patients with major depressive disorder. In total, 92 patients (aged 18 to 65) meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria for moderate or severe major depressive disorder and 54 healthy controls were included. All patients received open-label vortioxetine (10-20 mg/day, flexibly dosed) for 8 weeks. Herein, the primary outcomes of interest were changes in sleep, as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Insomnia Severity Index, between weeks 0, 2, and 8. The association between changes in sleep and depressive symptom severity was secondarily assessed. RESULTS We observed that sleep, as indicated by scores of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Insomnia Severity Index, was significantly poorer in patients with major depressive disorder compared to healthy controls at weeks 0, 2, and 8 (p < 0.05). Among patients with major depressive disorder, we observed significant improvements on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Insomnia Severity Index between weeks 0 and 8 (p < 0.05). We observed a significant association between improvements on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Insomnia Severity Index and improvement of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Improvement of depressive symptoms in major depressive disorder patients treated with vortioxetine was associated with significant improvements in sleep. Furthermore, improvements in sleep were predictive of antidepressant response and were linearly correlated with improvement in overall depressive symptom severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A key feature of major depressive disorders is the lack of emotional processing such as empathy. To counter this, we tested, if brain stimulation on areas rich of mirror neurons on the left inferior parietal lobe (lIPL) might improve emotional processing, including empathy, compared to a standard brain stimulation on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC). METHODS Twenty inpatients (mean age: 38.9 years; 55% females) with severe major depressive disorders and stable treatment of sertraline at therapeutic dosages were randomly assigned to either the rTMS condition on areas of mirror neuron stimulation, that is, the left inferior parietal lobe (rTMS-lIPL), or to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rTMS-lDLPFC; control condition). Interventions lasted for two consecutive weeks (2 × 5 interventions of 30'). At baseline and at the end of the study, patients completed questionnaires on current mood state and emotion regulation. In parallel, experts rated patients' depression severity. RESULTS Mood improved over time, but more so in the control condition, compared to the rTMS-lIPL condition (medium-large effect sizes). Emotion regulation improved over time; specifically, empathy improved, but only in the rTMS-lIPL condition, compared to the control condition. Symptoms of depression decreased over time, but more so in the rTMS- lIPL condition. CONCLUSIONS The pattern of results suggests that among inpatients with severe major depressive disorders, and compared to a standard procedure of rTMS, rTMS targeting on areas rich of mirror neurons appeared to improve emotion regulation, and specifically empathy, while there was no advantage on acute mood.

Abstract
Sleep problems are considered a core symptom of depression. However, there is little information about the comorbidity of sleep problems and depression in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and whether sleep problems with depression confer additional risk for decrements in health compared to sleep problems alone. This study thus examined the association between sleep problems and depression and whether sleep problems with depression are associated with an increased risk for poorer health in 46 LMICs. Cross-sectional, community-based data from 237 023 adults aged ≥18 years from the World Health Survey (WHS) 2002–2004 were analyzed. Information on sleep problems (severe/extreme) and International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision depression/depression subtypes was collected. Multivariable logistic (binary and multinomial) and linear regression analyses were performed. Sleep problems were associated with subsyndromal depression (odds ratio [OR]: 2.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.84–2.70), brief depressive episode (OR = 2.48, 95% CI = 2.09–2.95) and depressive episode (OR = 3.61, 95% CI = 3.24–4.03). Sleep problems with depression (vs. sleep problems alone) conferred additional risk for anxiety, perceived stress and decrements in health in the domains of mobility, self-care, pain, cognition, and interpersonal activities. Clinicians should be aware that the co-occurrence of sleep problems and depression is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes in LMICs. Detecting this co-occurrence may be important for treatment planning.

Abstract
There has been no subsequent meta-analysis examining the effects of long working hours on health or occupational health since 1997. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct a meta-analysis covering studies after 1997 for a comparison. A total of 243 published records were extracted from electronic databases. The effects were measured by five conditions, namely, physiological health (PH), mental health (MH), health behaviours (HB), related health (RH), and nonspecified health (NH). The overall odds ratio between long working hours and occupational health was 1.245 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.195-1.298). The condition of related health constituted the highest odds ratio value (1.465, 95% CI: 1.332-1.611). The potential moderators were study method, cut-point for long weekly working hours, and country of origin. Long working hours were shown to adversely affect the occupational health of workers. The management on safeguarding the occupational health of workers working long hours should be reinforced.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Insomnia in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent and associated with increased suffering and functional impairment. Effective, evidence-based treatments for insomnia in MDD are an unmet need in clinical practice. AREAS COVERED Herein, the authors provide a review of the clinical correlates, putative neurobiological mechanisms and treatment options for the management of insomnia in individuals with MDD. EXPERT OPINION Sleep disturbances in MDD should be recognized as at least one of the following: (1) a domain of depressive psychopathology; (2) a consequence of rhythm disruptions; (3) a manifestation of comorbidities of sleep disturbances; (4) a manifestation of the influence of sex hormones in the brain in MDD; (5) a general medical comorbidity; and (6) a side effect of antidepressant medications. Assessment of insomnia in clinical practices is routinely performed with the use of non-structured interviews. Other methods such as standardized questionnaires and sleep diaries, along with complementary methods such as actigraphy and polysomnography are more scarcely applied. Smartphones and personal devices offer a promising strategy with the use of passive, long lasting, and ecologically valid assessments despite the lack of studies specifically targeting insomnia in individuals with MDD. New therapeutic approaches are essential, including novel targets such as orexins/hypocretins and the endocannabinoid system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to understand the relationship between affective temperaments and insomnia symptoms and to examine mood state as a mediator in this relationship. PARTICIPANTS The sample consisted of 659 adults (428 women and 231 men), aged 18-77 years old, derived from a nonclinical population. METHODS Affective temperaments were assessed using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). Mood was measured using the UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist (UMACL). Insomnia was evaluated by the Athens Insomnia Scale. RESULTS We found positive correlations among anxious, cyclothymic, depressive, and irritable affective temperaments and insomnia symptoms. Negative correlation with insomnia symptoms was found for hyperthymic temperament. Energetic arousal and tense arousal, as mood dimensions, positively correlated with insomnia symptoms. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that anxious, cyclothymic, and hyperthymic temperaments were significant predictors of insomnia symptoms. Mediation analyses indicated that anxious, cyclothymic, and hyperthymic temperaments affected insomnia symptoms, both directly and indirectly, through energetic arousal as a mediator. CONCLUSIONS The results showed a relationship between affective temperaments and insomnia symptoms and included the role of energetic arousal, a mood state dimension, as a mediator.

Abstract
Sleep restriction has been proposed to cause impaired emotional processing and emotional regulation by inhibiting top-down control from prefrontal cortex to amygdala. Intentional emotional regulation after sleep restriction has, however, never been studied using brain imaging. We aimed here to investigate the effect of partial sleep restriction on emotional regulation through cognitive reappraisal. Forty-seven young (age 20-30) and 33 older (age 65-75) participants (38/23 with complete data and successful sleep intervention) performed a cognitive reappraisal task during fMRI after a night of normal sleep and after restricted sleep (3 h). Emotional downregulation was associated with significantly increased activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (p FWE < 0.05) and lateral orbital cortex (p FWE < 0.05) in young, but not in older subjects. Sleep restriction was associated with a decrease in self-reported regulation success to negative stimuli (p < 0.01) and a trend towards perceiving all stimuli as less negative (p = 0.07) in young participants. No effects of sleep restriction on brain activity nor connectivity were found in either age group. In conclusion, our data do not support the idea of a prefrontal-amygdala disconnect after sleep restriction, and neural mechanisms underlying behavioural effects on emotional regulation after insufficient sleep require further investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mood disorders are among the most prevalent and serious mental disorders and rank high among to the leading global burdens of disease. The developmental psychopathology framework can offer a life course perspective on them thus providing a basis for early prevention and intervention. Sleep disturbances, are considered risk factors for mood disorders across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Assuming that sleep disturbances may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of mood disorders from a life course point of view, we reviewed the data on developmental pathways towards mood disorders in adult life in relation to sleep disturbances. METHOD From February 2017, a systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase electronic databases for literature on developmental pathways to mood disorders in adult life in relation to sleep disturbances and to 1) pre-natal stress, 2) early brain developmental processes, and 3) temperaments, character and attachment style. RESULTS Eleven, 54 and 15 articles were respectively selected. CONCLUSIONS Experimental and clinical studies revealed that exposure to prenatal/early life stress results in sleep disturbances such as poor sleep and altered circadian regulation phases and may predict or even precipitate mood disorders in adulthood. Chronic sleep disruption may interfere with neuronal plasticity, connectivity and the developing brain thus contributing to the development of mood disorders. In addition sleep and circadian dysregulations have been shown to be related to those temperaments, character and attachment styles which are considered precursors of mood disorders. Sleep and circadian behaviours may serve as early targets regarding mood disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We determined factors contributing to excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in Korean adults with epilepsy (AWE). METHODS A total of 147 AWE who had been treated for >1 year were included. Daytime sleepiness was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Subjective sleep disturbances were assessed with the Sleep Apnea of Sleep Disorder Questionnaire (SA-SDQ) and questionnaires about insomnia and restless legs syndrome (RLS). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was also used. An ESS score >10 was considered indicative of EDS. Multivariate logistic regression analyses using the backward elimination method were performed for variables with a p < 0.10 on univariate analysis. RESULTS The mean ESS score was 6.8 (standard deviation [SD]: 4.4). Among the 147 subjects, 36 (24.5%) had EDS. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that being employed (odds ratio [OR]: 4.469, p < 0.01), the presence of at least one sleep disturbance (OR: 3.626, p < 0.01), and antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy (OR: 2.663, p < 0.05) were independently associated with EDS in the overall group of AWE. In contrast, being employed (p < 0.05) and higher Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety subscale (HADS-A) scores (p < 0.05) in a model for men with epilepsy, as well as having at least one sleep disturbance (p < 0.05) in a model for women with epilepsy, were identified as independent factors for EDS. CONCLUSIONS Excessive daytime sleepiness in AWE may have a multifactorial origin. Being employed, subjective sleep disturbances, and AED polytherapy are independent predictors of EDS. There may be sex differences in factors associated with EDS.
