Abstract
BackgroundExposure to zinc was suggested to be associated with pulmonary damage, but whether zinc exposure affects lung function remains unclear.ObjectivesTo quantify the association between urinary zinc and lung function and explore the potential mechanisms.MethodsUrinary zinc and lung function were measured in 3917 adults from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort and were repeated after 3 years of follow-up. Indicators of systemic inflammation (C reactive protein), lung epithelium integrity (club cell secretory protein-16) and oxidative damage (8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine and 8-isoprostane) were measured at baseline. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the exposure–response relationship between urinary zinc and lung function. Mediation analyses were conducted to assess mediating roles of inflammation and oxidative damage in above relationships.ResultsEach 1-unit increase in log-transformed urinary zinc values was associated with a 35.72 mL decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC) and a 24.89 mL decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) in the baseline analyses. In the follow-up analyses, there was a negative association between urinary zinc and FVC among participants with persistent high urinary zinc levels, with an estimated change of −93.31 mL (95% CI −178.47 to −8.14). Furthermore, urinary zinc was positively associated with restrictive ventilatory impairment. The mediation analyses suggested that C reactive protein mediated 8.62% and 8.71% of the associations of urinary zinc with FVC and FEV1, respectively.ConclusionUrinary zinc was negatively associated with lung function, and the systemic inflammation may be one of the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Metal exposures could possibly affect allergic responses in pregnant women, although no studies have yet shown a clear relationship between the two, and such exposures might also affect the development of allergic diseases in children. Methods We investigated the relationship between metal concentrations in whole blood and immunoglobulin E (IgE; total and specific) in 14,408 pregnant women who participated in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study. The subjects submitted self-administered questionnaires, and blood samples were collected from them twice, specifically, during the first trimester and again during the second/third trimester. Concentrations of the metals Cd, Pb, Hg, Se, and Mn, as well as serum total and allergen-specific IgEs for egg white, house dust-mites (HDM), Japanese cedar pollen (JCP), animal dander, and moth, were measured. Allergen-specific IgE(s) were divided based on concentrations <0.35 or ≥0.35 UA/mL, and the metal levels were divided into quartiles. Results Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that there was a significant negative correlation between HDM- and animal dander-specific IgEs and Hg and Mn concentrations. Conversely, there was a significant positive relationship between JCP-specific IgE and Hg and Se concentrations. Conclusions Metal exposures may be related to both increases and decreases in allergen-specific IgEs in pregnant women.

Abstract
Experimental studies in animals and observational studies in occupationally exposed adults indicate that higher lead exposure results in higher biomarkers of oxidative stress. However, this evidence cannot be extended to the general population who typically experience lower levels of lead exposure. This systematic review evaluates the epidemiological evidence on the association between lead and oxidative stress in non-occupationally exposed general population, with a particular focus on the pediatric population. Studies were identified through a systematic search of Medline and Web of Science. Ultimately, evidence from 15 studies conducted in children and 22 studies in adults from the general population was reviewed. Overall, the published findings are inconsistent, and there are very few well-designed studies on the relation between lead exposure and oxidative stress in the general population. The strength of the current evidence is discussed in light of the methodological approaches employed, and recommendations are made for future research directions. These include designing prospective studies with repeat measurements of clinically relevant oxidative stress markers to answer the question of causality and sensitive windows and reanalyzing previously published data, but using multivariable statistical approaches and adjustment for relevant explanatory factors.

Abstract
We evaluated the effect of lead (Pb) abatement measures in Croatia on blood lead (BPb) concentrations, and delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in blood, as a sensitive indicator of early Pb effect. Data on BPb and ALAD activity were obtained from 829 Croatian men (19-64 years of age), with no known occupational exposure to metals. Data obtained in 2008-2009, after the ban of leaded gasoline in Croatia in 2006, were compared with similar data collected in 1981 and 1989, when the concentration of Pb in gasoline was 0.6 g/L. Our results showed a highly significant (p < 0.001) decrease in median BPb from 114.5 (range, 46.0-275.0) μg/L in 1981/1989 to 30.3 (range, 3.2-140.8) μg/L in 2008-2009 and an increase in median ALAD activity from 49.8 (range, 24.9-79.4) EU in 1981/1989 to 60.9 (range, 35.8-84.0) EU in 2008-2009. Individual factors influencing BPb values were, in the order of decreasing importance, Pb in ambient air (APb), alcohol consumption, age, and smoking. Increased ALAD activity was significantly associated with the decrease of APb, alcohol consumption, and smoking. These results show that lead abatement measures had a positive impact on both BPb concentrations (73.5% decrease) and the activity of ALAD (22.1% increase) in general population. Our results contribute to growing evidence that ALAD activity may be used as one of the earliest and sensitive diagnostic biomarkers of low-level Pb exposure.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study aimed at evaluation of selected spirometric parameters in persons occupationally exposed to lead without evident health problems. The studies were conducted on 69 men occupationally exposed to lead. Occupational exposure to lead was characterized by estimation of blood lead concentration (Pb-B) and blood zinc protoporphyrin concentration (ZnPP). Function of respiratory system was examined using spirometric analysis with evaluation of its basic parameters: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume (in 1s) (FEV1), Tiffeneau index (FEV1%VC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF). In the study group negative linear correlations were documented between Pb-B and FVC, FEV 1 and FEV1%VC. A more pronounced age, higher values of BMI and higher blood lead concentration constituted independent risk factors for reduced FEV1%VC. CONCLUSION Persons occupationally exposed to lead with elevated blood lead concentration and blood zinc protoporphyrin concentration manifested the impaired function of respiratory system, evaluated using parameters of spirometry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether concentrations of several trace elements and activities of several antioxidant enzymes are modified in metabolic syndrome, and to evaluate their possible association with metabolic syndrome components. Additionally, concentration of CRP, as a marker of inflammation, was measured. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS The study group consisted of 100 subjects, aged 71-88 years. MEASUREMENTS Anthropometric measurements and biochemical analyses of fasting blood samples were performed by standardized methods. According to the International Diabetic Federation (IDF) criteria, metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 64 subjects. Whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GPx), erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), serum selenium (SSe), copper (SCu) and zinc (SZn), glucose, lipoprotein profile and C-reactive protein (CRP) were determined in all subjects. RESULTS No clear influence of metabolic syndrome on SSe, SZn and SCu concentration and SOD and CAT activity was found. However, significantly higher GPx was found in subjects with metabolic syndrome than in subjects without metabolic syndrome (p=0.029), as well as in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia than in control subjects (p=0.038). After adjusting for potentially confounding variables by multiple regression, significant positive relationship between SCu and CRP was found, indicating that elevated levels of Cu could have influence on inflammatory mechanisms. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that GPx and CRP, as biomarkers of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, respectively, have significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Recently, it has become clear that the complexity of environmental health issues requires an approach that takes into account the complexities, interdependencies and uncertainties of the real world. An urgent issue that has surfaced is the need for accurate tools to better describe exposure characterization to environmental chemicals. By including human biomonitoring (HBM) data, a greater precision in exposure and associated risk estimates and more accurate dose-response relationships may be achieved. A restricting issue still is the availability of reliable and comparable HBM data. The aim of the current study was twofold: (1) to find out whether it is practically feasible to collect raw, individual HBM data across Europe; and (2) to evaluate the comparability and use of these HBM data for environmental health impact assessment at a European scale. Blood-lead (B-Pb) was selected as the chemical of choice because of its long history as an environmental pollutant in HBM programs and its known public health relevance. Through literature search and identification of HBM experts across Europe, HBM programs that measured B-Pb were identified and asked to share individual data on age, gender and B-Pb levels. Following this request, more than 20,000 individual data points from 8 European countries were collected. Analysing these data made clear that it is difficult to use disparate data collections because of the inherent variability with respect to the gender and age of participants and calendar-years sampled. When these confounders were taken however, there was no additional variability in B-Pb distributions among different countries. It was concluded that while it is possible to collect HBM data from different sources across Europe, the need to get data from comparable (sub-)populations is essential for appropriate use and interpretation of HBM data for environmental health impact assessment.
