Research progress on the generation of NDMA by typical PPCPs in disinfection treatment of water environment in China: A review

The drugs and personal care products in water sources are potential threats to the ecological environment and drinking water quality. In recent years, the presence of PPCPs has been detected in multiple drinking water sources in China. PPCPs are usually stable and resistant to degradation in aquatic environments. During chlorination, chloramination, and ozonation disinfection processes, PPCPs can act as precursor substances to generate N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) which is the most widely detected nitrosamine byproduct in drinking water. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of PPCPs in China's water environment on the generation of NDMA during disinfection processes to better understand the correlation between PPCPs and NDMA generation. Chloramine is the most likely to form NDMA with different disinfection methods, so chloramine disinfection may be the main pathway for NDMA generation. Activated carbon adsorption and UV photolysis are widely used in the removal of NDMA and its precursor PPCPs, and biological treatment is found to be a low-cost and high removal rate method for controlling the generation of NDMA. However, there are still certain regional limitations in the investigation and research on PPCPs, and other nitrosamine by-products such as NMEA, NDEA and NDBA should also be studied to investigate the formation mechanism and removal methods.

A large-scale survey of urinary parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese population as well as the influencing factors and health risks

Parabens and triclocarban are widely applied as antimicrobial preservatives in foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products. However, few studies have been conducted on large-scale biomonitoring of parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese general population. In the present study, there were 1157 urine samples collected from 26 Chinese provincial capitals for parabens and triclocarban measurement to evaluate the exposure levels, spatial distribution, and influencing factors, as well as associated health risks in the Chinese population. The median concentrations of Σparabens and triclocarban were 14.0 and 0.03 μg/L, respectively. Methyl paraben was the predominant compound. Subjects in western China were more exposed to parabens, possibly due to climate differences resulting in higher consumption of personal care products. Subjects who were female, aged 18-44 years, or had a higher education level were found to have higher paraben concentrations. The frequency of drinking bottled water was positively associated with paraben exposure. The assessment of health risk based on urinary paraben concentrations indicated that 0.8 % of the subjects had a hazard index exceeding one unit, while Monte Carlo analysis suggested that 3.6 % of the Chinese population exposure to parabens had a potential non-carcinogenic risk. This large-scale biomonitoring study will help to understand the exposure levels of parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese general population and provide supporting information for government decision-making.

Electrochemical degradation of diclofenac generates unexpected thyroidogenic transformation products: Implications for environmental risk assessment

Diclofenac (DCF) is an environmentally persistent, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with thyroid disrupting properties. Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (eAOPs) can efficiently remove NSAIDs from wastewater. However, eAOPs can generate transformation products (TPs) with unknown chemical and biological characteristics. In this study, DCF was electrochemically degraded using a boron-doped diamond anode. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to analyze the TPs of DCF and elucidate its potential degradation pathways. The biological impact of DCF and its TPs was evaluated using the Xenopus Eleutheroembryo Thyroid Assay, employing a transgenic amphibian model to assess thyroid axis activity. As DCF degradation progressed, in vivo thyroid activity transitioned from anti-thyroid in non-treated samples to pro-thyroid in intermediately treated samples, implying the emergence of thyroid-active TPs with distinct modes of action compared to DCF. Molecular docking analysis revealed that certain TPs bind to the thyroid receptor, potentially triggering thyroid hormone-like responses. Moreover, acute toxicity occurred in intermediately degraded samples, indicating the generation of TPs exhibiting higher toxicity than DCF. Both acute toxicity and thyroid effects were mitigated with a prolonged degradation time. This study highlights the importance of integrating in vivo bioassays in the environmental risk assessment of novel degradation processes.

Ecological and human health risk assessment of pharmaceutical compounds in the Sirsa River of Indian Himalayas

The Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) region of Indian Himalayas is one of the most important pharmaceutical industrial clusters in Asia. This study investigated the distribution, and ecological and human health risks of four most frequently used pharmaceuticals [ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), cetirizine (CTZ) and citalopram oxalate (ECP)] when co-occurring with metal ions in the Sirsa river water of the BBN region. The concentration range of the selected pharmaceuticals was between 'not detected' to 50 μgL-1 with some exception for CIP (50-100 μgL-1) and CTZ (100-150 μgL-1) in locations directly receiving wastewater discharges. A significant correlation was found between the occurrences of NOR and Al (r2 = 0.65; p = 0.01), and CTZ and K (r2 = 0.50; p = 0.01) and Mg (r2 = 0.50; p = 0.01). A high-level ecological risk [risk quotient (RQ) > 1] was observed for algae from all the pharmaceuticals. A medium-level risk (RQ = 0.01-0.1) was observed for Daphnia from CIP, NOR and ECP, and a high-level risk from CTZ. A low-level risk was observed for fishes from CIP and NOR, whereas CTZ and ECP posed a high-level risk to fishes. The overall risk to ecological receptors was in the order: CTZ > CIP > ECP > NOR. Samples from the river locations receiving water from municipal drains or situated near landfill and pharmaceutical factories exhibited RQ > 1 for all pharmaceuticals. The average hazard quotient (HQ) values for the compounds followed the order: CTZ (0.18) > ECP (0.15) > NOR (0.001) > CIP (0.0003) for children (0-6 years); ECP (0.49) > CTZ (0.29) > NOR (0.005) > CIP (0.001) for children (7-17 years), and ECP (0.34) > CTZ (0.21) > NOR (0.007) > CIP (0.001) for adults (>17 years). The calculated risk values did not readily confirm the status of water as safe or unsafe because the values of predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) would depend on various other environmental factors such as quality of the toxicity data, and species sensitivity and distribution, which warrants further research.

Synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite based polymeric membrane (PES/PVP/GO-TiO2) and performance evaluation for the removal of various antibiotics (amoxicillin, azithromycin & ciprofloxacin) from aqueous solution

The escalating global concern regarding antibiotic pollution necessitates the development of advanced water treatment strategies. This study presents an innovative approach through the fabrication and evaluation of a Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane adorned with GO-TiO2 nanocomposites. The objective is to enhance the removal efficiency of various antibiotics, addressing the challenge of emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in water systems. The nanocomposite membranes, synthesized via the phase inversion method, incorporate hydrophilic agents, specifically GO-TiO2 nanocomposites and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The resultant membranes underwent comprehensive characterization employing AFM, EDS, tensile strength testing, water contact angle measurements, and FESEM to elucidate their properties. Analysis revealed a substantial improvement in the hydrophilicity of the modified membranes attributed to the presence of hydroxyl groups within the GO-TiO2 structure. AFM images demonstrated an augmentation in surface roughness with increasing nanocomposite content. FESEM images unveiled structural modifications, leading to enhanced porosity and augmented water flux. The pure water flux elevated from 0.980 L/m2.h-1 for unmodified membranes to approximately 6.85 L/m2.h-1 for membranes modified with 2 wt% nanocomposites. Membrane performance analysis indicated a direct correlation between nanocomposite content and antibiotic removal efficiency, ranging from 66.52% to 89.81% with 4 wt% nanocomposite content. Furthermore, the nanocomposite-modified membrane exhibited heightened resistance to fouling. The efficacy of the membrane extended to displaying potent antibacterial properties against microbial strains, including S. aureus, E. coli, and Candida. This study underscores the immense potential of GO-TiO2 decorated PES membranes as a sustainable and efficient solution for mitigating antibiotic contamination in water systems. The utilization of nanocomposite membranes emerges as a promising technique to combat the presence of EOC pollutants, particularly antibiotics, in water bodies, thus addressing a critical environmental concern.

Nabumetone and flufenamic acid pose a serious risk to aquatic plants: A study with Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model organism

The aquatic environment is constantly under threat due to the release of numerous pollutants. Among them, pharmaceuticals constitute a huge and diverse group. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are increasingly found in water bodies, but knowledge about their potential toxicity is still low. In particular, there is a lack of information about their influences on aquatic plants and algae. We estimated the susceptibility of the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to nabumetone (NBT) and flufenamic acid (FFA), focusing on photosynthesis. Due to the differences in the structures of these compounds, it was assumed that these drugs would have different toxicities to the tested green algae. The hypothesis was confirmed by determining the effective concentration values, the intensity of photosynthesis, the intensity of dark respiration, the contents of photosynthetic pigments, the fluorescence of chlorophyll a in vivo (OJIP test), and cell ultrastructure analysis. Assessment of the toxicity of the NSAIDs was extended by the calculation of an integrated biomarker response index (IBR), which is a valuable tool in ecotoxicological studies. The obtained results indicate an over six times higher toxicity of NBT compared to FFA. After analysis of the chlorophyll a fluorescence in vivo, it was found that NBT inhibited electron transport beyond the PS II. FFA, unlike NBT, lowered the intensity of photosynthesis, probably transforming some reaction centers into "silent centers", which dissipate energy as heat. The IBR estimated based on photosynthetic parameters suggests that the toxic effect of FFA results mainly from photosynthesis disruption, whereas NBT significantly affects other cellular processes. No significant alteration in the ultrastructure of treated cells could be seen, except for changes in starch grain number and autophagic vacuoles that appeared in FFA-treated cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work reporting the toxic effects of NBT and FFA on unicellular green algae.

The occurrence and probabilistic risk of exposure to parabens from bottled and hand-shaken teas in the general adult population of Taiwan

Parabens (PBs) are esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and there are growing concerns due to their potential to disrupt endocrine function and their wide use as preservatives in foodstuffs, including beverages. The consumption of bottled and hand-shaken teas is gradually replacing traditional tea consumption through brewing. However, no study has reported PB concentrations in different types of teas or packaging and their associated health risks. Our aim was to determine the concentration of PBs (methyl- (MetPB), ethyl- (EthPB), propyl- (PropPB), butyl-paraben (ButPB)) in green, black, and oolong teas in two varieties of products (bottled and hand-shaken teas), using UPLC-MS/MS. Additionally, we estimated the health risks associated with tea consumption in the general adult population of Taiwan. A Monte Carlo simulation was applied to estimate the distribution of daily PB intake through bottled (n = 79) and hand-shaken (n = 71) tea consumption. Our findings revealed geometric mean concentrations in bottled green/black/oolong teas were 714.1/631.2/532.1 ng/L for MetPB, 95.2/ 30.5/14.9 ng/L for EthPB, 77.9/28.3/non-detected (ND) ng/L for PropPB, and 69.3/26.6/ND ng/L for ButPB. Hand-shaken green/black/oolong teas exhibited concentrations of 867.5/2258/1307 ng/L for MetPB, 28.5/28.8/14.5 ng/L for EthPB, 25.4/18.3/17.8 ng/L for PropPB, and 30.3/18.0/15.5 ng/L for ButPB. The median MetPB concentrations in hand-shaken black (2333 ng/L) and oolong teas (1215 ng/L) were significantly higher than those in bottled black (595.4 ng/L) and oolong teas (489.3 ng/L). Conversely, median concentrations of EthPB, PropPB, and ButPB in bottled teas were significantly higher than those in hand-shaken teas. MetPB was the predominant PB, constituting 73.2-91.9% in bottled teas and 85-94% in hand-shaken teas. Our results showed no health risks associated with bottled or hand-shaken tea consumption based on reference doses. However, the study highlights the importance of continued vigilance given the potential chronic exposure to PBs from various sources, necessitating ongoing concern despite the absence of immediate risks from tea consumption.

Mapping chemical footprints of organic micropollutants in European streams

There is increasing awareness that chemical pollution of freshwater systems with complex mixtures of chemicals from domestic sources, agriculture and industry may cause a substantial chemical footprint on water organisms, pushing aquatic ecosystems outside the safe operating space. The present study defines chemical footprints as the risk that chemicals or chemical mixtures will have adverse effects on a specific group of organisms. The aim is to characterise these chemical footprints in European streams based on a unique and uniform screening of more than 600 chemicals in 445 surface water samples, and to derive site- and compound-specific information for management prioritisation purposes. In total, 504 pesticides, biocides, pharmaceuticals and other compounds have been detected, including frequently occurring and site-specific compounds with concentrations up to 74 µg/L. Key finding is that three-quarter of the investigated sites in 22 European river basins exceed established thresholds for chemical footprints in freshwater, leading to expected acute or chronic impacts on aquatic organisms. The largest footprints were recorded on invertebrates, followed by algae and fish. More than 70 chemicals exceed thresholds of chronic impacts on invertebrates. For all organism groups, pesticides and biocides were the main drivers of chemical footprints, while mixture impacts were particularly relevant for invertebrates. No clear significant correlation was found between chemical footprints and the urban discharge fractions, suggesting that effluent-specific quality rather than the total load of treated wastewater in the aquatic environment and the contribution of diffuse sources, e.g. from agriculture, determine chemical footprints.

Parabens as environmental contaminants of aquatic systems affecting water quality and microbial dynamics

Among different pollutants of emerging concern, parabens have gained rising interest due to their widespread detection in water sources worldwide. This occurs because parabens are used in personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and food, in which residues are generated and released into aquatic environments. The regulation of the use of parabens varies across different geographic regions, resulting in diverse concentrations observed globally. Concentrations of parabens exceeding 100 μg/L have been found in wastewater treatment plants and surface waters while drinking water (DW) sources typically exhibit concentrations below 6 μg/L. Despite their low levels, the presence of parabens in DW is a potential exposure route for humans, raising concerns for both human health and environmental microbiota. Although a few studies have reported alterations in the functions and characteristics of microbial communities following exposure to emerging contaminants, the impact of the exposure to parabens by microbial communities, particularly biofilm colonizers, remains largely understudied. This review gathers the most recent information on the occurrence of parabens in water sources, as well as their effects on human health and aquatic organisms. The interactions of parabens with microbial communities are reviewed for the first time, filling the knowledge gaps on the effects of paraben exposure on microbial ecosystems and their impact on disinfection tolerance and antimicrobial resistance, with potential implications for public health.

Short-term impacts of a large cultural event on the microbial pollution status of a pre-alpine river

Rivers are impacted by microbial faecal pollution from various sources. We report on a short-term faecal pollution event at the pre-alpine Austrian river Traisen caused by the large cultural event FM4 Frequency music festival, with around 200,000 visitors over 4 days. We observed a massive increase of the faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) intestinal enterococci during the event, while Escherichia coli concentrations were only slightly elevated. This increase poses a significant potential health threat to visitors and people recreating downstream of the festival area. A plausible explanation for the uncoupling of the two FIBs may have been a differential persistence caused by a combination of factors including water temperature, solar radiation, and the excessive presence of personal care products (PCPs) in the river water. However, a potential impact of PCPs on FIB assay performance cannot be ruled out. Our observations are relevant for other intensively used bathing sites; detailed investigations on persistence and assay performance of the FIB in response to different ingredients of PCPs are highly recommended. We conclude that for future festivals at this river or other festivals taking place under similar settings, a more effective management is necessary to reduce deterioration in water quality and minimise health risks.

Toxicity of benzyl paraben on aquatic as well as terrestrial life

Parabens are derivatives of alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and come in different classes. These compounds are primarily used as antimicrobial preservative agents in many commercial products, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Accordingly, Benzyl paraben (BeP) is known to be a potential endocrine disruptor. The aim of this study was to determine the toxicity of benzyl paraben (BeP) on aquatic and terrestrial organisms, specifically Scenedesmus sp., Moina macrocopa, and Eisenia fetida. All the organisms were treated with different concentrations of BeP (0.025 mg/L and 1000 mg/L), and LC25, LC50, and LC90 values were used to measure the toxicity levels. Results showed the LC values of BeP for M. macrocopa (3.3 mg/L, 4.7 mg/L, 7.3 mg/L) and E. fetida (173.2 mg/L, 479.8 mg/L, 1062 mg/L), respectively. Toxicity tests on green algae (Scenedesmus sp.) were conducted, the green algae were subjected to various BeP concentration. At 50 mg/L of BeP, cell viability was reduced to 56.2% and the MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay indicated 35.4% viable cells. The chlorophyll value and the biochemical parameters of the algal cells were corroborative with the cell viability test. Lethal indices (LC50) for M. macrocopa and E. fetida were evaluated for their toxicity on biochemical properties and were found to be catalase (0.111 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L), lipid peroxidation (0.072 mg/L, 0.056 mg/L), and total protein (0.309 mg/L, 0.314 mg/L), respectively. Overall, this study demonstrated the toxic impact of BeP on non-target aquatic as well as terrestrial species.

Toxicological effects of diclofenac on signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) as related to weakly acidic and basic water pH

The widespread use and continuous discharge of pharmaceuticals to environmental waters can lead to potential toxicity to aquatic biota. Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites are often complex organic and environmentally persistent compounds that are bioactive at low doses. This study aimed to investigate the effects of diclofenac (DCF) on the antioxidant defence system and neurotoxicity biomarkers in signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) under weakly acidic and basic conditions. Crayfish were exposed to 200 µg/L of DCF at pH 6 and 8 for 96 h and subsequently underwent the depuration phase for 96 h. Gills, hepatopancreas, and muscle were sampled after the exposure and depuration phases to assess the toxicological biomarker responses of DCF in crayfish by evaluating lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels, activities of antioxidant enzymes and acetylcholinesterase. After the exposure phase, the hemolymph DCF concentration was detected one order higher at pH 6 than at pH 8. The DCF was subsequently fully eliminated from the hemolymph during the depuration phase. Our results showed that DCF caused alteration in the activities of six of the seven tested biomarkers in at least one crayfish tissue. Although exposure to DCF caused imbalances in the detoxification system on multiple tissue levels, it was regenerated to a balanced state after the depuration phase. Integrated biomarker response (IBRv2) showed that the highest toxicological response to DCF exposure was elicited in the gills, whereas the hepatopancreas was the highest-responding tissue after the depuration phase. Exposure to DCF at pH 6 caused higher toxicological effects than at pH 8; however, crayfish antioxidant mechanisms recovered more quickly at pH 6 than at pH 8 after the depuration phase. Our results showed that water pH influenced the toxicological effects of DCF, an ionisable compound in crayfish.

Optimization and validation of an extraction method for the analysis of multi-class emerging contaminants in soil and sediment

Analytical methods for the determination of multi-class emerging contaminants are limited for soil and sediment while they are essential to provide a more complete picture of their distribution in the environment and to understand their fate in different environmental compartments. In this paper, we present the development and optimization of an analytical strategy that combines reliable extraction, purification and the analysis using ultra-pressure liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) of 90 emerging organic contaminants including pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and plasticizers in soil and sediment. To extract a wide range of chemicals, the extraction strategy is based on the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) approach. A number of different options were investigated (buffer, acidification, addition of EDTA, different types and combinations of dispersive SPE etc.) and the effectiveness of the chemical extraction procedure and the clean-up was assessed for two matrices: soil (organic matter content of 9%) and sediment (organic matter content of 1.9%). The method was fully validated for both matrices, in terms of accuracy, linearity, repeatability (intra-day), reproducibility (inter-day), method limits of detection and quantification (LODs and MLOQs, respectively). The final performance showed good accuracy and precision (mean recoveries were between 70 and 120% with relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 20% in most cases), low matrix effects, good linearity for the matrix-matched calibration curve (R2≥0.991) and MLOQs ranged from 0.25 and 10 µg/kg. To demonstrate the applicability and suitability of the validated method, soil and sediment samples from Vietnam, France, Sweden and Mexico were analyzed. The results showed that of the 90 target compounds, a total of 33 were quantified in the sediment and soil samples analyzed. In addition to multi-target analysis, this strategy could be suitable for non-target screening, to provide a more comprehensive view of the contaminants present in the samples.

Assessment of 18 endocrine disrupting chemicals in tap water samples from Klang Valley, Malaysia

Multiclass of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as nine perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), five bisphenols, and four parabens were analysed in tap water samples from Malaysia's Klang Valley region. All samples were analysed using liquid chromatography mass tandem spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with limit of quantitation (LOQ) ranged between 0.015 and 5 ng/mL. Fifteen of the 18 EDCs were tested positive in tap water samples, with total EDC concentrations ranging from 0.28 to 5516 ng/L for all 61 sampling point locations. In a specific area of the Klang Valley, the total concentration of EDCs was found to be highest in Hulu Langat, followed by Sepang, Putrajaya, Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, and Gombak/Klang. PFAS and paraben were the most found EDCs in all tap water samples. Meanwhile, ethyl paraben (EtP) exhibited the highest detection rate, with 90.2% of all locations showing its presence. Over 60% of the regions showed the presence of perfluoro-n-butanoic acid (PFBA), perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid (PFHXA), perfluoro-n-octanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoro-n-nonanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluoro-1-octanesulfonate (PFOS), whereas the frequency of detection for other compounds was less than 40%. The spatial distribution and mean concentrations of EDCs in the Klang Valley regions revealed that Hulu Langat, Petaling Jaya, and Putrajaya exhibited higher levels of bisphenol A (BPA). On the other hand, Kuala Lumpur and Sepang displayed the highest mean concentrations of PFBA. In the worst scenario, the estimated daily intake (EDI) and risk quotient of some EDCs in this study exceeded the acceptable daily limits recommended by international standards, particularly for BPA, PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA, where the risk quotient (RQ) was found to be greater than 1, indicating a high risk to human health. The increasing presence of EDCs in tap water is undoubtedly a cause for concern as these substances can have adverse health consequences. This highlights the necessity for a standardised approach to evaluating EDC exposure and its direct impact on human populations' health.

Dynamics of drug contamination of the river-water in the rural, semirural and urban areas of the Mrežnica River in Croatia during COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021)

Increased contamination of aquatic ecosystems with pharmaceuticals could have been expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Surface water from three domains (rural, semirural, urban) of the Mrežnica River (Croatia) was screened for 253 pharmaceuticals by SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS. At the beginning of the pandemic, the highest concentration of drugs (excluding veterinary) was detected at urban site (291.4 ng/L), followed by semirural (186.5 ng/L) and rural (141.6 ng/L). With the progression of pandemic, contamination increase was observed at all sites, but it was the most obvious at semirural (approximately 400-700 ng/L). The most pronounced concentration increases were observed for non-opioid analgesics, especially ibuprofen. In September 2021, the first notable occurrence of opioid analgesics was recorded. The most represented group of pharmaceuticals at the start of the pandemic (May 2020) was generally stimulants (caffeine, cotinine). In September 2021, the predominant group was analgesics at all sites (45-84%), whereas stimulants decreased to undetectable levels. The results of this study indicated that the epidemiological measures and medical treatments that were widely imposed/applied caused notable increase of the surface water contamination with drugs of a small river with limited dilution capacity, indirectly pointing to the changes that occurred in the behaviour and habits of the inhabitants of the affected areas.

Methylparaben toxicity and its removal by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The widespread occurrence of methylparaben (MPB) has aroused great concern due to its weak estrogenic endocrine-disrupting property and potential toxic effects. However, the degradation potential and pathway of MPB by microalgae have rarely been reported. Here, microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum were used to investigate their responses, degradation potential and mechanisms towards MPB. MPB showed low-dose stimulation (by 86.02 ± 0.07% at 1 mg/L) and high-dose inhibition (by 60.17 ± 0.05% at 80 mg/L) towards the growth of C. vulgaris, while showed inhibition for P. tricornutum (by 6.99 ± 0.05%-20.14 ± 0.19%). The degradation efficiencies and rates of MPB were higher in C. vulgaris (100%, 1.66 ± 0.54-5.60 ± 0.86 day^-1) than in P. tricornutum (4.3-34.2%, 0.04 ± 0.01-0.08 ± 0.00 day^-1), which could be explained by the significantly higher extracellular enzyme activity and more fluctuation of the protein ratio for C. vulgaris, indicating a higher ability of C. vulgaris to adapt to pollutant stress. Biodegradation was the main removal mechanism of MPB for both the two microalgae. Furthermore, two different degradation pathways of MPB by the two microalgae were proposed. MPB could be mineralized and completely detoxified by C. vulgaris. Overall, this study provides novel insights into MPB degradation by microalgae and strategies for simultaneous biodegradation and detoxification of MPB in the environment.

Chemical prioritization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in an urban tributary of the Potomac River

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are incredibly diverse in terms of chemical structures, physicochemical properties, and modes of action, making their environmental impacts challenging to assess. New chemical prioritization methodologies have emerged that compare contaminant monitoring concentrations to multiple toxicity data sources, including whole organism and high-throughput data, to develop a list of "high priority" chemicals requiring further study. We applied such an approach to assess PPCPs in Hunting Creek, an urban tributary of the Potomac River near Washington, DC, which has experienced extensive human population growth. We estimated potential risks of 99 PPCPs from surface water and sediment collected upstream and downstream of a major wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), nearby combined sewer overflows (CSO), and in the adjacent Potomac River. The greatest potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem occurred near WWTP and CSO outfalls, but risk levels rapidly dropped below thresholds of concern - established by previous chemical prioritization studies - in the Potomac mainstem. These results suggest that urban tributaries, rather than larger rivers, are important to monitor because their lower or intermittent flow may not adequately dilute contaminants of concern. Common psychotropics, such as fluoxetine and venlafaxine, presented the highest potential risks, with toxicity quotients often > 10 in surface water and > 1000 in sediment, indicating the need for further field studies. Several ubiquitous chemicals such as caffeine and carbamazepine also exceeded thresholds of concern throughout our study area and point to specific neurotoxic and endocrine modes of action that warrant further investigation. Since many "high priority" chemicals in our analysis have also triggered concerns in other areas around the world, better coordination is needed among environmental monitoring programs to improve global chemical prioritization efforts.

Personal Care Products as a Contributing Factor to Antimicrobial Resistance: Current State and Novel Approach to Investigation

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the world's industrialized nations' biggest issues. It has a significant influence on the ecosystem and negatively affects human health. The overuse of antibiotics in the healthcare and agri-food industries has historically been defined as a leading factor, although the use of antimicrobial-containing personal care products plays a significant role in the spread of AMR. Lotions, creams, shampoos, soaps, shower gels, toothpaste, fragrances, and other items are used for everyday grooming and hygiene. However, in addition to the primary ingredients, additives are included to help preserve the product by lowering its microbial load and provide disinfection properties. These same substances are released into the environment, escaping traditional wastewater treatment methods and remaining in ecosystems where they contact microbial communities and promote the spread of resistance. The study of antimicrobial compounds, which are often solely researched from a toxicological point of view, must be resumed considering the recent discoveries, to highlight their contribution to AMR. Parabens, triclocarban, and triclosan are among the most worrying chemicals. To investigate this issue, more effective models must be chosen. Among them, zebrafish is a crucial study system because it allows for the assessment of both the risks associated with exposure to these substances as well as environmental monitoring. Furthermore, artificial intelligence-based computer systems are useful in simplifying the handling of antibiotic resistance data and speeding up drug discovery processes.

MCDA-DEA approach to construct a composite indicator for effluents from WWTPs considering the influence of PPCPs

Considering current water situation, reuse is an effective solution to meet water demand and reduce pressure on conventional water sources. However, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) decrease their quality and suitability. With the aim of identifying and monitoring both the influence of PPCPs and the suitability of effluents to be reused, this study proposes the development of a composite indicator (CI) related to PPCP presence in WWTPs, through the common weight multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA)-data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. Obtaining a CI for PPCPs is a novel approach in the published literature, showing a new perspective in PPCP management and their influence in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this study proposes an improvement on MCDA-DEA model which maintains the initial hierarchy obtained for the units analyzed. The development of CI is based on information about the technological, environmental, social, and biological issues of WWTPs. Results show that 4 of the 33 WWTPs analysed had the best CI values, meaning that their effluents have lower environmental impact. The development of a CI related to PPCPs in WWTPs suggests that further steps are needed to manage the WWTP effluents. Hence, the need to implement preventive measures in WWTPs has been shown, even though the removal of PPCPs is not yet part of European law. This work highlights the importance of considering PPCPs as priority pollutants in wastewater management and reuse frameworks, to guarantee low environmental impact and adapt wastewater reuse based on a circular economy approach. HIGHLIGHTS: Emerging contaminants (PPCPs) are used as effluent quality indicators. A composite indicator for PPCPs performance has been developed through MCDA-DEA model. Indicator obtained allow decision makers implementing concrete actions to assess effluent quality. Results show the improvement capacity of the effluents quality through PPCPs removing.

Cocktails of NSAIDs and 17α Ethinylestradiol at Environmentally Relevant Doses in Drinking Water Alter Puberty Onset in Mice Intergenerationally

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and 17α-ethinyl-estradiol (EE2) are among the most relevant endocrine-disrupting pharmaceuticals found in the environment, particularly in surface and drinking water due to their incomplete removal via wastewater treatment plants. Exposure of pregnant mice to NSAID therapeutic doses during the sex determination period has a negative impact on gonadal development and fertility in adults; however, the effects of their chronic exposure at lower doses are unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic exposure to a mixture containing ibuprofen, 2hydroxy-ibuprofen, diclofenac, and EE2 at two environmentally relevant doses (added to the drinking water from fetal life until puberty) on the reproductive tract in F1 exposed mice and their F2 offspring. In F1 animals, exposure delayed male puberty and accelerated female puberty. In post-pubertal F1 testes and ovaries, differentiation/maturation of the different gonad cell types was altered, and some of these modifications were observed also in the non-exposed F2 generation. Transcriptomic analysis of post-pubertal testes and ovaries of F1 (exposed) and F2 animals revealed significant changes in gene expression profiles and enriched pathways, particularly the inflammasome, metabolism and extracellular matrix pathways, compared with controls (non-exposed). This suggested that exposure to these drug cocktails has an intergenerational impact. The identified Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) networks for NSAIDs and EE2, at doses that are relevant to everyday human exposure, will improve the AOP network of the human reproductive system development concerning endocrine disruptor chemicals. It may serve to identify other putative endocrine disruptors for mammalian species based on the expression of biomarkers.

Endocrine Disruption of Propylparaben in the Male Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis): Tissue Injuries and Abnormal Gene Expressions of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal-Liver Axis

Propylparaben (PrP) is a widely used preservative that is constantly detected in aquatic environments and poses a potential threat to aquatic ecosystems. In the present work, adult male mosquitofish were acutely (4d) and chronically (32d) exposed to environmentally and humanly realistic concentrations of PrP (0, 0.15, 6.00 and 240 μg/L), aimed to investigate the toxic effects, endocrine disruption and possible mechanisms of PrP. Histological analysis showed time- and dose-dependent manners in the morphological injuries of brain, liver and testes. Histopathological alterations in the liver were found in 4d and severe damage was identified in 32d, including hepatic sinus dilatation, cytoplasmic vacuolation, cytolysis and nuclear aggregation. Tissue impairments in the brain and testes were detected in 32d; cell cavitation, cytomorphosis and blurred cell boundaries appeared in the brain, while the testes lesions contained spermatogenic cell lesion, decreased mature seminal vesicle, sperm cells gathering, seminiferous tubules disorder and dilated intercellular space. Furthermore, delayed spermatogenesis had occurred. The transcriptional changes of 19 genes along the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal-liver (HPGL) axis were investigated across the three organs. The disrupted expression of genes such as Ers, Ars, Vtgs, cyp19a, star, hsd3b, hsd17b3 and shh indicated the possible abnormal steroidogenesis, estrogenic or antiandrogen effects of PrP. Overall, the present results provided evidences for the toxigenicity and endocrine disruptive effects on the male mosquitofish of chronic PrP exposure, which highlights the need for more investigations of its potential health risks.

Prevalence of organic micropollutants in the Yamuna River, Delhi, India: seasonal variations and governing factors

This work primarily emphases on evaluating the prevalence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the perennial Yamuna River (YR) that flow through the national capital of India, Delhi. Sixteen sampling campaigns (non-monsoon, n = 9; monsoon n = 7) were organized to understand the seasonal variations with special emphasis on monsoon. We have found fifty-five OMPs in the monsoon; while forty-seven were detected in non-monsoon. Fifty-seven screened and quantified OMPs in the most polluted stretch of River Yamuna included the pharmaceutically active compounds, pesticides, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, phthalates, personal care products, fatty acids, food additives, hormones, and trace organics present in hospital wastes. During monsoon months, compounds for which concentrations exceeded 50 μg/L were: adenine (64.6 μg/L), diethyl phthalate (62.9 μg/L), and octamethyltrisiloxane (56.9 μg/L); and the same for non-monsoon months was only for 1-dodecanethiol (52.3 μg/L). The average concentration of OMPs in non-monsoon months indicate PhACs>PCPs>Pesticides>Fatty acids>Hospital waste>Hormones>Pesticides>EDCs. In monsoon months due to surface runoff and high volume of untreated wastewater discharges few more OMPs concentrations were detected which mainly includes PhACs (clofibric acid, diclofenac sodium, gemfibrozil, ketoprofen), pesticides (aldrin, metribuzin, atrazine, simazine). Due to dilution effect in the monsoon months, average concentrations of 3-acetamido-5-bromobenzoic acid (PhACs) was reduced from 45.22 μg/L to 14.07 μg/L, whereas some EDCs such as 2,4- Di-tert-amylphenol, 3,5- di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, Triphenylphosphine oxide, Benzophenone were found in much higher concentrations in the monsoon months. Octamethyltrisiloxane (PCPs) was detected 50 times higher in concentration in the monsoon months. Interestingly, the concentration of about 50 % of the OMPs was more in the monsoon samples than in non-monsoon samples which is contrary to the general understanding that monsoon-induced dilution lowers the concentrations of OMPs. In RY water higher magnitude of diclofenac sodium, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and clofibric acid was found than Europe and North America rivers. Hormones such as estriol and estrone in RY water are found 70 to 100 times higher than the maximum reported concentrations in the US streams. Finally, various OMPs responded differently to the monsoon season as evident from multivariate analyses.

Determination and risk assessment of pharmaceutical residues in the urban water cycle in Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia

The environmental fate of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the urban water cycle is still uncertain and their status is mainly assessed based on specific water components and information on human risk assessments. This study (a) explores the environmental fate of NSAIDs (ibuprofen, IBU; naproxen, NAP; ketoprofen, KET; diazepam, DIA; and diclofenac, DIC) in the urban water cycle, including wastewater, river, and treated water via gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (GCMS), (b) assesses the efficiency of reducing the targeted NSAIDs in sewage treatment plant (STP) using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and (c) evaluates the ecological risk assessment of these drugs in the urban water cycle via teratogenic index (TI) and risk quotient (RQ). The primary receptor of contaminants comes from urban areas, as a high concentration of NSAIDs is detected (ranging from 5.87 × 10³ to 7.18 × 10⁴ ng/L). The percentage of NSAIDs removal in STP ranged from 25.6% to 92.3%. The NAP and KET were still detected at trace levels in treated water, indicating the persistent presence in the water cycle. The TI values for NAP and DIA (influent and effluent) were more than 1, showing a risk of a teratogenic effect. The IBU, KET, and DIC had values of less than 1, indicating the risk of lethal embryo effects. The NAP and DIA can be classified as Human Pregnancy Category C (2.1 > TI ≥ 0.76). This work proved that these drugs exist in the current urban water cycle, which could induce adverse effects on humans and the environment (RQ in high and low-risk categories). Therefore, they should be minimized, if not eliminated, from the primary sources of the pollutant (i.e., STPs). These pollutants should be considered a priority to be monitored, given focus to, and listed in the guideline due to their persistent presence in the urban water cycle.

Solar-induced efficient propylparaben photodegradation by nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C3N4: Morphology, activity and mechanism

Propylparaben (PrP) has attracted extensive concerns due to its wide occurrence in wastewater and potential health risk. Herein, nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C₃N₄ (Nv-RCN) was successfully synthesized for the photodegradation of PrP. Nv-RCN exhibited larger specific surface area, greater light absorption ability, higher transfer and separation efficiency of charge carriers in comparison with bulk g-C₃N₄ (CN). According to the characterization results and DFT calculation, nitrogen vacancy could capture electrons and facilitate oxygen adsorption. The Nv-RCN exhibited an outstanding PrP removal efficiency of 94.3 %, and the corresponding apparent rate constant of Nv-RCN was 3.37 times higher than that of CN. High O₂ concentration (8 mg/L) and low pH value (pH = 3) promoted PrP photodegradation based on Box-Behnken Design. The O₂^- was the major radical during PCOP of Nv-RCN, and could oxidize PrP by decarbonylation and dealkylation. This study provided new insights to the improvement of photodegradation performance of g-C₃N₄ for parabens removal and related environmental remediation.

Seasonal occurrence of multiple classes of antibiotics in East China rivers and their association with suspended particulate matter

Understanding the occurrence and fate of antibiotics from different categories is vital to predict their environmental exposure and risks. This study presents the spatiotemporal occurrence of 45 multi-class antibiotics and their associations with suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Xiaoqing River (XRB) and Yellow River (YRB) via 10-month monitoring in East China. Thirty-five and 31 antibiotics were detected in XRB and YRB, respectively. Among them, fluoroquinolones (FQs) had the highest total mean concentration (up to 24.8 μg/L in XRB and 15.4 μg/L in YRB), followed by sulfonamides (SAs) (14.0 μg/L and 15.4 μg/L) and macrolides (MLs) (1.1 μg/L and 1.6 μg/L). Significant spatial-temporal variations were found in both rivers where higher concentrations of antibiotics were observed in urban and densely populated areas during winter and spring. Hydrological factors such as river flow and water volume, instream attenuation and antibiotic usage may cause the observed variabilities in the seasonal patterns of antibiotic pollution. Using linear regression analysis, for the first time, this study confirmed that the total concentrations of MLs (p < 0.05), FQs (p < 0.001) and SAs (p < 0.001) were strongly correlated with the turbidity/total suspended solids in the studied rivers (except MLs in YRB). It is thus suggested that partitioning processes onto SPM might affect the distribution of detected antibiotics in rivers, which are largely dependent on SPM composition and characteristics. The risk quotient (RQ) determined for up to 87 % of individual compound was below 0.1 in both rivers; however, the high joint toxicity reflected by the mixed RQs of detected antibiotics may rise risk alarm for aquatic species. Further aspects regarding active mechanisms of SPM-antibiotic interactions and ecological risks of coexistence of multiple antibiotics need to be investigated.

Model simulation and mechanism of Fe(0/II/III) cycle activated persulfate degradation of methylparaben based on hydroxylamine enhanced nano-zero-valent iron

The mechanism of Fe²⁺-activated peroxodisulfate (PDS) by hydroxylamine (HA) has been investigated, however, nano zero-valent iron-activated persulfate (nZVI/PDS) has a more optimal effect and needs further investigation. This study investigated the addition of HA to nZVI/PDS to improve Fe²⁺ regeneration and accelerate methylparaben (MP) degradation by Fe (0/II/III) cycle. After 60 min of reaction, the HA-enhanced nZVI/PDS (HA/nZVI/PDS) system afforded a 21% increase in MP degradation, reaching 93.26% (1 mM HA, 1 mM nZVI, and 2 mM PDS). nZVI/PDS system was a second-order reaction, but after adding HA, the reaction was more suitable for the first-order reaction. The addition of HA effectively promoted the reduction of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ to improve the effect and reaction rate of PDS degradation of MP (k increased from 0.0127 min^-1 to 0.0198 min^-1) and broadened the reaction pH range. The results of various characterizations of nZVI before and after the reaction revealed that nZVI changed from a spherical structure to a bundle structure and was slightly oxidized. Changes in the Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ concentrations as well as in the pH of the reaction systems were monitored and the possible reactions of the HA/nZVI/PDS system were derived for the first time (k_nZVI/PDS<3.7 × 10⁶ M^-1 s^-1, k_Fe3+/NH2O· >4.2 min^-1). 12 potential compounds were investigated and MP breakdown pathways were speculated; hydroxylation was determined to be the most important pathway of degradation. And the HA/nZVI/PDS system had universal applicability.

Cosmetic Preservatives: Hazardous Micropollutants in Need of Greater Attention?

In recent years, personal care products (PCPs) have surfaced as a novel class of pollutants due to their release into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and receiving environments by sewage effluent and biosolid-augmentation soil, which poses potential risks to non-target organisms. Among PCPs, there are preservatives that are added to cosmetics for protection against microbial spoilage. This paper presents a review of the occurrence in different environmental matrices, toxicological effects, and mechanisms of microbial degradation of four selected preservatives (triclocarban, chloroxylenol, methylisothiazolinone, and benzalkonium chloride). Due to the insufficient removal from WWTPs, cosmetic preservatives have been widely detected in aquatic environments and sewage sludge at concentrations mainly below tens of µg L^-1. These compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms, such as fish, algae, daphnids, and rotifers, as well as terrestrial organisms. A summary of the mechanisms of preservative biodegradation by micro-organisms and analysis of emerging intermediates is also provided. Formed metabolites are often characterized by lower toxicity compared to the parent compounds. Further studies are needed for an evaluation of environmental concentrations of preservatives in diverse matrices and toxicity to more species of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and for an understanding of the mechanisms of microbial degradation. The research should focus on chloroxylenol and methylisothiazolinone because these compounds are the least understood.

Assessing the colonization by Daphnia magna of pesticide-disturbed habitats (chlorpyrifos, terbuthylazine and their mixtures) and the behavioral and neurotoxic effects

The spread of pesticides in water bodies integrated into agricultural landscapes may prevent some areas from being colonized. In this study, the effects on the colonization responses of D. magna exerted by gradients of realistic environmental concentrations of the pesticides chlorpyrifos, terbuthylazine and their mixtures were tested in a novel multicompartment non-forced exposure system. Furthermore, the effects of both pesticides and their mixtures on the swimming behavior and the neurotransmission activity of D. magna were analyzed using a traditional forced exposure system. The synthesis and concentration of the main environmental metabolites of terbuthylazine were also analyzed. Results confirmed that D. magna exposed to mixture gradients were able to detect the pollutants and their colonization dynamics were drastically inhibited. The swimming behavior increased in D. magna exposed to the highest concentration of the mixture treatment. AChE activity was only significantly inhibited in the D. magna exposed to the highest concentration of chlorpyrifos. Changes in swimming behavior could not be directly related to the effects on AChE. Furthermore, the synthesis of the metabolite terbuthylazine 2-hydroxy during the course of the experiments was confirmed. These results demonstrate the importance of integrating pesticide mixtures in both non-forced and forced exposure systems during ecotoxicological assays.

Emerging contaminants migration from pipes used in drinking water distribution systems: a review of the scientific literature

Migration of emerging contaminants (ECs) from pipes into water is a global concern due to potential human health effects. Nevertheless, a review of migration ECs from pipes into water distribution systems is presently lacking. This paper reviews, the reported occurrence migration of ECs from pipes into water distribution systems in the world. Furthermore, the results related to ECs migration from pipes into water distribution systems, their probable sources, and their hazards are discussed. The present manuscript considered the existing reports on migration of five main categories of ECs including microplastics (MPs), bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, nonylphenol (NP), perfluoroalkyl, and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from distribution network into tap water. A focus on tap water in published literature suggests that pipes type used had an important role on levels of ECs migration in water during transport and storage of water. For comparison, tap drinking water in contact with polymer pipes had the highest mean concentrations of reviewed contaminants. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most frequently detected types of microplastics (MPs) in tap water. Based on the risk assessment analysis of ECs, levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were above 1, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk to consumers. Finally, there are still scientific gaps on occurrence and migration of ECs from pipes used in distribution systems, and this needs more in-depth studies to evaluate their exposure hazards on human health.

Comparative cytotoxicity induced by parabens and their halogenated byproducts in human and fish cell lines

Parabens are a group of para-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) esters widely used in pharmaceutical industries. Their safety is well documented in mammalian models, but little is known about their toxicity in non-mammal species. In addition, chlorinated and brominated parabens resulting from wastewater treatment have been identified in effluents. In the present study, we explored the cytotoxic effects (EC₅₀) of five parabens: methylparaben (MP), ethylparaben (EP), propylparaben (PP), butylparaben (BuP), and benzylparaben (BeP); the primary metabolite, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA), and three of the wastewater chlorinated/brominated byproducts on fish and human cell lines. In general, higher cytotoxicity was observed with increased paraben chain length. The tested compounds induced toxicity in the order of 4-HBA < MP < EP < PP < BuP < BeP. The halogenated byproducts led to higher toxicity with the addition of second chlorine. The longer chain-parabens (BuP and BeP) caused a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability in fish cell lines. Intriguingly, the main paraben metabolite, 4-HBA, proved to be more toxic to fish hepatocytes than human hepatocytes by 100-fold. Our study demonstrated that the cytotoxicity of some of these compounds appears to be tissue-dependent. These observations provide valuable information for early cellular responses in human and non-mammalian models upon exposure to paraben congeners.

CdS and Ag synergistically improved the performance of g-C3N4 on visible-light photocatalytic degradation of pollution

CdS-AgO@g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and characterized by XRD, N₂ physical adsorption, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDX, and UV-Vis DRS (various technical means). The adsorption light range of as-prepared materials could extend to the whole visible light region with the addition of Ag. Silver can act as a bridge to facilitate the separation of electrons and holes, thereby greatly enhancing the photocatalytic activity of CdS-AgO@g-C₃N₄, enabling the maximum degradation efficiency of salicylic acid in water to reach 92.8% under visible light. Peroxy radical is the most important radical in the photocatalytic reaction process, followed by electron and hole, while hydroxyl radical has almost no effect. In addition, the mechanism of photocatalytic process was also explored.

Occurrence and risk assessment of typical PPCPs and biodegradation pathway of ribavirin in wastewater treatment plants

A large number of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) persist in wastewater, and the consumption of PPCPs for COVID-19 control and prevention has sharply increased during the pandemic. This study investigated the occurrence, removal efficiency, and risk assessment of six typical PPCPs commonly used in China in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Ribavirin (RBV) is an effective pharmaceutical for severely ill patients with COVID-19, and the possible biodegradation pathway of RBV by activated sludge was discovered. The experimental results showed that PPCPs were detected in two WWTPs with a detection rate of 100% and concentrations ranging between 612 and 2323 ng L^-1. The detection frequency and concentrations of RBV were substantially higher, with a maximum concentration of 314 ng L^-1. Relatively high pollution loads were found for the following PPCPs from influent: ibuprofen > ranitidine hydrochloride > RBV > ampicillin sodium > clozapine > sulfamethoxazole. The removal efficiency of PPCPs was closely related to adsorption and biodegradation in activated sludge, and the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) had a higher removal capacity than the anoxic-anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAAO) process. The removal efficiencies of sulfamethoxazole, ampicillin sodium, ibuprofen, and clozapine ranged from 92.21% to 97.86% in MBBR process and were relatively low, from 61.82% to 97.62% in AAAO process, and the removal of RBV and ranitidine hydrochloride were lower than 42.96% in both MBBR and AAAO processes. The discrepancy in removal efficiency is caused by temperature, hydrophilicity, and hydrophobicity of the compound, and acidity and alkalinity. The transformation products of RBV in activated sludge were detected and identified, and the biodegradation process of RBV could be speculated as follows: first breaks into TCONH₂ and an oxygen-containing five-membered heterocyclic ring under the nucleosidase reaction, and then TCONH₂ is finally formed into TCOOH through amide hydrolysis. Aquatic ecological risks based on risk quotient (RQ) assessment showed that PPCPs had high and medium risks in the influent, and the RQ values were all reduced after MBBR and AAAO treatment. Ranitidine hydrochloride and clozapine still showed high and medium risks in the effluent, respectively, and thus presented potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem.

A survey of parabens in aquatic environments in Hanoi, Vietnam and its implications for human exposure and ecological risk

Seven parabens including methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), iso-propylparaben (iPrP), butylparaben (BuP), benzylparaben (BzP), and heptylparaben (HepP) were determined in bottled water, tap water, river water, lake water, and wastewater samples collected from Hanoi, Vietnam, using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The highest total concentration of parabens were measured in wastewater (range, 27.3-1050 ng/L; mean/median, 268/175 ng/L), followed by lake water (range, 18.0-254 ng/L; mean/median, 51.7/58.5 ng/L), river water (range, 16.5-52.1 ng/L; mean/median, 32.1/42.6 ng/L), tap water (range, 5.01-54.3 ng/L; mean/median, 28.6/41.1 ng/L), and bottled water (range, 1.56-39.9 ng/L; mean/median, 6.92/9.19 ng/L). Methylparaben and propylparaben were the predominant compounds found in all samples. The mean estimated human exposure dose of parabens through drinking bottled water was 0.27 ng/kg-bw/day, which is 6 orders of magnitude below the safety threshold recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additive in 1974 (10 mg/kg-bw/day). Concentrations of parabens measured in river water, lake water, and wastewater samples were assessed to pose low to moderate ecological risks to aquatic organisms (0.1 < RQ < 1). Methyl, ethyl, and propyl parabens exhibited significant correlations in water samples.

Enhanced photocatalytic treatment using plasmonic Ag@Ag3PO4/Ag@AgCl nanophotocatalyst for simultaneous degradation of multiple parabens and UV-filters in various aquatic environments under visible light irradiation

In this study, simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of different parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butyl paraben) and UV filters (benzophenone-3, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, 2-ethylhexyl 4-(dimethylamino) benzoate, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and octocrylene) in water matrices was performed under visible light irradiation using novel double plasmonic Ag^@Ag₃PO₄/Ag^@AgCl nanophotocatalyst, synthesized by an easy and fast photochemical conversion and photo-reduction. It was found that the nanophotocatalyst with appropriate mole ratio of Ag^@Ag₃PO₄/Ag^@AgCl (1:3) showed superior photocatalytic activity than individual plasmonic nanoparticles. This is because there are two simultaneous surface plasmon resonances (SPR) generated by the metallic Ag nanoparticles, in addition to the hetero-junction structure formed at the interface between Ag^@Ag₃PO₄ and Ag^@AgCl. The structures of the synthesized photocatalysts were characterized, and the principal reactive oxygen species in the photocatalytic process were identified via a trapping experiment, confirming superoxide radicals (^∙O₂^-) as the key reactive species of the photocatalytic system. The process of photodegradation of the target pollutants was monitored using an optimized method that incorporated solid-phase extraction in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The simultaneous photodegradation process was modeled and optimized using central composite design. The kinetic study revealed that the degradation process over Ag^@Ag₃PO_{4 (30%)}/Ag^@AgCl _(70%) under visible light followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The simultaneous degradation of target compounds was further investigated in sewage treatment plant effluent as well as tap water. It was found that the matrix constituents can reduce the photodegradation efficiency, especially in the case of highly contaminated samples.

Crosslinked 4-Vinylpyridine Monodisperse Functional Microspheres for Sorption of Ibuprofen and Ketoprofen

Nowadays, ibuprofen and ketoprofen are widely used over-the-counter medications to treat inflammation, fever, or pain. Their high consumption and improper disposal cause them to get into the environment and often pollute surface water. In this study, the new polymeric porous microspheres based on 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) are presented as effective sorbents for ibuprofen and ketoprofen preconcentration and removal. The porous microspheres were obtained via seed swelling polymerization with the use of two types of methacrylate crosslinkers, i.e., trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) and 1,4-dimethacryloiloxybenzene (14DMB). Additionally, as a reference sorbent, a copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene was obtained. Porous structure investigations showed that the microspheres possess a specific surface area of about 100 m²/g, but noticeable differences were observed in their internal topography depending on the type of crosslinker used. Moreover, the porous structure of dry and swollen microspheres differs significantly. Swollen copolymers reveal the presence of micropores. The 4VP microspheres are characterized by high thermal stability; their initial decomposition temperature is about 300 °C. The performance of the 4VP copolymers as sorbents in aqueous solutions of drugs was evaluated in static and dynamic modes at three pH values of 3, 7, and 11. The highest sorption efficiency was obtained for ibuprofen and ketoprofen in pH 3. Both 4VP copolymers indicate the high sorption capacity in a static sorption as follows: towards ketoprofen of about 40 mg/g whereas towards ibuprofen of about 90 mg/g and 75 mg/g on copolymer crosslinked with trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate and 1,4-dimethacryloiloxybenzene, respectively. The recovery of ibuprofen and ketoprofen after dynamic sorption experiments was higher than 90%.

Hollow porous cobalt oxide nanobox as an enhanced for activating monopersulfate to degrade 2-hydroxybenzoic acid in water

As 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) represents a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), constant releasing of HBA into the environment poses threats to the ecology, and thus it is critical to develop effective techniques to remove HBA from water. Recently, sulfate radical (SO₄^‒)-based advanced oxidation processes involved with monopersulfate (MPS) activation are proven as effective approaches for eliminating PPCPs from water, and Co₃O₄ is recognized as a capable catalyst for activating MPS. Therefore, great interests have arisen to develop Co₃O₄-based catalysts with advantageous morphologies and characteristics for enhancing catalytic activities. Therefore, a special Co₃O₄-based material is proposed in this work. Through a surfactant-assisted strategy, a cubic Co-MOF is prepared and used as a precursor, which is etched to afford hollow structure, and then transformed into hollow porous Co₃O₄ nanobox (PCNB). PCNB can exhibit distinct reactive surface with abundant surface oxygen vacancy as well as physical properties in comparison to the commercial Co₃O₄ NPs (com-Co₃O₄ NP), thereby leading to the outstanding catalytic activity of PCNB for activating MPS to degrade HBA. The activation energy (E_a) of 46.2 kJ/mol is also calculated using PCNB + MPS system, which is much lower than most of recent reported studies for activating MPS. PCNB could be also reusable over 5 consecutive HBA degradation cycles. The activation mechanism of MPS by PCNB and HBA degradation pathway are also comprehensively elucidated via experimental evidences and the theoretical calculation to offer insightful information of development of Co₃O₄ for HBA degradation.

The curious case of methylparaben: Anthropogenic contaminant or natural origin?

The widespread use of methylparaben as a preservative has caused increased exposure to natural aquatic systems in recent decades. However, current studies have suggested that exposure to this compound can result in endocrine disrupting effects, raising much concern regarding its environmental impact. In contast, methylparaben has also been found to be part of the metabolome of some organisms, prompting the question as to whether this compound may be more natural than previously assumed. Through a combination of field studies investigating the natural presence of methylparaben across different taxa, and a 54-day microcosm experiment examining the bioaccumulation and movement of methylparaben across different life stages of aquatic insects (order Trichoptera), our results offer evidence suggesting the natural origin of methylparaben in aquatic and terrestrial biota. This study improves our understanding of the role and impact this compound has on biota and challenges the current paradigm that methylparaben is exclusively a harmful anthropogenic contaminant. Our findings highlight the need for further research on this topic to fully understand the origin and role of parabens in the environment which will allow for a comprehensive understanding of the extent of environmental contamination and result in a representative assessment of the environmental risk that may pose.

Efficiency of the bank filtration technique for diclofenac removal: A review

Bank filtration (BF) has been employed for more than a century for the production of water with a better quality, and it has been showing satisfactory results in diclofenac attenuation. Considered the most administered analgesic in the world, diclofenac has been frequently detected in water bodies. Besides being persistent in the environment, this compound is not completely removed by the conventional water treatments, drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and wastewater treatment plant (WWTPs). BF has a high complexity, whose efficiency depends on the characteristics of the observed pollutant and on the environment where the system in installed, which is why this is a topic that has been constantly studied. Nevertheless, studies present the behavior of diclofenac during the BF process. In this context, this research performed the evaluation of the factors and the biogeochemical processes that influence the efficiency of the BF technique in diclofenac removal. The aerobic conditions, higher temperatures, microbial biomass density, hydrogen potential close to neutrality and sediments with heterogeneous fractions are considered the ideal conditions in the aquifer for diclofenac removal. Nonetheless, there is no consensus on which of these factors has the greatest contribution on the mechanism of attenuation during BF. Studies with columns in laboratory and modeling affirm that the highest degradation rates occur in the first centimeters (5-50 cm) of the passage of water through the porous medium, in the environment known as hyporheic zone, where intense biogeochemical activities occur. Research has shown 100% removal efficiency for diclofenac persistent to compounds not removed during the BF process. However, half of the studies had removal efficiency that ranged between 80 and 100%. Therefore, the performance of more in-depth studies on the degradation and mobility of this compound becomes necessary for a better understanding of the conditions and biogeochemical processes which act in its attenuation.

Iron-Doped Bimodal Mesoporous Silica Nanomaterials as Sorbents for Solid-Phase Extraction of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Environmental Water Samples

In this work, sorbets based on UVM-7 mesoporous silica doped with Fe were synthesized and applied to solid-phase extraction of perfluoroalkyl substances from environmental water samples. These emerging pollutants were then determined by liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometry detector. Thus, Fe-UVM-7 mesoporous silica materials with different contents of iron, as well as different pore sizes (by using alkyltrimethilamonium bromide surfactants with different organic tail lengths) were synthesized, and their structure was confirmed for the first time by transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. After comparison, Fe50-UVM-7-C₁₂ was selected as the best material for analyte retention, and several extraction parameters were optimized regarding the loading and elution step. Once the method was developed and applied to real matrices, extraction efficiencies in the range of 61–110% were obtained for analytes with C₈–C₁₄ chain length, both perfluoroalkyl carboxylates, and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates. Likewise, limits of detection in the range of 3.0–8.1 ng L⁻¹ were obtained for all target analytes. In the analysis of real well-water samples, no target compounds were detected. Spiked samples were analyzed in comparison to Oasis WAX cartridges, and statistically comparable results were achieved.

Biodiversity impacts by multiple anthropogenic stressors in Mediterranean coastal wetlands

Mediterranean coastal wetlands are considered biodiversity hot-spots and contain a high number of endemic species. The biodiversity of these ecosystems is endangered by several pressures resulting from agricultural and urban expansion, climate change, and the alteration of their hydrological cycle. In this study we assess the state-of-the-art regarding the impact of several stressor groups on the biodiversity of Mediterranean coastal wetlands (i.e., lagoons, marshes, estuaries). Particularly, we describe the impacts of eutrophication, chemical pollution, invasive species, salinization, and temperature rise, and analyze the existing literature regarding the impact of multiple stressors on these ecosystems. Our study denotes a clear asymmetry both in terms of study areas and stressors evaluated. The majority of studies focus on lagoons and estuaries of the north-west parts of the Mediterranean basin, while the African and the Asian coast have been less represented. Eutrophication and chemical pollution were the most studied stressors compared to others like temperature rise or species invasions. Most studies evaluating these stressors individually show direct or indirect effects on the biodiversity of primary producers and invertebrate communities, and changes in species dominance patterns that contribute to a decline of endemic populations. The few available studies addressing stressor interactions have shown non-additive responses, which are important to define appropriate ecosystem management and restoration measures. Finally, we propose research needs to advance our understanding on the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on Mediterranean coastal wetlands and to guide future interventions to protect biodiversity.

Circular economy and payment for ecosystem services: A framework proposal based on water reuse

Water scarcity forces the use of non-conventional water sources, to satisfy water demand, such as the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Water reuse helps to close the urban water cycle and reduce pressure on available water resources, providing a bases for circular economy in the water sector. Under an ecosystem services (ES) point of view, if water reuse is considered the best management option in water scarcity areas, WWTPs are responsible for the ES of provisioning. One of the main requirements for the ES of provisioning is to guarantee the reclaimed water quality due to this water being discharged back into the ecosystem. Hence why removing pollutants, such as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), is necessary to reduce the environmental impact of reused water. Considering the lack of legislation about PPCPs in effluents, this study proposes the use of the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) approach as an innovative solution to provide reclaimed water without PPCPs considering both the environmental and institutional context and the importance of WWTPs as non-conventional water sources. This study contributes to consider the PES as a water cycle management tool and its suitability to be used to remove PPCPs is highlighted, with the purpose of promoting water reuse in water scarcity areas under circular economy approach.

Removal of tramadol from water using Typha angustifolia and Hordeum vulgare as biological models: Possible interaction with other pollutants in short-term uptake experiments

Tramadol (TRD) is widely detected in aquatic ecosystems as a result of massive abuse and insufficient removal from wastewater facilities. As a result, TRD can contaminate groundwater sources and/or agricultural soils. While TRD toxicity has been reported from aquatic biota, data about TRD detection in plants are scarce. Moreover, information regarding plant capability for TRD removal is lacking. To understand the fate of this opioid, we have investigated the uptake, translocation and removal capacity of TRD by plants, addressing short-term and long-term uptake. The uptake rates of TRD, in excised barley and cattail roots, were 5.18 and 5.79 μg g^-1 root fresh weight day^-1, respectively. However, TRD uptake was strongly inhibited after co-exposing these roots either with the drug venlafaxine (similar molecular structure as TRD) or with quinidine (an inhibitor of cellular organic cation transporters). When barley seedlings were exposed to TRD in a hydroponic experiment a removal efficiency up to 90% (within 15 days) was obtained, with bioconcentration and translocation factors close to 9 and 1, respectively. The combination of results from both plants and the inhibition observed after treatment with quinidine revealed that organic cation transporters may be involved in the uptake of TRD by plants.

Oxysterols Profile in Zebrafish Embryos Exposed to Triclocarban and Propylparaben-A Preliminary Study

Oxysterols have long been considered as simple by-products of cholesterol metabolism, but they are now fully designed as bioactive lipids that exert their multiple effects through their binding to several receptors, representing endogenous mediators potentially involved in several metabolic diseases. There is also a growing concern that metabolic disorders may be linked with exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). To date, there are no studies aimed to link EDCs exposure to oxysterols perturbation-neither in vivo nor in vitro studies. The present research aimed to evaluate the differences in oxysterols levels following exposure to two metabolism disrupting chemicals (propylparaben (PP) and triclocarban (TCC)) in the zebrafish model using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Following exposure to PP and TCC, there were no significant changes in total and individual oxysterols compared with the control group; however, some interesting differences were noticed: 24-OH was detected only in treated zebrafish embryos, as well as the concentrations of 27-OH, which followed a different distribution, with an increase in TCC treated embryos and a reduction in zebrafish embryos exposed to PP at 24 h post-fertilization (hpf). The results of the present study prompt the hypothesis that EDCs can modulate the oxysterol profile in the zebrafish model and that these variations could be potentially involved in the toxicity mechanism of these emerging contaminants.

Simple and Rapid Detection of Ibuprofen─A Typical Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products─by a Liquid Crystal Aptasensor

This work established a liquid crystal (LC) aptasensor for simple and rapid detection of ibuprofen, a typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pollutant. A negatively charged DNA aptamer specific for ibuprofen and a positively charged amphiphilic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were incubated with the sample and then directly added onto the LC interface. In the presence of ibuprofen, the specific binding of ibuprofen with the DNA aptamer will release CTAB, which then adsorbed at the LC-aqueous interface and induced the orientational change of LCs to homeotropic orientation with a dark optical signal output. While in the absence of ibuprofen, the DNA aptamer binds with CTAB through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, LCs remained in the planar orientation with a bright optical signal output. This LC aptasensor also has good specificity for ibuprofen and can even detect ibuprofen drug in tap water. Moreover, the response time of the LC aptasensor is fast in minutes. Additionally, this LC aptasensor benefits in monitoring the water quality and inspires the exploration of a general platform for PPCPs detection.

Ibuprofen degradation by a synergism of facet-controlled MIL-88B(Fe) and persulfate under simulated visible light

The photocatalysis/persulfate (PS) hybrid system has proven to be a promising method for degrading organic pollutants from aqueous solutions. In this study, three MIL-88B(Fe) iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) phases with different facet content were prepared and used both as photocatalysts and catalysts for PS activation to remove ibuprofen (IBP). The results showed that there was a close correlation between the exposed facets and the catalytic activity. MIL-88B(Fe)-1 (M88B1) with exposed {100} facets and proportionally more {101} facets showed the best catalytic activity. The optimum PS dosage used in this study was 60 mg/L. The presence of Cl^-, SO₄^2-, and NO₃^- all inhibited the degradation of IBP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that M88B1 possessed more Fe²⁺ than the other two MIL-88B(Fe) MOF phases, making it easier to generate active radicals through PS activation. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), photoluminescence (PL), and electrochemical analysis indicated that M88B1 possessed the highest light absorption, most active sites, and fastest charge transfer ability. Radical scavenging and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments demonstrated that SO₄^-•, ^•OH, O₂^-•, and ¹O₂ species participated in the IBP degradation process. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to identify the crystallographic facets, band structure, and total density of states of MIL-88B(Fe) to further confirm the mechanism of MIL-88B(Fe) as a photocatalyst and a PS activator. This work provides new insights into the synergism between photocatalysis and persulfate activation by facet-controlled MOFs for environmental remediation.

Antibiotic-metal complexes in wastewaters: fate and treatment trajectory

Unregulated usage, improper disposal, and leakage from pharmaceutical use and manufacturing sites have led to high detection levels of antibiotic residues in wastewater and surface water. The existing water treatment technologies are insufficient for removing trace antibiotics and these residual antibiotics tend to interact with co-existing metal ions and form antibiotic-metal complexes (AMCs) with altered bioactivity profile and physicochemical properties. Typically, antibiotics, including tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and sulphonamides, interact with heavy metals such as Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, to form AMCs which are more persistent and toxic than parent compounds. Although many studies have reported antibiotics detection, determination, distribution and risks associated with their environmental persistence, very few investigations are published on understanding the chemistry of these complexes in the wastewater and sludge matrix. This review, therefore, summarizes the structural features of both antibiotics and metals that facilitate complexation in wastewater. Further, this work critically appraises the treatment methods employed for antibiotic removal, individually and combined with metals, highlights the knowledge gaps, and delineates future perspectives for their treatment.

Passive exposure to cannabidiol oil does not cause microbiome dysbiosis in larval zebrafish

The use of cannabidiol oil derived products has dramatically increased in popularity and is predicted to grow steadily over the next decade. Given its relative stability, cannabidiol is likely to accumulate in the environment and affect aquatic animals and their host-associated microbiomes. Here, using zebrafish larvae, a model system in environmental toxicology, we show that passive exposure to a concentration as high as 200 µg/L cannabidiol oil did not affect larvae survival and had limited effects on their host-associated microbial communities. We found that the changes in community structure were limited to a decrease in two sequence variants identified as Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum sp. and one ASV identified as Staphylococcus sp., as well as the increase of one sequence variant identified as Chryseobacterium sp., a bacterium commensal to zebrafish. More importantly, we found that cannabidiol oil did not affect the overall richness and diversity of the exposed fish microbiomes. These results suggest that passive exposure to cannabidiol oil is unlikely to impact aquatic organisms in significant ways.
