Unique microbial module regulates the harmful algal bloom (Cochlodinium polykrikoides) and shifts the microbial community along the Southern Coast of Korea

Polyphyletic origin of saxitoxin biosynthesis genes in the marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium revealed by comparative transcriptomics

The marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium is known to form harmful algal blooms, and at least 14 species within the genus can produce saxitoxins (STXs). STX biosynthesis genes (sxt) are individually revealed in toxic dinoflagellates; however, the evolutionary history remains controversial. Herein, we determined the transcriptome sequences of toxic Alexandrium (A. catenella and A. pacificum) and non-toxic Alexandrium (A. fraterculus and A. fragae) and characterized their sxt by focusing on evolutionary events and STX production. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed higher homology of the sxt in toxic Alexandrium than in non-toxic species. Notably, non-toxic Alexandrium spp. were found to have lost two sxt core genes, namely sxtA4 and sxtG. Expression levels of 28 transcripts related to eight sxt core genes showed that sxtA, sxtG, and sxtI were relatively high (>1.5) in the toxic group compared to the non-toxic group. In contrast, the non-toxic group showed high expression levels in sxtU (1.9) and sxtD (1.7). Phylogenetic tree comparisons revealed distinct evolutionary patterns between 28S rDNA and sxtA, sxtB, sxtI, sxtD, and sxtU. However, similar topology was observed between 28S rDNA, sxtS, and sxtH/T. In the sxtB and sxtI phylogeny trees, toxic Alexandrium and cyanobacteria were clustered together, separating from non-toxic species. These suggest that Alexandrium may acquire sxt genes independently via horizontal gene transfer from toxic cyanobacteria and other multiple sources, demonstrating monocistronic transcripts of sxt in dinoflagellates.

Response of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum to exudates of the eelgrass Zostera marina

Biotic interactions are a key factor in the development of harmful algal blooms. Recently, a lower abundance of planktonic dinoflagellates has been reported in areas dominated by seagrass beds, suggesting a negative interaction between both groups of organisms. The interaction between planktonic dinoflagellates and marine phanerogams, as well as the way in which bacteria can affect this interaction, was studied in two experiments using a non-axenic culture of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum exposed to increasing additions of eelgrass (Zostera marina) exudates from old and young leaves and to the presence or absence of antibiotics. In these experiments, A. minutum abundance, growth rate and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), as well as bacterial abundance, were measured every 48 h. Toxin concentration per cell was determined at the end of both experiments. Our results demonstrated that Z. marina exudates reduced A. minutum growth rate and, in one of the experiments, also the photosynthetic efficiency. These results are not an indirect effect mediated by the bacteria in the culture, although their growth modify the magnitude of the negative impact on the dinoflagellate growth rate. No clear pattern was observed in the variation of toxin production with the treatments.

Removal of the red tide dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides using chemical disinfectants

For decades, red tide control has been recognized as necessary for mitigating financial damage to fish farms. Chemical disinfectants, frequently used for water disinfection, can reduce the risk of red tides on inland fish farms. This study systematically evaluated four different chemical disinfectants (ozone (O3), permanganate (MnO4-), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)) for their potential use in inland fish farms to control red tides by investigating their (i) inactivation efficacy regarding C. polykrikoides, (ii) total residual oxidant and byproduct formation, and (iii) toxicity to fish. The inactivation efficacy of C. polykrikoides cells by chemical disinfectants from highest to lowest followed the order of O3 > MnO4- > NaOCl > H2O2 for different cell density conditions and disinfectant doses. The O3 and NaOCl treatments generated bromate as an oxidation byproduct by reacting with bromide ions in seawater. The acute toxicity tests of the disinfectants for juvenile red sea bream (Pagrus major) showed that 72-h LC50 values were 1.35 (estimated), 0.39, 1.32, and 102.61 mg/L for O3, MnO4-, NaOCl, and H2O2, respectively. Considering the inactivation efficacy, exposure time of residual oxidants, byproduct formation, and toxicity toward fish, H2O2 is suggested as the most practical disinfectant for controlling red tides in inland fish farms.

Vegetation as a key driver of the distribution of microbial generalists that in turn shapes the overall microbial community structure in the low Arctic tundra

Understanding the variability of microbial niches and their interaction with abiotic and biotic factors in the Arctic can provide valuable insights into microbial adaptations to extreme environments. This study investigates the structure and diversity of soil bacterial communities obtained from sites with varying vegetation coverage and soil biogeochemical properties in the low Arctic tundra and explores how bacteria interact under different environmental parameters. Our findings reveal differences in bacterial composition and abundance among three bacterial niche breadths (specialists, common taxa, and generalists). Co-occurrence network analysis revealed Rhizobiales and Ktedonobacterales as keystone taxa that connect and support other microbes in the habitat. Low-elevation indicators, such as vascular plants and moisture content, were correlated with two out of three generalist modular hubs and were linked to a large proportion of generalists' distribution (18%). Structural equation modeling revealed that generalists' distribution, which influenced the remaining microbial communities, was mainly regulated by vegetation coverage as well as other abiotic and biotic factors. These results suggest that elevation-dependent environmental factors directly influence microbial community structure and module formation through the regulation of generalists' distribution. Furthermore, the distribution of generalists was mainly affected by macroenvironment filtering, whereas the distribution of specialists was mainly affected by microenvironment filtering (species-engineered microbial niche construction). In summary, our findings highlight the strong top-down control exerted by vegetation on generalists' distribution, which in turn shapes the overall microbial community structure in the low Arctic tundra.

Prokaryotic Diversity and Dynamics during Dinoflagellate Bloom Decays in Coastal Tunisian Waters

(1) Background: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can negatively impact marine ecosystems, but few studies have evaluated the microbial diversity associated with HABs and its potential role in the fates of these proliferations. (2) Methods: Marine prokaryotic diversity was investigated using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene during the bloom declines of two dinoflagellates detected in the summer of 2019 along the northern and southern Tunisian coasts (South Mediterranean Sea). The species Gymnodinium impudicum (Carthage, Tunis Gulf) and Alexandrium minutum (Sfax, Gabes Gulf) were identified using microscopy and molecular methods and were related to physicochemical factors and prokaryotic compositions. (3) Results: The abundance of G. impudicum decreased over time with decreasing phosphate concentrations. During the G. impudicum bloom decay, prokaryotes were predominated by the archaeal MGII group (Thalassarchaeaceae), Pelagibacterales (SAR11), Rhodobacterales, and Flavobacteriales. At Sfax, the abundance of A. minutum declined with decreasing phosphate concentrations and increasing pH. At the A. minutum peak, prokaryotic communities were largely dominated by anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur-oxidizing Chromatiaceae (Gammaproteobacteria) before decreasing at the end of the survey. Both the ubiquitous archaeal MGII group and Pelagibacterales were found in low proportions during the A. minutum decay. Contrary to the photosynthetic Cyanobacteria, the photo-autotrophic and -heterotrophic Rhodobacterales and Flavobacteriales contents remained stable during the dinoflagellate bloom decays. (4) Conclusions: These results indicated changes in prokaryotic community diversity during dinoflagellate bloom decays, suggesting different bacterial adaptations to environmental conditions, with stable core populations that were potentially able to degrade HABs.

Microbial community composition and metabolic potential during a succession of algal blooms from Skeletonema sp. to Phaeocystis sp

Elucidating the interactions between algal and microbial communities is essential for understanding the dynamic mechanisms regulating algal blooms in the marine environment. Shifts in bacterial communities when a single species dominates algal blooms have been extensively investigated. However, bacterioplankton community dynamics during bloom succession when one algal species shift to another is still poorly understood. In this study, we used metagenomic analysis to investigate the bacterial community composition and function during algal bloom succession from Skeletonema sp. to Phaeocystis sp. The results revealed that bacterial community structure and function shifted with bloom succession. The dominant group in the Skeletonema bloom was Alphaproteobacteria, while Bacteroidia and Gammaproteobacteria dominated the Phaeocystis bloom. The most noticeable feature during the successions was the change from Rhodobacteraceae to Flavobacteriaceae in the bacterial communities. The Shannon diversity indices were significantly higher in the transitional phase of the two blooms. Metabolic reconstruction of the metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) showed that dominant bacteria exhibited some environmental adaptability in both blooms, capable of metabolizing the main organic compounds, and possibly providing inorganic sulfur to the host algae. Moreover, we identified specific metabolic capabilities of cofactor biosynthesis (e.g., B vitamins) in MAGs in the two algal blooms. In the Skeletonema bloom, Rhodobacteraceae family members might participate in synthesizing vitamin B₁ and B₁₂ to the host, whereas in the Phaeocystis bloom, Flavobacteriaceae was the potential contributor for synthesizing vitamin B₇ to the host. In addition, signal communication (quorum sensing and indole-3-acetic acid molecules) might have also participated in the bacterial response to bloom succession. Bloom-associated microorganisms showed a noticeable response in composition and function to algal succession. The changes in bacterial community structure and function might be an internal driving factor for the bloom succession.

Microalgae removal technology for the cold source of nuclear power plant: A review

In the past three decades, nuclear energy has gained much attention as carbon-free electricity. Due to the supply of cooling water in nuclear power plant, large amount of waste heat will increase the water temperature, promote the microalgae and cyanobacteria propagation and increase the chance of red tide. Excess phytoplankton of cool source will result in abnormal operation of cooling system, even core overheating and nuclear leakage. Consequently, it is very important to remove microalgae and cyanobacteria from cold source of nuclear power plants. This review summarizes the formation mechanism and monitoring methods of red tide, compares the advantages and disadvantages of traditional microalgae removal technology including physical, chemical and biological methods. Furthermore, the improved electrochemical method and micro-nano bubble method are introduced in detail. Their combination is considered to be a low-cost, efficient and environmentally-friendly technology to prevent and control red tides for cold source of nuclear power plant.

Identification and implications of a core bacterial microbiome in 19 clonal cultures laboratory-reared for months to years of the cosmopolitan dinoflagellate Karlodinium veneficum

Identification of a core microbiome (a group of taxa commonly present and consistently abundant in most samples of host populations) is important to capture the key microbes closely associated with a host population, as this process may potentially contribute to further revealing their spatial distribution, temporal stability, ecological influence, and even impacts on their host’s functions and fitness. The naked dinoflagellate Karlodinium veneficum is a cosmopolitan and toxic species, which is also notorious in forming harmful algal blooms (HABs) and causing massive fish-kills. Here we reported the core microbiome tightly associated with 19 strains of K. veneficum that were originally isolated from 6 geographic locations along the coast of China and from an estuary of Chesapeake Bay, United States, and have been maintained in the laboratory for several months to over 14 years. Using high-throughput metabarcoding of the partial 16S rRNA gene amplicons, a total of 1,417 prokaryotic features were detected in the entire bacterial microbiome, which were assigned to 17 phyla, 35 classes, 90 orders, 273 families, and 716 genera. Although the bacterial communities associated with K. veneficum cultures displayed heterogeneity in feature (sequences clustered at 100% sequence similarity) composition among strains, a core set of 6 genera were found persistent in their phycospheres, which could contribute up to 74.54% of the whole bacterial microbiome. Three γ-proteobacteria members of the “core,” namely, Alteromonas, Marinobacter, and Methylophaga, were the predominant core genera and made up 83.25% of the core bacterial microbiome. The other 3 core genera, Alcanivorax, Thalassospira, and Ponticoccus, are reported to preferably utilize hydrocarbons as sole or major source of carbon and energy, and two of which (Alcanivorax and Ponticoccus) are recognized as obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB). Since OHCB generally present in extremely low abundance in marine water and elevate their abundance mostly in petroleum-impacted water, our detection in K. veneficum cultures suggests that the occurrence of obligate and generalist hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria living with dinoflagellates may be more frequent in nature. Our work identified a core microbiome with stable association with the harmful alga K. veneficum and opened a window for further characterization of the physiological mechanisms and ecological implications for the dinoflagellate-bacteria association.

Functional role of a novel algicidal compound produced by Pseudoruegeria sp. M32A2M on the harmful algae Alexandrium catenella

A marine phytoplankton dinoflagellate, Alexandrium sp. is known to cause worldwide harmful algal blooms, resulting in paralytic shellfish poisoning. In this study, we isolated a novel compound secreted by the marine bacterium Pseudoruegeria sp. M32A2M, and showed that it displays algicidal activity against A. catenella (group I). The molecular structure of the compound was analyzed by using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ¹³C NMR, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, which revealed that the compound was a diketopiperazine, cyclo[Ala-Gly]. Cyclo[Ala-Gly] induced a rapid decrease in the active chlorophyll a content and maximal quantum yield of photosystem II, leading to membrane disintegration after 24 h of its treatment. It showed the highest algicidal effect against diketopiperazines and also showed specific algicidal activities against several dinoflagellate species, but not for diatom species. In particular, cyclo[Ala-Gly] caused the transcriptional downregulation of the photosynthesis-related membrane complex in A. catenella, but not in the diatom Chaetoceros simplex. Based on structural modeling, we elucidated that cyclo[Ala-Gly] has a structure similar to that of plastoquinone, which transfers electrons by binding to the photosystem II core proteins PsbA and PsbD. This suggests a novel role for cyclo[Ala-Gly] as a potential inhibitor of photosynthesis.

The in-situ release of algal bloom populations and the role of prokaryotic communities in their establishment and growth

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) may quickly travel and inoculate new water bodies via currents and runoff in estuaries. The role of in-situ prokaryotic communities in the re-establishment and growth of inoculated algal blooms remains unknown. A novel on-board incubation experiment was employed to simulate the sudden surge of algal blooms to new estuarine waters and reveal possible outcomes. A dinoflagellate (Amphidinium carterae) and a diatom species (Thalassiosira weissflogii) which had bloomed in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) area were cultured to bloom densities and reintroduced back into PRE natural seawaters. The diatom showed better adaptation ability to the new environment and increased significantly after the incubation. Simultaneously, particle-attached (PA) prokaryotic community structure was strongly influenced by adding of the diatom, with some opportunistic prokaryotes significantly enhanced in the diatom treatment. Whereas the dinoflagellate population did not increase following incubation, and their PA prokaryotic community showed no significant differences relative to the control. Metagenomic analyzes revealed that labile carbohydrates and organic nitrogen produced by the diatom contributed to the surge of certain PA prokaryotes. Genomic properties of a bacteria strain, which is affiliated with genus GMD16E07 (Planctomycetaceae) and comprised up to 50% of PA prokaryotes in the diatom treatment, was described here for the first time. Notably, the association of Planctomycetaceae and T. weissflogii likely represents symbiotic mutualism, with the diatom providing organic matter for Planctomycetaceae and the bacteria supplying vitamins and detoxifying nitriles and hydrogen peroxides in exchange. Therefore, the close association between Planctomycetaceae and T. weissflogii promoted the growth of both populations, and eventually facilitated the diatom bloom establishment.

Panacibacter microcysteis sp. nov., isolated from a eutrophic reservoir during the Microcystis bloom period

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain DH6^T was isolated from fresh water of the Daechung Reservoir during the Microcystis bloom period. The strain grew at pH 6.0-8.5, at temperature 17-40 °C, and at 0-1% (w/v) NaCl concentration. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain DH6^T exhibits the highest similarity with Panacibacter ginsenosidivorans Gsoil 1550^T (96.6%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), and average amino acid identity (AAI) values of strain DH6^T compared to its related type strains were below 74.2%, 22.3%, and 74.8%, respectively. The predominant fatty acids (> 5.0%) were identified as iso-C_17:0 3-OH, iso-C_13:0, iso-C_15:0, C_17:0 2-OH, iso-C_11:0, anteiso-C_13:0, and iso-C_15:1 G. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified aminolipids, and three unidentified lipids. The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The genomic DNA G + C content was 42.6%. Collectively, strain DH6^T should be classified as a novel species within the genus Panacibacter, for which the name Panacibacter microcysteis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DH6^T (= KCTC 82471^T = LMG 32426^T).

Analysis of micropollutants in a marine outfall using network analysis and decision tree

The presence of micropollutants (MPs), including pharmaceutical, industrial, and pesticidal compounds, threatens both human health and the aquatic ecosystem. The development and extensive use of new chemicals have also inevitably led to the accumulation of MPs in aquatic environments. Recreational beaches are especially vulnerable to contamination, affecting humans and aquatic animals via the absorption of MPs in water during marine activities (e.g., swimming, sailing, and windsurfing). Additionally, marine outfalls in an urbanized coastal city can cause serious chemical and microbial pollution on recreational beaches, leading to an increase in adverse effects on public health and the ecological system. Therefore, the aim of this study was to, with the use of network and decision tree analyses, identify the features and factors that influence the change in MP concentrations in a marine outfall. These analyses were conducted to inspect the relationship between each MP and its hierarchical structure as well as hydrometeorological variables. Additionally, a risk analysis was conducted in this study in which the MPs were prioritized based on their optimized risk quotient values. During our monitoring of MP concentrations over time at the marine outfall, high concentrations of pharmaceutical and industrial compounds were detected when the tide level was low after rainfall. Furthermore, results of the risk analysis and the prioritization revealed that a total of 18 substances identified in our study posed a risk to the ecosystem; these include major ecotoxicologically hazardous substances such as telmisartan, mevinphos, and methiocarb. Results of the network analysis demonstrated distinct trends for pharmaceutical and industrial substances, whilst those for pesticide compounds were irregular. Additionally, the hierarchical structures for most MPs consisted of rainfall, tide level, and antecedent dry hours; this implies that these factors influence MP dynamics. These findings will be helpful for establishing chemical contamination management plans for recreational beaches in the future.

Co-occurrence of chromophytic phytoplankton and the Vibrio community during Phaeocystis globosa blooms in the Beibu Gulf

Accumulating research evidence has revealed that harmful algal blooms (HABs) can substantially affect the community structures of phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria in marine ecosystems. However, little is known about their species-specific interactions between phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria during the HABs period and about their interaction shifts in response to blooms. From this perspective, we investigated the co-occurrence of chromophytic phytoplankton and Vibrio during Phaeocystis globosa blooms in the Beibu Gulf. The results showed that Vibrio communities were distinct during the blooms, and P. globosa blooms resulted in a decline in phytoplankton alpha diversity, revealing that the blooms could affect their community compositions. The regression lines between the Shannon indices and Bray-Curtis distances of phytoplankton and Vibrio showed positive correlations with each other (p < 0.001), suggesting that they may have intrageneric symbiotic interactions overall. In addition, network analysis further demonstrated that relationships between phytoplankton and Vibrio were dominated by positive correlations, and more interaction modules were observed during the blooms, revealing that the blooms intensified synergistic association and mutual symbiotic interactions between them. Environmental factors (SiO₃^2-, NH₄⁺, NO₃^- and TN,) and P. globosa density more deeply affected network interactions between phytoplankton and Vibrio during the periods of P. globosa blooms than those before the blooms and after the blooms. This study provided new insight to elucidate community structure and interaction relationships between phytoplankton and Vibrio in response to P. globosa blooms and their ecological effects in marine ecosystems.

Ecological network analysis reveals distinctive microbial modules associated with heavy metal contamination of abandoned mine soils in Korea

Heavy metal pollution in soil around abandoned mine sites is one of the most critical environmental issues worldwide. Soil microbes form complex communities and perform ecological functions individually or in cooperation with other organisms to adapt to harsh environments. In this study, we investigated the distribution patterns of bacterial and fungal communities in non-contaminated and heavy metal-contaminated soil of the abandoned Samkwang mine in Korea to explore microbial interaction mechanisms and their modular structures. As expected, the bacterial and fungal community structures showed large differences depending on the degree of heavy metal contamination. The microbial network was divided into three modules based on the levels of heavy metal pollution: heavy metal-tolerant (HM-Tol), heavy metal-mid-tolerant (HM-mTol), and heavy metal-sensitive (HM-Sens) modules. Taxonomically, microbes assigned to Vicinamibacterales, Pedosphaeraceae, Nitrosomonadaceae, and Gemmatimonadales were the major groups constituting the HM-Tol module. Among the detected heavy metals (As, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn), copper concentrations played a key role in the formation of the HM-Tol module. In addition, filamentous fungi (Fusarium and Mortierella) showed potential interactions with bacteria (Nitrosomonadaceae) that could contribute to module stability in heavy metal-contaminated areas. Overall, heavy metal contamination was accompanied by distinct microbial communities, which could participate in the bioremediation of heavy metals. Analysis of the microbial interactions among bacteria and fungi in the presence of heavy metals could provide fundamental information for developing bioremediation mechanisms for the recovery of heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Biodiversity and Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of Margalefidinium Species in Jiaozhou Bay, China

Many Margalefidinium species are cosmopolitan harmful algal bloom (HAB) species that have caused huge economic and ecological damage. Despite extensive research on Margalefidinium species, the biodiversity and spatial-temporal dynamics of these species remain obscure. Jiaozhou Bay is an ideal area for HAB research, being one of the earliest marine survey areas in China. In this study, we carried out the first metabarcoding study on the temporal and spatial dynamics of Margalefidinium species using the 18S rDNA V4 region as the molecular marker and samples collected monthly at 12 sampling sites in Jiaozhou Bay in 2019. Two harmful Margalefidinium species (M. polykrikoides and M. fulvescens) were identified with potentially high genetic diversity (although we cannot rule out the possibility of intra-genome sequence variations). Both M. polykrikoides and M. fulvescens demonstrated strong temporal preference with a sharp peak of abundance in early autumn (September), but without showing strong location preference in Jiaozhou Bay. Our results revealed that temperature might be the main driver for their temporal dynamics. Knowledge of biodiversity and spatial-temporal dynamics of the Margalefidinium species may shed light on the understanding of mechanisms underlying strongly biased occurrences of Margalefidinium blooms recorded globally.

Seasonal succession of microbes in different size-fractions and their modular structures determined by both macro- and micro-environmental filtering in dynamic coastal waters

Microbes interact with each other in response to various environmental changes in coastal marine ecosystems. To explore how the macroenvironment (environmental filtering) and species-engineered microenvironment (niche construction) affect the ecological network of the marine microbiome in the highly dynamic coastal waters of Korea, we analyzed the modular structures of the microbial community and identified microbial interconnections in different size fractions for a year. Fluctuations in the macroenvironment, such as temperature and nutrient concentrations driven by seasonal changes, are the major factors in determining successive microbial modules. Compared to particle-associated (PA) microbes, free-living (FL) microbes seemed to be more affected by macroenvironmental filtering. Modules related to nutrients were further divided into various modules according to different lifestyles. In addition, a large transient discharge of the Changjiang (Yangtze River) in summer also formed a distinct microbial module, which was related to the high ammonia concentration arising from phytoplankton degradation. Microbes belonging to the SAR11, SAR86, and SAR116 clades, Flavobacteriaceae, and MG IIa-L showed repeated interconnections in temperature-related modules, while the SAR202 clade, Marinimicrobia, DEV007 clade, and Arctic97B-4 and Sva0996 marine groups displayed repeated connections in nutrient-related modules. These 'skeleton'-forming microbes created species-engineered microenvironments, further fine-tuning microbial modular structures. Furthermore, they serve as keystone species for module stability by linking interdependent microbial partners within their own modules through universally beneficial metabolic activities. Therefore, they could reinforce the ecological resilience of microbial communities under abiotic and biotic perturbations in dynamic coastal waters. In conclusion, both macro- and micro-environmental filtering were important for determining the seasonal succession of microbial community structures.

Year-to-year variation in phytoplankton biomass in an anthropogenically polluted and complex estuary: A novel paradigm for river discharge influence

We examined the effects of nutrient availability and turbidity on phytoplankton biomass over 9 years in Gwanyang Bay, Korea, which is an anthropogenically polluted and complex estuary. While dredging and reclamation shaped geochemical features, river discharge with low-turbidity water and sewage treatment plants contributed to nutrient loading. The replete levels of nutrients and short water-residence time suggest the inapplicability of the washout theory, whereas the presence of NH₄⁺ suppressed the growth of phytoplankton. A reduction in the river discharge caused a concomitant decline in the loading and dilution of suspended particles. All these features led to an increase in SPM, light limitation, and NH₄⁺ concentration. GLM estimates revealed negative effects of NH₄⁺ and SPM on chlorophyll a over 9 years while SEM verified synergistic effects of NH₄⁺ and SPM compared with positive effects of NO₂ + NO₃^-. Our findings provide new insights into phytoplankton bloom dynamics in Gwangyang Bay.

Enhanced Scenedesmus sp. growth in response to gibberellin secretion by symbiotic bacteria

Microalgae usually co-exist with bacteria, which may influence the microalgal growth, in aquatic environment. In this study, thirteen strains that can promote microalgal growth were isolated from Scenedesmus sp. LX1 culture. Additional results showed that these strains could secrete gibberellin (GA), which is a phytohormones, promoting the growth and metabolism of the Scenedesmus sp. LX1. Low concentration (0.1 mg L^-1) of GA can increase the microalgae biomass by 51% after 4 days. GA could enhance the photosynthetic activity by increasing the photosynthetic pigment content, such as culture after 2 h with low GA concentration (0.1 mg L^-1), chlorophyll a and β-carotene increased from 0.59 μg per 10⁶ cells to 0.72 μg per 10⁶ cells and from 0.20 μg per 10⁶ cells to 0.38 μg per 10⁶ cells, respectively. In addition, GA could also stimulate the dehydrogenase activity, ATP accumulation, and carbonic anhydrase activity to increase the metabolic activity of the microalgae. Interestingly, the microalgae can selectively enhance the bacterial GA secretion in turn, indicating that there was a specific feedback regulation mechanism between the microalgae and the bacteria. The results of this study show a new mechanism of symbiotic-bacteria that enhances microalgal growth. It's a great significance to understand the microalgal growth and water bloom in aquatic environment.
