A high-efficiency mediator-free Z-scheme Bi2MoO6/AgI heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Oxygen-deficient AgIO3 for efficiently photodegrading organic contaminants under natural sunlight

Defect engineering is regarded as an effective strategy to boost the photo-activity of photocatalysts for organic contaminants removal. In this work, abundant surface oxygen vacancies (Ov) are created on AgIO3 microsheets (AgIO3-OV) by a facile and controllable hydrogen chemical reduction approach. The introduction of surface Ov on AgIO3 broadens the photo-absorption region from ultraviolet to visible light, accelerates the photoinduced charges separation and migration, and also activates the formation of superoxide radicals (•O2-). The AgIO3-OV possesses an outstanding degradation rate constant of 0.035 min-1, for photocatalytic degrading methyl orange (MO) under illumination of natural sunlight with a light intensity is 50 mW/cm2, which is 7 and 3.5 times that of the pristine AgIO3 and C-AgIO3 (AgIO3 is calcined in air without generating Ov). In addition, the AgIO3-OV also exhibit considerable photoactivity for degrading other diverse organic contaminants, including azo dye (rhodamine B (RhB)), antibiotics (sulflsoxazole (SOX), norfloxacin (NOR), chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and ofloxacin (OFX)), and even the mixture of organic contaminants (MO-RhB and CTC-OFX). After natural sunlight illumination for 50 min, 41.4% of total organic carbon (TOC) for MO-RhB mixed solution can be decreased over AgIO3-OV. In a broad range of solution pH from 3 to 11 or diverse water bodies of MO solution, AgIO3-OV exhibits attractive activity for decomposing MO. The MO photo-degradation process and mechanism over AgIO3-OV under natural sunlight irradiation has been systemically investigated and proposed. The toxicities of MO and its degradation intermediates over AgIO3-OV are compared using Toxicity Estimation Software (T.E.S.T.). Moreover, the non-toxicity of both AgIO3-OV catalyst and treated antibiotic solution (CTC-OFX mixture) are confirmed by E. coli DH5a cultivation test, supporting the feasibility of AgIO3-OV catalyst to treat organic contaminants in real water under natural sunlight illumination.

Application of Photocatalysis and Sonocatalysis for Treatment of Organic Dye Wastewater and the Synergistic Effect of Ultrasound and Light

Organic dyes play vital roles in the textile industry, while the discharge of organic dye wastewater in the production and utilization of dyes has caused significant damage to the aquatic ecosystem. This review aims to summarize the mechanisms of photocatalysis, sonocatalysis, and sonophotocatalysis in the treatment of organic dye wastewater and the recent advances in catalyst development, with a focus on the synergistic effect of ultrasound and light in the catalytic degradation of organic dyes. The performance of TiO₂-based catalysts for organic dye degradation in photocatalytic, sonocatalytic, and sonophotocatalytic systems is compared. With significant synergistic effect of ultrasound and light, sonophotocatalysis generally performs much better than sonocatalysis or photocatalysis alone in pollutant degradation, yet it has a much higher energy requirement. Future research directions are proposed to expand the fundamental knowledge on the sonophotocatalysis process and to enhance its practical application in degrading organic dyes in wastewater.

ReS2 with unique trion behavior as a co-catalyst for enhanced sunlight hydrogen production

The interfacial catalytic reaction plays a crucial role in determining hydrogen production efficiency of a photocatalyst. In this work, hollow spherical nano-shell composite (g-C₃N₄/CdS/ReS₂) formed by graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), cadmium sulfide (CdS), and rhenium disulfide (ReS₂) was prepared for photocatalytic hydrogen production, with ReS₂ introduced as a relatively inexpensive co-catalyst with excellent performance. It was found that two-electron catalytic reaction took place in this photocatalytic system due to the unique trion behavior of ReS₂ co-catalyst, which greatly enhances the rate of photocatalytic hydrogen production. The tightly bound excitons in the ReS₂ co-catalyst could easily capture the photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic system to form trions, while g-C₃N₄ in the inner shell and CdS in the middle shell provided sufficient electrons for the formation of trions. The active edge sites of ReS₂ also facilitated the generation and desorption of hydrogen, which creates conditions favoring two-electron catalytic reaction. In addition, oxidation and reduction reactions occurred inside and outside of the hollow spherical nano-shell, respectively, which effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The unique trion behavior of ReS₂ alters the interfacial catalytic reaction compared to the widely used platinum (Pt) co-catalyst in photocatalytic hydrogen production, which provides a new approach for enhancing the activity of photocatalytic systems.

Bacterial cellulose flakes loaded with Bi2MoO6 nanoparticles and quantum dots for the photodegradation of antibiotic and dye pollutants

Effective strategies to improve charge separation in semiconductor particles are critical for improving the photodegradation of organic pollutants at levels sufficient for environmental applications. Herein, Bi₂MoO₆ (BMO_MOF), comprising both nanoparticles (NPs) and quantum dots (QDs), was synthesized from a bismuth-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) precursor. Surface defects on BMO_MOF, the combination of NPs and QDs, and modified energy band edges improved photogenerated charge separation and facilitated redox reactions. When compared to BMO derived from uncoordinated Bi, the BMO_MOF photocatalyst (PC) was more efficient at photodegrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), two widely-used antibiotics ubiquitous in wastewater, as well as the carcinogenic pollutant rhodamine B (RhB). BMO_MOF was then loaded on the biopolymer bacterial cellulose (BC) to further enhance photocatalytic performance and facilitate the recovery of the PC after water treatment processes. The novel BMO_MOF/BC photocatalytic flakes were significantly larger than pure BMO_MOF, and thus easier to recuperate. Furthermore, anchoring BMO_MOF on BC flakes augmented significantly the photodegradation of TCH, CIP, and RhB, mainly because hydroxyl groups in BC act as hole traps facilitating photogenerated electron-hole separation. Results obtained with BMO_MOF/BC highlight promising approaches to develop optimal PCs for aqueous pollutants degradation.

Rational design of S-scheme AgI/ZrTiO4-x heterojunctions for remarkably boosted norfloxacin degradation

Emerging S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts endowed with efficient charge separation and strong redox capacity have stimulated wide interests in dealing with environmental issues nowadays. In this work, we firstly fabricated the oxygen vacancy modified ZrTiO_4-x nanocrystals, which was further combined with AgI to build the defective S-scheme AgI/ZrTiO_4-x heterojunctions for visible-light photocatalytic norfloxacin degradation. The synthesized ZrTiO_4-x nanocrystals and AgI/ZrTiO_4-x heterojunctions displayed remarkably boosted norfloxacin degradation performance under visible-light irradiation. The reaction rate constant of the optimized AgI/ZrTiO_4-x-5% heterojunction is as high as 0.01419 min^-1, which is approximately 43.35 times that of AgI and 7.93 times that of ZrTiO_4-x nanocrystals, and far superior to those of commercial TiO₂ and commercial ZrO₂. The high-performance photocatalytic norfloxacin degradation could be mainly attributed to the formation of S-scheme charge transfer pathways and oxygen vacancy defects. More significantly, AgI/ZrTiO_4-x could also realize the effective photo-decomposition of other emerging pollutants. Finally, the visible-light photocatalytic performance and photocatalysis mechanism were investigated.

A composite photocatalytic system based on spent alkaline Zn-Mn batteries for toluene removal under multiple conditions

The resource utilization of spent alkaline Zn-Mn batteries (S-AZMB) has always been a hot issue in the field of energy regeneration and environmental protection. The cumbersome and complicated purification process is the reason for their limited recycling. Not long ago, we proved that unpurified S-AZMB can be used directly: construct a Z-scheme photocatalytic system by combining with commercial TiO₂ through high-temperature calcination. In order for this finding to be truly adopted by the application market, the high energy consumption calcination process needs to be improved urgently. In this work, we explore the temperature dependence of performance for the composite photocatalyst (TiO₂@S-AZMB). A series of experimental results confirm that lowering the calcination temperature not only conducive to improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, but also can significantly improve the environmental adaptability of the catalyst. Specifically, the catalyst synthesized by calcination temperature at 200 °C exhibits higher toluene removal efficiency than that at 500 °C under different initial concentration of pollutants, relative humidity, light intensity and oxygen content. This study not only further improves the photocatalytic performance of the composite catalyst, but also accords with the idea of energy saving and emission reduction, which provides more space for the possibility of recycling S-AZMB.

Nitrogen-doping coupled with cerium oxide loading co-modified graphitic carbon nitride for highly enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light

The increasingly serious pollution of antibiotics brings an enormous threat to the ecological environment and human health. Graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), as a popular photocatalytic material, is widely used in photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in water. In order to make up for the shortage of g-C₃N₄ monomer, CeO₂/N-doped g-C₃N₄ (CeNCN) composite photocatalysts co-modified with nitrogen doping and CeO₂ loading were designed and synthesized with the idea of expanding visible light absorption and promoting photogenerated carrier separation. CeNCN exhibits excellent photodegradation performance, the removal rate of tetracycline reached 80.09% within 60 min, which is much higher than that of g-C₃N₄ (CN) and N-doped g-C₃N₄ (NCN); and the quasi-first-order degradation rate constant is 0.0291, which is 7.86 and 2.29 times higher than CN and NCN. Electron spin resonance and free radical trapping experiments confirmed that h⁺, O₂^- and OH are the active substances in the photocatalytic system. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency of tetracycline still exceeds 75%, which indicates that CeNCN has good stability. This work proves that N-doping and CeO₂ loading can effectively broaden the photoresponse range of g-C₃N₄, facilitate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and provide a reference for the construction of g-C₃N₄-based photocatalyst with high-efficiency photodegradation activity.

Heterogeneous activation of persulfate by Bi2MoO6-CuS composite for efficient degradation of orange II under visible light

Here in, a special catalytic system of potassium persulfate (K₂S₂O₈, PS) activated by Bi₂MoO₆-CuS composite was established for the orange II (OII) degradation under visible light. The Bi₂MoO₆-CuS composite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. The structure, morphology, light absorption and photocatalytic properties of the composite were respectively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The removal efficiency of OII degradation in the Bi₂MoO₆-CuS/PS/vis system reached to 98% within 80 min, which was much higher than that of either Bi₂MoO₆ or CuS alone. A feasible mechanism analysis of OII degradation was proposed and validated by simple classical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The high removal efficiency by the nanocomposite could be attributed to highly active species of O₂^·-, ·OH and SO₄^•- radicals in the Bi₂MoO₆-CuS photocatalytic oxidation system. Moreover, the composite material retained its activation performance even after 5 degradation cycles, which suggested its high stability.
