Effects of spatially heterogeneous warming on gut microbiota, nutrition and gene flow of a heat-sensitive ungulate population

Gut microbiota contribute to cold adaptation in mammals-primates and ungulates

Gut microbiota play an influential role in how animals adapt to extreme environments. Two phylogenetically distant mammals, Yunnan snub-nosed monkey and reindeer both adapted to frigid environments. Metagenomic analyses revealed they developed similar cold adaptation strategies in response to food scarcity (enhanced fiber degradation and nitrogen balance maintenance), energy shortages (increased short-chain fatty acid [SCFA] synthesis), and a constant body temperature sustainment (stimulation of non-shivering thermogenesis [NST]). Moreover, they evolved distinct adaptation strategies to cope with different cold ecosystems. Yunnan snub-nosed monkey adapt to high-altitude hypoxia environment through enhancing ability to synthesize lactate and metabolize purine, while reindeer adapt to extreme cold environment through increasing blood flow, strengthening urea cycling, and enriching fat storage associated bacteria. Notably, reindeer microbiota uniquely enriched cholesterol-degrading bacteria, potentially mitigating cardiovascular risks from lipid storage. Our study expands the knowledge of how gut microbiome promotes cold adaptation through shared and specialized mechanisms shaped by different phylogenetic and ecological contexts.

Climate change and deer in boreal and temperate regions: From physiology to population dynamics and species distributions

Climate change causes far-reaching disruption in nature, where tolerance thresholds already have been exceeded for some plants and animals. In the short term, deer may respond to climate through individual physiological and behavioral responses. Over time, individual responses can aggregate to the population level and ultimately lead to evolutionary adaptations. We systematically reviewed the literature (published 2000-2022) to summarize the effect of temperature, rainfall, snow, combined measures (e.g., the North Atlantic Oscillation), and extreme events, on deer species inhabiting boreal and temperate forests in terms of their physiology, spatial use, and population dynamics. We targeted deer species that inhabit relevant biomes in North America, Europe, and Asia: moose, roe deer, wapiti, red deer, sika deer, fallow deer, white-tailed deer, mule deer, caribou, and reindeer. Our review (218 papers) shows that many deer populations will likely benefit in part from warmer winters, but hotter and drier summers may exceed their physiological tolerances. We found support for deer expressing both morphological, physiological, and behavioral plasticity in response to climate variability. For example, some deer species can limit the effects of harsh weather conditions by modifying habitat use and daily activity patterns, while the physiological responses of female deer can lead to long-lasting effects on population dynamics. We identified 20 patterns, among which some illustrate antagonistic pathways, suggesting that detrimental effects will cancel out some of the benefits of climate change. Our findings highlight the influence of local variables (e.g., population density and predation) on how deer will respond to climatic conditions. We identified several knowledge gaps, such as studies regarding the potential impact on these animals of extreme weather events, snow type, and wetter autumns. The patterns we have identified in this literature review should help managers understand how populations of deer may be affected by regionally projected futures regarding temperature, rainfall, and snow.

Comparison of gut microbiota between immigrant and native populations of the Silver-eared Mesia (Leiothrix argentauris) living in mining area

The complex gut bacterial communities have a major impact on organismal health. However, knowledge of the effects of habitat change on the gut microbiota of wild birds is limited. In this study, we characterized the gut microbiota of two different subspecies of the Silver-eared Mesia (Leiothrix argentauris), the native subspecies (L. a. rubrogularis) and immigrant subspecies (L. a. vernayi), using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. These two subspecies live in a trace metal-contaminated area, and L. a. vernayi was trafficked. They are an excellent system for studying how the gut microbiome of wild animal changes when they move to new habitats. We hypothesized that the immigrant subspecies would develop the same adaptations as the native subspecies in response to habitat changes. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the composition, diversity, or functional metabolism of gut microbiota between native and immigrant subspecies under the combined action of similar influencing factors (the p values of all analyses of variance >0.05). In addition, the composition and functional metabolism of gut microbiota in two subspecies showed adaptation against trace metal damage. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis revealed that Massilia in the intestinal microbiota of immigrant subspecies was significantly higher than that of native subspecies, suggesting that immigrant subspecies suffered habitat change. Finally, we found that these two subspecies living in the mining area had an extremely high proportion of pathogenic bacteria in their gut microbiota (about 90%), much higher than in other species (about 50%) living in wild environment. Our results revealed the adaptation of intestinal microbiota of immigrant Silver-eared Mesias under heavy metals stress, which would provide guidance for biodiversity conservation and pollution management in mining area.
