Submerged macrophytes regulate diurnal nitrous oxide emissions from a shallow eutrophic lake: A case study of Lake Wuliangsuhai in the temperate arid region of China

Mitigated N2O emissions from submerged-plant-covered aquatic ecosystems on the Changjiang River Delta

Submerged plants affect nitrogen cycling in aquatic ecosystems. However, whether and how submerged plants change nitrous oxide (N2O) production mechanism and emissions flux remains controversial. Current research primarily focuses on the feedback from N2O release to variation of substrate level and microbial communities. It is deficient in connecting the relative contribution of individual N2O production processes (i.e., the N2O partition). Here, we attempted to offer a comprehensive understanding of the N2O mitigation mechanism in aquatic ecosystems on the Changjiang River Delta according to stable isotopic techniques, metagenome-assembly genome analysis, and statistical analysis. We found that the submerged plant reduced 45 % of N2O emissions by slowing down the dissolved inorganic nitrogen conversion velocity to N2O in sediment (Vf-[DIN]sed). It was attributed to changing the N2O partition and suppressing the potential capacity of net N2O production (i.e., nor/nosZ). The dominated production processes showed a shift with increasing excess N2O. Meanwhile, distinct shift thresholds of planted and unplanted habitats reflected different mechanisms of stimulated N2O production. The hotspot zone of N2O production corresponded to high nor/nosZ and unsaturated oxygen (O2) in unplanted habitat. In contrast, planted habitat hotspot has lower nor/nosZ and supersaturated O2. O2 from photosynthesis critically impacted the activities of N2O producers and consumers. In summary, the presence of submerged plants is beneficial to mitigate N2O emissions from aquatic ecosystems.

Seasonal and spatial variations of greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4 and N2O) emissions from urban ponds in Brussels

Freshwaters have been recognized as important sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere. However, urban ponds have received little attention even though their number is increasing due to expanding urbanisation globally. Ponds are frequently associated to urban green spaces that provide several ecosystemic services such as cooling local climate, regulating the water cycle, and acting as small carbon sinks This study aims to identify and understand the processes producing GHGs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) in the urban ponds of the temperate European city of Brussels in Belgium. 22 relatively small ponds (0.1-4.6 ha) surrounded by contrasted landscape (strictly urban, bordered by cropland or by forest), were sampled during four seasons in 2021-2022. The mean ± standard deviation was 3,667 ± 2,904 ppm for the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), 2,833 ± 4,178 nmol L-1 for CH4, and 273 ± 662% for N2O saturation level (%N2O). Relationships of GHGs with oxygen and water temperature suggest that biological processes controlled pCO2, CH4 concentration and%N2O. However, pCO2 was also controlled by external inputs as indicated by the higher values of pCO2 in the smaller ponds, more subject to external inputs than larger ones. The opposite was observed for CH4 concentration that was higher in larger ponds, closer to the forest in the city periphery, and with higher macrophyte cover. N2O concentrations, as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen, were higher closer to the city center, where atmospheric nitrogen deposition was potentially higher. The total GHG emissions from the Brussels ponds were estimated to 1kT CO2-eq per year and were equivalent to the carbon sink of urban green spaces.

Long-term variations in external phosphorus inputs and riverine phosphorus export in a typical arid and semiarid irrigation watershed

Excessive phosphorus (P) along with drained water from farmland in the arid and semiarid watersheds when entering into water bodies brings about serious environmental problems in the aquatic ecosystem. It is critical to explore variations in watershed P balance and the relationship between anthropogenic P input and riverine total phosphorus (TP) export in a typical irrigation watersheds. In this study, long-term anthropogenic P variations in Ulansuhai Nur watershed (UNW), a typical irrigation watershed in Yellow River basin, was investigated using a quantitative Net Anthropogenic Phosphorus Input (NAPI) budget model. The results showed that annual NAPI exhibited a significant upward trend with a multi-year average of 2541.6 kg P km^-2 yr^-1 in the UNW. Hotspots for watershed NAPI were discovered in Linhe and Hangjin Houqi counties. Chemical P fertilizers and livestock breeding were two dominated sources of NAPI. Annual riverine TP export showed a significantly declined trend with a net decrease of 80.6%. The export ratio of watershed NAPI was 0.6%, lower than those reported for other watersheds worldwide. There was a significant positive linear correlation between NAPI and riverine TP export from 2005 to 2009. However, after 2009, riverine TP export exhibited a decreased trend with increasing watershed NAPI, which was attributed to environmental treatment measures. By reconstructing riverine TP export without the impact of pollution treatment measures, annual average reduction amount of riverine TP export from 2009 to 2019 was estimated to be 237.2 ton, 47.2% and 52.8% of which were attributed to the point and nonpoint sources measures. This study not only widens the application scope of NAPI budget method, but also provides useful information of nutrient management and control in the arid and semiarid irrigation watershed.
