Abstract
The degradation of animal carcasses can lead to rapid waste release (e.g., pathogenic bacteria, viruses, prions, or parasites) and also result in nutrient accumulation in the surrounding environment. However, how viral profile responds and influences nutrient pool (carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S)) in polluted water caused by animal carcass decomposition had not been explored. Here, we combined metagenomic analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and water physicochemical assessment to explore the response of viral communities under different temperatures (23 °C, 26 °C, 29 °C, 32 °C, and 35 °C) in water polluted by cadaver, as well as compare the contribution of viral/bacterial communities on water nutrient pool. We found that a total of 15,240 viral species were classified and mainly consisted of Siphoviridae. Both temperature and carrion reduced the viral diversity and abundance. Only a small portion of the viruses (∼8.8 %) had significant negative correlations with temperature, while most were not sensitive. Our results revealed that the viruses had lager contribution on nutrient pool than bacteria. Besides, viral-related functional genes involved in C, N, P and S cycling. These functional genes declined during carcass decomposition and covered part of the central nutrient cycle metabolism (including carbon sugar transformation, denitrification, P mineralization and extracelluar sulfate transfer, etc.). Our result implies that human regulation of virus communities may be more important than bacterial communities in regulating and managing polluted water quality and nutrition.

Abstract
Understanding the effects of warming on bacterial communities is essential for predicting microbial responses to climate change in aquatic ecosystems. However, the mechanisms through which warming influences bacterial diversity and stability in lake ecosystems remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment in Lake Bosten, a climate change hotspot, with three temperature scenarios (26 °C, 29 °C, and 32 °C), and investigated bacterial diversity, community composition, potential functions, and stability. Our findings revealed that temperature, time, and their interactions significantly reduced bacterial α-diversity (two-way ANOVA: P < 0.05). Warming altered bacterial potential metabolic functions, with decreases in methanotrophy and methylotrophy and increases in phototrophy and photoheterotrophy. Warming also increased species replacement within bacterial communities, indicating a dynamic shift in community composition. Network analysis indicated heightened complexity under higher temperatures but also a decrease in bacterial stability, evidenced by higher average variation degree (AVD), increased vulnerability, and reduced robustness. Overall, our study highlights the profound effects of warming on the ecological dynamics of lake bacterial communities, underscoring the need for further research to understand and mitigate the impacts of global climate change on aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
N-cycling processes mediated by microorganisms are directly linked to the eutrophication of lakes and ecosystem health. Exploring the variation and influencing factors of N-cycling-related genes is of great significance for controlling the eutrophication of lakes. However, seasonal dynamics of genomic information encoding nitrogen (N) cycling in sediments of eutrophic lakes have not yet been clearly addressed. We collected sediments in the Baiyangdian (BYD) Lake in four seasons to explore the dynamic variation of N-cycling functional genes based on a shotgun metagenome sequencing approach and to reveal their key influencing factors. Our results showed that dissimilatory nitrate reduction (DNRA), assimilatory nitrate reduction (ANRA), and denitrification were the dominant N-cycling processes, and the abundance of nirS and amoC were higher than other functional genes by at least one order of magnitude. Functional genes, such as nirS, nirK and amoC, generally showed a consistent decreasing trend from the warming season (i.e., spring, summer, fall) to the cold season (i.e., winter). Furthermore, a significantly higher abundance of nitrification functional genes (e.g., amoB, amoC and hao) in spring and denitrification functional genes (e.g., nirS, norC and nosZ) in fall were observed. N-cycling processes in four seasons were influenced by different dominant environmental factors. Generally, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) or sediment organic matter (SOM), water temperature (T) and antibiotics (e.g., Norfloxacin and ofloxacin) were significantly correlated with N-cycling processes. The findings imply that sediment organic carbon and antibiotics may be potentially key factors influencing N-cycling processes in lake ecosystems, which will provide a reference for nitrogen management in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract
Clarifying the biogeochemical mechanism of nitrate (NO3-) in the vadose zone-groundwater system, particularly in agricultural contexts, is crucial for mitigating groundwater NO3- pollution. However, comprehensive studies on the impacts of changes in chemical indicators and microbial communities on NO3- are still lacking. This paper aims to address this gap by employing hydrogeochemistry, stable isotopes, and microbial techniques to assess the NO3- biogeochemical processes in the vadose zone-groundwater system. The findings suggested that NO3- in upper soil layers was primarily influenced by plant root absorption, assimilation, and nitrification processes. The oxygen contents gradually decreased with the nitrification process, resulting in the occurrence of the denitrification. However, denitrification predominantly occurred in the 60-80 cm soil layer in the study area. The limited thickness of the denitrification layer results in less NO3- consumption, leading to increased NO3- leaching into groundwater. Hydrochemical and isotopic characteristics further indicated that groundwater NO3- concentrations were mainly controlled by nitrification, followed by denitrification and mixing processes. The 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed great influences of soil sampling depths and groundwater NO3- concentrations on the microbial community structure. Additionally, the PICRUSt2-based prediction results demonstrated a stronger potential for dissimilatory reduction of NO3- to ammonium (DNRA) in both soil and groundwater compared to the other processes, potentially due to the widespread presence of the nrfH functional genes. However, the chemical indicators and isotopes used in this study did not support the occurrence of DNRA process in the vadose zone-groundwater system. This finding highlights the importance of an integrated approach combining microbiological, isotopic, and hydrogeochemical data to comprehensive understanding biogeochemical processes. The study developed a conceptual model elucidating the NO3- biogeochemical processes in the vadose zone-groundwater system within an agricultural area, contributing to enhanced comprehension and advancement of sustainable management practices for groundwater nitrogen.

Abstract
Unraveling how climate warming affects microorganisms and the underlying mechanisms has been a hot topic in climate change and microbial ecology. To date, many studies have reported microbial responses to climate warming, especially in soil ecosystems, however, knowledge of how warming influences microeukaryotic diversity, network complexity and stability in lake ecosystems, in particular the possible underlying mechanisms, is largely unknown. To address this gap, we conducted 20 mesocosms spanning five temperature scenarios (26 °C, 27.5 °C, 29 °C, 30.5 °C, and 32 °C) in Lake Bosten, a hotspot for studying climate change, and investigated microeukaryotic communities using 18S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results demonstrated that warming, time, and their interactions significantly reduced microeukaryotic α-diversity (two-way ANOVA: P<0.01). Although warming did not significantly affect microeukaryotic community structure (ANOSIM: P>0.05), it enhanced species turnover. Microeukaryotic networks exhibited distinct co-occurrence patterns and topological properties across temperature scenarios. Warming reduced network complexity and stability, as well as altered species interactions. Collectively, these findings are likely to have implications for ecological management of lake ecosystems, in particular semi-arid and arid regions, and for predicting ecological consequences of climate change.
