A critical review on the pathways of carbamazepine transformation products in oxidative wastewater treatment processes

How Rhodococcus ruber accelerated biodegradation of benzophenone-3

Benzophenone-3 (2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, BP-3) poses risks to human health and natural ecosystems, and means to improve its biodegradation are necessary. When a small mass of Rhodococcus ruber, isolated from BP-3-acclimated biomass, was bioaugmented into the acclimated biomass, BP-3 removal was accelerated by 120 %. The first step of BP-3 biodegradation generates either 2,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (5-OH-BP-3) or benzophenone-1 (2,4-dihydoxybenzophenone, BP-1). BP-1 is generated by sequential demethylation, hydroxylation, and dehydrogenation reactions, while 5-OH-BP-3 is generated by one mono-oxygenation reaction. Of the two intermediates, 5-OH-BP-3 exhibited stronger inhibition than BP-1 or the original BP-3. Gene-completion mapping showed that R. ruber contains genes for demethylase, hydrolase, dehydrogenase, and mono-oxygenase reaction, which means that R. ruber could generate the less-toxic BP-1. Thus, bioaugmentation of R. ruber into BP-3-acclimated biomass eliminated the accumulation of 5-OH-BP-3 and, consequently, accelerated of BP-3 biodegradation via BP-1.

Evaluating the behavior and environmental risks of carbamazepine and its metabolites in soil aquifer treatment: Insights from deconjugation dynamics and toxicity assessment

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment has been a growing concern. Recent studies highlight the ecological risks of pharmaceuticals, but most risk assessments focus on the parent drug, neglecting metabolites. This study examines the behavior and environmental risks of carbamazepine (CBZ) and its metabolites in soil aquifer treatment (SAT) for wastewater reclamation. Findings indicate that CBZ metabolites' total concentration exceeds that of CBZ. Notably, carbamazepine-N-glucuronide (CBZ-N-Glu) concentration decreased from 48.12 ng/L to undetectable levels during SAT, while CBZ concentration increased from 64.87 to 95 ng/L, suggesting possible deconjugation of CBZ-N-Glu. Batch and column experiments confirmed the hypothesis, showing a gradual disappearance of CBZ-Glu and a corresponding rise in CBZ concentration when CBZ-N-Glu was spiked into a recirculated SAT system. Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) analysis revealed that CBZ exhibits higher acute and chronic toxicity, with metabolites showing varying levels of developmental toxicity. The study also evaluates the persistence, mobility, and toxicity (PMT) characteristics of CBZ and its metabolites, highlighting CBZ-N-Glu's particularly adverse PMT characteristics compared to CBZ. In summary, the residual pharmaceuticals in the reclaimed water process should be evaluated systematically, considering both the parent compounds and their metabolites.

Efficient degradation of carbamazepine and metagenomic investigations of anodic biofilm in microbial fuel cells

Environmental contamination with carbamazepine is a considerable global problem. In this study, two-compartment microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were constructed to investigate the degradation performance of carbamazepine, and the degradation mechanism was further explored by using metagenomic analysis. The results showed that MFCs exhibited excellent carbamazepine removal performance and also generated electricity. The removal rate of carbamazepine reached 73.56% over the 72-h operation period, which was 3.09 times higher than that of the traditional anaerobic method, and the peak voltage of the MFCs could reach 416 mV. Metagenomics revealed significant differences in microbial community composition between MFCs and the traditional anaerobic method (p < 0.05), and Proteobacteria (81.57%) was predominant bacterial phyla during the degradation of carbamazepine by MFCs. Among them, the microbial communities at the genus level were mainly composed of Pseudomonas, Pusillimonas, Burkholderia, Stenotrophomonas, Methyloversatilis and Nitrospirillum. Kyoto Encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathway analysis showed that the number of genes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism increased by 85.12% and 142.25%, respectively. Importantly, a greater number of genes of microbial grown on the surface of anode were assigned to denitrification and the degradation of aromatic compounds. This research provides a cost-effective method for treating wastewater contaminated with carbamazepin.

Preparation of Cobalt-Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Activated Peroxymonosulfate Degradation of Carbamazepine

Cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen and cobalt species enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Radical scavenging assays and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed that radical and nonradical pathways contributed to CBZ degradation, with the nonradical mechanism being predominant. This research presents the development of a novel PMS catalyst, synthesized through an efficient and stable method, which provides a cost-effective solution for the remediation of organic contaminants in water.
