Study on the elimination characteristics of smoke particles with different materials using electric agglomeration technology

Fire smoke, consisting of solid particles and liquid droplets, poses risks of asphyxiation, poisoning, making it a significant contributor to fire-related fatalities and environmental pollution. The exploration of effective smoke control methods represents a vital approach to reducing the threat of fire smoke to public health and safety. This study aims to determine the characteristics of elimination for the fire smoke generated from burning four typical materials, thereby validating the universality of electric agglomeration smoke elimination technology. The results indicate that the elimination efficiency of electric agglomeration varies with the material type of the smoke. The rate of change in smoke transmittance from fast to slow is: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), wood, and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), respectively. With an external potential of 4 kV, PVC smoke reaches the safe threshold after 12.1 s, while SBR smoke achieves it in just 4.9 s. Analysis of the microscopic morphology of agglomerates with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that particle size distribution is an important factor affecting electric agglomeration elimination. This is because larger initial particles carry a greater charge, enabling the formation of larger agglomerates for more efficient removal. This study provides theoretical guidance for the practical application of electric agglomeration in eliminating smoke particles.

Bifunctional ZIF-8 Grown Webs for Advanced Filtration of Particulate and Gaseous Matters: Effect of Charging Process on the Electrostatic Capture of Nanoparticles and Sulfur Dioxide

Metal-organic framework (MOF), an emerging class of porous hybrid inorganic-organic crystals, has been applied for various environmental remediation strategies including liquid and air filtration. In this study, the role of the zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) was explored on the charge trapping ability and its contribution to capturing the targeted pollutants of NaCl nanoparticles and SO₂ gas. Poly(lactic acid) fibers with controlled surface pores were electrospun using water vapor-induced phase separation, and the fiber surface was uniformly coated with ZIF-8 crystals via an in situ growth method. As a novel process approach, the corona charging process was applied to the ZIF-8 grown webs. The ZIF-8 promoted the charge trapping in the corona process, and the charged ZIF-8 web showed a significantly improved electrostatic filtration efficiency. Also, the charged ZIF-8 web showed an enhanced SO₂ capture ability, both in the static and dynamic air flow states, demonstrating the applicability as a bifunctional filter for both particulate and gaseous matters. The approach of this study is novel in that both particulate and gas capture capabilities were associated with the charge trapping ability of ZIF-8, implementing the corona charging process to the ZIF-8 webs.

Model-Based Fiber Diameter Determination Approach to Fine Particulate Matter Fraction (PM2.5) Removal in HVAC Systems

Particulate Matter (PM) is a general term to classify air pollutants consisting of airborne particles. The particles vary in composition and size, and the sizes of particles range from 2.5 µm (PM2.5) to 10 µm (PM10). Anthropogenic activity (e.g., industrial processes or fuel/waste combustion) stands as the main emission source of PM. Due to the fact that indoor PM penetrates from the outside to indoor air, Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) filtration systems may play a significant role in decreasing air pollution indoors. The section of the respiratory tract affected by particulate matter depends on the particle size. The smaller the fraction, the more deeply it can enter into lungs and bronchi, causing a series of health problems. Conventional electret air filters applied in HVAC systems are not able to efficiently remove PM2.5 (e.g., huge gaps between thick fibers and unintentional elimination of electrostatic effects). The electrospinning process allows for the production of fibers of diverse diameters, including ultrathin yarns. The following work presents the axial length scale χχ  estimation method for the given conditions and experimental results. According to this approach, it is possible to find out what parameters should be used to produce materials at certain fiber diameters and to capture fine particulate matter fractions (PM2.5). This research refers to poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) fibers. The most important advantages, limitations, and challenges of the presented methodology are detected and discussed in this work.
