Abstract
Artificial light exposure during nighttime, including constant light (LL), is an increasingly prevalent environmental occurrence linked to impaired mood and cognitive impairments in both humans and animal models. Dopamine and dopamine 1 receptors are well known to modulate circadian rhythms and mood. This study investigated the effects of LL on anxiety-like, depressive-like, and cognitive behaviors in male and female C57BL/6J mice and assessed whether consumption of SKF-38393, a dopamine 1 receptor agonist, can mitigate these negative behavioral outcomes. Mice were exposed to LL or a standard 12:12 light:dark cycle (LD) for 6 weeks, with subgroups receiving either SKF-38393 or water. All mice had their circadian rhythms continuously monitored and were placed within behavioral tests that assayed their anxiety-like, depressive-like, and learning and memory behaviors. Behavioral assays revealed that LL increased hyperactivity and anxiety-like behaviors, which were mitigated by SKF-38393 consumption in both sexes. In addition, male mice exhibited anhedonia under LL, which was alleviated by SKF-38393, whereas female mice were resistant to LL-induced anhedonia. Sex differences emerged in fluid consumption independent of lighting condition, with females consuming more SKF-38393, and in responses to DA on behavior, including novel object recognition and exploration. These results indicate that low dose oral consumption of dopamine 1 receptor agonists can ameliorate some of the negative behavioral effects of LL exposure. This study highlights the complex interplay between chronic light, dopamine, and sex in influencing mood and behavior, suggesting potential modulatory roles for dopamine 1 receptor agonists in regulating behavioral outcomes to circadian disturbances.

Abstract
Background In previous observational studies and meta-analyses, childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is found to have a significant association with screen time. However, the causal associations between them remain unclear. Method This study performed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to confirm the causality between screen time and childhood ADHD. Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets derived from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and the UK Biobank were used to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with exposure and outcome. Four categories of datasets were selected to represent screen time. The SNPs that are significantly associated with exposure data (P < 5e-08) and have a strong correlation with the exposure in the F-statistic (F > 10) were selected as instrumental variables. This study also used the PhenoScanner V2 database and the LDlink webtool to exclude confounding factors, and the MR-PRESSO method (p < 0.05) was employed to eliminate outliers with bias. Five commonly used methods were employed to assess the interaction and the Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) method was utilized as the primary basis for determining the MR estimates in this study. Results The MR analysis revealed that the length of mobile phone use (OR, 1.848; 95% CI, 1.3360-2.5558; p=2.07e-4) and the time spent watching television (OR, 2.104; 95% CI, 1.3958-3.1703; p=3.8e-4) increased the risk of childhood ADHD. Although the causal relationships were exclusively identified through the IVW and weighted median methods, the results retained their statistical significance following correction. In the reverse analysis, no evidence was found to support an effect of childhood ADHD on screen time. The sensitivity analysis conducted on the significant findings revealed no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Conclusion This study provides some evidence for the causality of screen time and childhood ADHD. Given the limitations of our study, further research is required to comprehensively investigate this relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Excessive screen use in early school age is associated with worsened health habits and negative child development in later age. We aimed to assess the time spent on modern and traditional screen-based devices and examine its associations with socio-demographic characteristics. METHODS This population-based cross-sectional observation study was conducted in Czechia, Slovakia and Finland between April and June 2021. Participants (N = 1,915) were parents/caregivers of children attending elementary school grades 1 to 3, selected by stratified random sampling. Children's daily leisure screen time (LST) based on parental reports was the main outcome. Descriptive statistics, mean comparison and linear regression analysis were used for the analysis. RESULTS The average daily LST was found to be as high as 3.5 hours and significantly associated with most socio-demographic variables. Eighty percent of children exceeded the threshold of two hours of LST per day, which was formerly introduced by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The most important predictor of LST in children was having their screen-based device(s) for their exclusive personal use (EPU). Linear regression with all predictors assessed together confirmed the significant effect of the screen-based devices' EPU, the child's sex and grade, the child's birth order and the parent's education, even when controlled for media parenting practices. CONCLUSIONS Given the widespread availability of smartphones for exclusive personal use among young children, the regulation of EPU and the reinforcement of effective media parenting practices, particularly in families with lower education and income, are critical public health strategies to mitigate the negative impact of excessive screen time on child development and overall well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The 24-hour movement behavior (24-HMB) guidelines recommend that children and adolescents (youth) should limit screen time (ST), get an adequate amount of sleep (SL), and engage in sufficient physical activity (PA) to ensure health and healthy development. Meeting 24-HMB guidelines is associated with positive mental health outcomes (e.g., social and emotional function) in the general population. However, it is unclear whether such findings extend to youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Thus, we examined associations of meeting 24-HMB guidelines with social and emotional function in youth with comorbid ASD/ADHD. METHODS Data from the 2020-2021 National Survey of Children's Health - a U.S. national, population-based, cross-sectional study - were used. We extracted and analyzed data on youth (aged between 6 and 17 years) diagnosed with comorbidity of ASD/ADHD. Data on movement behaviors (PA, ST, and SL) and specific outcome variables (social function and emotional function) were collected through caregiver-proxy reports. Logistic regressions were performed to examine the associations between meeting 24-HMB guidelines and social and emotional outcomes adjusting for covariates (e.g., age, sex, ethnicity, weight status, birth status, socio-economic status, and receiving medication/behavioral treatment). RESULTS Among 979 children and adolescents with comorbid ASD/ADHD, only 3.8 % met all three 24-HMB guidelines. In total, 45.0 % of participants met at least one guideline, and 25.5 % of those met at least two guidelines. Compared to those who did not meet any 24-HMB guidelines, meeting SL + ST guidelines was significantly associated with lower odds of poorer social function (being bullied: OR = 0.3, 95%CI [0.1-0.7]; arguing: OR = 0.2, 95%CI[0.1-0.4]). Furthermore, meeting PA + ST + SL guidelines was associated with lower odds of poorer emotional function (depression: OR = 0.5, 95%CI[0.3-0.7]). CONCLUSION Meeting 24-HMB guidelines was associated with better social and emotional function in U.S. youth with comorbid ASD/ADHD; however, currently very few with comorbid ASD/ADHD meet all 24-HMB guidelines. These results emphasize the importance of promoting adherence to the 24-HMB guidelines among youth facing the challenges of comorbid ASD/ADHD. These cross-sectional findings point to the need for further empirical evidence from longitudinal studies to support our conclusions.

Abstract
COVID-19 pandemic confinement caused changes in families and children's routines worldwide. Studies conducted at the beginning of the pandemic have examined the harmful effects of these changes on mental health, including sleep disturbances. As sleep is essential for optimal childhood development, this study was designed to determine preschool-aged (3-6 years old) children's sleep parameters and mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. Using a cross-sectional design, a survey was applied to parents of preschool children, inquiring about their children's confinement status, routine changes, and electronics use. The parents responded to the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire to assess children's sleep and mental well-being. To provide objective sleep data, the children wore wrist actigraphy for seven days. Fifty-one participants completed the assessment. The children's mean age was 5.2 years, and the prevalence of sleep disturbances was 68.6%. The use of electronic tablets in the bedroom near bedtime and symptoms of mental health deterioration (i.e., emotional distress and behavioral difficulties) were associated with sleep disturbances and their severity. The COVID-19 pandemic's confinement-related routine changes greatly impacted preschool children's sleep and well-being. We recommend establishing age-tailored interventions to manage children at higher risk.

Abstract
Background: Systematic reviews conducted on sleep disturbances in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have found inconsistent results due to the presence of several moderating variables which were not controlled for in previous studies. The aim of this study was to examine sleep disturbances in children with ADHD compared to their typically developing peers after controlling for moderating variables (age, sex, medication status, body mass index, and psychiatric and medical comorbidities). Methods: ADHD was diagnosed using DSM-IV-TR criteria (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and Conners’ Parent Rating Scales. Children recruited (aged 6−12 years) for the ADHD group (n = 40) met the following criteria: IQ > 80, unmedicated, and no psychiatric or medical comorbidities. The control group consisted of age- and sex-matched typically developing peers (n = 40). Sleep was assessed subjectively (through parent reported questionnaires and sleep logs) and objectively (using video polysomnography). Results: 65% of children with ADHD had a sleep disorder, as compared to 17% of controls. The ADHD group reported more sleep disturbances and disorders, both on subjective measures and objective measures. Conclusions: Sleep disturbances and primary sleep disorders in children with ADHD exist independent of moderating variables and differences in sleep assessment methods, thereby bolstering support for previously documented literature on the ADHD and sleep connection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the occurrence of sleep disorders (SD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children with typical absence seizures (TAS) compared to control children and to evaluate the impact of epilepsy-related factors on sleep and attention in children with TAS. METHODS The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and the ADHD rating scale were filled in by parents of a cohort composed by 82 children aged from 5 to 15.6 years, 49% of boys (41 with TAS with a syndromic diagnosis of childhood absence epilepsy and 41 controls). For children with TAS, the Pediatric Epilepsy Side Effects Questionnaire was completed. Statistical analyses were conducted in order to compare sleep and attention scores between groups. In children with TAS, a correlation was computed between these scores. Logistics regression models were conducted to identify predictors of excessive diurnal sleepiness and inattention in children with TAS. RESULTS Compared to controls, children with TAS had higher total scores for subjective sleep (mean 42.9 vs 38.3, p = 0.05) and attention disorders (mean 16.8 vs 11.6, p = 0.01), especially for excessive diurnal sleepiness (mean 3.9 vs 3.2, p = 0.02) and inattention (mean 9.3 vs 5.6, p = 0.003) components. In children with TAS, sleep problems were significantly under-reported by parents. Sleep disorders symptoms as breathing-related sleep disturbance, excessive diurnal sleepiness or naps at or after 7 years of age were reported. Subjective sleep and attention disorders were significantly correlated (r = 0.43, p = 0.01). Subjective excessive diurnal sleepiness may be the result of a polytherapy (p = 0.05) or a side effect of anti-seizure medication (ASM) (p = 0.03) but children without medication side effects also reported subjective SD. In children with TAS, the risk of inattention symptoms was increased in boys (p = 0.02), with a high BMI (p = 0.05), or with ASM side effects (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that children with TAS are at risk of sleep and attention disorder symptoms. If attention disorders in a context of epilepsy are now widely assessed and identified, sleep disorders are still under-estimated. An accurate identification and management of sleep disorders could improve academic performances, quality of life, and seizure management in children with TAS.

Abstract
It is still debated whether lockdown conditions in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) health crisis seriously affected children’s sleep. For young children, some studies identified more insomnia, while others only transient disturbances, or even no effect. Based on the premise of mother–child synchrony, a well-known dynamic established in child development research, we hypothesized that principally, the children whose mothers perceived the lockdown as stressful and/or responded maladaptively, suffered sleep disturbances. The main objective of this study was to identify the family profiles, variables, and lockdown responses most linked to insomnia in young children. The sample consisted of 165 mothers, French vs. Swiss origin (accounting for different lockdown severities), of children 6 months to 5 years old. Validated sleep, stress, and behavior scales were used. Multiple regression, age-matched clustering, and structural equation modeling analyses provided evidence that insomnia in young children is indeed strongly linked to the mother’s reaction to the pandemic and lockdown. Specifically, reactions such as COVID-19 fear/anxiety and obsessive COVID-19 information seeking coincide with heightened vigilance, cascading into reduced child social contact, outings, and increased screen viewing, ultimately culminating in child insomnia and behavioral problems. Mother education level and child day care quality (e.g., home-schooling) were also identified as strong insomnia predictors.
