Abstract
Background Sleep deprivation can significantly affect sports performance and the perception of fatigue. However, the impact of sleep deprivation on sports performance remains a subject of ongoing debate across different populations. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on sports performance and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) in different groups, as well as how different types of sleep deprivation affect these aspects. Methods This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO CRD42023492792). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and randomized crossover studies published in any language or up to any date were eligible based on the P.I.C.O.S. criteria. The systematic search included databases such as PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, and EBSCO, covering studies up to September 2024. The Cochrane RoB 2 tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Meta-analysis was conducted using either a fixed-effect model or a random-effects model. This study conducted subgroup analyses based on different populations, types of sleep deprivation, and testing times. Results This review includes 45 studies, comprising 16 on aerobic endurance (AE) performance, 8 on anaerobic endurance (AnE) performance, 23 on explosive power (EP), 10 on maximum force (MF), 4 on speed, 4 on skill control, and 12 on rating of perceived exertion (RPE). The results indicate that sleep deprivation significantly impaired AE in athletes [SMD = -0.66; 95% CI (-1.28, -0.04); P = 0.04], as well as EP [SMD = -0.63; 95% CI (-0.94, -0.33); P < 0.00001], MF [SMD = -0.35; 95% CI (-0.56, -0.14); P = 0.001], speed [SMD = -0.52, 95% CI (-0.83, -0.22); P = 0.0008], skill control [SMD = -0.87; 95% CI (-1.7, -0.04); P = 0.04], and RPE [SMD = 0.39; 95% CI (0.11, 0.66); P = 0.006]. Additionally, AE was also reduced in healthy non-athletes [SMD = -1.02; 95% CI (-1.84, -0.21); P = 0.01]. During the sleep deprivation process, early sleep deprivation (PSDE) significantly reduced EP [SMD = -1.04; 95% CI (-1.58, -0.5); P = 0.0002], MF [SMD = -0.57; 95% CI (-0.94, -0.19); P = 0.003], speed [SMD = -0.78; 95% CI (-1.35, -0.2); P = 0.008], and RPE [SMD = 0.6; 95% CI (0.17, 1.02); P = 0.006]. Late sleep deprivation (PSDB) impacted speed [SMD = -0.57; 95% CI (-1.15, 0.01); P = 0.05], skill control [SMD = -2.12; 95% CI (-3.01, -1.24); P < 0.00001], and RPE [SMD = 0.47; 95% CI (0.02, 0.92); P = 0.04]. Overall, total sleep deprivation primarily affected AE [SMD = -0.56; 95% CI (-1.08, -0.05); P = 0.03]. In terms of testing phases, p.m. tests had a significant impact on AE [SMD = -1.4; 95% CI (-2.47, -0.34); P = 0.01], EP [SMD = -0.68; 95% CI (-1.06, -0.31); P = 0.0004], MF [SMD = -0.3; 95% CI (-0.51, -0.09); P = 0.005], skill control [SMD = -2.12; 95% CI (-3.01, -1.24); P < 0.00001], and RPE [SMD = 0.72; 95% CI (0.20, 1.24); P = 0.007]. In contrast, a.m. tests primarily affected speed [SMD = -0.81; 95% CI (-1.52, -0.1); P = 0.03] and RPE [SMD = 0.44; 95% CI (0.01, 0.86); P = 0.04]. Conclusion Sleep deprivation significantly impairs athletes' performance across various domains, including AE, MF, speed, and skill control, while also exacerbating RPE. In contrast, although sleep deprivation also negatively affects the AE of healthy non-athletes. Furthermore, PSDE appears to have a more pronounced effect on sports performance overall. Additionally, performance assessments conducted in the p.m. have been shown to further impact sports performance. These findings are crucial for understanding how sleep deprivation impacts both athletes and non-athletes, particularly in the context of training and competitive settings.

Abstract
Background Sleep problems are prevalent among the older adult population, with a significant impact on their health and overall well-being. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have yielded controversial results regarding the efficacy of exercise interventions in the improvement of sleep among older adult people. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess the influence of exercise interventions on sleep quality within this demographic. Methods A search was conducted across four databases, namely Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and SportDiscus, in order to identify randomized controlled trials investigating exercise interventions and sleep in the older adult. The quality of the studies included was evaluated by two researchers according to the PEDro scale. Meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed utilizing RevMan 5.4 and Stata 17 software. Result A total of fifty studies encompassing 3,937 participants were included in the analysis. Regarding patient-reported sleep parameters, exercise interventions exhibited enhancements in sleep quality (WMD = -2.18, 95%CI: -2.83 to -1.53, p < 0.01) and reductions in insomnia severity (SMD = -0.52, 95%CI: -0.79 to -0.25, p < 0.01), albeit without significant improvements in daytime sleepiness (SMD = -0.66, 95%CI: -1.41 to 0.09, p = 0.09). In terms of clinician-reported sleep parameters, exercise interventions resulted in increased total sleep time (WMD = 8.98, 95%CI: 1.19 to 16.78, p < 0.05) and sleep efficiency (WMD = 3.66, 95%CI: 2.46 to 4.85, p < 0.01), and reduced wake time after sleep onset (WMD = -11.85, 95%CI: -15.58 to -8.11, p < 0.01), but did not decrease sleep onset latency (WMD = -3.05, 95%CI: -6.23 to 0.13, p = 0.06) or the number of awakenings during sleep (WMD = -0.73, 95%CI: -1.98 to 0.52, p = 0.25). Conclusion Exercise interventions have demonstrated positive effects on enhancing sleep quality among the older adult population. This study lends support to the utilization of exercise interventions as a safe, feasible, and effective non-pharmacological treatment approach for enhancing sleep among older individuals. Abstract
Regular exercise is widely recognized for its numerous physical and mental benefits, but its effects on male reproductive health are less understood. This review aims to summarize the current evidence on the impact of exercise on male reproduction, including reproductive hormone regulation, spermatogenesis sperm quality, and fertility. Moderate exercise improves sperm quality, increasing count, motility, and morphology, while excessive and severe exercise may have detrimental effects. Exercise positively influences fertility by reducing oxidative stress and enhancing sperm DNA integrity. Regular physical activity regulates reproductive hormones, including testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. Exercise-induced weight management and improved insulin sensitivity also contribute to better reproductive health. In conclusion, exercise has a profound impact on male reproductive health, with moderate physical activity promoting improved hormonal balance, sperm quality, and fertility. However, severe/excessive exercise exerts negative effects. These findings imply that a balanced exercise routine, usually mild to moderate, combined with a healthy lifestyle is essential for optimal male reproductive health. However, once exercise is severe and prolonged, it could impair male reproductive health. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the exercise-reproduction relationship fully.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the effects of 24 weeks of three-duration Tai-Chi (TC) practice on depression and sleep quality in older women. METHODS A total of 124 older women were randomly divided into four groups: short-time group (SG, n = 31, mean age: 65.3), medium-time group (MG, n = 30, mean age: 65.7), long-time group (LG, n = 32, mean age: 64.9) and control group (CG, n = 31, mean age: 66.2). The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were measured. RESULTS 1) Within-group comparisons: Compared with the baseline, the 12th and 24th weeks showed reductions in TNF-α and IL-6 levels and increase in 5-HT level in the SG, MG and LG (p < 0.05). The LG at the 24th week had reduced BDI and PSQI scores (p < 0.05). Compared with the 12th week, the 24th week showed reductions in TNF-α and IL-6 levels (p < 0.01) and increase in 5-HT level (p < 0.05) in the SG, MG, and LG. 2) Between-group comparisons: The SG, MG, and LG had lower TNF-α and IL-6 levels and higher 5-HT level than the CG at 12th and 24th weeks (p < 0.05). At the 24th week, the LG had lower BDI and PSQI scores than the CG and lower TNF-α level than the SG and MG (p < 0.05). The MG had lower TNF-α levels than the SG in the 24th week (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION These results indicate that older individuals may undertake at least 12 weeks of TC exercise with a duration of 60 min per session to significantly improve depressive mood and sleep quality.

Abstract
Depression is a serious public health problem, and adolescence is an 'age of risk' for the onset of Major Depressive Disorder. Recently, we and others have proposed neuroimmune network models that highlight bidirectional communication between the brain and the immune system in both mental and physical health, including depression. These models draw on research indicating that the cellular actors (particularly monocytes) and signaling molecules (particularly cytokines) that orchestrate inflammation in the periphery can directly modulate the structure and function of the brain. In the brain, inflammatory activity heightens sensitivity to threats in the cortico-amygdala circuit, lowers sensitivity to rewards in the cortico-striatal circuit, and alters executive control and emotion regulation in the prefrontal cortex. When dysregulated, and particularly under conditions of chronic stress, inflammation can generate feelings of dysphoria, distress, and anhedonia. This is proposed to initiate unhealthy, self-medicating behaviors (e.g. substance use, poor diet) to manage the dysphoria, which further heighten inflammation. Over time, dysregulation in these brain circuits and the inflammatory response may compound each other to form a positive feedback loop, whereby dysregulation in one organ system exacerbates the other. We and others suggest that this neuroimmune dysregulation is a dynamic joint vulnerability for depression, particularly during adolescence. We have three goals for the present paper. First, we extend neuroimmune network models of mental and physical health to generate a developmental framework of risk for the onset of depression during adolescence. Second, we examine how a neuroimmune network perspective can help explain the high rates of comorbidity between depression and other psychiatric disorders across development, and multimorbidity between depression and stress-related medical illnesses. Finally, we consider how identifying neuroimmune pathways to depression can facilitate a 'next generation' of behavioral and biological interventions that target neuroimmune signaling to treat, and ideally prevent, depression in youth and adolescents.

Abstract
Objective To assess the relationship between physical activity (PA) and sleep quality (SQ) in Mohammed Bin Rashid University (MBRU) students in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Taking into account this being one of the first studies exploring this aspect among healthcare students in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional study that involved disseminating online surveys via email to students of all 5 colleges in MBRU between March-June 2023. The survey encompassed queries on demographics, the Saltin-Grimby Physical Activity Level Scale (SGPALS), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results The survey was completed by 105 students. Most students were from the medical college (98/105; 93.3%) and were females (84/105; 80.0%). Females engaged the most in low PA (44.0%) while males engaged the most in high PA (42.9%) according to the IPAQ-SF. There was a significant association between SGPALS and gender (p = 0.007, X2 = 12.0). The global PSQI score showed that 70.5% of the students had bad-quality sleep. Sleep efficiency and leisurely PA are significantly negatively correlated (p = 0.026, ρ = -0.217) while sitting minutes and sleep duration are significantly positively correlated (p = 0.030, r = 0.212). Conclusion Significant negative correlations between sleep efficiency and leisurely PA demonstrate that while exercise has been implicated in the improvement of SQ, excessive exercise can behave as an additional stressor and induce negative changes in the SQ of healthcare students. Meanwhile, significant positive correlations between sleep duration and sitting indicate that adequate rest should not be undervalued in its effects on sleep. Furthermore, the findings of this study highlight public health implications that warrant attention by educators and policymakers in academic health systems.

Abstract
Sleep disorders, a common concern in modern society, seriously affect people's physical and mental health. Reported findings suggest that both acute exercise intervention and long-term regular exercise intervention can improve the disrupted sleep structure and normalize the duration and proportion of the different phases of sleep. Moreover, exercise intervention has a positive effect on the endocrine functions, the metabolic functions, the immune response, the autonomic nervous system, and cardiac functions during sleep. It is a non-medicative therapeutic strategy for improving sleep disorders. The specific type of exercise intervention (aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, or meditative movement) adopted is one of the moderating variables of exercise intervention programs. Different types of exercise improve sleep disorders by way of different mechanisms. Exercise volume and intensity are another moderating variable of exercise intervention programs. The optimal amount and intensity of exercise for different individuals to improve sleep disorders may vary. Exercise interventions implemented at the different times throughout a day can also have varying degrees of impact on sleep disorders and there is no consensus on the optimal exercise time for improving sleep quality at present. Herein, we summarized the mechanisms by which exercise intervention improves sleep disorders from four perspectives, including epigenetics, hyperarousal, human circadian rhythm, and body temperature regulation. In addition, we discussed the current gaps and prospects of research in this field, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the development of exercise prescriptions for sleep disorders.

Abstract
Evidence indicating that exercise benefits mental health symptoms across a range of mental health diagnoses spans decades of scientific literature; however, fewer studies have examined the impact of exercise on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Exercise is an accessible, cost-effective, and scalable treatment option that has the potential to improve both physiological and psychological symptoms among individuals with PTSD. The purpose of this chapter is to review empirical literature on the role of exercise in the treatment of PTSD. Researchers have demonstrated that exercise improves PTSD symptoms as both a stand-alone treatment and as an adjunct to cognitive behavioral and trauma-focused therapies. Additional research is needed to clarify mechanisms that account for the impacts of exercise on PTSD and to identify which components of exercise (e.g., type of exercise, dose, intensity, frequency) are the most beneficial.

Abstract
This narrative review explores the impact of sleep and nutrition on injury risk in adolescent athletes. Sleep is viewed as essential to the recuperation process and is distinguished as an active participant in recovery through its involvement in growth, repair, regeneration, and immunity. Furthermore, the literature has shown that the sleep of athletes impacts elements of athletic performance including both physical and cognitive performance, recovery, injury risk, and mental well-being. For sleep to have a restorative effect on the body, it must meet an individual's sleep needs whilst also lasting for an adequate duration and being of adequate quality, which is age-dependent. The literature has suggested that athletes have increased sleep needs compared to those of the general population and thus the standard recommendations may not be sufficient for athletic populations. Therefore, a more individualised approach accounting for overall sleep health may be more appropriate for addressing sleep needs in individuals including athletes. The literature has demonstrated that adolescent athletes achieve, on average, ~6.3 h of sleep, demonstrating a discrepancy between sleep recommendations (8-10 h) and actual sleep achieved. Sleep-wake cycles undergo development during adolescence whereby adaptation occurs in sleep regulation during this phase. These adaptations increase sleep pressure tolerance and are driven by the maturation of physiological, psychological, and cognitive functioning along with delays in circadian rhythmicity, thus creating an environment for inadequate sleep during adolescence. As such, the adolescent period is a phase of rapid growth and maturation that presents multiple challenges to both sleep and nutrition; consequently, this places a significant burden on an adolescent athletes' ability to recover, thus increasing the likelihood of injury. Therefore, this article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the available literature on the importance of sleep and nutrition interactions in injury risk in adolescent athletes. Furthermore, it provides foundations for informing further investigations exploring the relation of sleep and nutrition interactions to recovery during adolescence.

Abstract
STUDY AIMS The study assessed the presence of sleep abnormalities in children who had recently been diagnosed with celiac disease (CD) and not started a gluten free diet (GFD). The children's polysomnographic profiles were also characterized and further compared with healthy children of the same age. METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study involved 46 pediatric subjects (aged 1-19 years) who had recently been diagnosed with CD and not started a GFD. The control group consisted of 32 healthy children (aged 2-17 years). All children underwent anthropometric measurement, laboratory testing and standard overnight observation with in-laboratory video-PSG. The study and control group were divided into subgroups according to the subjects' median ages (8.1 years): celiac children aged less than 8.1 years (n = 23) and more than 8.1 years (n = 23), healthy children less aged than 8.1 years (n = 16) and more than 8.1 years (n = 16). RESULTS No significant differences in the basic demographic and anthropometric parameters between the celiac and control group were observed. Significantly prolonged sleep latency (SOL) was evident in the celiac subjects (21.89 ± 20.77 min. vs. 10.99 ± 7.94 min, p = 0.02), with a probability of prolonged SOL of 4.23-fold greater (OR = 4.23; 95 % CI 1.1-16.22) than the healthy controls, especially in the subgroup of older celiac patients. No significant differences in the sleep period time (SPT), total sleep time (TST), wake during sleep (WASO), sleep efficiency (SE) and sleep stage distribution and cyclization were found. The respiratory rates during sleep indicated a significantly greater incidence of the central apnea-hypopnea index (CAHI) (0.54 ± 0.78 vs. 0.18 ± 0.24, p = 0.03) with a 3.16-fold greater probability of pathological CAHI (OR = 3.16; 95 % CI 1.02-9.77) than the control group. An increased incidence of CSA in the subgroup of younger celiac patients compared to younger healthy controls was especially evident. CONCLUSIONS The findings of our study suggest a difference in sleep architecture and an increased incidence of CSA in children with untreated CD, but additional research is required to verify the results.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The quality of sleep has an effect on the health of clinicians and the quality of patient care. Maintaining cognitive function/mood, facilitation of glucose metabolism, and strengthening of the immune system are among the roles that adequate sleep may contribute. Poor sleep quality is multifactorial, and studies had shown inconsistencies in the factors that contribute to the development of this poor sleep quality. The prevalence of poor sleep quality among clinicians working in the critical care unit and operation theater in the study setting was not investigated yet. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was conducted for the purpose of assessing the quality of sleep and associated factors among clinicians working in the critical care unit and operation theater. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from 15 May to 15 June 2022. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 421 clinicians selected by simple random sampling techniques. Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburg sleep quality index. The data were entered into Epi-data and exported to SPSS. Frequency and percentage were used for the descriptive analysis. Binary and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify factors associated with poor quality of sleep. The strength of the association was measured with an OR within the 95% CI and P-value of <0.05. RESULT About half 220 (52.3%) of the study participants age between 25 and 30 year old and the majority 321 (76.2%) of them were males. The prevalence of poor sleeps quality was 81.5% (95% CI: 77.9-85.5). Working night shift (AOR: 3.37, 95% CI: 1.754-6.484), having depressive symptoms (AOR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.485-7.147) and having no regular exercises (AOR: 0.299, 95% CI: 0.166-0.537) were predisposing factors for poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION The prevalence of poor sleep quality among clinicians working in the ICU and operation room was high. Clinicians who had no regular exercise, who worked in night shift, and who had depressive symptoms were associated with poor quality of sleep. Clinicians should have an awareness on the symptoms of depression, implement sleep hygiene education programs and promoting regular exercise. The authors recommend healthcare policy makers for improving working schedules.

Abstract
Airway inflammation characterized as asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of inspiratory muscle training on inflammation markers and oxidative stress levels in childhood asthma. A total of 105 children (age range 8-17 years), including 70 asthmatics and 35 healthy children, participated in the study. The 70 asthma patients were randomly assigned to the inspiratory muscle training (IMT) group (n = 35) and control group (n = 35), and healthy children were assigned to the healthy group (n = 35). The IMT group was treated with the threshold IMT device for 7 days/6 weeks at 30% of maximum inspiratory pressure. Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated with a mouth pressure measuring device, and respiratory function was evaluated with a spirometer. In addition, CRP, periostin, TGF-β, and oxidative stress levels were analyzed. The evaluation was performed only once in the healthy group and twice (at the beginning and end of 6 weeks) in asthma patients. In the study, there were significant differences between asthma patients and the healthy group in terms of MIP and MEP values, respiratory function, oxidative stress level, periostin, and TGF-β. Post-treatment, differences were observed in the oxidative stress level, periostin, and TGF-β of the IMT group (p < .05). CONCLUSION After 6 weeks of training, IMT positively contributed to reducing the inflammation level and oxidative stress. This suggests that IMT should be used as an alternative therapy to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. (Trial Registration: The clinical trial protocol number is NCT05296707). WHAT IS KNOWN • It is known that adjunctive therapies given in addition to pharmacological treatment contribute to improving symptom control and quality of life in individuals with asthma. WHAT IS NEW • There are no studies about the effect of respiratory physiotherapy on biomarkers in asthmatic children. The sub-mechanism of improvement in individuals has not been elucidated. • In this context, inspiratory muscle training has a positive effect on inflammation and oxidative stress levels in children with asthma and IMT should be used as an alternative treatment for childhood asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insomnia symptoms in older adults with mild cognitive impairment represent a significant public health burden in terms of impaired quality of life, risks from untreated insomnia, and adverse effects from pharmaceutical insomnia treatment. To address current limitations in the most effective non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, we are conducting a randomized pilot study to test a brief (4- week), tablet-based, personalized, multicomponent behavioral sleep intervention (MBSI) for insomnia, compared to a sleep education control, in a sample of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. METHODS Participants will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to intervention or control group. Both groups will complete three virtual study data collection visits: baseline, 4-week post-intervention, and 12-week post-intervention follow-up. Key components of the 4-week intervention include sleep hygiene education, stimulating meaningful activity during the day and promoting relaxation therapy at night. We will determine preliminary immediate (4-week) and sustained efficacy (12-week) of MBSI compared to sleep education on sleep related outcomes and health related quality of life. Additionally, we will explore mechanisms by which the intervention affects sleep and health related quality of life using standardized questionnaires and inflammatory biomarkers. RESULTS (N/A). DISCUSSION The findings of the proposed project will inform future, larger scale clinical trials and may provide a novel and innovative way for older adults with mild cognitive impairment to achieve better sleep and health-related quality of life outcomes.

Abstract
Cancer continues to be a significant global health issue. Traditional genetic-based approaches to understanding and treating cancer have had limited success. Researchers are increasingly exploring the impact of the environment, specifically inflammation and metabolism, on cancer development. Examining the role of mitochondria in this context is crucial for understanding the connections between metabolic health, physical activity, and cancer. This study aimed to review the literature on this topic through a comprehensive narrative review of various databases including MedLine (PubMed), Cochrane (Wiley), Embase, PsychINFO, and CinAhl. The review highlighted the importance of mitochondrial function in overall health and in regulating key events in cancer development, such as apoptosis. The concept of "mitochondrial fitness" emphasizes the crucial role of mitochondria in cell metabolism, particularly their oxidative functions, and how proper function can prevent replication errors and regulate apoptosis. Engaging in high-energy-demanding movement, such as exercise, is a powerful intervention for improving mitochondrial function and increasing resistance to environmental stressors. These findings support the significance of considering the role of the environment, specifically inflammation and metabolism, in cancer development and treatment. Further research is required to fully understand the mechanisms by which physical activity improves mitochondrial function and potentially reduces the risk of cancer.

Abstract
Background and Objectives. Anxiety and depressive disorders are the most prevalent mental disorders, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are suffering from anxiety and depressive disorders, and a considerable fraction of COVID-19 survivors have a variety of persistent neuropsychiatric problems after the initial infection. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a different perspective on mental disorders from Western biomedicine. Effective management of mental disorders has become an increasing concern in recent decades due to the high social and economic costs involved. This study attempts to express and ontologize the relationships between different mental disorders and physical organs from the perspective of TCM, so as to bridge the gap between the unique terminology used in TCM and a medical professional. Materials and Methods. Natural language processing (NLP) is introduced to quantify the importance of different mental disorder descriptions relative to the five depots and two palaces, stomach and gallbladder, through the classical medical text Huangdi Neijing and construct a mental disorder ontology based on the TCM classic text. Results. The results demonstrate that our proposed framework integrates NLP and data visualization, enabling clinicians to gain insights into mental health, in addition to biomedicine. According to the results of the relationship analysis of mental disorders, depots, palaces, and symptoms, the organ/depot most related to mental disorders is the heart, and the two most important emotion factors associated with mental disorders are anger and worry & think. The mental disorders described in TCM are related to more than one organ (depot/palace). Conclusion. This study complements recent research delving into co-relations or interactions between mental status and other organs and systems.

Abstract
Inconsistent findings have been discovered in studies examining the link between dietary selenium (Se) and sleep. Data were obtained from 17,176 people aged 20 and over who participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) from 2004 to 2011. Face-to-face interviews were used to measure sleep duration in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011. To track dietary Se consumption, a 3-day, 24-h recall was undertaken. In the analysis, multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression was employed. The odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of optimal sleep duration (7-9 h/day) in the regression of Model 4 were 1.00, 1.01 (0.89-1.15) and 1.19 (1.02-1.38) for the three tertiles of selenium consumption, respectively. Only overweight patients displayed a substantial positive connection between Se intake and the optimal sleep duration in the subgroup analysis. In summary, Se intake was significantly associated with optimal sleep duration.

Abstract
Sleep and exercise have an important role in the development of several inflammation-related diseases, including sarcopenia. Objective: To investigate the effects of 12 weeks of resistance exercise training on sleep and inflammatory status in sarcopenic patients. Methods: A randomized controlled trial comparing resistance exercise training (RET) with a control (CTL) was conducted. Outcomes were obtained by physical tests, polysomnography, questionnaires, isokinetic/isometric dynamometry tests, and biochemical analysis. Results: Time to sleep onset (sleep latency) was reduced in the RET group compared to the CTL group (16.09 ± 15.21 vs. 29.98 ± 16.09 min; p = 0.04) after the intervention. The percentage of slow-wave sleep (N3 sleep) was increased in the RET group (0.70%, CI: 7.27−16.16 vs. −4.90%, CI: 7.06−16.70; p = 0.04) in an intention to treat analysis. Apnea/hour was reduced in the RET group (16.82 ± 14.11 vs. 7.37 ± 7.55; p = 0.001) and subjective sleep quality was improved compared to the CTL (−1.50; CI: 2.76−6.14 vs. 0.00; CI: 1.67−3.84 p = 0.02) in an intention-to-treat analysis. Levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10) (2.13 ± 0.80 vs. 2.51 ± 0.99; p < 0.03) and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) (0.99 ± 0.10 vs. 0.99 ± 0.10 ng/mL; p < 0.04; delta variation) were increased in the RET group. Conclusions: RET improves sleep parameters linked to muscle performance, possibly due to an increase in anti-inflammatory markers in older sarcopenic patients.

Abstract
AbstractAlthough recent studies have examined the bidirectional associations between physical activity and sleep parameters, few have focused on older adults utilizing objective assessments, such as polysomnography. This micro-longitudinal observational study included 92 Japanese older adults (aged 65–86 years) who underwent objective evaluations of sleep quality using polysomnography and completed subjective sleep-related questionnaires. Activity levels were assessed using an accelerometer. Polysomnography, subjective sleep-related questionnaires, and accelerometer were administered for 7 consecutive days. Multilevel models (participant-, day-level) were used to examine the temporal associations of objective and subjective sleep parameters with sedentary behavior and physical activity. In the day-level analysis, higher levels of sedentary behavior during daytime were associated with longer rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, shorter REM latency, lower levels of non-REM sleep (stage N3), and reduced delta power during daytime. Higher levels of low-intensity physical activity during daytime were associated with lower levels of REM sleep, longer REM latency, and increased stage N3 sleep in the day-level analysis. Higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were associated with increased REM latency. Longer subjective sleep time was associated with increased next-day moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Thus, low-intensity physical activity may provide objective benefits related to deep sleep parameters in older adults.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The prevalence of obesity among children is increasing and is highlighting many problems. Lack of sleep is common among children and adolescents. Although several studies have investigated sleep duration and overweight and obesity from a sex perspective, data regarding age and sex effects remain limited and inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the risk(s) for overweight or obesity according to sleep duration among children and adolescents; to evaluate the effect of short sleep duration on the incidence of overweight/obesity among children and adolescents; and to evaluate sex differences in the risk of overweight or obesity with shorter sleep durations. Materials and Methods: The PubMed database was searched for relevant studies published up to June 30, 2021. Odds ratios for obesity/overweight were estimated for short compared with long sleep duration. Subgroup analysis based on sleep duration, sex, and study location was also performed. Results: The estimated odds ratio for combined obesity and overweight was 1.171 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.092−1.256) according to short sleep duration. Obesity/overweight with short sleep duration was significantly prevalent in the <6 and 6−10 years’ subgroups (odds ratio 1.226 (95% CI 1.083−1.387) and 1.341 (95% CI 1.175−1.530), respectively). Among boys, short sleep duration was significantly correlated with a high occurrence of obesity/overweight (odds ratio 1.294 (95% CI 1.153−1.452)); no such correlation was found among girls. Conclusions: Short sleep duration may increase risk of obesity among children and adolescents, especially those <6 and 6−10 years of age. In the subgroup analysis, the incidence of obesity/overweight for short sleep time revealed significant results among Asians and boys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence regarding the association between sleep disturbance and functional dyspepsia (FD) remains limited in the young population. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep disturbance and FD including subgroups among Japanese young people. METHODS Study subjects were 8923 university students. FD was defined according to the Rome III criteria. Subjects with FD were further categorized as having postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) or epigastric pain syndrome (EPS). Subjects completed a self-reported questionnaire assessing self-reported sleep duration, sleep disturbance, difficulty falling asleep, deep sleep disorder, nocturnal awakening, early awakening, and daytime sleepiness. RESULTS The prevalence of FD was 1.9%. After adjustment, all types of sleep disturbances were independently positively associated with FD (total sleep disturbance: OR 4.11 [95% CI: 2.89-5.78], difficulty falling asleep: OR 3.97 [95% CI: 2.53-6.01], deep sleep disorder: OR 4.85 [95% CI: 3.06-7.40], nocturnal awakening: OR 4.35 [95% CI: 1.90-8.67], early awakening: OR 4.50 [95% CI: 1.97-8.97], and daytime sleepiness: OR 2.83 [95% CI: 1.25-5.56]). While nocturnal awakening and daytime sleepiness were not associated with EPS, the other types of sleep disturbance were independently positively associated with EPS and PDS. No association between self-reported sleep duration and FD was found. CONCLUSIONS Sleep disturbance may be independently positively associated with the prevalence of FD among Japanese young people. Nocturnal awakening and daytime sleepiness were not associated with EPS; the other types of sleep disturbance were independently positively associated with EPS and PDS.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a highly prevalent arrhythmia that causes high morbidity and mortality. However, the underlying mechanism of AF has not been fully elucidated. Recent research has suggested that, during AF, the immune system changes considerably and interacts with the environment and cells involved in the initiation and maintenance of AF. This may provide a new direction for research and therapeutic strategies for AF. In this review, we elaborate the concept of immune remodeling based on available data in AF. Then, we highlight the complex relationships between immune remodeling and atrial electrical, structural and neural remodeling while also pointing out some research gaps in these field. Finally, we discuss several potential immunomodulatory treatments for AF. Although the heterogeneity of existing evidence makes it ambiguous to extrapolate immunomodulatory treatments for AF into the clinical practice, immune remodeling is still an evolving concept in AF pathophysiology and further studies within this field are likely to provide effective therapies for AF.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The pathophysiology of functional dysphagia as defined by the updated Rome IV criteria is complex and remains largely unknown. We aimed to investigate its clinical characteristics and its association with psychosocial comorbidities. METHODS Consecutive patients referred to our motility laboratory for evaluation of esophageal dysphagia were identified. All patients were assessed with upper endoscopy, high-resolution impedance manometry, and validated symptom questionnaires. Data from those who were diagnosed with functional dysphagia (n = 96) based on the Rome IV criteria were analyzed. Age- and sex-adjusted healthy volunteers were also enrolled for comparison. Psychiatric comorbidity and poor sleep quality were defined as total score of 5-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale ≥6 and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ≥6, respectively. RESULTS The age peak of patients with functional dysphagia was at 40-60 years (47.9%) with females predominant (67%). Forty-four patients (45.8%) had psychiatric comorbidities, whereas 80 (83.3%) experienced poor sleep quality. Female patients were more likely to have trouble falling asleep, shorter sleep duration, and severe bloating. Compared with the healthy volunteers, patients with functional dysphagia had higher 5-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (5.34 ± 3.91 vs 1.84 ± 2.61, 9.64 ± 4.13 vs 4.77 ± 3.60, both P < 0.001) but similar results on high-resolution impedance manometry. Those with ineffective esophageal motility (16.7%) had less sleep efficiency than those with normal motility. DISCUSSION Patients with functional dysphagia were mainly middle-aged women and had a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities and sleep disturbances, especially in female patients. Patients with functional dysphagia displayed similar esophageal motility as the healthy volunteers did.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Insomnia disorders as well as cardiometabolic disorders are highly prevalent in the psychiatric population compared to the general population. We aimed to investigate their association and evolution over time in a Swiss psychiatric cohort. METHODS Data for 2861 patients (8954 observations) were obtained from two prospective cohorts (PsyMetab and PsyClin) with metabolic parameters monitored routinely during psychotropic treatment. Insomnia disorders were based on the presence of ICD-10 "F51.0" diagnosis (non-organic insomnia), the prescription of sedatives before bedtime or the discharge letter. Metabolic syndrome was defined using the International Diabetes Federation definition, while the 10-year risk of cardiovascular event or death was assessed using the Framingham Risk Score and the Systematic Coronary Risk Estimation, respectively. RESULTS Insomnia disorders were observed in 30% of the cohort, who were older, predominantly female, used more psychotropic drugs carrying risk of high weight gain (olanzapine, clozapine, valproate) and were more prone to suffer from schizoaffective or bipolar disorders. Multivariate analyses showed that patients with high body mass index (OR = 2.02, 95%CI [1.51-2.72] for each ten-kg/m2 increase), central obesity (OR = 2.20, [1.63-2.96]), hypertension (OR = 1.86, [1.23-2.81]), hyperglycemia (OR = 3.70, [2.16-6.33]), high density lipoprotein hypocholesterolemia in women (OR = 1.51, [1.17-1.95]), metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.84, [1.16-2.92]) and higher 10-year risk of death from cardiovascular diseases (OR = 1.34, [1.17-1.53]) were more likely to have insomnia disorders. Time and insomnia disorders were associated with a deterioration of cardiometabolic parameters. CONCLUSIONS Insomnia disorders are significantly associated with metabolic worsening and risk of death from cardiovascular diseases in psychiatric patients.

Abstract
This study aims to assess whether participation as a supportive volunteer in equestrian therapy (ET) sessions influences participants' physiological health-related parameters, including physical activity and sleep. Physical activity, measured in steps, and hours of sleep were measured in 10 subjects who participated regularly as volunteers in ET sessions using a triaxial accelerometer which continuously recorded their activity for 30 days. On the one hand, the subjects showed higher physical activity levels on days when they volunteered in ET sessions versus the days they did not. A significant difference and large effect magnitude were found. On the other hand, on the days they attended ET, they slept an average of 30 minutes more, with significant differences and a moderate effect. Thus, participation as a volunteer in ET sessions seems to have a positive influence on physical activity and sleep time, so it should be recommended as an activity to promote healthy habits.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the association between nighttime sleep, daytime napping, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in an elderly Chinese population. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to examine the association between nighttime sleep, daytime napping, and MetS (defined according to the Chinese Diabetes Society criteria). Sleep duration was assessed by a self-reported questionnaire. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the associations adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Among 4785 elderly Chinese aged over 65 years old, there was no association between short-time sleep duration (< 7 h/day) and MetS. However, long-time sleep duration (> 8 h/day) decreased the odds of MetS by 53% (aOR= 0.47; 95% CI 0.23-0.96) compared to normal sleep duration (7-8 h/day). Compared to no daytime napping, short-time napping (≤ 30 min/day) was associated with increased odds of MetS (aOR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.02-2.36) and long-time napping (> 30 min/day) was associated with even higher odds of MetS (aOR = 1.77, 95%CI 1.24-2.53). Individuals who were over 75 years old, with elementary school education, and good health status had lower odds of MetS, while women, individuals living in rural areas, and those who reported poor health status had higher odds of MetS. CONCLUSION Long-time sleep duration decreased and daytime napping increased the risk of MetS among the elderly Chinese population. We speculate that increasing nighttime sleep duration and decreasing daytime napping may help reduce the risk of MetS.

Abstract
Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) encompass a range of complex conditions with similar clinical characteristics and no overt pathology. Recent recognition of sub-clinical pathologies in FGIDs, in conjunction with physiological and biochemical abnormalities including increased intestinal permeability, microbial profile alterations, differences in metabolites and extra-intestinal manifestations of disease, call into question the designation of these conditions as 'functional'. This is despite significant heterogeneity in both symptom profile and specifics of reported physiological abnormalities hampering efforts to determine defined mechanisms that drive onset and chronicity of symptoms. Instead, the literature demonstrates these conditions are disorders of homeostatic imbalance, with disruptions in both host and microbial function and metabolism. This imbalance is also associated with extraintestinal abnormalities including psychological comorbidities and fatigue that may be a consequence of gastrointestinal disruption. Given the exploitation of such abnormalities will be crucial for improved therapeutic selection, an enhanced understanding of the relationship between alterations in function of the gastrointestinal tract and the response of the immune system is of interest in identifying mechanisms that drive FGID onset and chronicity. Considerations for future research should include the role of sex hormones in regulating physiological functions and treatment responses in patients, as well as the importance of high-level phenotyping of clinical, immune, microbial and physiological parameters in study cohorts. There is opportunity to examine the functional contribution of the microbiota and associated metabolites as a source of mechanistic insight and targets for therapeutic modulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological distress, strongly associated with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDS), likely plays a central role in the pathophysiology. The role of sleep disturbances in FGIDs is unclear, and an association with psychological factors is uncertain. AIM To determine whether sleep disturbances are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) and if a potential association is explained by psychological distress. METHODS Adult sample randomly selected from a region in New South Wales, Australia in 2015 who returned a follow-up mail survey in 2018 (response rate, 60.5%) that contained questions on IBS, FD, sleep (MOS-Sleep Scale) and psychological distress (Kessler 6 scale). RESULTS Among this population, 10.4% (95% CI 8.8-12.2) and 17.9% (95% CI 15.9-20.1) met Rome III criteria for IBS and FD, respectively. The prevalence of any sleep disturbance at least most of the time was common, with a significantly higher prevalence in FGID (IBS and/or FD) compared with the remaining population (41.8% vs 32.2%, P = 0.003). The total sleep problem index was significantly higher for IBS (OR = 1.71 [95% CI 1.29-2.27], P < 0.0001) (IBS-diarrhoea predominant and IBS-mixed but not IBS-constipation) and FD (OR = 1.80 [1.43-2.26], P < 0.0001) (both epigastric pain syndrome and postprandial distress syndrome) even after adjusting for age, sex and psychological distress. CONCLUSION Both IBS and FD, and most of their major subtypes except IBS-C, are associated with a range of sleep disturbances. These sleep problems do not appear to be explained by psychological factors and may play an independent role in the pathophysiology.

Abstract
Exercise training is generally beneficial for cardiovascular health, improving stroke volume, cardiac output, and aerobic capacity. Despite these benefits, some evidence indicates that endurance training may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), particularly in highly trained individuals. Among multiple mechanisms, autonomic tone changes and atrial remodeling have been proposed as main contributors for exercise-induced AF. However, the contribution of local and systemic immunity is poorly understood in the development of atrial arrhythmogenic substrates. Here we aim to update the field of immunomodulation in the context of exercise and AF by compiling and reconciling the most recent evidence from preclinical and human studies and rationalize the applicability of "lone" AF terminology in athletes.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of a mind-body exercise, qigong Baduanjin, on sleep disturbances in women experiencing intimate partner violence and explore the mediating role of depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and inflammation in producing the effects. METHODS A subgroup of a parent randomized controlled trial was randomized for a 22-week Baduanjin intervention (n = 94) or wait-list control (n = 92). Questionnaires, including the General Sleep Disturbance Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory version II, were administered at baseline, posttraining (6 weeks), and postintervention (22 weeks), and blood samples were collected to assess tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6 levels at baseline and postintervention only. RESULTS Of the 186 participants, 170 completed the study. Results indicate that the total sleep disturbance scores for the intervention group were significantly lower than those for the wait-list control group at week 6 (difference = -7.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], -13.63 to -2.30; P = .006) and week 22 (difference = -7.17; 95% CI, -12.58 to -1.76; P = .01). Mediation analysis showed a statistically significant indirect effect of the intervention on sleep improvement through reducing depressive symptoms (β = 2.58, 95% CI, 0.69 to 5.09), while the mediating effects of perceived stress and inflammation were not significant. CONCLUSIONS Qigong Baduanjin can be recommended for women who experience intimate partner violence and report sleep disturbances. More research is needed to understand the clinical significance of the observed sleep improvements. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether the timing of exercise influenced the effects of home-based low-intensity stepping exercises on the sleep parameters of older adults. METHOD For 8 weeks, 60 healthy older adults participated in a randomized controlled trial, performing low-intensity aerobic exercise (70-80 bpm) for about 30 minutes every day at home, either in the morning (from waking until 12:00) or evening (18:00 to bedtime). RESULTS In the evening exercise group, both subjectively and objectively measured sleep latency significantly improved throughout the intervention. Further, postintervention subjective sleep satisfaction was significantly higher in the evening group (6.2 ± 1.3 points) than in the morning group (5.2 ± 1.4 points; P = .006). Additionally, sleep variables related to evening exercise had larger effect sizes (Cohen d) than those performed in the morning. CONCLUSION Engaging in low-intensity stepping exercises during the evening is potentially a useful nonpharmacological approach to improving sleep quality among older adults.

Abstract
Introduction The effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with resistance training (RT) in adults with obesity and sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs) is limited. Objective This study aimed to examine the effects of HIIT combined with RT on subjective sleep disorders in adults with obesity and SRBDs. Material and Methods This study was a pre- and post-test design. Seventeen adults with obesity and SRBDs were recruited into the study. They received 24 minutes of HIIT and 30 minutes of RT, 3 times/week for 6 weeks. The Epworth sleepiness scale (daytime sleepiness), Berlin questionnaire (snoring and daytime sleepiness category), estimated maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), muscle strength using 1-repetition maximum, anthropometric variables, and blood biomarkers were examined at baseline and after 6 weeks of training. Results The Epworth sleepiness scale, Berlin questionnaire (daytime sleepiness category), and the number of risks associated with sleep apnea using the Berlin questionnaire were significantly decreased after 6 weeks of training (all p<0.01). The estimated VO2max and muscle strength were significantly increased at Week 6 (all p<0.05). Body weight, body mass index, % body fat, and hip circumference were significantly decreased at Week 6 (all p<0.05). No significant changes were observed in blood biomarkers, except for fasting blood glucose (p<0.01). Conclusion Six weeks of HIIT combined with RT has beneficial effects on subjective sleep disorders, estimated VO2max, muscle strength, and most anthropometric variables in adults with obesity and SRBDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic primary insomnia is characterized by long-term difficulties in maintaining and initiating sleep, too early waking up, poor mood, fatigue, impaired concentration and poor quality of life. Exercise training is recommended to prevent and alleviate sleep disorders. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of aerobic exercise training on quality of sleep, psychological wellbeing and immune system among subjects with chronic primary insomnia. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty previously sedentary subjects with chronic primary insomnia subjects enrolled in this study, their age ranged from 35-56 years. All participants were randomly assigned to supervised aerobic exercise intervention group (group A, n=40) or control group (group B, n=40). Polysomnographic recordings for sleep quality assessment, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Profile of Mood States(POMS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), number of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ T cells count and CD4/CD8 ratio were measured before and at the end of the study after six months. RESULTS There was a significant increase in the total sleep duration, sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency in group(A) after six months of aerobic exercise training, while, wake time after sleep onset and rapid eye movement (REM) latency significantly reduced after six months of aerobic training compared with values obtained prior to aerobic exercise training. Also, the mean values of BDI, POMS, CD3 count, CD4 count and CD8 count decreased significantly and the mean value of RSES significantly increased in group (A) after the aerobic exercise training, while the results of the control group were not significant. Moreover, there were significant differences between both groups at the end of the study. CONCLUSION Exercise training can be considered as a non-pharmacological modalty for modifying sleep quality, psychological wellbeing and immune system among subjects with chronic primary insomnia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Examine subjective sleep quality and inflammation among healthy older adults participating in the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention (ARCLI). METHODS Data was taken from a sub-set of 232 participants aged between 60-70 years (M = 65.88 ± SD 4.08 years) who participated in the baseline assessment phase of the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention (ARCLI) study. Subjective sleep was assessed via the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ). Inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, hs-CRP) were derived from whole blood. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to examine associations between each of the four sleep outcome variables and inflammatory outcomes, examined as a group and following gender stratification. RESULTS Difficulties getting to sleep were independently associated with higher IL-2 [F(1,156) = 4.62, adjusted R2 = 0.02, p = 0.03] and IL-1β [F(1,141) = 8.52, adjusted R2 = 0.05, p = 0.004] (whole group). Difficulties getting to sleep were associated with greater IL-1β [males: F(1,58) = 7.36, adjusted R2 = 0.097 p = 0.009; females: F (1,81) = 4.25, R2 = 0.038, p = 0.04], and negatively associated with hs-CRP (women) [F (1,129) = 4.71, R2 = 0.028, p = 0.032]. DISCUSSION Subjective sleep-onset difficulties are associated with systemic inflammation.

Abstract
Exercise has promising effects on sleep disturbances and quality of life among cancer patients. Aerobic exercises (AE) and mind-body exercises (MBE) have different mechanisms for improving sleep, but whether they are effective remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to examine the effectiveness of AE and MBE on sleep outcomes, specifically among cancer patients with sleep disturbances. A systematic search of several databases, from inception to January 2018, was conducted. The pooled effect sizes suggested that both AE (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.33, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.11, 0.54) and MBE (SMD = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.30), improved sleep outcomes in cancer patients with poor sleep quality post-intervention. The effects remained significant after 3-6 months for AE, but not MBE. Due to the heterogeneity in AE, future studies should establish the optimal AE prescription. For MBE, future research should study essential components that make the intervention effect sustainable.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances affect approximately half of the older adult population and add additional risks of developing Alzheimer's disease. This study is to test the effects of a 12-week resistance training (RT) program on sleep in older adults residing in an assisted living facility in China. A total of 62 eligible participants were randomly assigned to RT (n = 31) or control group (n = 31). Participants in RT group participated in three 1-hour moderate intensity RT sessions per week for 12 weeks (at least 48 h between sessions). In the overall sample, sleep efficiency increased (P < 0.01), wake after sleep onset (P < 0.01) decreased in participants in RT group at post-intervention, compared to control group. Similar results were found in participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The findings support that RT improves sleep efficiency and decreases sleep fragmentation in older adults in general and in those with MCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleeping habits may greatly impact the prevalence of functional dyspepsia (FD). This study examined relationships between aspects of sleep impairment and FD. METHODS This prospective study included university student volunteers. Following enrolment, FD was diagnosed based on the Rome IV criteria, dividing participants into an FD group or controls. The FD group was further subdivided into long-term (disease course >6 months) and short-term (disease course 3-6 months) FD groups. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire for Gastrointestinal Disorders in Adults, and a visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS Out of 418 participants in total, sleep quality, latency, and duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, sleep medication use, daytime dysfunction, and PSQI scores were higher in the FD groups versus controls. Components of PSQI scores emerged as risk factors, and were higher in the long-term versus short-term dyspepsia group. Moreover, these components were positively correlated with frequency/severity of postprandial distress syndrome and early satiation. Total PSQI scores were positively correlated with VAS scores. CONCLUSION Several PSQI components are associated with FD occurrence, symptom frequency, and symptom severity.

Abstract
The fear and uncertainty caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, threats to survival are one of the main problems of everyday life; however, mental health care must also be considered a priority. During social isolation also called self-quarantine, the restricted mobility and social contact, concern about financial resources and availability of supplies, fear of infection, questions about the duration of self-quarantine, cause anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia and reduced the quality and quantity of sleep, that may present a greater risk to the health of the general population. Sleep disorders are increasingly becoming a major health issue in modern society, and are influenced by retinal stimulation by electronic devices, as well extended and/or night shift-work, which may aggravate the systemic and lung inflammation during viral infections. Sleep disorders can induce pro-inflammatory states and be harmful during the COVID-19 pandemic. The possible interactions between many drugs used to treat COVID-19, and those used to treat sleep disorders are unknown, mostly due to the lack of a standard protocol to treat these patients. Insufficient sleep or irregular sleep-wake cycles may impair health, immune system, induce pro-inflammation state, and may lead to increased vulnerability to viral infections, involving inflammatory and oxidative/antioxidant imbalance. In this sense, obstructive sleep apnea has been associated with recognized COVID-19 risk comorbidities and considered a risk factor for COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic, health care cannot stop, and telemedicine has presented itself as an alternative method of delivering services. When a face-to-face visit is mandatory, or in locations with minimal community transmission where sleep centers have resumed activities, it is important that the sleep center facilities are properly prepared to receive the patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, and follow all relevant safety rules. In this work we gathered a group of researchers, specialists in aspects related to chronobiology, sleep, sleep disorders, and the immune system. Thus, we conducted a narrative review in order to address the relationship between COVID-19 and sleep, as well as its immunological aspects and strategies that may be applied in order to mitigate the harmful effects on health that affects everyone during the pandemic.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep resulting in intermittent hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation. Research has recently increasingly focused on the impact of OSA on the brain's structure and function, in particular as this relates to neurodegenerative diseases. This article reviews the links between OSA and neurodegenerative disease, focusing on Parkinson's disease, including proposed pathogenic mechanisms and current knowledge on the effects of treatment.

Abstract
Sleep is crucial to improve athlete performance and their circadian rhythm, but sleep patterns may be disturbed because athletes participate in several competitions. In addition, intensive training programs can cause muscle pain and psychological stress in athletes, resulting in a lack of sleep. Sleep also plays a critical role in the recovery of muscle injury induced by exercise. The current study evaluated the effect of sleep deprivation on the recovery of muscle injury induced by high-intensity exercise in a mouse model. In this study, 28 mice were randomly assigned to four groups (N = 7): control (Control), exercise (EX), sleep deprivation (SD), and sleep deprivation with exercise (EX+SD). The mice from the EX and EX+SD groups were subjected to high-intensity swimming. The results showed that 72-h sleep deprivation increased food intake and reduced body weight. However, the manipulation of 8-week exercise and/or 72-h sleep deprivation did not have any effect in the elevated plus maze task and tail suspension test. Interestingly, the EX+SD group exhibited improved memory performance in the Morris water maze and impaired motor activity in the open field test. According to the TNF-α level and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and creatine phosphokinase (CK) activities, only the EX+SD group exhibited muscle impairment. Overall, high-intensity exercise may cause muscle injury, and adequate sleep can recover muscle damage. However, sleep deprivation reduces protein synthesis, which decreases the ability to restore muscle damage and aggravates the harmful effect of high-intensity exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate depression and other determinants (sleep-deprived behaviors such as hours spent sleeping, watching television, and on the computer) and their association with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among college freshmen. METHODS Self-administered questionnaires were collected from two colleges in northern Taiwan from July to September 2014. A total of 2643 students (38.7% male; ages ranged 18-23 years; mean age of 18.8 ± 1.2 years) completed an anonymous questionnaire on lifestyle behaviors (including personal habits, sleep duration and quality, and hours spent watching television and on the computer); perception of one's health, a validated depression scale (Brief Symptom Rating Scale, BSRS-5); insomnia symptoms (the Chinese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale, CAIS); and EDS rated with the Chinese Epworth sleepiness scale (CESS). The data were analyzed using the chi-squared test, t-test, multivariate logistic regression, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS The prevalence of EDS among college students was approximately 27.1% (717/2643). The risk of EDS was elevated with increasing severity of depression: odds ratio (OR) = 2.8/3.71/5.01 for female, and OR = 3.29/5.07/5.07 for mild/moderate/severe depression for male, respectively (p < 0.05; marginally higher in male severe depression, p = 0.08). If depression score increased by 1 point, CESS score increased by 0.35 point; if time spent on the computer during non-holidays increased by 1 h, CESS score increased by 0.1 point; and for those whose sleep duration increased by 1 h during non-holidays, CESS score decreased by 0.1 point. CONCLUSIONS EDS significantly predicted depression among college freshmen. Using a computer for a long time and less sleep duration during non-holidays contributed to EDS of college freshmen. Youths who experience EDS are recommended to seek assessment for depression symptoms and sleep-deprived behaviors, thus allowing physicians to offer appropriate screening and treatment.

Abstract
The previous two decades have seen an exponential increase in the number of published scientific investigations on the efficacy of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) training to improve function in a wide range of physical and psychological processes. The resulting body of work provides strong evidence that MBSR has salubrious effects. Yet, when compared directly to groups with training that matches MBSR in factors common to most legitimate interventions, such as learning new skills, expectation of benefit, social engagement and support, and attention from expert instructors, both groups tend to improve to a similar extent. This raises the question of whether there are benefits that are specific to training in mindfulness and if so, why are we not detecting them? Here, we discuss the factors that contribute to the general lack of differentiation between MBSR and active control groups, including the specificity of outcome measures and experimental design, random assignment, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and the time course and trajectory of change. In addition, we offer recommendations to address these factors in future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is a major problem for older adults which can be exacerbated by increased inflammation as aging is associated with increased circulating pro-inflammatory and lower anti-inflammatory cytokines. There is a need to develop alternative medicine techniques to help improve sleep quality in the elderly. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of aerobic exercise training on the sleep quality and inflammatory cytokines in elderly subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty previously sedentary elderly subjects participated in this study, their age ranged from 61- 67 years. All subjects were randomly assigned to supervised aerobic exercise intervention group (group A, n=25) or control group (group B, n=25). Polysomnographic recordings for sleep quality assessment, interleukin- 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor- alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were measured before and after 6 months at the end of the study. RESULTS There was a significant increase in total sleep duration, sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency in group(A) after 6 months of aerobic exercise training, while, wake time after sleep onset and rapid eye movement (REM) latency significantly reduced after 6 months of aerobic training compared with values obtained prior to aerobic exercise training. Also, the mean values of TNF- α and IL-6 decreased significantly and the mean value of IL-10 significantly increased in group (A) after the aerobic exercise training, however the results of the control group were not significant. Moreover, there were significant differences between both groups at the end of the study. CONCLUSION Exercise training can be considered as a non-pharmacological modality for modifying sleep quality and inflammation among elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The main objective of this review is to assess the effects of aerobic, resistance, and meditative movement exercise on sleep quality in patients with unipolar depression. A secondary goal is to ascertain the effects on sleep duration, sleepiness, daytime functioning, use of hypnotics, and adverse events. METHODS A systematic computerized search will be performed in the following online databases: PubMed, EMBASE (on Ovid), Cochrane Library, PsycINFO (on Ovid), SPORTDiscus (on EBSCOhost), CINHAL (on EBSCOhost), Clinicaltrials.gov , WHO International Clinical Trials Registry, OpenGrey, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Bibliographies of all included studies as well as any other relevant reviews identified via the search will be screened. Randomized trials using aerobic, resistance, or meditative movement exercise interventions which target sleep as a primary or secondary outcome will be included. The primary outcome will be differences in sleep quality at post-intervention. Secondary outcomes will be adverse events, differences in sleep duration, daytime sleepiness and functioning, and the use of hypnotics at post-intervention. Two authors will independently screen the identified records. Disagreement will be resolved by consensus or if no consensus can be reached by adjudication of a designated third reviewer. Data extraction will be done independently by two authors using a standardized and piloted data extraction sheet. Bias in individual studies will be assessed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool. The certainty of evidence across all outcomes will be evaluated using the CINeMA (Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis) framework. A frequentist network meta-analysis will be conducted. The systematic review and network meta-analysis will be presented according to the PRISMA for Network Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-NMA) guideline. DISCUSSION This systematic review and network meta-analysis will provide a synthesis of the currently available evidence concerning the effects of aerobic, resistance, and meditative movement exercises on sleep in patients with unipolar depression. Thereby, we hope to accelerate the consolidation of evidence and inform decision-makers on potential benefits and harms. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION The protocol has been registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; registration number: CRD42019115705).
