Abstract
A novel fluorescence probe for the detection of Al3+ was developed based on methionine protected gold nanoclusters (Met-AuNCs). A fluorescent Schiff base (an aldimine) is formed between the aldehyde group of salicylaldehyde (SA) and the amino groups of Met on the AuNCs, and developed for selective detection of Al3+ in aqueous solution. Al3+ can strongly bind with the Schiff base ligands, accompanied by the blue-shift and an obvious fluorescence emission enhancement at 455 nm. The limits of detection (LODs) of the probe are 2 pmol L-1 for Al3+. Moreover, the probe can successfully be used in fluorescence imaging of Al3+ in living cells (SHSY5Y cells), suggesting that the simple fluorescent probe has great potential use in biological imaging.

Abstract
The metal cations, Al3+ and Mg2+, could affect human health and cell biological processes. Their fast and selective detection using one probe remains a challenge. A novel fluorescence probe, N'-((1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene)isoquinoline-3-carbohydrazide (NHMI), was developed for selectively monitoring Al3+ and Mg2+. The probe NHMI showed a distinctive "turn-on" fluorescence signal towards Al3+ and Mg2+ (cyan for Al3+ with 2556-folds enhancement and yellow for Mg2+ with 88-folds enhancement), which is quite distinct from other metal cations and allows for naked-eye detection. This interesting response was attributed to the influence of PET, ESIPT process and CHEF effect, when Al3+ or Mg2+ chelated with NHMI. Furthermore, the fluorescence titration experiments manifested that the detection limit of probe NHMI for Al3+/Mg2+ was as low as 1.20 × 10-8 M and 7.69 × 10-8 M, respectively. The formed complexes NHMI-Al3+ and NHMI-Mg2+ were analyzed by Job's plot, ESI-MS, 1H NMR and FT-IR. The coordination pockets and fluorescence mechanisms of two metal complexes were explored by density functional theory calculation. Moreover, NHMI showed low cytotoxicity and good cell permeability. Fluorescence bioimaging of Al3+/Mg2+ in MCF-7 cells with NHMI indicated its potential application in biological diagnostic analysis.

Abstract
In this work, we describe for the first time the synthesis of a thiocarbazone for the selective determination of Cu2+ in distilled beverages. The method was based on the complexation reaction of Cu2+ with the thiocarbazone, and the colored product was analyzed using a smartphone application. The thiocarbazone reacts with Cu2+ to form a 1:1 (metal:ligand) complex. The Cu2+ complex was characterized by UV, IR and NMR spectral analyses. The proposed reaction yields a yellow color, and therefore, channel B of the RGB system was used in the analysis. After optimizing the reaction conditions, an analytical curve was obtained to determine Cu2+ concentrations ranging between 0.25 and 6.75 mg L-1; the use of 400 μL sample volumes led to a relative standard deviation (n = 5) of 3.2% and a detection limit of 0.18 mg L-1. Recovery experiments were performed with sugar cane spirits, whiskies and tequilas to evaluate the accuracy of the method, and the recovery obtained ranged from 80.5 to 112.2%.

Abstract
A novel coumarin-derived acylhydrazone Schiff base fluorescent organogel (G1) was designed and synthesized. Gelator G1 can form stable organogels in isopropanol, tert-amyl alcohol, n-butanol and phenylamine. The organogel could be converted to solution by heating and the solution could be restored to gel state by cooling. The self-assemble mechanism of G1 was investigated by XRD, FT-IR and SEM techniques. The results indicated the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, Van der Waals interaction and π-π stacking are the forces for the self-assembly of the gelator to form the organogel. The optical properties of the compound were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectra. Further study presented that gelator G1 could selectively and sensitively response to Fe3+ only among tested cations. Beside the above functions, the organic gel factor G1 could also response to irradiation, heating and shaking, thus endowing the organogel with multi stimulus responsive properties.

Abstract
In the present study, a promising optical sensor (TR) was designed, synthesized, characterized and its chemosensing mechanism has been explored through 1H NMR, ESI-MS, UV-Vis absorption and emission spectral studies. This compound exhibits a drastic change in its optical properties when treated with Zn2+, whereas other metal ions do not respond. This provides a naked eye detection for Zn2+ ion. In methanolic medium, Zn2+ ion induces strong fluorescence in TR with large Stokes shifts up to ∼132 nm. A 5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity of TR in presence Zn2+ ion is due to inhibition of ESIPT (Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer) and -C=N isomerization with large increase in the ICT (Intramolecular Charge Transfer) character of TR in the excited state. The Job's plot and BH plots reveal the formation of 1: 1 stoichiometry with an estimated binding constant of 3.9 × 107 M-1. The detection limit of TR was found to be 3.85 nM. The TR could be regenerated by adding EDTA solution to the complex formed during interaction. The pH studies indicate that TR could render pH dependent fluorescence measurements in a live physiological environment. Computational technique was used to optimize the structures and the theoretical results are correlated with the experimental results. The possible utilization of TR as bio-imaging fluorescent sensor with 98.57% cell viability to detect Zn2+ in HeLa cells was also explored by fluorescent cell imager.

Abstract
A macroarray immobilisation of fluorophores on filter papers for sensing metal ions by in-situ reductive amination and carbodiimide coupling is reported herein. Chemometric approaches resulted in a rapid discovery of sensors that can synergistically discriminate up to 12 metal ions with great prediction accuracies. Covalently bound on paper, sensoring scaffolds that were synthesised from the macroarray format can readily be adopted as practical paper-based sensors with great reusability and sensitivity, achieving the limit of detection at low nanomolar level with some repeating spotting. Lastly, the discovered scaffolds were also confirmed to be functional as unbound molecules, thus paving the way for more diverse applications.

Abstract
We report a highly sensitive fluorescent probe based on p-dimethylaminobenzoyl derivatives (probe L) for the detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+. In this work, the probe L exhibited a fluorescent turn-on sensing model to Cu2+ and Zn2+ with a distinct fluorescent color change from colorless to green and yellow respectively. Probe L exhibited high selectivity as a fluorescent Cu2+/Zn2+ probe with a limit of detection (LOD) of 45 nM/17 nM. The results of 1H NMR titrations revealed that the response of L to Cu2+ and Zn2+ was triggered by the interaction of the thiophene unit and the metal ion. Furthermore, the fluorescence titrations and Job's plot curves displayed the binding ratio of 1:2 for Cu2+ and 1:1 for Zn2+ metal-L complex formation respectively. Density functional theory calculation also demonstrated the possibility of molecular luminescence and the process of metal-L complex formation. Additionally, fluorescent test strips have been prepared for convenient detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+, which means the convenient and rapid assay in real samples can be achieved.

Abstract
In this work, a novel optical fluoro-chemisensor was designed and synthesized for copper (II) ions detection. The sensor film is created by embedded N,N-Bis(2-hydroxo-5-bromobenzyl)ethylenediamine in poly vinyl chloride (PVC) film in presence of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as plasticizer. The receptor Schiff base reveals "off-on" mode with high selectivity, significant sensitivity to Cu(II) ions. The selectivity of optical sensor for Cu(II) ions is the result of chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). The optimal conditions of pH and response time at which higher efficiency of sensor film is performed was found to be 6.8 and 2.48min. The possible interference of other metal ions in solution was examined in presence of different types of metal ions. This film shows high selectivity and ultra-sensitivity with low detection limit LOD (1.1×10-8M). Thus, these considerable properties make it viable to monitor copper metal ions within very low concentration range (0-15×10-6M Cu(II)) and highly selective even in the presence of different types of metal ions. The sensor reversibility was achieved by utilizing EDTA solution with concentration of 0.1M solution.

Abstract
A simple chemosensor YS based on coumarin group was designed and synthesized. Its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of cyanide the sensor showed an immediate visible change in color from colorless to pale yellow by naked-eyes and produced a strong blue fluorescence rapidly in DMSO/H2O (3:7, v/v). The detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor to CN- is down to 1.69×10-7M. In addition YS could show fluorescence turn-on response rapidly for Zn2+ over other metals ions such as Fe3+, Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ and Mg2+ in aqueous solutions. Notably, this sensor served as a molecular switch, which was controlled by Zn2+ and EDTA cyclically. Test strips based on YS were fabricated, which could act as a convenient and efficient CN- and Zn2+ test kit. This chemosensor could achieve the detection of two ions, which need not depend on two different sensors.

Abstract
Synthesis of novel benzophenone-based chemosensor is presented for the selective sensing of Sn2+ ion. Screening of competitive metal ions was performed by competitive experiments. The specific cation recognition ability of chemosensor towards Sn2+ was investigated by experimental (UV-visible, fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR and HRMS) methods and further supported by Density Functional Theory study. The stoichiometric binding ratio and binding constant (Ka) for complex is found to be 1:1 and 1.50×104, respectively. The detection limit of Sn2+ towards chemosensor was found to be 0.3898ppb. Specific selectivity and superiority of chemosensor over another recently reported chemosensor is presented.

Abstract
A simple naphthol-based fluorescent receptor 1 was prepared and evaluated for its fluorescence response to heavy metal ions. Receptor 1 exhibits an 'off-on-type' mode with high selectivity in the presence of Zn(2+) ion. The selectivity of 1 for Zn(2+) is the consequence of combined effects of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), C = N isomerization and π-π stacking interaction between the two naphthalene rings.

Abstract
A fluorescent chemosensor (L) for Mg(2+) has been synthesized and characterized, which exhibits turn-on fluorescence response for Mg(2+) only in alcohol solvent (methanol or ethanol) with high sensitivity and selectivity. But in both nonpolar and polar solvents (cyclohexane, DCM, DMSO or MeCN), L showed negligible fluorescent response for Mg(2+). In order to discover the unique phenomenon, optical measurements, liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and a high performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) of L and L with Mg(2+) ions in solvents were studied. In alcohol solvent, [L+alcohol molecule] was formed and the mechanism aspect of L concerning the remarkable fluorescence response for Mg(2+) has been discussed.

Abstract
Schiff base is one of the easiest synthesizable chemosensor and exhibit strong coordination with metal ions; the property that has been vastly exploited for metal ions sensing. Simple Schiff base chemosensors (1a-d and 2a-d) were synthesized and demonstrated substitutional group dependent colorimetric sensing of metal ions. Chemosensor without (1a, 2a) and OCH3 substitution (1b, 2b) did not show any significant colour change for metal ions. However, a highly selective colorimetric change (colourless to pink) for Mn(2+) ions (10(-6)M) was observed with diethylamine substituted 1c, 2c. Hydroxyl substitution (1d, 2d) leads to selective colorimetric sensing (colourless to orange) of Fe(3+) ions (10(-6)M). PVA thin films of 2c/2d were fabricated and demonstrated selective colorimetric sensing of Mn(2+) and Fe(3+) ions. The practical applicability of the synthesized chemosensors were also demonstrated by performing selective colorimetric sensing of Mn(2+) and Fe(3+) ions in real samples such as tap, ground, pond and river water. Effect of substitution on the fluorescence selectivity of Zn(2+) has also been investigated.
