Unravelling the potential of magnetic nanoparticles: a comprehensive review of design and applications in analytical chemistry

The study of nanoparticles has emerged as a prominent research field, offering a wide range of applications across various disciplines. With their unique physical and chemical properties within the size range of 1-100 nm, nanoparticles have garnered significant attention. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exemplify promising super-magnetic characteristics, especially in the 10-20 nm size range, making them ideal for swift responses to applied magnetic fields. In this comprehensive review, we focus on MNPs suitable for analytical purposes. We investigate and classify them based on their analytical applications, synthesis routes, and overall utility, providing a detailed literature summary. By exploring a diverse range of MNPs, this review offers valuable insights into their potential application in various analytical scenarios.

Facile analysis of mycotoxin in coffee and tea samples using a novel semi-automated in-syringe based fast mycotoxin extraction (FaMEx) technique coupled with direct-injection ESI-MS/MS analysis

Identifying the risk of ochratoxin A in our daily food has become fundamental because of its toxicity. In this work, we report a novel semi-automated in-syringe-based fast mycotoxin extraction (IS-FaMEx) technique coupled with direct-injection electrospray-ionization tandem mass spectrometer (ESI-MS/MS) detection for the quantification of ochratoxin A in coffee and tea samples. Under the optimized conditions, the results reveal that the developed method's linearity was more remarkable, with a correlation coefficient of > 0.999 and > 92% extraction recovery with a precision of 6%. The detection and quantification limits for ochratoxin A were 0.2 and 0.8 ng g-1 for the developed method, respectively, which is lower than the European Union regulatory limit of toxicity for ochratoxin-A (5 ng g-1) in coffee. Furthermore, the newly developed modified IS-FaMEx-ESI-MS/MS exhibited lower signal suppression of 8% with a good green metric score of 0.64. In addition, the IS-FaMEx-ESI-MS/MS showed good extraction recovery, matrix elimination, good detection, and quantification limits with high accuracy and precision due to the fewer extraction steps with semi-automation. Therefore, the presented method can be applied as a potential methodology for the detection of mycotoxins in food products for food safety and quality control purposes.

Semiconductor quantum dots in photoelectrochemical sensors from fabrication to biosensing applications

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising class of nanomaterials for developing new photoelectrodes and photoelectrochemistry systems for energy storage, transfer, and biosensing applications. These materials have unique electronic and photophysical properties and can be used as optical nanoprobes in displays, biosensors, imaging, optoelectronics, energy storage and energy harvesting. Researchers have recently been exploring the use of QDs in photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors, which involve exciting a QD-interfaced photoactive material with a flashlight source and generating a photoelectrical current as an output signal. The simple surface properties of QDs also make them suitable for addressing issues related to sensitivity, miniaturization, and cost-effectiveness. This technology has the potential to replace current laboratory practices and equipment, such as spectrophotometers, used for testing sample absorption and emission. Semiconductor QD-based PEC sensors offer simple, fast, and easily miniaturized sensors for analyzing a variety of analytes. This review summarizes the various strategies for interfacing QD nanoarchitectures for PEC sensing, as well as their signal amplification. PEC sensing devices, particularly those used for the detection of disease biomarkers, biomolecules (glucose, dopamine), drugs, and various pathogens, have the potential to revolutionize the biomedical field. This review discusses the advantages of semiconductor QD-based PEC biosensors and their fabrication methods, with a focus on disease diagnostics and the detection of various biomolecules. Finally, the review provides prospects and considerations for QD-based photoelectrochemical sensor systems in terms of their sensitivity, speed, and portability for biomedical applications.

Sialyl-Tn Antigen-Imprinted Dual Fluorescent Core-Shell Nanoparticles for Ratiometric Sialyl-Tn Antigen Detection and Dual-Color Labeling of Cancer Cells

Sialyl-Tn (STn or sialyl-Thomsen-nouveau) is a carbohydrate antigen expressed by more than 80% of human carcinomas. We here report a strategy for ratiometric STn detection and dual-color cancer cell labeling, particularly, by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Imprinting was based on spectroscopic studies of a urea-containing green-fluorescent monomer 1 and STn-Thr-Na (sodium salt of Neu5Acα2-6GalNAcα-O-Thr). A few-nanometer-thin green-fluorescent polymer shell, in which STn-Thr-Na was imprinted with 1, other comonomers, and a cross-linker, was synthesized from the surface of red-emissive carbon nanodot (R-CND)-doped silica nanoparticles, resulting in dual fluorescent STn-MIPs. Dual-color labeling of cancer cells was achieved since both red and green emissions were detected in two separate channels of the microscope and an improved accuracy was obtained in comparison with single-signal MIPs. The flow cytometric cell analysis showed that the binding of STn-MIPs was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than that of non-imprinted polymer (NIP) control particles within the same cell line, allowing to distinguish populations. Based on the modularity of the luminescent core-fluorescent MIP shell architecture, the concept can be transferred in a straightforward manner to other target analytes.

Environmental impacts of post-consumer plastic wastes: Treatment technologies towards eco-sustainability and circular economy

The huge amounts of plastic production (millions of tons) are carried out all around world every year and EU is one of the biggest consumers of these products. In 2021, recycling rate of plastic wastes around 32.5% in the EU and the rest end up on their journey in landfills and oceans that lead to environmental pollution which is a crucial global concern. Thus, it is important to take necessary steps to control the use of such plastic and to sustainably dispose them. One of the solutions to the problem is to use a better alternative to plastics which doesn't degrade land, water or air nor affects living organisms. Circular economy is another answer to this problem, it would ensure prevention of post-consumer plastic waste from getting formed. In addition, sustainable disposal approaches for plastic waste such as pyrolysis, plasma gasification, photocatalytic degradation, and production of value-added products from polymer waste can be explored. These recycling methods has huge potential for research and studies and can play a crucial in eliminating post-consumer plastic waste. This review paper aims to discuss the environmental effects of post-consumer plastic wastes as well as the emerging approaches for the treatment of these environmental wastes towards eco-sustainability and circular economy.

Greenness of lab-on-a-chip devices for analytical processes: Advances & future prospects

Lab-on-a-chip devices have now-a-days become an important aspect of analytical/bioanalytical chemistry having wide range of applications including clinical diagnosis, drug screening, cell biology, environmental monitoring, food safety analysis etc. Conventional lab-on-a-chip devices generally employ chemicals that are not environmentally friendly and were commonly fabricated on hard plastic platform which are non-degradable and hence ignore the importance of green analytical chemistry. In today's scenario, it is highly imperative to protect our environment by using less toxic and environmentally friendly chemicals/solvents and biocompatible platforms. Accordingly, the present article comprehensively reviews on the various green aspects of lab-on-a-chip devices for analytical processes which aim at fabricating environmentally friendly and cost-effective downsized devices so that the risk factor at the user's end upon longer exposure as well as to the environment can be reduced. The decisive factors for the accomplishment of green aspects of lab-on-a-chip devices including sample preparation using lab-on-a-chip systems to minimize the amount of sample/solvents to few microliters only, substitution of harmful solvents with green alternatives, minimal waste generation or proper treatment of waste and biodegradable and biocompatible platforms for fabricating lab-on-a-chip devices have been discussed in details. Additionally, the challenges that may hinder their commercialization are also critically discussed.

Conductive Polymer-Based Nanocomposites as Powerful Sorbents: Design, Preparation and Extraction Applications

Conductive polymers as composite materials have been attracted tremendous attention due to their versatile and excellent features such as tunable conductivity, facile synthesis and fabrication, high chemical and thermal stability etc. These characteristics make them versatile and let them being used in numerous fields including microelectronics, optics and biosensors. Throughout the mentioned fields, conductive polymers particularly perform as effective sorbents. Although tremendous efforts have been put into this topic, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive up-to-date review on the applications of conductive polymers as efficient sorbents has not been reported. The main objective of this paper is to make a significant contribution to the recent literature toward the synthesis and extraction applications of conductive polymers as efficient sorbents.

Design and Catalytic Behaviour of Hosted in Activated Carbon Foam CoxZn1−xFe2O4 Ferrites

Carbon foams with different surface functionality and tailored texture characteristics were prepared from mixtures containing coal tar pitch and furfural in different proportions. The obtained materials were used as a host matrix for the preparation of zinc- and cobalt-mixed ferrite nanoparticles. The texture, morphology, phase composition, and the related redox and catalytic properties of the obtained composites were characterized by low-temperature nitrogen physisorption, XRD, SEM, HRTEM, FTIR, Mössbauer spectroscopy, TPR and catalytic decomposition of methanol to syngas. The impact of the carbon support on the formation of Co- and Zn-mixed ferrites was discussed in detail using KIT-6 silica-based modifications as reference samples. The catalytic behavior of the ferrites was considered in a complex relation to their composition, morphology, location in the porous matrix and metal ions distribution in the spinel sub-lattices. The higher amount of furfural in the carbon foam precursor promoted the formation of cobalt-rich, more accessible and highly active methanol decomposition to syngas spinel particles.

Molecular prospect of type-2 diabetes: Nanotechnology based diagnostics and therapeutic intervention

About ninety percent of all diabetic conditions account for T2D caused due to abnormal insulin secretion/ action or increased hepatic glucose production. Factors that contribute towards the aetiology of T2D could be well explained through biochemical, molecular, and cellular aspects. In this review, we attempt to explain the recent evolving molecular and cellular advancement associated with T2D pathophysiology. Current progress fabricated in T2D research concerning intracellular signaling cascade, inflammasome, autophagy, genetic and epigenetics changes is discretely explained in simple terms. Present available anti-diabetic therapeutic strategies commercialized and their limitations which are needed to be acknowledged are addressed in the current review. In particular, the pre-eminence of nanotechnology-based approaches to nullify the inadequacy of conventional anti-diabetic therapeutics and heterogeneous nanoparticulated systems exploited in diabetic researches are also discretely mentioned and are also listed in a tabular format in the review. Additionally, as a future prospect of nanotechnology, the review presents several strategic hypotheses to ameliorate the austerity of T2D by an engineered smart targeted nano-delivery system. In detail, an effort has been made to hypothesize novel nanotechnological based therapeutic strategies, which exploits previously described inflammasome, autophagic target points. Utilizing graphical description it is explained how a smart targeted nano-delivery system could promote β-cell growth and development by inducing the Wnt signaling pathway (inhibiting Gsk3β), inhibiting inflammasome (inhibiting NLRP3), and activating autophagic target points (protecting Atg3/Atg7 complex from oxidative stress) thereby might ameliorate the severity of T2D. Additionally, several targeting molecules associated with autophagic and epigenetic factors are also highlighted, which can be exploited in future diabetic research.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication and Application of Graphene Microfluidic Sensors

This review reports the progress of the recent development of graphene-based microfluidic sensors. The introduction of microfluidics technology provides an important possibility for the advance of graphene biosensor devices for a broad series of applications including clinical diagnosis, biological detection, health, and environment monitoring. Compared with traditional (optical, electrochemical, and biological) sensing systems, the combination of graphene and microfluidics produces many advantages, such as achieving miniaturization, decreasing the response time and consumption of chemicals, improving the reproducibility and sensitivity of devices. This article reviews the latest research progress of graphene microfluidic sensors in the fields of electrochemistry, optics, and biology. Here, the latest development trends of graphene-based microfluidic sensors as a new generation of detection tools in material preparation, device assembly, and chip materials are summarized. Special emphasis is placed on the working principles and applications of graphene-based microfluidic biosensors, especially in the detection of nucleic acid molecules, protein molecules, and bacterial cells. This article also discusses the challenges and prospects of graphene microfluidic biosensors.

Mode-multiplex plasmonic sensor for multi-analyte detection

Highly sensitive mode-multiplex miniaturized sensors enable the detection and quantification of multiple biomolecules simultaneously through their real-time interactions. Here, we demonstrate a grapefruit photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based mode-multiplex surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor that detects multiple analytes simultaneously. Three grapefruit-shaped air-holes are internally coated with plasmonic gold (Au) material, which allows them to act as mode-multiplex channels that detect three unknown analytes. The sensor performance was investigated using the finite element method (FEM), and the optimized fiber structure was fabricated with the standard stack-and-draw method. For the y-polarized mode, channels one and three showed the maximum wavelength sensitivities of 2000 and 18,000 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) at the analyte refractive indices of 1.34 and 1.41, respectively. On the other hand, channel two showed the maximum wavelength sensitivity of 3000 nm/RIU at the analyte refractive index (RI) of 1.36 for the x-polarized mode. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a mode-multiplex grapefruit PCF-based SPR sensor to simultaneously detect and quantify three different analytes. We anticipate that the proposed sensor will find potential applications in the detection of real-time biomolecular interactions and binding affinity.

Effective preparation of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticle for the rapid and selective extraction of cyfluthrin from honeysuckle

Cyfluthrin is a widely used pesticide. In this study, a sensitive and efficient magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was prepared by surface molecular imprinting, which used functionalized Fe₃O₄ particles as magnetic cores. Cyfluthrin was extracted and enriched using magnetic molecularly polymer for analyzing pesticide residue of Chinese herbal medicines. The crystal type, microstructure, particle size, saturation magnetization, and characteristic functional groups of the synthesized MMIPs were analyzed by analysis equipment. The results of isothermal adsorption and kinetic adsorption indicated that MMIPs reached adsorption equilibrium at 30 min, with a maximum capacity of 4.9 mg g^-1, which had good adsorption performance, while selective adsorption experiments showed that MMIPs had higher affinity for cyfluthrin. Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 32.987 ng ml^-1 and 109.955 ng ml^-1, respectively. And linear range (30-3000ng ml^-1) of cyfluthrin with correlation coefficient R²=0.9979, and MMIPs were used in honeysuckle, the recoveries were 91.5%∼97.2%, and RSD was 5.35%∼8.32% (n = 3). It is indicated that the magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer can be used as an effective material for the specific separation of cyfluthrin from honeysuckle.

Ethical, legal, social and economics issues of graphene

There are several applications and innovations of graphene that can change the world in the areas of energy, health, and electro-electronics. Graphene is ideal for bringing together the research sector and the industry, considering that the potential market is huge, as well as profitability. The purpose of this chapter is to present social, economic, ethical, and legal issues involving graphene. Among the existing research with the use of graphene, we can highlight an antibacterial role, acceleration of the internet, membranes that capture carbon dioxide. The global graphene market has an average annual growth of 32%. There is also a manual on processes for making graphene. However, intellectual property must be used in a way that respects its social function and further research on graphene is necessary due to the market trend and applications in several areas.

Graphene based sensors

The two dimensional, honeycomb structured, single carbon layered graphene has extensively been used in the field of sensor detection due to its unique physicochemical properties. These properties such as excellent electrical conductivity, high electron mobility, tunable optical properties, room temperature quantum Hall effect, large surface to volume ratio, high mechanical strength, and ease of functionalization, make it an ideal nanomaterial for sensor development. This has enabled the fabrication of a large variety of highly sensitive sensors which include colorimetric, electrochemical, potentiometric, fluorescence, etc. based sensors. These sensors in conjugation with graphene or its derivatives such as graphene quantum dots, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, etc. show highly desirable properties such as high sensitivity (detecting minute amounts of target analyte), specificity (no cross reactivity while detecting the target analyte), rapid results, low cost, extended storage shelf life and robustness (stability), and easy-to-use capabilities (user-friendly). This book chapter gives a detailed overview of all the advances made in the development and fabrication of novel graphene based sensors and their application in point of care (PoC) detection of various diseases as well as health monitoring devices. The different sensors, their methods of fabrication, their sensitivity and the analytes and biomolecules used have been discussed in detail and compared.

Solid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance immunoassay for the prostate-specific antigen by using protein-coated magnetic nanoparticles

A solid phase NMR-based sandwich immunoassay for the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is presented. Carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles were functionalized with bovine serum albumin, coupled to monoclonal antibodies, and then used as magnetic labels. A nitrocellulose membrane with 8-μm pores was coated with capture antibodies and subsequently incubated with a serum sample and a suspension of the nanoconjugate. Test strips were placed in a portable homemade NMR relaxometer. Magnetic nanoparticles attached to nitrocellulose decrease the T2 relaxation time of the water protons located inside the pores of the membrane. Thus, T2 is inversely proportional to the concentration of the antigen (PSA) in the sample. The assay can be performed within 4 h. The detection limit is 0.44 ng mL^-1. Kallikrein 2, human chorionic gonadotropin, and α-fetoprotein do not interfere. Nanomaterials-based Electrochemical Immunosensors

With the development of nanomaterials and sensor technology, nanomaterials-based electrochemical immunosensors have been widely employed in various fields. Nanomaterials for electrode modification are emerging one after another in order to improve the performance of electrochemical immunosensors. When compared with traditional detection methods, electrochemical immunosensors have the advantages of simplicity, real-time analysis, high sensitivity, miniaturization, rapid detection time, and low cost. Here, we summarize recent developments in electrochemical immunosensors based on nanomaterials, including carbon nanomaterials, metal nanomaterials, and quantum dots. Additionally, we discuss research challenges and future prospects for this field of study.
