Perceived social support associated with posttraumatic growth in liver transplant recipients: A cross-sectional study

Mediation effect of illness acceptance between perceived social support and self-management behaviors in rural elderly with coronary heart disease

OBJECTIVE

To explore the relationship between perceived social support, acceptance of illness, and self-management behaviors and the mediating role of acceptance of illness in perceived social support and self-management behaviors.

METHODS

Between August 2022 and February 2023, 731 rural older adults with coronary heart disease in Feicheng City participated in this study. Correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between variables, and mediating effects were analyzed using AMOS 23.0 software.

RESULTS

Perceived social support and acceptance of illness were positively correlated with self-management behaviors. Acceptance of illness mediated the relationship between the perceived social support and the three dimensions of self-management behavior.

CONCLUSION

These findings contribute to the understanding that increased perceived social support and acceptance of illness are more likely to improve self-management behaviors.

Investigation of Depression and Post-Traumatic Growth in Renal Transplant Recipients via Self-Assessment

Objective: In this study, we aimed to determine post-traumatic growth and depression levels in renal transplant recipients and the relationship between these two variables. Design and Methods: The study was conducted with a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design. The data for the study were collected at the organ transplant unit of a research and training hospital located in the west of Turkey. The sample of the study included 122 kidney transplant recipients (n = 122). A Sociodemographic Information Form, the Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) Inventory, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were employed to collect data. In the analyses of the data, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, an independent-samples t-test, post hoc tests, and Pearson correlation tests were used. Results: As the ages of the renal transplant recipients increased, their depression scores decreased, while their PTG scores increased. Higher depression levels were identified in the female participants compared to the male participants and in those with a low income compared to other income groups. The lowest PTG levels were found in the recipients who received their kidney transplants from third-degree relatives. Age, gender, economic status, and time of transplant were predictors of depression. The identity of the donor was the most significant predictor of PTG (62% explanation rate). A strong and inverse correlation was found between depression and PTG (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Post-traumatic growth was found to decrease depression. However, while poor economic status led to depression, high economic status did not lead to a significant change in PTG. As education levels increased, PTG decreased, but education status did not have any significant effect on depression. On the other hand, there was a negative correlation between PTG and depression. The results obtained in this study are valuable and important in terms of understanding depression better and determining PTG as a significant factor that could alleviate it.

The prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses based on the PTGI: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

The urgency and risk of clinical nursing may cause nurses to experience traumatic stress, but it may also lead to posttraumatic growth. However, no study has comprehensively analyzed the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses using a unified outcome measure and a validated assessment tool.

AIM

This study aims to systematically assess the prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses based on the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI).

METHODS

Ten databases, including The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Springerlink, Embase, Chinese Biomedical (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang, and VIP databases, were searched as of December 31, 2022. The prevalence of posttraumatic growth was pooled using Stata 17.0 software. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the systematic review and meta-analysis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022365620.

RESULTS

A total of 30 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, consisting of 14,022 nurses worldwide from four countries. In our study, the pooled mean score of posttraumatic growth among nurses was 66.34 (95% CI: 61.25-71.43). From 2015 to 2022, nurses' posttraumatic growth levels gradually increased. In addition, Turkey nurses have the lowest posttraumatic growth levelnurses who experienced workplace violence have a lower posttraumatic growth level compared with other nurses; while nurses aged over 30 and male have higher posttraumatic growth levels.

CONCLUSIONS

While several studies on the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses have been published, the reported data are quite different. Our systematic review and meta-analysis found that nurses' posttraumatic growth level was "moderate," and nurses' posttraumatic growth may vary based on publication year, country, traumatic event, age, and gender.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Our findings may provide a theoretical basis for hospital administrators and policy makers to scientifically manage human resources, comprehensively evaluate nurses' mental health, and promote nurses' posttraumatic growth in different traumatic events, which is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policy guidelines.

The relationship between compliance with immunosuppressive therapy and religious attitudes of kidney transplant patients

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between adherence to immunosuppressive therapy and religious attitudes of kidney transplant patients.

METHOD

The research was conducted descriptively with patients followed in the transplantation clinic of the between 2015 and 2019. The sample consisted of 142 patients who met the study criteria. Before starting the study, necessary permissions were obtained from the institution, ethics committee and patients.

RESULTS

There was a significant relationship between marital status, educational status, income status and the mean score of the immunosuppressive treatment adherence scale, and between family type and the mean score of the religious attitude scale (p < 0.05). Of these results only; It was determined that there was a significant relationship between the priority order of drugs in life, duration of renal failure and time after transplantation and drug compliance scale average score (p < 0.05). Those who do not want to donate their kidneys to their relatives, those who do not want to donate organs when they die, those whose religious beliefs affect drug compliance, the duration of kidney failure is between 1 and 12 months and the period after transplantation 13- It was determined that those who had 60 months had a "more positive religious attitude" (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

It was found that the mean score of the immunosuppressive treatment compliance scale of kidney transplant patients was at a good level, while the mean score of religious attitude was below the middle level. In addition, there was no significant relationship between the mean score of the immunosuppressive treatment compliance scale and the mean score of the religious attitude scale.

Associations between Psychological Resilience and Social Support with Posttraumatic Growth in Breast Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

This cross-sectional study examined the associations of psychological resilience, perceived social support, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in breast cancer (BC) patients (N = 203). The participants' mean age was 43.14 ± 9.06, 80.3% were married, 40.9% had a university degree, 61.6% were unemployed, and 72.4% reported a moderate economic status. No significant correlation was found between PTG and psychological resilience, while a moderate and positive correlation was observed between PTG and perceived social support. A weak and positive correlation was also detected between perceived social support and psychological resilience.    Professionals working in the field of psycho-oncology and social work can make attempts to increase psychological resilience, perceived social support, and PTG in BC patients.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well-Being and Post-Traumatic Growth in Turkish Patients Undergoing Solid Organ Transplantation

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being and post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 366 patients who presented to the organ transplantation polyclinic of a university hospital between September 2021 and February 2022 in Turkey. The mean Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory and Spiritual Well-Being Scale scores of solid organ transplant patients were 81.33 ± 20.28 and 37.18 ± 8.69, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between post-traumatic growth and spiritual well-being. According to linear regression analysis, spiritual well-being, gender, marital status, transplanted organ, donor type, and previous mental disorders were statistically significant predictive factors that affected post-traumatic growth. Spiritual well-being was an important variable that affected post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. Therefore, healthcare providers can provide individualized psychosocial-spiritual care and counseling services that increase post-traumatic growth in patients after organ transplantation.

Social support and transplantation

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Social support has many benefits for patients undergoing organ transplantation, though inclusion of it as criteria for transplant listing has been debated. This review highlights recent developments in the research regarding social support and organ transplantation, including the impact of social support on transplantation and caregivers, interventions, COVID-19, and ethical perspectives.

RECENT FINDINGS

Social support and perceived social support have benefits for transplant patients, including increased quality of life and adherence. The providers of social support may also be impacted and the impact may vary based on patient and caregiver characteristics, including organ group and caregiver ethnicity. Debates regarding COVID-19 vaccine requirements for caregivers and ethical concerns about the inclusion of social support as criteria for transplant listing are also explored.

SUMMARY

Transplant patients benefit from social support, though additional research is needed on the impact of social support on transplant outcomes and the utility of the use of social support as criteria for transplant listing. There is also a need for more robust research on diverse caregiver populations, including the identification and use of supportive interventions for caregivers.
