A single-arm pilot of MyInspiration: a novel digital resource to support spiritual needs of patients undergoing cancer-directed surgery

PURPOSE

This study aimed to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction associated with the MyInspiration intervention, a digital spiritual support tool for patients undergoing cancer surgery. Additionally, we evaluated changes in spiritual well-being and the ability to find meaning in their experience with cancer before and after the intervention.

METHODS

This was a prospective, single-arm pilot study. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed by ratio of participants who completed all assessments among individuals who had signed consent forms. Satisfaction was assessed with 5 Likert-style questions around user experience. Patient spiritual well-being and finding meaning in their experience with cancer were measured at baseline and post-intervention.

RESULTS

Forty patients were enrolled, the majority of whom were female (80.0%) and diagnosed with breast cancer (52.5%), with an average age of 54.4 years (SD = 13.7, range 29.0-82.0). Regarding feasibility and acceptability, 76.9% of patients who consented to participate completed the full study protocol. In assessing satisfaction, 59% of patients were satisfied with the overall experience of MyInspiration. There was no difference in spiritual well-being pre-/post-intervention. There was a difference in pre (M = 1.95, SD = .95) and post (M = 2.23, SD = .86) scores relative to "finding meaning in the cancer experience" with a mean difference of 0.28 (p = 0.008).

CONCLUSION

MyInspiration was feasible and acceptable to patients, and the majority were satisfied with the tool. The intervention was associated with changes in patients' ability to find meaning within their cancer experience. A randomized control trial is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the tool in a broader population of patients with cancer.

The Relationship Between Preparedness for Caregiving and Spiritual Well-Being in the Carers of Stroke Patients: A Case Study in Türkiye

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between preparedness for caregiving and spiritual well-being in the carers of stroke patients. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 130 primary carers of patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of stroke at the neurology clinic of a hospital. It was determined that the participants had moderate levels of preparedness for caregiving, they had high levels of spiritual well-being, and there was a positive significant relationship between these two variables. According to the regression analysis results, the spiritual well-being level of the participants was a predictor of their preparedness for caregiving (B: 0.144, p < 0.001). The results of this study demonstrated that the spiritual well-being of the carers of stroke patients is important in increasing preparedness for caregiving. In this context, to ensure that the carers of all stroke patients feel prepared for the caregiving process, it is recommended to evaluate their preparedness levels, support them in their preparation for their caregiving roles, and identify their spiritual needs.

The comparison of spiritual well-being and empathic tendencies in midwifery students: A cross-sectional study from Turkey

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between spiritual well-being and empathic tendencies of midwifery students and the affecting factors. The sample of this descriptive-correlation type study, one of the descriptive research methods, included 237 midwifery students. The data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, the Empathic Tendency Scale, and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Empathic tendency was higher among those who chose the midwifery department voluntarily, those who liked the department, those who felt that the department was suitable for them, those who participated in social and scientific activities, those who wanted to progress in the profession, those who wanted to work in the field and those who followed publications related to the field; Spiritual well-being was higher among those who felt that the department was suitable for them, those who participated in social and scientific activities, those who wanted to progress in the profession, those who participated in activities that provided the development of the profession, those who wanted to work in the field and those who followed publications related to the field. It was determined that the empathic tendencies and spiritual well-being of midwifery students were at a moderate level, and as a result of the comparison of Empathic Tendency Scale and Spiritual Well-being scale scores, there was a significant positive relationship between them.

The Meaning of Life and Religious Coping in the Fight Against Cancer: A Study with Oncology Patients in Brazil in Light of Viktor Frankl's Theory

This study aimed to describe the perception of the meaning of life and coping strategies of 19 patients with cancer at a public hospital in Brazil. This is descriptive and qualitative research that used Amedeo Giorgi's phenomenological model, and the interpretation was performed in light of Viktor Frankl's theory. Two themes have emerged: (1) the perception of the meaning of life in the experience with cancer and (2) religious coping to fight the disease. This study showed that revealing the meaning of life in the cancer experience contributes to better treatment compliance, a more favorable view of the future and better quality of life. On the other hand, religious coping is the strategy most used by patients who believe in God, showing a greater state of psychological and spiritual well-being.

Effects of meaning therapy on spirituality, psychological health, and quality of life in patients with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Objective

This study aimed to systematically review studies of meaning therapy on patients with cancer and to evaluate its effectiveness on spiritual outcomes, psychological outcomes, and quality of life (QOL).

Methods

A comprehensive literature search were performed in five international databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, and CINAHL) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, and CBM) from the inception to August 2023. The methodological quality of each included studies was evaluated by using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. The random-effects model or fixed-effects model was utilized for effect size analysis, and the standardized mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) along with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed. Meta-analysis was conducted by using the RevMan software 5.4.1.

Results

Eight randomized controlled trials with 1251 participants were included in this review. Meta-analyses revealed that meaning therapy can significantly improve the spiritual outcomes including meaning in life (SMD = -0.48; 95% CI = -0.89 to -0.07; P = 0.02), hopelessness (SMD = -0.30; 95% CI = -0.51 to -0.09; P = 0.005), self-esteem (MD = -2.74; 95% CI = -4.17 to -1.32; P = 0.0002) and spiritual well-being (MD = -3.32; 95% CI = -5.63 to -1.01; P = 0.005), psychological outcomes including anxiety (MD = -0.66; 95% CI = -1.30 to -0.01; P = 0.05), depression (SMD = -0.37; 95% CI = -0.55 to -0.20; P < 0.0001), psychological distress (SMD = -0.35; 95% CI = -0.70 to -0.01; P = 0.04) and desire for hastened death (MD = -0.76; 95% CI = -1.47 to -0.05; P = 0.04), and QOL (SMD = -0.29; 95% CI = -0.50 to -0.09; P = 0.006) in patients with cancer.

Conclusions

Meaning therapy has positive effects on improving spirituality, psychological health, and QOL of patients with cancer. More high-quality randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes are warranted to confirm the results of our review and to clarify the long-term effects of meaning therapy in the future.

The relationship between earthquake risk perceptions, religious orientation, spiritual well-being in individuals with and without earthquake experience: a cross-sectional study

The physical and psychological effects of earthquakes on individuals with their experience dimension are important. This study aimed to examine the relationship between earthquake risk perception, religious orientation, and spiritual well-being among individuals with and without earthquake experience. The data collection instruments included a socio-demographic information questionnaire, earthquake risk perception scale, religious orientation scale, and three-factor spiritual well-being scale. Statistical evaluations were performed using independent samples t test, one-way ANOVA test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test (Levene), Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses. About 59.9% of the participants had experienced an earthquake. Individuals with earthquake experience scored 33.04 ± 7.80 on the earthquake risk perception scale, 100.65 ± 20.80 on the religious orientation scale, and 119.66 ± 18.87 on the three-factor spiritual well-being scale. Those without earthquake experience scored 31.57 ± 7.74, 96.70 ± 18.46, and 114.09 ± 18.04 on the respective scales. The average scores on the earthquake risk perception scale were found to be statistically significant with respect to gender, while the average scores on the religious orientation scale and the three-factor spiritual well-being scale were found to be statistically significant with respect to both gender and substance use. The regression analysis revealed that religious orientation and three-factor spiritual well-being significantly predicted 13.5% of the variance in earthquake risk perception. Studies to increase individuals' risk perception are important in minimizing the destructive effects of earthquakes in countries in the earthquake zone.

Death Anxiety in Patients with a History of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Spiritual Well-Being and Coping Strategies

Patients who have previously undergone coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) were prone to death anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. It appears that spiritual well-being and appropriate coping strategies may mitigate the harmful effects of death anxiety. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the level of death anxiety in patients with CABG during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigate the relationship between spiritual well-being, coping strategies and death anxiety.This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with CABG history in Tehran from June 2021 to February 2022. The face-to-face questionnaire, containing questions on demographics, Templer's death anxiety scale, the spiritual well-being questionnaire, and the ways of coping questionnaire was administered to collect data. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive-analytical statistics, correlation tests, and logistic regression models.Participants' mean age was 55.59 ± 12.78 years. The mean death anxiety score was 10.00 ± 2.16, with 87% of participants reporting high levels and 13% reporting low levels of death anxiety. Based on the results, there was a significant negative correlation between death anxiety and coping strategies, as well as subscales of distancing, seeking social support, accepting responsibility, and planful problem-solving. Logistic regression showed that with the increase in the score of spiritual well-being, the odds of having high levels of death anxiety decreased (p < 0.05). Furthermore, increasing the total score of coping strategies, and the score of self-controlling, seeking social support, accepting responsibility, and planful problem-solving, significantly reduced the odds of high levels of death anxiety (p < 0.05).The study showed that patients with a CABG history experienced high death anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the findings, spiritual well-being and coping strategies, especially self-controlling, seeking social support, accepting responsibility, and planful problem-solving, may reduce the odds of severe death anxiety. These should be considered as effective targets for psychological intervention in these patients.

The impact of spiritual well-being and social support on substance use treatment outcomes within a sample of predominantly Black/African American adults

INTRO

Substance use and associated problems often return following treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), which disproportionally impact Black/African American (AA) individuals. Social support and spiritual well-being are sources of recovery capital identified as particularly important among Black/AA adults. Social support and spiritual well-being are also posited mechanisms in 12-step; thus, this study tested the effects of social support and spiritual well-being on substance use outcomes over time, distinct from 12-step involvement, among Black/AA adults post-SUD treatment. The study hypothesized that social support and spiritual well-being would demonstrate significant interactions with time, respectively, on substance use frequency and substance use consequences, above the effect of 12-step involvement.

METHOD

The study drew data from a study of 262 adults (95.4 % Black/AA) entering residential SUD treatment (NCT#01189552). Assessments were completed at pretreatment and at 3-, 6-, and 12-months posttreatment. Two generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) tested the effects of social support and spiritual well-being, above the effect of 12-step involvement, on substance use frequency and substance use consequences over the course of 12-months posttreatment.

RESULTS

Higher spiritual well-being predicted significantly less frequent substance use during recovery (β = 0.00, p = .03). Greater 12-step involvement predicted significantly fewer substance use consequences during recovery (β = 0.00, p = .02). In post hoc analyses the effect of spiritual well-being and 12-step involvement dissipated by 3.5- and 6.6-months posttreatment, respectively. The study found no significant effects of social support over time.

DISCUSSION

Spiritual well-being and 12-step involvement are associated with lower substance use and substance use consequences, respectively, in the early months of posttreatment recovery among Black/AA adults. These findings contribute to the growing recovery capital literature informing paths to recovery and sources of support outside of 12-step affiliation. However, these effects diminish over time.

Relationship among post-traumatic growth, spiritual well-being, and perceived social support in Chinese women with gynecological cancer

This study aimed to examine the correlation between post-traumatic growth (PTG), spiritual well-being (SWB), perceived social support (PSS), and demographic and clinical factors in Chinese gynecological cancer patients. Through convenience sampling, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 771 adult patients with gynecological cancer. The European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Spiritual Well-being 32 (EORTC QLQ-SWB32), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to measure SWB, PTG, and PSS. A Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the possible factors contributing to PTG. The subscale with the highest centesimal score in the PTGI was the Appreciation of Life Scale, and the lowest was New Possibility. Gynecologic cancer patients with younger ages (B =  - 0.313, P = 0.002), perceived more family support (B = 1.289, P < 0.001), had more existential (B = 0.865, P = 0.010), and had religious belief (B = 5.760, P = 0.034) may have more PTG. Spiritual well-being, perceived social support, younger age, and religious beliefs are associated with post-traumatic growth in gynecological cancer patients. Healthcare staff could provide more professional support to younger patients with religious beliefs. Promoting social support and spiritual well-being could potentially serve as effective interventions for boosting PTG among gynecological cancer.

Psychosocial symptoms associated with spiritual well-being in Latino patients and caregivers coping with advanced cancer

PURPOSE

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among hopelessness, anxiety, and depression, with spiritual well-being in patients and family caregivers.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was administered to patients (n = 57) and caregivers (n = 57) that incorporated assessments that measured spiritual well-being, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, quality of life, family relationship, burden, fatalism, religiosity, and distress. Logistic regression and cross-tabulation analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between hopelessness, anxiety, and depression, with spiritual well-being. Logistic regression was used to quantify the impact of spiritual well-being on anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. Additionally, cross-tabulations with chi-square tests were conducted to explore associations between severity of hopelessness and severity of anxiety and depression.

RESULTS

Logistic regression analyses showed negative associations between spiritual well-being and mental health outcomes, although not all findings were statistically significant. Among caregivers, a significant negative relationship was observed for depression (B =  - 0.161, p = 0.022). Hopelessness also exhibited a negative association with spiritual well-being among caregivers (B =  - 0.099, p = 0.054) and patients (B =  - .152, p = 0.038). Cross-tabulations highlighted significant associations in the severity of hopelessness symptoms with anxiety and depression levels among caregivers (p < .001).

CONCLUSION

Results reveal a relationship among psychosocial symptoms among Latino patient-caregivers coping with cancer. By emphasizing spiritual well-being, hopelessness, and anxiety and involving family patients and caregivers in the treatment process as a unit of care. Also, it indicates the need to develop culturally tailored interventions that aim to provide valuable assistance to Latino patients and caregivers coping with cancer.

Reminiscence therapy relieves anxiety, depression and boosts spiritual well-being in both stroke patients and their spouse caregivers: a randomized, controlled study : Reminiscence therapy in stroke patients/caregivers

AIMS

Reminiscence therapy (RT) is a common nursing care program to ameliorate psychological disorders, while its application in stroke patients and their spouse caregivers is rare. Thus, this randomized, controlled study intended to investigate the influence of RT on anxiety, depression, and spiritual well-being in these individuals.

METHODS

Totally, 162 couples of stroke patients and their spouse caregivers were randomly assigned to receive RT (N = 81) and control care (CC) (N = 81) by pairs 4 times per month for 6 months. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Spiritual Well-being scale (FACIT-Sp) were evaluated at month (M)0, M1, M3, and M6.

RESULTS

In stroke patients, RT reduced HADS-A score at M3 (P = 0.043) and M6 (P = 0.020), and HADS-D score at M6 (P = 0.034), while increased FACIT-Sp score at M1 (P = 0.023), M3 (P = 0.010), and M6 (P = 0.004) compared to CC. Meanwhile, RT induced greater ameliorations in HADS-A (P = 0.049) and FACIT-Sp (P < 0.001) scores from M0 to M6 versus CC, but less in HADS-D score (P = 0.076). In the aspect of spouse caregivers, RT deceased HADS-A score at M1 (P = 0.042), M3 (P = 0.001), and M6 (P < 0.001), lowered HADS-D score at M3 (P = 0.015) and M6 (P = 0.001), but elevated FACIT-Sp score at M1 (P = 0.042), M3 (P < 0.001), and M6 (P < 0.001) compared to CC. Noteworthily, RT facilitated the improvements of HADS-A (P < 0.001), HADS-D (P = 0.010), and FACIT-Sp (P < 0.001) scores from M0 to M6 versus CC.

CONCLUSIONS

RT relieves anxiety, depression and boosts spiritual well-being in both stroke patients and their spouse caregivers.

The effect of psychological resilience and spiritual well-being on the experience of hope in parents of children with cancer

PURPOSE

Hope in pediatric oncology guides parents as an inner guidance compass through their child's challenging journey toward cancer treatment. This study was designed to examine the effects of psychological resilience, spiritual well-being, and some child- and parent-related factors on parents' experience of hope while their child is undergoing cancer treatment.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted between March and July 2022 in the pediatric oncology-hematology ward of a university hospital in Turkey. Parents of 120 children with cancer were included in the study. Data were collected using the child and parent questionnaire, Herth Hope Index, Connor-Davidson Resilience Short Form, and Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. In addition, the content analysis method was used to analyze the open-ended structured questions. Ethical approval was obtained for the study.

RESULTS

In the study, 57.5% of the parents who participated were mothers. The mean age of the children was 9.46 ± 5.00 years. 30.8% of the children were diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and the mean duration of treatment was 20.42 ± 13.75 months. According to multiple linear regression analysis, child gender (β = -0.16), number of children (β = -0.16), cancer diagnosis (β = -0.24), resilience (β =0.31), and parental spiritual well-being (β =0.40) were the determinant factors affecting parents' experiences of hope. All these predictors explained 55% of the change in parents' hope levels. In addition, two main themes (increasing and decreasing factors) were identified regarding parents' experiences of hope.

CONCLUSIONS

Insights from this study have the potential to shape interventions specifically designed to maintain parents' hope throughout their child's cancer treatment journey.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

This study may provide insights for the design of intervention programs in pediatric oncology hematology wards aimed at strengthening the hope and improving coping mechanisms of parents with children coping with cancer.

Effects of a Spiritual Care Program on Body Image and Resilience in Patients with Second-Degree Burns in Iran

This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of a spiritual care program (SCP), on the body image and resilience of second-degree burn patients in Iran. In this semi-experimental study, 60 patients with second-degree burns were selected in the Tehran Mottahari Burns Hospital, Iran in 2022. These patients were divided through random allocation into two intervention and control groups. The patients of both groups filled out Beck's self-esteem Test (BSCT) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) before, immediately, and 3 months after the intervention. In the intervention group, SCP was performed for eight sessions over two weeks. Firstly, the 4D Model of Spiritual Health and Well-Being was examined, then two one-hour sessions were held with each patient about each dimension, with a total of four dimensions including eight sessions, in which these dimensions were examined and discussed. There was no difference in the score of body image (P = 0.326) and resilience (P = 0.597) before intervention in the control and intervention groups. However, the mean of body image score in the intervention group immediately (109.56 ± 4.86) and 3 months after (109.16 ± 6.06) the intervention was significant, respectively. Also, the mean of resilience score in the intervention group was significant immediately (85.86 ± 6.78) and 3 months after the intervention (85.73 ± 6.27). It is suggested for healthcare providers to use the SCPs to reduce the recovery time of burned patients and reduce complications and treatment costs.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well-Being and Post-Traumatic Growth in Turkish Patients Undergoing Solid Organ Transplantation

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being and post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 366 patients who presented to the organ transplantation polyclinic of a university hospital between September 2021 and February 2022 in Turkey. The mean Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory and Spiritual Well-Being Scale scores of solid organ transplant patients were 81.33 ± 20.28 and 37.18 ± 8.69, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between post-traumatic growth and spiritual well-being. According to linear regression analysis, spiritual well-being, gender, marital status, transplanted organ, donor type, and previous mental disorders were statistically significant predictive factors that affected post-traumatic growth. Spiritual well-being was an important variable that affected post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. Therefore, healthcare providers can provide individualized psychosocial-spiritual care and counseling services that increase post-traumatic growth in patients after organ transplantation.

A Descriptive Study of Spiritual Well-Being and Foot Care Practices Administered to Turkish Patients Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes

The aim of the study is the determination of factors affecting the moral well-being of individuals with type 2 diabetes, their foot care behaviors, and the relationship between their spiritual well-being and foot care behaviors. This is a descriptive and relationship-seeking study. The population of the study was comprised of patients with type 2 diabetes who continued their treatment in the same hospital. The sample group consisted of 157 people determined by power analysis (0.05 margin of error, 0.85 power, and 0.447 effect size). For data collection, the Participant Information Form, Spiritual Well-being Scale, and the Foot Care Behavior Scale were used. The mean age of the participants was 59.50 ± 4.858, the body cure index was 29.97 ± 4.233, the foot care awareness score was 51.04 ± 9.884, and the spiritual well-being score was 19.44 ± 7.423. The spiritual well-being subdimension scores were as follows: meaning: 5.17 ± 3.226, belief: 9.79 ± 4.277, and peace and tranquility: 4.48 ± 2.608. Foot care awareness and spiritual well-being scores of the patients were moderate. Individuals' awareness of foot care is affected by their willingness to use medication and to receive education about diabetes; while the income level affects their moral well-being. There is a weak and positive relationship between the two scale scores. It would be appropriate to address the patients spiritually and to provide care with an integrated understanding of care. The adoption of foot care by nurses will make nursing more visible and will be effective for the protection of public health.

Spiritual Well-Being and Psychological Well-Being Among Hemodialysis Patients in Turkey: A Descriptive and Correlational Study

This study aimed to determine the psychological and spiritual well-being of hemodialysis patients in Turkey. This descriptive and correlational study included 86 hemodialysis patients. Data were collected using the Spiritual Well-Being Scale and Psychological Well-Being Scale. There was a positive correlation between spiritual and psychological well-being (r = 0.315, p = 0.003). Psychological well-being and age explained 39% of total variance (F = 7.593, p = 0.001). In conclusion, there should be provided individualized spiritual care and counseling to improve the psychological well-being of hemodialysis patients.

Spiritual Well-being, Diabetes Burden, Self-management, and Glycemic Control Among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes in Turkey: A Descriptive and Correlational Study

Spiritual well-being is considered a significant factor in helping to manage chronic diseases and cope with the disease process. This descriptive-correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship between spiritual well-being, diabetes burden, self-management, and among 300 outpatients with type 2 diabetes in Turkey. A significant relationship was found between the diabetes burden and self-management levels and the spiritual well-being of patients with diabetes (p < 0.005). Multiple linear regression analyses found that a high diabetes burden (ß = -0.106) decreased well-being, and high self-management increased well-being (ß = 0.415). Additionally, the results revealed that marital status, household members, performing daily life activities alone, hospitalization due to complications, diabetes burden, self-management, glycemic control, and blood lipid parameters explained 29% of the total variance in the spiritual well-being level. Accordingly, the present study recommended that health professionals should consider spiritual well-being to support disease management with a holistic approach to diabetes patients.

Effects of Music Therapy on Spiritual Well-Being among Patients with Advanced Cancer in Palliative Care: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

PURPOSE

Patients with advanced cancer in palliative care often experience physical and psychological symptoms that negatively impact their quality of life (QoL) and spiritual well-being. Music therapy can be used for symptom management in these patients. However, the effectiveness is uncertain. To determine the effectiveness of music therapy on spiritual well-being, QoL, pain, and psychological distress using randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

DATA SOURCE

A systematic search was conducted in EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the ClinicalTrial.gov registry up to September 2022.

CONCLUSION

The meta-analysis included seven RCTs with a total of 747 advanced cancer patients. Music therapy was found to significantly improve spiritual well-being with a mean difference of 0.43 (95% CI: 0.25 to 0.61, P < .001) in the intervention group compared to the control group. However, no significant group differences were found between the intervention and control groups for QoL (SMD: 0.53, 95% CI: -0.12 to 1.13, P = .11), pain (MD: -0.81, 95% CI: -2.06 to 0.44, P = .20), and psychological distress (SMD: -0.05, 95% CI: -0.41 to 0.32, P = .81). Music therapy can effectively improve the spiritual well-being of palliative care patients. However, its beneficial effects on QoL, pain, and psychological distress were minimal.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Music therapy interventions can be introduced to help patients deal with spiritual/existential needs. Future studies should identify optimal characteristics of music therapy interventions to aid in enhancing the quality of palliative care for patients with advanced cancer.

Status and influential factors of spiritual well-being in cancer patients with drug clinical trials: a cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spiritual well-being status of cancer patients in drug clinical trials and its influencing factors, and to provide theoretical support for the spiritual health intervention of clinical trial cancer patients.

METHODS

This cross-section study was conducted among 244 cancer patients in clinical trials. The Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale Short Form (MSAS-SF), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC 10), and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual (FACIT-SP-12) were used to measure symptom burden, psychological resilience, and spiritual well-being. The Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the influencing factors of patients' spiritual health.

RESULTS

The overall spiritual health level of cancer patients with clinical trials was high (36.87 ± 11.0), and the spiritual health level was positively correlated with psychological resilience (r = 0.872, P < 0.001). Religious belief, nationality, treatment regimen, and resilience were independent risk factors for the spiritual health of cancer patients in clinical trials. Patients with religious beliefs (β = 0.097, P = 0.012), ethnic minorities (β = 0.087, P = 0.023), and high resilience scores (β = 0.874, P < 0.001) had higher levels of spiritual health. Patients who received single antineoplastic therapy (β =  - 0.079, P = 0.028) had lower levels of spiritual health.

CONCLUSION

Our study found that the spiritual health of cancer patients in clinical trials was at a high level, superior to cancer patients receiving conventional anti-tumor therapy. Religious belief, nationality, treatment regimen, and psychological resilience were the influential factors of spiritual health.

Spiritual well-being among patients newly diagnosed with cancer in Jordan: thematic analysis

PURPOSE

Patients newly diagnosed with cancer experience a grief process that disturbs their spiritual well-being. The purpose of this study was to explore the spiritual well-being among patients with cancer within the first 3 months of diagnosis.

METHODS

The study used a qualitative approach using thematic analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with sixteen participants diagnosed with cancer within the first 3 months prior to data collection using a purposive sampling method. The interviews took place in oncology outpatient clinics at three selected hospitals in Jordan.

RESULTS

Four main themes emerged from the texts of the participants' stories. These themes were "Hopeful yet uncertain expectation of achieving future goals," "A wake-up call for self-transcendence," "Religious struggle," and "Facing Reality provoke questions about meaning of life."

CONCLUSION

To conclude, analysis of texts from the Jordanian patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer has revealed rich and meaningful evidence of the effect of this diagnosis on disturbing patients' beliefs and meaning of life. Those patients may experience uncertainty; however, they become more connected with others and God. Health care providers need to understand patients' sources of hope and adjustment that may influence management goals before and during starting treatment.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale Among Iranian Potential Organ Donors

The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) is a widely used scale that requires evaluation for the Iranian population. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the SWBS among a sample of potential Iranian organ donors. The research was conducted in 2022 in Iran using cross-sectional methodological design. The sample consisted of 316 individuals from the Iranian community who expressed willingness to donate organs. Convenience sampling was used to select the participants. The construct validity and reliability of the Persian version of the SWBS were assessed. The results from maximum likelihood (ML) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed three factors labeled as higher power, the meaning of life, and the purpose of life, which explained 50.2% of the total variance in the concept of Spiritual Well-Being (SWB). The results indicated that the model was appropriate. Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega demonstrated an acceptable internal consistency of the scale. All the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 27 and AMOS 27 software. These findings suggest that the Persian version of the SWBS is a reliable and valid scale for assessing the spiritual well-being of individuals who are willing to donate organs. The scale comprises 16 items related to higher power, meaning of life, and sense of life.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well-Being, Life Satisfaction and Hope in Elderly Individuals in Turkey

Life satisfaction and hope are important features in elderly individuals. Spiritual well-being is thought to affect life satisfaction and hope in the elderly. This study was conducted to determine the association between spiritual well-being and life satisfaction and hope in elderly persons. This study followed a cross-sectional design. The sample size of the study was 1383 individuals aged 65 or older. The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (FACIT-Sp), Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Hope Scale were administered to participants. Results indicated that spiritual well-being was significantly associated with life satisfaction and hope (p < 0.05). A limitation of this finding is the possible contamination of the measure of spiritual well-being with indicators of meaning and peace that could explain the relationship between spiritual well-being and hope. The spiritual well-being scale used in this research included indicators of meaning and peace that could explain the relationship between spiritual well-being and hope.

Validation of the Transpersonal Gratitude Scale (TGS) and the Relationship between Transpersonal Gratitude, Spiritual Well-Being and Distress in India

This study explores the psychometric properties of the transpersonal gratitude scale (TGS) in the Indian context. It also examines the relationship between transpersonal gratitude, spiritual well-being, and distress. The psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the TGS were evaluated with the help of two studies. In the first study, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) reported a four-factor solution. These four factors- expression of gratitude, value of gratitude, transcendent gratitude, and spiritual connection- explained 74.1% of the total variance. Further, CFA results indicated an excellent model fit of four-factor structure derived from EFA. These findings recommended appropriate factorial validity of TGS in the Indian context. In the second study, Cronbach's alpha and composite reliability values recommended reliability of TGS among Indians. Also, the average variance explained (AVE) values and the Fornell-Larcker test concluded convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. In addition, positive correlations were reported between TGS, GRAT-16 (gratitude resentment and appreciation scale), and spiritual well-being scale scores. Also, a negative linkage was reported between TGS and distress score. These associations established criterion validity of the scale. Overall, the scale reported acceptable psychometric properties in the Indian context.

Examining the Psychological and Spiritual Well-Being of Older Adult Individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis in Turkey

This study examined the psychological well-being (PWB) and spiritual well-being (SWB) of older adult individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who experienced the difficulties of both aging and RA. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in two centers located in the capital city of Turkey. A total of 136 individuals with a diagnosis of RA who met the inclusion criteria constituted the sample group of the study. Participant Information Form, SWB, and PWB Scales were used for data collection. The results showed that participants' PWB score was positively and significantly difference with marital status, presence of children, and regular participation in social activities. It was concluded that pain severity was not significantly difference with PWB and SWB. However, there was a significant negative correlation between PWB score and total SWB score and its two sub-dimensions, transcendence and anomie. Results emphasize the necessity of supportive interventions to increase psychological and spiritual well-being of older adult individuals with RA.

Relationship Between the Psychological Distress and Spiritual Well-Being in Pregnant Women Exposed to Domestic Violence: A Cross-Sectional Study in Iran

Maternal psychological distress is often associated with domestic violence. Spiritual well-being can affect the psychological capacity to deal with distress. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological distress and spiritual well-being in pregnant women exposed to domestic violence. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 305 pregnant women subjected to domestic violence in southern Iran. The participants were selected using the census method. Data were collected using the Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWB), the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), and the Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream (HITS) screening tool (short form) and were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics (t-test, ANOVA, the Spearman correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression) in SPSS software version 24. The mean scores ± standard deviation of the participants' psychological distress, spiritual well-being, and domestic violence were 24.68 ± 6.43, 79.89 ± 18.98, and 11.24 ± 1.5, respectively. The results showed that psychological distress had a significant negative correlation with spiritual well-being (ρ = - 0.84, P < 0.001) and domestic violence (ρ = - 0.73, P < 0.001). The results of the multiple linear regression analysis also showed that spiritual well-being and domestic violence could predict the psychological distress of pregnant women who were exposed to domestic violence, which explained 73% of the psychological distress in the participants. According to the study results, spiritually oriented education can be provided for women to reduce their psychological distress. Also, it is recommended that necessary interventions be used to reduce domestic violence and empower women to prevent it.

Effects of Mindfulness-Based Elder Care (MBEC) on symptoms of depression and anxiety and spiritual well-being of institutionalized seniors with disabilities: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Despite the need to incorporate seniors from various settings into mindfulness-based empirical research, issues of geriatric frailties and non-compliance remain. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a mindfulness-based elder care (MBEC) program on mental health and spiritual well-being among seniors with disabilities in long-term care residential settings.

METHODS

This single-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) randomly assigned seventy-seven participants into an MBEC group or control group of an eight-week MBEC program. Participants were assessed every four weeks at baseline (T0), mid-intervention (T1), post-intervention (T2) and follow-up (T3) using the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), respectively.

RESULTS

Linear mixed model (LMM) showed that MBEC participants' mental health improved significantly after completing the intervention; compared with controls, the MBEC group exhibited significantly lower anxiety (state-anxiety at T2; trait-anxiety at T2 and T3) and fewer depressive symptoms. Spiritual well-being was also significantly enhanced compared to that in the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

MBEC has positive effects on both mental health and spiritual well-being outcomes among seniors with disabilities. In long-term care facilities, seniors with abilities have the potential to adhere to and engage in activities of a mindfulness-based intervention. This low risk, easily accessible, and effective 8-week program is recommended to be integrated into regular long-term care institutional routines.

Spiritually Well, Mentally Well? Examining the Early Life Religious Antecedents of the Impact of Spiritual Well-Being on Mental Health Among United Methodist Clergy in North Carolina

Research has consistently shown that the seeds of religiosity are planted and begin to take form during early life socialization, but little attention have been given to these dynamics among clergy members. In this study, we consider whether early life religious exposure may amplify the beneficial effects of spiritual well-being (having a "thriving" spiritual life) for mental health and burnout for clergy. Drawing from a life course perspective, we use longitudinal data from the Clergy Health Initiative, which sampled United Methodist Clergy in North Carolina (n = 1330). Key results suggest that higher frequencies of childhood religious attendance were consistently associated with lower depressive symptoms and burnout. The beneficial associations between spiritual well-being and lower depressive symptoms and burnout were also stronger for clergy with greater church attendance in childhood. The accumulation of "religious capital" for clergy who were raised in religious households with regular service attendance appear to accentuate the positive effects of spiritual well-being, which encompass a greater sense of closeness to God in their own lives and in ministry. This study identifies the importance of researchers taking a "longer" view of the religious and spiritual lives of clergy.

The effect of physical and psychological symptoms on spiritual well-being and emotional distress in inpatient cancer patients

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to examine the effects of physical and psychological symptoms seen in inpatient cancer patients on spiritual well-being and emotional distress.

METHOD

This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 98 cancer patients treated in oncology, haematology, and stem cell services at a university hospital between April and June 2022. Socio-demographic characteristic form, Karnofsky performance scale, Nightingale Symptom Assessment Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, distress thermometer and spiritual well-being scale were used to collect data. Statistical analyses were made by taking the descriptive features of the data.

RESULTS

It was determined that 55.1% of the patients were diagnosed with cancer for more than one year, 53.1% receiving treatment for more than one year, 61.2% were diagnosed with haematological cancer, and 62.2% were treated only with chemotherapy. Cancer type (p<0.01), treatment (p<0.05) and Karnofsky scores (p<0.01) had an effect on the spiritual well-being and distress scores. It was determined that 39.8% of the patients were in the yellow zone of the distress thermometer, could not manage their stress well and needed psychological support. As the psychological symptoms of the patients increased, their spiritual well-being declined (r=-0.447, p<0.01), and as their physical (r=0.222, p<0.05) and psychological (r=0.311, p<0.01) symptoms increased, their distress scores increased.

CONCLUSION

It is anticipated that identifying the problems that patients have and making interventions to solve those problems by oncology nurses would significantly contribute to the patient's spiritual well-being and emotional distress.

Does coping with pain help the elderly with cardiovascular disease? The association of sense of coherence, spiritual well-being and self-compassion with quality of life through the mediating role of pain self-efficacy

BACKGROUND

Population ageing is considered one of the biggest challenges facing the world, and the status of the elderly in society and their quality of life (QOL) have proved to be a concern in professional and scientific research circles. As a result, the current study sought to investigate the role of pain self-efficacy (PSE) as a moderator in the relationship between sense of coherence (SOC), spiritual well-being, and self-compassion with QOL in Iranian elderly with cardiovascular disease (CVD).

METHOD

This was a correlational study of the path analysis type. The statistical population included all elderly people with CVD who were at least 60 years of age in Kermanshah Province, Iran, in 2022, of whom 298 (181 men and 117 women) were selected using convenience sampling and according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The participants answered questionnaires from the World Health Organization on QOL, Paloutzian and Ellison's spiritual well-being, Nicholas's PSE, Antonovsky's SOC, and Raes et al.'s self-compassion.

RESULTS

The results of path analysis demonstrated that the hypothesized model of this study has a good fit in the studied sample. There were significant paths between SOC (β = 0.39), spiritual well-being (β = 0.13) and self-compassion (β = 0.44) with PSE. Although there were significant paths between SOC (β = 0.16) and self-compassion (β = 0.31) with QOL, there was no significant path between spiritual well-being and QOL (β = 0.06). Besides, there was a significant path between PSE and QOL (β = 0.35). Finally, PSE was found to mediate the relationship of SOC, spiritual well-being and self-compassion with QOL.

CONCLUSION

The results may provide psychotherapists and counselors working in this field of inquiry with advantageous information to choose or create a useful therapeutic method to work with the elderly with CVD. Meanwhile, other researchers are suggested to examine other variables which may serve a mediating role in the mentioned model.

A comparative study of religious beliefs, spiritual intelligence and spiritual well-being in two therapies based on education (anonymous drug user) and methadone in drug user in Iran

OBJECTIVE

Prevention of high-risk behaviors has always been considered; According to the researches, a person's religious attitudes and beliefs and intelligence quotient are associated with the prevention of high-risk behaviors such as drug addiction, and religiosity and spirituality also reduce drug addiction; Therefore, this study was conducted to compare religious beliefs, intelligence and spiritual health in two methods of education-based treatment and methadone in people with addiction.

RESULTS

A comparative study was performed among 184 people on all drug users admitted to these wards that treated with methadone and participants of meetings of anonymous drug users. Four questionnaires were used to collect information. Mean, and standard deviation were used to describe the demographic characteristics of participants. Chi-square and fisher tests were used to compare demographic information in the two groups. The present study was performed following acquisition of the code of ethics (IR.BUMS.REC.1395.156) from Research Ethics Committee of Birjand University of Medical Sciences.

Spiritual Well-Being and Care Burden in Caregivers of Patients with Breast Cancer in Turkey

This research was carried out to identify the relationship between the spiritual well-being and caregiver burden in caregivers of patients with breast cancer. The study was conducted with family caregivers of patients with breast cancer who presented to the oncology clinic of a university hospital for treatment. The study sample included a total of 138 family caregivers who met the criteria for participation and agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected using a participant information form, caregiver burden scale and three-dimensional spiritual well-being scale. The caregivers have a moderate level of caregiver burden and their spiritual well-being was quite high. The caregiver burden of female caregivers was found to be significantly higher than that of male caregivers (p = 0.040). There is a negatively significant relationship between caregiver burden and spiritual well-being (p = 0.000, r =  - 0.357). The caregiver burden is significantly higher among the 24-h caregivers compared to that among the 3-h and 4-6-h caregivers (p = 0.003). The spiritual well-being of the caregivers who provide care between 3 h and 4-6 h a day was significantly higher than that of those who provide 24-h care (p = 0.001). Increasing spiritual well-being may help to reduce caregiver burden in caregivers of those with breast cancer.

The effects of spiritual care intervention on spiritual well-being, loneliness, hope and life satisfaction of intensive care unit patients

BACKGROUND

The intensive care unit is a place where patients try to cope with pain and question the meaning and purpose of life and spiritual needs emerge.

OBJECTIVE

The present study was conducted to examine the effects of spiritual care interventions on the spiritual well-being, loneliness, hope, and life satisfaction of patients treated in intensive care.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study was conducted in an intensive care unit as an interventional study with a randomized pre-test, post-test, and control group between September and December 2021. A total of 64 patients, 32 in the intervention group and 32 in the control group, were included in the sample. The patients in the intervention group received eight sessions (twice a week) of spiritual nursing interventions according to the Traditions-Reconciliation-Understandings-Searching-Teachers model in the intensive care unit, while the control group received routine nursing care.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 63.53 ± 4.10 years in the intervention group and 63.37 ± 3.18 years in the control group. Most of the participants in both the intervention (59.4 %) and control (68.7 %) groups were female. Following the intervention, the findings showed that the intervention had positive effects on patients' spiritual well-being (t = -10.382), loneliness (t = 13.635), hope (t = -10.440), and life satisfaction (t = -10.480) levels (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

It was found that the spiritual care provided in the intensive care unit positively affected patients' spiritual well-being, hope, loneliness, and life satisfaction levels. It can be recommended that nurses working in intensive care develop a spiritually supportive environment by addressing the spiritual issues of patients and their relatives and using existing spiritual care services.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Intensive care nurses should provide an environment and nursing care that meet their patients' spiritual needs. Spiritual care can be given to improve spiritual well-being, hope, and life satisfaction levels and to alleviate loneliness in intensive care patients.

The effect of spiritual well-being on compassion fatigue among intensive care nurses: A descriptive study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to determine the effect of spiritual well-being of intensive care nurses on compassion fatigue.

METHODS

It is a descriptive study. The sample of the study was composed of 167 nurses who were working in the intensive care units of the hospitals in Turkey. Data were collected by using "Personal Information Form", "The Spiritual Well-Being Scale" and "The Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale" between July and October 2022. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation, and simple regression analysis were used to analyse data.

FINDINGS

35% (n = 59) of the participants were between 22 and 27 years old; 73% (n = 122) were females; 67% (n = 112) had an undergraduate degree; 57% (n = 96) had an experience of 1 to 5 years in the intensive care. It was determined that intensive care nurses had a moderate level of compassion fatigue and a high level of spiritual well-being. Although especially the educational levels of the nurses contributed to their level of spiritual well-being, a younger age and being single and less experienced in the nursing profession and intensive care were identified as significant factors in determining compassion fatigue. Nurses' Spiritual Well-Being Scale mean score was 113.89 ± 15.50. The mean score of the Compassion Fatigue Scale was 60.15 ± 29.24. A positive correlation was found between the Spiritual Well-Being and the Compassion Fatigue Scales (ß = 0.358, p = 0.000).

CONCLUSIONS

Although intensive care nurses have a high level of spiritual well-being in general, they experience a moderate level of compassion fatigue. Younger and less experienced nurses should get more attention in intensive care units against compassion fatigue.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Management of feelings of compassion can be a protective factor for compassion fatigue and can be used as a prevention strategy in the context of improving mental well-being among intensive care nurses. Awareness and knowledge of nurses on spiritual needs should be enhanced.

Association of pain management and positive expectations with psychological distress and spiritual well‑being among terminally ill cancer patients admitted to a palliative care unit

BACKGROUND

Although palliation of psycho-spiritual distress is of great importance in terminally ill cancer patients, there is a little information about screening patients who benefit from palliative care and identifying the cancer care targets. This study explored the relationship of pain management and positive expectations with depression, anxiety and spiritual well-being (SWB) in terminal cancer patients admitted to a palliative care unit.

METHODS

Eighty-four terminal cancer inpatients were recruited from the Hospice Ward, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University. Optimism and general self-efficacy (GSE) were evaluated at admission. Patients completed self-report questionnaires on SWB, depression, anxiety and pain both on admission and one week later. The repeated designed analysis of variance was used to explore the correlates of depression, anxiety and SWB (meaning, peace, faith).

RESULTS

In our sample, only cancer pain diminished significantly one week later. For depression (p = 0.041) and faith (p = 0.013), there was a significant pain group (relieved vs. not relieved) × time interaction effect, such that those with satisfied pain control experienced the improved psycho-spiritual outcomes at 1 week. The relationship between positive expectations, peace and faith was also statistically significant, indicating that the improvement of peace or faith was significant in the low group of optimism and GSE.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicated that pain management lied at the center of depression and SWB, meaning that effective pain management may reduce depression, and improve SWB among terminal cancer patients. Moreover, positive expectations, especially for optimism, may be the new target for SWB-related intervention research. Palliative care nurse should require the identification of terminal cancer patients who may more benefit from short-term palliative care, and target them with effective cancer care.

The relationship between meaning of life, perceived social support, spiritual well-being and pain catastrophizing with quality of life in migraine patients: the mediating role of pain self-efficacy

BACKGROUND

Migraine is a neurological disease that has several physical and psychological complications, which is characterized by disability and impaired quality of life.

AIMS

The aim of this study was to explore the mediating role of pain self-efficacy in the relationship between meaning of life, perceived social support, spiritual well-being and pain catastrophizing with quality of life in migraine sufferers. The relationship between these factors with quality of life (QOL) was not fully explored in migraine patients.

METHOD

This study was a correlational study of structural equations. Therefore, 300 patients with migraine who referred to one of the specialized neurological treatment centers in Zanjan in 2021 were recruited based on the inclusion criteria. Patients also completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF), Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. Finally, the hypotheses were then analyzed with correlation coefficient and path analysis method by using SPSS-26 and LISREL-10.2 programs.

RESULTS

The results of the present study showed that pain self-efficacy has a mediating role in the relationship between meaning of life and quality of life (B = 0.015), perceived social support with quality of life (B = 0.022), spiritual well-being with quality of life (B = 0.021), as well as pain catastrophizing with quality of life (B = - 0.015).

CONCLUSION

According to the results of this study, by considering the role of self-efficacy of pain, it is possible to develop the programs to strengthen and improve the meaning of life, perceived social support, spiritual well-being and also reduce pain catastrophizing, in order to improve the quality of life of patients with migraine.

The Effects of the Spiritual Well-Being Levels of Surgical Nurses on Care Satisfaction in Liver Transplant Recipients After Transplantation: The Case of a Turkish Sample

This study examined the effects of the spiritual well-being levels of surgical nurses on care satisfaction in liver transplant recipients after transplantation. The sample in this cross-sectional study consisted of 69 surgical nurses working in the organ transplant centre of a research and training hospital in Turkey and 79 liver transplant recipients. The data of this study were collected between 1 August 2020 and 30 August 2021. The "Three-Factor Spiritual Well-being Scale" and the "Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale" were used for data collection. A statistically significant relationship was found between the spiritual well-being levels of the surgical nurses and the care satisfaction levels of the transplant recipients. Surgical nurses should be capable of treating patients holistically and be knowledgeable enough to support the mental health of patients. High levels of spiritual well-being in surgical nurses contribute to increased satisfaction with care among organ transplant recipients.

The effect of spiritual well-being on illness perception of lung cancer patıents

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of spiritual well-being on the perception of people who have lung cancer. The study was conducted with 100 volunteered patients with living lung cancer who were monitored and treated at a university hospital in Turkey. Patient Identification Form, Spiritual Well-Being Scale and Illness Perception Scale were used for the data collection procedure. Using SPSS 21.0 program, independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA test were performed in statistical analyses. The probability value was considered significant as p < 0.05. The mean score of Spiritual Well Being (SWB) was found 28.48 ± 7.20. The findings were as follows: (1) the patients who stated that they comply with the drug treatment had a high score, and SWB scores were found to be lower in those who thought that the disease could not be cured. (2) there was a significant positive relationship among SWB and sub-dimensions of the illness perceptions; acute-chronic duration (p = .668), personal control (p = .811), treatment control (p = .682), emotional representation (p = 0.184) 3), as the SWB mean score increases, the scores in the illness perception section increase 4; however, when the SWB score increases, the cyclic time decreases. It was concluded that the spiritual well-being of people who have lung cancer positively affects the perception of the disease. It was further suggested that spiritual well-being should be evaluated and improved within holistic care in order to ensure patients perception of disease and compliance with treatment.

How Does Spiritual Well-Being Change Over Time Among US Patients with Heart Failure and What Predicts Change?

Few studies have examined how spiritual well-being changes over time in patients with heart failure. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Collaborative Care to Alleviate Symptoms and Adjust to Illness (CASA) trial (N = 314). Spiritual well-being was measured using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being Scale (FACIT-Sp) at baseline and 12-month follow-up. Of the 165 patients with spiritual well-being data at follow-up, 65 (39%) experienced probable clinically meaningful changes (> 0.5 SD) in spiritual well-being (35 improved, 30 declined). Increased pain (p = 0.04), decreased dyspnea (p < 0.01), and increased life completion (p = 0.02) were associated with improvement in overall spiritual well-being. Exploratory analyses found different predictors for FACIT-Sp subscales.

The mediating role of psychological capital in relations between spiritual well-being and mental health among nursing students

BACKGROUND

Nursing students face mental and emotional issues due to the nature of their profession. The role of protective factors such as psychological capital and spiritual well-being is vital in improving mental health. This study investigated the mediating role of psychological capital as a mediator in the relationships between spiritual well-being and mental health in Iran.

METHODS

The present study was descriptive, cross-sectional research conducted on 426 undergraduate nursing students within a four-year educational program in Iran from July to December 2021. The participants were selected via convenience sampling. This research used psychological capital scale, spiritual well-being, and general health questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive tests, Pearson correlation, and a structural equation model.

RESULTS

Spiritual well-being positively affects mental health and psychological capital. Psychological capital also is positively related to mental health. Psychological capital partially mediated the effect of spiritual well-being on mental health.

CONCLUSION

According to the results, High level of spiritual well-being can improve nursing students' mental health and the relationship is partially mediated Psychological capital. Therefore, psychological capital is an important factor in improving nursing students' mental health.

The Effect of Spiritual Well-being on Hope in Immobile Patients Suffering From Paralysis Due to Spinal Cord Injuries

This study aimed to determine the effect of spiritual well-being on hope in immobile patients suffering from paralysis due to spinal cord injuries. The sample size of this cross-sectional study was determined to be 100 immobile patients suffering from paralysis due to spinal cord injuries via power analysis. "Descriptive Characteristics Form," "Spiritual Well-being Scale," and "Dispositional Hope Scales" were used to collect the data. It was determined that participants' spiritual well-being scores were 22.25 ± 9.62 and their hope scores were 29.53 ± 9.83. There was a weak but positive correlation between the total scores on the hope scale and the spiritual well-being scale (p = 0.001, r = 0.477). Among immobile patients suffering from paralysis due to spinal cord injury, spiritual well-being levels accounted for 22% of the variance in hope levels (p = 0.001, R² = 0.22). This study showed that as patients' spiritual well-being levels increased, their hope levels also increased.

An Investigation of Pain Beliefs, Pain Coping, and Spiritual Well-Being in Surgical Patients

This study investigated pain beliefs, pain coping, and spiritual well-being in surgical patients. The study adopted a cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational research design. The sample consisted of 213 voluntary patients admitted to a surgery clinic between April and November 2019. Data were collected using a demographic characteristics questionnaire, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being Scale-12 item (FACIT-Sp-12), the Pain Beliefs Questionnaire (PBQ), and the Pain Coping Questionnaire (PCQ). Number, percentage, mean, and Spearman's correlation were used for analysis. Participants had a total FACIT-Sp-12 score of 25.99 ± 8.43. They had a mean PBQ "organic beliefs" and "psychological beliefs" subscale score of 4.44 ± 0.64 and 4.96 ± 0.68, respectively. They had a mean PCQ "self-management," "helplessness," "conscious coping attempts," and "medical remedies" subscale score of 15.83 ± 6.15, 9.41 ± 4.63, 8.72 ± 3.66, and 7.46 ± 5.33, respectively. Spiritual well-being was weakly and positively (r = 0.445, p < 0.000) correlated with self-management and moderately and negatively correlated (r = - 0.528, p < 0.000) with helplessness. Participants with higher organic and psychological beliefs had lower spiritual well-being. The results indicate that nurses should evaluate both pain and spiritual well-being in patients.

Spiritual Well-being in Patients with Chronic Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

As a significant health challenge, chronic disease can have critical spiritual consequences for patients. Therefore, the study of spiritual well-being as an aspect of health is essential but has been less considered with regard to chronic diseases. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate spiritual well-being in patients with chronic diseases. For this purpose, in the initial search that was performed of valid databases, a total of 615 descriptive studies published between 2000 and 2018 were found. After carefully assessing these, only 24 studies were included in the review. Overall, the spiritual well-being of 3289 patients with chronic disease was investigated. This study showed that the total mean score of the spiritual well-being of patients with chronic diseases was 86.65 (P < 0.001, 95%, CI: 80.34-92.96), indicating a moderate level of spiritual well-being in these patients. Thus, patients with chronic diseases are recommended to consider spiritual consultation programs.

Spiritual needs, spiritual well-being, and Buddhist practices of patients with terminal illness, Thailand

OBJECTIVES

The purposes of this study were to describe and compare the spiritual needs and spiritual well-being among terminally ill patients receiving care in different palliative care settings and to investigate the differences in spiritual well-being in relation to the level of Buddhist practices.

METHODS

A cross-sectional multicenter study was carried out that included community/home-based care (Home), a faith-based organization for patients with AIDS (FB_AIDS), a faith-based organization for patients with cancer (FB_CA), and a hospice ward (Hospice). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the participants' demographics, Buddhist practices, spiritual needs, and spiritual well-being. The analysis was performed using analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare the spiritual needs and the spiritual well-being in the different settings. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to investigate the differences in spiritual well-being in relation to the level of Buddhist practices.

RESULTS

A total of 170 patients with a terminal illness (30 Home, 33 FB_AIDS, 64 FB_CA, and 43 Hospice) participated. Patients with a terminal illness receiving care at the FB_CA and Home had significantly higher mean scores for spiritual needs than those in the other settings. Patients with a terminal illness receiving care at the FB_CA had a significantly higher mean score for spiritual well-being than those receiving care in the other settings. Participants having a higher frequency of Buddhist practice had significantly higher mean scores for spiritual well-being.

SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS

Spiritual needs and spiritual well-being differed significantly among participants in different palliative care settings. The more the patients engaged in Buddhist practices, the higher their scores were for spiritual well-being. Thus, religious-based strategies should be integrated into palliative care and should be more emphasized.

Spiritual care perceptions and empathy of Chinese nursing students: The mediating roles of spiritual well-being

OBJECTIVE

To investigate spiritual care perceptions, spiritual well-being, and empathy, examine the correlations among spiritual care perceptions, spiritual well-being, and empathy, and explore the mediating role of spiritual well-being between other two variables of Chinese nursing students.

METHODS

A cross-sectional design was implemented, and the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Checklist was used to ensure quality reporting of the study. A cluster sample of 2,718 nursing students was selected from 7 universities and colleges in China. The demographic characteristics questionnaire, the Chinese Version of the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale (C-SCGS), the Spiritual Health Scale Short Form (SHS-SF), and the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Nursing Student (JSPE-NS) were used. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and process plug-in mediation effect analyses were used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The total score of spiritual care perceptions, spiritual well-being, and empathy were 173.83 ± 25.62, 98.74 ± 12.87, and 105.04 ± 21.34, respectively. Spiritual care perceptions were positively correlated with spiritual well-being (r = 0.617, p < 0.01) and empathy (r = 0.528, p < 0.01). And spiritual well-being played a partial mediating role between the other two variables (accounting for 28.1%).

SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS

Spiritual care perceptions, spiritual well-being, and empathy were quite moderate, which need in improving. It is suggested that nursing educators pay attention to the spiritual care education of nursing students, perfect the spiritual care education system, and take targeted measures according to nursing students' individual personality traits and differences, improve their spiritual well-being and empathy in multiple ways, so as to improve their spiritual care perceptions and competence.

Is spiritual well-being related to survival time of inpatients with advanced cancer? An East Asian cohort study

OBJECTIVES

It has been suggested that psychosocial factors are related to survival time of inpatients with cancer. However, there are not many studies examining the relationship between spiritual well-being (SWB) and survival time among countries. This study investigated the relationship between SWB and survival time among three East Asian countries.

METHODS

This international multicenter cohort study is a secondary analysis involving newly admitted inpatients with advanced cancer in palliative care units in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. SWB was measured using the Integrated Palliative Outcome Scale (IPOS) at admission. We performed multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model to identify independent prognostic factors.

RESULTS

A total of 2,638 patients treated at 37 palliative care units from January 2017 to September 2018 were analyzed. The median survival time was 18.0 days (95% confidence interval [CI] 16.5-19.5) in Japan, 23.0 days (95% CI 19.9-26.1) in Korea, and 15.0 days (95% CI 13.0-17.0) in Taiwan. SWB was a significant factor correlated with survival in Taiwan (hazard ratio [HR] 1.27; 95% CI 1.01-1.59; p = 0.04), while it was insignificant in Japan (HR 1.10; 95% CI 1.00-1.22; p = 0.06), and Korea (HR 1.02; 95% CI 0.77-1.35; p = 0.89).

SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS

SWB on admission was associated with survival in patients with advanced cancer in Taiwan but not Japan or Korea. The findings suggest the possibility of a positive relationship between spiritual care and survival time in patients with far advanced cancer.

The Effect of Islamic Belief and Spiritual Well-being on Organ Donation in Turkey: A Descriptive-Relational Study

The aim of the study is to determine how Islamic belief and spiritual well-being affect the attitudes of individuals towards organ donation. The study was designed as a descriptive-relational study and included the participation of 402 adults in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. For data collection, a personal information form, the Organ Donation Attitude Scale, and the Spiritual Well-being Scale were used. A statistically significant relationship was observed between the acceptance of organ donation according to Islamic beliefs and organ donation attitude. A negative relationship was found between organ donation attitude and the scores on the anomie sub-dimension of the Spiritual Well-being Scale, while a positive relationship was found between organ donation attitude and the scores on the transcendence and harmony with nature sub-dimensions. It was concluded from the results that Islamic belief and spiritual well-being have an effect on the organ donation attitudes of individuals.

An Exploration of Spiritual Well-being Among Homeless People: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis

This study explored homeless people's (N = 164) spiritual well-being (SWB) in relation to race, mental illness, physical disease, resilience, and trait mindfulness. The results of hierarchical regression analysis revealed that variables of race (p = 0.003), mental illness (p = 0.04), resilience (p < 0.001) and trait mindfulness (p < 0.001) contributed to participants' SWB. These findings were critical to research related to homelessness and service provisions in finding that homeless people with certain backgrounds (e.g., mental illness) might have lower SWB than their counterparts. This research also revealed protective factors (e.g., resilience) that could help promote SWB.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Care Levels of Turkish Nurses with the Spiritual Well-Being of Their Patients: An Exploratory Study

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being of patients with the spiritual care levels of nurses. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between July and August 2019. The sample was composed of 63 nurses from one university hospital and 142 patients receiving care at the department of internal medicine of the hospital. For data collection, the information form and "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale" were applied to the nurses, personel information form and "FACIT Spiritual Well-Being Scale" were used for the patients. For data analysis, the descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analysis, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. The mean age of the nurses was 37.44 ± 6.95 years, and 88.9% were female. The mean age of the patients was 55.04 ± 15.86 years, and 57.7% were female. 89.4% of the patients stated that nurses provided spiritual care. A positive correlation was found between item scores on two scales (r = 0.264, p < 0.001). As the level of spirituality and spiritual care of nurses increases, the level of spiritual well-being of patients increases as well.

The effect of spiritual well-being on symptom experience in patients with cancer

PURPOSE

To explore the effect of spiritual well-being on the symptom experience of patients with cancer.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional survey that enrolled 459 patients with cancer from three large hospitals in Jordan in 2018. Participants completed questionnaires related to demographic data, spiritual well-being, and symptom experience. Additional information was obtained from the medical record review. We then conducted multiple regression to evaluate if spiritual well-being predicts the patients' reported symptom distress.

RESULTS

Patients reported thirty-six symptoms. Of which 15 have a prevalence of more than 30%. Fatigue was the most prevalent symptom (n = 282, 61.4%), followed by pain (n = 243, 52.9%) and anxiety (n = 230, 50.1%). Spiritual well-being predicted 7.1% of the total variance in patients' symptom distress (F, 19.650; p < 0.0001). Additional predictors were gender, education level, having a problem covering the treatment cost, family cancer history, and whether taking a complementary treatment or not.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with cancer experience multiple symptoms related to the disease and its treatment. Improving patients' spiritual well-being through an increased sense of meaning and peace can improve cancer symptom experience by decreasing symptom distress. In general, hospitals in Jordan focus on direct symptom management and do not look after patients' spiritual needs. Raising awareness about the importance of patients' spiritual well-being and providing appropriate spiritual assessment and interventions to patients with spiritual distress can improve patients' symptom experience.
