Resting-state activity and functional connectivity of insula and postcentral gyrus related to psychological resilience in female depressed patients: A preliminary study

BACKGROUND

Psychological resilience is a protective factor of depression. However, the neuroimaging characteristics of the relationship between psychological resilience and brain imaging in depression are not very clear. Our objectives were to explore the brain functional imaging characteristics of different levels of resilience in female patients with depression.

METHODS

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed on 58 female depressed patients. According to the resilience score, participants were divided into three groups: Low resilience (Low-res), Medium resilience (Med-res) and High resilience (High-res). We compared the differences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) among the three groups and correlated psychological resilience with ALFF and FC.

RESULTS

According to ALFF, there was a higher activation in RI and RPG in the High-res compared with Med-res and Low-res, but no significant differences between Med-res and Low-res. The FC between the RPG and supramarginal gyrus (SG) in the High-res was significantly stronger than that in the Med-res and the Low-res, and the FC of the Med-res is stronger than that of the Low-res. Both ALFF and FC were positively correlated with the score of resilience.

LIMITATIONS

The sample size of this study was relatively small and it lacked healthy controls. The results of this study could be considered preliminary.

CONCLUSIONS

Among female patients with depression, patients with higher psychological resilience had higher resting state activation in the RI and RPG and had a stronger interaction between the RPG and the SG.

Long-term mental health and resilience of the first responders in Japanese ground self-defense forces engaging body recovery after the great east Japan earthquake

Handling human remains is extremely difficult and stressful task, and it can contribute to the development of stress-related mental health problems. To prevent disaster from the development of mental disorders in first responders, it will be important to elucidate factors sustaining psychological well-being following the events requiring handling of human remains. Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) first responders (n = 146), involved in human remains recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) participated. We examined the psychological resilience (S-H Resilience Test), depressive symptoms (SDS), and psychological distress (GHQ-28) 6 years after GEJE, in three groups; Group A: no contact no view of human remains, B: view only of human remains, and C: direct handling of human remains. S-H Resilience test evaluated the 3 subclasses of resilience; Social Support, Self Efficacy, Sociality. One-way ANOVA revealed the significant difference in resilience scores between Group B and C without any differences in depressive symptoms or psychological distress among the 3 groups. Multiple regression analyses revealed that depressive symptoms and resilience were associated with psychological distress in all participants. Path analyses showed that whereas one subtype of resilience indirectly reduced psychological distress through lower depressive symptoms in Group A (Social Support) and Group B (Sociality), both subtypes of resilience indirectly reduced psychological distress by lowering depressive symptoms in Group C. These findings suggest that exposure to higher stressful situation may decrease the psychological resilience based on the S-H Resilience test, and two subtypes of resilience may be necessary to sustain the psychological well-being.

The association between physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience of teenagers: an examination of the chain mediating effect

The health of young people is crucial for the future and development of a nation. It is the collective responsibility and imperative mission of society to ensure the holistic well-being, both physically and mentally, of young individuals. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly comprehend the factors that influence their health in order to expedite the exploration of effective solutions. The objective of this study is to comprehend the mechanisms that underlie the correlation between physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience among teenagers, while also examining the mediating role played by social sensitivity and need to belong. So put forward the hypothesis: (1) physical exercise behavior can positively predict the psychological resilience. (2) Social sensitivity and need to belong plays a mediating role between physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience. (3) Social sensitivity and need to belong plays a chain mediating role between physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience. Using the cluster sampling method, a total of 1106 students (with an average age of 15.7 and a standard deviation of 0.598) who met the requirements were surveyed from Shandong Province in China. Standard scales were utilized to assess Physical Exercise Behavior, Psychological Resilience, Social Sensitivity, and Need to Belong. For data analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis and bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap method were sequentially conducted. (1) The present study did not find any significant methodological bias, and the observed correlations between physical exercise behavior, psychological resilience, social sensitivity, and need to belong were all statistically significant; (2) Based on the self-determination theory, this study elucidates the relationship between physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience among teenagers. The findings indicate that physical exercise behavior positively predicts the need to belong and psychological resilience, while negatively predicting social sensitivity. Similarly, social sensitivity negatively predicts the need to belong and psychological resilience. Moreover, the need to belong directly and positively predicts psychological resilience. Importantly, all hypotheses proposed in this paper were empirically supported. (3) The indirect effect of the path mediated by social sensitivity is 0.009, while the indirect effect of the path mediated by need to belong is 0.033. Additionally, the combined indirect effect of both social sensitivity and need to belong as mediating variables is 0.014. (4) The cumulative sum of all these indirect effects amounts to 0.056. Based on the self-determination theory, we propose a chain mediation model, specially, physical exercise behavior can significantly positively predict psychological resilience, among which, social sensitivity and need to belong play a significant mediating role between Physical exercise behavior and psychological resilience. In addition, the adoption of good physical exercise behavior can enhance the psychological resilience of adolescents by diminishing social sensitivity and augmenting the need to belong.

Combined associations of cognitive impairment and psychological resilience with all-cause mortality in community-dwelling older adults

BACKGROUND

Cognitive impairment and psychological resilience are closely related in older adults, but their combined effect on mortality has not been reported. Using a nationally representative sample from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study, this study examined the interactions between cognitive impairment and psychological resilience and their associations with overall survival.

METHODS

A total of 32,349 community-dwelling older adults (86.85 ± 11.16 years, 56.06 % female) were enrolled in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014; all participants were followed until 2018. Cognitive function and psychological resilience were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the 7-item psychological resilience questionnaire (PRQ), respectively. Illiterate subjects with an MMSE score <18, or literate subjects with an MMSE score <24 were defined as having cognitive impairment. Cox proportional risk regressions were used to analyze the association of cognitive impairment and psychological resilience with all-cause mortality.

RESULTS

After 146,993.52 person-years of follow-up, 23,349 older adults died. Both MMSE and PRQ scores (as continuous variables) were negatively associated with mortality risk after adjusting for all covariates. The hazard ratio (HR) of all-cause mortality for cognitive impairment was not significantly moderated by levels of psychological resilience (P-interaction = 0.094). In joint analyses, participants with combined cognitive impairment and low resilience (by the median of PRQ: < 25 points) had the highest risk of mortality (adjusted-HR: 1.56, 95%CI: 1.48-1.61), which was higher than that of patients with either condition alone. There was a significant additive interaction effect of cognitive impairment and low resilience on all-cause mortality (relative excess risk due to interaction: 0.11, 95 % CI: 0.09-0.13), and 7 % of the overall mortality risk was attributable to their synergistic effect.

CONCLUSIONS

Cognitive impairment and low resilience are synergistically associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality in community-dwelling older adults. The potential mechanisms underlying this combined effect warrant further exploration.

Latent class analysis of psychological resilience and influencing factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a cross-sectional survey

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the latent class of psychological resilience in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and examine the factors influencing various latent types.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. A total of 480 patients with RA were enrolled from two tertiary care institutions in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, between May and November 2023, using the convenience sample approach. The General Information Questionnaire, CD-RISC-10, SSRS, ASES-8, and BRAF-MDQ were used to analyze the latent classes of psychological resilience in the respondents, and the factors influencing the latent classes were explored using one-way analysis of variance, analysis of variance, and multi-categorical logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

Overall, 423 valid questionnaires were returned, indicating an 88.13% effective return rate. A latent class analysis revealed that RA patients were divided into three classes of psychological resilience: low-level (20.3%), moderate-level (31.0%), and high-level (48.7%) psychological resilience. A multi-categorical logistic regression analysis found that social support, self-efficacy, weariness, age, work status, and somatic pain all significantly influenced psychological resilience in RA patients.

CONCLUSION

Three classes of RA patients' psychological resilience were identified by this study, and these classes were strongly correlated with individual treatment components. It is crucial to take into account the psychological resiliency of female RA patients who do not have a job. In order to improve psychological resilience, healthcare staff should first increase their comprehension of treat-to-target. Furthermore, people with RA may become more psychologically resilient if they receive more social support. Key Points • Preliminary research found that psychological resilience in RA patients was associated with three latent classes. • In RA patients, psychological resilience was significantly influenced by self-efficacy, fatigue, age, work status, physical pain, and social support. • The fundamental goal of bolstering RA patients' psychological resilience is to reaffirm their place in the treatment process, for example, by improving patient compliance and achieving treat-to-target earlier.

Resilience as a psychiatric factor affecting outcomes after total joint arthroplasty: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Mental and psychiatric status continue to be underscreened prior to total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Research on the role of resilience as a psychiatric factor affecting TJA outcomes remains limited. Therefore, our systematic review sought to evaluate the impact of patient resilience in TJA.

METHODS

A systematic review of the literature from the Pubmed, MEDLINE, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar online databases was performed in abidance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies reporting on outcomes following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and/or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) segregated by patient resilience were included. Case reports, reviews, meta-analyses, and conference abstracts were excluded. Primary outcomes of interest included patient-reported outcomes (PROs), surgical outcomes, and postoperative opioid consumption.

RESULTS

Twelve articles were included reporting on a total of 1,577 TJAs. There was a strong agreement that the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)-Physical Health and Mental Health components were strongly predicted by patient resilience. However, there was inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of resilience on UCLA Activity Scales (UCLA) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) outcomes as well as postoperative hip and knee function. Similarly, conflicting evidence was presented regarding the effect of resilience on length of stay (LOS). Greater resilience was associated with reduced opioid usage in the immediate inpatient postoperative period. However, resilience had no significant effect on opioid requirements in the postoperative outpatient follow-up time frame.

CONCLUSION

The present analysis demonstrated mixed, inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of resilience on postoperative outcomes. The paucity of research evaluating this relationship warrants further investigation, examining both short and long-term outcomes. Due to the limited literature evaluating resilience as a predictor of outcomes following TJA, we cannot definitively rule out resilience as a valuable metric and must further examine its utility as a preoperative screening tool.

Sex differences in the relationship between brain gray matter volume and psychological resilience in late adolescence

Psychological resilience reflects an individual's ability to adapt and cope successfully in adverse environments and situations, making it a crucial trait in resisting stress-linked mental disorders and physical diseases. Although prior literature has consistently shown that males are more resilient than females, the sex-linked neuroanatomical correlates of psychological resilience are largely unknown. This study aims to explore the sex-specific relation between psychological resilience and brain gray matter volume (GMV) in adolescents via structural magnetic resonance imaging (s-MRI). A cohort of 231 healthy adolescents (121/110 females/males), aged 16 to 20 completed brain s-MRI scanning and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and other controlling behavioral tests. With s-MRI data, an optimized voxel-based morphometry method was used to estimate regional GMV, and a whole-brain condition-by-covariate interaction analysis was performed to identify the brain regions showing sex effects on the relation between psychological resilience and GMV. Male adolescents scored significantly higher than females on the CD-RISC. The association of psychological resilience with GMV differed between the two sex groups in the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex extending to the adjacent anterior insula, with a positive correlation among males and a negative correlation among females. The sex-specific association between psychological resilience and GMV might be linked to sex differences in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and brain maturation during adolescence. This study may be novel in revealing the sex-linked neuroanatomical basis of psychological resilience, highlighting the need for a more thorough investigation of the role of sex in future studies of psychological resilience and stress-related illness.

Effects of metacognitions, self-compassion, and difficulties in emotion regulation on psychological resilience in oncology nurses

PURPOSE

Providing care to individuals with cancer requires oncology nurses to have superior skills related to physical care and adaptation to the changing healthcare system, as well as witnessing and supporting the psychosocial difficulties experienced by patients and families in this process. It requires oncology nurses to be psychologically resilient. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the factors affecting the psychological resilience of oncology nurses. This study aimed to determine the effect of self-compassion, metacognitions, and difficulties in emotion regulation on psychological resilience in oncology nurses.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional correlational study. The study was conducted with 121 oncology nurses providing active oncologic care and who volunteered to participate. The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form, the Self-Compassion Scale, and the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

The regression model established to determine the effect of self-compassion, metacognitions, and difficulties in emotion regulation on psychological resilience was statistically significant (F(3,117) = 24.086 p < 0.001) and explained 36.6% of the change in resilience. Among the independent variables, only self-compassion had a significant contribution to the model (p = 0.001). According to the model, 1-unit change in self-compassion caused 0.571-unit change in psychological resilience.

CONCLUSION

Self-compassion, metacognitions, and difficulties in emotion regulation were significantly related to psychological resilience, but only self-compassion significantly affected psychological resilience.

Family intimacy and adaptability and non-suicidal self-injury: a mediation analysis

BACKGROUND

Current research has been focusing on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors among adolescents with depression. Although family intimacy and adaptability are considered protective factors for NSSI, evidence supporting this relationship is lacking.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to examine the mechanisms operating in the relationship between family intimacy and adaptability and NSSI behaviors among adolescents.

METHODS

A self-administered general demographic information questionnaire, the Behavioral Functional Assessment Scale for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, the Family Intimacy and Adaptability Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Self-Assessment of Depression Scale were distributed among adolescents with depression in three tertiary hospitals in Jiangsu Province.

RESULTS

The relationship between family intimacy and adaptability and NSSI was assessed among 596 adolescents with depression. The results revealed the following: (1) Family intimacy and adaptability were negatively correlated with NSSI behavior. (2) Psychological resilience and depression levels acted as chain mediators in the relationship between family intimacy and adaptability and NSSI behavior.

CONCLUSIONS

Enhancing psychological resilience, controlling depressive symptoms, and reducing depression severity among adolescents by improving their family intimacy and adaptability are conducive to preventing and mitigating their NSSI behaviors.

Adolescent Mental Health and Resilience Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

PURPOSE

We aimed to assess levels of depression, anxiety, and resilience factors before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in a school sample of adolescents. We also aimed to examine the compensatory and protective effects of individual, family, and school resilience factors on adolescent mental health.

METHODS

We used fall 2019 and fall 2020 survey responses from a cluster randomized controlled trial implemented in 20 schools in a Midwestern county. The sample consisted of 3,085 responses from students in grades 5 and 6. Multilevel mixed-effects models with cluster robust standard errors were used to investigate the associations between exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health (anxiety, depression), and resilience factors (future orientation, family engagement, and having a caring school adult).

RESULTS

Anxiety, but not depression, was higher in fall 2020 compared to fall 2019. Family engagement increased during the pandemic, while future orientation of the student body was lower during that time and the prevalence of having a caring adult at school was unchanged. A positive future orientation was associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression, while having a caring school adult was associated with lower depression. Adolescents with less positive future orientations, low family engagement, and no caring school adults experienced the greatest increases in anxiety.

DISCUSSION

Positive future orientations, family engagement, and supportive nonparental adult relationships had compensatory and protective effects on adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adding these measures to the inventory of modifiable resilience factors during natural disasters may promote healthy adaptation among adolescents.

Mixed-Mode Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for psychological resilience, Self Esteem and Stigma of patients with schizophrenia: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

People with schizophrenia often face challenges such as lower psychological resilience, reduced self-worth, and increased social stigma, hindering their recovery. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has shown promise in boosting psychological resilience and self-esteem while diminishing stigma. However, MBCT demands professional involvement and substantial expenses, adding to the workload of professionals and the financial strain on patients. Mixed-mode Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (M-MBCT) integrates both "face-to-face" and "self-help" approaches to minimize staff effort and costs. This study aims to assess the impact of M-MBCT on the psychological resilience, self-esteem, and stigma in schizophrenia patients.

METHODS

This randomized, controlled, parallel-group, assessor-blinded clinical trial enrolled 174 inpatients with schizophrenia. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group underwent an 8-week M-MBCT intervention, while the control group received standard treatment. Data collection employed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI), and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) before and after the intervention. Post-intervention, significant differences in ISMI, CD-RISC, and RSES scores were observed between the experimental and control groups.

RESULTS

In the experimental group, ISMI scores notably decreased, while CD-RISC and RSES scores significantly increased (P < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis identified age, education, and family history of mental illness as significant factors related to stigma (P < 0.05). Additionally, correlation analysis indicated a significant negative relationship between the reduction in CD-RISC scores and the reduction in ISMI scores (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

M-MBCT effectively enhanced psychological resilience and self-esteem while diminishing stigma in individuals with schizophrenia. M-MBCT emerges as a promising treatment option for schizophrenia sufferers.

The effect of perceived social support on psychological resilience and surgical fear in surgical oncology patients

In our study, we examined the effect of perceived social support on psychological resilience and surgical fear in surgical oncology patients. This study was performed with 139 patients planning to have surgery at the oncology unit of a research and practice hospital in Turkey. The Personal Information Form, the Multi-Dimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Surgical Fear Questionnaire were used in the data collection process. Of all surgical oncology patients participating in our study, 51.8% were aged 45-64 years, 60.4% were male, 41.7% were diagnosed with a malignancy in the last 4-7 months, 66.9% had comorbidities alongside the malignancy, and 21.6% had colorectal tumors whilst 20.1% had malignant tumors in the liver. Surgical oncology patients' psychological resilience had statistically significant relationships with their surgical fear and perceived social support (p = 0.000). It was determined that the independent variable of perceived social support explained 59% of the total variance (R2 = 0.593, p = 0.000) in the resilience dependent variable and 35% of the variance in the surgical fear dependent variable (R2 = 0.353, p = 0.000). The increase in perceived social support of surgical oncology patients increases their psychological resilience. The increasing psychological resilience of the patients and the increase in perceived social support also reduce their fear of surgery. In this context, it is recommended that patients who will undergo oncological surgery should increase their social support in the early period and take initiatives to increase their psychological resilience.

Caregiver Burden and Readiness in Patients with Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: The Chain Mediation Effect of Disease Uncertainty and Mental Resilience

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the mediating effects of caregiver illness uncertainty and psychological resilience in caregiver burden and readiness in patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). This can help improve caregiver readiness in patients with moderate-to-severe TBIs.

METHODS

A purposive sampling method was used to recruit patients with moderate-to-severe TBIs, and their caregivers, who were hospitalized in the Department of Neurosurgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University between October 2022 and August 2023. The Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview, Mishel Uncertainty In Scale for Family Member, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Caregivers Preparedness Scale, as well as general information questionnaire, were used to conduct the survey.

RESULTS

Caregiver readiness correlated with caregiver burden, illness uncertainty, and psychological resilience in patients with moderate-to-severe TBI (P < 0.01). Caregiver readiness was not only directly affected by caregiver burden (95% confidence interval: -0.510, -0.196) but was also affected through the chain mediation of illness uncertainty and psychological resilience (95% confidence interval: -0.146, -0.011).

CONCLUSIONS

Caregiver burden in patients with moderate-to-severe TBI influences caregiver readiness levels and is mediated by illness uncertainty and psychological resilience. By improving caregivers' illness uncertainty and increasing their psychological resilience, the impact of low caregiver readiness caused by high caregiver burden could be reduced.

The effect of resilience on bipolar mood during specialty clinic treatment

BACKGROUND

Limitations in mental health resources behoove exploration of factors that may enhance treatment response. One such factor, resilience, has been minimally examined in bipolar disorder.

METHODS

With multi-level modeling of clinical care data, we examined associations among longitudinal measurements of resilience and mood rating trajectories in a sample of 100 individuals with bipolar disorder during 6 weeks of evidence-based pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

RESULTS

Individuals with high self-care subscale scores from the Resilience Questionnaire for Bipolar Disorder exhibited an improving rate of depression change -0.18 (SE = 0.04, p < .001) completing treatment with a subthreshold depression rating of 3.1 (SE = 1.39, p < .05). In contrast, treatment recipients who disagreed or were neutral towards self-care experienced worsening or no change in depression, respectively. This subscale also decreased mood elevation. Each one-point increase yielded a -0.27 (SE = 0.13 p < .05) point decrease in mania.

LIMITATIONS

Resilience may develop longitudinally. In this study, it was examined during active treatment which was a relatively brief period of time.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher bipolar resilience could identify individuals more likely to exhibit improvement in mood during bipolar specialty clinic treatment.

Influencing Factors of Psychological Resilience in Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

To systematically review the current status and influencing factors of psychological resilience in stroke patients and to provide a theoretical basis for future personalized rehabilitation support and psychological interventions.

METHOD

This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. A comprehensive search of databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, CMB, and WANGFANG was conducted from inception until November 22, 2023, resulting in the retrieval of 2099 studies. Literature screening and data extraction were performed by two independent evaluators based on pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4 software.

RESULTS

The final review included 23 studies. The results showed that self-efficacy, hope, confrontation coping, avoidance coping, functional independence, quality of life, and social support were positively associated with psychological resilience. Conversely, anxiety, depression, and resignation coping were negatively associated with psychological resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with stroke have a low level of psychological resilience, which was influenced by a variety of factors. However, longitudinal and large sample studies are needed to further confirm these findings. These results should be integrated into clinical practice for early assessment and targeted intervention in psychological resilience to assist patients in coping with the rehabilitation process and life changes after a stroke.

The effect of having a child with hearing impairment on parents

OBJECTIVE

In this study, it was aimed to compare parents of children with hearing impairment (with cochlear implant (CI) or hearing aid) and parents of children with normal hearing (NH) in terms of care burden, self-efficacy and psychological resilience levels.

METHODS

The study participants were parents of children aged 3-12 years. Zarit Care Burden Scale (ZCBS), Parental Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES) and Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS) were administered to the parents.

RESULTS

The mean BPRS score was statistically significantly higher for the NH group than for the hearing impairment groups. It was found that the mean ZCBS score was statistically significantly higher for CI group than for the other groups (p < 0.05). A statistically significant and positive correlation was found between the PSES and BPRS scores of the CI group.

CONCLUSION

It is thought that the results of this study will contribute to the creation of case-specific intervention/rehabilitation programs.

Explaining improvement in diabetes distress: a longitudinal analysis of the predictive relevance of resilience and acceptance in people with type 1 diabetes

AIMS

To analyze if midterm improvement in diabetes distress can be explained by resilience, diabetes acceptance, and patient characteristics.

METHODS

N = 179 adults with type 1 diabetes were enrolled during their stay at a tertiary diabetes center (monocentric enrolment) and followed up over three months in a prospective, observational study ('DIA-LINK1'). Improvement in diabetes distress was assessed as reduction in the Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale score from baseline to follow-up. Resilience (Resilience Scale-13), acceptance (Diabetes Acceptance Scale), and patient characteristics were analyzed as predictors of improvement in diabetes distress using hierarchical multiple regression.

RESULTS

Greater reductions in diabetes distress were significantly explained by lower diabetes acceptance at baseline (β = -0.34, p < 0.01), while resilience, diabetes complications, and other person-related variables were not significantly related to changes in diabetes distress (all p > 0.05). When change in diabetes acceptance from baseline to follow-up was added to the model, improved diabetes distress was explained by increasing diabetes acceptance (β = 0.41, p < 0.01) and a shorter duration of diabetes (β = -0.18, p = 0.03), while baseline diabetes acceptance was no longer significantly associated (β = -0.14, p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Diabetes acceptance is inversely related to diabetes distress, and increasing acceptance explained greater improvement in diabetes distress. These findings suggest that increasing diabetes acceptance may facilitate the reduction of diabetes distress. Treatment approaches targeting acceptance might be useful for the mental healthcare of people with type 1 diabetes and clinically elevated diabetes distress.

Social support, family resilience and psychological resilience among maintenance hemodialysis patients: a longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Psychological distress is common in maintenance hemodialysis patients, and high psychological resilience can promote psychological well-being. The current research focuses on psychological resilience protective factors such as family resilience and social support. However, the trajectories of psychological resilience, family resilience, and social support over time and their longitudinal relationships in maintenance hemodialysis patients have not been fully explored yet. Therefore, this study aims to explore the longitudinal relationship between these factors.

METHODS

Patients who received regular hemodialysis treatment for more than three months at dialysis centers of three tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang, China, were recruited from September to December 2020. A total of 252 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria completed three follow-up surveys, including social support, family resilience, and psychological resilience assessments. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to explore differences in their respective scores at different time points. The cross-lagged analysis was performed in AMOS using the maximum likelihood method to examine the the reciprocal predictive relationships between these factors.

RESULTS

Social support and psychological resilience remained relatively stable over time, whereas family resilience indicated a little increasing trend. According to the cross-lagged analysis, higher T1 social support predicted higher family resilience at T2 [β = 0.123, 95% CI (0.026-0.244)]. Further, the effects of T2 social support to T3 family resilience [β = 0.194, 95%CI (0.039-0.335)] and psychological resilience [β = 0.205, 95%CI (0.049-0.354)] were significant. Finally, the effects of T2 family resilience to T3 social support [β = 0.122, 95%CI (0.010-0.225)] and psychological resilience [β = 0.244, 95%CI (0.119-0.359)] were also significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The study showed that the directionality of the relationship appears to be from social support or family resilience to patients' psychological resilience but not vice versa. This finding reminds healthcare professionals to emphasize the vital role of social and family resources in providing appropriate support and interventions for maintenance hemodialysis patients to promote psychological resilience and mental health development.

Effects of psychological intervention on negative emotions and psychological resilience in breast cancer patients after radical mastectomy

Breast cancer (BC)is the most common malignant tumor in women, and the treatment process not only results in physical pain but also significant psychological distress in patients. Psychological intervention (PI) has been recognized as an important approach in treating postoperative psychological disorders in BC patients. It has been proven that PI has a significant therapeutic effect on post-operative psychological disorders, improving patients' negative emotions, enhancing their psychological resilience, and effectively enhancing their quality of life and treatment compliance.

The relationship between family communication and family resilience in Chinese parents of depressed adolescents: a serial multiple mediation of social support and psychological resilience

BACKGROUND

Family resilience plays a crucial role in helping depressed adolescents overcome challenges. However, studies examining family resilience in depressed adolescents are currently scarce. This study, guided by the family resilience framework, aimed to investigate the serial-multiple mediation of social support and psychological resilience between family communication and family resilience in Chinese families of depressed adolescents.

METHODS

In 229 parents of adolescents with major depressive disorder, 20.1% comprises of fathers, while 79.9% comprises of mothers. The mean age of depressed adolescents was 14.84 (±1.76) years, and the mean age of parents of these depressed adolescents was 43.24 (±4.67) years. The Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS), the Psychological Resilience of Parents of Special Children Questionnaire, and the Social Support Rating Scale, Family Assessment Device (FAD) were used to collected data. Descriptive, univariate, and Pearson correlation analyses were used in preliminary analyses. To explore mediation, we employed a serial-multiple mediation model (PROCESS model 6).

RESULTS

Family communication was positively correlated with family resilience, social support, and psychological resilience. Mediation analysis revealed indirect effects of family communication on family resilience, which were mediated solely by either social support or psychological resilience, or through multiple mediation pathways involving both social support and psychological resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Family communication positively and directly affects the family resilience of depressed adolescents, and a higher level of social support and psychological resilience can help improve family resilience. These findings not only provide empirical evidence supporting the family resilience framework but also have practical implications for future family interventions targeting depressed adolescents.

Effects of mindfulness on depression in college students: mediating role of psychological resilience and moderating role of gender

OBJECTIVE

A questionnaire was administered to 936 college students to investigate the mediating effect of psychological resilience in the association between mindfulness and college student depression, as well as the moderating role of gender.

METHODS

For this study, data was collected between 20 April and 1 May 2023 at three universities in Jiangxi Province using a random sampling method. 963 Chinese university students were surveyed using the Adolescent Mindfulness Scale, the Psychological Resilience Scale, and the Depression Self-Rating Scale.SPSS24.0 software was used for correlation analysis and linear regression analysis, and PROCESS v3.4 model 7 was used to analyze this mediated model with moderating effects.

RESULTS

In the mediated effects model, the direct effect of mindfulness on college depression levels was significant (95% CI -0.43, -0.31); the indirect effect of mindfulness on college depression through psychological resilience was also significant (95% CI -0.34, -0.23); the interaction effect of mindfulness and gender was also found to be significant (95% CI 0.03, 0.16) in the mediated model with moderation.

CONCLUSION

Mindfulness not only affect depression directly, but also indirectly through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. At the same time, the prediction of psychological resilience by mindfulness was also moderated by gender, with girls' psychological resilience being more affected by the level of mindfulness compared to boys.

Pathway from childhood trauma to nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents with major depressive disorder: the chain-mediated role of psychological resilience and depressive severity

This study aimed to explore the pathway from childhood trauma to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and to examine the chain-mediating role of psychological resilience and depressive symptoms in this pathway. A total of 391 adolescents with MDD were recruited in the present study. The Chinese version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Chinese version of the Symptoms Check List-90 (SCL-90), the Chinese version of the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory Chinese Revised Edition (OSIC) were used to evaluate childhood trauma, depressive symptoms, psychological resilience and NSSI, respectively. Our results showed that 60.87% of adolescents with MDD had NSSI in the past month. Childhood trauma frequency was negatively correlated with psychological resilience but positively correlated with depressive symptoms and NSSI severity in adolescents with MDD. The stepwise logistic regression analysis identified that age, childhood trauma and depressive symptoms could independently predict the occurrence of NSSI, and the three-step hierarchical regression showed that childhood trauma, psychological resilience and depressive symptoms were all significantly associated with NSSI frequency in adolescents with MDD. Furthermore, the chain-mediation analysis revealed that psychological resilience and depression serially mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and NSSI in adolescents with MDD. Interventions targeted at improving resilience and depression may mitigate the impact of childhood trauma severity on NSSI risk in adolescents with MDD.

Association of psychological resilience and cognitive function in older adults: Based on the Ma' anshan Healthy Aging Cohort Study

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to explore whether psychological resilience can influence changes in cognitive function in older adults and provide clues and rationale for improving cognitive function and preventing the onset of dementia in the geriatric population.

METHODS

A total of 2495 older adults aged 60 years or older from the Ma' anshan Healthy Aging Cohort were included in the study. Participants' cognitive functioning and psychological resilience were measured using the MMSE (mini-mental state examination) scale and the SRQS (stress resilience quotient scale) scale during the 5 years of follow-up, and the association was explored. Those with MMSE scores ≤ 17 in the illiterate group, ≤ 20 in the elementary school group, and ≤ 24 in the secondary school and above group were considered cognitive impairment.

RESULTS

The prevalence of cognitive impairment increased from 6.89% to 14.30% during the five years of follow-up. At 5-year follow-up, the group with the highest psychological resilience had 41 (6.83%) individuals whose cognitive functioning changed from normal to cognitive impairment, while the group with the worst psychological resilience had 114 (18.33%) individuals. The study also found a significant effect of different levels of psychological resilience on changes in cognitive functioning after adjusting for potential confounders. Compared with Q1 (the reference group), the Odds ratio of cognitive decline in Q2, Q3 and Q4 groups were 0.51(0.42,0.64), 0.37(0.29,0.47) and 0.19(0.13,0.27), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Improving the level of psychological resilience in older adults may be one way to prevent the incidence of cognitive impairment.

Contribution of rumination and psychological resilience to post-traumatic growth of front-line healthcare workers in mobile cabin hospitals under Normalized epidemic Prevention and Control Requirements

To understand the level of post-traumatic growth (PTG) and influencing factors among front-line healthcare workers (HCWs) working in mobile cabin hospitals treating patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) under the Normalized Epidemic Prevention and Control Requirements adopted in China. A random sampling method was used to select 540 HCWs of the Chongqing-aid-Shanghai medical team from April to May 2022 as the study participants. Participants completed a general information questionnaire, the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Chinese version (PTGI-C), the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Chinese Event Related Rumination Inventory (C-ERRI). Among the 540 included HCWs, 83.15 % were nurses and 78.89 % were women. The average scores for PTG (62.25 ± 16.73) and psychological resilience (64.22 ± 15.38) were at moderate levels, and the average score for rumination was low (21.62 ± 10.77). Pearson correlation analysis showed that CD-RISC and C-ERRI scores were positive with the PTGI-C score (r = 0.528, 0.316, P < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis identified psychological training or intervention during the COVID-19 epidemic (β = 2.353, P = 0.044), psychological resilience (β = 0.525, P < 0.001) and deliberate rumination (β = 0.732, P < 0.001) as factors significantly associated with the PTG of front-line HCWs, which together explained 36.8 % of the total variance in PTG (F[5,539] = 63.866, P < 0.001). In general, psychological resilience and deliberate rumination can promote PTG among HCWs and can be improved by strengthening psychological training and interventions for HCWs working under the Normalized Epidemic Prevention and Control Requirements.

Effects of cognitive behavioral and psychological intervention on social adaptation, psychological resilience and level of hope in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in radiotherapy

Objective

To evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral and psychological intervention(CBPI) on social adaptation, psychological resilience, and the level of hope in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) in radiotherapy.

Methods

This is application research. Eighty patients undergoing radiotherapy for NPC at Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University from November 20, 2020 to November 15, 2022 were randomized into control and study groups at a 1:1 ratio. While the control group was provided with standard specialized nursing care, the study group was offered CBPI in addition to the exact nursing care. Differences in quality of life, psychological resilience, level of hope, emotional state, and patient satisfaction between the groups were compared and analyzed before and after treatment.

Results

After an intervention, significantly improved physical, mental, and social functions and material living conditions were observed in the study group compared with the control group (all p< 0.05). Although both groups scored higher on the selected psychological resilience scale following the intervention, the study group showed better results as compared to control group in adaptability, tenacity, control, and goal orientation (all p< 0.05). While both groups had elevated scores of temporality and future, interconnectedness, and positive readiness and expectancy at the end of the intervention, the improvements were more pronounced in the study group (all p< 0.05).

Conclusion

CBPI supports radiotherapy for NPC by improving patients' quality of life, confidence in treatment, the hope of recovery, psychological resilience, anxiety, depression, and patient satisfaction. Therefore, this treatment strategy is worthy of wide application in clinical settings.

The mediating effect of psychological resilience between social support and anxiety/depression in people living with HIV/AIDS-a study from China

Objective To understand the relationship between psychological resilience in social support and anxiety/depression in people living with HIV/AIDS and to verify whether there is a mediating effect. Methods The questionnaire was administered to 161 people living with HIV/AIDS in a hospital. The questionnaire contained a general questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Psychological Resilience Inventory (CD-RICS), and the Social Collaborative Support Scale (PSSS), and Pearson correlation analyses were used to explore the correlation between the factors and anxiety/depression, stratified linear regression analyses were used to validate the mediation model, and the bootstrap method was used to test for mediating effects. Results Anxiety was negatively correlated with psychological resilience and social support (r=-0.232, P < 0.01; r=-0.293, P < 0.01); depression was negatively correlated with psychological resilience and social support (r=-0.382, P < 0.01; r=-0.482, P < 0.01); there was a mediation effect model of social support between psychological resilience and anxiety/depression; psychological resilience played a fully mediating role in social support and anxiety/depression, with an effect contribution of 68.42%/59.34% and a 95% CI(-0.256~-0.036)/(-0.341 to~-0.106). Conclusion Psychological resilience plays a complete mediating effect between social support and anxiety/depression. It is recommended that more channels of social support be provided to patients with HIV/AIDS, thereby enhancing their psychological resilience and reducing anxiety/depression levels.

Measuring Resilience in Long-term Sick-listed Individuals: Validation of the Resilience Scale for Adults

Return to work from long-term sick leave is influenced by personal and social factors, which can be measured by resilience, a construct that describe healthy adaptation against adversity. This study aimed to validate the validity and psychometric properties of the resilience scale for adults in a sample of long-term sick-listed individuals, and to investigate measurement invariance when compared with a university student sample. Confirmatory factor analysis was used on a sick-listed sample (n = 687) to identify the scale?s factor structure, and comparison with a university student sample (n = 241) was utilized to determine measurement invariance. Results show that a slightly modified factor structure, in accordance with previous research, achieved acceptable fit in the sick-listed sample, while comparisons with the student sample supported measurement invariance. This means that the study to a large degree support the factor structure of the resilience scale for adults in long-term sick-listed. Furthermore, the results indicate that the scale is similarly understood among long-term sick-listed as in a previously validated student sample. Thus, the resilience scale for adults can be a valid and reliable measure of protective factors in the long-term sickness absence and return to work context, and the subscale and total score can be interpreted similarly in long-term sick-listed as in other populations.

Predictors of compassion satisfaction among healthcare professionals working in intensive care units: A cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

To determine the prevalence of compassion satisfaction, related factors, and predictors among healthcare professionals in Thai intensive care units.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 12 intensive care units at a university hospital in Thailand from August to November 2022. All nurses and doctors were invited to complete an anonymous online survey which included: the Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Passion Scale, Flourishing Scale, and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regressions were used for data analysis in SPSS 28.0.

RESULTS

A total of 178 nurses and doctors participated (92.13% nurses, 89.89% female, mean 32.10 years). Average compassion satisfaction (assessed using the Professional Quality of Life Scale) was moderate, with a mean score of 37.94 (SD = 5.58). The final regression model predicting compassion satisfaction was significant and explained 65% of the variance in compassion satisfaction, F (11, 154) = 26.00, p < 0.001. Four out of 11 predictor variables made unique statistically significant contributions to the final model: resilience (β = 0.48, p < 0.001), harmonious passion (β = 0.24, p < 0.001), being a nurse (not a doctor; β = 0.17, p < 0.05), and holding a postgraduate qualification (β = 0.10, p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Most healthcare professionals in critical care units have a moderate level of compassion satisfaction, which is correlated with resilience, flourishing, and harmonious passion. Resilience and harmonious passion predict compassion satisfaction. These factors are modifiable through intervention.

IMPLICATION FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Assessment of staff psychological well-being can identify those at risk for stress and impaired professional quality of life. Resilience and harmonious passion predict compassion satisfaction and can be modified through psychological interventions to promote psychological well-being and professional quality of life in healthcare workers in intensive care units.

The chain mediating role of psychological resilience and neuroticism between intolerance of uncertainty and perceived stress among medical university students in Southwest China

BACKGROUND

Medical university students are confronted with unprecedented uncertainty and stress compared with their peers. Research has explored the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on perceived stress, but little attention was paid to investigate the mediating mechanisms behind this relationship, especially among medical university students. The aim of this study was to examine whether psychological resilience and neuroticism played a mediating role between medical university students' intolerance of uncertainty and perceived stress.

METHODS

A total of 717 medical university students from Chongqing in Southwest China were recruited to participate in our study and completed demographic information, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale Short Version (IUS-12), Chinese Version of Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 (CD-RISC-10) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ).

RESULTS

(1) Significant correlations between intolerance of uncertainty, perceived stress, psychological resilience and neuroticism were found. (2) Intolerance of uncertainty affected medical university students' perceived stress via three paths: the mediating effect of psychological resilience, the mediating effect of neuroticism, and the chain mediating effect of both psychological resilience and neuroticism.

CONCLUSIONS

Intolerance of uncertainty could directly affect the perceived stress of medical university students, and also affected perceived stress through the mediating roles of psychological resilience and neuroticism, as well as through the chain mediating role of these two variables.

Psychological resilience and quality of life among middle-aged and older adults hospitalized with chronic diseases: multiple mediating effects through sleep quality and depression

BACKGROUND

The present study is intended to examine the multiple mediating roles of sleep quality and depression in the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in middle-aged and older adults hospitalized with chronic diseases.

METHODS

From October 2, 2021, to February 27, 2022, a questionnaire survey was conducted using a multistage stratified sampling method among 339 middle-aged and older adults (45 years and over) hospitalized with chronic diseases. These participants were recruited from a hospital in Zhejiang Province, China. The questionnaire included the Aged Cumulative Disease Rating Scale, the Psychological Resilience Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Scale, the Depression Scale, and the Quality-of-Life Scale. A descriptive analysis was performed to characterize the sample. Linear regression was utilized to evaluate the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life. Amos 24.0 was used to analyze the multiple mediated effects of sleep quality and depression.

RESULTS

Psychological resilience exerted a remarkable direct effect on the quality of life in middle-aged and older adults hospitalized with chronic diseases (β = 0.239, 95% CI = 0.125-0.354), which represented 52.98% of the total effect. Through three significantly mediated pathways indirectly affect the quality of life: (1) through the sleep quality pathway (β = 0.115, 95% CI = 0.056-0.201), which represented 25.39% of the total effect; (2) through the depression pathway (β = 0. 060, 95% CI = 0.023-0.114), which represented 13.24% of the total effect; and (3) through both the sleep quality and depression pathway (β = 0. 038, 95% CI = 0.019-0.074), which represented 8.39% of the total effect. The total mediating effect was 47.02%.

CONCLUSIONS

Sleep quality and depression mediate the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in middle-aged and older adults hospitalized with chronic diseases. Therefore, healthcare professionals and stakeholders should be concerned about the sleep status and mental health of middle-aged and older adults hospitalized with chronic diseases, strengthen their attention to psychological resilience, and provide interventions and treatment measures for hospitalized patients who have sleep problems and depressive tendencies.

The moderating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between falls, anxiety and depressive symptoms

BACKGROUND

There is a greater likelihood of anxiety and depression among older adults who suffer falls. This study examined the relationships of falls and severe falls with anxiety and depressive symptoms, and the moderating role of psychological resilience on these associations.

METHODS

Our study recruited participants from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a nationally representative cohort study. A total of 11,857 participants included in the analysis. We used a linear regression model to investigate the relationship between falls/severe falls and anxiety/depressive symptoms, adjusting for a range of potential covariates and a bootstrapping sample test to examine the potential moderating role of psychological resilience in these relationships.

RESULTS

Older adults who suffered the falls have higher anxiety/depressive symptoms (β = 0.28 [0.23, 0.32] for anxiety symptoms, p < 0.001; β = 0.21 [0.16, 0.25] for depressive symptoms, p < 0.001), and those who suffered the severe falls have higher anxiety/depressive symptoms (β = 0.30 [0.24, 0.37] for anxiety symptoms, p < 0.001; β = 0.21 [0.15, 0.27] for depressive symptoms, p < 0.001), in the fully adjusted model. The relationship between falls/severe falls and anxiety/depressive symptoms was mitigated in participants with higher levels of psychological resilience.

LIMITATIONS

The present study is based on cross-sectional data, which limits the ability to infer causal relationships.

CONCLUSIONS

Falls/severe falls were positively associated with anxiety and depression, and that psychological resilience could moderate this association. Our findings suggest that psychological resilience may be an effective target for intervention and prevention of fall-related symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Community-based service, psychological resilience and life satisfaction among Chinese older adults: A longitudinal study

Previous research has suggested that community-based service is beneficial in promoting older adults' life satisfaction. However, there is limited knowledge of the mediating mechanisms that foster this relationship. Thus, the current study aims to explore the mediating role of psychological resilience in the association between community-based service and life satisfaction among older adults. Using data collected over four rounds of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), this study analyzes the responses of 1439 older adults in China. The results reveal that community-based service is positively related to life satisfaction among older adults. Furthermore, psychological resilience partially mediates this association, highlighting its potential role in promoting life satisfaction. These findings contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship between community-based service and older adults' life satisfaction while offering practical implications for enhancing the life satisfaction of older adults in China.

Fear of relapse and quality of life in multiple sclerosis: The mediating role of psychological resilience

The goal of this study was to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between fear of relapse and quality of life in a sample of patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). This cross-sectional study was developed online. A total of 240 PwMS were surveyed using the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life inventory, the Fear of Relapse Scale and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. To perform the mediation analysis PROCESS macro was used. In our study, fear of relapse was a predictor of psychological resilience and quality of life, and psychological resilience was a predictor of quality of life. Finally, psychological resilience showed a mediating role in the relationship between fear of relapse and quality of life. Considering that resilience is a modifiable variable, the implementation of interventions aimed at enhancing resilience can have a favorable impact on the psychological well-being and quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis.

The relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life among the Chinese diabetes patients: the mediating role of stigma and the moderating role of empowerment

BACKGROUND

Although some factors, such as stigma and empowerment, influence the complex relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life, few studies have explored similar psychological mechanisms among patients with diabetes. Therefore, this study explored the mediating role of stigma and the moderating role of empowerment in the psychological mechanisms by which psychological resilience affects quality of life.

METHODS

From June to September 2022, data were collected by multi-stage stratified sampling and random number table method. Firstly, six tertiary hospitals in Wuhu were numbered and then selected using the random number table method, resulting in the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College being selected. Secondly, two departments were randomly selected from this hospital: endocrinology and geriatrics. Thirdly, survey points were set up in each department, and T2DM patients were randomly selected for questionnaire surveys. In addition, we used the Connor-Davidson Elasticity Scale (CD-RISC) to measure the psychological resilience of patients, and used the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness (SSCI) to measure stigma. Empowerment was measured by the Diabetes Empowerment Scale (DES). Quality of Life was assessed by the Diabetes Quality of Life Scale (DQoL). We used SPSS (version 21) and PROCESS (version 4.1) for data analysis.

RESULTS

(1) Psychological resilience was negatively correlated with stigma and quality of life, and positively correlated with empowerment. Stigma was positively associated with empowerment and quality of life. Empowerment was negatively correlated with quality of life. (2) The mediation analysis showed that psychological resilience had a direct predictive effect on the quality of life, and stigma partially mediated the relationship; Empowerment moderates the first half of "PR → stigma → quality of life"; Empowerment moderates the latter part of "PR → stigma → quality of life."

CONCLUSIONS

Under the mediating effect of stigma, psychological resilience can improve quality of life. Empowerment has a moderating effect on the relationship between psychological resilience and stigma, and it also has a moderating effect on the relationship between stigma and quality of life. These results facilitate the understanding of the relationship mechanisms between psychological resilience and quality of life.

Status and influential factors of spiritual well-being in cancer patients with drug clinical trials: a cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spiritual well-being status of cancer patients in drug clinical trials and its influencing factors, and to provide theoretical support for the spiritual health intervention of clinical trial cancer patients.

METHODS

This cross-section study was conducted among 244 cancer patients in clinical trials. The Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale Short Form (MSAS-SF), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC 10), and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual (FACIT-SP-12) were used to measure symptom burden, psychological resilience, and spiritual well-being. The Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the influencing factors of patients' spiritual health.

RESULTS

The overall spiritual health level of cancer patients with clinical trials was high (36.87 ± 11.0), and the spiritual health level was positively correlated with psychological resilience (r = 0.872, P < 0.001). Religious belief, nationality, treatment regimen, and resilience were independent risk factors for the spiritual health of cancer patients in clinical trials. Patients with religious beliefs (β = 0.097, P = 0.012), ethnic minorities (β = 0.087, P = 0.023), and high resilience scores (β = 0.874, P < 0.001) had higher levels of spiritual health. Patients who received single antineoplastic therapy (β =  - 0.079, P = 0.028) had lower levels of spiritual health.

CONCLUSION

Our study found that the spiritual health of cancer patients in clinical trials was at a high level, superior to cancer patients receiving conventional anti-tumor therapy. Religious belief, nationality, treatment regimen, and psychological resilience were the influential factors of spiritual health.

Psychological resilience in athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative insight

This study employs a qualitative research methodology to comprehensively investigate the psychological resilience of athletes impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through purposeful sampling, a diverse group of athletes representing various sports, competitive levels, and geographic locations was selected, ensuring a holistic exploration of their experiences. Data collection centered on in-depth interviews, utilizing a semi-structured approach guided by predetermined open-ended questions. Ethical standards were meticulously upheld, with informed consent obtained from all participants, and strict measures in place to safeguard their confidentiality and anonymity. Prior to data collection, pilot testing of interview questions was conducted to enhance their clarity and appropriateness. Subsequently, data analysis involved the meticulous transcription of field-notes and audio-recordings into protocols and transcripts, followed by systematic coding facilitated by qualitative data management software. To enhance research rigor, strategies including reflexivity, member-checking, and collaborative coding were embraced. This comprehensive methodology facilitated a deep and nuanced exploration of athletes' experiences, perceptions, and coping strategies during the pandemic, ultimately contributing valuable insights to the study of psychological resilience in sports. The findings shed light on the challenges athletes faced, the support systems and personal attributes that fostered resilience, and the role of well-being practices like mindfulness and self-care in enhancing psychological resilience. The implications of this research extend to proactive strategies for sports organizations and stakeholders, fostering a culture of resilience, and empowering athletes to thrive in the face of adversity, ultimately promoting their long-term psychological well-being.

Influence of resilience on depression among nurses in clean operating departments: The mediating effect of life satisfaction

BACKGROUND

A clean operating room is an important part of surgical and critical treatment in hospitals. The workload is substantial, the pace is rapid, and the working environment is intense; therefore, nurses who work in clean operating rooms are constantly challenged, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Life satisfaction and resilience are important factors that ensure mental health. Therefore, exploring the mediating role of life satisfaction in the influence of resilience on depression among nurses in clean operating rooms can help improve nursing services and teamwork.

AIM

To explore the mediating effect of satisfaction on the influence of resilience on depression among nurses in a clean operating department.

METHODS

From April to November 2022, 196 nurses from the Department of Clean Operating at Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital participated in this study. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. Participants' gender, age, marital status, position, length of service, personal monthly income, daily working hours, employment status, and professional title were collected, and the Connor-Davidson resilience scale, satisfaction with life scale, and self-rating depression scale were used to evaluate resilience, life satisfaction, and depression. The researchers conducted professional training in advance, introduced the research methods to the participants before the investigation, and explained the study's significance and purpose. Surveys were distributed and collected on-site. Each questionnaire took 30 min to complete.

RESULTS

The average scores for life satisfaction, resilience, and depression were 3.13 (± 0.28), 4.09 (± 0.78), and 56.21 (± 8.70), respectively. The correlation between resilience and depression was negative (r = -0.829, P < 0.01). Life satisfaction was positively related to resilience (r = 0.855, P < 0.01) and negatively related to depression (r = -0.778, P < 0.01). The relationship between resilience and depression was partially mediated by life satisfaction. The value of the mediating effect was -6.853 (26.68% of the total effect).

CONCLUSION

Life satisfaction partially mediates the link between resilience and depression among nurses in clean operating departments.

Military Veterans: Results from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study

Following exposure to traumatic life events, most individuals are psychologically resilient, and experience minimal-to-no symptoms of posttraumatic stress, major depressive, or generalized anxiety disorders. To date, however, most research has focused on factors associated with adverse post-trauma mental health outcomes rather than understanding those associated with psychological resilience. In particular, little is known about factors associated with psychological resilience in veterans, despite their high rates of trauma exposure, such as combat and military sexual trauma. To address this gap, we used a discrepancy-based psychiatric resilience (DBPR) analytic approach to operationalize psychological resilience, and to identify modifiable health and psychosocial factors associated with resilience in a nationally representative sample of U.S. veterans (N = 4,069). DBPR scores were computed by regressing a composite measure of distress (posttraumatic stress, major depressive, and generalized anxiety disorder symptoms) onto measures of adverse childhood experiences, combat exposure, military sexual trauma, and cumulative potentially traumatic events (e.g., natural disaster, life-threatening illness/injury). Psychological resilience was operationalized as lower actual, relative to predicted, composite distress scores. Results revealed that greater emotional stability (22.9% relative variance explained [RVE]) and mindfulness (13.4% RVE), lower likelihood of lifetime histories of MDD or PTSD (12.8% RVE), greater purpose in life (11.9% RVE), and lower severity of somatic symptoms (10.8% RVE) explained the majority of the variance in resilience scores (total R2 = 0.40). Taken together, results of this study illustrate the utility of a DBPR score approach to operationalizing psychological resilience to traumatic stress in U.S. veterans, and identify several modifiable health and psychosocial factors that can be targeted in prevention and treatment efforts designed to bolster resilience in this population.

Examination of the relationship between thanatophobia and resilience levels of nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units

BACKGROUND

Nurses in critical care and palliative care units care for patients suffering from severe pain and suffering and at high mortality risk. For this reason, nurses working in these units should be psychologically resilient. However, nurses who are constantly exposed to the death process face the risk of thanatophobia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between thanatophobia levels and the psychological resilience of nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units.

METHODS

The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study included 158 nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units. Personal information form for nurses, Thanatophobia Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults were used. Data were collected through an online questionnaire in the study. Percentage calculations, mean measurements, Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test were used in the statistical evaluation of the data.

RESULTS

The mean of thanatophobia scale and psychological resilience scale was found 31.74 ± 10.08 and 108.34 ± 7.12, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the tanatophobia total scale score and age, receiving training on psychological resilience (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between perseption of self, family cohesion and perception of future and the status of receiving training on psychological resilience (p < 0.05). A statistically negative significant correlation was determined between the thanatophobia scale and the psychological resilience scale total scores.

CONCLUSIONS

As a result, it was determined that as the thanatophobia of the nurses increased, their psychological resilience decreased. This situation may negatively affect nurses working in critical departments to provide quality health care to patients. Establishing and maintaining training programs to reduce thanatophobia and increase psychological resilience of nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units will ensure that nurses provide quality health care to the patient and reduce the physiological and psychological wear of nurses.

Relationship between rumination and post-traumatic growth in mobile cabin hospital nurses: The mediating role of psychological resilience

Psychological resilience helps individuals to actively respond to various emergencies, but its mediating role between the rumination and post-traumatic growth (PTG) of nurses remains unknown. Our study aimed to explore the extent to which psychological resilience mediates the association between rumination and PTG among nurses working in mobile cabin hospitals. This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 449 medical team members working in mobile cabin hospitals to support the prevention and control of coronavirus disease 2019 in Shanghai, China in 2022. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to assess the correlation between rumination, psychological resilience, and PTG. Structural equation models were used to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience between rumination and PTG. Our study results showed that deliberate rumination directly promoted psychological resilience and PTG and had positive effects on PTG through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. Invasive rumination had no direct effect on PTG. However, it had a negative effect on PTG through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. Together the results of this study indicate that the mediating effect of psychological resilience was significant in the association of rumination and PTG among mobile cabin hospital nurses, with a higher individual psychological resilience level helping nurses to achieve PTG. Therefore, targeted interventions should be implemented to improve nurses' psychological resilience and guide their rapid growth.

Examining the Role of Resilience, Posttraumatic Growth, and Quality of Life in Women with Breast Cancer: A Serial Multiple Mediator Model Approach

OBJECTIVES

It is unclear how resilience and posttraumatic growth help women with breast cancer face cancer-related symptom distress. This study included both resilience and posttraumatic growth as mediators in a serial multiple mediator model to examine changes in the relationship between symptom distress and quality of life among women with breast cancer.

DATA SOURCES

We conducted the descriptive, cross-sectional study in Taiwan. Data were collected using a survey that assessed symptom distress, resilience, posttraumatic growth, and quality of life. A serial multiple mediator model examined one direct and three specific indirect effects of symptom distress on quality of life through resilience and posttraumatic growth. All 91 participants reported the presence of symptom distress and moderate levels of resilience. Quality of life was significantly associated with symptom distress (b = -1.04), resilience (b = 0.18), and posttraumatic growth (b = 0.09). The indirect effect of symptom distress on quality of life through resilience alone was statistically significant (b = -0.23, 95% CI -0.44 to -0.07) and statistically greater than the specific indirect effect through resilience and posttraumatic growth combined (b = -0.21, 95% CI -0.40 to -0.05).

CONCLUSION

Resilience plays a unique role in reducing the impact of symptom distress on the quality of life among women with breast cancer.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Given the importance of resilience to quality of life, oncology nurses can assess the resilience of women with breast cancer and help identify available internal, external, and existential resources to strengthen their resilience.

Association between proactive personality and professional identity of nursing undergraduates: The mediating role of resilience and irrational belief

AIM

To examine the relationship between proactive personality and professional identity of undergraduate nursing students, including the role of psychological resilience and irrational belief as mediators.

BACKGROUND

Personality has been shown to play a crucial role in determining professional identity. However, the influence of proactive personality on professional identity in the nursing field is poorly understood and requires further investigation.

DESIGN

We conducted a cross-sectional study in China. Between July and December of 2021, 860 nursing undergraduates participated in an online questionnaire survey.

METHODS

Four main variables (proactive personality, psychological resilience, irrational belief and professional identity) and two covariates (willingness to choose nursing profession and family attitude towards nursing) were assessed. The assessment tools chosen are both valid and reliable. To test the proposed multi-mediation model, linear regression analysis by Hayes's SPSS macro-PROCESS was used.

RESULTS

The results revealed that PP, PR and PI were positively connected with one another, but negatively with IB. PP positively predicted PI through direct and indirect paths, after controlling for two covariates. The percentage of indirect path (78.72%) outweighed the direct path (21.28%). The indirect effect of PR (72.51%) was higher than that of PR and IB (6.21%). PI was also positively predicted by students' "Yes" willingness and families' "supportive" attitude towards nursing.

CONCLUSION

This study stated that nursing educators should take nursing students' PP seriously, which would allow for activities to be taken to improve their PR and decrease their IB, hence continuously enhancing their PI. In addition, respecting students' professional aspirations and improving family support may also be valuable ways to boost their PI.

Determinants of individuals' objective and subjective financial fragility during the COVID-19 pandemic

We examine determinants of the objective and subjective financial fragility of 2100 individuals across Australia, France, Germany, and South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective financial fragility reflects individuals' (in)ability to deal with unexpected expenses, while subjective financial fragility reflects their emotional response to financial demands. Controlling for an extensive set of socio-demographics, we find that negative personal experiences during the pandemic (i.e., reduced or lost employment; COVID-19 infection) are associated with higher objective and subjective financial fragility. However, individuals' cognitive (i.e., financial literacy) as well as non-cognitive abilities (i.e., internal locus of control; psychological resilience) help to counteract this higher financial fragility. Finally, we examine the role of government financial support (i.e., income support; debt relief) and find that it is negatively related to financial fragility only for the economically weakest households. Our results have implications for public policymakers, providing levers for reducing individuals' objective and subjective financial fragility.

Social participation, psychological resilience and depression among widowed older adults in China

BACKGROUND

Depression has become a challenging public health problem, and the loss of a spouse is one of the main causes of depression in older adults. Social participation and psychological resilience are protective factors that reduce depressive symptoms in adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of social participation and psychological resilience on the depression of Chinese widowed older adults.

METHODS

We carried out a cross-sectional study on 790 community-dwelling widowed older adults in Shaanxi, China, in 2019. A structured face-to-face interview was used to collect data. We used the ordinary least squares model (OLS), the generalized propensity score matching (GPSM) and the mediation model to test the relationship between social participation, psychological resilience and depression.

RESULTS

We find a U-shaped relationship between social participation and depression, with the increase in social participation scores, the average depression level decreased and then increased. The psychological resilience of the widowed older adults was negatively associated with depression. The higher their psychological resilience, the lower their depression level. Among the four factors of psychological resilience, factor 2 (optimism and positive acceptance of change) and factor 3 (secure relationships and tolerance of negative affect) of psychological resilience were protective factors for depression after adjusting for demographic variables and physical health conditions. Psychological resilience plays a mediating role, as evident in factor 2 and factor 3 mediating the relationship between social participation and depression.

CONCLUSION

An appropriate level of social participation will relieve the depression of widowed older adults. Social participation can reduce the depression level of widowed older adults by improving their psychological resilience. Community and family could reduce depression by intervening in the social participation of widowed older adults. Active social participation is crucial because it has a protective and resilient impact, which can help people recover from the stress of losing a spouse.

The impact of psychological resilience on chronic patients' depression during the dynamic Zero-COVID policy: the mediating role of stigma and the moderating role of sleep quality

OBJECTIVE

Chronic patients are experiencing depression caused by themselves or the surrounding environment, how to cope with the change of mentality and adjust the psychological stress response, especially under the background of the current dynamic Zero-COVID policy in China, is a problem worth further discussion. The researchers constructed a mediating regulation model to test the influence of psychological resilience on depression of chronic patients during dynamic Zero-COVID, as well as the mediating role of stigma and the moderating role of sleep.

METHOD

From October 2021 to February 2022, this study used a multi-stage sampling method and random number table method to collect data in the Shang Cheng District of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Firstly, the Second Affiliated Hospital of the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, a third-class hospital was randomly selected from the Shang Cheng District. Secondly, three departments were strategically selected from this hospital: endocrinology, dermatology, and traditional Chinese medicine. Thirdly, survey points were set up in each department, and chronic patients were strategically selected for questionnaire surveys. Finally, a face-to-face survey was conducted on 398 chronic patients who met the criteria for inclusion. In addition, chronic medical illness burden was assessed using the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale-Geriatrics (CIRS-G), psychological resilience was measured by the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), stigma was measured by the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness (SSCI), sleep was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) and depression was estimated by the Patient Health Questionaire-9(PHQ-9). SPSS (version 25.0) and PROCESS (version 4.0) were used for correlation analysis, mediation analysis, and mediated moderation analysis.

RESULTS

Psychological resilience was negatively correlated with depression, stigma, and sleep. Depression was positively correlated with stigma and sleep. Stigma and sleep were positively correlated; Stigma played a mediating role in the relationship between psychological resilience and depression; Sleep moderated the first half of the pathway "psychological resilience [Formula: see text] stigma [Formula: see text] depression".

CONCLUSION

Psychological resilience affected depression directly and indirectly through stigma. At the same time, sleep played a moderating role between psychological resilience and depression. The correlation between psychological resilience and stigma was stronger when levels of sleep levels were higher.

The effect of perceived stress for work engagement in volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic: the mediating role of psychological resilience and age differences

Volunteers played an important role throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the characteristics of perceived stress, psychological resilience and work engagement among 910 Chinese volunteers of different ages in the first month of pandemic in Gansu province, China. The present study tested the correlations between perceived stress and work engagement, the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship and the differences among age groups. The results of this study showed that work engagement and psychological resilience increased with the age of the volunteers. Work engagement and resilience levels were higher in middle adulthood than in early adulthood. As predicted, perceived stress negatively predicted work engagement. A mediation analysis showed that psychological resilience partially explained the correlations between perceived stress and work engagement. Specifically, the mediating effect of psychological resilience in early adulthood was significant, but not in middle adulthood. Overall, this study demonstrates that work engagement increased with age and was negatively predicted by perceived stress, showing these factors were important for volunteers' work during COVID-19. Further, for those in early adulthood, psychological resilience mediated this relationship-highlighting another age difference among volunteers during COVID-19.

The role of self-efficacy and psychological resilience on the relationship between perfectionism and learning motivation among undergraduate nursing students: A cross-sectional descriptive study

BACKGROUND

People's high requirements for medical care and the difficult academic tasks associated with the nursing profession require nursing students to have stronger learning motivation.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate the effect of perfectionism on the learning motivation of undergraduate nursing students and to explore the mediating factors influencing these two variables.

METHOD

A total of 1366 nursing students from four undergraduate universities in Henan Province, China, were surveyed from May to July 2022. We conducted Pearson's correlation analysis and a regression analysis using PROCESS Macro Model 6 to explore the relationships among perfectionism, efficacy, psychological resilience, and learning motivation.

RESULTS

The results indicated that perfectionism affected undergraduate nursing students' learning motivation not only directly but also indirectly through self-efficacy and psychological resilience.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study offer certain theoretical support and guidance for research and interventions pertaining to undergraduate nursing students' learning motivation.

Emotional empowerment through information research and communication to reduce fear of COVID-19 among nursing students: a randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Despite an existing body of literature on anxiety reduction using multi-component methods, little is known about the effect of active student participation in research and communication of scientific information on anxiety and fear reduction. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of quality scientific information research and the production of informative videos on the preventive aspects of COVID-19 on fear and anxiety reduction.

METHODS

A randomised controlled trial was conducted with 220 undergraduate nursing students in the first year of the nursing degree. The participating students were randomised into two groups. The experimental group carried out an intervention based on a database search for information on preventing COVID-19 and production of a video giving scientific reasons why prevention measures should be followed. In the control group, students created posters and videos about theoretical aspects of one module of the nursing degree. Both groups were surveyed before and after the intervention, measuring their state of resilience, preventive behaviours, level of anxiety, and fear of COVID-19.

RESULTS

The intervention group showed a greater decrease in fear levels after the intervention than those in the control group. There were no differences between the groups in terms of resilience, preventive behaviours, or anxiety. In the experimental group, there was a significant decrease in anxiety levels and fear levels after the intervention compared to the baseline levels.

CONCLUSIONS

An intervention based on active participation in searches for high-quality scientific information and production of information videos on COVID-19 prevention reduced fear and anxiety caused by COVID-19 among nursing students.

Psychological review of hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

Kidney transplantation (KT) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring hemodialysis (HD) increase the incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative effect on the psychological well-being of COVID-19 patients, especially those with a high-risk of infectious complications. The prevalence of anxiety and depression is known to be higher in ESRD patients undergoing HD than in the general population. On the other hand, KT recipients have different treatment requirements compared to HD patients, including adherence to complex immunosuppressive regimens and compliance with follow-up appointments. We hypothesized that psychosocial difficulties and stressors would differ between ESRD patients undergoing HD and KT recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic. If so, each group may require different interventions to maintain their psychosocial well-being.

AIM

To measure and compare the levels of stress, anxiety, depression, concerns related to the pandemic, and coping skills in ESRD patients undergoing HD and KT recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was performed at a training and research hospital. The study included ESRD patients undergoing HD (HD group) and KT recipients (with stable graft function for ≥ 6 mo prior to the study) (KT group). Patients completed a demographics form, the impact of events scale, the hospital anxiety and depression scale, and the Connor-Davidson resilience scale. Laboratory findings at the last clinical follow-up were recorded. The χ² test was used to assess the relationship between the HD and KT groups and the categorical variables. The relationships between the scale scores were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test, and differences between the groups were analyzed using the independent groups t-test.

RESULTS

The study included 125 patients, of which 89 (71.2%) were in the HD group and 36 (28.8%) were in the KT group. The levels of anxiety and depression were higher in the HD group than in the KT group [9.36 ± 4.38 vs 6.89 ± 4.06 (P = 0.004) and 8.78 ± 4.05 vs 6.42 ± 4.26 (P = 0.004), respectively], whereas the post-traumatic stress score was higher in the KT group [46.75 ± 13.98 vs 37.66 ± 18.50 (P = 0.009)]. The concern with the highest intensity in the HD group was transmission of COVID-19 to family and friends (93.3%) and in the KT group was loss of caregiver and social support (77.8%). Concerns regarding financial hardship, stigmatization, loneliness, limited access to health care services, failure to find medical supplies, and transmission of COVID-19 to family and friends were more prevalent in the HD group. Connor-Davidson resilience scale tenacity and personal competence, tolerance, and negative affect scores were higher in the KT group than in the HD group [43.47 ± 11.39 vs 33.72 ± 12.58, 15.58 ± 4.95 vs 11.45 ± 5.05, and 68.75 ± 17.39 vs 55.39 ± 18.65 (P < 0.001), respectively]. Biochemical parameters, such as creatine, urea, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, and calcium, were lower, and the albumin and hemoglobin values were higher in the KT group than in the HD group (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Psychosocial difficulties and the level of stress differ in ESRD patients undergoing HD and KT recipients; therefore, psychosocial interventions should be tailored for each patient group.

College students' learning stress, psychological resilience and learning burnout: status quo and coping strategies

BACKGROUND

The relationships of college students' learning stress, psychological resilience and learning burnout remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the status quo and relationship of college students' learning stress, psychological resilience and learning burnout, to provide insights to the management and nursing care of college students.

METHODS

From September 1 to October 31, 2022, students in our college were selected by stratified cluster sampling and underwent survey with the learning stress scale, college students' learning burnout scale and the psychological resilience scale of college students.

RESULTS

A total of 1680 college students were surveyed in this study. The score of learning burnout was positively correlated with the score of learning stress (r = 0.69), and negatively correlated with the score of psychological resilience (r = 0.59), and the score of learning stress was negatively correlated with the score of psychological resilience (r = 0.61). Learning pressure was correlated with the age(r=-0.60) and monthly family income(r=-0.56), the burnout was correlated with the monthly family income(r=-0.61), and psychological resilience was correlated with the age(r = 0.66) (all P < 0.05). Psychological resilience played an intermediary role in the prediction of learning burnout by learning stress, with an total intermediary role of-0.48, accounting for 75.94% of the total effect.

CONCLUSIONS

Psychological resilience is the mediating variable of the influence of learning stress on learning burnout. College managers should take various effective measures to improve college students' psychological resilience to reduce college students' learning burnout.
